1. Pinipisakan Falls

Pinipisakan Falls is one of the picturesque tourist spots in Samar, owing to its enchanting and magical view. It has four layers with refreshing waters emerging from dense rainforests upstream.

The falls’ natural pool reflects the pale green color of the forest and one could not help but jump from one of the rocks and have an invigorating swim.

Despite its remoteness, Pinipisakan Falls is one of the most iconic Northern Samar tourist spots.

2. Langun-Gobingob Cave

Langun-Gobingob Cave boasts of the largest karst in the Philippines while the same cave system ranks as one of the biggest in Asia. It’s only now, however, that both local and foreign tourists are starting to frequent the said cave.

Inside, there are stunning rock formations such as huge columns. Bats and other creatures also live within.

3. Lulugayan Falls and Rapids

Dubbed as the Mini-Niagara Falls of the Philippines, Lulugayan Falls is one of the most iconic tourist spots in Samar. It resembles a huge curtain cascading over a window.

Dense rainforests also surround the waterfall. Its crystal-clear waters carved deep pockets of the pool where you can have a rejuvenating swim. Try climbing on one of the rocks and jump to the deepest part of the pool.

Make sure you know how to swim though. Meanwhile, there are cottages where you can have a picnic and cook your meals.

4. Ulot River

Ulot River is the ultimate destination for those wanting to experience a thrilling canoe adventure dubbed the Ulot Torpedo Boat Extreme Ride.

Expect bumps and humps as the boat takes you to the strong rapids of the river which ends at Deni’s Point. Here, you can have a picnic and swim in the cool and crystal-clear waters.

Huge boulders abound and you can try jumping or diving from one of these towards a deep part of the river.

5. Sohotan Caves & Natural Bridge Park

The Natural Bridge Park came into fruition in 1935 to protect the exotic rock formations, pristine rainforests, and caves along the Sohotan River. It’s one of the most visited tourist spots in Samar and is a treasure trove for biological explorers.

Navigate along the park and you’ll find beautiful pools and limestone formations. There is also a cave that hosts numerous bats. Explore the jungle and you’ll find yourself in the middle of ecological bounty.

6. Marabut Rock Formations

Marabut Marine Park, located at San Pedro Bay, hosts numerous limestone rock formations, some towering for more than 30 meters high with their own vegetation.

They’re almost like floating islands in contrast with the blue sea. You can try jumping from one of these if you’re an expert diver and swimmer. If you’re done visiting them, you can proceed to a 16 th Century Lighthouse, located on an islet.

Here, you’ll get a stunning view of the surrounding seascapes plus encounter different kinds of birds.

7. San Juanico Bridge

San Juanico Bridge is arguably one of the most easily recognized tourist spots in Samar province, being the longest bridge in the country. It connects Samar with neighboring Leyte island.

Aside from its length, the bridge boasts an arch-shaped design and measures 1.34 miles in length. Add to that the breathtaking views of the seas and islands as you drive along the bridge.

8. Samar Archaeological Museum

The Samar Archaeological Museum is one of the recognized cultural tourist spots in Samar. Sitting near Samar’s premium beaches, the museum displays a varied array of historical and cultural materials such as burial jars, Chinese porcelains, religious statues, and log coffins containing skeletal remains.

9. Tarangban Falls

Tarangban Falls is one of the less-known tourist spots in Samar province but it’s one worthy of further exploration and documentation. It boasts of several layers cascading on top of each other.

Collectively, the waterfall measures hundreds of feet, making it one of the highest in Samar and the region.

10. Biri Island

Biri Island lies in the northern part of Samar. It showcases stunning rock formations such as the so-called Magasang, Bel-at, Magsapad, Caranas, Macadlaw, and Puhunan.

11. Basey Church

Basey Church is one of the recognized historical tourist spots in Samar province, dating back during the Spanish times. It sits on an elevated spot and is distinct for its huge bell tower.

The church features creative stained glass and artistic depiction of biblical scenes on its ceilings and walling. Saint Michael, the town’s patron saint, rests on the altar and the locals celebrate his feast every September 29.

12. Capul Lighthouse

Capul Lighthouse was built to warn the villagers of impending raids from pirates or plunderers during the Spanish times. It’s one of the known historical tourist spots in Samar.

Aside from its historical significance, it offers a breathtaking view of the seas and the cliff. There is a site near the lighthouse where visitors can have a picnic.

13. Calicoan Island

Calicoan Island is located some kilometers away from mainland Samar. It is a perfect getaway for those who prefer less touristy destinations. If you’re an introvert like me, there’s just nothing like it here.

