Culture and customs.

Tanzania’s population is a vibrant mix of religions, races and cultures. Depending on what area you’re traveling in, be prepared to see a variety of cuisines, customs and dress, which directly reflect the diversity of the population.

The island of Zanzibar is predominately Muslim; Maasai are largely found in the North along with other indigenous tribes whose beliefs are largely animist; and Christians, Hindus and other minority groups can be found throughout the country.

Although most Tanzanians may not have many material possessions, travelers can expect a warm welcome and generosity from most locals.

Greeting styles and language differ according to ethnic or tribal group but universally, visitors can expect to receive a warm welcome and a smile from most.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Tanzania

Seafood-lovers will adore the range of fresh seafood on offer in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. From fragrant fish curries to barbecued shrimp and lobster, the waterfront markets and restaurants are full of wonders from the sea.

2. Indian Cuisine

With a significant Indian population, Tanzanian cities have a fair share of Indian restaurants. Whether you’re visiting a budget cafe or more extravagant restaurant, Indian cuisine is generally a good option for vegetarians as there will always be a few meat-free options to choose from.

These sweet, fried breads can be found at markets and street stalls throughout East Africa, and make a delicious, cheap snack. Although they can be flavored differently, the ones made in Zanzibar usually feature fresh spices and coconut.

Geography and environment

Bordered by Burundi, Kenya , Malawi , Mozambique , Rwanda , Uganda , Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania has one of the most diverse natural environments in the world.

While traveling through Tanzania, you’ll be able to see enormous gorges, sprawling savanna, ancient islands, dense woodlands, snow-capped mountain ranges, vast lakes, colonial towns and modern cities.

With the Indian Ocean occupying the eastern side of Tanzania, this country truly does have the best of both worlds. Home to Africa’s highest peak and some of the most famous nature reserves in the world, Tanzania also has eclectic cities and vibrant villages to boast of.

Tanzania’s former capital, Dar es Salaam, is a modern metropolis with a colonial flavor while the regional center of Arusha has retained a village feel.

Zanzibar is in a category of its own with its ancient cobbled streets and unique, heritage-filled buildings.

History and government

Early history.

Home to some of the earliest human remains in the world, the land now known as Tanzania could possibly be one of the first lands to have been inhabited by early humans. Human habitation can be traced back 10,000 years to a time when people lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle before outside influences arrived bringing with them organized agriculture and cattle farming. Visitors to Tanzania should head to Olduvai Gorge (known as the 'Cradle of Mankind') if interested in the early history of Tanzania and, in fact, the world.

Recent history

Europeans only arrived in the 15th century, via the East Coast. Zanzibar was first controlled by the Portuguese, then by Arabian traders interested in easy access to the Indian Ocean that allowed trade with Asia and beyond. This was also a time when the human slave trade was a lucrative business. The island of Zanzibar became a pivotal place for this trade, with more than 100,000 slaves passing through during this period.

Mainland Tanzania came under the influence of German, Belgian and British colonizers in the 1800s, who explored and mapped the interior of the country. German colonizers brought infrastructure, agriculture and Christianity to Tanzania, but faced resistance from many tribes who fought against being forced into labor and desperately wanted to keep their land and preserve their traditional way of life. During World War I, Germany lost the colony to the British, heralding a new era of colonial rule for the region. More recently, Tanzania adopted its constitution in 1977, held its first multi-party election in 1995 and had its first female presidential candidate in 2005.

2. Handicrafts

3. Jewelery

For silver and gold jewelry with Arabic flair, Zanzibar has plenty of unique pieces in the markets, galleries and antique shops of Stone Town.

Festivals and events in Tanzania

Zanzibar’s Stone Town and surrounding areas swell with Swahili music and dance in this vibrant celebration of East African culture. Stay until the last day where the festivities head to the beach and include craft, cuisine and entertainment.

Festival of the Dhow Countries

East Africa’s largest film, music and arts festival takes over Zanzibar each year in July. Film screenings, exhibitions and craft classes offer entertainment during the day, while beach parties are a fun way to interact with locals at night.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania’s climate changes with its diverse landscapes, so expect variances in weather in different parts of the country.

Generally, January and February are the high season for travel in Tanzania as the hot, dry weather is generally considered to be the most pleasant.

The best time to  visit the Serengeti  is late June to October when the animals are most abundant.

Expect afternoon downpours during the wet season (from March to May); however, during this time you’ll find fewer tourists in Tanzania so you won’t have to compete with crowds.

Is tipping customary in Tanzania?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Tanzania but a little generosity will be received positively, especially when considering the low wages that Tanzanian service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change or rounding up the bill at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Tanzania?

Travelers will be able to access the internet quite easily in the internet cafes of Tanzania’s large cities, but limited to no access should be expected in regional and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Tanzania?

Cell phone coverage is good in Tanzania’s large cities and towns, but less so in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your cell phone.

What are the toilets like in Tanzania?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Tanzania, except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels, tourist attractions and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as they are rarely provided.

What will it cost for a…?

Tanzania's unit of currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Street snack = 500-3,000 TZS
  • Bottle of local beer = 2,000-4,000 TZS
  • Plate of food from a local eatery = 3,000 TZS
  • Dinner in an international restaurant = 10,000-20,000 TZS

Can I drink the water in Tanzania?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Tanzania. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Tanzania?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Tanzania?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and urban centers but are rarer in small towns, rural areas and villages. Be sure to have other payment methods available when venturing out of the big cities as ATMs aren't always an option.

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Tanzania directly support our foundation partner, The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) .

