Luxury trains can easily compete with five-star hotels these days. They boast beautiful living quarters and around-the-clock services, exquisite design, and just as many comforts as you’d find in a ritzy presidential suite in New York or Paris.

The same can be said about the dining. Embark on any high-end rail journey across Europe, Africa, India and beyond, and you’ll be treated to meals that could be straight out of a Michelin-starred restaurant. This is achieved through elaborate presentations (no easy feat, considering they’re prepared in a moving kitchen) and tantalizing flavors—often courtesy of chefs with more than a stellar award under their belt.

To match those menus are lavish dining cars featuring bespoke tableware and studied interiors that make having breakfast, lunch, or dinner not just a matter of substance but style, too.

Belmond Andean Explorer, Peru

Peru’s first luxury sleeper train ticks all the boxes of an over-the-top ride: impeccable service and spectacular landscapes, Peruvian-inspired interiors and on-the-move pampering thanks to an onboard spa. But it’s the food—and the perfectly mixed Pisco sours—that really elevates the experience (besides, of course, the altitude itself: you’ll be 16,000 feet above sea level).

Two lavishly appointed dining cars, named Llama and Muña, welcome guests with plush leather seats, artisanal millwork, and polished macramé divider screens to keep things private if you so wish, creating an ambiance that’s both intimate and eminently refined. On the menu are seasonal dishes that spotlight Peru’s bountiful raw ingredients and culinary traditions, inspired by the country’s flavors from the coastline, highlands, and rainforest—think spices like cumin, smoked paprika, coriander, and ancho chile, as well as fresh produce spanning corn, quinoa, and plenty of vegetables. Jorge Muñoz, the newly appointed executive chef at Monasterio, A Belmond Hotel, Cusco (and one of the country’s brightest gourmet stars) is the mind behind it all, so you know you’ll be in for a real treat.

Whether before or after dinner, do make a stop at the bar in the observation car. With its open deck, it’s the perfect spot to sip your Pisco while gazing at the Peruvian sky. Tickets for a twin bed cabin on a three-night Cusco-Puno-Arequipa journey start around $7,500. A two-night trip from Cusco to Puno starts around $5,500 for two adults in the same room category.

The Palace on Wheels, India

If Europe has the Orient Express , India has the Palace on Wheels . The luxury train, first introduced in 1982 (it got an overhaul in 2017), is, quite literally, a railroad mansion, with decor fit for a maharaja, and a series of services designed to make the journey live up to its high price tag. That includes the cuisine on board.

The train’s two restaurants, Maharaja and Maharani, serve up regional Indian dishes in regal surroundings embellished with hand-carved furnishings and colorful wall lamps, intricate floral tapestries, and mahogany paneling. Sumptuously draped curtains and crisp linens add to the royal aesthetic , though both dining cars have panoramic windows on both sides, to ensure you enjoy the breathtaking views with your meal.

On the menu, the focus is mostly on Rajasthani specialities given the Palace ’s route through the desert state. Offerings change daily but always feature the star ingredients of local cooking: Rich ghee and sweet jowar (sorghum), nutty bajra (pearl millet), and earthy lentils, all rendered in mouth-watering dals and curries.

There are plenty of meat choices, too, from mutton saagwala to tandoori chicken. Guests can also expect North Indian and Mughlai classics, as well as continental, Thai, and international options, which are alternated throughout the trip. Can’t take the heat that often comes with Indian food? Fret not. The chefs— some of India’s best —will happily adjust the level of spices and salt to your request. The bottom line though: Everything tastes—and looks—phenomenal. Tickets start around $5,820 per person for an 8-day journey in a deluxe cabin during the low season.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Europe

A recurring name on pretty much any list of the best luxury trains in the world, Belmond’s Venice Simplon-Orient-Express has, unsurprisingly, three really great dining cars. To add to that, there’s also a brand new cabin category, the Suite, which features its own dining area for afternoon tea and breakfast, and might just be the most luxurious train accommodation yet ).

Called L’Oriental, Etoile Du Nord, and Côte d’Azur, each restaurant dates back to the 1920s and has since been meticulously hand-restored to preserve some of the original period details, from the floral marquetry to the Lalique glass panels and lacquer decorations, transporting you right back to the heyday of luxury train travel.

Don’t expect the atmosphere to be stuck in the past, though: French culinary master Jean Imbert, who was appointed as the new chef for the iconic train last year, has brought in a new visual identity for the cars, introducing new mood lighting, bespoke art-adorned French porcelain dinnerware, and menu designs that reflect the distinct color palette and history of each carriage.

