Review Roundup: HAMILTON's Touring 'Angelica' Company Returns to the Stage!

The Angelica company of the National Tour of Hamilton officially returned last month, kicking off at ASU Gammage.

pixeltracker

The musical stars Edred Utomi as Alexander Hamilton, alongside Josh Tower as Aaron Burr, Zoe Jensen as Eliza Hamilton, Bryson Bruce as Marquis de Lafayette/ Thomas Jefferson , Jon Viktor Corpuz as John Laurens/ Philip Hamilton , Tyler Belo as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, Peter Matthew Smith as King George III, Paul Oakley Stovall as George Washington, Stephanie Umoh as Angelica Schuyler, and Olivia Puckett as Peggy Schuyler.

HAMILTON is the story of America's Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation's first Treasury Secretary. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway, Hamilton is the story of America then, as told by America now.

Let's see what the critics are saying...

ASU Gammage - Phoenix, AZ

Seth Tucker , BroadwayWorld : As Hamilton, Edred Utomi 's performance -- for better or worse -- is a near carbon copy of Miranda's Tony nominated performance. For all the die-hard fans hoping to hear a recreation of the cast album, you won't be disappointed. Nobody can match the smooth voice of Leslie Odom Jr.'s Tony winning performance as Aaron Burr, but Josh Tower holds his own with an intense portrayal of the complicated villain. The ensemble truly is the glue that binds the show, with intricate movement and focused emotion, bringing nearly every scene to life.

Moran Theatre - Jacksonville, FL

Charlie Patton, Jacksonville.com : The cast that has come to Jacksonville is outstanding, full of actors who have performed on Broadway and have significant television credits. I particularly liked Warren Egypt Franklin who plays two roles, Lafayette in act one and Thomas Jefferson in act two. Both are great roles, especially Jefferson, and both are well played. Providing rich comic relief is Neil Haskell , who plays an ultimately puzzled King George (puzzled that leaders could just step down; puzzled that John Adams would be allowed to assume Washington's crown).

Marcus Center - Milwaukee, WI

Jim Higgins, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel : As the diminutive John Laurens and as young Philip Hamilton , Jon Viktor Corpuz is a captivating fireball who draws attention. As Washington, Stovall is a commander in chief great in both stature and gravitas. I'd cross the Delaware for this guy. Jensen and Umoh sing Eliza and Angelica's heartbreaking solos with conviction. And King George ( Peter Matthew Smith ) must be the most popular villain since Darth Vader, judging from the audience's delirium each time he sashayed onstage.

Harry Cherkinian, Shepherd Express: If ever there was a show that truly represents an excellent ensemble performance it's Hamilton. But the lead role is physically and emotionally demanding and Edred Utomi fills every aspect of Alexander Hamilton, even eerily recreating the vocals of Miranda, who created the lead role in the original Broadway cast.

Orpheum Theatre - Omaha, NE

Betsie Freeman, Omaha World Herald : Stephanie Umoh as Angelica Schuyler. Her voice lives up to any previous Angelicas I've seen or heard, and that's an impressive group that includes Renée Elise Goldsberry, who will be here next year with the Omaha Symphony. Bryson Bruce as Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. His "What'd I Miss" was the most boisterous and funny I've seen. Paul Oakley Stovall as George Washington. He has a powerful voice and is aided by his towering presence. He owns the stage when he's on it. Peter Matthew Smith as King George. He exaggerates his character's sneering, giving an almost sinister edge to George's funny British music-hall schtick. That was a new interpretation, at least to me.

Sara Meadows, The Gateway : Another thing that stood out to me was the different races of the actors. With Black Lives Matter coming to the forefront, it was nice to finally see a change in the theater world. Not to mention, Black people often get overlooked as the lead roles in theater, so this made history in the musical industry. The musical did an impressive job of making a big statement with both the actors and musical numbers.

Bruce Miller, Sioux City Journal : Chief among them: Stephanie Umoh, who creates an Angelica Schuyler who resonates even in scenes she's not in. She has a voice that's incredible, giving songs like "Satisfied" and "It's Quiet Uptown" even more emotion than you could imagine. With "One Last Time," Paul Oakley Stovall comes as close as "Hamilton" gets to a mid-show standing ovation. His booming voice conveys the heft of George Washington, revealing the implications of his absence from the country's key position.

Music Hall at Fair Park - Dallas, TX

Lorens Portalatin, BroadwayWorld : The North American Angelica tour of HAMILTON is packed with talent and star power throughout the cast. Most notably Edred Utomi as Hamilton, Josh Tower as Aaron Burr, and Stephanie Umoh as Angelica Schuyler. Josh Tower showed a lovely, tender side of Burr during Dear Theodosia which greatly differed from his feverish acts after The Room Where It Happens. Utomi's Hamilton was confident and calculative as he made each move that would further Hamilton's career. Utomi's chemistry with Eliza played by Zoe Jensen was touching and heartbreaking. Umoh's Angelica was the perfect representation of loyalty and sisterhood.