Imagine just simply lying on the beach while gazing at the serene waters, the waving palms, and the unspoiled white beaches. Plus, you’ll feel a sense of belongingness here because the locals are friendly and hospitable.

14. Lobo Cave

Lobo Cave is one of the legendary tourist spots in Samar province. Locals believe that fairies (called enkanto in the local dialect) inhabit the cave. When you get here, ask a local tour guide and you’ll hear a lot of fascinating stories about the cave.

Inside, you’ll find a large stalagmite formation that resembles a mythological angel. Lobo cave also features an underground river and cascading waterfalls.

15. Belat Pool

Belat Pool is locally-known for its crystal-clear waters and the beautiful rock formations surrounding it. It’s fit for both diving and swimming. Even bachelors can easily learn how to swim here because of the calm waters. Just make sure an expert swimmer is always on the lookout though.

16. Samar Island National Park

Samar Island National Park hosts the Philippines ’ largest contiguous tract of old-growth rainforest. Covering an area of more than 333, 300 hectares, the park is home to endemic and endangered species, making it a biological hotspot.

The park also includes some of Samar’s notable landmarks such as the Sohotan Natural Bridge National Park. Much of the park has been logged through the years.

Fortunately, more community-based initiatives are springing up to protect the park while espousing community-based development via ecotourism.

17. Minasangay Marine Eco-Park

Minasangay Marine Eco-Park is one of the rising tourist spots in Eastern Samar. Both locals and foreign visitors love coming here to experience its lush forests, coconut plantations, mangrove forests, and rock formations on the beach.

18. Makati Island

Makati Island boasts white beaches and crystal-clear waters. Coconut trees line the beach. Just like many islands in Eastern Samar, Makati Island is less touristy, thus, fit for those wanting to experience a rustic respite.

19. Canjuway Nature Park

Canjuway Nature Park is an idyllic escape for nature lovers and soul seekers. Tucked in a remote site, the park makes you feel like you are in times standing still.

Imagine sitting on one of the numerous rock formations while gazing at the crashing waves and the endless ocean. That is how it’s like here.

20. Calicoan Island & Beach

Also called ABCD Beach, Calicoan Island Beach is one of the most frequented tourist spots in Eastern Samar. The beach lies on the Pacific Ocean which enables bigger waves.

That makes the island one of the best surfing sites in the Philippines. Enjoy basking on the sandy part of the beach or you could try jumping/diving from one of the cliffs towards a deeper part of the sea.

21. Homonhon Island

Homonhon Island is one of the recognized historical tourist spots in Eastern Samar. This is the first island that Ferdinand Magellan reached on March 16, 1521, on his mission to circumnavigate the world.

But more than that, Homonhon Island is also an ecological paradise with white sand beaches extending for miles.

22. Apiton Island

Apiton Island is one of the promising tourist spots in Eastern Samar. Here, you’ll find breathtaking blue lagoons, tidal pools, and stunning rock formations.

Some of the rock formations are several meters high. Try jumping or diving from one of these towards deep pools. Just make sure you know how to swim. If you have time, avail of a guide and explore the dense forests.

23. Divinubo Island

Divinubo Island is a promising ecotourism destination with its pristine white beaches, lush forests, and beautiful rock formations. Take a boat around the island and you’ll find numerous sea caves, tidal pools, and lagoons. Atop a hill, you’ll find a lighthouse overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean.

24. Linao Cave

Linao Cave is one of the least known tourist spots in Eastern Samar. However, it is a potential destination that could bring the local town into the ecotourism limelight.

If you’ve heard of the famous Enchanted River in Surigao, then you’ve got a similar picture of Linao Cave. It lies deep in the jungle, giving it a surreal view. The waters of Linao Cave are also crystal clear and bluish.

25. Ban-awan Falls

Ban-awan Falls is one of the remotest tourist spots in Eastern Samar. But both locals and tourists keep coming here because of its majestic view, being the highest falls in the entire province.

It cascades on a massive cliff surrounded with green forests. Expect to trail on jungles and cross brooks before reaching the waterfall.

26. Matikawol Falls

Experience swimming in the vast pool of Matikawol Falls and let its cold and crystal-clear waters give you lasting rejuvenation.

Because of the waters’ pristine condition, locals claim that visitors can achieve healing from common illnesses especially colds. Lush forests surround the waterfall, giving it a dramatic view.

27. Pink Beach

Pink Beach is one of the most popular tourist spots in Northern Samar. Unlike the white, powdery sands in Boracay, the sands are literally pink! Who would not fall in love with such unusual landscape.