He’s also revamped the food offerings, blending the Simplon ’s gastronomic heritage with a renewed attention to seasonal and local produce (read: French and Italian, with a touch of Austria for the Paris to Vienna itinerary). That means dishes that change over the course of the train’s calendar and an eye for the highest quality ingredients. Recent menus included lunches of free-range guinea fowl with corn polenta and marinated carrots and dinners of lobster vol-au-vent with white pudding and spinach.

Add to that the expert stewards and sommeliers who tend to passengers with a breezy manner that never feels stuffy and some of Europe’s most spectacular landscapes, and you have got yourself one of the most enjoyable train rides there are. For a one-night journey from Paris to Rome , tickets start at $4,594 per person in an entry-level cabin.

Rovos Rail, Africa

A gong heralds lunch and dinner aboard the Rovos Rail , Africa’s most luxurious train journey. It’s a formal call signaling more formal things to come: The restaurant cars—one or two depending on the number of passengers, as itineraries vary from 48-hour trips to 15-day explorative tours—look straight out of the Edwardian era with high-backed, tufted leather chairs, thick carpeting, dark wood, and bell-shaped lamps befitting of an early 20th century private members’ club. In the evening, guests take their seats in long dresses and suits, and happily so: The frill is part of the experience on the high-end sleeper (lunch, while less fancy, is still ‘smart casual’).

Food-wise, things are equally elaborate. Four-course meals created by Cape Town-based executive chef Maryke Reuvers alternate between international and South African cuisines, and focus on fresh ingredients that spotlight the territories the train rides through. Among the local staples, expect delicacies like springbok loin and karoo crumble (a mature hard cheese), as well as treats like amarula (a cream liquor) parfait and koeksister (traditional South African sticky donut).

Everything is, of course, paired with a strong selection of South African wines , making for a dining experience to be enjoyed leisurely and at length as the train passes through craggy mountains and sprawling desert landscapes that can be admired from the comfort of your table. That is, if you manage to peel your eyes off the dishes in front of you. Tickets usually start at $1,630 per person for short journeys in an entry-level suite, or $13,600 per person for long journeys (15 days) in the same room category.

Seven Stars, Japan

Getting on Japan’s most exclusive sleeper train , the Seven Stars , requires some luck—and we mean it. Aspiring passengers must enter a lottery months in advance for a chance to experience it. But manage to snag a seat, and you’ll be in for a truly outstanding ride. That applies to everything from the 10 beautifully appointed cabin suites to the amenities and the dining car.

Called Jupiter, the carriage features a similar decor to the rest of the ride: rich wood paneling, beautifully carved screens, plush floral fabrics for the chairs, and suffused lighting. Once seated, passengers are served seasonal cuisine from the island of Kyushu —the part of Japan the train travels through—crafted by a team of local masters that only works with trusted farmers in the area. The quality of the food is excellent and varied, as dishes are customized to each journey, although you can expect classics like takiawase (an assortment of bite-sized vegetables served with fish, meat, or tofu), and takikomi gohan (seasoned rice cooked with seasonal ingredients, from mushrooms and vegetables to meat and fish).

Besides the train, guests also have the opportunity to eat at some of the region’s most sought-after restaurants, from the French La Verveine to the all-Japanese Imoto—one of Kyoto (and Japan)’s best dining spots—where dinner is a full omakase affair of 10 to 12 dishes that change seasonally. Tickets start at $4,330 per person for a two-day trip.

The Ghan, Australia

The Ghan—the legendary luxury train linking Adelaide to Darwin since 1929 (it also runs from either destination to Alice Springs and back)—offers a full-immersion into Australia’s wild outback. So does the food on board, which is essentially a celebration of Australian cuisine.

Guests get to enjoy not one, but two different restaurant cars and two lounges, plus a swish private club, each designed to have their own character and specific ambience. The classically styled Queen Adelaide with its Art Deco details, for instance, serves hearty breakfasts, two-course lunches, and three-course dinners, while the more relaxed Outback Explorer is a lounge-meets-social hub where you can sip tea or beer over a board game. Then there’s the newly introduced Gold Premium Dining—another beautiful display of Art Deco design by design firm Woods Bagot—which does two-course regionally inspired lunches and four-course dinners with well-thought-out Australian wine pairings; and the Gold Premium Lounge, where you can go to for a morning cup of coffee or an evening night cap. Lastly, the more exclusive Platinum Club, accessible to Platinum Service passengers only (top-of-the-line ticket holders), is the ideal place for a quiet formal dinner with decor that features quartzite tabletops, timber flooring, and leather banquette seating.