Rich Lopez, Dallas Voice : At the center of it all was Edred Utomi as the titular character. His gravitas and even comic timing gave the character layers of complexity. The wondrous part of his performance continued when he's not singing. Utomi did so much silent acting that I felt him thinking as Hamilton when Thomas Jefferson (David Park) or George Washington (Paul Oakley Stovall) were having their say. Particularly the way he registered emotion with his wife Eliza (Zoe Jensen) was prodigious.

Gadi Elkon, Selig Film News : Our Alexander is Edred Utomi who's hops, voice quality and cheeky moves are all on point. Josh Tower is a bit more of a filled-out Aaron Burr but his vocal range really carries well in the complexity of the infamous figure. Tower was also fantastic as Berry Gordy in the underrated Motown the Musical. Paul Oakley Stovall is the aged vet whose booming voice embodies the famous George Washington. Stovall is the touring figure that captures your full attention whenever he tackles the stage. The two standout male performers though are David Park as Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson and Peter Matthew Smith as King George. Park's vibrant style is a real treat that adds flair and style to show. Park working off Utomi in the second half's debate scenes are truly fantastic to witness.

John Garcia, The Column Online : I STRONGLY urge every Artistic Director, Director, and casting associate within the DFW area to attend this very production so that you can get a better understanding and grasp of what non-traditional casting means. I was so immensely impressed and incredibly moved to see a beautiful array of colors and nationalities within the company, and all of them portraying the principal roles-not regulated to the ensemble, which tends to happen so much in the ill-conceived answer that is how to cast non-traditionally. But here is why it works so magically and superbly here in this musical: These individuals HAVE the magnetic talent to show why they are in these roles. It's as easy as that.

Bass Concert Hall - Austin, TX

Lynn Beaver, BroadwayWorld : HAMILTON is a " Non-Stop " (yes, it's a song) thrill ride from curtain to curtain. What you'll see is a twin to the Tony winning original seen by millions. The set, lighting, costumes and choreography are as close to the Broadway show as possible, all perfectly executed but the traveling cast. What this tour really brings is fresh performers who give their individual art to each character and the undeniable thrill of live theatre. And what a thrill it is. It's not only a love letter to an American hero, it's a love letter to the Broadway musical written by a poetic master.

Eric Webb and Kelsey Bradshaw, Austin 360: One: I think the show holds up to multiple viewings, now that I've seen it twice in person and once on Disney+. And two: I'm rethinking the backlash to Lin-Manuel Miranda and "Hamilton" - that it's corny, that it's wrongheaded in its glorification of these historical figures - which was inevitable as soon as the show became a whole thing. Seeing this production at Bass Concert Hall reminded me of how much "Hamilton" actually does try to subvert ideas about colonialism, immigration and race. It's not my place to speak to the validity of the execution. But it got me thinking again, which is all art can really hope to do.

Gina Alligood, Austin 101 : Of course Hamilton was center stage throughout the evening, but it was the Schuyler sisters who spoke to me: Eliza (Zoe Jensen), Peggy (Olivia Puckett), and Angelica (Stephanie Umoh). It's clear as the story unfolds that Hamilton's legacy might never have been if not for these women. Angelica is the oldest sister who sacrifices her own dreams to ensure Eliza marries first. Sadly, Eliza fell in love with the romantic man she thought he was, only to be left with unfathomable heartache.

Orpheum Theater - Memphis, TN

AniKatrina Fageol, BroadwayWorld : Edred Utomi gives a delightful portrayal of the title character. With his smooth tones and fun energy, he makes for a perfect focus for the audience. The Schuyler Sisters, also, provide both comic relief and roiling emotions with their songs. King George, portrayed by Peter Matthew Smith , is the comedic gold of the show and certainly stole the spotlight whenever he made an entrance. His "You'll Be Back" takes the audience away from the intensity of the looming war or the emotional turmoil on stage for a few moments before returning us to the scene. Several of the actors portray multiple characters throughout Act I and Act II. Since half of the population has seen the musical on Disney+, there was a slight worry that there would not be much deviation but it was wonderful to see how each and every character made the role their own and gave it a personal spin.

Jesse Davis, Memphis Flyer : Paul Oakley Stovall, playing the part of George Washington, was the standout performance for me. Stovall delivered his lines effortlessly, as if he were tossing them to the audience as an afterthought. It takes a lot of work to make something look that easy.

Bass Performance Hall - Fort Worth, TX

Alex Bentley, Culture Map : Edred Utomi stars as Alexander Hamilton, bringing an ebullience and energy to the role, typified by two extremely high hops while performing the early show-stopper "My Shot." His performance seems to bring out the best in the rest of the cast.

Robinson Center Music Hall - Little Rock, AR

Eric E. Harrison, Arkansas Democrat Gazette : The cast consists mostly of young people who are making their first big theatrical splashes on the "Angelica" tour, which is one of three current road troupes (which, by the way, will also play Fayetteville's Walton Arts Center, March 22-April 3). It may be a touring cast, but it's no less talented or less worthy than one you'd see on Broadway or in one of the big-city sit-down companies.

