Khajjiar Travel Guide

It is not difficult to understand why Khajjiar is often referred to as the mini-Switzerland of India. The wide grassy areas that meet dense forests of deodar and cedar forests, with cottages dotting them at occasional intervals, lend them an appearance similar to the Swiss countryside. If you have seen similar landscapes in movies and magazines, and wished there was such a place closer to home, well, here it is. You can choose to drive during your trip to Khajjiar, but you would be missing a lot of the fun than if you were trekking from Chamba. The beauty that marks the route is well worth the time and effort.

An Insight into Khajjiar Tourism

The story behind how Khajjiar came to be known as the “mini Switzerland” of India is an interesting one. It was Mr. Willy T. Blazer, Vice Counsellor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland, who first called it so. He was so enamoured of its landscape that he placed a sign board of a yellow Swiss hiking footpath which showed the distance from Bernes, the capital of Switzerland, to Khajjiar - 6194 km. Even though this happened back in 1992, the attraction of the place has not diminished even a bit.

Khajjiar is a small hill station located in Chamba district, and is a famous tourist attraction in Himachal Pradesh. You should visit this quaint and dreamy place to simply celebrate its existence. Just walk wherever you want, breathe freely, feel the touch of the soft grass or walk as far as your legs take you. Most of the people who visit it are attracted by its landscape, and enjoy nothing better than just feasting their eyes to this wonderful panorama laid out by nature.

Khajjiar is incomplete without its lake, which is known as Khajjiar Lake . It stands right in the middle of the meadows that are surrounded by thick cedar forests. The lake is beautiful by itself, and plays a large part in contributing to the overall beauty of the area. The lake hosts a floating island. Upon closer look, you discover that it’s a patch of grass which floats continuously on the surface.

Other ways of spending time at the lake are horseback riding and zorbing. You can also enjoy spectacular views of Mt. Kailash from the lake. If you are a trekking enthusiast, you will have a lot to look forward to at Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary . The landscape here is marked by dense coniferous forests and crisscrossed by several streams, both of which create the right conditions for trekking and nature walks. Major wildlife attractions in the sanctuary are Himalayan black marten, barking goral, leopard, jackal, langur and bear.

Khajji Nag Temple is another tourist attraction to visit in Khajjiar. Besides being a religious structure, it is also a historic one, as it was built during the 12th century. Located on the banks of the lake, it is dedicated to the Lord of the Serpents. Its architecture shows a wonderful fusion of Hindu and Muslim styles. Inside, there are images of Lord Shiva, Goddess Hadimba, Pandavas and Kauravas.

Those dense forests that encircle the meadows at Khajjiar are home to some lovely villages. Two of these are Rota and Ladi. Both of these villages are famous for their apple orchards and the amazing views they offer of the snow-covered hills and Mt. Kailash.

Faqs about khajjiar.

The bowl-shaped, pine-ringed meadow at Khajjiar is a major tourist draw, 22km down the Chamba road from Dalhousie. It's touted as a 'mini-Switzerland' and would be attractive if it weren't constantly thronged by holidaymakers and horse-ride hawkers.

The ugly cluster of restaurants at its north end doesn't help either, though hidden among it you could seek out Khajjinag Temple .

Besides the deep sense of devotion encircling the temple complex, the fusion of Mughal and Hindu architecture is captivating too.

Lord Shiva Statue

The Lord Shiva Statue is among the top sights in Khajjiar. Actually, allow us to rephrase that. This statue is among the top sights in Himachal Pradesh as well as one of the top 10 tallest statues in India. As folklores go, the past rulers of the town built this statue to impress the Lord and earn his blessing. Well, as the copper statue shines when the sun falls on it and as nature’s charms dazzle in the surrounding area in abundance, it seems the land is truly blessed by the lord!

Panch Pandav Tree

There are two factors that make the Panch Pandav Tree a must-add to a travel guide to Khajjiar. The first factor is nature’s unique favour and the second one is a strong mythological value. Unique because, unlike most deodar trees, this deodar tree’s base is split into 6 parts. Mythologically significant because the Pandav brothers are said to have taken shelter nearby. Locals say that the 6 shoots of the tree represent the five Pandav brothers and their wife Draupadi.

Kailash Village Baramadpur

Set against the backdrop of dense pines, deodars and lush green meadow, Khajjiar is exquisitely nestled down in the foothills of the imposing Dhauladhar ranges of the Western Himalayas. The dish-shaped Khajjiar provides a panoramic and breathtaking perspective to visitors.

Khajjiar was officially baptized by the Swiss Ambassador on July 7, 1992 and as per records, a stone was taken here and forms part of the stone sculpture erected in Berne, capital of Switzerland.

The journey from Chamba to Dalhousie to this idyllic scenic spot may be undertaken either by buses run by the HP Tourism Development Corporation or by one’s own vehicle. Khajjiar is about 95kms from Pathankot Railway Station and 130 kms from the Gaggal Airport in the district Kangra.

Khajjiar is famous for the popular Khajji Naga shrine dedicated to the serpent god from which the name is believed to have been derived. The temple dates back to the 10th century and is interspaced with different patterns and images on the ceiling and wooden posts. A curious blend of Hindu and Mughal styles of architecture is reflected in the wooden carvings on the ceilings and wooden posts. The image carvings are said to represent the Kauravas who were tied up here in the hideout by the Pandavas. The temple consists of a spacious congregation hall sufficiently enclosed by wooden supports. The dome-shaped shrine is made of slates locally extracted from limestone quarries. Adjoining are other shrines of Shiva and Hadimba goddess also.

Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House was the past residence of Sara Winchester, widow of William Winchester, and heiress to the massive Winchester fortune from the production of the Winchester repeating rifle–also known as "the gun that won the West."

Over the course of five decades, Sara Winchester created what is now known as the Winchester Mystery House, hosting thousands of visitors each year.

What makes this popular tourist attraction so mysterious is the renovation choices made by Sara Winchester. Local lore attributes the false stairs, misleading doors, and 160 different rooms as a measure to evade paranormal spirits stemming from her family's past. San Jose Flea Market

Address: 1590 Berryessa Rd, San Jose, CA 95133, USA

Since it opened its doors in 1960, the San Jose Flea Market has been one of the most popular attractions among both locals and tourists in the city. It features 1,000-2,000 vendors who sell all types of goods on the weekends. You’d be surprised to learn that this massive flea market opened with only 20 sellers in the 60s.

It was originally founded by George Bumb Sr. when he noticed people throwing out usable items. He saw an opportunity. The flea market has a wide range of alleys, aisles, and restaurants with just about anything you can think of.

Whether you’re looking for fruit and vegetables, electronics, clothing, accessories, handmade gifts, fabrics, homewares, antiques, or food made on the spot, you’ll find exactly what you need and sometimes be overwhelmed by the countless, seemingly endless choices.

San Pedro Square Market is one of my favorite places because of the great food options. It’s the perfect downtown meeting place for friends, and a great place to stop in if you want to try a bunch of foods that are famous in San Jose.

You can get the best organic meat from Golden Gate Meat Company, the best oyster from the Hog Island Oyster Company, the best cheeses from Cowgirl Creamery, and the best herbs and beans from Rancho Gordo. There are also mouth-watering pastries, aromatic coffees, amazing arts, and beautiful crafts. Plus, the ambiance is always lively and entertaining thanks to varied live music.

#4 Visit Some Wineries

burrell school winery

There are quite a few wineries in and around San Jose that are open to visitors for wine tasting. We often make this a part of our itinerary and have been to a number of the wineries in the area. Some that I would recommend visiting in the city are Coterie, J. Lohr, and Travieso.

If you don’t mind going a little outside the city, we enjoy going to Burrell School Winery that is housed in an old one room schoolhouse from the 19th century, and Regale Winery & Vineyards in a beautiful hilltop Tuscan-style villa. They are next to each other about 18 miles south of the city.

#5 Los Gatos Creek Trail

This one is for fellow outdoorsy types who want to enjoy the nice weather and some fresh air. The 9.7-mile Los Gatos Creek Trail runs alongside the Vasona Reservoir, providing hikers with great views.

The entire trail is long, but that doesn’t mean you have to hike the whole thing. There are a few different access points where you can join the trail and go as far as you like before turning around. Maybe start at Oak Meadow Park and walk the 1.2 miles to Miles Avenue.

The San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League were established in 1991, and two years later, they moved to the famous SAP Center . You can watch the Sharks compete in the Western Conference with thousands of Sharks fans from fall to spring at the ‘Shark Tank.’

Not a fan of hockey? Many other concerts and events regularly occur in SAP Center, including Mixed Martial Arts events. The USA Olympic Gymnastics Trials were held there in 2012 and 2016. And your trip to the city should involve attending one of the events that frequently occur at the SAP Center.

Make sure to check out the Plaza de Cesar Chavez which is close to the SAP Center. There are beautiful fountains that children play in during the summer months.

#8 Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum

Once you are finished touring the indoor artifacts make sure to make your way outside to experience the gardens and grounds.

Without a doubt, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is one of the few places in San Jose that succeed in giving its visitors a whole ancient Egyptian experience without having to travel over 6 thousand miles for 14 hours in Egypt.

Other run rides include RailBlazer, a single-rail coaster and Flight Deck, an inverted coaster. But these extreme rides aren’t the only reason to go to the park. There’s all kinds of entertainment options, as well as rides for the little ones, and plenty of food stands.

The park is only open on the weekends, and the water park is only open in the summer. You can get tickets here .

The whole garden is 5 1/2 acres and contains more than 3,500 plantings and 189 varieties. We were blown away by the peacefulness of the rose garden. It really is worth a visit!

The unique thing about these gardens is that they’re maintained by volunteers. It’s free to get in and it’s open from 8am to sunset every day.

One of the best places to walk around and enjoy some shopping in San Jose is Santana Row. It’s a shopping area that has 30 restaurants, 50 shops, a movie theater, and the modern Hotel Valencia .

I had no idea what to expect when I arrived here the first time, and I was blown away by how awesome the area is. It’s only a 6 minute walk to the Winchester Mystery House, which must be experienced.

While it’s mostly high-end shopping and you’ll definitely see your share of luxury cars driving by, there’s still a casual air about it, with outdoor events and street performers. If you don’t know what to do in San Jose, definitely head to Santana Row. You can spend hours there.

Travel Planning Guide

🚙💨  Where should I book my rental car?

Renting a car is one of the best ways to get around in California, no matter where you’re visiting. Public transportation can only get your so far, even in big cities. I always rent with  Discover Cars , which checks the prices of all major rental car companies, so you get the best rates.

🛌  What’s the best way to book my accommodations?

For hotels and vacation rentals,  Booking.com or Expedia.com  are the best sites, but you can also book through TripAdvisor. If you’re considering renting a house instead, don’t forget to also check  VRBO , which is often cheaper than Airbnb.

🧳  What do I pack for California?

Head to the our California Packing List or Disneyland Packing List  to get all the info on packing.

✈️  What’s the best site to buy flights to California?

For finding cheap California flights from around the world, I recommend  Skyscanner . I’ve also had pretty good luck with Kayak.com .
