Lagardère Travel Retail lifts curtain on Warsaw commercial transformation

By Kapila Ireland in Airports , Europe , Latest News , Retail News July 24, 2015 Comments Off on Lagardère Travel Retail lifts curtain on Warsaw commercial transformation

Lagardère Travel Retail unveiled its new €10m ($11m) retail offer at Poland’s Warsaw Chopin airport composed of duty-free, food service and travel essentials to key partners and media representatives on Thursday.

Lagardère Travel Retail CEO Dag Rasmussen outlined the company’s “B2C4B” approach in a presentation that started proceedings for the event. The aim of the approach is to satisfy each and every traveller along their journey, guarantee the highest quality standards on our three businesses, hence maximising value creation.

“Relying on diversity, innovation and operational excellence, we create special moments, like bubbles, like journeys inside the journey,” he said.

Experiencing Warsaw’s specialities lies at the heart of the new offer at Chopin airport where Lagardère Travel Retail now operates over 9,000sq m across both T1 and T2, with T1 accounting for 5,000 sq –a 70% increase on space versus the previous T1.

Following a tender process in August and September 2013, the retailer secured the 10-year contract to run duty-free, food service and travel essentials stores in terminal one. The retailer built 25 new stores, with nine new concepts created (7 introduced) and the stores officially opened in May this year.

Duty-free accounts for 39% of floor space while food service stands at 43% and travel essentials 19%. In terms of duty-free the retailer “next generation of duty-free” concept was introduced with the new format of Aelia Duty Free stores featuring the latest in digital features including a B2C website (www.aeliadutyfree.pl), the possibility to pre-order online and collect in-store and staff equipped with tablets.

Aelia Duty Free2

Rasmussen told DFNIonline about why the retailer chose Warsaw to present the concept: “We chose Warsaw because it’s a very good illustration of concept of our strategy, which is to be in duty-free and luxury, but also travel essentials and food service. Here we have the whole terminal with these three segments. It’s very good illustration of our promise – to experience new horizons every day.”

The concept has featured on a smaller scale at Marseille, Auckland and Zagreb airports and by the end of this year will feature in Nice and Luton airports.

“The Art of gifting is about a seamless shopping experience. ‘Here and nowhere else’ represents how each store reflects each country. We don’t want to copy and paste or plug  and play concepts, although we do have commonalities, we want a new concept each time,” he explained.

The concept addresses the challenge of duty-free becoming homogonised. “We see that issue globally in the retail offer. With Premium Food Gate we have a very specific gourmet food offer so you can find things you can’t find anywhere else. We sell Polish wine, which is a best seller to our surprise and the liquor section highlights the the local vodka. We try to have this uniqueness so an international traveller will see what he usually wants but also find something specif to the location,” said Rasmussen.

Premium Food Gate

Luxury brands Burberry, Ermenegildo Zegna, Salvatore Ferragamo, Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren featured for the first time at Chopin airport in the new The Fashion Gallery concept. A premium polish delicatessen Food Gate was introduced featuring a carefully selected offer of regional products made by 65 local producers running family businesses, passionate about cultivating culinary traditions and transmitting almost forgotten recipes – perfect for travellers looking for something for their own consumption or for gifting.

Gift Shop

The new Travel Essentials stores (nine in total including Relay, Virgin and Discover) debuts the company’s proprietary ebook platform which allows travellers to choose a book title, pay and receive a coupon to download the book to their device. Other concepts include a Le Conaisseur liquor store, a Samsung electronics store, a Gift Shop,

The Food Service offer includes a McDonalds, an Italian Bricco Café and Polish quick service restaurant Chief’s. Meanwhile, the Misa café, located landside, offers affordable Polish cuisine tailored to travellers and airport staff alike.

PFG 2

The retailer’s proposition for T1 has resulted in a number of key factors, Rasmussen stated.

These include a natural flexibility in terms of retail planning to maximise sales revenues; the capacity to offer a great diversity of concepts (innovative new concepts can be supported and secured by proven ones); a deep analysis of customers’ real needs and expectations (price and value wise, in the three businesses) and the possibility to organise (cross) promotions or loyalty programs rewarding and encouraging passengers to shop more (product and concept wise). “The cross promotion programme has worked very well and we have seen 8% increase in sales thanks to these vouchers,” Rasmussen added.

Warsaw Chopin saw 10.5 passengers travelling through in 2014 – a number which is expected to increase by 50% by 2024 to 15.7m. The majority of passengers at the airport are residents of Poland (75%) and most tend to be male (61%) with the average age of 39 years. Around 78% of travellers are passengers with higher education (78%) including 46% being specialists with degrees, 43% on business trips and 25% visiting friends and family.

Lagardère Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Arnaud Lagardère steps down while contesting indictment

lagardere travel retail warszawa

FRANCE. Lagardère SA today revealed that its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Arnaud Lagardère is to contest an indictment against him issued by a French court on Monday. Lagardère SA is the parent company of Lagardère Travel Retail.

The statement said Arnaud Lagardère had informed Lagardère SA of the indictment, against which he will appeal.

“This indictment essentially concerns facts relating to personal companies wholly owned by Arnaud Lagardère and not involving any Lagardère group companies,” the company said.

“As regards Lagardère SA, the indictment relates solely to facts dating from 2018 and 2019, qualified as vote buying, abuse of power and dissemination of false or misleading information, which Arnaud Lagardère firmly disputes.