Hobby Center for the Performing Arts - Houston, TX

Brett Cullum, BroadwayWorld : Leading the show for this tour is Edred Utomi as the titular lead of "A. Ham". He is a striking fellow with a silky voice, and he makes the role his own. It differs from Lin-Manuel Miranda 's interpretation, and he adds a sensual swagger that makes the "ladykiller" reputation of Alexander much easier to swallow. He's slick, and he does an impressive turn throughout his numbers. David Park pulls double duty as the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson . It's stunning when you realize the same actor plays both parts, because he manages to disappear in both. Josh Tower as Aaron Burr and Paul Oakley Stovall as George Washington have strong stage and vocal presences that got standing ovations after their respective solos. Zoe Jensen adds a whole lot of heart to Eliza Hamilton, while Stephanie Umoh is a fiery Angelica. Peter Matthew Smith had the audience clapping with glee every time he appeared as a hammy King George.

Doni Wilson, Preview : From the early number by Hamilton (a memorable Edred Utomi) in which he declares that he is not going to throw away "My Shot," to the pop music love songs such as "Helpless," sung by the Schuyler sisters, who fall for Hamilton's considerable charms, to the rap monologues of the characters that dramatize the personal and political stakes for all of them, the music is a marvel both in composition and execution. Josh Tower's portrayal of Aaron Burr ("the damn fool who shot him" who tells Hamilton "Talk less, smile more") was a convincing mix of arrogance and regret. A highlight was watching John Devereaux as King George sing his deliciously comic numbers as the revolution evolves.

D.L. Groover, Houston Press : The entire enterprise is buoyant and a constant joy of discovery. This is what the best of Broadway can do. Granted these are exceptional talents working at the top of their game, but their worlds coalesce in the most magnificent, affecting, and emotional way. The touring cast nimbly matches the original, with standout performances (along with the above-mentioned actors) by Stephanie Umoh, as Hamilton's unrequited love Angelica, sister of Hamilton's wife Eliza; Paul Oakley Stovall, as boisterous and commanding George Washington; David Park, as preening Thomas Jefferson, although his Lafayette was undecipherable; Yana Perrault, as Hamilton's adulterous lover Mrs. Reynolds.

Walton Arts Center - Fayetteville, AR

Kevin Kinder, Fayetteville Flyer : And it is that most recent context that informs the production of "Hamilton" now in Fayetteville. Some of the initial charm of seeing the music is no longer moving for me. It often felt like characters were giving knowing verbal winks to the audience as if to say "You liked that joke, huh?" I say this while also acknowledging that even as I felt my attention drifting through familiar material, I found myself emotionally walloped by the concluding scenes all over again.

Blumenthal Performing Arts Center - Charlotte, NC

Vickie Evans, BroadwayWorld : This spectacular cast was led by Edred Utomi , who is African-American. Go figure! Who would have ever envisioned that Alexander Hamilton would be portrayed by an African-American? Unheard of...indeed, prior to Hamilton . Yet, there is a commonality there beyond race, both have immigrant parents, Edred's parents are Nigerian. Undoubtedly, Lin broke all the unspoken rules of theater here and the barrier of color lines...and oh, how it was needed. Especially now, in a time when there is so much racial unrest in this country, ushered in by the death of George Floyd. This melting pot of incredible talent on stage makes me so proud to truly be an American because I see people who look like "me" operating in a mainstream capacity. Diversity and Inclusion at its best.

Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham, NC

Nicole Ackman, BroadwayWorld : Edred Utomi is fantastic as Alexander Hamilton, starting out the show shy and awkward and building Hamilton's confidence as he meets his kindred spirits and grows surer of himself. His energy and articulateness contrast well with his softness in scenes with Eliza. Every actor does a great job of making the role their own from Josh Tower as Aaron Burr to Yana Perrault as Peggy and Maria. (About half of the lead roles are double-cast, with the actor playing one character in the first act and another in the second act.)

Peace Center - Greenville, SC

David Dykes, Business Magazine : Wednesday night's sold-out performance, the second show in a run that goes through June 19, 2022, offered 2½ hours' worth of dazzling performances that elevated Miranda's Pulitzer Prize-winning words and music, enlivened by Andy Blankenbuehler's inventive choreography.

Steve Wong, Carolina Curtain Call : To be such a spectacular production, presented in such unconventional ways, patrons get a good lesson in American history. With that in mind, you might want to brush up on who Hamilton is other than the face on the $10 bill. Also, there are a couple of key phrases associated with Hamilton that will be invaluable for you think about, as you see it and later as you consider the deeper meanings: Hamilton's creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has said, it is a show about "America then, told by America now" and "I'm not throwing away my shot," which is taken for the song "My Shot" and said throughout the show. Remember those words, and your understanding will definitely be better.

Saenger Theatre - New Orleans, LA

Jenny Bravo, BroadwayWorld : But as incredible as the set, stage, and lights are, the cast truly brings this production to life. In this particular cast, the two standouts for me were Deejay Young as Alexander Hamilton and Zoe Jensen as Eliza Hamilton. Deejay was the Hamilton understudy and I, for one, am so grateful that we were able to see his portrayal of the character. He brought a confidence and clarity to this role that I have yet to see. Bonus points to him for really nailing each age of Hamilton.

