Nsikayesizwe David Junior Ngcobo, who is more popularly known as Nasty C, is the voice of his generation. The multi-award winning South African rapper originates from Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, and has been dubbed âThe Coolest Kid In Africa.â He takes this role seriously and has said: âI never chase the dream, I design it.â
Now he is amplifying that voice and embracing his global audience.
Recently signed to Def Jam Records, through a joint venture with Universal Music Africa, the 23-year-old rapper is prepping for the release of his third album, Zulu Man With Some Power. The signing sees the South African artist join a music royalty roster that includes the likes of Kanye West, Justin Beiber and Nas.
A legend-in-the-making himself, Nasty C says: âItâs powerful to be a part of the Def Jam family. Itâs an iconic record label and has made the careers of many of the artists I look up to.â
For five years, Nasty C has had a singular focus: to push the boundaries of his own potential. As a result, the rapper-producer has released three mixtapes, two albums and featured on pan-African and international chart-toppers.
This hitmaker has been the most streamed South African artist on Apple Music for four years in a row. With over 120 million streams, Nasty Câs sophomore effort, Strings And Bling, was the most streamed South African and African album on the streaming platform in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The album spawned three multi-platinum singles – King, Jungle and the radio smash, SMA – as well as the platinum single, Strings And Bling. A further 14 songs off this album were certified gold.
Nasty C has the ear of the world and in 2019, he was the only South African nominated for a BET Hip Hop Award in the Best International Flow category. That year, he was also nominated for an MTV Europe Music Award. Strings and Bling won him two South African Music Awards and two AFRIMMAs.
Preceding this success, Nasty C released his debut album, Bad Hair (2016) and its re-release, Bad Hair Extensions, which featured French Montana. The seminal album earned him four Metro FM Music Awards, a South African Music Award and a BET Awards nomination.
It was proof that his breakthrough single, Juice Back, and his boundary-breaking mixtape, Price City (2014) were not just luck. Juice Back became a continent-wide smash and so followed a remix featuring Nigerian muso, Davido and South African rapper, Cassper Nyovest.
He has toured Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia and North America and brought his own live performance property, the Ivyson Tour, to Kenya, Zimbabwe, Namibia and more. Nasty C has always sought to make the globe even smaller through his music.
He has used his voice to bring the world to Africa but it speaks volumes that he now intends to take Africa to the world. One of the ways he will be doing this is through his upcoming album, Zulu Man With Some Power. Zulu is one of the cultures that originates from South Africa.
Nasty C says: âThe title of my album was inspired by me openly embracing being Zulu. I am not going to pressure myself to drop a song rapping only in Zulu or to dress in traditional Zulu clothes all the time. I want to make it cool to express your culture in your own way. It feels like a big statement to make. It feels like Iâm recognizing the power and influence of my people.â
The forthcoming album is preceded by a single called There They Go. The trap ditty is produced by American producer, Cxdy, and sees Nasty C reflect on writing 16s by the light and shaking off his haters.
âI sign deals, but I own my soul,â he raps on There They Go. Following his new deal with Def Jam, Nasty C says: âI have a great team that sees my vision. I am still me and no matter what deals I sign; I am not letting anyone dictate my sound or image.â
Part of Nasty Câs vision was to invite Andrew Sandler (who has worked with Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and more) to direct the There They Go music video and show his Durban hometown through a new lens. This is merely the beginning of Nasty C using his voice to present his narrative.

The track arrives on the heels of another single, âNo Big Deal.â
Published on
South African rap sensation Nasty C unveils a brand new single entitled âBlackoutâ today via Def Jam Recordings. It marks his first release of the year and sets the stage for much more to come.
âBlackoutâ highlights his bold and bulletproof flow over a groove-laden beat teeming with uncontainable energy. Hinging on his deft and elite wordplay, it culminates on a chantable chorus punctuated by quotable lines.
On the song, he remembers days when he had meals without a table, rapping, âI used to eat maas on the kitchen floor/ Nice Rocomamas your mommy/ I just took a drive to the liquor store/ JĂ€ger for the boys and some vibbe for the mommy

Mellow man ace: hypest from cypress.
It arrives on the heels of the incisive and infectious âNo Big Deal,â which has just begun to gain traction on streaming platforms. Meanwhile, last yearâs Ivyson Army Tour Mixtape cemented him as an artist-to-watch. Beyond tallying over 10 million-plus streams and counting, it incited the applause of tastemakers around the world.
Upon arrival, DJ Booth hailed it as one of â5 New Albums You Need to Hear This Week on Audiomackâ and exclaimed, âThe South African rapper loosens up and celebrates a victory lap.â OkayAfrica touted it among âThe 10 Best South African Songs of the Monthâ and noted, âProlific rapper Nasty C boldly returns to his roots with the trap-centric Ivyson Army Tour Mixtape .â Meanwhile, Hot 97 hosted him for an in-depth on-air interview.