The culinary team works closely with local suppliers, farmers, and providers to source ingredients from the diverse environments the train travels through across all of its cars, offering a regionally inspired menu that includes local lamb, saltwater barramundi, Margaret River cheeses, and grilled kangaroo filet. Tickets start at $1,840 per person one way for an entry-level (Gold Twin) cabin from Adelaide to Darwin, and $1,200 per person one way in the same cabin category from Darwin to Alice Springs (in low season). Platinum fares start at around $3,100 per person one way.

Royal Scotsman, Scotland

Another Belmond train, the Royal Scotsman really is all about the journey and giving guests one of the most memorable experiences of their lives. Leaving from and returning to Edinburgh's Waverley Station by way of the Scottish Highlands , the uber-indulgent ride places a strong emphasis on its dining offerings as well as the libations, with some 30 fine wines, liqueurs, and malt whiskies to tickle guests’ fancy throughout the day. There are two dining cars, Raven and Swift, appointed with mahogany-paneled walls and on-brand tweed upholstery (you are in Scotland after all), stark white linen, and fine china.

The best of Scottish produce from both land and sea makes up the menu created by head chef Mark Tamburrini, with plenty of Scottish specialties featuring at each meal—think smoked salmon, kidgeree, spiced roast halibut and pigeon salad. At breakfast, the Full Scottish is a must-try if you like meat—it’s a hefty combination of eggs, back bacon, sausage, black pudding, and haggis (a type of pudding composed of the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep).

But it’s not just about the food. Together with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, the Royal Scotsman also does a five-day Scotch Malt Whisky Tour that—besides three-course lunches and four-course dinners (which you get on the regular trips as well)—comes with tasting opportunities and distillery visits.

And when it’s time for a little R&R, you can either head to the recently unveiled Dior Spa Royal Scotsman , the only spa on rails in the UK, or book yourself into one of the new ultra-luxe Grand Suites set to debut for the 2024 season.

Tickets start at around $7,000 per person for two nights in a twin cabin.

Scenic Dinner Train Ride Locations (2024): A Complete Guide

Dinner train rides are a relatively new type of excursion, hearkening back to the days of yore when one could enjoy first class cuisine while traveling by train.

Today's experiences lack an extended, multi-day journey and typically last just a few hours.  Along with providing passengers with an excellent meal these trips usually include some type of entertainment, such as a play, murder mystery, or train "robbery."  

In addition, there has been a growing and increasingly popular trend of providing alcohol on-board which is either included with the dinner or presented as a wine/beer tasting event.  

You will typically find such offerings at finer organizations such as the Strasburg Railroad, Verde Canyon Railroad, and Grand Canyon Railway.  

This section covers either exclusive dinner trains or regular excursions in 2024 featuring a dinner/meal, all of which are broken down by state.  

Please note!  The information included here highlights  only  tourist railroads (and  only  those including a dinner/meal setting), most of which host day-trips to the general public lasting just a few hours.  If you are interested in long-distance, intercity passenger service please visit  Amtrak's website , the national rail provider.

The dinner train concept has caught on in recent years as an added, upscale experience to excursion trains.  It has certainly witnessed an increase in ridership as the Strasburg Railroad, the nation's second largest tourist railroad has found out, hosting trips for more than 400,000 passengers annually!  

Only the White Pass & Yukon Route in Alaska is larger.   In the May, 2008 issue of Trains Magazine author Erik Ledbetter highlighted Strasburg's premium services within a piece entitled, " Lessons From The Strasburg At 50 ."  As the railroad has learned, patrons want to be pampered and are willing to pay for it.  

The company first provided snack/beverage service in 1988 by introducing the restored parlor car Marian that year which offered snacks and soft drinks.  

They were surprised to learn it sold out faster than standard coach accommodations and from that forward an increasing level of first-class services were offered.  

In 2006 the Strasburg received its liquor license and in 2007 hosted its first wine tasting event, which has huge it.  As the railroad put it, " that has made a huge difference in our business ."  