Aside from the pinkish sands, the waters here are also crystal-clear and these teem with marine life including coral reefs.

Acapulco Beach is one of the emerging tourist spots in Northern Samar. Both locals and foreign tourists love coming here because of its pristine condition. Its coastline boasts of both grayish and white beaches while the sea teems with marine life and coral reefs.

30. Dalupiri Island

Dalupiri Island boasts of a long stretch of white sands complementing rows of palm. There are different accommodations to choose from. Aside from swimming the pristine waters, tourists could go for snorkeling sessions.

On the other side of the island, there is a marine sanctuary that is home to a myriad of species. Catch sight of these and you’ll get lost in amazement.

31. Onay/Unay Beach

Onay/Unay Beach lies on the northeastern coast and is one of the secluded tourist spots in Northern Samar. Enjoy trailing on the golden beach sand while gazing at the serene and calm water of the sea.

On one end of the beach, you’ll find two massive rocks. For a thrilling experience, you can jump from one of these towards a deep part of the sea. Just make sure you know how to swim.

32. Biri Island Rock Formation

Biri Island Rock Formation is more than its pristine beaches and crystal-clear swimming pools. It also boasts of giant rock formations locally called Magasang, Bel-at, Macadlaw, Magsapad, Pinanahawan, and the Puhunan.

Because of the rocks humongous size, the island is also touted as the “battleground of the gods.” The island also offers tourist activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing.

Samar tourist spots: Must-see places and itinerary

Samar is truly a unique island, the landscape is just breath-taking. Samar island is different from the rest of the Philippines, facing the Pacific, the scenery changes from one place to another and is beautiful . There are a lot of places to visit on Samar Island, each one more beautiful than the other. If you like nature and are looking for a less touristy island, then Samar is for you and you should add it to your bucket list. Read on to discover the top Samar tourist spots and the recommended Samar itinerary.

Best Samar tourist spots:

1 – marabut rock formations.

These strange rock formations off the coast of Marabut are definitively worth a look. Carved over the centuries by the strong wave of the Pacific, the rocks are quite impressive. There’s also a couple of white sand beaches on some of the formations.

Most of the rock formations are near Caluwayan Palm Island Beach Resort , there’s no need to go all the way to Marabut city. You can rent a boat there for 500 pesos an hour. If you don’t want to go through the resort and to reduce the cost, you might want to try negotiating directly with a fisherman in one of the villages nearby.

2 – Sohoton National Park

Sohoton National Park truly is a hidden gem. Famous for its cave system and natural bridge, the park is one of the best Samar tourist spots.

You’ll start by taking a boat to get to the cave, the cave has 3 chambers and is really easy to visit. The guides are really knowledgeable and speak good English. After the visit, you’ll take a kayak to get to the natural bridge. You’ll pass some rapids on the way but the water is really shallow, you’ll have to walk through it. The views are really amazing and the bridge is just impressive.

It is called Sohoton because, during the American invasion, locals used to drop rocks from the top of the cliff on soldiers trying to travel on the river.

You’ll need to stop at the tourism office in Basey before heading to the park.

3 – Divinubo Island

Divinubo Island, also known as Eastern Samar’s hidden paradise , is a piece of heaven. This remote island is slow paced and perfect to unwind for a while. The beach there is amazing, bring your tent and some food to spent a great couple of days.

4 – Try Torpedo Boat

The Torpedo Boat Extreme Ride is a “community-based eco-tourism activity promoting environmental conservation and sustainable community livelihoods”.  A couple of years ago someone had the idea to turn the weird way the locals traveled down the rapids into a profitable activity. All the community benefits from this activity. It’s a bit similar to rafting and lots of fun.

You can check out their facebook page . The price is about 2000 pesos for up to 5 people.

5 – Explore Samar cave systems

Samar Island is rich in caves, and not the one you can visit easily, the one for real caving adventurers. You’ll have to crawl, to get wet and to use ropes most of the time, definitively not for the faint-hearted. Amongst the most popular cave is Langun Gobingob , in Calbiga, one of the biggest in South-East Asia. The cave has 12 chambers and is 7 km deep. It’s also home to blind-crabs, many fish species and thousands of fluttering bats. Nearby you can also check out Jiabong cave , easier to explore and Guinogo-an Cave.

Catbologan and Calbayog are the best places to set up a base. The tourism office can help you arrange for a guide and equipment. permits for some of the caves are required.  There is currently only one agency that specializes in caving in this area: Trexplore .