The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) provides education, support and advocacy to ensure the fair and ethical treatment of Kilimanjaro Porters. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire (with Materuni waterfalls, coffee tour) - 6 Days

Excellent planning and implementation My husband and I planned and recently completed a 5-day private safari with Serengeti African Tours. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the team members once again. Only with professional help it is possible to plan the right length in the different national parks. Our guide Ombeni was unbelievably great, he was there for us the whole day, told us everything we needed to know about the animals and was simply a likeable and nice person with whom we enjoyed spending the 5 days. THANK YOU, Ombeni for an unforgettable safari! Everything was very professional, from the organization to the handling on site and the implementation. We can highly recommend Serengeti African Tours as a tour provider

Tanzania Camping Adventure Tour

Tanzania Camping Adventure

We had a great time. Mostly the animals were amazing, which Moses and our drivers either found for us or were directed too. While that was mostly out of their control, what was in their control was well done. The food was very well done and varied. Camp was set up for us and spacious. I was a little nervous concerning the lack of protection on the parks but we had no incidents. All in all well done if a bit pricey.

Kilimanjaro climbing machame route 7 days Tour

Kilimanjaro climbing machame route 7 days

Almighty Kilimanjaro are the best company to climb Kilimanjaro with, I genuinely believe that we hit the jackpot with our team from the word go Almighty Kilimanjaro were professional and supportive. The day before the hike they come to meet you, give you a brief and ensure that all of our gear was suitable, this made us feel at ease and ready to go, at this point they also recommend getting a private toilet, I would really recommend, this, there were only 3 of us so we shared one between us. Every day of the climb our guides Muntari and Frankie were incredible, they were so knowledgeable about the mountain and shared loads of interesting information about all of the plants you see on the way but they were also like family and they chatted to us about everything and anything and constantly kept us going and kept spirits high even when some of us were struggling with altitude. Every evening they give nightly briefings, conducting blood oxygen checks, completing health check forms and take a genuine concern for the groups well-being, before giving information on the following days climb. They are remarkable. They even asked the chef to concoct a soothing ginger drink to settle our stomachs. Every meal time Shabani our chef made the most delicious food for us, I was so amazed by the food he could make on the mountain and really think he should start a mountain cook book or a restaurant he's amazing, you get very well fed on the trip! Enjoy it and make sure you try to eat even when your appetite drops, you will need the energy. Apollo was our waiter and we loved him, he woke us up every morning with hot water for teas and coffee and a jolly 'Jambo' gave us hot water to wash ourselves with at the beginning and end of each day and served all of our meals. He was just amazing throughout, he will make an excellent guide one day and we wish him all the best for that. The porters were also outstanding and worked unbelievably hard after carrying so much up the mountain they always set up camp and even came back to find us and help us with our day bags if we needed it and lent a hand to help us over the steep rocks. Frankie and Muntari we owe so much to you, without you we wouldn't have made it to the top, all of our group ended up making it to the summit but all at different times due to altitude issues but we all made it and that was solely down to their knowledge of the mountain and their patience and genuine want for everyone to reach the top. Frankie was with me when I made it to the summit, I was very very emotional on the way up because of the reason for my climb and Frankie was incredibly supportive always giving me a big hug to keep me going when I needed it the most. I cannot thank Frankie enough for helping me to reach my dream and make it to the highest point in Africa. And to Muntari for taking care of my husband, knowing when he needed to turn back and rest and for giving him the opportunity to get up and go again for the summit the following morning. We know that this all must have put alot of additional pressure on the team but they always had constant smiles and an evident passion for their work, nothing was to much trouble. They were a truly uplifting team of people who wanted you all to succeed. To anyone thinking about this adventure, I wholeheartedly recommend it. Train well, respect the mountain, and be mindful of the altitude's effects and most importantly listen to the guides and respect them. They are the true hero's of the mountain. This journey is genuinely a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we are immensely grateful to Almighty Kilimanjaro and their amazing team for making it possible. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. ?️✨ Nicole and Nathaniel

Kilimanjaro: Machame Route Tour

Kilimanjaro: Machame Route

This was an incredibly challenging and rewarding trip. The Intrepid guides were so knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We had a fantastic group with great dynamics, the food was good, the equipment was well looked after, our porters were such hard workers and our guides knew everything there was to know about the mountain and how to best deal with the altitude and looked after us all really well. I highly recommend climbing Kili with Intrepid.

We had a really great experience with spider tours and safaris . Our guides, peter and Daniel, were brilliant and made every effort to ensure we had a great trip. The porters and cook were excellent, we never had to worry about timing or going hungry and experienced a very wide range of delicious meals. Our chef, kiba, also had some decent cobbling skills and stitched some new life into a pair of old boots. The trekking team and off-mountain management all came together as one and it was great to spend 8 days with Tanzanians that appeared to be friends as well as colleagues. We had some mild altitude issues on the summit day, but they were swiftly handled and our guides gave us the determination to carry on!

Kilimanjaro climb lemosho route 8 days Tour

Kilimanjaro climb lemosho route 8 days

Cannot say enough good things about Almighty Kilimanjaro!! I went in Jan of 24 with my sister and some friends and our expectations were blown out of the water! Our guides Frankie, Sole, and Muntari were SO amazing! I would highly highly recommend them as guides to anyone that I know is hiking Kilimanjaro. They were funny, nice, supportive, answered all our questions and made sure that everyone was feeling well mentally, emotionally, physically, and medically! They were so inclusive and helped us gain moral when we were down at points. Even on summit night all the porters carried our bags and sang to us allll the way up. It was incredible, I bet they sang for 3 hours straight. It helped so much to help keep our mind off of what we were doing! Even one of the porters was putting my hands into his jacket to keep them warm while we were hiking! He routinely came over to make sure that my hands were warm enough and that I was doing okay. These people are truly amazing and I don’t think we could’ve made it to the top without them! I’m so glad we took the 8 day lemosho route as well. Hiking kili was my first real hiking experience (bad idea I know) but the 8 day route gave us enough time to acclimate and shorter days of hiking in order to keep spirits up! Everyone in our group did experience some pretty severe altitude sickness in spite of this but all the guides were so helpful on giving us advice on what medicines to take/ what to do in order to make us feel better. They let us sleep in when needed, we took breaks when needed, and they would tell us stories to keep us occupied during the difficult hikes. They seriously were so amazing!! One more piece of advice, please please please rent a private toilet. These were a legit LIFESAVER on our trip. Especially since some of the main symptoms of altitude sickness is GI problems and vomitting. I seriously don’t even want to imagine what that hike would’ve been like without the private toilets- best $50 I’ve ever spent!!

