duclaw brewery tour

Mimicking the brewery’s move into a bigger space, the company itself has been growing. DuClaw’s current capacity is 30,000 barrels compared to where it started at just 1,000. And now the beer is available in five states: Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. Benfield says DuClaw will be in North Carolina in about a month.

DuClaw Brewing Co. Logo

Baltimore-based and fearlessly innovating in craft beer since 1996. From the time he set foot on a college campus, Dave Benfield was expected to go into the family business as an electrical contractor. But rather than learning the business in his free time, Dave was spending his waking hours homebrewing, drinking his homebrew, and sharing the amazing liquid with others. One day, his father said to him, you’re going to be a brewer, aren’t you?

DuClaw was born when our founder, Dave Benfield, followed his passion and started brewpubs in Maryland. Later, he transitioned to focus on his bottling and canning business so he could get more DuClaw to more people. Always cherishing the craft, never following the obvious path. Craft Be Cherished. Rules Be Damned.

Find DuClaw distributed in: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Coming soon: Massachusetts.

DuClaw Brewing Company BWI

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Sat at a high top and had to walk to bar to order. Noone came to table. Ordered a wedge salad and it was more like blue cheese soup with some lettuce mixed in. I have never seen that much dressing on a salad in... my life. And I even love blue cheese. This place is average at best and only survives likely because it's the only restaurant before security. More

Waiting on a flight and we came in hungry. We transferred airports from an international flight and we were able to sit and eat with our bags at our feet. Menu included sandwiches, burgers, salads, etc. also included a mix of local beers. The food... was good and the service was good. Out server was very nice and friendly. We sat for a while and she was very nice. The burger, black bean nachos and queso were all good choices. More

Ariel was an attentive waitress and very nice. My turkey melt and fries were good dessert was average but especially for a quick airport restaurant I was very happy!

DuClaw has a bar / restaurant location at BWI very conveniently located in the ticketing area next to the TSA Pre-check line in about the middle of the terminal -- I believe it is near the security line for the C-gates. So you don't have... to go through security to access it, which is a huge plus for many. DuClaw has a decent selection of brews, none of them outstanding to my taste, but acceptable and reasonably priced given their airport location. The menu selection is also quite good. I had the fish and chips, which was excellent -- the fish was moist and flaky, and battered in one of their beer-based batters. The down side was that you only got one rather modestly sized piece of fish, while at any other restaurant you would get at least two. I commented on this to the server, and she said there was no mistake, it's just how DuClaw did it. That was a disappointment and the reason for the average rating here. Service was fast and friendly. More

Good service at the bar. Two tacos and a beer for $19 was ok. Tacos were seafood, but relatively bland.

Quick service, good food, reasonable prices, broad menu. DuClaw has it all. As a reasonably frequent customer, the excellent serving staff even remember my favourites from previous visits. The Chili is excellent.

Food took a little while, but when you choose to go, it does not take priority over the Dine in. So if you don't mind the wait, the food is pretty good.

We sat in the tables/booths area of the restaurant. Our waitress was fairly quick to take our orders. Beverages were soon brought out. Food took a little while to cook and receive (the waitress never asked whether we were in a hurry to catch our... plane or made any conversation at all). By the way we were not in a hurry and learned there was a slight delay anyhow. The failure came after we had completed most of our meal and drink glasses were empty. Waitress passed by our table twice, not asking whether we wanted another beverage. I asked to see the manager and none was on duty. Very unsatisfactory service worthy of a small tip. More

Monday morning at 11:30am. Not a big crowd at the airport. No waiting. Our server arrived approximately 10 minutes after we got seated. Was just here to drop off a family member, so no beer tasting for me. She had plenty of time before her... flight, time was not a factor. Be aware and read the menu, because French fries, or onion rings or salad does no come with your order. Although, the server will ask you if you want salad, French fries or onion rings. The food was not bad, but it was not great either. I've always wanted to stop here, now I know. More

the Duclaw bar ar Bwi before TSA at concourse A and B of southwest airlines ticket counter. Duclaw has a friendly customer service, the place is so nice the food is awesome they got variety that you gonna love.. very, very good place to have... your lunch or dinner.. More