6 – Biri Island

Biri is famous for its thousand years old rock formations, carved by the strong waves of the Pacific ocean, and is one of the best Samar tourist spots. The rocks are spectacular and the scenery breathtaking. It is truly amazing, a one of the kind destinations. You won’t see anything like it in the Philippines, it’s unique. I could have stayed there all day and just look at it. A must see if you have the opportunity.

There are two main areas where you can see the rock formations, only half a mile from the village. The first one you’ll visit is the Bel-at rock formation , around it, are Puhunan, Macadlaw, and Caranas. The path leading to the rocks starts with a 500 meters boardwalk through the mangrove, then you’ll be able to go around and up Bel-at. On the way back you can enjoy a dip in the crystal clear natural pool.

Next, you’ll visit Magasang and Magsapad rock formations. You’ll cross the sea at low tide, when all the black rocks appear and climb up Magasang, the view, the color, the rock, everything is amazing.

Samar tourist spots itinerary

You can either start from the north, coming from Sorsogon or from the South, coming from Leyte.

Starting from the south, you can visit Sohoton Natural Park and Marabut the same day. The easiest is to stay in Tacloban and do a day trip or stay at the Caluwayan Resort .

On the second day, you can head to Divinubo Island for a night or two.

Next head to Catbologan and go caving.

Your next stop will be Biri Island, where I recommend to stay at least a full day.

If you don’t have much time, you can skip Divinubo and the cave and only visit Marabut, Sohoton, and Biri, which should take you 3 days.

Eastern Samar, one of the underrated tourist destinations in the Philippines , is located in the eastern portion of the island of Samar in the Visayas region, which is more popular for top Philippine destinations like Boracay and Cebu .

The province's east coast overlooks the Philippine Sea, that’s why Eastern Samar has become an emerging Philippine destination for white-sand beaches , surfing, and skimboarding activities. Eastern Samar is now accessible via flights to Borongan Airport. Flag-carrier Philippine Airlines launched its Cebu to Borongan flights on December 19, 2022. Those coming from Manila in the Luzon region can book a connecting flight to Borongan via Cebu.

Previously, travelers accessed Borongan, Eastern Samar, via flights to Tacloban from Manila and had to travel by land for 3-4 hours.

13. Pearl Island (Kantican Island and Marine Sanctuary) 

First on the list of must-visit Eastern Samar tourist spots is Pearl Island, a pearl culture farm situated near Guiuan, Eastern Samar. Also known as Kantican Island and Marine Sanctuary, it is famous for its abundance of various marine life, including abalones, anemones, lobsters, anthias, groupers, corals, and other tropical species. 

Although it was heavily affected by Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, its crystal-clear waters make it an ideal location for swimming, fishing, and scuba diving in the Philippines . Visitors can also stay and watch the sunset at Pearl Island before heading back to the city.

The 49-foot tall Ban-awan Falls in Lawaan is the highest waterfall in the province of Eastern Samar. According to locals, the water supply for Lawaan comes from Ban-awan Falls. Not only is it a source of water, but it is also a great destination for recreational activities such as hiking and swimming.

Like the other majestic waterfalls in the Philippines , the Ban-awan Falls has clear blue waters and stunning rock formations. Amandaraga Falls might not be one of the most famous waterfalls in the Philippines , but this hidden natural wonder in Lawaan, Eastern Samar, deserves praise because of its crystal-clear waters and unique rock formations. Despite having developed routes, the area bound for the falls is still covered by trees, vines, and plants. 

However, the trek to the falls is worth it, especially when hikers finally get to swim and enjoy its clean waters. Before the hike, all visitors are required to contact Lawaan’s Tourism Hub first and ask for a guide. This will ensure that participants will be safe during the activity in the undisturbed tourist attraction.

St. Anthony of Padua Church, locally known as Sulangan Church, is a Diocesan church in Guiuan, Eastern Samar. It is well-known among both residents and pilgrims due to its miraculous stories. The church can be found in the barangay of Sulangan, which is surrounded by white-sand beaches and clear blue waters.

Ando Island is one of the two main islands in Borongan City, Eastern Samar. The third largest island in the Philippines, Samar is blessed with natural attractions such as caves, beaches, waterfalls, and rivers.  One third of the island is actually protected as a natural park called the Samar Island Natural Park .

The island is divided into three provinces: Samar (formerly named Western Samar), Eastern Samar , and Northern Samar .  These provinces, along with Leyte and Biliran , comprise the Eastern Visayas region .

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Samar Island summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Samar Island in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while on Samar Island.