I'm more enjoy climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with spider tours and safaris. Professional and good local company. The meals and drinks during the hiking was good. Serengeti Safari - (PRIVATE TRIP)

My husband and I so enjoyed the Serengeti Safari tour. One of our best trips to date. We have seen documentaries and National Geographic videos on African safaris; however, absolutely nothing compares to actually being there and up close and personal with nature's magnificent creatures. OneSeed created the perfect itinerary. After hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro, this was a perfect extension to our African adventure. I was ready for comfortable lodging, a glass of wine watching the sunset over the plains, and a hot shower. OneSeed delivered once again and exceeded my expectations. Our guide, Saleh, was professional and experienced and knew all the great locations to see the animals in the three national parks we visited over the course of 6 full days. Memorable moment- We all jumped right out of our skins while checking out a buffalo carcass on the dirt road in the Serengeti. A vulture swopped down to enjoy a tasty bite when a lion suddenly lunged out of the bush to protect it's meal just 15 ft in front of us. Wow! I highly recommend OneSeed when planning your African Safari. This is my 4th OneSeed Adventure and I can't speak highly enough about my experiences. I have always felt safe, special, and well taken care of.

8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing - Lemosho Route Tour

8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing - Lemosho Route

The entire process of prepping to completing the hike was so easy! The entire team from Steppe Dogs Adventures was Daines! Frank made sure we were fully prepared and knowledgeable before we ever stepped foot on the mountain. Our guide and his team were always there to answer every question we had along the way. Roman our chief guide and assistant guides and every single porter were completely dedicated to successfully getting our group to the summit, making sure to cater to each person's individual needs along the way. The whole crew would sing and route us on when they saw us struggling and really needed that encouragement. We truly couldn't have asked for a better experience, and made great friends with the whole team! They even hooked us up with a home made traditional meal back in town at the end of our trip. Even with the struggles and minor altitude headaches and nausea, we all want to do it again, some day in the future, but try a different route to really get to know the mountain! Strongly recommend these guys!!

I salute Tanzania for having managing national parks so well. Safari is done in a respectful manner to the environment and the animals. We saw all the animals and their babies. The trip was unforgettable.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Tanzania

I got Covid from someone in the group. For a high altitude hike like this, we should have been tested for Covid. It not like I could avoid it, we ate together in an enclosed tent.
The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.
Incredible adventure and organization. The staff, equipment, accommodation and food was spot on. Just exactly what was needed and wanted! Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, ensures everyone’s needs were accommodated. Perfect trip.

Welcome to Africa's "Garden of Eden"… and the destination that some would say is the land of safaris. Our Tanzania tours will transport you to "the place where life began" where you'll witness the "Big Five" on private game drives in Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro and beyond while enjoying experiences that reveal the essence of East Africa on a small group safari or a family-inspired adventure.

Serengeti Zanzibar Tanzania Safari

  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to Tanzania

Wherever you go in Tanzania, opportunities abound for getting to know the county's people and cultures with once-in-a-lifetime moments.

A picnic lunch in ngorongoro crater, game drives and a picnic in africa's original "garden of eden".

Believed by many to have been Africa's original "Garden of Eden," Ngorongoro Crater ranks among the world's largest calderas, and contains one of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Within this dormant volcano's walls lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake – all of which inspire a continuous parade of migrating wildlife. You'll not only embark on a game drive in this "lost world," but a private picnic lunch inside the crater will be a highlight of your trip.

Meet the Maasai people

Learn the ways of the maasai at a traditional boma.

A highlight of your family's Tanzania safari is your visit to a Maasai boma – a nomadic village preserving traditonal Maasai cultural customs, consisting of small huts made of mud and cow dung for sleeping and cooking. Can you picture living here with your family? During your visit, Maasai villagers will demonstrate their spear-throwing, bow-and-arrow and other traditional skills. You'll also have an opportunity to visit a local primary school to talk with the children and their teacher.

Stories almost as old as the Earth itself await you in Tanzania

Gliding in a hot air balloon high above the vast plains of the Serengeti, observing the "circle of life" below… a picnic lunch in the wildlife treasure-trove that is Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera that some believe may have been the "Garden of Eden"… a visit to Oldupai Gorge, home to some of the earliest evidence of humans on Earth… Tauck experiences revealing the essence of Tanzania…

Follow the migration in a mobile camp

Our first moving safari's mobile camp follows migrating wildlife.

Every year, over a million wildebeest and more than 200,000 zebras make a trek across Tanzania from the southern reaches of Serengeti National Park to the Masai Mara National Reserve and back again, instinctively driven to constantly search for food and water. On Tauck's first "moving safari," follow this "Great Migration" with a three-night stay in tented accommodations at Legendary Serengeti Mobile Camp – moving with the wildlife as they traverse the heart of Serengeti National Park, and heading out on game drives each morning and afternoon.

Private game drives throughout your trip

Set off on private game drives on specially built safari vehicles.

Hop aboard your specially built safari vehicle and make tracks on a daily game drive (or two) across the classic African savannah stretching out before you... in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, and in Kenya's Amboseli National Park and Masai Mara Reserve. Guiding you on your treks in search of the "Big Five" and other iconic wildlife are our expert drivers, trackers, rangers, and Tauck Directors... all highly experienced and eager to share their knowledge while keeping everyone engaged, safe and sound on the adventure of a lifetime!

"My husband and I had an incredible safari experience with Tauck. Every detail was attended to and the trip was a total success. The hotels and food were superb. The itinerary was perfect, and we saw hundreds and thousands of amazing and gorgeous animals. The safari guides as well as our tour director were terrific and very knowledgeable about the animals and surroundings. This trip will live in our memories forever." Peggy B., Houston, TX

Small group safari Tanzania feedback

A very efficient and friendly service provided by Arno – the booking process was seamless. All information provided was very clear and helpful. The itinerary was a good mix and staying in Serengeti for two nights made for a more relaxing trip. The lenght of tour for us was ideal. We believe the trip was well priced for the overall package.