Such fine services are virtually non-existent via intercity rail travel today unless one can afford a pricey charter trip or owns a private railcar (a very real, but expensive, possibility!).  Some of the more notable locations across the country to experience dinner by train includes: 

• Napa Valley Wine Train (Napa, California) : This luxurious train ride takes you through the scenic vineyards and wineries of Napa Valley. The train features antique Pullman railcars that have been beautifully restored, and the dining experience includes a gourmet meal with wine pairings.
• Grand Canyon Railway (Williams, Arizona) : This historic train ride takes you through the stunning landscapes of northern Arizona. The ride starts in Williams, Arizona, and travels to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The dining experience includes a hearty buffet-style meal, with options for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  All of this is offered in climate-controlled cars, which includes dome cars.
• "The Royal Gorge Route" (Cañon City, Colorado) : This scenic train ride operates over part of the former Rio Grande through Colorado's stunning Royal Gorge. The ride features vintage train cars that have been restored to their original elegance. The dining experience includes a three-course meal, with options for lunch, brunch, or dinner.
• Mount Hood Railroad (Hood River, Oregon) : The Mount Hood Railroad is a charming trip that takes you through the beautiful Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. The ride features historic train cars that have been restored to their original splendor. The dining experience includes a gourmet meal with views of the surrounding mountains and countryside, including glimpses of breathtaking Mount Hood.

Nevada Northern Railway (Ely):   The Nevada Northern Railway, a National Historic Landmark, hosts the "Taste of Italy" dinner train.  According to the railroad this event offers the following: " Your coaches will be pulled by one of our century-old steam locomotives for a trip on the Nevada Northern Railway mainline.   It will be our pleasure to serve you a classic, multi-course Italian meal, complete with flowing wine, and dessert ." 

You also may be interested in another special train known as the Evening  Champagne & Star Train where you can enjoy a glass of champagne while viewing the incredible night sky.

The Nevada Northern Railway is unique in that it is a living museum, similar to the East Broad Top Railroad of Pennsylvania, whereby the entire original route is preserved, some of which still hosts train rides for the general public.

The railroad's history can be traced back to 1905 and historically handled copper from mines located around Ely to connections with the Western Pacific (Shafter) and Southern Pacific (Cobre).  Freight service ended in 1983 although today, the entire 141 mile main line from Kimberley to Cobre is preserved by the White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation. 

However, only a small section from Ruth to Ely is currently maintained for excursions.   Also be sure to check out their large collection of preserved steam and diesel locomotives at the historic shops in Ely.

Virginia & Truckee (Virginia City): The historic Virginia & Truckee Railway began with its 1869 chartering in 1869 to serve Reno and Carson City.

Today, about 15 miles are operable, much of which has been rebuilt since the early 2000's.  They have slowly added an increasing number of excursion options including " Toast of the Canyon Wine Tasting Train ."

The V&T was chartered in 1869 for the express purpose of hauling ore, lumber and supplies for the famed Comstock Lode, the operation of extracting gold and, particularly, silver from beneath the mountains and hills of Virginia City.

During the 19th century the railroad was extremely wealthy in the movement of gold and silver ore; by 1878 it had handled $400 million in business.  In total, the railroad operated a little over 50 miles of rail line. While the mining operations around Virginia City signaled the peak years of the V&T's operations it remained a viable freight until service finally ended in 1950.

In 1974 the first efforts began to restore part of the railroad for public excursions although the project did not gain serious traction until 1991.  Today, the railroad operates about 15 miles of track between Gold Hill (near Virginia City) to Carson City.

Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad  (North Kingstown):   The Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad (formerly known as the "Newport Dinner Train"), is one of New England's more popular such venues operating a former New Haven Railroad branch along Rhode Island's Aquidneck Island and Narragansett Bay.

As the name suggests its hosts full service meals on-board with but also offers other trains such as luncheons and murder mysteries.   These include the Grand Bellevue , Murder On The Bellevue Express , and Murder On The Bellevue Express .  They also have railbike adventures and boating trips, the latter operated as the Newport & Narragansett Bay Navigation Company.

After acquiring the line from Conrail, the state of Rhode Island soon leased the track on  Aquidneck Island to the  Old Colony & Newport Scenic Railway, a non-profit organization.  In 1988 the island's track became disconnected from the national rail network when flooding damaged the bridge over the Sakonnet River, which was removed in 2007.

In 1997, the state allowed a second heritage railroad to begin using the island trackage.  Known as the Newport Dinner Train, it hosted trains along with the Old Colony & Newport Scenic Railway. 

The two entities were struggling by the mid-2010s; the Newport Dinner Train had shutdown by 2012 and was sold, becoming the current Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad.  It is also sometimes referred to as the "Grand Bellevue Dining Experience."

The Old Colony & Newport Scenic Railway stopped hosting trains in 2015 and was merged into the Newport & Narragansett Bay.  Today, all trains are hosted as simply the Newport Dinner Train excursion.