Overture Center - Madison, WI

Scott Rawson, BroadwayWorld : Edred Utomi portrayed Alexander Hamilton with vigor and poise. Josh Tower 's play on Aaron Burr was done with just the right amount of emotion to make us understand who he was and why he did all that he did. Lastly,Rockford IL. native, Zoe Jensen 's take on Eliza Hamilton's struggles touched the hearts of those fortunate enough to see the performance.

Stranahan Theater - Toledo, OH

Jeff McGinnis, Toledo City Paper : It is a high compliment, then, to say that the members of the "Angelica" touring cast of Hamilton deliver an experience that lives up to the sights, sounds and emotions audiences expect of the show. In addition, the performers find ways to add small touches and choices that bring new joys from the production. This is Hamilton as you remember and love it- but also a bit more.

The Aronoff Center [Proctor and Gamble Hall] - Cincinnati, OH

Behind the Curtain Cincinnati : Edred Utomi is very enjoyable in the title role, bringing a great energy to the youthful man we meet in act I and a grounded yet somewhat world-weary older version in act II. There were times I struggled hearing his lighter singing voice. Also strong was Neptune in the role of George Washington. Zoe Jensen is wonderful in her portrayal of Eliza Hamilton. Her vocals in "Burn" and the "Finale" were strong and emotionally moving. Yana Peffault impresses with her smoky, sultry vocals as Maria Reynolds. A special shout-out to the incredibly hard working and talented members of the ensemble that serve as the foundation of this show.

Tulsa Performing Arts Center - Tulsa, OK

James D. Watts Jr., Tulsa World : The character of Hamilton requires an actor who can convey the coiled, febrile energy that drives Hamilton in pursuit of his shot at making a mark on the world, and while Utomi says the words and sings the songs capably, he doesn't project that sort of energy and charm.

Kansas City Music Hall - Kansas City, MO

Vivian Kane, KC Studio : As Alexander Hamilton himself, Edred Utomi is spectacular, truly embodying the "young, scrappy, and hungry" energy the character proclaims himself to have. At times, Utomi seems to struggle to keep up with the longer phrases, losing breath (the same can be said for Stephanie Umoh's Angelica Schuyler) but he shines when his character is engaged in debate, going full knives-out on the Constitutional Convention. (The show's other major stand-out is Alysha Deslorieux, bringing extreme depth and charm to the complex role of Eliza Hamilton.)

Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis, MN

Jared Fessler, BroadwayWorld : This cast was stellar! These actors were connected to thier characters but put their own to them as well. They made great character choices and there was still that element of powerful acting and character development. The score and the script were great and getting to hear the songs of "Schyler Sisters, Helpless, Burn," and other favorites live was great. All of the actors had powerful singing voices and the ensamble numbers were impeccable! The set, the stage effects, lighting and sound were magnificant! I felt so fortunate to be in the room where it happened!

‘Hamilton’ Review: A Contemporary Classic Dazzles in Boston

"Hamilton" performs in Boston until March 12 as part of its North American Tour.

While much of the “Hamilton”-mania that consumed American culture during its 2015 Broadway premiere has since died down, the show remains equally as original and engaging to this day. Directed by Thomas Kail, “Hamilton” (The North American Tour) runs from Jan. 17 through March 12 at the Citizens Bank Opera House. The Philip Cast upheld the show's reputation as a bona fide Broadway classic. The Musical’s timeless appeal and undeniable brilliance protects it from many of the common pitfalls that accompany a touring production. Moreover, “Hamilton” in Boston benefits not just from its masterful lyricism, but also from several standout performances and highly inventive staging.

It is no secret that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s biographical reimagining, mostly consisting of rap and hip-hop songs, is a rather stunning lyrical feat. But until audiences find themselves seated for a live production of “Hamilton,” it is hard to fully comprehend the scope of Miranda’s genius. Unlike when watching the filmed production on Disney+, the immersive experience of seeing “Hamilton” live requires a kind of careful attention in audiences that is hard to replicate in a distraction-filled living room.

A key ingredient in the show’s impeccable musical composition is its consistent and effective use of lyrical and sonic motifs. With the entire show sung at a rather brisk pace, it seems as though “Hamilton” would be difficult to comprehend. However, the reality is exactly the opposite. Many of the show’s most famous songs, such as “My Shot” and “Satisfied,” have choruses that reappear throughout the show to connect the various events of Hamilton’s life. This mode of lyrical reprisal lends a pleasant cumulative dimension to the show, using short-term recognition to ease audience comprehension. The end result is the rare musical that simultaneously presents excellent music and powerful messages.

As for the performers giving life to Miranda’s work in Boston, there were no weak links among the cast. However, some stars shined especially bright. Nikisha Williams (“Eliza Hamilton”) stole every one of her scenes with a voice that dazzled the entire opera house. And when Williams performed “Burn,” perhaps the most vocally-demanding and emotionally-charged number in the show, she cemented her standout status by singing and emoting with a deep sorrow that touched everyone in the theater. By never sacrificing believability for excessive dramatics, Williams brought the theater to complete, awe-inspired silence. Jared Dixon (“Aaron Burr”) was also exceptional, as his smooth and rich vocals contrasted beautifully with his character’s increasingly frenzied state of mind.

