The world-famous opera house promises the finest musical enjoyment with a diverse program consisting of around 60 different operas and ballets per season.

Since it opened around 150 years ago, the Vienna State Opera has offered breathtaking musical performances with musical greats from Mozart to Pavarotti. The Vienna Philharmonic, a world-class orchestra, makes a significant contribution to the fact that musical entertainment is presented at the highest level in the breathtaking ambience of the State Opera.

The Vienna State Opera is also known for the legendary Vienna Opera Ball, which takes place here every year and the tickets for which are usually sold out long in advance. The tickets for the performances also sell out quickly, so it is advisable to book them as early as possible.

Even those who are not great fans of classical music should pay a visit to the Vienna State Opera. The Vienna State Opera is considered the opera house with the largest repertoire. Typical Austrian operas such as those by Mozart are often performed. But also internationally known works are regularly brought to the stage.

Ballet works are also part of the repertoire of the magnificent opera house.

How Do I Get to the Vienna State Opera?

The State Opera is located on the famous Ringstrasse in Vienna's 1st district.

The best way to get to the State Opera is from the Karlsplatz underground station, which you can take the U1, U2 and U4 to.

Alternatively, you can also take the 59A bus or the 1, 2, D, 62 or 71 tram to the Opernring station.

State Opera Cafe

Inside the State Opera is the Café Oper Wien, which it claims is “Vienna’s most musical café”.

The traditional coffee house with Viennese charm is a popular meeting place for music lovers, opera artists and visitors to the opera. With its traditional Viennese coffeehouse ambience and quickly served delicacies, the café attracts with enjoyment and cosiness, especially during the breaks in the performances.

History of the Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera was built between 1863 and 1896 as the successor to the Vienna Court Opera. It was the first house on what was then the new ring road.

The building was designed by the Viennese architects August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. At the time, however, the building was heavily criticized by the public and was considered an architectural disaster, leading the sensitive van der Nüll to commit suicide. Just two months later, Sicardsburg died of a heart attack, meaning that both architects did not live to see the completion of the building.

Inauguration with Don Giovanni by Mozart

The State Opera was inaugurated on May 25, 1869 with a premiere of Mozart's "Don Giovanni", in which the imperial couple Franz Joseph and Sisi also took part. The opera served as the Imperial Court Theater until the end of the monarchy in 1918. 

During the National Socialist era, there were numerous performance bans and members of the house were persecuted, expelled and murdered. On March 12, 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War, the building was severely damaged by bombardment. The opera house was rebuilt from 1948 to 1955.

The Vienna State Opera has borne its current name since its glamorous reopening on November 5, 1955 with Beethoven's "Fidelio". Over the years, the Vienna State has been the scene of countless premieres and famous performances, in which stars of the opera scene regularly appear.

Today, the Vienna State Opera is one of the leading and most important opera houses in the world and a cultural landmark in Vienna.

Visiting Vienna

State Opera House tour

Anyone wishing to get a good look around Vienna’s State Opera House has two choices. Either buy a ticket for a performance ( cheaper than you think ) or take an in-house guided tour.

The advantage of the tour is you see one or two fascinating places that the opera goer cannot access.

Go inside the Staatsoper

(Pointing you in the right direction)

The State Opera House ( Staatsoper ) is a grand old building that dominates one part of Vienna’s mighty Ringstrassen boulevard.

The list of famous opera stars who performed here might be considered Wagnerian in length. One of them – Placido Domingo – once received an 80-minute standing ovation for his Othello (a world record).

That Domingo anecdote is one of many you might hear on a guided tour from the Staatsoper’s staff, as you drift through an institution dripping in history and decor.

All is not quite as it seems, however.

Although constructed in 1869, WWII bomb damage wreaked havoc on the building. So today’s State Opera House is part-original, part-restored and part-modern, all of which you see on the tour through foyers, staircases, intermission rooms, and beyond.

Personal highlights for me on the tour I went on were…

• The Teesalon : the average opera goer typically misses this sneak peek into the former private chamber of Emperor Franz Joseph

Large wooden doors lead almost directly to the Emperor’s box and the room has more decorative elements that you can shake a libretto at.

• The Schwindfoyer : a beautifully-restored intermission room dating back to the building’s construction

150-year-old chandeliers light the room, with the walls and ceilings graced by gilt floral decoration, frescoes, and a series of composer busts: Rossini, Mozart, Gluck, Schubert, Haydn, Beethoven, and others who knew their way around sheet music.

• The auditorium and stage : now the technology takes its turn to impress

We slipped around the side of the stage to see just how incredibly large it is and just how many beams, escalators, ropes and mysterious technologies are there to shift scenes and setups when each evening brings a different opera.

We were lucky enough to witness the stagehands preparing for the next performance: ancient Egypt (Aida) gradually replaced 16th-century Cyprus (Otello).