1 | Explore Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge Park

Part of the vast Samar Island Natural Park, Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge Park is a 841-hectare protected natural park which features caves with interesting stalactites and stalagmites, dense forest, limestone formations, subterranean rivers, waterfalls, and a natural stone bridge.  In addition to sightseeing and hiking , you can also kayak at Sohoton River and spelunk at the several caves in the park.

2 | See more caves on the island

Apart from the caves in Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge Park, there are more caves all over the island thus dubbed as the Caving Capital of the country.  Langun-Gobingob Caves , officially called Langun-Calbiga Cave System, is the largest cave system in the Philippines and is the second largest in Asia.  It covers an area of almost 3,000 hectares and the main chamber of the main cave is approximately the size of three football fields.  This cave system is surely an ultimate destination for spelunking enthusiasts.

Other caves on the island are Sulpan Cave with its entrance behind Pinipisakan Falls and Linao Cave which boasts of its crystal clear fresh water hence the name since “linao” or “linaw” is the local term for clear.

3 | Enjoy the beaches

Like other islands in the Philippines, Samar is blessed with beaches of varying charm and beauty.  Malajog Beach, also called Looc Beach, is the most accessible being located just 30 minutes ride from Catbalogan City.  Devoid of white sand, Malajog Beach is not the most attractive to many but is a popular destination for quick getaway among locals.  In Northern Samar, Spice of Life Beach attracts locals and tourists alike for its white sand, bluegreen water, and proximity to the national highway.

4 | Go waterfall-hopping

Do you know that there are at least 10 waterfalls on the island?  Hidden in a dense jungle, the four-tiered Pinipisakan Falls in Samar province is refreshing to the eyes with all the wild ferns, orchids, and mosses seen in the vicinity.  What makes it more interesting is the entrance of Sulpan Cave above the first tier.  Blanca Aurora Falls, also in Samar province, is a favorite among locals as it is a great destination to swim and enjoy the clear water as well as the beautiful scenery.  In Northern Samar, both Busay Falls and Veriato Falls are accessible by road.  Other waterfalls on the island are Bangon Falls, Lulugayan Falls, Ban-awan Falls, Amandaraga Falls, and many others.

5 | Be adventurous at Calbayog Zipline and Malajog Nature Park

Do you ever wonder what it feels like to transfer from one island to another through a zipline?  Well, one place to try it is at Calbayog Zipline and Malajog Nature Park.  The zipline will take you to Daraga islet which is 750 meters away from the zipline launch deck in Malajog Nature Park in Samar mainland.  Before the thrilling zipline ride, you will need to trek a distance of approximately 1 km. through the park to reach the launch deck.  The trek isn’t that difficult though since the trail is cemented and railing have been added in some areas.

6 | Visit the old churches

Being the first island of the Philippines sighted by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and the neighboring island where they first landed, Samar has several churches built as early as 16th to 18th century.  Guiuan Church in Eastern Samar and Capul Church in Northern Samar are both recognized as National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.  Other old churches to feast your eyes on are Basey Church and Laoang Church.

7 | Conquer Blanca Aurora River

If spelunking, zipline, and waterfall-hopping aren’t enough adventures for you, you can canyon the Blanca Aurora River.  This is actually the last part when you explore the Pinipisakan Falls and Sulpan Cave.  The river is an exciting route to go back and leave the dense forest for you will not only ride the currents but will also climb and crawl massive boulders and rocks as well as trek the riverbed when the water is too shallow.  It truly is an adventure you will remember for a lifetime. 

8 | Nearby attractions

Off Samar mainland lies several other attractions that are worth your time and effort.  Lalaguna Mangrove Eco Park is just a 30-minute boat ride away from the Lavezares Port.  Biri Island, with all it’s interesting rock formations, is not too far from Lalaguna Mangrove Eco Park.  San Vicente Island has fine pink sands that makes it more attractive to locals and tourists alike.  Both the islands and the eco park are part of Northern Samar province.  Aside from being the first spot where Magellan landed, Homonhon Island in Eastern Samar is blessed with white sand beaches and crystal clear water.

NOTE: The Sarakiki-Hadang Festival festival occurs annually in Calbayog City from September 1 – 8.

EAT & DRINK

1 | Kamayan Sa Carayman

The number restaurant in Calbayog City, Kamayan sa Carayman serves Filipino favorites in huge portions.  It boasts of using the freshest local ingredients to produce tasty dishes.  The restaurant is known for their chili crab but they also serve crispy pata, sinigang, grilled fish, sisig, and pancit.

2 | Misty Blue Boathouse Restaurant

Overlooking the water, Misty Blue Boathouse Restaurant serves both local and Western dishes in generous portions.  Their pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven is known to be the best in the area.  They also serve pasta and burgers.