ON TANZANIA'S FAMOUS NORTHERN SAFARI CIRCUIT - THE CLASSIC SAFARI DESTINATIONS

On Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, you can discover the Big Five, incredible landscapes and stay at personal camps and lodges. Classic safari destinations await you: From the plains of the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater and the Tarangire National Park, dotted with Baobab trees and home to many elephants. Thanks to our sister company in Kenya, we offer small group safaris as crossing-border trips to Kenya as well.

The most popular time to experience a Tanzanian safari is during the dry season from June to October. Temperatures are pleasant, humidity levels are low, and the chance of rain is minimal. It is the perfect season to witness how vast numbers of prey congregate near rivers and water holes, which encourages predators to base themselves in these areas. However, it is also a busy time on the Northern Circuit. For a more intimate experience with fewer tourists and vehicles around, we recommend travelling during the low and shoulder season months.

Baobab during the dry season

June to late October & December to February Best time for wildlife sightings; book early

Tanzania experiences a long dry season from June until the end of October and a shorter dry period from January to February. Both are superb times to travel to Tanzania as all the national parks will be easily accessible. Not only are they the best time for a safari, but thanks to the dry weather these two periods are also a great time to experience a tropical beach retreat on the Zanzibar Archipelago. Since it is the most popular time to visit Tanzania, expect to see more safari vehicles in the popular parks on the Northern Circuit.

Green season in Tarangire National Park

Rainy Season

April, May, November Ideal to see a lusciously green Tanzania and fewer other visitors

This is the season when the landscapes turn green, the sky is clear, and the light is incredible. It occurs thanks to two rainy seasons. The long rains arrive from March to May and the short rains, which are less predictable, happen in November and December. Despite the afternoon thunderstorms, it is a great time to visit Tanzania, because the northern parks remain accessible, the landscapes are incredibly beautiful and there are fewer visitors.

GREAT EXPERIENCES AT A SMALLER PRICE

Our intimate group safaris offer nature lovers, both young and old, the opportunity to experience an authentic safari with like-minded people at a very competitive price. If you want to find out more, browse our small group safaris in Tanzania below.

EXPERIENCE TANZANIAN HOSPITALITY AT SMALL AND PERSONAL LODGES AND CAMPS

We understand the difference between the feeling you receive from a warm welcome at a small intimate lodge or a beautiful camp, compared to the empty and anonymous feeling that you get from staying in an enormous hotel. This is what makes our group safaris different and special. Not only are group sizes small, but just as importantly, you will be welcomed to a selection of small and intimate lodges and camps. Every part of a safari is an experience to savour. On our small group safaris, you will be welcomed as a guest, not just a room number.

What to expect on a small group safari in Tanzania

Advantages of a small group tour.

Rather than feel like a mass market tourist, we want you to feel like an individual traveller. From the point of your enquiry to the end of your safari, our goal is for you to experience this ethos.

We understand the importance of disconnecting from the fast-paced world of urban living, to experience nature in an authentic way. We created our small group safaris so that you can experience a Tanzanian safari with all of your senses.

We achieve this by limiting the size of our groups to seven people. But did you know that if only two travellers book a group tour, that safari will still go ahead? Plus, our guides are not only knowledgeable but skilled in allowing each guest to get the most out of their safari. Best of all you get to share the cost of this intimate experience with your travel companions and travel at a fantastic price – getting back much more in return than you ever imagined.

How to plan a group safari in Tanzania

Planning a small group safari to Tanzania is quite simple and straightforward.

We have designed and planned several itineraries to the most popular highlights and some hidden gems for you to choose from.

Group safaris start and finish on specific dates. Each day is planned out, but with the flexibility to choose some of your activities and how to spend parts of the day.

Travelling with a guide has countless advantages. They are your window to a whole new world and will share their abundant local knowledge about wildlife, plants, and local life with you. Travelling with a guide means handing over all responsibility – you know you will get to the right accommodation, at the right time. Your guide will be a constant source of information and you are likely to part as friends.

Stay safe and comfortable in our custom-designed 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers. Whilst watching wildlife make use of the roof-hatch and guaranteed window seat from where you can achieve excellent photos.

Arrive at small lodges and camps to enjoy exceptional Tanzanian hospitality, great food and a private room with all home comforts.

If you want to learn more, read through our itineraries, or contact one of our country experts who can help you with any query that you may have.

What do you see on small group safaris in Tanzania?

Tanzanian safaris transpire on three circuits. The more remote Southern and Western Circuits, where you can see incredible wildlife numbers on private safaris . And the popular Northern Circuit, which is home to some of Tanzania’s most spectacular national parks. Due to the close proximity of northern parks, our group safaris explore this area. To see the southern and western national parks, book a private trip.

The Northern Circuit has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One is the vast Serengeti National Park, home to stunning and diverse wildlife all year-round; and the second is the incredible Ngorongoro Crater, a spectacular inactive volcano. Other protected areas include Tarangire National Park, an elephant lover’s paradise; and Lake Natron, a soda lake that turns pink in the dry season and hosts ~2.5 million breeding flamingos.

Those hoping to make it to the top of Africa’s highest mountain could consider one of our group treks up Mount Kilimanjaro .

All these parks are accessed from Arusha’s Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will be collected and driven to your first destination.

12 of the best things to do in Tanzania

Jabulile Ngwenya

Nov 16, 2023 • 7 min read

Experience the best of Tanzania with these top things to do © Roberto Moiola / Sysaworld / Getty Images

Many know the East African country of Tanzania  for the Great Migration at Serengeti National Park , but there's so much history and wilderness to explore within this diverse region.

Around the country there are several national parks , home to the largest concentration of wildlife in Africa. On the coast are some of the world’s most riveting islands and warm waters, and under those waters is a world of oceanic wonder, filled with colors and depth. In the cities, the buildings tell stories of battles and conquest, depression and victory. You’ll need a lifetime to explore it all, but as you start your journey, here is our list of top things to do in Tanzania.

