I really like the sand less products. After a beach vacation my car looks like it needs a major detailing job. Sand less products would really help…how about sand less flip flops!

I always travel with a canister of powder from the local dollar store when taking a beach/sand outing. Sprinkled liberally on damp sandy feet and quickly brushed off with a small towel brings remarkable results. Sprinkle on flip/flops and tap them together, similar results.

Finally a list of things that I actually want!

Scrubba Wash Bag is the most useful thing when travelling. You can use it as “washing machine” and also as a waterproof bag todo keep safe all your gadgets. It’s really worth it.

I love mine and everyone I show it too is amazed by it and the results you get from it.

Thanks Meeroona. This is really helpful. I am traveling to Vietnam. Its going to be a budget trip and am sure a few things mentioned herein above will be really handy.

These items are kinda good for camping in your backyard but not much real use. Have you ever heard of North Face, Rei, etc?

Are you writing to help people or to move some new untested products?

Hi Nichols,

Thanks for stopping by! To answer your question, I always write about things that I like and I would use. Plus, this is not an article about camping gear, nor it is about how to survive in the wild.

Great Products Meeroona. It takes lot of hard work for INNOVATIONS.

Its awesome that you have included products like the Scrubba & the solar powered light. We definitely need travelers turning towards sustainable solutions at a quicker rate! For me personally the sand-less beach mat was a game changer (thank you for that), especially since I am lanky and beach towels always get so much sand on them so quickly.

The scrubba washing bag is GREAT! I have 2

Great recommendations, thank you.

I’m planning to travel in Hawaii next week and this article amazed me, cool gadgets and good recommendations!

Really cool gadgets. I hope I could afford every single one on the list.

Whether you're on a long-haul flight, a never-ending road trip, or just jetting around your destination, there are plenty of travel-appropriate tech gadgets that can make your next trip a breeze.

From gear to ensure you're charged up to a TSA-approved massage gun to ail the aches of travel, here are our favorite travel tech gadgets and accessories to ensure you're ready for anything that comes your way.

innovative travel products

For keeping an eye on your valuables, put a Tile Pro or Apple AirTag in your checked baggage. We recommend Tile because it works for both Android and Apple devices, while utilizing the Tile user network to help you locate things that are much further away.

On the flipside: Apple's AirTag offers the same features, but only works with Apple devices. The AirTag connects to the Find My app built into every iPhone and iPad, which theoretically means it taps into a wider network of users to locate your item. Whichever you choose, consider a tracker in your luggage as personal insurance.

Insta360 X3 Camera

innovative travel products

Sure, the best camera is the phone that's in your pocket, but if there's a reason to bring along an additional shooter, make it the the X3. This 360-degree camera works alongside a companion app on your phone and captures everything surrounding you. No longer will you need to choose what to frame. But what makes this camera truly fun are the special effects you can create, which will make your vacation photos and videos stand out from the crowd.

Sony WH-100XM5 Headphones

innovative travel products

If you want the latest and greatest in over-ear noise-canceling performance, it's the Sony WH-100XM5s . The XM5s sport an updated design with a narrower headband and wider earcups for a roomier fit. The drivers have been updated and the ANC (active noise cancellation) performance has been kicked up a notch thanks to two processors and eight noise-canceling microphones, up from the four microphones found on the previous-gen XM4s. Speaking of the XM4s, they're still a great option and cost $50 less .

innovative travel products

The Beats Fit Pro was released back in 2021, but they continue to be one of our favorite wireless earbuds. This year, Beats introduced three new eye-catching colors: coral pink , volt yellow , and tidal blue .

Panasonic ErgoFit Wired Earbuds

innovative travel products

It's a good idea to have a pair of wired earbuds to toss in your bag for a flight, especially since most in-seat entertainment systems have yet to roll out support for Bluetooth. And while there are plenty to choose from, Panasonic's ErgoFit is a tried-and-true budget pair you won't regret. Available in more than 15 colors, these earbuds are as basic as you can get, but they'll get the job done for under $20. Just note that you'll need a Lightning adapter for Apple devices .

innovative travel products

The 622 is capable of wirelessly charging your phone at a max of 7.5 watts, but its best feature is the travel-friendly built-in kickstand. If you're looking for more power, Anker also sells a 10,000mAh version .

It features a soft-shell body for added structure and protection, along with loops, pockets, and compartments to neatly store your essentials. It's also available in a compact size .

The battery's 10,000mAh capacity is enough to charge your phone or tablet for a weekend of use. Bonus: Nimble is a certified B Corp with a commitment to sustainable consumerism currently unmatched in the consumer tech industry, from using non-traditional materials and plastic-free packaging, to its free e-waste recycling program.

DJI Osmo Mobile 6

innovative travel products

Unfortunately, nobody wants to watch your vacation videos if they're nauseatingly bouncy, no matter how beautiful the scenery is. To capture rock-steady footage with smooth pans and tilts — think Hollywood-style cinematography — put your phone into what is the best gimbal for consumers. It's easy to operate, and the built-in telescoping pole lets you capture selfies with a wider view.

Moft Invisible Laptop Stand

innovative travel products

When you're on the road, ergonomics is a challenge. The retractable prongs allow it to work in more than 150 countries, and it has six charging ports: four USB ports, one USB-C port, and one universal AC socket.

innovative travel products

If you can only pack one camera for travel, make it the new GoPro Hero 12 Black. This latest version of GoPro's storied Hero camera can shoot high-dynamic-range video for improved contrast and coloring, a wider field-of-view lens to capture more of a scene, and Bluetooth support for headphones. Grab a cool instant camera , a portable WiFi hotspot , a universal power bank , or even a pair of binoculars, for example, then you'll really be bon-voyage-ing.

Twelve South AirFly Pro

AirFly Pro

Simply put, it's a TikTok viral gadget that'll connect your AirPods —or any wireless headphones and earbuds—to the airplane TV. A godsend for your inevitably long, dull flight across the country, or the globe.

Therabody SmartGoggles

SmartGoggles

The last row of economy feels like first class when you put these on. They calm you down or put you to sleep with massages around your eyes and temples.

JEPWCO G4 Pro Anti Spy Detector

G4 Pro Anti Spy Detector

You never know what kind of creeps are lurking at your hotel room or AirBnb. Hence, a wireless hidden device detector that'll blow the gaff on those pinhole cameras, audio bugs, and trackers. And, it doesn't look like a detective's walkie-talkie, which is cool.

Omnicharge Omni 20+ 20000mah Power Bank

Omni 20+ 20000mah Power Bank

A portable charger on the road or in the air will prove a life-saver during those unexpected power-off moments. The Omni 20+ is one almighty power bank capable of charging your cameras, drones, laptops, and phones simultaneously, at up to 100W—one of the fastest speeds we've ever seen. It's got ports of all kinds for that matter, ready to lend a hand to all the heavy travel tech you'll bring along.

DJI OM 5 Smartphone Gimbal Stabilizer

OM 5 Smartphone Gimbal Stabilizer

Not just any selfie-stick. Use DJI's smart gimbal that is anti-wobbling to up your photography or vlogging skills to match even the pros. The ActiveTrack algorithm will automatically follow main objects in the frame for an HD focus. They can be walking, running, swimming, zig-zagging... This gimbal don't miss.

Leica SOFORT 2 Instant Camera (Black)

Leica SOFORT 2 Instant Camera (Black)

Most polaroids are too big and bulky to really enjoy. For any vacation, you should either get a disposable camera or this brand new Leica point and shoot. It takes digital photos you can develop later, but it can also print those photos immediately onto little polaroids.