3 | La Luna Beach Resort

The restaurant of La Luna Beach Resort is a great place to enjoy various Italian favorites and some Filipino dishes.  Aside from the restaurant’s good food, La Luna Beach Resort has friendly staff and a relaxing ambience where you can enjoy the beach, explore marine life, and watch the sunset.

4 | City Grill

For the freshest seafood in Eastern Samar, you’ll surely love City Grill, one of the best places to eat in Catbalogan City.  Don’t miss their mouth-watering camaron rellenado, kinilaw, and grilled fish.  The restaurant serves pork dishes too so there’s nothing not to love about this restaurant.

KNOWN FOR: Tamalos, a Catbalogan dish made of pork belly in peanut and rice flour sauce wrapped in banana leaves.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling on Samal Island or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

1. Calbayog City

Located at the northern point of Samar province, Calbayog City is rich in natural wonders and history. From the Spanish colonial era until its liberation from the Japanese, the shores of Calbayog bear witness to important events in Philippine history.

Take a cultural tour of the city and visit the Samar Archaeological Museum and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the mother church of Eastern Visayas. Calbayog is home to stunning beaches like Malajog and Bagacay Beaches.

Calbayog City is also home to some of the best delicacies in Samar! The local version of crispy shrimp fritters is comparable to the Japanese tempura! You'll find this crispy snack in the food stalls on Imelda Park in Calbayog city center.

Biri Islands of Northern Samar is, dare we say, the most underrated tourist spot in the Philippines. You'll find unique volcanic rocks and the cleanest waters on the island.

Most of the accommodations and transport within the town come at an affordable rate. Make sure to try local delicacies and the fresh seafood served around Biri Island!

4. Catbalogan City

Another cradle of rich history in Samar, Catbalogan City welcomes its tourists with the warmest smiles! Catbalogan is home to many museums and cultural sites, like the Church of St. Bartholomew and the Samar Heritage Center. The city celebrates the feast of St. Bartholomew and the town's fishermen during August with the Manaragat Festival.

If you're feeling a little adventurous, visit the breathtaking Lobo Cave, only 13 kilometers away from Catbalogan. The limestone formation in the cave is worth the long walk! If you're lucky, you may also witness the breathtaking marine life near the caves. Nearby mussels farms also serve seafood freshly harvested from the river, so don't miss out on that one!

After a long day of hiking, you'll want nothing more than a filling meal. Gladly, Catbalogan City is another haven of local Samar snacks! Tamalos is the city's rendition of rice rolls. Their version comes with a shredded pork belly and creates bursts of flavor when paired with zesty vinegar! You surely won't get enough of this one.

Are you looking for a beach destination like Boracay and Siargao but would appreciate smaller crowds? Look no further than the coastal town of Guiuan, Samar! The town boasts white sand beaches with the clearest of waters. You can visit the charming Sulangan Beach for your next summer escapade!

You wouldn't expect that the quiet town of Guiuian hides a natural wonder as breathtaking as Linao Caves. The clear waters in the cave will remind you of a sparkling sapphire. To get to the cave, you could choose either exploring the dim caves or rappelling down to Linao Cave. Either way, you'll surely enjoy this experience of a lifetime in Samar!

6. Lavezares

A town that dates back to the Spanish colonial era, Lavezares is a charming town that will surprise you with its rich history and culture. Some of the local Waray delicacies you should try when in Lavezares are kinilaw and other freshly caught seafood.

Samar is considered as the third largest island in the country and is divided into three regions: Samar, Northern Samar , and Eastern Samar . Before it became a province itself, Samar was under the jurisdiction of Cebu together with Leyte. This was influenced by Spanish colonial power but later on, separated and became a province in 1865. To describe, Samar province is mountainous. You can see 200-800 meters high hills with steep slopes surrounded by trees. And if you are planning to explore this island, the list of the top tourist spots in Samar below will give you a hint of what to expect from it.

Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Samar, Philippines

Sohoton caves & natural bridge park.

The Natural Bridge Park was established way back 1935. The main purpose of it was to protect exotic rock formations, rainforest, and caves near the Sohoton River. The main reason why it is built is still existing but the park has attracted more eyes until it became one of the tourist spots in Samar. San Juanico Bridge

How to get to Samar

The quickest way to go to Samar is by taking a flight from Manila to Catbalogan or Calbayog from Cebu. From there, you can easily get around the province by taking a van.

You can also take an overnight bus or van from Manila to Samar. If from Cebu, you can take a boat to Calbayog . And, if you come from Davao, you can take a Philtranco Bus and alight in Catbalogan or Calbayog. Alternatively, you can also ride a Bachelor Bus from Davao to Tacloban and take a van from there.