The dinner train runs with its own chef which, according to the railroad includes: " ...[a] fully outfitted kitchen car, where food is prepared daily. Our menu includes dinner and lunch options. Beers, wines, and spirits are also featured on select trains. "

Trains are usually pulled by a little 44-ton switcher locomotive, built by General Electric in 1951 for the Hampton & Branchville Railroad, a short line freight carrier that still serves South Carolina.

The dinner train's other equipment includes:

• A pair of RDC cars (self-propelled rail diesel cars built by the Budd Company in 1956/1957 for Canadian lines, Pacific Great Eastern and Canadian National)
• Dining car  Aquidneck Spruce , originally built as a 54-seat coach for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1946.  It has since been converted into a tabled dining car.
• Theater car  Atlantic Rose , originally a 54-seat coach built for the Atlantic Coast Line.  According to the railroad: " In 2018 the car was again rebuilt into a theater car with bistro seating facing a center stage. It now hosts weekly murder mystery performances as part of the Grand Bellevue. "
• Dashing Dan’s Clam Car , originally for the Long Island Rail Road in 1956 as coach #2943.  It was updated with modern heating and cooling systems in the early 1970s.  It was again heavily rebuilt in the early 2020s.  According to the railroad: " In 2021 the car was retrofitted with a kitchen, repainted to its original gray and orange, and parked at Portsmouth Junction, where it now serves as a classic seaside clam shack offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. "
• Kitchen car, Bellevue Clipper : This car was originally built for the Chesapeake & Ohio in 1948 by the Budd Company as a lounge.  In 1987 it was rebuilt into a kitchen car and was again heavily modernized in 2016-2017.
• South Dakota

Black Hills Central Railroad : While the upscale Black Hills Central Railroad's 1880 Train does not feature meals aboard their trips they do offer excursions tailored to alcoholic beverages, notably the  Wine Express .

This train offers adults the chance to feature local wines and enjoy light refreshments.  Live entertainment is also provided.   There is also Oktoberfest hosted each September that brings a taste of Germany to the railroad.

Heber Valley Railroad :   Utah's most popular excursion is the Heber Valley, which has utilized the Rio Grande's 28-mile Provo Canyon Branch (Heber City to Provo) since the 1990s. 

The railroad does not host a dedicated dinner train but does have an optional boxed lunch, at an additional cost, on some trips.

Their box lunch includes your choice of a ham, turkey, roast beef or vegetarian sandwich, a freshly baked cookie, chips and bottled water.

The Royal Scotsman (Scotland)

These days, Scottish cuisine is a force to be reckoned with. Chefs aboard Belmond’s Royal Scotsman lean heavily on the country’s freshest local ingredients. The traditional breakfast features one-of-a-kind Highland specialties like black pudding, tattie scones, and whisky porridge. The Indian Pacific (Australia)

Great Southern Rail’s The Indian Pacific  deserves a spot among the world’s truly epic train journeys . The four-day, 4,300-kilometer (2,700-mile) trek crisscrosses the whole of the Australian continent, from Sydney to Perth (or vice-versa, if you prefer). For record-conscious travelers, it’s the longest stretch o f straight railway track in the world. The view outside includes an ever-changing landscape , from the rugged terrain of the Nullabor to vineyards and ghost towns to the pastoral scenery of Western Australia. The over-the-top onboard cuisine takes the best local ingredients — mud crab, fresh barramundi, chevre, and honey (Australia is home to some of the world’s best) — and backs each dish with world-renowned wines from Adelaide and the Margaret River.

Hiram Bingham (Peru)

Exclude the dining car on the Hiram Bingham , and this Peruvian journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu is still bucket-list-worthy in its own right. The multi-day ride ambles pass some of the country’s most breathtaking features, including the wild Urubamba River, remote valleys dotted with colorful villages and llama herders, and, of course, the Sacred Valley itself. Add to this an open-air observation car and a beautifully appointed dining car, where every meal is a presentation of the best traditional and modern Andean cuisine. Brunch includes authentic dishes like aji de gallina , a hearty chicken stew with mashed potatoes, cheese, and boiled eggs wrapped in a crepe and served chilled. The four-course dinner is an equally traditional blend with dishes such as Vichyssoise soup, seafood canapes, and local grilled beef. What’s more, it’s all backed with traditional pisco sours and world-class Peruvian wines.

It’s hardly breaking news that long-haul airline food makes you lose the will to live—or certainly wish you’d eaten before boarding. Once a reheated foil tomb of unidentifiable slop is thrust in front of you, you then enjoy the absurdly awkward ballet of endeavoring to eat it without your elbow taking out a fellow passenger’s tray—or indeed the passenger themselves.