Bellroy Tech Kit

Tech Kit

We won't tell you what iPhone chargers or power adapters to get—you probably already have the best. But we do recommend a carry-on organizer for all your essential tech accessories, and Bellroy's tech kit has a place for every possible one you might need while traveling.

furid Airtag Wallet

Airtag Wallet

There's no reason to add any extra stress to your trip. Get an AirTag wallet and save yourself from a succession of mini heart attacks.

Bose Alto Audio Sunglasses

Alto Audio Sunglasses

Flexing designer shades on the go is pretty much any traveler's second nature. Bose's classic-cool smart sunglasses , with open-ear audio built in to play music only for you, will save you a pair of headphones at that, while letting you stay alert (of those pickpockets, specifically).

JBL Clip 4 Portable Speaker

Clip 4 Portable Speaker

Speaker convenient enough that you can clip onto your backpack or pant's belt loop is one that'll soundtrack your excursion. Not to mention JBL's Clip 4 is one with a durability rating of IP67 and surprisingly punchy audio.

The Nori Press

The Nori Press

An iron and an ironing board are rarely guaranteed, so plenty of fashion types carry a steamer with them. The Nori Press is the best clothes steamer out there because it combines the features of steamer and iron. It's lightweight and packable, but it can set a nice sharp crease.

TUMI Just In Case Tote

Just In Case Tote

Alright, this is pushing the definition of gadget, but hear me out. This nylon tote packs down to the size of a book. Slip it into any suitcase or backpack, and forget it's there. Then—if you have extra stuff to bring home or just pack more lazily—pull it out, expand it and toss all your leftover stuff in it. It's my favorite travel hack product.

EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter

Universal Travel Adapter

Maybe if all these heads of state and government just agree upon one shape of input/output plug, we'd have less international conflicts? Before then, grab one—or more—of these all-in-one travel adapters to, IDK, bridge the international relations?

Cadence Starter Set

Starter Set

I talked about these little to-go skincare containers in our editors' travel hacks story . Instead of using drug store travel-sized products, you can take your expensive hair and skin care regimes on the road with you.

Apple AirTag, 4-Pack

AirTag, 4-Pack

Of course, you have to get some AirTags. Four is the perfect number, because you can insure you never lose your wallet, passport, carry-on, and checked bag.

Solis Lite Hotspot & Power Bank

Lite Hotspot & Power Bank

The last thing you need while traveling is to go offline—especially if you don't speak the local language. Thus, a WiFi hotspot , like the Solis, which is one of the easiest to operate. Just connect it to the mobile app and pay for the data, then off you go—web surfing, messaging, or any easy Internet usage. Cell carriers be damned.

Ember Temperature Control Travel Mug 2

VSSL Adventure Flask Kit

Adventure Flask Kit

More than just a drinking vessel kit for passing around whiskey to your traveling mates during a makeshift happy hour, though that's definitely its main purpose. VSSL adds an LED light, compass, and a bottle opener to the setup, so folks who are really outside adventuring can stay safe and sound, and, of course, enjoy some sips.

Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e

Px7 S2e

Everybody needs some Don't Talk to Me headphones. These from Bowers & Wilkins so comfortable and sound so great that I awarded them in our Esquire Gadget Awards .

Garmin Instinct 2 Solar GPS Watch

Instinct 2 Solar GPS Watch

Garmin's GPS watch beats Apple's latest release —the Ultra—to the punch at something any outdoorsman can appreciate: It's solar-powered. I.e. Instinct 2 has unlimited battery life as long as you keep the lights on. And it's built like a beast with a tough-as-nails anti-water/shock/heat case. It'll keep up with wherever you're traveling to, whatever extreme activity you might partake.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we review and test all types of travel gear in our Labs, from luggage trackers and noise-canceling headphones to carry-on suitcases and packing cubes . Our recommendations here include products we've tested first-hand in our own travels and swear by, as well as popular picks we found by researching seasoned travelers' rave reviews online.

Read on to learn more about the most useful travel gadgets to bring along on your next adventure, and find more information about how we make our recommendations at the bottom of this guide. Looking for more travel tips? Check out our best travel tips for families and our guide to the best luggage brands for every type of traveler .

If you need solid coverage and strong Wi-Fi on your next trip, consider this Verizon Jetpack that enables you to connect up to 15 devices to your very own personal WiFi network in over 200 countries . Our tech experts like that it works on a reliable Verizon network and has impressive battery life (in our Lab tests, the battery lasted a full day, holding up to the brand's claims). Plus, it can even charge your phone if you can't get find an empty outlet at the airport. Just keep in mind that you'll have to purchase a separate data plan from Verizon to use.

Having your phone die on you while you're exploring a new place is never ideal, especially if you want to snap a photo or access Google Maps. This portable charger will be there to give you enough juice to stay connected. We love its slim, compact design, which should easily fit into any size travel backpack . We also like that it can charge two devices at once via its USB-A ports . When you've used up all the battery life, we found it easy to recharge the power bank via micro-USB or USB-C.

RELATED: The Best Travel Items to Buy on Amazon

Pack this lightweight, compact gadget if you want smooth, stabilized footage of your vacation. The gimbal stabilizer is designed to hold your phone securely in place and has built-in controls that allow you to rotate it in one sweeping motion — a.k.a. the image will be way steadier than your shaky hand. Our tech pros love that this device not only helps create professional-looking footage, but it comes with a tripod and a magnetic clamp to make attaching your phone super easy.

Doesn't it always seem like hotel rooms never have enough outlets? This charger has a whopping four USB plugs, making it a great choice for a family or anyone who wants to charge their phone, tablet, headphones and smartwatch all at once . We also like the Anker 735 charger if you want to leave your bulky MacBook charger at home and use the compact design to power your computer, phone and more.

If you or your little ones are used to sleeping with a sound machine on at home, you'll want to bring along this top-rated portable white noise machine. This model has three different sound options to help drown out any noises that could disturb your sleep, like noisy neighbors or honking city horns. Best of all, it's super small (just 3.8 ounces) and doesn't require an outlet, since it can be recharged via USB.

If you're worried about losing your luggage, we suggest investing in a luggage tracker . Just tuck one of Apple's compact AirTags inside your suitcase, wallet or even passport holder so you can keep tabs on everything right from your phone . Though you need to use Apple's ecosystem, we love that AirTags offer easy real-time tracking and a one-year battery lifespan.

If you're notorious for overpacking or shopping on vacation, bring this lightweight and compact gadget on your next trip to avoid extra luggage fees for overweight suitcases . Just hook it on your suitcase to get an instant read. Lexie Sachs , the executive director of the Textiles Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute, says she's gotten tons of use out of this luggage scale over the years and it's helped her figure out how to divvy up her belongings between bags to avoid going over the weight limit on the way home.

There's nothing worse than arriving at your Airbnb only to realize you forgot your Bluetooth speaker . Our tech experts recommend bringing along this portable option from Ultimate Ears. Not only does its compact size make it easy to stuff in your bag, but we found that it packs a surprisingly loud punch . It's waterproof (it can even float in the pool!), has a long 14-hour battery life and can be paired up with another Wonderboom 3 speaker for stereo sound.

Why travel with tons of different cables when all you need is this handy multi-charger keychain that you can attach to a purse or keys? We love that it's designed to not get tangled up in your bag and that it features multiple outputs and inputs (like USB-C, USB-A, micro-USB and a lightning port for your iPhone) so you can power up all your devices. Just keep in mind that the cable is on the shorter side, so your device will need to be close at hand.

If you're tired of dealing with wrinkled clothing after a long day of travel, we've found that this steam iron is great for tackling small jobs on the go . In testing, our Cleaning Lab pros were impressed with the iron's ability to press out heavy creases as well as how lightweight it is ( only 2.2 lbs.). We found that it's easy to maneuver and comes with a useful silicone rest.