Basey, Samar in One Day : Guide and Itinerary

It is not pronounced as Ba-sey.

That’s the first thing you have to know when you travel to this town in Samar known for its caves, underground rivers and diverse ecosystem. There is no “ey” sound in the Waray dialect. I should know because I am waray myself. I was born in Northern Samar.

The correct pronunciation is Basai or Basay. The word Basey or its mispronunciation was propagated by American soldiers based in the town during the American colonial period.

Now that I’ve made that clear to you,  let’s go to the reasons why you should visit this town in Samar. If you have limited time, no worries you can explore some amazing sites even for just a day. We did that the last time I was there as part of the fam tour by Tourism Promotions Board of DOT.

Basey Church or St. Michael Archangel Church

Our first stop. Just a few kilometers from San Juanico Bridge , we arrived at this centuries-old church that I must say very well-preserved and still beautiful.

Remember that Basey was one of the most devastated towns during typhoon Yolanda, but now, the church is at its finest again. Residents whom I had the chance to talk to, said that the church has become a refuge for some residents during the super typhoon. It is located on a hill, residents ran to the church during the time of storm surge.

Basey church has a rich history, but now it has more significance for residents, especially those who were saved during the devastating storm.

This was built during the 17th century. Imagine that! And with its form and look, this is considered as one of the most beautifully preserved churches in Samar.

I immediately noticed the murals when we got inside the church. The patron saint if our church in Laoang, Northern Samar is also St Michael Archangel, so this church has some kinda’ connection with me, the mural painting of the patron saint, the stained glass and the old feel of the church in way made me imagine and feel the stories of the past.

There was a young woman acting as tour guide, explaining the history of the church. I enjoyed listening to her stories but there was a time that I experienced some info overload with the dates, especially when I continuously hear 17th century, 1768, 1795 and a lot more. Haha!

So I turned to “Konsehala.” A cheerful woman in blue blouse who walked with me towards the other parts of the church. She told me her stories when she was just a young girl and how the church played a significant role in their faith and Catholicism.

Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge

A few more minutes of travel and a little trek, we hopped on a motorboat exploring the Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park.

Sohoton National Park is a protected area about 841 hectares. This is just a small portion of the Samar Island National Park covering the 3 provinces namely Northern Samar , Eastern Samar and Samar (formerly Western Samar). The entire area is 455,700 hectares, home of the various wildlife, rivers and cave connections.

One of the most exciting part was the Cave Adventure. There are cave connections in Sohoton but still a lot are yet to be explored.

That day, we explored the most popular cave, the Panhulugan Cave.

Richard, our guide said that once we get inside, just enjoy the view and let go of your imagination. And we did, aside from stalagmites and stalactites, there were formations that indeed needed some creative imagination.

More fun adventures when we traveled to the natural bridge through kayaking. This natural bridge is a famous spot that you should definitely visit once you’re in Basey.

Women Weavers of Saob Cave, Basiao

You might be spending too much time in Sohoton Caves because of there are lots of things to do and enjoy there. But another worthy visit in Samar is the Saob Cave in Brgy. Basiao where you can find the women weavers of the high quality and colorful “banig.”

According to the locals, Saob Cave’s cooler temperature is perfect to preserve the raw materials in making the banig, so most of the weavers can be found there.

Basey holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s longest mat or banig! And the much awaited festival in Basey is Banigan Festival every September of the year.

Basey or Basay comes from the Waray word “mabaisai” which means beautiful.

This town in Samar is complete with  adventure, culture and nature. It is only a matter of time for you to realize that Basey truly suits its name. It is time for Samar. It is time to travel to Eastern Visayas.

Basey Samar Hotels?

Most of the travelers in Basey, Samar usually stay in hotels and accommodation in Tacloban. There are still very limited hotels and resorts in Basey.

When we were there in Tacloban, we stayed in Hotel Alejandro and Tacloban Plaza Hotel . Both are recommended!

How to get to Basey?

Book a flight to Tacloban. If you plan to go straight to Basey, there are vans at the airport that you can rent for a day. Try to get the best rate for a day tour. It is much affordable if you travel with group.

Via Public Transport

From Tacloban New Bus Terminal there are jeepneys or vans going to Basey, Samar. Travel time is about 40 minutes.

The drop-off point is the Basey Tourism Office near the wharf and market. The staff there will assist you with regards to transportation and other services going to these tourist spots.

