History of the Vienna State Opera

Geschichte der Wiener Staatsoper

The Vienna State Opera was built between 1863 and 1896 as the successor to the Vienna Court Opera. It was the first house on what was then the new ring road.

The building was designed by the Viennese architects August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. At the time, however, the building was heavily criticized by the public and was considered an architectural disaster, leading the sensitive van der Nüll to commit suicide. Just two months later, Sicardsburg died of a heart attack, meaning that both architects did not live to see the completion of the building.

Inauguration with Don Giovanni by Mozart

The State Opera was inaugurated on May 25, 1869 with a premiere of Mozart's "Don Giovanni", in which the imperial couple Franz Joseph and Sisi also took part. The opera served as the Imperial Court Theater until the end of the monarchy in 1918.

During the National Socialist era, there were numerous performance bans and members of the house were persecuted, expelled and murdered. On March 12, 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War, the building was severely damaged by bombardment. The opera house was rebuilt from 1948 to 1955.

The Vienna State Opera has borne its current name since its glamorous reopening on November 5, 1955 with Beethoven's "Fidelio". Over the years, the Vienna State has been the scene of countless premieres and famous performances, in which stars of the opera scene regularly appear.

Today, the Vienna State Opera is one of the leading and most important opera houses in the world and a cultural landmark in Vienna.

The State Opera House

Arch-filled front of the Staatsoper

(The main entrance)

The front of the Staatsoper looks out onto Vienna’s Ringstraßen boulevard, but relatively wide streets and open spaces surround the other sides, too.

This standalone location gives the building a notable presence in Vienna’s city centre, like a grand diva towering above the orchestra pit. I often use it as a reference to guide people to other locations.

This presence feels entirely deserved given the Staatsoper’s status in the world of opera, invariably appearing in all sorts of top 10 lists.

A brief history

The freshly-built Staatsoper in the late 19th century

(The freshly-built Staatsoper in the late 19th century. Photo courtesy of the Rijksmuseum. See more historical photos of Vienna )

The opera house greeted its first visitors in 1869 as the Hofoper (court opera) for a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni .

Like many of Vienna’s landmarks, the building owes its existence to the removal of the city fortifications in the mid-19th century and the opening up for construction of the park-like Glacis area that kept the suburbs at bay.

Architect August von Sicardsburg (1813-1868) designed the basic Renaissance-style building, while Eduard van der Nüll (1812-1868) took care of the interior décor.

The public reaction at the time was broadly negative, and this criticism likely contributed to the untimely death of both architects before the official opening.

(Staatsoper auditorium photographed around 1940 by Martin Gerlach jun., Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 211273, reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)

However, a newspaper article just days after that opening offered a robust defence of the two mens’ work, blaming Viennese pessimism and the population’s love of mockery and grumbling for the bad press. It stated (my translation):

The interior is such that the new opera house is perhaps the most beautiful theatre in Europe.

Unfortunately, the original building failed to escape the ravages of WWII, with allied bombs destroying large parts of it in 1945.

The rebuilding work took around ten years, with Beethoven’s Fidelio welcoming audiences at the reopening in 1955.

Today’s opera house looks especially fantastic at night (see the photo later in the article). The interior is, as that 19th-century writer remarked, quite gorgeous.

If you don’t attend a performance, I recommend the in-house tour that takes you through the building and out behind the surprisingly large stage. Some areas are actually fully original in their historical glory; the wonderful main staircase, for example, survived the aerial bombing intact.

Callas and Cruise

As noted earlier, the Staatsoper sits at the high table of world culture. The playing schedule varies daily, so you won”t find continuous runs of any one particular production.

Puccini’s Madame Butterfly might pine for a lost lover on Thursday, Strauss’s Salome do the dance of the seven veils on Friday, and Bottom make an ass of himself on Saturday in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream .

(Not to mention the occasional ballet thrown in for good measure: the Staatsoper opera also houses the Vienna State Ballet.)

Staatsoper at night

(The raised area next to the Albertina Museum make an ideal spot for taking photos of the Staatsoper)

Around 200 stagehands, vast numbers of costumes, swathes of scenery, and a whole lot of storage space combine to ensure sets can be switched in and out quickly, as required by the changing performance.