JOOMFEEN Travel Adapter

Travel Adapter

If you plan on traveling abroad, you'll want to pack a universal charger so you don't end up having to go out and buy a new one for your phone, tablet or computer. Our pros like this compact pick that can be plugged into most countries' respective outlets . Once you've plugged the adapter into the wall, all you need to do is plug your U.S. charger in and say goodbye to dead batteries. It also features two USB ports for simultaneous charging of multiple devices.

Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet

Fire HD 10 Tablet

With a Fire tablet, you can download Kindle books or stream your favorite shows to stay entertained in the car or at the airport . It's lightweight and gives you the many benefits of a traditional tablet , minus the hefty price tag. Plus, it claims to have a battery life that lasts up to 12 hours. We also like the Fire HD 10 Kids model if you're looking for a tablet for your children.

Bose QuietComfort 45 Headphones

QuietComfort 45 Headphones

Our testers found these noise-canceling headphones super comfortable, making long flights a lot more bearable. They f eature excellent sound quality, and we like that you can easily switch between Quiet and Aware modes , so you can hear important flight announcements without taking them off. Just don't forget to bring along the included cable so you can use the plane's audio jack if needed.

Sony WF-1000XM4 Noise-Canceling Wireless Earbuds

WF-1000XM4 Noise-Canceling Wireless Earbuds

If you're someone who struggles to find earbuds that remain comfortable after a few hours, our tech experts recommend these wireless earbuds from Sony. They're an excellent AirPods alternative featuring impressive battery life and soft silicone ear-tips . And on top of the fantastic sound quality, they also come with noise-canceling features so they're a good choice for planes.

Amazon Paperwhite

Paperwhite

On trips, you probably don't have the space in your bag to carry around heavy, bulky books. We love this travel-sized Kindle Paperwhite e-reader , which makes downloading all kinds of books from anywhere in the world (in your language) so simple. We especially love that this model is IPX8-rated , so you don't have to worry if it accidentally falls in the pool or the bathtub . This IP (ingress protection) rating signifies that it can handle continuous water submersion. It's also so lightweight that you likely won't even notice it in your bag.

GoPro HERO9

HERO9

Leave behind your iPhone and take photos and videos on your next adventure with this tiny camera. It's made to capture the action as you ski, dive, hike, bike and more with its super durable, waterproof design (you can take it down to 33 feet deep according to GoPro). It has tons of compatible accessories to help you film, like a helmet strap and a chest mount . Our tech pros love that it shoots in 5K so you're guaranteed sharp, high-quality memories once your trip is over. If you want the most up-to-date GoPro technology and features, consider the pricier GoPro HERO11 .

LifeProof FRĒ

FRĒ

A waterproof phone case can save your phone from serious damage should it accidentally fall in the pool while you're snapping some photos. We like this LifeProof model because we're confident it will keep your phone dry and unharmed thanks to its built-in screen cover and solid construction: In our tests, it even survived an hour of full submersion in 6.5 feet of water !

Joby GripTight ONE GorillaPod Stand

GripTight ONE GorillaPod Stand

It can be frustrating when no one is around to take a family photo for you. Fortunately, this popular tripod from Joby comes with a clamp for your phone (no matter which model you have) as well as flexible legs that you can wrap around objects like a tree branch.

BUBM Electronic Organizer

Electronic Organizer

This super affordable electronic organizer will keep you from losing track of any cables, chargers, memory cards and more . Offered in ten different colors, we love that it folds up into a flat shape that will easily fit into a backpack or suitcase. There's also a convenient zipper closure for items that you want to store more securely.

Case-Mate Marine Waterproof Floating Pouch

Marine Waterproof Floating Pouch

Though most smartphones these days are waterproof, most of us still don’t feel comfortable taking our precious devices into a body of water. But if you plan on doing any water sports during your trip, bring along this waterproof pouch. Though we haven’t tested it in our Labs, it's rated IPX8 which means that it's been tested to withstand continuous water submersion without risking harm to your device . Our experts like that it features a touchscreen window so you can easily take photos and that, according to the brand, it floats.

45 Ingenious Travel Products To Bring On Vacation In 2022

A stroller that fits in an overhead bin, a reversible packable puffer jacket, a contoured sleep mask, and more items you'll be glad to have on your next trip (and the trip after that, too).

1. A Béis seatback organizer that keeps all your in-flight essentials (e.g., phone, e-reader, magazines, etc.) in the pocket so you don't have to dig around in your bag on the floor throughout the flight.

beige pocket with spaces for different spots for phone, iPad, passport, sunglasses, and more

The seat-back pocket on a plane is great and all, but with all the random magazines and other items, your stuff can get lost. This little thing has a hidden magnetic closure, an interior zip pocket, and four slip pockets to keep your essentials, such as your beloved lip balm, close to you and ready for whenever you need them.

Promising review: "This is the perfect travel accessory I never knew I needed! I’m a travel dork that likes to get all situated and prepared for a long flight. I need my lip gloss and hand lotion in close reach at all times. And now hand sanitizer and wipes as well. All of the little pockets are great. Besides those items, I also packed my Kindle, earbuds, phone, moisturizer, and pens for our customs forms (because ultimately there’s going to be someone around you that forgot their pen!). No more reaching into the seat-back pocket and finding someone’s melted chocolate wrapper, gum, or dirty tissue. No more phone falling through a rip in the pocket. Every travel nerd needs this!! " — Shelby D.

Get it from Béis for $24 (available in black and beige).

2. A Bandolier phone case with a wallet and a strap to keep your phone close to but out of your hands wherever your travel adventure takes you.

model wearing black crossbody phone case and strap

My mom and I both used these when we went to Paris back in January 2020 and loved them. They're super convenient to use and since we visited in the winter, we actually kept them under our coats, so nobody (especially pickpockets) could see them. I like how nice the case and strap looked and that I could hold my phone out over the ledge of the Eiffel Tower ledge for an epic sunset shot, and not worry about it falling to its death. Plus, the attached wallet is perfect to stash a credit card, ID, and even a subway ticket. Can you see it chilling at my side in the right photo? Yep, that's where it was the entire trip and will be every other trip I take.

Promising review: "I’m obsessed with my Bandolier. It’s so useful having my phone and Metro Card so accessible so I don’t have to dig through my bags. I feel comfortable wearing it, and I love the hands-free aspect. I never worry about someone stealing it, and I don’t go anywhere without it!!!" — M.F.

Get it from Amazon for $95 (available in six iPhone sizes.)

3. A portable lock box you can secure around two beach chairs to stash your wallet and phone in as you head into the ocean to snorkel — no more worrying about someone grabbing your stuff when you're face-first in the water.

the green lockbox wrapped around a beach chair

You can also use this in your room to keep valuables protected.

Promising review: "I bought this to take on a vacation to the Virgin Islands because my husband is super paranoid about leaving valuables unattended on the beach. At first, he scoffed that this little plastic thing wasn’t going to stop a thief, and I had wasted my money. Then he admitted that the plastic was pretty sturdy, and it was cool that we could secure the cable to our beach chairs, a fence, or a tree (most petty thieves don’t carry around cable cutters). Next thing I know, he’s storing his wallet, phone, and room keys in it along with mine. He laced the cable through other things he didn’t want stolen, like the bags containing our snorkel gear. Neighboring beachgoers asked about it and where they could get one, and he was quick to demonstrate its features. And when we got home, I overheard him showing it to his friends, with as much approval as he could muster. Hate to say I told you so...OK, no I don’t." — Patsy

Get it from Amazon for $49.95 (available in five colors).

4. A water bottle cup holder adapter because the fact that your water bottle doesn't fit in your cup holder is one of the main annoying factors on your road trip. You can add this to your current cup holder to accommodate your bigger bottle so you stay hydrated the whole time.