1. Go diving and snorkeling in Zanzibar

Zanzibar is Africa’s paradise, with warm sky-blue waters gently lapping shores of fine white sand that stretch for miles – the stuff dreams are made of. But wait until you explore what lies beneath. Schools of colorful fish, frolicking bottlenose and spinner dolphins and majestic whale sharks deftly glide in and around the captivating, kaleidoscopic coral reef.

Planning tip:  The waters around Mnemba Island and Kizimkazi Beach are the best places on the archipelago for aquatic adventures, although any of the numerous beaches offer wonderful opportunities.

Hot-air balloons at sunrise over a vast grassy plain

2. See the Serengeti from a hot-air balloon

Very little on earth speaks magic like surveying the endless plains of the Serengeti . The Maasai people have called this region home for centuries, and they have lived side by side with an extraordinary array of fauna and flora unlike anything else in the world.

At dawn, when the hot-air balloon is fired up, the sun surfaces slowly into view and the balloon rises to greet the color-streaked clouds. Below, thousands of antelope, warthogs, zebras, lions, rhinos and elephants wander about as they start their day.

Planning tip:  The Great Migration takes place from May to September, and this might just be the perfect place to watch it.

3. Summit Mt Kilimanjaro

Mt Kilimanjaro is Africa’s tallest mountain and a thirst trap for adventure junkies. There’s truly nothing more exciting than making your summit at Uhuru Peak ( uhuru means "freedom" in KiSwahili), which stands at 5895m (19,341ft) on Kibo’s crater rim.

Planning tips:  The average summit duration is five days, although some routes may take a few days longer depending on terrain, foot traffic and stops to take in the scenery. There are approximately eight possible routes to Uhuru Peak, Marangu and Rongai being the easier ones. Machame, Shira and Lemosho have proved to be more difficult, but there’s very little else that shouts victory quite like planting your feet on Africa’s highest point.

4. Spend the night in an underwater room off the coast of Pemba

The Manta Resort's Underwater Room is a wooden structure anchored on the Indian Ocean floor, just off the coast of Pemba  island. In the midst of calm cerulean waters, this edifice almost appears lonely as it seems to float at its own whim. But rest assured all is secure.

On the deck, you can catch the kisses of the sun by day and at night gaze into the eyes of a million stars.  When you’re ready, take the stairs down to a small modern underwater bedroom surrounded by glass walls, in which you'll meet the majesty of the ocean. You'll pay for the privilege, but it's thrilling just thinking about what awaits as you sleep each night.

People gathered in front of the Rock, a restaurant built on the cliff in the sea by Pingwe Beach in Zanzibar

5. Enjoy a meal at the Rock in Zanzibar

The Rock is a quaint restaurant built upon a bed of stone on the ocean floor on Michamvi's Pingwe Beach, Zanzibar. In low tide, you can walk up the stairs and into this small boutique of incredible flavors and aromas, but during high tide it becomes its own island, and a boat must bring you to its doors – hence its nickname, Tidal Island.

The Rock experience more than satiates your physical appetite, it elevates it. While European-inspired, everything on the menu is a fusion of local ingredients (seafood, fruit and vegetables) and sultry spices – the perfect mixture of Asian and African influences. The grilled lobster served with scarab potatoes and salad is heaven’s gift to mere mortals.

6. Swim with whale sharks on Mafia Island

Mafia Island, also known as Whale Shark Island, is Tanzania’s best-kept secret. Like Zanzibar, it's an archipelago, but it has little of the traffic that flows to Unguja Island. The experience of swimming through the coral amidst smaller fish while watching the world’s biggest fish is one you’ll cherish – although enormous, they’re faster than you think.

Planning tip:  Whale Shark Island welcomes these gentle giants from October to March.

7. Eat your heart out at Forodhani Night Market in Zanzibar

Each day as the sun sets over the Forodhani Gardens , the frenetic pace of everyday life on Zanzibar decelerates. In its place, chefs in white jackets and top hats set up stalls to create a medley of Tanzania’s finest street food.

The tables are laden with falafel, cutlets of tandoori chicken, nyama choma (roasted meat), sizzling skewers of octopus, fish and other seafood, spicy samosas and coconut bread. Try the Zanzibar pizza, which is really an omelet of fried eggs, dough and diced veggies. Wash it down with cool sugarcane juice.

A group hiking down from the top of Ol Doinyo Lengai into the green Rift Valley. In the background the escarpment of the Rift Valley is visible. In the foreground there is some volcanic smoke coming out of a crack.

8. Climb Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano

Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano located on a continental rift zone in the Arusha region of Tanzania. Over the last century, there have been 16 eruptions with ongoing thermal activity. Geologists stay fascinated with this volcano because it emits the coldest black lava on the planet (510°C/950°F), which forms a white rock when cooled. The views from the crater rim are breathtaking: on clear days, you can see Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru and the Serengeti.

Planning tip: Beware of the incredibly steep ascent, which takes about six hours to complete: several avid mountaineers have climbed this mountain, and a few didn't finish it.

9. Explore the history of enslavement at the Slave Market Exhibit in Zanzibar

From 1698 until 1897, Zanzibar was home to one of the world’s most notorious markets for trading enslaved people. Tippu Tip was this region’s most scandalous and wealthiest of these traders, and his house is now a museum open to the public.

The Slave Market Exhibit begins with a journey to a sculpture of chained enslaved people – using the original chains – created by Clara Sörnäs, with help from students at  Bagamoyo College . In 1873, after the abolition of the trade of enslaved people, missionaries built the Anglican Cathedral over the original market. Today you can explore two of the 15 dark, dank, cramped chambers that housed enslaved people underground.

10. Indulge in a luxe stay on Thanda Island

If you have money to burn, then make your stay off the Indian Ocean coast a luxurious one. Thanda is a private island dedicated to the conservation of marine life, where you can swim with whale sharks, go deep-sea fishing or dive in the largest protected marine reserve on the Indian Ocean.