And while “Hamilton” does cover much important historical ground in its almost three hour running time, Miranda thankfully infuses much of the show with a light, comedic tone. This dimension of the production is most obviously conveyed in the characters of “Thomas Jefferson” and “King George III,” portrayed by Jared Howelton and Neil Haskell, respectively. Both actors imbued their characters with very humorous personalities and mannerisms, eliciting uproars of laughter from the audience on many occasions.

In addition to wonderful performances, the scenic design by David Korins is notably captivating. While the somewhat bare, rope-filled set spanning multiple levels has become iconic, its real success lies in the innovative use of a double-rotating stage. The rotating element makes the eye-catching choreography more dynamic and engaging. And during “The World Was Wide Enough,” when the show opts for a rare moment of stillness among the actors, the jarring contrast with the usually motion-filled stage successfully adds weight to the words being sung.

While this advice may seem superfluous in a post- Hamilfans world, Boston residents and visitors should make every effort to see the show before it leaves Boston in March. This production may not seek to reinvent the original “Hamilton” formula, but luckily for audiences, it’s a winner either way. Whether a reluctant theatergoer, a crazed fan, or somewhere in between, “Hamilton” is an exceptional artistic and educational experience that will win over the hearts of even the most skeptical attendees.

‘Hamilton’ is back at Kennedy Center as invigorating as ever

Watching performers masterfully step into these characters and tell their story is breathtaking.

The North American Tour of the worldwide phenomenon that is Hamilton has returned to the Kennedy Center. Lin Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop/rap musical history epic follows the journey of Alexander Hamilton as he grows from an orphan to a Founding Father of our nation, amid his personal downfalls and many triumphs. Hamilton originally premiered on Broadway in 2015 and a filmed version appeared on Disney+ in 2020.

The show is the gorgeous culmination of many moving parts, each being equally vital to the essence of the production. Andy Blankenbuehler’s original choreography and Thomas Kail’s direction are married to the music, and this would not be Hamilton without any of them. The same could be said for David Korins’ meticulous set design, with turntables and scaffolding symbolizing the cyclical nature of life and the development of the country.

north american tour hamilton cast

There are currently three touring casts and the one gracing the stage of the Opera House is called the Philip. I can’t speak to the other two casts (the Angelica and the Peggy), but the Philip does not disappoint. Pierre Jean Gonzalez plays Hamilton with passion and beautifully displays his evolution through naivete as a young immigrant orphan into a highly respected public figure.

Jared Dixon is his frenemy rival, Aaron Burr, and the two effectively play off each other as they continuously cross paths and butt heads. Dixon personifies the burgeoning resentment Burr has for Hamilton’s life and political path. Dixon and Gonzalez have countless mentionable moments, but my favorite is the love and tenderness of “Dear Theodosia” showing these strong pillars of men completely unraveling from the experience of fatherhood.

Marcus Choi performs as the formidable George Washington, embodying the balance of poise,  power, and humility. A contrast to the arrogance and pomp of King George, brilliantly portrayed by Neil Haskell with such blatant viciousness you instantly love to hate him. Haskell’s “You’ll Be Back” is an absolute delight.

There is no weak link in this cast with Warren Egypt Franklin crushing as a saucy Lafayette and then the sharp-tongued Thoman Jefferson in the second act, singing the hyped “What’d I Miss.” As Hercules Mulligan, Conroe Brooks (understudying Desmond Sean Ellington) carries the forceful intensity the role requires, only to transform into the muted and measured Madison of act two. And rounding out the friend trio is Hamilton’s bestie, John Laurens, who Marcus John imbues with bravery and dedication and then becomes the Hamilton mini-me, Philip, possessing all of the innocence and confidence his father carried in the first act.

north american tour hamilton cast

The women are no exception to exceptionalism. Julia Estrada (understudying Paige Smallwood) is the third-wheel forgettable sister “and” Peggy, and then exudes fervent persuasion as the lusty Maria Reynolds. Ta’Rea Campbell as Angelica Schuyler is an intelligent woman of forceful determination. Her gut-wrenching “It’s Quiet Uptown” brought me to full tears. And Vanessa Magula (understudying Stephanie Jae Park) is Eliza Hamilton, who begins as a trusting, joyful young woman. Magula’s stunning “Burn” tears your heart in two as you watch betrayal destroy her emotionally, but then regains her strength and resolve to honor Hamilton in the emotional “Finale.”

Last but not least, the ensemble is crucial to the unfolding tale and their precision and execution are remarkably performed by Aaron J. Albano, Taylor Broadard, Demarius R. Copes, Pedro Garza, Cyndal Gilmore, Kristen Hoagland, Gabriel Hyman, Mallory Michaellann, Takeo McCarroll, Trevor Miles, and Christopher Rice-Thomson.

The North American Tour of Hamilton is deliciously fulfilling, checking all the required theater boxes. The musical numbers lift the audience from their seats, the cast gives impressive portrayals with heart, and the complex technical aspect of the production is seemingly flawless.