10 Places to Visit in Biri Islands and Samar + Things To Do

Biri is one of my all-time favorite “off the beaten path” adventures in the Philippines. Facing the Pacific Ocean, this remote island is home to awe-inspiring rock formations carved over time by nature. Scramble up to one of the peaks for an awe-inspiring view of raging sea waves crashing over the rugged landscape.

The nearest airport to Biri is Catarman Airport, which serves direct flights from Clark. From Catarman Airport, you’ll first need to go on a 1-hour land trip to Lavezares Port, the main jump-off point to Biri Islands. From Lavezares Port, hop on a ferry to Biri. The sea crossing takes around 45 minutes. Alternatively, it’s possible to reach Biri from Calbayog Airport or Tacloban Airport. Travel time by land from Tacloban to Lavezares is 6 hours.

How to get around Samar Island

1.By Habal-Habal or known as Motorcycle

Good for couples. It is much better if you can drive it yourself.

It can accommodate up to 10-13 passengers . If you want to rent tour the island using the van, it will cost you around Php 2000-2500 or $40-50 per day .

3. By Multi-Cab

It can accommodate up to 8-10 passengers . If you want to rent and tour the island using the multi-cab, it will costs you around Php 1500-1700 or $30-34 per day .

• The Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge Park is an 841-hectare protected natural area and tourist attraction inside the Samar Island Natural Park. The natural park includes caverns, subterranean rivers, waterfalls, limestone structures, dense vegetation, and a natural stone bridge.

• Just a few meters from the Sohoton Cave, you can already reach the Sohoton River by kayaking. Talk about hitting two birds with one stone!

• The centuries-old St. Michal the Arcangel Church, set on a hill, is one of Samar’s most beautifully maintained churches. The bell tower on the church’s left wing is one of its most notable features.

• Saob Cave in Basey, Samar, was formerly home to hundreds of banig weavers, known as paraglara in the local dialect. Weavers, primarily women, would throng the whole length of the cave’s vast chasm, and the walls would reverberate with laughing, loose conversation, and the rustle of dry grass under delicate fingers.

• Mt. Carmel Chapel in Barangay Buscada is located about 1 kilometer away from the present church. It is the parent church of Tacloban (in Leyte) and the origin of the Tacloban’s revered Sto. Niño icon. Tacloban’s creation as a barrio of Basey dates back to the 1770s. This church, built in 1845, has a Jesuit façade with layers of tombs for walls made out of coral stone blocks. It is the starting point for the historical exchange of images between Basey and Tacloban City.

• Balantak Falls is located in Rawis, a barangay next to Sohoton. This waterfall is made up of three water falls. You may also hike to the falls. Its chilly and flowing waters are ideal for soothing and massaging fatigued muscles. Going to Balance Falls takes time, but when you see the water falls, you will realize that it was well worth the effort. You can also ride a habal-habal to Balantak.

• The Bacubac beach is another beach located near Basey, Samar. The Basaynon are only familiar with this beach since it is so lovely. Every Basaynon flocks to this beach, especially on important events like the new year, Christmas, and fiestas. This is because access to the beach is free during these times. This beach’s large waves contribute to its charm. This beach also has a floating cottage.

• Native Delicacies in Basey Binagol are made from a root crop that is similar to “cassava” and locally called “talyan” Binagol is a mixture of flour, sugar, milk and packed on top of a halved coconut shell and covered with banana leaves.
• Moron is a sweet delicacy this is soft and sticky also wrapped in banana leaf and is a bit oily.
• Suman-latik is made from glutinous rice, coconut milk, brown sugar also wrapped in banana leaf suman also called “budbod” and latik reffering coconut syrup above the suman.
• Bukayo this delicacy is very sweet and made from coconut and a mixture of brown and white sugar with strips this is for people who love sweet desserts.

9. Buy the Native Tikog as a Present!

• Basey Samar is also known for its colorful and unique “tikog” handicrafts. This tikog is a native red plant used as a raw material for mat weaving. This tikog can be used as bags, pouches, storage boxes, slippers, and other crafts. Women are the one who produces this kind of handicraft. These mats are made by some women in the barangay.

• The town of Basey holds its town fiesta on September 28 and 29, every year. Numerous events are held to mark the fiesta, including the annual civic parade. In Basey, various organizations and barangays participate in this procession. The drum and bugle corps from the various Basey-area schools also plays in the background. The Kawayan and Banigan festival is held every 28th day, or the despiras.
• The fiesta, which takes place on the 29th day, is when everyone in Basey prepares food, dessert, and drinks like “tuba.”

• Visit on weekdays to avoid the crowd.
• Bring water so that you can’t be dehydrated.