BTW — Wine and Whiskey Co is a small biz creating clothes, phones cases, and car accessories !

Promising review: "I had to remove the foam wrap that was on it for it to fit in my cup holder, but now it works perfectly. No more having my water bottle in the seat next to me, rolling on the floor, or spilling 'cause I forgot to close it! Yay!" — sprocketnellie

Get it from Wine and Whiskey Co on Etsy for $12.99+ (available in black and white).

5. An inflatable wedge pillow  because when it comes to getting sleep on planes, you should not be worried about how you look. This comfy pillow will make it so you can fully conk out and catch some ZZZs. Plus, if you aren't ready to sleep yet, you can put your phone inside it and use it as a comfy way to watch your favorite comfort show (that will hopefully help you fall asleep).

reviewer with their head resting on an inflated pillow that rests on their lap and has room for their arms

Promising review:  "I used this on four international flights last month and it made all the difference in the world. It's compact, easy to inflate/deflate, very versatile in how you can position it, doesn't rely on the tray table, and works well for bulkhead seats as well as those with someone in front of you. I can't sleep with my head back without snorting myself awake, so this is a perfect alternative. I can very comfortably lean forward in my seat and sleep almost like I can in a bed.  I'm 6'2" and this pillow is plenty tall enough to just rest on my lap and let me lean forward into it without feeling crunched over.  This pillow will easily let me get enough comfortable periods of sleep on a nine-hour flight that I don't feel completely drained upon arrival. My wife tried mine out before we left on vacation and loved it so much she had me order her one. We both wouldn't travel without them now." — Still Chilly In Colorado

Get it from Amazon for  $19.99.

6. Or a  Trtl neck pillow  if you prefer to sleep sitting up but can never get your neck comfortable enough to sleep longer than five minutes (before you head falls over and wakes you up). This will support your neck so you can actually get some shut-eye.

model wearing a gray trtl pillow while sleeping on a plane

Promising review: "This thing is the greatest thing invented since chicken and biscuits. It's like a nice scarf with just enough support to keep your neck just in the right position. I highly recommend it. Works great with big headphones, too." — Deana Hero

Get it from Amazon for  $29.99+ (available in three colors and in a junior size).

7. A travel wallet with an RFID-blocking shield material to not only keep all your many important travel documents organized, but also safe and ready for you to grab when you need your ID quickly in the TSA line.

reviewer photo of the wallet open, showing all the different pockets for passport, cards, money, phone, and more

The wallet has a passport pocket, boarding pass compartment, three credit card slots, an ID slot, a slim card pouch, slim pocket, a ticket slot, a cellphone pouch, a coin zippered pocket, key holder, and pen holder.

Promising review: "I absolutely love this wallet. I needed a new travel wallet, and this holds everything I need all in one place, and it still closes nicely and stays flat! I can fit my boarding pass, passport, ID, credit cards, money, checked baggage tickets, receipts, and more in it, yet it doesn’t bulk up or look like an overstuffed mess. It's just amazing. The description says it only holds US money, but I just used the boarding pass flap to hold all my Japanese yen (¥), which are larger. I didn’t use the zippered pocket for coins as I much prefer a separate coin purse for that sort of thing. I definitely recommend to anyone who travels a lot!" — Anthony Luu

Get it from Amazon for $13.99 (available in 36 colors).

8. Alleyoop's pen pal  you may think is one of those super-cool multicolored pens you used in grade school, but is actually a super-cool 4-in-1 makeup tool. Throw this in your bag, and you'll have eyeliner, brow liner, lip liner, and a highlighter right at your fingertips. No need for so many makeup products to weigh down your bag.

Jasmin holding the pen

Promising review: "This pen is amazing. I travel a lot for work, and it's so nice to just have to grab this rather than four different pieces of makeup. The less things I have to remember, the better!" — Rachel B.

Get it from Alleyoop for $25 (available in three shades).

9. And a  Pocket Palette  to complete your makeup bag (or lack thereof) with the perfect amount of mascara, lipstick/blush, and BB cream so you don't have to pack every single makeup item you own.

a three pack of mascara, lip/cheek, and bb cream

Promising review: "I travel often for work, and it’s so much easier to pack a few pocket palettes than tote my regular makeup — they’re super carry-on bag/airport friendly! I love my Lancôme but I’d much rather not tote around heavy glass bottles, so I keep a palette at the ready for the gym, in my purse, at my desk at work, etc. — they’re that convenient. For the makeup itself, the quality of the BB cream is great. It’s light, feels and looks natural, and you can get at least two full uses out of the quantity. The lip/cheek color amount is also generous. I personally go for a darker lip generally, but this is good for blush and will last me a while. I love how handy the mascara applicator is, so fun-sized. For someone on the go who isn't soooo makeup savvy that I'm contouring all the time, this product is really practical!" — Maureen

Get a pack of three from Amazon for $11.99 (available in four shades).

10. A roll-top dry bag , a must-have for your beach vacation when you want to ~soak up~ every last bit of sunshine before heading to the airport. This bag is made from a waterproof and watertight nylon, meaning you can stick your wet suit in it and not worry about it making everything else in your bag damp (and smelly) as you make the dreaded trip back home.

the black roll-top bag

Get it from Dagne Dover for $25 (available in two colors).

11. AirFly , a wireless transmitter that'll connect your AirPods (or any other wireless headphones) to the headphone jack on the flight so you can enjoy all the free entertainment without being forced to bring two sets of headphones or use the crappy ones they have the AUDACITY to charge for on some flights.

model with the small white box plugged into the screen on the seat back on a plane with wireless headphones in

Promising review: "Ever since I purchased my wireless Bose earbuds, I always hated having to use another set when I was on an airplane with the seat-back entertainment system. I tried many different models to connect the system to my Bluetooth headsets until I came across this one, and it is amazing! It seamlessly connects to my headset, has very clear and reliable audio, and it takes the stress away from having to carry multiple headsets! Thank you!!!" — Ryan Malloy

Get it from Amazon for $31.99+  (available in five styles).

12. A travel belt  made so you can attach any bag to the top of your suitcase because sometimes the best carry-on bags are not designed with that handy sleeve on the back. With this, you won't have to lug your bag through the airport when your gate is the absolute last one at the end of the longest corridor.

13. A travel pouch that attaches to your bra so you can keep the most important things closest to you (such as your money, credit cards, and a copy of your passport) without fear of some pickpocketing wizard breezing past you, barely touching you but somehow getting away with your stuff.

Promising review: "This was a LIFESAVER while traveling. I kept my cards and cash in it and had no stress about thieves lifting my essentials while traveling heavily pickpocketed cities. I loved it so much, I actually continued to use it when I got home instead of carrying a purse! The top flap did start to unravel after about six months — but this was also after six months of everyday use." — Krista Hinz

Get it from Amazon for $14.95 (available in pink and black).

14. A chic carry-on suitcase that will basically become your new travel BFF. Not only does this suitcase have an ejectable portable battery, it also has a "crush-proof" shell with bumpers for extra protection, a hidden laundry bag that is odor-proof, and a compression system that makes it so you can fit everything you need in your bag. This bag might really have it all.

Promising review: "I've been looking for a carry-on replacement for some time. My last carry-on was from 2007, so it was super old and not very good. Now that I have my July Carry On, I couldn't be more pleased. It's so good from functionality to style. I love the laundry bag — it's great that I don't have to remember to take my own separate laundry bag with me anymore — and the charging is so useful. The wheels are silent and smooth — so much so that on the slightest decline the bag will 100% roll away from you. The bumpers are a bit scratched after some use, but it's hardy/designed to protect what's inside, and I accept that there will be some of that happening on long-haul flights. I really enjoy the personalization as well — I had my name and a little frog etched on the top — so cute!" — Ameeka N.