There are so many highlights, I cannot mention them all. The final notes of Choi’s Washington singing “One Last Time” gave me chills. The biting wit and cheekiness of Burr (Dixon) and Hamilton (Gonzalez) in “Your Obedient Servant” is pure hilarity. The unison, off-hand line delivered by Lafayette (Franklin) and Hamilton (Gonzalez) that immigrants “get the job done” brought cheers and yelps of appreciation from the crowd. Gonzalez’s Hamilton’s dismantling of Seabury (Aaron J. Albano) in “Farmer Refuted” is absolute perfection.

And Eliza’s gasp at the end? Is she seeing Hamilton? Her son? Or is it the realization that her longing for her husband’s story to be heard has been fulfilled by herself? There are several theories as to its meaning and Miranda is said to welcome the debate without offering a definitive answer.

north american tour hamilton cast

That is part of the beauty of live performance. We know the words to the songs. We know the melodies and moves, but watching performers masterfully step into these characters and tell their story with their individual interpretations is breathtaking. And the Philip cast does exactly that on the stage of the Kennedy Center.

This was my second time seeing Hamilton in live theater and the experience was just as invigorating as the first time. The energy in the theater is difficult to match with words and it’s impossible to tell who is more excited to be there, the cast or the audience. Palpable energy flows through the entire show and infects the air. You laugh, you cry, you smack your husband because he keeps trying to sing along.

Kennedy Center’s run of Hamilton is worth the long line and terrible traffic to get to see this magical production. The show retains all of the bubbling anticipation and vivacity of when it was first revealed to the public. And I don’t foresee that fierce admiration for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s finest work to dissipate any time soon.

Running Time: Approximately two hours 45 minutes, with one 15-minute intermission.

I saw the production on August 6th and loved it. But the actresses you list as playing Eliza and Peggy were not in the production, or listed in the program as playing those roles — were they understudies for a different performance?

Thanks for catching that. Yes, at the performance reviewed, Eliza and Peggy were played by understudies, and the text has been edited to make that clear.

How long is the performance?

Approximately two hours 45 minutes, with one 15-minute intermission.

History Has Its Eyes on Hamilton (and It Isn't Looking Great)

By Conner Reed April 15, 2022

north american tour hamilton cast

The company of  Hamilton

Image: Joan Marcus

There’s something haunted about watching  Hamilton  in 2022 . Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Pulitzer-winning smash about the life and times of America’s first secretary of the treasury is only seven years old, but it carries the conspicuous specter of the Obama-era optimism that birthed it. (Playwright Ishmael Reed has been saying as much since at least 2019, when his scathing one-act  The Haunting of Lin-Manuel Miranda  premiered in New York.)  The show’s North American tour arrived in Portland on April 13, and it will hold down the Keller Auditorium for the rest of the month in a nearly sold-out run.  You probably already know if you’ll be there.

Indeed, there is maybe no act more Sisyphean than writing a review of the musical  Hamilton  this many years into its global dominance—the notion that anyone might be agnostic at this point is roughly as insane as asking a stranger point-blank if they “like Adele.” But with distance from the red-hot hype of seven years (and two administrations) ago, it’s easier than ever to clock the show for what it is: an overstuffed, occasionally brilliant book report from the most precocious kid in class. And it’s instructive to consider which of those attributes helped it ascend to cultural juggernaut status.

In case you’re somehow unfamiliar: Hamilton spans from 1776 to the turn of the 19 th century, following young upstart Alexander Hamilton (played by Julius Thomas III) and his perennial frenemy Aaron Burr (Donald Webber, Jr.) as they love, lose, and mingle with a host of American revolutionaries. The score and casting are the kicker: it’s a lily-white story told by a company of color, who rap and croon out slick Broadway R&B as they piece together a fledgling nation.

Hamilton  is nothing if not studious. Miranda’s score overflows with historical detail and bookish witticisms that literal millions now wield like cultural flashcards; names like Marquis de Lafayette and Angelica Schuyler have entered the popular lexicon almost exclusively on the back of this musical. But the problem with that studiousness is the way it chafes against Miranda’s instincts for human-scale drama.  Hamilton ultimately covers too much ground in its frenetic two-and-a-half-hours, and the sporadic infusions of genuine passion (like “Burn,” Eliza Schuyler’s scorned power ballad, or Aaron Burr’s torchy manifesto “Wait for It”) wind up elbowing for space among the too-clever Wikipedia summaries that form the show’s connective tissue.

In the end, for all its staggering rhymes (many of which fly by so fast you might miss them if you haven't studied in advance),  Hamilton  fails to nail down some fundamental necessities. We never learn why we should care about Alexander Hamilton, specifically—Miranda just supposes we’ll adore him for his ambition—and despite its surface subversions, we're rarely encouraged to think critically about the American institutions being built before our eyes. It’s a show that knows better than to cast white men as our “Founding Fathers,” but not well enough to suppose that those men had flaws more significant than a penchant for social climbing or a light brush with adultery. The few mentions of slavery whizz by without much incident. In 2015, it was easier to take an audience’s fundamental belief in the American experiment for granted; in the harsh light of 2022, catch-phrases like “Immigrants: we get the job done!” sound unbearably facile.