Thankfully, however, there’s a far, far classier way to dine and travel at distance: on a train. If you’re thinking a stale egg sandwich and stale-r coffee, think again. Luxury trains not only take you to some of the world’s most remote and beautiful places, but they also serve up dishes that wouldn’t look out of place in a Michelin-starred restaurant—let alone one where the kitchen rattles along at 70 miles an hour.

Here are seven gourmet journeys around the world where you’re always on track for delicious dishes—along with a side order of breath-taking views.

Belmond Andean Explorer, Peru

As aperitifs go, it’s tough to beat. The Observatory Car of the Belmond Andean Explorer lets you sip a perfectly crafted Pisco Sour as you wind your way at elevations of up to 16,000 feet through the majestic Peruvian Andes. The country’s first luxury sleeper train offers jaw-dropping landscapes at every turn, but the plates in their elegant dining cars also really vie for attention.

Always seasonal and always reflecting the remarkable produce of the Andes, menus are designed by the chefs at Belmond Hotel Monasterio in the ancient Incan capital of Cusco. That could mean tender alpaca with Andean cereals and pumpkin cream, or “chocolate textures” which demonstrate Peru’s vast diversity of cacao. The one- and two-night trips link destinations including Peru’s second city of Arequipa and legendary Lake Titicaca, while they even have a separate train, the Belmond Hiram Bingham to whisk you to Machu Picchu in unmatchable style—accompanied by more beautifully crafted dining throughout the daytrip.

Shinkansen High-Speed Trains, Japan

Japan represents in many ways the pinnacle of rail travel thanks to its legendary shinkansen bullet trains which cross the country at speeds up to 200 mph. Sleek, futuristic and always—that’s always—on time to the second, they also offer one of the great railway dining experiences through a dazzling array of bento boxes, known as ekiben, to be eaten at your seat. Pretty much every station will sell them, often featuring local specialties and produce, leaving you only with the challenge of what to choose.

Bento boxes are generally an entire meal, with salads and pickles, dessert and rice all usually included. You could opt for beautifully seared mackerel with a wedge of lemon, teriyaki chicken or fried beef over rice. Naturally, the sushi and sashimi are exceptional, better than you’ll find in many renowned Japanese restaurants in the United States, while wagyu steaks are even an option in some places. Whether you’re a hungover salaryman in need of carbs or a grandmother on a day trip, every passenger will have their favorite dish and spot to find it—while absolutely everyone takes all their trash with them and leaves their seat as spotless as they found it.

Rocky Mountaineer, Canada

In 2020, the luxury tourist train known as Rocky Mountaineer , taking guests between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies, celebrates its 30th year. More than two million passengers have kicked back to some of the best scenery that Western Canada can offer on three routes that run from mid-April thru mid-October. Handily, the fleet of trains are all domed, meaning that you get great views from pretty much every angle, regardless of where you sit.

Depending on the level of service you go for, meals are served either at your seat or in a dining room, but dishes invariably showcase locally sourced produce from Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest such as fresh British Columbia salmon or Alberta beef. Meals are also accompanied by complimentary British Columbia wines and beers, along with high-end spirits.

Denali Star, Alaska

The Alaska Railroad’s flagship train is the Denali Star that runs for 12 hours from Fairbanks to Anchorage—and in reverse. On clear days, there are unbeatable views of North America’s highest mountain, Denali, while there are also countless wilderness landscapes to take your breath away. Something of an Alaska icon—especially given how it traverses remote country that is otherwise largely unreachable—you can’t help but feel the frontier spirit as you experience Alaska the slow travel way.

Lunch could feature reindeer penne Bolognese that channels both Alaska and Italy, or a smoked salmon sandwich with caper salad. Dinner gets hyperlocal with plates such as Alaskan cod with a crust of Alaska kettle chips, aioli and a slaw of birch syrup, or maybe slow-braised pot roast for those needing reheating on an especially frigid day. The desserts section on the menu is cutely named “the end of the line.”

Indian Pacific, Australia

The Indian Pacific train is one of Australia’s two great long-distance rail journeys, an iconic route linking two oceans that are separated by 2,704 miles of breathtaking vastness. Running from either Perth or Sydney, you spend three nights watching landscapes change as brilliantly named spots in the middle of nowhere such as Cocklebiddy and Pinkawillinie pass you by.