Get it from July for $245 (available in seven colors; plus you can add personalization for $50).

15. The Airhook — it holds phones and tablets and attaches to the seat in front of you so you can be entertained on every flight, even the ones without seat-back entertainment. Plus, this has a fold-down cup holder, so you don't have to worry about using your tray table and then panicking when you still have half a drink left and need to use the bathroom.

the hook attached to the back of a plane seat with an iPad attached to it

PS: This also works just as great in cars for road trips!

Promising review: "Wow! A product that does what it says it will! I’ve found that the easiest way to be distracted during a flight is to watch movies. But holding up my phone for hours is frustrating. Enter Airhook. It's easy to use (I experimented with it before the flight) and held my device securely. There are less expensive phone holders, but they didn’t look like they’d hold the device if the seat back was jostled (e.g., the passenger in front of you suddenly reclines their seat). My only complaint is that it doesn’t store flat, so it takes a bit more space in my carry-on. A minor inconvenience. Otherwise, I’m very pleased with this purchase." — Wilson Moses

16. Or a hands-free (rotating!) phone mount you can use on more than just the airplane — it can mount on basically any surface from the tray table, arm of a chair, or even a suitcase handle for easy viewing wherever you are.

A phone mounted to the back of an airplane tray table

Promising review : "I bought this nifty gadget about six months for a multi-leg, ultra-long-haul trip and it more than held up the entire duration . I was able to finagle it to fit the tray tables on different planes and like others, I find the height just nice when clamped onto a stowed tray table . It also works on my roller carry-on handle during layovers. However, I find myself using it a lot outside of travel too! Work-wise, I've clamped it onto my office desk shelving to hold my phone at eye level beside my computer . At home, I simply clamped it to a deck of cards and it turns into a versatile stand that I can place on any flat surface. Heck, I've been using it to hold my phone comfortably at eye level while watching videos in bed. It's extremely well-built and I find myself fidgeting with it all the time. Thus far it still feels solid and I don't anticipate breaking it any time soon. Even if it does break, I'll be happy to buy another one or two of it!" — Earendil

17. A compact tote bag designed to fold up into itself so you can store it in your bag without taking up too much space in your suitcase. Plus, it's made out of durable and water-resistant fabric.

Promising review:  "I got the blush-colored bag. It is such a pretty neutral color. I packed it in my overnight bag to have an extra bag for shopping. It came in handy when I needed it! I put my water and light sweater in there. Also, I put my shopping items in there also instead of carrying extra store bags that leave a mark on you wrists . This little bag zips up compact and will always be a necessity when traveling anywhere! I highly recommend getting one!" — Nubia C.

18. A Wallet Ninja with 18 different functions designed specifically to fit in your pocket and save the day when your glasses break and you need a screwdriver to put them back together. Or to help your phone stand up so you can watch TV on the flight. (Both are pretty important TBH.)

the credit-card shaped tool being used as a bottle opener

The card includes an eyeglass screwdriver, letter opener, nail puller, ruler, bottle opener, can opener, box opener, cellphone stand, hex-head nut and bolts, screwdrivers, and a fruit peeler. Reviewers said it is TSA approved, but some had to remove it from their bag and put it on the belt by itself just to be safe.

Promising review: "This is definitely helpful to have on hand! The Ninja is small and slim but punches above its weight class in terms of usefulness. The tools are all things you might find yourself searching through a drawer for and are useful in a pinch. You obviously aren't going to be able to construct a deck with anything on this credit-card-size device, but it fits comfortably in your wallet and will help you open a beer or tighten a screw. The coolest feature that I couldn't find on most other similar products was the credit card phone stand. It is great for planes and other travel applications (I haven't had trouble bringing this on a plane anywhere I have traveled, FYI)."— Mary

19. Some biodegradable hypoallergenic wipes because flying can make you feel gross and these give you the chance to freshen up when there's not a shower in sight.

model using one of the wipes on their arm

These are made with natural tea tree oil, peppermint, ginseng, and oil and come individually wrapped, so they're super easy to stash in your carry-on.

Promising review: "I purchased this product for a recent trip to China so that I could freshen up between flights and also so that I could clean up as needed. I predominantly used these to wipe my body between my long-haul flight and my connecting flight to a local destination. This was a nice alternative to a shower when one simply wasn't available. It just made me feel cool, refreshed, and slightly descuzzed. I'd recommend them for this purpose. As they are perfumed, I wouldn't recommend using them as a toilet wipe for fear of throwing off a critical pH balance for women, but as an overall body cleaner, they are great. :)" — Magdalene Sikora

Then when it's time to leave, just cinch up the bag, throw it in your suitcase, and you can be on your way.

Promising review: "I was tired of fumbling around in my cosmetics case and saw this. I was skeptical, but...WOW! On my recent two-week trip to Europe, with constant laying out and packing up, this item was wonderful. I could find what I wanted quickly, right away . Packing up was just a matter of pulling the drawstring. At first I wasn’t sure about changing to this bag, but now I could not do without it. " — Mojosharkey

Promising review: "We are frequent travelers. I've been on 15 flights with my 17-month-old toddler. I wish I would have bought this a long time ago. It's the best purchase we have ever made. It is sturdy, folds very easy, has a great design, and can literally fit in a reusable grocery bag. Highly recommend!" — Kateryna

the author sitting in a pool with the kindle in her hand

^ Yes, that is me sitting in a pool in Hawaii holding my Kindle over the water without fear or stress that if it falls in, it will break. Truly living my best life.

I've been an avid Kindle user for the past four years, but when I saw the new version, I knew it was time to upgrade. The main selling point is the fact that this one is waterproof. So waterproof, in fact, that it can be in up to 2 meters of fresh water for more than 60 minutes. Plus, it's lighter, has more storage, and the battery last for WEEKS. I took this on vacation with me and was so impressed. I was able to sit on the ledge in the pool and read without worrying about getting the device wet. And I even put it in the water to test, and it still works perfectly. Plus, I used it every day and didn't have to charge it the whole time I was on the trip. That gets a big gold star in my book.

24. A portable rain hood you can wear with any jacket so you don't have to try and pack both your cute and practical jackets when you're tight on space.

model showing the hood attached to the inside of a trench coat

All it is is a hood attached to a vest you wear under *any* jacket to protect yourself (and your hair) from whatever the weather has planned.

Promising review : "I love this! The quality is very nice and it fits great. Wore it last week in the rain with a coat I love that doesn't have a hood and it was perfect. It slips right under your jacket so all you see is the hood, so it pretty much blends in with your jacket. Such a great idea! Wish there were more colors and patterns, I'd order more." — Jill Hammel

Promising review:  "It does as it says it does, allowing my Dell XPS15 to operate a pair of USB devices from my lightning port! The laptop has two USB ports, one of which is always occupied by my USB mouse dongle and the other by my protected USB drive. If I wanted to plug in my phone to switch data or add another thumb drive to transfer a device, everything might have to be disconnected, but not anymore. It was really worth it." —Liberty

And it last for a long time! It will provide about 1,000 gallons of safe drinking water.