• The Mahlersaal : an intermission room rebuilt in the 1950s, with tapestries portraying scenes from Mozart’s Magic Flute

In one unobtrusive corner sits a travelling piano that belonged to none other than Gustav Mahler . Vienna is full of such gems.

While the sights impress, perhaps the real highlights are the stories, anecdotes and facts whipped out by the tour guide. For example, the State Opera House has some 180,000 costumes at its disposal and 200 stagehands work every day to make those backstage changes.

All-in-all, the tour’s a lovely way to see inside (literally and figuratively) one of the world’s greatest opera venues.

Tickets & visitor tips

Understandably, no fixed schedule exists for tour times, especially during the opera season (usually September to June) when the nature of the ever-changing daily performances can limit access.

Fortunately, the Staatsoper does provide an advance timetable, ticket info, and online booking opportunities here .

Note that a Vienna Pass sightseeing pass includes one-time participation on the tour at the time of writing.

The English tour should usually be available at all scheduled times, and everything was very well-organised and swift on my visit; the opera tour is one of many tours of historical buildings available in Vienna.

Behind Vienna's scene: the best backstage tours

Vienna is considered to be a city of stages – and not without reason. Every year, world-famous operas, concerts, musicals and plays cast millions of visitors from around the world under their spell. Backstage tour at ORF

In everyday Viennese life, most roads lead past the television and radio broadcasters of Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF). Whether Eurovision Song Contest, New Year's Concert or Ski Alpin: the ORF program, with its four TV stations, often produces memorable moments, excitement, and sometimes also tears of joy. A tour behind the scenes at ORF gives you the possibility to experience Austria's largest media not only in front of TVs and radios. The guided tours through the backstage areas of the TV studios are suitable for everyone (including children) and offer all sorts of interesting information. They are held in German as well as in English or Italian on request.

Behind the musical scenes at the Ronacher

The Ronacher has a unique story to tell: burned down in 1884, twelve years after its construction, rebuilt, and used as a temporary home for the Burgtheater after the Second World War, the Ronacher has now established itself as a permanent feature on the musicals scene . Which makes a backstage tour all the more exciting, because it not only presents historical facts but also gives exciting insights into the world of the musical. The guided tour lasts about an hour and is offered in German only.

Between splendor and prestige: the Burgtheater

As Austria's national theater, the Burgtheater is not only one of the largest and oldest spoken theaters in the Europe but is also considered to be the richest repertoire theater in the world. The prestigious building, whose stairways are adorned with ceiling paintings by Gustav Klimt and Ernst Klimt, is especially impressive thanks to its splendid architecture. The guided tours of the Burgtheater also focus mainly on these areas. The backstage tours are held in German and some in English with a written summary in French, Italian, Spanish, Russian or Japanese.

A house full of music

The Musikverein , home to the annual New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic , enchants countless music fans at home on TV and on location in one of the most beautiful and acoustically brilliant concert halls in the world. This magnificent building, which was constructed based on models from Greek antiquity, is located not far from Schwarzenbergplatz in downtown Vienna. From ballet to Opera Ball

With almost 60 different operas and 21 ballets on around 300 days per season, the Vienna State Opera is one of the best-known opera houses in the world. A guided tour of the State Opera is an absolute must both for locals and for guests from around the world. A 40-minute tour will take you right behind the scenes of the magnificent opera building, where a total of 950 people ensure everything runs smoothly every day. About the Production

Short summary.

The freedom-loving Carmen is desired by all men. Although none of their relationships last, the soldier Don José falls madly in love with her after she coquettishly throws a flower at his feet.

He deserts, renounces a budding relationship with Micaëla, a girl from his village, and joins Carmen's band of smugglers. This time too, Carmen's feelings grow cold and she is only interested in the bullfighter Escamillo. An argument between Don José and Carmen escalates in front of the arena: Filled with jealousy, Don José kills his former lover.

Soldiers stand guard outside a cigarette factory in the south of Spain under the command of Private Moralès.

Micaëla, a young woman from the Basque country, is looking for Don José, with whom she grew up. He is not on duty at the time. When the soldiers become intrusive, Micaëla flees.

After the changing of the guard, when José starts his shift, there is a break in the cigarette factory. The female workers enter the square - enthusiastically watched by the men. Carmen is the most eagerly awaited. She arrives and sings a song about the unpredictability and uncontrollability of love. At the end, she throws José a flower.

Micaëla hands José a letter and tells him that José's mother told her to kiss him from her. José is moved and confused by this surprising reminder of his former life.

The factory workers alert the guards: Carmen has injured a colleague in a fight. When interrogated by Lieutenant Zuniga, Carmen only answers provocatively. José is given the task of guarding Carmen. Flirting and with the prospect of a reunion in Lillas Pastia's pub, Carmen persuades him to neglect his duty. Carmen manages to escape.