âBlackoutâ drops at a critical time when South Africaâs load shedding is at an all-time high. Nasty C opens with the all too familiarââIâm a load shedding baby, I crank the genny.â Load shedding is when the demand for electricity exceeds the available supply, and black outs happen for several hours a day, often multiple times a day to rotate the available electricity.

Born in Soweto, South Africa on February 11, 1997, Nsikayesizwe Ngcobo is a rapper, songwriter, and producer better known as Nasty C. He released his debut mixtape, One Kid, a Thousand Coffins (2012), when he was just 14. He rose to prominence the following year when he released his second mixtape, Price City (2015), and the hit single âJuice Back.â Anticipation was high by the time he released his debut album, Bad Hair, and the single âHell Naw.â Within 24 hours of the albumâs release, it became the most streamed album in South Africa. After releasing the expanded edition of his debut â entitled Bad Hair Extensions â at the end of 2016, he signed with Universal Music Africa. His second studio album, Strings and Bling, was issued in 2018 and included the singles âJungle,â âKingâ (featuring A$AP Ferg), the Number 1 hit âSMAâ (featuring Rowlene), and âLegendary.â The album rose to the top of the South African Albums chart and made him a star in his home country. Nasty C won several AFRIMA awards including Best African Rapper / Lyricist and Best African Collaboration and completely several successful tours. In March 2020, Nasty C signed a deal with Def Jam Records and released the single âThere They Go,â which was followed by the Lost Files EP. He also collaborated with rapper T.I. on the single âThey Donât,â which was both a protest song and a benefit single aiding the organizations Until Freedom and Solidarity Fund. Nasty Câs next album, Zulu Man with Some Power , was released in August 2020 and easily slid into the number 1 position on the South African Albums chart. The release earned him the Best Male Rap award at the African Musik Magazine Awards. Nasty C returned to the mixtape world with the release of Ivyson Army Tour Mixtape , which was issued to coincide with his tour of the same name. In 2023, Nasty C released his fourth studio album, I Love It Here , which included the single âNo More.â Throughout his career, Nasty C collaborated with many international artists including Major Lazer, Ice Prince, DJ Maphorisa, JP the Wavy & Bankroll Got It, and others.

Nasty Câs âIvyson Army Tourâ Is an Underwhelming Mid-term Assessment from a Star Student
Nasty C Ivyson Army Tour is a fleeting musical euphoria, snippeting the sort of âhighâ that Nasty Câs intimate records can evoke, while distinguishing itself as a well-written, well vocalised and poorly arranged body of workâŠ
By Chinonso Ihekire
On Nasty Câs both arms are tattoos that speak volumes into his inspirations. On his left arm is a trio of an eye, the letter V and a sun. And on his right arm is the phrase âIvyson.â He inks this metaphor, which is really a memoir of his late mother, Ivy, hence, Ivyâs son. It has been the moniker for his long-running tour, which peaked around May this year, and would continue till October. And now it is the inspiration behind his 10-tracker Ivyson Army Tour mixtape which stamps his artistic prowess as an intimate storyteller with an egocentric aura to his craft. Â Â Â Â Â
Like he did with his acclaimed 2020 record , Zulu Man with Some Power , the Johannesburg Hip Hop maverick returns with some personal narratives on âIvyson Army Tour.â In the second track, âAyeâ featuring Blxckie and Emtee, he goes on a rant about his scuffles with his exes. âShe actinâ like she donât know who I am, okay/ Youâre an influencer on the gram, okay/ All of the hatinâ it never works/ Bitches ignore and Iâm never hurt.â This is a typical Nasty C braggadocio setting the pace for the tape. He revamps the same cynicism that colours the Zulu Man with Some Power album, especially on a song like, âZone.â
The same energy seeps into the third song, âWhat I Likeâ featuring Tellaman and Nadia Nakai. âClassy ass, ratchet ass, balanced ass bitch/ PG 18, get some action ass bitch/ Sheâs a cheater ayyâ on âWhat I Like,â Nasty C continues on his rant, glamourising the âbad bitchâ lifestyle, while stating his indifference towards it. He keeps up this ante, in the sixth song, âImport,â featuring Crownedyung, saying that he âNeeds his bitch imported/ She falling in love, so Iâve got to abort.â The songs reek of trauma, and they reinforce the cynicism and melancholia that soars across the entire global rapdom, when it comes to talking about relationships.
(Read also: Invisible Currency Is A Refreshing and Punchy Return By Khaligraph Jones )
To an extent, Nasty C seems to adore the pimp lifestyle, so much that anyone interested in a romantic love experience should not bother looking to him for inspiration. In the eight song featuring Domani, âLetâs Go,â he continues this masculine idiosyncrasy, rapping about how heâs âImitating porn scenes/ Gripping on waists and spanking,â and how his girls âDonât even know Iâm not chasing.â Itâs the classic fuckboy anthem, with the high adrenaline rush of trap music battery-powering the vibe.