Promising review: "This thing is no joke! I took it backpacking in Maine's Bigelow range. When I ran out of the water I brought, I was A-OK with this. On top of one of the lower peaks, I drank from the most disgusting-looking crevice filled with brown scum. I thought, this is going to be safe, but taste horrid. WRONG. IT TASTED LIKE THE FRESHEST SPRING WATER, better than any tap. I'm from Maine, and I've tasted plenty of water right from mountain springs, so take my word for it. One note: It can be a little challenging to use at first. You have to start by soaking it; if it still doesn't work, blow into it a bit. Get one for your outdoor adventures and one for your bug-out bag, which everyone should have in case of natural disaster." — Amazon Customer

reviewer pic of a dark blue rectangular shoe bag with a pair of sneakers in the main compartment

Promising review : "Took this on vacation and I bought two, one for myself and one for my boyfriend. My feet are women’s size 6 and my boyfriend's are men’s size 9. We were both able to fit one pair of slipper/slides and one pair of shoes. My boyfriend and I just placed on top of each other. We had mud on our shoes and sand but it didn’t get mixed up with the rest of our belongings ( hence why I purchased the darker color, I knew the lighter one would stain/look so dirty). I will def use this every single time I travel." — OctoberPaperTrails

model wearing the suit with high waisted bottom and spaghetti strap top with colorblocks of pink and red

This is one of my favorite swimsuits and it has been for the past couple of years. The colors in it are amazing, and it's SO soft. Like, I think it may be the softest suit I've ever worn (I mean that in the best way possible). I wore it a lot two summers ago, and then I sadly didn't have it with me last summer, and I missed it dearly. I was reunited with it recently, and now I am ready to rock it again this summer because this suit deserves all the glory. I feel so stylish when I wear it yet I know that I can actually swim and do other water sports in it as well (I have yet to try surfing, but maybe this year is my year! Haha). The fabric also dries quickly and is fade and snag resistant, so I def think it's worth the higher price tag.

Promising review: "This is an amazing product. It's so simple but works incredible to prevent swelling and pressure on legs while flying. I just flew the first leg of an international flight and used it, and I am on a layover now and had to pause to write this review. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!! It easily attached to tray table, and I adjusted to my desired height. It is like a hammock for your feet. You just prop them up inside the thing/swing/hammock — which is very cushiony — and your feet are hoisted up comfortable. I'm a big girl and weight is no issue. DEFINITELY MUST HAVE ON ALL MY FLIGHTS NOW. This thing is great!!" — Queen

36. A set of six Cadence containers  here to revolutionize the way you bring your travel-sized products with you. These lil' cuties are SO useful — they hold a surprising amount of product, are magnetic, and have a removable label you can customize so you don't accidentally put bodywash in your hair because you can't remember which container has your shampoo in it.

set of seven green small containers with little illustrations on the front

I recently got a set of four of these, and, wow, I love them so much. I used them on a six-day trip recently, and they were perfect. I customized the label so I knew which one was my shampoo vs. conditioner and did a general label for any other things I wanted to bring a long. They do hold a surprising amount. According to the brand, they hold approximately one to two weeks of skincare products, more than two weeks' worth of serum, two to three days' worth of haircare, and more than 15 tablets (for medicine and such). And while two to three days worth of haircare might not seem like enough, I found it held more than that for me, but I also don't wash my hair every single day. They were small enough to slip right into my toiletries bag and go through TSA with no problem. The container was easy to open in the shower (even with wet hands), and I had no leakage from them (like I did from my face wash bottle that will not be making the trip with me next time. SMH). These are an incredibly useful tool anyone who travels wants in their luggage.

It's lightweight, big enough for the whole family to lay out on, and the sand rolled right off. One of the things I loved most about it is that it rolled up super compact and light so it was easy to pack! When you are going to the beach with kids, you drag along a lot of equipment! It was nice that this was easy to pack and travel with. Fun fact: If you have one of those canopies to bring to the beach, this blanket fits perfectly under it!" — Megan

Plus, it comes with a set of earplugs to block out all the noise around you!

Promising review: "These are among the best sleep masks I've tried. I travel a lot so it's important that the mask be room darkening. These are made of high-quality material and excel at this. Additionally, I love the contours for the eyes. Unlike other masks, these don't press against my eyelids at night. One final benefit specific to my needs and those who have dry eyes and too much oil production; I have to place leave-on moistened scrubs over my eyelids at night. Unlike other masks that absorb much of the solution, these hold them firmly in place without too much pressure on my eyes and don't dry them out." — ginsing

I had noticed swelling after three-hour domestic flights, so I was worried about what almost 30K miles would do! I wore these on every leg of the trip and never noticed any swelling — even after the 10–15-hour flights. They are very comfortable, too!" — J. Beaty

Promising review: "I was skeptical at first about how well this little noise machine would work in my hotel room (I am a frequent business traveler). However, skepticism gave way to satisfaction. This little sound machine blocked out hotel noises very well and helped me sleep through the night. For a little machine, it provides very good volume and different noise options. I highly recommend this product!" — Amazon Customer

Howdy Michele, I love to travel. I’ve read so many posts about travel gadgets, but you are the best one. Your article was beneficial in finding the necessary devices. I personally like an anti-theft shockproof backpack, which is ScanSmart TSA friendly and water-resistant. It is useful for everyone.

Thank you so much, Kim 🙂

' src=

Hello, I have gone through your guide and seems to be interesting though I have one more concern on the WiFi devices. Can you recommend me on the best Pocket Device that will work well on anywhere I travel. I have using AllDayWifi but its very slow on their international data plan. I have been considering RentnConnect though I know very little about it

Hi Collins, have you considered this Skyroam device ? It one of the leaders in the market and very compact.

' src=

What about this Trackimo 3G Travel Tracker device this has Light Exposure Sensor – detect/alerts when package or luggage is opened. I am currently using this tracker and i found this very useful to me every time i go travel around the world 🙂

Excellent addition Helen, thank you 🙂

' src=

A tracking device would be a great addition to this list.

' src=

Amazing! This makes traveling easier.

' src=

Definitely brilliant ideas worth sharing

' src=

This IS such a cool list! I thought I had everything, but then I found out the door travel alarm (never would’ve thought of it)!. And I wonder how good the neck support (#33) is because there were PLENTY of times I could have used something like that on my trips.

Hey Trang, the door alarm is such a great idea especially for those times when you just don’t feel safe 🙂 Is there anything you’d add to the list?

' src=

I just carry a small rubber door stop wedge.

' src=

WOW! This is one extensive list of all things travel and certainly one that I will be using to give hints to my friends and family round the holiday season. The new ScanSmart backpack along with the waterproof phone case and solar charger are on top of my list. However my top two purchases are going to be the smart suitcase and the backpack which are absolutely brilliant. Thanks for such a cool list.

' src=

Hi Michele, There are all great ideas. I have one more suggestion for you. Smart Blanket! I used it when flying to Zurich to see my son and his family. The plane was freezing, and there were no blankets to be had. I was the only one that was warm and cozy for the whole 8 hours. I love mine. Got it on Amazon http://amzn.to/2hTYlOP I paid $49.00 for mine. Think they are having a sale on them now. Hope you like my suggestion.

' src=

The door alarm and aeroplane pillow are a great idea to stay comfy and safe! I always take an extension lead when I travel; so that I have more plug sockets in a hotel room, and it also means you don’t need as many adapters when you travel. You also can’t go wrong with baby wipes and small-ish plastic bags in case a seat is wet, a bottle is leaking or you’ve got a mark on your clothes! ✈️?

All brilliant ideas Emily 🙂 Thanks for sharing. I love the baby wipes idea!

Travel + Leisure / Alli Waataja

Travel costs can add up quickly with flights, hotels, and transportation often taking up a significant portion of your vacation budget before you even leave the house. No matter if you’re planning a backpacking trip around South America or checking into a chateau in the south of France, there are countless things to spend money on. A durable suitcase, comfy neck pillow, and a good pair of headphones are a few items that are almost always a good investment for savvy travelers. But what if we told you there were items you could buy that would actually save you money?