Onboard the extremely comfortable train, seriously impressive food and wine never seems to stop coming. Its top level of package called Platinum Club includes wines and spirits, while food wise you could dine on Pacific Ocean swordfish with puy lentils and olive tapenade, or slow-cooked pork belly with miso, crackling, pumpkin puree and apple and celery slaw. For more tastes of Down Under, saltwater barramundi and grilled kangaroo fillet are also popular choices.

The Blue Train, South Africa

If you’ve never enjoyed pancakes at breakfast while watching giraffes run alongside you, then maybe a trip on South Africa’s The Blue Train is in order. They call themselves ‘a window to the soul of Africa’ and 31-hour journey between Pretoria and Cape Town certainly lets you experience the country’s spectacular scenery—as well as a lot of its wildlife—along the 994 miles of track. There are other options including up to Victoria Falls or to the edge of the famed Kruger National Park.

One you’re all aboard, fine china, crystal and smooth jazz are the backdrop to proudly local ingredients such as ostrich, venison and Karoo lamb that graze on the fragrant pastures of the country’s grasslands called veld. From the stunning coastline come Knysna oysters, lobster and other sought-after seafood. South African cheeses and Malva pudding—a cakey dessert with apricot jelly that’s a local favorite—could finish dinner, while you can even retire afterwards for a Cohiba in their Club Car.

Belmond Royal Scotsman, Scotland

Edinburgh’s Waverley Station is the main departure point for one of the world’s most famous trains, The Royal Scotsman . It boasts two dining cars, Raven and Swift, that feature mahogany-paneled walls and luxurious tweed upholstery. The journeys on offer range in length, but one five-day option is ‘The Whisky Journey’ where you discover single malts and single casks in conjunction with The Scotch Malt Whisky Society as you speed through The Highlands.

The team of chefs onboard create dishes using the freshest seasonal local produce, including impeccably sourced Scottish smoked salmon, of course. The Golden Arrow

Luncheon and evening silver service dining.

Bluebell Railway’s Golden Arrow train is the perfect setting for a special meal with friends or an intimate evening for two.

With luxurious Pullman Cars  Christine ,  Fingall , and Car 54, the train recreates the fabulous Golden Arrow which once linked London and Paris with the style and panache which made it one of the most glamorous and famous trains in the world. On board you will enjoy fine food and wine served to the standards of yesteryear.

This premier dining service includes a three-course meal and travel on a steam-hauled train through the beautiful countryside of the Sussex Weald to East Grinstead.  Your journey will last approximately 3 1/2 hours.

A cup of tea or coffee at the end of your meal is included in the cost, and all other drinks may be purchased and paid for on the train.

All Golden Arrow services begin and end at Sheffield Park Station. The Golden Arrow Dining will depart at 7:00 selected Saturday evenings in 2024, while The Golden Arrow Luncheon will begin at 12:30 on selected Sunday afternoons.

We were greeted by the most friendly and amazing smile, from the moment we got on board, the staff went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction, the welcoming atmosphere and attentive staff made the day very pleasant. The menu offered a delightful array of dishes, each expertly crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Every bite was a culinary delight. My dining experience was truly exceptional. and I can’t wait to return. The luxurious train, coupled with exceptional service, made our day truly memorable Highly recommended!

Absolutely fantastic this Christmas trip is a must the best experience you can give someone the staff are absolutely lovely the food amazing could not fault this at all.

The Christmas Festive Lunch journey from Liverpool to Holyhead was great. We were in the Glamis carriage and the decor was lovely. The food was delicious and the porn star martini was very good. We were serenaded by songs and there was also a magician going from table to table. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I was very thankful that we had Del in our carriage who was very helpful. As we no longer spring chickens. He kindly helped us out of and back into the carriage. A big thank you. I hope the managers will thank him from us. Someone who is that willing and helpful should be utilised to the fullest extent. Great team member

First trip in 4 years and just as good as ever, if not better - superb, friendly attentive service attending to our every need in that wonderful atmosphere only found on the Northern Belle and the entertainment too from the singing duo and magician at the table. All four of us had a great day out from Carlisle to Dundee - topped off by a tour of Glamis Castle.

Went on a circuit of Cumbria on 23rd September. Was originally meant to include a return leg through the Dales on the Settle-Carlisle line, but had to be changed due to engineering works on the line. For us, the alternative route down the coast was even better and so we were very happy with the change. Throughout the whole journey, the attentive staff were outstanding and the food and drink were to genuine fine dining standards. The carriage was beautifully presented. Yes, it is expensive, but you don't mind if the experience exceeds all expectations as this one did. Strongly recommended.