On the outskirts of the town, Lillas Pastia runs an impromptu tavern where Zuniga and Morales are guests and are entertained by Frasquita and Mercédès.

Carmen sings an inciting song. Accompanied by celebrating soldiers, the bullfighter Escamillo arrives, is cheered and moves on. The smugglers Dancaïre and Remendado propose a criminal maneuver to the women in which they are to use their feminine charms.

Frasquita and Mercédès join them, but Carmen refuses. She is in love with José and wants to wait for him.

José has been in prison for two months because of Carmen's escape, and today he sees her again for the first time. When the signal for the curfew sounds a short time later, Carmen is furious that José wants to follow him. The argument escalates. Just as José is about to leave, Lieutenant Zuniga returns, who is also after Carmen. José defends her aggressively. As José and Zuniga come to blows, the smugglers return and put Zuniga out of action. José has ignored the tap and attacked his superior officer, choosing a life with the smugglers' gang.

The smugglers meet in the border area and wait for an opportunity to bring their goods across the border.

Carmen and José argue, not for the first time: she doesn't want to be told what to do, he sees "the devil" in her at times like this. Frasquita, Mercédès and Carmen read each other's cards: Mercédès foresees great love for herself, while Frasquita predicts a rich husband and his imminent demise. Carmen recognizes death in the cards: first her own, then José's.

The smugglers get to work. Micaëla has made her way to the smugglers and narrowly misses their trigger. She hides to wait for José.

José, who has remained near the smugglers' camp as a guard, meets Escamillo, who wants to see Carmen. José attacks him with a knife. The returning smugglers separate the fighters. Escamillo bids farewell, confident of victory, and invites everyone to his next bullfight. The smugglers discover Micaëla, who urges José to return to his mother. José hesitates because he fears that Carmen might turn to Escamillo in his absence. Micaëla finally tells José that his mother is dying and manages to persuade him. Escamillo's song can be heard from afar.

There is great excitement in front of the arena: The crowd cheers the bullfighting participants as they enter.

The last to arrive is the enthusiastically welcomed matador Escamillo. Before the fight begins, he and Carmen profess their love for each other. Frasquita and Mercédès warn Carmen about José, whom they have seen in the crowd, but Carmen does not want to avoid the confrontation and stays behind alone.

José confronts Carmen to urge her to make a fresh start. He threatens her, but she no longer loves him and is not prepared to pretend. While the crowd in the arena cheers the successful Escamillo, José stabs Carmen.

About the Direction

When Carmen was premiered, the region of the plot - Andalusia - was dangerous, certainly without any tourist idyll. In order to recreate the original atmosphere of the material, Calixto Bieito searched for a setting in Spain that corresponded to Andalusia at the time. He found what he was looking for in the African part of Spain, in Ceuta: the prevailing mixture of poverty, smuggling, lack of prospects, refugees and soldiers inspired Bieito to create this production. We experience a society characterized by violence, which nevertheless tries to wrest a certain joy, beauty, freedom and love from life.

Nice to Know

The Viennese premiere of Carmen in today's Staatsoper (1875) was the first performance of the work outside France. Moreover, it was only with this Viennese premiere that this opera achieved its international breakthrough.

When can I buy standing room tickets?

Tickets for our standing room can be purchased online or at the Bundestheater box office from 10 am on the day of the performance. BundestheaterCard holders can book standing room tickets online the day before the performance.

In addition, a fixed contingent of standing room tickets is available for regular evening performances from 80 minutes before the start of the performance at our standing room box office (Operngasse entrance).

In which languages are the operas sung?

Our operas are sung in the original languages - these vary depending on the work.

At each seat, subtitles in different languages can be switched on or off via a separate subtitle screen. In addition to the original language of the opera, you can choose from up to eight languages: German, English, Italian, French, Russian, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin).

Can I return my tickets in the event of a change of performance, change of cast or late arrival?

In the event of a change of performance, you can of course return or exchange your tickets.

As changes to the cast cannot be ruled out due to illnesses or other hindrances of artists, there is no entitlement to a refund of the ticket price or exchange in this case.

Tickets cannot be returned or exchanged if you are not admitted to the auditorium due to being late (even after the interval).

About Your Visit

The cloakrooms are located next the the entrances at the Operngasse. You can find additional cloakrooms on the left and right side of the balcony and the gallery and in the boxes. All cloakrooms are free of charge.

We ask you to be on time when attending the performances. Entry to the auditorium is not allowed after the performance has started. This also applied after the break.

Food and Drink

Our gastronomy opens at the same time entry is permitted. You can enjoy some snacks and drinks before the performance starts or you can book a table for the break.