A permanent in-house ensemble also helps make such a dynamic schedule possible.

Guest performers, conductors, directors and others from the crème de la crème of the operatic universe complement the Staatsoper’s own team for selected productions.

Claudio Abbado, Luciano Pavarotti , Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, Joan Sutherland, Anna Netrebko, Montserrat Caballé, Plácido Domingo, Gustav Mahler, José Carreras, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Riccardo Muti, and Herbert von Karajan are just some of the names who’ve worked at (or with) the Staatsoper.

Wide shot of the Staatsoper

(Unusually traffic-free side view from the road)

It’s not just the prestigious operatic history that contributes to the opera house’s fame.

The Staatsoper hosts the world-famous Opernball (Vienna Opera Ball) in February , for example, and it even played a central role in one of the Mission Impossible films.

You can spot the building in other productions, too, like the Jack Ryan TV series , the The Recruit TV series , or the Sachertorte and The Woman in Gold movies.

So if anyone asks you what connects Callas and Cruise, you now have the answer.

Tickets & alternatives

See my advice on getting tickets , including the inexpensive option of standing space, where a night at the opera can cost little more than a morning coffee.

Incidentally, every seat and standing place inside has its own small screen displaying subtitles for the opera in question, with a choice of languages (including English and German, of course).

Standing ticket office sign at the Staatsoper

(This way for cheap standing tickets)

Aside from a ticket or tour, you have a couple of other ways to experience the joys of the building or Viennese opera in general:

  • The Staatsoper offers a live streaming service with broadcasts of occasional performances or events
  • Google features the Vienna State Opera in its Arts & Culture project
  • Many historical venues put on special visitor-friendly concerts featuring better-known light classical music and select operatic pieces
  • Vienna has two other major opera houses: the Volksoper and the Theater an der Wien

How to get to the Staatsoper

You probably pass the Staatsoper on your travels around the city centre; it actually marks the start of my suggested walking tour of Vienna.

The building’s a short walk from the pedestrianised centre: just wander up Kärntner Straße from Stephansdom cathedral, for example. If you want accommodation close by, then here are some suggestions.

Subway: the Oper exit from Karlsplatz subway station drops you pretty much at the doorstep. Karlsplatz is on the U1, U2 and U4 subway lines. Alternatively, the very central Stephansplatz station (U1 and U3) is just up the road, too.

Tram/bus: there’s a tram stop opposite (Oper/Karlsplatz), served by the 1, 2, D, 71 and 62 trams. Or take the 2A city centre bus to Kärntner Straße.

Vienna state opera house – history information, vienna state opera events, vienna opera ball – grand chopin event, johann strauss attractions, related articles.

The city of Vienna in Austria is known all over the world for a lot of things but mostly for its classical music. You’ve heard of the Vienna opera house.

It isn’t a big surprise, though, as this is the city where the famous composer and musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born and made a name for himself through his music.

Inside of Vienna Opera House

One of the most renowned institutions in this Austrian capital which has become a preferred venue for musical and theatrical performances is the Vienna State Opera or the Wiener Staatsoper.

This opera house was built in the middle of the 19th century and was previously known as the Vienna Court Opera. According to historical records, this structure was the first major building constructed on Wiener Ringstraße . Construction of this majestic opera house took eight years from 1861 to 1869.

Although slightly damaged during the late part of the Second World War, much of the building’s major sections were spared. It was later fully restored to its original grandeur in the same location courtesy of Ernst Kolb and Udo Illig, both restoration experts.

Erich Boltenstern also contributed to the restoration design after winning the architectural contest called for by Austrian Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl.

Eventually, the Vienna State Opera produced the Wiener Mozart-Ensemble in 1945 which became well known for its singing and playing of musical instruments. Two years later in 1947, the ensemble was already performing as a guest at London’s Royal Opera House.  Today, the Vienna Philharmonic normally recruits new members from the Vienna State Opera’s orchestra.

Vienna Opera Schedule

In terms of performances, Vienna state opera is one of the busiest operas houses in the world. The cost of operations was estimated at 100 million Euros in 2008 alone. More than half of the cost is shouldered by the state government.