Fabulous excursion from Darlington to Edinburgh made an excellent experience by being hauled by Flying Scotsman to mark its Centenary. Absolutely faultless service, food, and organisation. The preparation and presentation of the carriage (Duart) was superb and was regularly maintained throughout the return journey. Nothing was too much trouble for the hardworking staff who cannot be praised highly enough. Main meal of beef was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. Absolutely recommended to anyone. A wonderful day.

We did the Flying Scotsman centenary special journey - from York to Edinburgh. What a wonderful day! The superb, efficient team worked hard to make our day memorable. The luxurious carriages and excellent food and beverages added to the glamour of the day. I’d recommend one of the Northern Belle journeys to anyone wanting this kind of special day out.

What an absolutely wonderful experience. A perfect day with friends spent being served outstanding food and drink by kind, attentive staff whilst relaxing in luxurious surroundings. The whole experience ran like clockwork and will be fondly remembered.

Our hosts Emma and Assam worked very hard in hot conditions to make this a memorable experience. The carriage was comfortable, despite the heat, and the food service for our champagne afternoon tea was excellent. We made our way across Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk and the food and drink kept flowing and filled the time well. This is a great experience and one we would look to do again and would recommended anyone looking to do an afternoon tea for a special occasion to look at this as it is so different from the norm.

We travelled the Liverpool-Edinburgh route of the Northern Belle as part of a birthday present. We were in the Harlech carriage and attended by Barry, Lily and Del. The overall experience was already good in our view but the staff made it perfect, very attentive, chatty and also helpful with whatever we needed. The job they do is difficult, trying to provide a luxury experience for their guests while being bounced about a railway track, but they did it professionally! not once moaning or groaning about it. Had a superb day, the staff were polite and couldn't do enough and we thoroughly enjoyed it! so thank you guys, you are a credit to the company!

Excellent customer service these days is a luxury, and Northern Belle have this down to a fine art. From the beautifully decorated immaculate carriages, fantastic food with accompanying drinks to the attention to detail, the whole day was a wonderful experience for my family and I.

An amazing day of luxury and wonderful service and who doesnt want to go to Devon in a day! This was a day of pure pampering thanks to Anwyn, Phil and Lucy who looked after us on the Belvoir carriage of the Northern Belle. They really were fantastic. Make sure you have dieted for a few days as the food really is amazing and keeps in coming! The service from all three in beautiful surroundings really did make this a special experience and the added bonus was 24 degrees sunshine in Devon. Included was the Dart Valley steam train and ferry tickets to Dartmouth and a lovely afternoon strolling by the river and a glass of wine before we headed back to the Nothern Belle for the journey home. Most people were celebrating an anniversary or birthday so a lovely atmosphere on the train. Worth every penny and 5 star review fully deserved.

The food was endless & the presentation was mouth watering. Tremendous charisma & presence from anwen. What a chatty, friendly, kind & approachable host. Always smiling. Really made us feel relaxed & at ease. I can't tell you how much we enjoyed being passengers in luxury. It was lovely spending the day in trustworthy hands. All the staff work so hard to accommodate for the train. It’s remarkable. Thank you for a special memorable day

As a birthday gift from my employers my daughter and I had a trip from Edinburgh to Dumfries House (which included a guided tour), brunch. and champagne reception with a 5 course dinner on the way home. A full day from 9:20 in the morning to arriving back in Edinburgh after 10p.m. and the most wonderful experience from start to finish. You feel very special sitting in the beautiful surroundings (the Alnwick carriage), amazing food, lovely staff and not forgetting the on board entertainment. For anyone wanting to experience something special I would highly recommend the Northern Belle and look forward to doing it again in the future.

What an amazing experience. The train was fabulous and the staff made it their misdion to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves. Cannot fault the food or the staff. If you want to spoil yourself you must do this trip.

From the moment we got to Durham train station the service on the Northern Belle was fantastic. The staff attention to detail was great. The food was incredible and Glamis Castle was lovely place to visit. I would like to thank the staff to allow me to see their kitchen and talk to the chef. I can't recommend this more highly then say it was worth very penny!

We travelled on The Northern Belle from Cardiff to Truro on 3/6/23. From the minute you board right throughout your journey, you are treated to the luxury of the train. The seats are armchairs, the crockery and glasses are quality and the food is absolutely outstanding. Barry and his team were friendly and professional. We had both musicians and a magician to entertain us. This is our second trip aboard The Northern Belle and certainly hope it’s not the last.