Do you find the airport drop-off experience less pleasant than it used to be? My hunch is that the answer is yes. Time was, in the days before 9/11, that if one was dropping off one's spouse or significant other at a major U.S. airport,... the couple could walk together into the terminal, even all the way to the gate -- shopping at the stores, dining at the restaurants, whatever they liked. Those days, of course, are long gone; and at many airports, there are no amenities whatsoever on the "public" side of the security area. Fortunately, Baltimore-Washington International Airport has, just inside one of the airport's main entrances, a branch of the locally popular DuClaw brewpub restaurant. The restaurant sits close to the Southwest Airlines counter, right below a wall that used to be decorated with scenes of Maryland life (an Orioles game, Antietam Battlefield, the tombstone of Edgar Allan Poe) before BWI underwent an ill-advised renovation. The ambience at this branch of DuClaw, perhaps because of its open-air location in a high-ceilinged airport terminal, is more light and airy than in the larger DuClaw location at the nearby Arundel Mills Mall in Hanover. The food is fine brewpub fare, often with a good Chesapeake-area regional flair; the crab cake sandwich is first-rate, and I recommend that you order the homemade chips with it. DuClaw also offers a bewildering variety of beers, ales, and porters, as a brewpub should. Therefore, if you're dropping someone off at BWI, go ahead and park in short-term parking (level 6 provides you with the quickest trip across the skyway and into the airport terminal), and enjoy a good meal at DuClaw. More

Big thanks to employee Khalia Williams who rushed out to find us in the middle of a busy airport to return our forgotten credit card!

Good area, and close to one of the security checkpoints which is nice, also it's on the outside so a plus for seeing people off and enjoying a meal with them. I had the stupid hot chicken tenders... I have had hotter literally everywhere else... I have had wings. My co-workers had burgers and they said they were okay, about a 6/10 for the brew house burger. More

Nice atmosphere. Excellent service and the staff is very friendly. The prices are reasonable for being at the airport. The burgers were delicious!!

For a restaurant in an airport, this was really good. Service was great! The fish n chips were fantastic and I didn’t even have to ask the server for the malt vinegar. Nice break on a long layover.

DuClaw Brewing Company acquired by New Jersey-based River Horse Brewing Company

Credit: DuClaw Brewing Company

DuClaw Brewing Company has been acquired by a New Jersey brewer, and will transition production out of Baltimore County, according to a Thursday announcement.

DuClaw was acquired by River Horse Brewing Company, based in Ewing, New Jersey, and said will move its production responsibilities to the company’s facility there.

Though the two brewers will continue to be managed separately, and DuClaw founder Dave Benfield will still be the “driving force” of many decisions regarding product and strategy, the companies plan to combine their facilities and production and also share to some distribution partnerships, according to the announcement.

River Horse will expand capacity at its facility so that it can meet the demands of DuClaw’s “national distribution footprint,” according to the announcement.

The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.

“The operations side of brewing is challenging, and at the end of the day I was spending too much of my time and energy chasing the latest mechanical, supply or logistical issue, and was taken away from driving the brand the way I wanted,” Benfield said in the announcement. “This partnership will allow me to focus on what I am best at.”

Benfield started DuClaw as a brewpub in Bel Air in 1996. In 2014, the company moved to a larger facility in Rosedale . The company’s beers, such as Sweet Baby Jesus! and Sour Me Unicorn Farts, are sold in 21 states and internationally in Canada and France, according to the company’s website .

The company assured beer-drinkers they will still be able to get DuClaw beer at local stores and shouldn’t “see too many changes.” It also teased some “new innovative product releases.”

The news comes on the heels of two other major breweries moving their production out of state. In April, Diageo North America announced it would lay off around 100 workers and cease manufacturing at Guinness Open Gate Brewery, which makes Baltimore Blonde. With the future of the ale in question, Baltimore County has pledged $500,000 to any brewery that could keep its production local.

And last month, Frederick’s Flying Dog Brewery revealed it was sold to FX Matt Brewing Company and would shift its operations to New York.

At a time of upheaval in the local brewing scene, Brewers Association of Maryland Communications Director Jim Bauckman said Maryland is not unique. Across the country, the craft beer industry has grown exponentially and is now a very competitive space, Bauckman said.

Breweries like DuClaw or Flying Dog that rely on wholesale distribution, he said, are seeing a slight decline in sales compared to some other models, largely because with more players in the industry there’s a fight to get products on retail shelves with limited space.

As a whole, the industry “has really transitioned from something that has historically just been a really cool hobby to a profession, or a really cool innovative and creative space to a very competitive space that requires a lot of good business decisions be made,” Bauckman said.

Craft beer, he added, is no longer in a period of “unbridled growth.” He also said such acquisitions have been happening with larger breweries across the country.

Both Flying Dog and DuClaw have been around for decades.