Now, national tours exist to bring musicals to crevices of the country they may not otherwise reach. Theater-lovers—particularly young ones—who have lived and died by the  Hamilton  cast recording will be rightfully delighted at the opportunity to see it in the flesh without footing a travel bill to New York. And as presented in Portland, there are sparks of real magic: Paris Nix is a hoot pulling double duty as Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, and Marja Harmon’s Angelica Schuyler is sharp and charismatic (with pipes that bring to mind a huskier Idina Menzel). But there’s something undeniably distressing about the price audiences will have to pay to get in the door: prime orchestra seats, which typically sell for about $120 at one of the Keller’s Broadway Across America engagements, are running a cool $400 for  Hamilton . (There is, of course, the ultra-competitive lottery , which offers a lucky few $10 tickets each night.)

Maybe that price tag accounts, in part, for the atmosphere of determined enjoyment in the room. At the performance I attended, the show’s opening lyrics were drowned out by the kind of deafening applause you might expect at a Lady Gaga gig, and early melodies were hummed by scores of audience members who may as well have been home watching it all play out on Disney+. The whole evening felt more like dutiful reenactment than live-wire magic making, and it was often hard to tell whether the crowd was moved more by the quality of the material before them or the thrill of recognition.

The blame for that limpness lies largely with the venue. In New York,  Hamilton  runs in the Richard Rodgers Theater, which seats about 1,300; a sold-out night at the Keller, on the other hand, packs in nearly 3,000 bodies. The space is such a cavern that it dwarfs its own proscenium, making even some of the $400 seats feel miles away from the action. That distance sometimes causes the stage to register more like an enormous screen, and it encourages a mummified engagement where audience and actors do not exchange anything approaching raw energy.

Still, however remote, the production is plenty competent—it retains the Broadway staging's evocative lighting, and only Rick Negron's King George stands out as a real weak link in the cast (he fails to properly exhume the comic riches in his Britpop park-and-bark numbers). Songs like "The World Was Wide Enough" and "The Room Where It Happens" maintain their virtuosic punch, even if others get lost in muddy blocking. If you're expecting Hamilton , you will get Hamilton , and I don't begrudge you that.

Just don't be surprised if you squirm in your seat a bit and find yourself living out an ironic illustration of one of the show’s central themes: you might break your back to get into the room where it happens, but its contents are rarely as satisfying as you’d hope.

7:30 p.m. Tue–Fri, 1 & 8 p.m. Sat, 2 & 7 p.m. Sun through May 1, Keller Auditorium, $65–400

Theater Review: HAMILTON (North American Tour)

Post image for Theater Review: HAMILTON (North American Tour)

OUR FUNKY FOUNDING FATHERS

A hip-hop Alexander Hamilton? A beat-box Father of His Country? A jumping James Madison and a jiveass Jefferson who disses bigtime in a poetry slam? The ten-dollar bill will never be the same (or the dollar note for that matter). A sassy-spunky 2015 blast from the past set to irresistible rhythms,  Hamilton  is a wildly successful revamp (or reclamation) by Lin-Manuel Miranda (creator of  In the Heights ). It feels as revolutionary as the war it covers and as bold as the new nation it celebrates.

A money maker about the credit-worthy man who made our money (our first treasury secretary, co-author of  The Federalist Papers , and deal-maker for a strong government and centralized economy),  Hamilton is indefinitely invincible in this stop at Segerstrom Hall as part of a North American Tour.

north american tour hamilton cast

Rapping and rampaging in set designer David Korins ’ big barn with wooden walkways and revolving stage, all but dancing to Howell Binkley ’s wizard lighting, Miranda’s makeover finds its heart beat  in “(I’m Not Going to Lose) My Shot” (darkly ironic, considering Hamilton’s demise). This is Hamilton’s declaration of independence as a hopeful, hungry seeker of newly minted glory, driven by a destiny he carves himself. Everything old is new again as we learn “who lives, who dies, who tells your story.”

DeAundre’ Woods tackles the title role with combustible ambition, climbing notes and surmounting obstacles from 1776 to 1800. Along Miranda’s “green brick road” we meet Hamilton’s true if tried helpmate Eliza (lovely Morgan Anita Wood ), his surrogate dad George Washington ( Darnell Abraham ), his ally Madison ( Brandon Louis Armstrong ), his opportunistic foil Burr ( Donald Webber, Jr. ), and his ideological foe Thomas Jefferson ( Paris Nix ). (John Adams, who HBO covered well enough, does not appear.) Keeping it huge as well as real, Miranda includes a sardonically clueless George III ( Rick Negron ), a stalwart Marquis de Lafayette (Nix), Hamilton’s cut-from-the-same-cloth teenage son Philip ( Manuel Stark Santos ), and Angelica Schuyler ( Marja Harmon ), Hamilton’s sustaining Muse and sister-in-law. Some actors are still working on diction, others were heard perfectly.

north american tour hamilton cast

Drawing from Ron Chernow ’s 2004 biography, the action contrasts private and public happenings to show how, more than politics, history is local. Hamilton seems as much the subtle strategist who became G.W.’s “right hand man” as the skilled suitor to the Schuyler sisters, as much a comer (“History Has Its Eyes on You”) as a marked man (“The World Was Wide Enough”).