Planning tip:  Going all out? For several thousand dollars more, there's a private helicopter to take you to the reserve, as well as a luxurious yacht for idyllic ocean delights.

A group of Hadzabe men sitting around the fire with bows and arrows

11. Spend a day with the Hadzabe people

Tanzania is home to more than 100 ethnic groups who offer cultural tours, including the widely known Maasai in the northern highlands, the Chagga in the Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru regions and the Hehe people of Iringa, in southern Tanzania . The Hadzabe people live on the coast of Lake Eyasi, and are one of the last hunter-gatherer peoples of Africa, not unlike the San of Southern Africa (although no known connection exists).

Planning tip:  A cultural tour with the Hadzabe people can be booked locally through accommodation providers. It includes joining them on a game hunt, a frenzied yet rewarding activity in which the men go in search of bushmeat and the women gather roots and berries. A day offers nonvoyeuristic insights into daily life, rituals, beliefs and ceremonies.

12. Go back in time at the Olduvai Museum

Two million years ago in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area , some of the first human ancestors called this region home. After paleoanthropologist Mary Leakey’s discovery of hominid fossils captured international news in 1959, it became known to the wider world as well.

On the fringe of Olduvai Gorge,  Olduvai Museum holds telltale remains of early life in East Africa, as well as outlining the area's history. Go on a journey filled with awe and wonder, and don't miss the chance to see hominid footprints at least 1.6 million years old.

One of the most popular activities in Tanzania by far is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro , Africa’s highest mountain. Tanzania - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

If you plan a holiday to Tanzania, make sure to visit the beaches in Zanzibar

Friendly people and a beautiful culture are what makes holidays in Tanzania unique. Tanzania is most famous for Serengeti National Park , one of the best wildlife destinations on the planet. The park is home to those big game animals and is the perfect place for a safari. The wildlife and national parks of Tanzania steal away all the limelight, but the country’s beaches are also known to be equally magical. Tanzania is surrounded by islands that offer sleepy villages steeped in centuries-old culture and Swahili traditions and the powdery beaches that simply blow you away. Mount Kilimanjaro , another highlight of Tanzania, can be conquered by the most inexperienced hikers as well, as long as you carefully acclimatize as you ascend, and have the willpower to summit. A trip to Tanzania would be incomplete without visiting the markets and mosques of Stone Town in Zanzibar.

Travel Highlights

  • Get a bird’s eye view from the peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
  • Experience the Serengeti and see the variety of wildlife it has to offer.
  • Learn about the variety of primate in the Mahale Mountains National Park.
  • Soak up the sun on the Eastern coast of Africa at Unguja, Nugwi, or Matemwe Beaches.
  • Swim with the fishes at Mafia Island, or get an in depth olfactory experience in the Spice Islands.
  • Take in Zanzibar and its mélange of Middle Eastern, African, and Indian cultures

Travel Tips

  • Plan time to see the country; it is vast and takes time to experience.
  • Be on the lookout for creatures that are native to Tanzania, like the Kilimanjaro Shrew, or the Highland Rain Frog.
  • Take the train; many places can be reached by railway.
  • Read up before you go; there is plenty of literature on Tanzania.
  • Pack light; travel is a little more complicated there, so make sure you pack for it.
  • Don’t stick to just the tourist attractions; there is a lot to see that might be a little off the beaten path, like visiting the Underwater Room at the Manta Resort.
  • Keep in mind that the more remote you are, the spottier your reception will be. You won’t be cut off completely, but it will be harder to get a connection.

Tanzania has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Tanzania before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Tanzania, do check out our Tanzania Travel Guide for more information.

Why Travel Solo To Tanzania?

Tanzania is a place of pure magic and the iconic Big 5. Now, which adventure to choose?

On  Wild Tanzania  you’ll get to experience what we often call the ‘ultimate’ safari experience. Think glamping atop one-of-a-kind converted Land Rovers in the heart of the Serengeti, featuring your own private chef and unparalleled access to wildlife and the great wildebeest migration. And then there’s  Tanzania: Kili to Crater . This one’s for you if you want a deeper cultural experience and a 360 view of the country beyond it’s wildlife. Yes, there’ll still be plenty of time for epic safaris (we’d never let you visit without one), but you’ll also get to hike a portion of Mt. Kilimanjaro, interact with local tribes and picnic on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater in view of the local hippos. Luckily, on both adventures, you’ll finish off on the pristine isle of Zanzibar.

Whichever adventure you choose, travel to Tanzania and your life-long love affair with Africa will officially begin. We know ours has.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Highlights : A snowcapped mountain in the tropics, six-day hiking trips to the top

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak (5,895 m) and Tanzania's most iconic image.

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, unlike other parks in northern Tanzania, is not visited for the wildlife but for the chance to stand in awe of this beautiful snow-capped mountain and, for many, to climb to the summit. Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed at any time, although the best period is from late June to October, during the dry season.

Kilimanjaro, a World Heritage Site, was formed over 1 million years ago by volcanic movement along the Rift Valley. Three volcanic cones — Shira, Kibo, and Mawenzi — came to be about 750,000 years ago. The highest point is Uhuru Peak on Kibo, which is one of the Seven Summits of the world .

The mountain rises from farmland on the lower level to rainforest and alpine meadow, and then barren lunar landscape at the peaks. The slopes of rainforest are home to buffaloes, leopards, monkeys, elephants, and eland. The alpine zone is where bird watchers will find an abundance of birds of prey.

Although no immediate project is in the works, in late 2020 the government approved a plan to build a cable car on Mt. Kilimanjaro. If constructed, it would take visitors to 3,700 meters above sea level.

Serengeti National Park

Highlights : Big Five wildlife spotting, wildebeest migration, 500 species of birds, UNESCO World Heritage Site

The world-famous Serengeti National Park is a vast treeless plain with millions of animals living here or passing through in search of fresh grasslands. It's most famous for the annual wildebeest migration but you can also see the Big Five here, and nearly 500 species of birds have been recorded on the Serengeti.