Yet, from the last song, âStalling,â the truth comes to the fore, as Nasty C goes on a mid-tempo sober bop, that indicates he is deeply hurt by a failed relationship, but too proud to admit it. âYou can just leave, if you wanna leave/ If you donât wanna go the whole way/ Then goodbye goodbye/ Youâre fucking up a good thing/ I wonât come back, Iâm sorry/ Iâmma finish what you started,â he says. For admitting that the relationship, or at least the idea of it, was a âgood thing,â it is glaring that the project reflects his unfinished healing process, with him still being in the stage of anger and denial. Itâs a deeply intimate narrative that he charts with his camouflaged bad-boy themes. And it is, perhaps, the cheekiest, yet most admirable part of this tape, the rawness that unfurls within his emotions, and the mirror of masculine stereotypes of ânever admitting their heartbreaksâ that still exist quietly. It is also the only song on the tape where he sings, sprinkling some Tory Lanez-esque energy to climax the record.
Still, Ivyson Army Tour is not only an emotional rollercoaster on Nasty Câs love life. The other half of the record is his pensive and inspirational tour across his lifeâs struggles and inspirations. On the Emtee-assisted âBorn to Win,â he sings about the celebrity life and the never-die urge to succeed. âFirst we will fail and then we get back up on/ Cause we never was born to quit/ You wonât prevail from sittinâ at home alone/ Time will tell what we end up sittinâ on/ I just hope all my niggas get rich,â he raps. In the Case-Klowzed-assisted track, âExtravagant,â he talks about his dreams of living the 5-star life. âI wanna live an extravagant life/ Extravagant kid, extravagant wife/ Mindinâ my business and handle it right/ Iâm going crazy, Iâm trampling light/ Get into the ring and I turn into Mike/ Get on the mic and I turn into Mike.â
He reminisces on his early adolescent struggles, especially on leaving home, in the Cassper Nyovest-assisted âLoco,â as he raps, âI said the minute that I realised I was in a pickle and life was too pickle/ I had to leave home, I didnât wait for my dismissal/ Bitter-sweet moment, me and Pop had some issues,â and on losing his friends, âGlowed my wrist up/ Then friends start to switch up, of course they did/ I just never knew that it would hurt like this.â And in âCanât Imagine,â he goes on a Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar style ego rant, rapping about being âIn the league where you niggas never existed at all/ When I feel unsatisfied with the game, I refurbish it.â Across the tape, he showcases himself as the typical Alpha male, with zero emotional attachments, and 100 percent focus on his career and sources of income.
In his earlier bodies of work, Bad Hair , and Strings and Blings , he similarly underlines his themes with personal experiences, using his life experiences such as having bad hair, or his induction into the life of fame and glitz, as metaphors for a truck load of traumas, trials and other stories about his life. Every Nasty C record feels like a binocular view into the complex-yet-admirable sojourn that has been his lifeâs journey. Ivyson Army Tour feels like yet another slice of this cake.
As a body of work, the mixtape doesnât disappoint for what mixtapes really are — appetisers. Its rough, monotonic sonic lineup does not really offend the listener, judging from the concept of mixtapes. Its flat arrangement, which flees from the opposite direction that Zulu Man with Some Power or his other serious bodies of work showcased, is not grounds to pick a quarrel with the musician over. The tape is not strong enough for seamless listens, and fans might have to cherry pick their favourite songs rather than listen to the entire record. Perhaps, an EP with fewer songs might have helped Nasty Câs strategy at this point. As fans crave his next album, and gleefully attend his sold-out concerts, it is only befitting that they hold on to something thatâs more than an appetiser; something with a stronger replay value.
(Read Also: Cruel Santinoâs Final Heaven Subaru Boys Is an Exciting Chaotic Puzzle)
Nonetheless, sonically, the collaborations on the tape were uber-impressive. With such a star-studded lineup, the individual duets and trios on the tape feel like a success, with the collaborators each sprinkling their spice, without Nasty C losing his authenticity and presence on the records. Most of them are also his frequent collaborators, especially Tellaman. Nasty Câs chorus style of sung-rapping or Trapping also dominates the tape, giving it a very heightened Hip Hop vibe, which is a gradually diminishing feature on Hip Hop records across Africa at the moment. His cadence and vocalisation also shines through on this record, reaffirming him as one of the best African emcees behind the microphones at this time.
Cohesively, Ivyson Army Tour is a fleeting musical euphoria, snippeting the sort of âhighâ that Nasty Câs intimate records can evoke, while distinguishing itself as a well-written, well vocalised and poorly arranged body of work. While it suffers from being underwhelming, it still shines as a strong buildup to his forthcoming body of work. From Nasty C, expectations are always high. And while it is not met in this mixtape, there is still something to relish in Ivyson Army Tour .