Radiating pluck and luck, opposing Northern interests to Southern subversion, Woods’ Hamilton is a dogged campaigner, whether negotiating  affaires d’honneur  (“Ten Duel Commandments”); intriguing for advantage (“Cabinet Battle”); forging a difference (“The Room Where It Happens”); admitting to bribing an irate husband to cover an adulterous affair (“The Reynolds Pamphlet”); or simply settling for some short serenity (“That Would Be Enough”). Paralleling the ardor of his once and future victim with his own aching aspirations, Mr. Webber, Jr.’s Burr (“Wait for It”), himself an orphan, fits Hamilton as Javert does Jean Valjean. Ms. Woods incarnates heartbreak in Eliza’s pop anthem “Burn.” No Madame Tussaud’s waxworks, the ensemble is game for fame.

north american tour hamilton cast

You can fault Miranda’s fascination with a flawed hero to rewrite the story a bit — but, hey, this is the land of Musical Comedy: No bronze statue in the making, Hamilton was not opposed to slavery. A closet elitist, he was no pal to democracy, despising the mob and cultivating fellow plutocrats. It’s strange that Hamilton was decisive in making his arch adversary Thomas Jefferson our third president: Miranda’s ire at the adulterous slave owner stops him from acknowledging the populist fervor of a virtuous Virginian. (For more dicrepensies to the story, see the displays in the lobby.)

But, pulsating to Andy Klankenbuehler ’s kinetic choreography, Hamilton  is a “non-stop” Pulitzer and Tony-winning musical, not a political testament. A nearly three-hour amusement ride, this is America as seen from the future, not projected from the past. Thomas Kail ’s faithful staging squeezes the juices from Miranda’s R&B magic-making. When it’s not S.R.O. (which it was on opening night), there will be dancing in the aisles. It’s impossible not to be caught up in the sheer anti-boredom of it all, thrill-making 21st-century theatricality to rechristen the republic.

Tampa native takes to the stage with 'Hamilton' tour

TAMPA, Fla. — The return of "Hamilton" to the Straz Center for the Performing Arts also brings a hometown performer back to the theater he grew up attending.

What You Need To Know

Tampa native deejay young is performing at the straz this month as part of the "hamilton" north american tour young is a standby and covers five principle roles, including alexander hamilton and aaron burr young got his start singing at church and grew to love musical theater while attending blake high school audiences can catch young starring as hamilton on jan. 17.

"I've been here so many times," Deejay Young said of the Straz. "I think elementary school was the first time I'd ever been here, and I would come see the Florida Orchestra. I was so incredibly inspired by that. I would come see other Broadway tours — me and my family would come. So, this is a very special homecoming moment that I'm just incredibly grateful for."

Young is a standby in the Angelica cast of the "Hamilton" North American tour. At any given show, he can be called on to cover the roles of Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, John Laurens/Philip Hamilton and Hercules Mulligan/James Madison.

"Sometimes, like 30 minutes, sometimes, you know, a week — it really depends," Young said of the notice he gets before filling in. "I've gone on in the middle of the show before. So, I've just learned to just be ready at any moment."

Young said he was born and raised in Tampa, and his love of music began at a young age.

"I grew up singing in church here in Tampa. My mom was a choir director. My mom was a singer, as well. So, that was always in me, but being at Blake, I was able to be a part of my first musical, which was 'Ragtime'," Young said of his time attending Howard W. Blake High School. "It changed my life forever."

After graduating from Blake in 2008, Young said he attended Florida A&M University before rethinking the path he wanted to take and moving to Orlando.

"Things kind of blossomed from there with Disney. I got signed for a little bit. That didn't work out, and so I came back to Tampa, and things just kind of blossomed from there, but it has not been easy. It hasn't been squeaky clean to get to this moment. It's been a lot of hard work, a lot of rejections," Young said.

In 2019, he auditioned for the "Hamilton" tour in Orlando.

"They kept asking for material, different roles and different characters. And I'm like, 'What exactly are they expecting of me? What do they want me to do?'" Young said.

He found out that summer that he'd be joining the tour.

Tampa audiences have seen Young perform as Aaron Burr, and he's expected to play Alexander Hamilton at the Jan. 17 show.

"It's been surreal," Young said of performing in his hometown. "It's been an honor. It's been super humbling. My beginnings were here. I was born and raised here. So, it's just incredibly special to be here and share such an incredible homecoming moment with not only my family, but the people who I grew up with and have shared incredible moments with. It's real special."

While in town, Young has been busy outside of "Hamilton", singing the national anthem at the Reliaquest Bowl with fellow cast members and debuting his first film, "Hisstory: Primitive" at a local theater. His original music can be found on iTunes. You can learn more about upcoming projects here .