As the second largest national park in Tanzania , the Serengeti attracts tens of thousands of tourists each year. The best months for wildlife viewing in Serengeti National Park are between June and September . The wet season is from March to May, with the coldest period from June to October.

The annual migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle takes place in May or early June. This migration is one of the most impressive natural events and the primary draw for many tourists.

Zanzibar Beaches

Highlights : Stunning white-sand beaches, warm water, historic Stone Town

The island of Zanzibar, also called Unguja, is a major holiday destination in Tanzania and is known for its beautiful beaches.

Part of the Zanzibar archipelago, which consists of the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, this island has some of the best beaches in the world. The surf varies depending on what side of the island you are on, but visitors will find soft white sand and clear shallow water, along with traditional boats lining the shore.

The island has some spectacular accommodation options, with pools, luxury suites, and fine dining. One of the best is the new Emerald Zanzibar Resort & Spa on Muyuni Beach in Matemwe with 250 suites, four restaurants, its own beach, protected reef, and spectacular pool area.

The historic city of Stone Town, known for old Arabian townhouses, narrow alleyways, and a busy port, is located in the heart of Zanzibar.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Highlights : Incredible numbers of animals in a stunning natural environment, Olduvai Gorge

Located between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is home to the famous volcanic Ngorongoro Crater and is one of Tanzania's most popular wildlife viewing areas. This huge volcanic crater has a permanent supply of water, which draws thousands of animals who stay in this area rather than migrating.

Visitors come here primarily for viewing large animals and bird watching. Thousands of animals can be seen on the crater floor, including lions, elephants, rhinos, Thomson's gazelles, and buffaloes, but wildebeests and zebras account for over half of the animals that call the Ngorongoro Crater home.

Bird watching is superb, especially around Lake Migadi , which attracts flocks of flamingoes to the shallows. Hippos are content to submerge themselves during the day and then graze in the nearby grass in the evening.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact ancient caldera in the world, nearly three million years old. The Ngorongoro volcano was one of the world's tallest mountains before it exploded and collapsed.

Olduvai Gorge

Olduvai Gorge

Also of interest in the conservation area is the Olduvai Gorge. This important archeological site has revealed ancient skull and bone fragments that have delivered critical information about early mankind.

The Olduvai Gorge is an archeological site situated on a series of fault lines, where centuries of erosion have revealed fossils and remnants of early mankind. As early as 1911, a German professor found some fossil bones while looking for butterflies in Olduvai Gorge.

In a later expedition, the Leakeys collected skull fragments, a skull, and bones determined to be approximately 2 million years old. Tools and hunting weapons from 1 to 1.5 million years ago were also discovered in Olduvai Gorge.

Another exciting find were the famous footprints of a man, woman, and child at Laetoli, near Olduvai . These and other discoveries provide more evidence to the theory that at least three hominid species were in this region over two million years ago.

Lake Manyara National Park

Highlights : Thousands of flamingos, baboons, elephants, giraffes, canoeing

The spectacular Lake Manyara National Park is comprised of forest, woodland, grasslands, and swamps. Two-thirds of the park is covered by water and Lake Manyara is host to thousands of flamingoes, at certain times of year, as well as other diverse bird life.

The highlight of Lake Manyara Park is the large population of elephants, tree-climbing lions, and hippos, which can be observed at a much closer range than in other parks. This park is also home to the largest concentration of baboons in the world .

Wildlife drives, canoeing (when water levels are high enough), mountain bike tours and bird watching are the most popular things to do in Lake Manyara National Park.

Mafia Island

Highlights : Incredible reefs, 400 species of fish, offshore fishing for gamefish

Mafia Island draws divers and snorkelers from around the world to the undersea world protected by the Mafia Island Marine Park. The best months for diving are October to March but the best weather on Mafia Island is May to October. March and April are months of heavy rain.

The gorgeous Mafia Island Marine Park has coral gardens, an abundant variety of fish, and a relaxed diving atmosphere. Countless birds and over 400 species of fish can be seen in the area. Mafia Island is also a traditional breeding site for the green turtle, which is unfortunately endangered.

Mafia is also a desirable location for deep-sea fishing , especially tuna, marlin, sailfish and other big-game fish.

This island paradise first saw settlers in the 8th or 9th C, but Mafia became a more important settlement during the 12th to 14th C when it held a key position in the East African trading routes.

Tarangire National Park

Highlights : Giant baobab trees, rivers, large elephant population, 300 species of birds

Tarangire National Park , established in 1970, is a fantastic area for wildlife viewing. It is best visited in the dry season from July to September when the animals gather along the river.

During the dry season, Tarangire National Park has one of the highest concentrations of migratory wildlife . Wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the lagoons. The park is also known for its large population of elephants , and the baobab trees that dot the grassy landscape.

The park is excellent for birdwatching , with more than 300 species recorded in Tarangire. These species include buzzards, vultures, herons, storks, kites, falcons and eagles.

Pemba Island

Highlights : Amazing scuba diving, mountain biking, white sand beaches, warm shallow water

Pemba Island is the northernmost island in the Zanzibar archipelago. Around Pemba are many desert islands and some of the best scuba diving in the Indian Ocean , with visibility that is unparalleled. Coral gardens, colorful sponges and sea fans are all found in the underwater haven. The city of Chake Chake , the main population center of Pemba, is a popular base for scuba divers.

Pemba is less visited than Zanzibar and as a result has a more laidback atmosphere. The island is hilly with deep valleys and it has become popular with mountain bikers who are drawn to the 1,000-meter peaks. Just offshore, one spot not to miss is Misali Island Beach. This incredible white-sand beach is on an uninhabited tropical island.

Pemba is a major world clove producer and is also well known for the juju traditions of medicine and magic. People come from throughout East Africa to learn from the voodoo and traditional healers or seek a cure.

Stone Town

Highlights : Historical 19th-century homes and buildings, winding alleys, ornate doors, UNESCO World Heritage site

Stone Town is the cultural heart of Zanzibar and little has changed in the last 200 years. The grand old Arabian homes lining the narrow streets and winding alleys give the city its own unique charm.