Each year, the Vienna opera house produces from 50 to 60 operas involving 200 performances.  In addition, performance is scheduled almost every day for 10 months of each year.

Approximately a thousand people are currently working for the opera house. Half of the budget for the building’s operation is subsidized by the government.

Vienna opera house exterior

One famous performance in the city is Parsifal by Richard Wagner. An opera in three acts, it is said to be Wagner’s last completed work. It was conceived in April 1857 but was finished only after 25 years.

In 2013, it was performed throughout the year in honor of Wagner’s 200th birth anniversary. Mr. Welser-Most is at the helm of the orchestra. The Staatsoper orchestra often receives rave reviews for its excellent performance every time despite limited rehearsal schedule.

So far, there have been four versions noted in four different cities and a mini-festival that ended with a performance at the Staatsoper. The first production of Parsifal was way back in 1882 in celebration of the second Bayreuth Festival. For two decades, the festival monopolized the Parsifal productions.

In the 2012-2013 season, the Wiener Staatsoper announced a total of 53 operas. All are world-class productions worth every visitor’s time and money.

Vienna opera ball

Vienna’s main opera ball (the Wiener Opernball) was all set for a grand celebration of Frederic Chopin’s 200th birth anniversary. The 54th edition of this highly glamorous ball took a place in 2010. At the capital’s State Opera House featured musical and ballet tributes for the Polish composer.

For this grand exclusive event, there was a medley of opera arias and a show of elegant ballgowns. Organizers invited top performers and famous celebrities to the opening of the yearly waltz fest in the Austrian capital.

Chopin’s Scherzo Nr. 1 was interpreted through a performance by the Vienna and Warsaw ballet groups. According to choreographer Giogio Madia, this piece is an important link between Chopin and Vienna. That’s because it was conceived by the renowned Polish composer in the Austrian city.

Two performances made their debut in the Vienna Opera Ball. These included a piano performance of Chopin’s Scherzo Nr. 1 by the 1985 Chopin prize winner Krzysztof Jablonski and a ballet performance of the Minute Waltz by students of the Vienna Opera Ballet.

Vienna Opera House Tickets & When it All Started?

The Vienna Opera Ball is a major event participated in by the high society from different parts of the world. It started its live broadcast in 2000. And it continues to attract millions of viewers in Austria as well as around the world.

Additional highlights were a short medley of 14 opera arias performed by the Vienna Opera House’s top in-house soloists.

These arias are:

  • Carmen by Bizet
  • La Boheme by Puccini
  • Die Fledermaus by Richard Strauss

Musical works by Tchaikovsky, Rossini, Lehar, Verdi and Wagner. On a lighter note, Lindsay Lohan was there (the Vienna Opera Ball) as well. She was invited (all expenses and a hefty fee paid) by Austrian real estate developer Richard Lugner. Lugner invites famous or not so famous starlets each year to go to the Ball with him.

Other actresses Robert Lugner has escorted include Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch, Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson. Also, there were Andie MacDowell, Nicollette Sheridan, Carmen Electra, Grace Jones, and Dita Von Teese.

If you had the money, this is one grand event you shouldn’t miss to attend. The ticket price was 230 euros while a seat at the top box cost up to 17,000 euros.

But don’t worry, today you can attend an opera night for much less. You can go for a beautiful Mozart and Strauss concert for around €55 . But you can also opt for a classical opera with musical revivals of Strauss and Mozart and an optional dinner ( ticket here ). Share this experience with us if you are the lucky one to see a famous concert in Vienna!

The Strauss waltz is one of Vienna’s most popular musical compositions. Johann Strauss is the man behind this world renowned classical music. And although he may no longer be around, his music and presence continue to live on in the Austrian capital.

The Strauss family considered themselves 100 percent Viennese. It was Johann Strauss, the senior, who was responsible for developing the waltz together with his contemporaries.

Not many people know, however, that it was his son (the junior) who made efforts to sustain the musical form. As such, people all over the world continue to play the waltz until today.