“In the context of his indictment, Arnaud Lagardère has been provisionally banned from holding executive office, a measure which he is contesting and against which he intends to appeal, but which nevertheless will oblige him to resign his executive offices within the Group, despite the appeal.

“The directors have taken note of this measure and will meet in the near future to take all provisional measures required to ensure the Group’s governance pending Arnaud Lagardère being able to resume the management of the Group.

“The directors wish to reiterate that Arnaud Lagardère is presumed innocent, and that an indictment in no way prejudges the outcome of the proceedings.”

Note: Lagardère is an international group with operations in more than 40 countries worldwide. It employs some 31,300 people and generated revenue of €8,081 million in 2023.

The Group focuses on three divisions: Lagardère Publishing (Books, E-Books, Partworks, Stationery, Board Games and Mobile Games); Lagardère Travel Retail (Travel Essentials, Duty Free & Fashion and Foodservice); and Lagardère News (Paris Match, Le Journal du Dimanche, JDD Magazine, and the Elle brand licence). ✈

Arnaud Lagardère, head of Vivendi-owned French publishing and travel retail giant Lagardère Group, has been forced to resign as CEO of the company following his indictment related to accusations of embezzlement.

“In the context of his indictment, Arnaud Lagardère has been provisionally banned from holding executive office, a measure which he is contesting and against which he intends to appeal, but which nevertheless will oblige him to resign his executive offices within the group, despite the appeal,” it added.

News of the forced resignation followed reports on Monday that Lagardère had been questioned by a Paris judge in relation to accusations of embezzlement.

The Lagardère Group, which was founded by Lagardère’s father Jean-Luc Lagardère in 1992, is home to publishing giant Lagardère Publishing and Lagardère Travel Retail. Its assets also include Paris Match and Le Journal du Dimanche and top radio stations Europe 1.

Vivendi took full control of the Lagardère Group in November 2023 following approval from European Commission, under its EU merger legislation,in return for selling publishing assets Editis and Gala magazine, which was part of its Prisma Media subsidiary.

Lagardère was retained as CEO of the group.

Lagardère CEO to Resign After Being Charged With Embezzlement

(Bloomberg) -- Arnaud Lagardère, the French business scion who heads a publishing group now controlled by Vivendi SE, was charged with alleged embezzlement and will resign as chief executive officer of Lagardère SA.

The charges against the 63-year-old executive also include vote buying, abuse of power and breach of trust, disseminating false or misleading information and failure to publish accounts, according to a person familiar with the matter. He has been placed under judicial supervision, banned from holding executive roles and needs to post a bond of €200,000 ($214,000), said the person, who asked not to be named discussing a legal case.

Lagardère, who is chairman and CEO of Lagardère SA, will “resign his executive offices within the group,” the listed company said in a statement Tuesday, adding that directors will meet soon to consider governance. He “firmly disputes” the charges and plans to contest and appeal the ban on his holding executive roles.

“This indictment essentially concerns facts relating to personal companies wholly owned by Arnaud Lagardère and not involving any Lagardère group companies,” the company said. “As regards Lagardère SA, the indictment relates solely to facts dating from 2018 and 2019.”

Lagardère SA shares were 4.2% higher at 2:00 p.m. in Paris trading.

The businessman’s attorney, Sebastien Schapira, declined to comment, while Vivendi, which controls Lagardère SA, reiterated on Monday its “support to the Lagardère group.”

The charges come after the prominent heir was questioned on Monday by a Paris judge. French daily Le Monde reported that he’s suspected of using around €80 million in company funds for personal expenses such as home renovations and private jet flights, as well as paying off debt related to inheritance. According to the newspaper, he’s also alleged to have unlawfully secured the support of Qatari shareholders during a 2018 corporate battle with Amber Capital.

Lagardère’s legal woes are a dramatic twist for the businessman often glossing the pages of gossip magazines and cited in France as being at the center of one of the highest profile succession debacles in the nation’s corporate history.

His father, Jean-Luc Lagardère, founded a French industrial and media giant whose influence reached deep into the country’s military and political establishment. After his sudden death in 2003, Arnaud took the helm and presided over the once sprawling conglomerate’s steady demise.

The son jettisoned much of the business to focus on publishing and travel retail and fended off takeover attempts that included a tussle between rival French billionaires Vincent Bollore and Bernard Arnault. The former prevailed through a plan to buy out the stake held by Amber Capital, which had attempted to shake up the Lagardère company.

In 2021, just as Vivendi was sealing the deal with Amber, French financial police raided Lagardère’s Paris headquarters searching for evidence of abuse of power, presentation of inaccurate accounts, misuse of corporate assets and vote buying.

The investigation began on April 30 of that year following a complaint from Amber Capital and an alert from France’s stock market regulator Autorité des Marchés Financiers, the justice ministry source said.

Lagardère retains a stake of around 11% in Lagardère SA, which had revenue of €8.1 billion last fiscal year and paid Arnaud Lagardère €3.5 million. At the end of December, Vivendi had a stake of 59.8%, Qatar Holding LLC 11.5% and Arnault’s Financiere Agache had nearly 8%.

Lagardère SA’s holdings include the Hachette imprint, Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper, Europe 1 radio and the Relay travel retail chain. Luxury giant LVMH, controlled by Arnault, is in talks to buy French glossy magazine Paris Match from Lagardère.