The majority of homes in Stone Town were built in the 19th C when Zanzibar was one of the most important Swahili trading towns in the Indian Ocean. Visitors will notice the bras-studded, intricately carved wooden doors on many of the houses.

As the world's oldest functioning Swahili city , many of the landmarks in Stone Town have been restored to their original glory. Some of the historic buildings are now museums and tourist attractions. The town also has a couple of interesting old churches of historical significance.

A walk along Creek Road takes visitors to the original Stone Town area and the location of the Darajani Market , Beit el-Amani , City Hall , and the Anglican Cathedral .

Some of the other key highlights include the Forodhani Gardens , the Old Dispensary with its carved wooden balconies, the former home of the sultans known as Beit el-Sahel or the People's Palace , the Hamamni Persian Baths built in 1888, and the oldest structure in Stone Town, the Old Fort .

Selous Game Reserve

Highlights : Rufiji River, 350 species of birds, impressive numbers of hippos

Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa . Established in 1922, it covers 5% of Tanzania's total area. The southern area is a forbidden zone that is undeveloped, heavily forested, and contains a series of steep cliffs.

Travelers are limited to the area north of the Rufiji River. This area of the Selous Game Reserve has large open grassland, woodlands, rivers, hills and plains. The best time to visit is July through October .

The Rufiji River bisects the Selous Game Reserve and has the largest catchment area of any river in East Africa. The river is an important feature of the reserve providing the opportunity to watch the diverse water-based wildlife.

A broad range of wildlife can be found including elephants, hippos, and rhinos as well as buffalo, antelope, giraffe, warthog, wildebeest, lion, leopard, and cheetah. The diversity of bird life in Selous includes over 350 recorded species.

Arusha National Park

Highlights : Multiple climatic zones, climbing opportunities on Mount Meru, Colobus monkeys

Arusha National Park , although smaller than most in Tanzania, has a range of habitats that consist of the forest of Mount Meru, Ngurdoto Crater in the southeast section of the park, and Momella Lakes, a series of seven crater lakes.

Black and white Colobus monkeys are easily spotted in the forested area while the marshy floor of the crater is dotted with herds of buffalo, zebra, and warthog. Momella Lakes is home to a large selection of resident and migrant waterbirds. People come here to see wildlife and also to climb Mount Meru .

Mount Meru is one of the most beautiful volcanoes in Africa and the second-highest mountain in Tanzania . The summit is reached by a narrow ridge, which provides stunning views of the volcanic cone lying several thousand feet below in the crater. The ascent is steep but the route passes through parkland, forest, a giant heather zone and moorland.

Ruaha National Park

Highlights : Remote and pristine, high concentration of elephants, the Great Ruaha River

Ruaha National Park is Tanzania's largest park , home to large herds of buffalo and gazelle, and has one of the largest concentrations of elephants in Tanzania .

The Great Ruaha River is the main feature of Ruaha National Park, providing magnificent wildlife viewing on the banks. The river also provides much of the electricity to Tanzania through a hydroelectric dam at Kidatu.

Ruaha National Park is the least accessible park in Tanzania and as a result, the landscape remains relatively untouched. Birdwatchers can enjoy over 400 species of birds that are not found in northern Tanzania, and the river, spectacular gorges, and majestic trees are especially appealing to photographers.

Gombe Stream National Park

Highlights : The best place to see chimpanzees in Tanzania, hiking, waterfalls

Gombe National Park, also sometimes called Gombe Stream National Park , is primarily for those who want to get a little off the beaten track and see chimpanzees .

This is one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania and is famous for the work of Jane Goodall . This British researcher arrived in 1960 to study wild chimpanzees and her work turned into what would become the longest-running behavioral research program of its kind in the world.

Guided walks take visitors into the forest to observe chimps in the wild. Many species of primates and mammals live in the park. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in the tropical forest, including barbets, starlings, sunbirds, crowned eagles, kingfishers and the palm-nut vulture.

Hiking and swimming are other popular activities; a trail leads into the forest to a waterfall in the valley.

Katavi National Park

Highlights : High concentration of hippos, crocodiles, and wading birds; Katuma River

Katavi National Park is located in a remote region offering unspoiled wilderness. A predominant feature in Katavi is the enormous flood plain, split by the Katuma River and several seasonal lakes.

The lakes support enormous groups of hippos, crocodiles, and over 400 species of birds . One of the spectacles in Katavi is the hippos at the end of the dry season, when as many as 200 try to squeeze into a pool of water. The male rivalry heats up causing territorial fights.

The dry season brings Katavi National Park to life, herds of impala, reedbuck, lions, zebras and giraffes can be seen at the remaining pools and streams. Thousands of elephants and buffaloes also converge on the park when the flood waters retreat.

Lake Victoria

Highlights : Offshore islands are wildlife sanctuaries

Lake Victoria is the largest freshwater lake in Africa and is bordered by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

This lake is the source of the White Nile and provides an income for millions of residents along its shores. The Tanzanian section of Lake Victoria is one of the least visited regions in the country, however the towns of Bukoba, Musoma and Mwanza have a number of tourist attractions.

Near Mwanza and Musoma are many islands, some have become wildlife sanctuaries. Bird watching and fishing trips are popular excursions, and boat trips or hikes can be arranged around Lake Victoria.

Rubondo Island National Park, which includes several other smaller islands, is on the southwest shores of Lake Victoria.

The best time to take a safari in Tanzania depends on the park you are visiting. For Tarangire National Park and the Selous Game Reserve, July through October is the best time to visit. If you are heading to Katavi National Park, plan for August through October. Serengeti National Park sees most of its visitors from June through September, although the high concentration of animals year-round makes any time good. That said, most people don't visit in the rainy season of March and April.

The best beaches in Tanzania are located on the island of Zanzibar, where you'll find impossibly white sands lapped by turquoise waters. Some of the top beaches include Nungwi Beach; Kendwa Beach; and Paje Beach, one of the top kiteboarding beaches on the island. Other notable runners-up are located on Pemba Island (Misali Island beach), and on Mafia Island (Utende Beach).