It was the younger Johann Strauss who composed the world famous Blue Danube waltz . For those visiting Vienna particularly classical music fans, there are various places worth visiting that will remind you of Johann Strauss. The gilded statue of the musician in the Stadtpark or the Vienna City Park on Ringstrasse should not be missed.

Unveiled in June 1921, the statue portrays the composed in a standing position while playing with his violin. Also at the end of the park is the Kursalon where Strauss used to perform. The venue still holds concerts until today.

The Strauss apartment near the city center is another must-see venue. The place has been turned into a small museum where you can learn more about the Strauss family.

Or you can visit the graves of both the Strauss father and son which can be found in the central cemetery.  You may also check out the city theaters where operettas are performed. Who knows, you might have the opportunity to find Strauss’ music being played there.

The Johan Strauss Ball

Vienna’s ball season does not only feature one major ball event. There are many of them targetted at different types of audiences.

One particular ball that honors a well known Viennese musician is the Johan Strauss Ball. This is normally held at the Kursalon Wien, one of the most exclusive buildings in the Austrian capital.

Established between 1865 and 1867, this Italian Renaissance style is where the Strauss brothers marked their major successes. The waltz ambiance was established here through the holding of dances and promenade concerts.

In 2014, the Johann Strauss Ball took place a day after Valentine’s Day. Four large rooms at the Kursalon Wien accommodated all the guests expected to enjoy an elegant evening as they are serenaded by the Viennese waltz.

Dinner was at the main ball opening scheduled at 9 p.m. After the opening, classical dance music from the past and present was followed by a dance workshop presented by professionals.

Johann Strauss is considered as the waltz king. Born in 1925, he is most known for his light classical music. Together with his brothers Joseph and Eduard, they conquered the Kursalon Wien and achieved their triumphs there.

Unknown to some, Strauss is also behind other dance forms apart from the waltz.

His other compositions are:

He later discovered the operetta through his connection with Jacques Offenbach.

Vienna’s Opera Ball is the most prestigious, elite and well known internationally of all balls in the Austrian capital. Supported by millionaire mall developer Richard Lugner of Vienna, it attracts the high society every year and that includes celebrities in Hollywood and Europe.

In 2014, Lugner invited reality star Kim Kardashian as the Opera Ball’s guest of honor. Previous celebrities who have graced this international event include singer Geri Halliwell of the former Spice Girls, actress Pamela Anderson and actor Larry Hagman.

But more than the celebrities, many young ladies in Vienna, Europe, and other countries dream of taking part in this elite event. They are, after all, the stars of this prestigious event.

The Opera Ball usually opens with the introduction of 144 debutants and debutantes. They undergo weeks of intensive rehearsals for a dance performance that takes only up to four minutes. But since the event attracts a massive audience on TV in Vienna as well as in other countries, they need to perfect their dance.

This particular ball has been a tradition in Vienna and one that is accepted around the world. It is considered a rite of passage for modern debutante. To take part in it as a guest, however, requires some investment as a regular ticket can cost from 250 Euros to 1,850 Euros.

Behind Vienna's scene: the best backstage tours

Vienna is considered to be a city of stages – and not without reason. Every year, world-famous operas, concerts, musicals and plays cast millions of visitors from around the world under their spell. There is plenty to discover not only in front of but also behind the scenes of Vienna's most famous cultural venues.

In Vienna's many art and cultural institutions, it is even worth taking a peek behind the scenes. Fancy the unique opportunity to look over the shoulders of the biggest creators of art and music in Vienna? These exciting backstage guided tours make it possible.

Note: The tour dates may vary and are subject to change at short notice. If you would like to book a guided tour, please check the relevant website in advance.

Backstage tour at ORF

In everyday Viennese life, most roads lead past the television and radio broadcasters of Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF). Whether Eurovision Song Contest, New Year's Concert or Ski Alpin: the ORF program, with its four TV stations, often produces memorable moments, excitement, and sometimes also tears of joy. A tour behind the scenes at ORF gives you the possibility to experience Austria's largest media not only in front of TVs and radios. The guided tours through the backstage areas of the TV studios are suitable for everyone (including children) and offer all sorts of interesting information. They are held in German as well as in English or Italian on request.