Whether you’re looking for an immediate ROI or want products that deliver solid value over time, we’ve rounded up the best things to invest in for your next trip because, when it comes down to it, more savings can quickly mean more travel opportunities in the future.

Freetoo Portable Luggage Scale

Why We Love It: The lightweight and portable design can accurately weigh up to 110 pounds.

What to Consider: You have to be strong enough to lift and hold your packed luggage to use this scale.

Chronic over-packers and travelers who like to take full advantage of checked-bag limits can save on surprise fees with this lightweight luggage scale. Priced under $20, this money-saving travel product pays for itself if it stops you from paying overage fees even one time. The slim, streamlined scale weighs just over three ounces, making it easy to toss in your carry-on or checked luggage to bring with you for your return trip. To use, loop the built-in strap around your luggage handle, grab the scale to lift your luggage off the ground, and let it hang for a few seconds. The LED digital scale will give an accurate weight for up to 110 pounds (50 kilograms) within a 0.1-pound margin. Considering baggage overage fees start at $50 to $200 and up, this may be one of the most valuable money-saving hacks in your bag.

AirFly Bluetooth Headphones Adapter

Why We Love It: You can pair your favorite wireless headphones on flights, at the gym, and more.

What to Consider: Connecting your earphones to the transmitter can sometimes be tricky.

Stop buying disposable pairs of wired headphones when you travel — especially last-minute on the plane — and opt for the Twelve South AirFly SE Bluetooth Wireless Transmitter instead. This portable plug-in device lets you use the wireless headphones or earbuds you already own with any AV systems that require wired listening. All you have to do is plug the AirFly into the standard 3.5-millimeter headphone jack and pair the transmitter with your earbuds via Bluetooth. It works with Android or iOS, though connection can sometimes take a few tries. The device can be used with hotel gym equipment once you arrive — and there's also a Pro model with an even longer battery life that can pair up to two headphones, too.

Epicka Universal Travel Adapter

Why We Love It: It’s compact and easy to switch between plug types.

What to Consider: It won’t work everywhere, and it’s not a voltage converter.

This universal wall adapter will save the day — and the wallet — of frequent international travelers. This adapter will work with plug configurations commonly found in the U.S., UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, eliminating the need to purchase individual adapters for each trip. We love this one in particular because it can simultaneously charge up to six things at once via four USB-A and one USB-C ports, plus the main plug-in AC input so you only need this adapter, your existing cords, and one outlet to charge several devices. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for all countries and it will not convert voltage so, if your electronics are unable to convert voltage on their own, you’ll need a separate gadget.

Tile Starter Pack

Why We Love It: You can audibly ping your tracked items from your phone and even make a phone that’s on silent ring.

What to Consider: Establishing the Bluetooth connectivity can sometimes be spotty.

Luggage trackers are an essential travel product these days, and this two-piece starter pack from Tile is one of our favorites as it helps locate lost items before you spend money replacing them. This duo comes with a Tile Mate and a Tile Slim, giving you more flexibility on the items you are able to track. Worried about lost luggage or pickpockets? Toss the small, square Tile Mate tracker into your suitcase and slip the credit card-style Tile Slim into your wallet. Being able to locate lost or stolen property can save you money by aiding in recovery efforts and insurance claims, not to mention give some priceless peace of mind. Each tracker comes with a three-year battery life, IPF6 waterproof rating, and works with Android or iOS. We also love that you’re able to audibly ping your tracked items from your phone — and make your phone ring, even if it’s on silent, with the Tile Mate — as long as you’re within 350 feet. Tile also works with your smart home devices, and will geolocate your tracked items if they have traveled outside of the 350-foot Bluetooth connectivity range.

OtterBox Symmetry Series

Why We Love It: It’s super tough yet still supports wireless charging methods.

What to Consider: Unlike some Otterbox cases, this does not contain a full-cover screen protector.

Dealing with a busted phone on vacation is almost as painful as it is expensive, especially without insurance. If you don’t already have a tough-as-nails phone case protecting your phone on the daily, consider outfitting one of your most important life accessories with an Otterbox Symmetry Series case before your trip. We like this model because it gives top-rated drop protection without being overly bulky. Raised front edges work to protect your screen upon face-down and side impact, but the case does not have a full-screen protector. You’ll get a nice and tidy slim silhouette that can slip into your pocket, and easy-grip sides for stability when holding your phone. Like most phone cases, these are not universal, so double-check the exact model before shopping.

Takeya Actives Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle 24 Oz.

Why We Love It: You’ll be saving money and reducing plastic bottle waste.

What to Consider: Reusable water bottles need to be cleaned daily.

Staying hydrated is an essential part of traveling, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune to do it. Buying bottled water throughout your trip can be convenient when it’s readily available, but it adds up quickly. This Takeya insulated stainless steel water bottle is an easy and reusable way to keep the liquids coming on your trip. It’ll keep cold drinks cold for up to 24 hours and hot drinks steamy for up to 12. You also won’t have to deal with a sweaty bottle getting your bag wet, and you can feel good about reducing your single-use plastic waste. The sturdy screw-off lid has an adjustable handle and a smaller, optional spout you can drink from. Plus, the 24-ounce size fits perfectly in most cup holders. Even if you’re just drinking water out of this bottle, remember to clean it out every day to prevent harmful biofilm and bacteria from building up inside.

Tide Laundry Stain Remover With Oxi, 2-pack

Why We Love It: It’s great for stain removal on clothes, cushions, and rugs.

What to Consider: It can’t be used on silk, wool, leather, or other fussy fabrics.

While the much-loved Tide pen has come to our rescue many times during our travels, we’ve found it’s best for spot removal. This Tide Laundry Stain Remover With Oxi spray gives us more flexibility, especially when tackling larger stains. Thankfully, it’s available in a three-ounce, TSA-friendly size, so we can just toss it in our suitcase and forget about it until it’s needed. It’ll work its magic on blood, sweat, wine, grass, and just about every type of stain imaginable, and is super easy to use — just spray, wait, rub, and rinse. Not only has this saved us from last-minute laundry bills, it can also be a tool for getting your deposit back after mishaps at Airbnbs. That said, it can also damage certain fabrics, so make sure to be read any labels and spot test before you use this.

Anihana Shampoo Bar

Why We Love It: One bar lasts as long as three bottles of shampoo.

What to Consider: You’ll want to pack a watertight bag or container to store the bar.

If you haven’t already tossed your traditional shampoo bottle for a shampoo bar , we suggest trying it out while traveling. This Anihana Shampoo Bar is made with 100 percent natural ingredients that include nourishing Manuka honey and conditioning almond oil, but there are also variations for both dry and oily hair, too. We love this bar because it lathers well, leaves our hair in superb condition, and has a pleasant scent that isn’t overpowering. It’ll also last for about 80 washes and is great at keeping intact until the very end. Just keep in mind that you’ll want to pack it in a separate container or plastic bag to keep it from rubbing off on other items.

Sea Band Acupressure Wristband

Why We Love It: They are reusable.

What to Consider: They’re not the most stylish looking.

If you know you’re prone to motion sickness , snagging a pair of Sea Bands should be at the top of your list as they work to combat motion sickness using pressure point therapy alone. These bands can be reused over and over unlike motion sickness pills that you’ll have to continually pay to replace — or worse, a prescription patch that may bring on undesirable side effects that could detract from planned activities. You simply slip one band over each wrist as needed so that the built-in plastic node presses on the bottom of your wrist in the correct position. Are they fashionable? Not really, but they can be effective for motion sickness caused by the car, screens, ships, or planes.

Adventure Medical Kit Ultralight Watertight .5

Why We Love It: You’ll have everything you need to deal with simple cuts, scrapes, and ailments.

What to Consider: You’ll need to replace the contents occasionally.