“The reality is, you’re looking at two brands that are pushing 30 years old, and at some point, what does the business do?” he said.

Today, Jailbreak is best known for its stone fruit-infused IPAs and hazy fruit wheat beers. In addition to its many flagship beers, Jailbreak also produces a rotating selection of seasonal and limited-release brews.

Waredaca Brewing Company is a local brewery in Gaithersburg, Maryland, specializing in farmhouse-style ales. The name Waredaca comes from an old Native American term meaning “place of peace.” And that’s exactly what the brewery is all about – a place to relax, enjoy some great beer, and connect with friends. The taproom is rustic and cozy, with a 32-foot-long reclaimed barn wood bar. The brewing equipment is all on display, so you can see exactly how your beer is being made. And the outdoor seating area is perfect for lazy summer days.

Waredaca Brewing Company is known for its flagship beer, the Waredaca Pale Ale, as well as its rotating selection of seasonal and limited-edition brews. In addition to beer, the brewery also offers wine and cider made from grapes and apples grown on the farm. Visitors to the brewery can enjoy tastings and tours and take advantage of the scenic views of the farm.

Move Over Sweet Baby Jesus… There’s Sweet Baby PB and J Coming Through

DuClaw Brewing – already well known for their Sweet Baby Jesus is now adding Sweet Baby PB and J to their lineup. One of the stand outs in the Eastern Coast region for Peanut Butter beers – Sweet Baby Jesus has been a beer go – to for many craft beer enthusiasts for years.

Now, DuClaw Brewing is adding an exciting comparable variant to that Sweet Baby Jesus: Sweet Baby PB and J.

Sweet Baby PB and J is a chocolate peanut butter raspberry porter. It will be hitting in at 6.2% ABV and will be sold in 12 oz cans and likely 12 oz bottles. They took their base of Sweet Baby Jesus and added the raspberry to make the Sweet Baby PB and J. Sweet Baby Jesus comes in at 6.2% ABV as well, and is also available in 12 oz cans and bottles throughout the DuClaw / River Horse distribution footprint.

River Horse Acquiring DuClaw Brewing

Just recently – June 1st 2023 – River Horse Brewing Acquired DuClaw Brewing . Hot on the heels of F.X. Matt / Saranac Brewing Acquiring Flying Dog Brewery – River Horse Brewing out of Ewing New Jersey announced they acquired the Baltimore brewery DuClaw Brewing. The acquisition by River Horse Brewing allows them to distribute more, and have multiple facilities to brew out of. DuClaw Brewing still brews out of Baltimore MD, and are distributed with the Ewing, NJ’s breweries distribution ability.

From our article:

What All Does This Entail For the moment, it looks like not a whole lot for the consumer. It would appear that both River Horse Brewing Company and DuClaw Brewing Company beers will be appearing on shelves (with possibly greater distribution); on the production side of things, it looks like the two breweries will be using each other’s production facilities and brewhouses. This should likely increase both brands distribution footprint. But no word on that, or guarantee of that yet. No word on the specifics of the deal yet either. Baltimore's DuClaw brewing acquired by New Jersey company, will move production

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: June 2, 2023 / 3:20 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- Baltimore-based DuClaw Brewing has been acquired by New Jersey brewery River Horse, the company said Thursday.

River Horse, based in Ewing, will expand its brewery's capacity to accommodate DuClaw's national distribution, the company said in a Facebook announcement .

The company said founder Dave Benfield "is thrilled to transition the production responsibilities to the team in Ewing, NJ so he can give 100% of his attention to the part of the business that he truly loves, products, strategy and sales," the company said.

Each brand would be managed separately, the company said, but they would share production capacity and certain distribution partnerships.

"The operations side of brewing is challenging, and at the end of the day I was spending too much of my time and energy chasing the latest mechanical, supply or logistical issue, and was taken away from driving the brand the way I wanted," Benfield said in a statement.

It wasn't immediately clear what the jobs impact would be from moving the beer's production out of the state. River Horse said it is currently seeking new team members for brewing, packaging or cellaring.

The company seems to expect a seamless transition, telling customers: "Don't expect to see too many changes though, you should be able to get your favorite River Horse and DuClaw beers at your local store and taverns without interruption."

The mid-sized brewery was founded 25 years ago, and has since expanded to taps in 21 states and across the globe, the company says.

It's just the latest news to rock Maryland's beer scene, with Flying Dog's acquisition last month by a New York Brewery, and the beloved Guinness Open Gate Brewery announcing the closure of its manufacturing facility in Baltimore County.