Behind the musical scenes at the Ronacher

The Ronacher has a unique story to tell: burned down in 1884, twelve years after its construction, rebuilt, and used as a temporary home for the Burgtheater after the Second World War, the Ronacher has now established itself as a permanent feature on the musicals scene . Which makes a backstage tour all the more exciting, because it not only presents historical facts but also gives exciting insights into the world of the musical. The guided tour lasts about an hour and is offered in German only.

Between splendor and prestige: the Burgtheater

As Austria's national theater, the Burgtheater is not only one of the largest and oldest spoken theaters in the Europe but is also considered to be the richest repertoire theater in the world. The prestigious building, whose stairways are adorned with ceiling paintings by Gustav Klimt and Ernst Klimt, is especially impressive thanks to its splendid architecture. The guided tours of the Burgtheater also focus mainly on these areas. The backstage tours are held in German and some in English with a written summary in French, Italian, Spanish, Russian or Japanese.

A house full of music

The Musikverein , home to the annual New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic , enchants countless music fans at home on TV and on location in one of the most beautiful and acoustically brilliant concert halls in the world. This magnificent building, which was constructed based on models from Greek antiquity, is located not far from Schwarzenbergplatz in downtown Vienna. You can get an idea of the impressive architecture and unique acoustics of the Musikverein for yourself on a backstage tour from Monday to Saturday – in German and English as standard.

From ballet to Opera Ball

With almost 60 different operas and 21 ballets on around 300 days per season, the Vienna State Opera is one of the best-known opera houses in the world. A guided tour of the State Opera is an absolute must both for locals and for guests from around the world. A 40-minute tour will take you right behind the scenes of the magnificent opera building, where a total of 950 people ensure everything runs smoothly every day. The backstage guided tours are held in German, English, and Spanish – and by arrangement also in Italian, French, Russian, and Japanese. Dates, information, and ways to register for the backstage tour can be found on the Vienna State Opera website.

6 essential vienna experiences.

The City of Dreams is a real delight.

If Vienna isn’t on your must-see European city list, it should be. Austria’s capital city is a sensorial feast on the Danube River. Stunning ancient architecture lines the streets; classical music concerts provide a soundtrack; Habsburg-era palaces lend the city a noble air; and eating well, from simple sausage stalls to top restaurants, is a given.

In fact, Vienna has endless must-see sites and must-try foods, but we’ve narrowed it down to six essential experiences.

The city’s cultural hub.

Get Cultured

As the capital of the Habsburg Empire and, later, the center of European high society during the city’s Golden Age, Vienna is a culture aficionado’s playground. For example, The Vienna Museum Quarter is one of Europe’s most extensive museum complexes, with 60 cultural institutions that offer something for everyone. On the music front, the many famous composers who worked in Vienna, like Mozart and Beethoven, left an enduring legacy. You can find classical music concerts almost every night of the week, but the most beloved venue is the Vienna State Opera House .

After a four-year renovation, the Wien Museum reopened in late 2023 and explores the city’s history. The museum exhibits iconic memorabilia, like a floating 1.5-ton whale sculpture that was once on the roof of a now-shuttered historical restaurant.

If quirky museums are more your beat, don’t miss The Third Man Museum , a treasure trove of artifacts from the 1949 film starring Orson Welles that was shot in Vienna. From snow globes to other globes , Vienna’s collection of wonderfully weird museums is impressive.

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Eat Your Vegetables

Meat lovers will feel right at home in Vienna. Relish a käsekrainer , the city’s legendary cheese-filled sausage, at a traditional stand after an opera night. Or, sample Viennese cuisine’s star, the wiener schnitzel — a very thin, breaded and fried veal cutlet — at a traditional bistro (or gauthaus ) like Rebhuhn .

In contrast, Vienna’s recent reputation as Europe’s most vegetarian-friendly city is no rumor. The most recognized vegetarian restaurant is TIAN , where chef Paul Ivić turns plants into art. There are plenty of farm-to-table restaurants where vegetables are the star, such as Meinklang Hofladen . Just outside of the city, Meinklang Hofladen serves a three-course lunch featuring produce harvested from the farm that’s wonderfully paired with the restaurant’s own inventive biodynamic wines.