Keeping a first-aid kit on hand is one of the best ways to save money while traveling. The Adventure Kit Ultralight Watertight .5 comes with basic bandages, antiseptic cream, a variety over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammatory medicines, and travel-sized tools to help with splinters, scrapes, and cuts. We all know how expensive standard over-the-counter medicine can be when traveling, if you can even find it in a pinch. Not only will you be able to cover minor health needs from headaches to scrapes, everytime you can grab something out of your first-aid kit instead of heading to the store, it’s money saved on transportation, ATM fees, clinic visits, and more. Plus, this comes already packaged up in an easy-to-find bright yellow bag that can be easily tossed into your travel bag.

Fiskars Sewing Travel Kit

Why We Love It: Even the mini scissors are TSA-compliant.

What to Consider: There’s an equal quantity of all 10 thread colors which may leave you with spare bright shades and not enough black or white.

Of course, on the extreme side of things, a damaged piece of clothing may mean you need to replace it entirely on a trip. However, this tiny travel kit allows you to make near-instant repairs like button replacements and small tear fixes with needles and thread, or even no-sew mends with the included safety pins. The tiny included pair of scissors (TSA-compliant to boot!) is also handy so you’re not forced to rip off a tag and potentially ruin a brand-new item. You also never know when you’ll need a tape measure on your travels — say, to check the dimensions of a personal item or carry-on — so that’s just an added bonus here in this 27-piece set.

ScotteVest Chloe Glow Hoodie

Why We Love It: It holds enough to replace your personal item.

What to Consider: When fully loaded, it can turn really heavy, really fast.

The ScotteVest Chloe Glow Hoodie hides a whopping 18 pockets, over three times as many as other hidden-pocket hoodies. This hoodie can effectively replace your personal item when traveling, allowing you to bring an “extra” bag on board, and possibly avoiding extra luggage fees. You’ll get four exterior pockets, located in the front pouch and sleeve cuffs, and 14 interior pockets laid out within the body of the hoodie. There’s a dedicated space for your glasses, phone, and passport, plus several general pockets of different sizes that can hold everything from your lip balm to your tablet. That said, you’ll want to be choosey with what you stash since a fully-loaded sweatshirt can get weighted down pretty quickly (and even start to sag). We give extra points to this hoodie for its breathable stretch material, thumbholes, and deceptive appearance as a regular zip-up otherwise.

Gonex Compression Packing Cubes (6-piece Set)

Why We Love It: These cubes are durable and machine washable.

What to Consider: You might have to play a little game of in-suitcase Tetris to maximize the space-saving potential.

When is a packing cube working its hardest? When it’s a compression packing cube. For travelers looking to save as much space as possible when packing, this six-piece compression set is a huge hack. These packing cubes compress their contents so you can save space in your suitcase, fit more in each bag, and possibly even skip checked luggage fees. Each bag is a different size, ranging from large (15.4 x 15 x 3.54 inches) to extra small (9.8 x 7.5 x 3.54 inches) and slim (13 x 3.9 x 3.54 inches). There’s also a matching laundry bag that can double as a shoe bag. We love these Gonex cubes because they are durable, come in multiple colors and patterns, and have breathable mesh paneling. The zippers glide in a flash and we are big fans of the functionality of the grab handles — and the fact that these are machine washable after a trip, too.

Liquisnugs Premium Leak-proof Silicone Travel Bottles

Why We Love It: They’re soft, flexible, and can be filled with your favorite products.

What to Consider: They work best for semi-liquids like lotions, cleansers, and scrubs.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of buying travel-sized toiletries, but those cute little bottles are costing you a fortune, especially if you forget to finish them when you return home and repurchase trip after trip. Instead, grab this four-pack of Liquisnugs Premium Leak-proof Silicone Travel Bottles to take on your travels. One of the best things (besides saving money) is that you can load them with your favorite products you’ve already got at home. Shampoo and conditioner? Check. Body lotion and body wash? Check. We like the soft, squeezability of these specific travel-sized bottles , and the non-drip, sports-style opening we’ve found works great for dispensing body scrubs and hair gel, too. However, the wide-mouth tops do not make these a good choice for watery liquids like toner or aftershave so you’ll want different bottle shapes if you frequently pack those products.

Master Lock Portable Small Lock Box

Why We Love It: A built-in cable port means you can charge interior items while they’re being stored.

What to Consider: It’s sized for small valuables only.

Keep your cash, identification, keycards, jewelry and other small valuables safe while traveling with this portable personal safe. The easy-access clamshell design features a personalizable four-digit combination lock, a durable water-resistant outer shell, and a padded, shock-proof interior to protect your items. What makes this truly invaluable is the cable lock cord that releases with the push of a button and can be wrapped around or threaded through a fixed anchor, like a tree, bedframe, or pole. We especially love whipping this out any time we’re in a travel situation where we would need to rent an overpriced locker, like on a cruise shore excursion, but it also flaunts its value in hostels, on overnight trains, at campsites, and on cycling trips when you just need to hold a few things.

W&P Porter Silicone Reusable Bags

Why We Love It: They’re way sturdier and more eco-friendly than standard plastic bags.

What to Consider: The larger sizes can get bulky when packed full.

If you’re constantly tempted to buy last-minute snacks before boarding a plane or train, or are often so desperate to eat that a $14 snack box is a frequent in-flight purchase, plan to prevent that with solid, reusable bags you can pack at home. These silicone versions are extra sturdy and easy to clean. Not only can you bring your own food, you can slip one of these in your bag while out and about and save any unfinished treats for later, too. Sizes range from 10 ounces all the way up to 50 ounces, and there are even upright versions you can use to later prepare food in a microwave (right from the bag!).

Tips for Buying Money-saving Travel Products

Figure out where you usually spend money.

Does your stomach always seem to grumble after takeoff? Are your travel-size toiletries always left partially empty? Do you break a sweat when it comes time to plop your checked bag on the scale? Don’t worry, no one is perfect. But, in order to figure out the best products to buy to save money while traveling, you’ll have to be honest about what you have a habit of spending money on during trips. Once you’ve zeroed in on the culprits, identify products that will help you keep these habits in check.

Consider size and space

Just because a travel product can save you money, doesn’t mean it’s worth it. You’ll want to think about the overall value in line with how much space it will take up in your bags. Being compact, portable, and durable enough to withstand many trips are a few factors that can make or break whether a certain money-saving travel product is right for you as well.

Consider price versus value

Crunch some numbers before committing to a purchase. Avoid cheap or cheaply made products with minimal returns; you’ll just be creating waste in exchange for something that probably has a low overall value. Consider pricey products only when they can save you money in the long run — a digital translator could be a useful investment for someone who frequently travels internationally, for example. The key here is value, so compare the item’s price versus its true benefit to you.

Yes! Bringing your own food and drink on a plane from home can be a great way to save money. Airport eats are often expensive and plane snacks are rarely worth the price. Most flights serve complimentary non-alcoholic drinks, though, when it comes to alcohol, you’ll have to resign to purchasing everything inflight since it’s illegal to bring your own alcohol on board for consumption. If you do bring your own food or drink from home, remember to follow security rules and restrictions in terms of volume, especially for liquids.

There are tons of products that can help you save money, and this list is just the beginning. Some products can prove to be priceless, like an unlocked smartphone. Even an inexpensive smartphone can be used for calls, texts, research, notes, and photos in a foreign country. Products that can be used several times, will last for many trips, and can be used in multiple scenarios are a good place to start. Think of which basic items you find yourself purchasing over and over on trips and see if there is a reusable version or a product that eliminates your need to repeat buy something frequently. Products that take care of infrequent but essential and often expensive needs can also be big money savers.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

innovative travel products

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.