Try Urban Wine Tasting

Although Vienna might not be Europe’s best-known wine destination, the city does have two unique claims to fame: it’s the only capital in the world to produce substantial quantities of wine within its city limits and it creates its own specialty wine, Gemischter Satz. A blend of up to 20 grape varietals, this white wine made for ages as “pub wine” is having a moment, as are locals’ thirst for natural pours. Plenty of progressive restaurants in Vienna, like MAST , which two sommeliers own, keep Gemischter Satz. Head to a new natural wine bar in the seventh district, R&Bar, to try it and many other exciting Viennese options.

Also unique to the region are heurigers (or wine taverns), where young wines are served with hearty Austrian eats. Within a 15-minute drive from the city center, Der Hirt is a favorite heuriger among locals for its various pours and incredible views. Perched on a steep hillside overlooking vineyards and the Danube River, Der Hirt serves elevated Austrian fare and delightful young wines from local grape varieties. If you visit in September or October, don’t miss sturm, a delicious, slightly fermented, low-alcohol grape juice. During sturm season, this bubbly grape juice is also available in many restaurants and pubs around town.

Go to a Ball

Mingle with local celebrities and foreign dignitaries at one of the 400-plus balls hosted annually from January to March throughout the city during the Viennese Ball Season. This glamorous tradition dates back to the 18th century and allows you to break out your waltzing and dress up in formal wear. (Don’t worry, no Bridgertown -style costumes are needed.)

Even if you can’t score tickets to the Vienna Opera Ball — the event of the season since 1877 — the Philharmonic Ball and the Blumenball are excellent alternatives. If you haven’t three-stepped since elementary music, plenty of dance schools offer speedy waltz lessons before the big event.

Freud’s Waiting Room.

Tour Sigmund Freud’s Home

Recently renovated and expanded, the Sigmund Freud Museum — the home and office of the famous psychotherapist for 47 years — offers insights into Freud’s inner sanctum. (Fun fact: Vienna’s nickname, “The City of Dreams,” honors him.) Highlights of the Sigmund Freud Museum’s interactive tour include the office where he saw patients, video and audio recordings of Freud and hand-written letters to colleagues and family. The museum also dedicates a substantial footprint to Anna Freud, his youngest daughter and renowned psychoanalyst.

In the same Serviten Quarter neighborhood a few blocks over, you can stroll the grounds of the Liechtenstein Garden Palace . Prince Adam of Liechtenstein’s incredible Baroque- and Renaissance-era art collection inside is available to see by appointment only. Also nearby is Vienna’s most Instagrammed staircase, the Strudlhofstiege .

Get Spoiled by Grandma

Vienna’s café culture plays a vital role among locals, so much so that it has been listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2011. Expect to stay awhile, read the paper and even play pool at historic 19th-century-era cafés (they resemble American diners but are elevated in design and offerings) like Cafe Ritter or Cafe Sperl . But a relatively new and hip address to hit the scene is Vollpension . Serving pastries baked by grandmothers (and grandfathers, too) that use family recipes, Vollpension feels like your grandma’s living room, complete with doilies, knickknacks, antique furniture and framed family photos. The café’s greater mission is to facilitate connection between the generations and combat elderly poverty.

Another very trendy spot for walk-up coffee is Fenster Cafe . Don’t miss the Fensterccino, a photogenic cappuccino served in a waffle cone.

Hotel Sacher Wien’s Junior Suite.

Where to Stay

Vienna is easy to get around, either by foot or by complimentary city bike. Still, you may want to book a hotel in the neighborhood you plan to spend the most time in. Located in the city center across the street from the opera house, Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Hotel Sacher Wien delivers palatial vibes with modern comforts . It’s also home to the famous Sacher torte, a layered chocolate cake with apricot jam.

Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Hotel Sans Souci Wien is in the trendy Arts District, across the street from the aforementioned Vienna Museum Quarter, that offers an ideal mix of historical and contemporary design.

Also in the city center, The Amauris is a stylish new boutique hotel whose staff goes above and beyond to make you happy.
