Who Is RuPaul's Drag Race's Ra'Jah O'Hara?

Ra'Jah O'Hara smiling at an event

" RuPaul's Drag Race " aired its first episode in 2009 (via IMDb ). The show's premise is similar to other competition-based reality series: several drag queens compete to be crowned the winner by RuPaul and a set of guest judges. RuPaul later said that he knew the show would be big; while speaking to Vulture , he explained why. "I knew the show's mission statement was to celebrate the art of drag," he said. And I knew that drag has more significant meaning and power than just what it seems like on the surface — it speaks to the duality of our lives as humans on this planet."

Ra'Jah O'Hara was a competitor in the show's eleventh season back in 2019. Ra'Jah is the stage name for Benni Miller, who has been performing in drag for years (via IMDb ). While O'Hara was ultimately eliminated from the show and ended up giving a series of interviews about what production was like, how it felt to deal with viewers that weren't always kind, and those incredible lip sync battles (per Billboard ).

Ra'Jah O'Hara was surprised by negative reactions from fans

Ra'Jah O'Hara explained to Gay Times that she doesn't believe "RuPaul's Drag Race" really portrayed her in the best light. "My experience on 'Drag Race' was rough and I got really down on myself to where I couldn't really showcase me at my best." While audiences definitely got to enjoy plenty of amazing lip-syncing from O'Hara, she still had more to give. "So I regret not showing fully what all I'm capable of," she said. "I have a background in art: I sing, I dance — yes, I actually went to college on a full scholarship for dance — and I can act, and not just a damn fool."

O'Hara also went into her "Drag Race" experience expecting to be embraced and was surprised when she wasn't. As she told  Chron , "I went into this experience thinking everybody's gonna love me like everybody loves me from (Dallas). I felt like being on a larger platform just means that more people get to love me and get exposed to me."

After O'Hara received death threats she knew she to find her peace inward. "I didn't expect all of the racism I've received from "fans" of a show. "A show that's basically about loving not only others but loving ourselves, it's hard to deal with a lot of the backlash," she said. "But I still try to lead with love and keep my energy positive and keep it moving."

Ra'Jah O'Hara feels like she has more to give

One of the toughest parts of appearing on reality television is that the medium isn't exactly designed to show off an individual's positive traits, strengths, and attributes. Instead, reality TV is about entertainment. Luckily, O'Hara has plenty of work ahead of her that will hopefully help audiences learn more about what she brings to the table. As she told Billboard , there's more where that came from.

"There's so many things in the works, but I will most definitely be touring and going around the world, showing off my lip sync skills and my showgirl abilities," she said. "It's gonna be fun to meet each and every fan of Ra'Jah's, so they actually get to see me and see how I actually am as a person, as opposed to the character from the show."

No matter what happens, O'Hara is bound to move through it with grace and a sense of self-worth. As she told Billboard, "I mean, I hate to say it, but I think that this is the world that we have to live in, and we as queens have to push the message of love. Love will conquer all, if you lead with light, then the darkness will eventually disappear. But I do feel like... maybe... I don't know. The only thing I can do is be true to myself."

"This may be the last of my drag race journey, but it’s not the end."

Ra'Jah O'Hara is simply the best!

Ahead of the grand finale of Canada's Drag Race: Canada vs the World , O'Hara handed out some thank yous to the competition series that changed her life.

O'Hara says that she "had to take a break from social to reconnect to myself! I was getting lost in the noise... in Montreal to celebrate the closing of this chapter with my sisters! I have so many thoughts but pride is the main feeling!"

Then she rewinds a bit. "Started my Drag Race journey knowing I had what it took but the outcome wasn't in my favor but here we are three seasons later and I'm waiting to see if this time will be the moment! Win lose or draw I know that I'm enough without a doubt."

"This may be the last of my drag race journey but it's not the end of my journey so stay tuned and thank you for the love, the hate, for doubting me, allowing me to prove the world wrong and for the memories," she said.

Ra'jah D. Ohara

On Thursday (April 11) night, RuPaul’s Drag Race served up some organic realness when the queens were tasked with turning all-natural ingredients into runway-ready fashion looks.

Some queens got 5 star ratings from the critics — both Yvie Oddly and Brooke Lynn Hytes were praised for their farm-to-runway fashion, but Plastique Tiara took home her first win for showing off her process using unprocessed materials. Two queens, however, faced the cutting board. After a lip-sync to Sheena Easton’s classic ’80s pop hit “Strut,” A’Keria Davenport was added back into the competition, while Ra’Jah O’Hara got chopped after her fourth time in the bottom.

Ra’Jah spoke to Billboard the day after her elimination about her lip-sync record, dealing with hatred from the fandom, and her on-air beef with the queens.

Scarlet envy talks meeting fans, getting meme'd & her shocking 'drag race' elimination.

How are you feeling after watching your elimination last night?

You know, I am optimistic after watching the last episode — I’m super optimistic about the future. Like mother said, this is only the beginning. So we can only go up from here! I’m excited, I thought I was going to be devastated watching myself get eliminated on national TV, but I wasn’t. I wasn’t … too sad. Maybe it’s because I already lived that experience, so I’m not into reliving that experience.

That’s good to hear! So listen, fans can say whatever they want, but the truth is that you were a lip-sync assassin this season. That’s just a fact. Is that a fun reputation to have on the show, or was it something that stressed you out?

Going into the season, I was really excited to show my lip syncing ability — and I know that sounds crazy, but a lot of times on Drag Race , we go through so many challenges, and jump through so many hoops just to show ourselves and standout amongst a group. And it sometimes has nothing to do with our drag or what we do as entertainers — like a potato sack race, for example. So, the opportunity where you get to see who we are is on the runways, but I feel like Ra’Jah is at home and most comfortable on a stage, entertaining people. So what better opportunity to showcase what I do than in a lip sync?

But having that reputation on the show is not fun, because that means that you are the lowest performing of the group. But you’ve been able to send some girls home by your performance ability. It’s just a double-edged sword, is all.

But you were clearly showing that you know how to turn out a successful lip sync. What do you think the key to a good lip sync is?

First off, know your words. [ Laughs .] Second, it’s about knowing the emotion behind the track, and most definitely embodying the song from the beat to the melody to the emotions. And then it’s about bringing your own uniqueness, and charisma and … stank. You know what I’m saying? That’s what Ra’Jah does, she puts some stank on her songs.

'Drag Race' Star Shangela Will Host the GLAAD Media Awards in New York

Now a lot of fans did not appreciate your “stank” in your lip sync against Scarlet, and you’ve been on the receiving end of quite a lot of hate, even some threats. What do you think can be done to try and prevent this kind of vitriol from the fan base?

I mean, I hate to say it, but I think that this is the world that we have to live in, and we as queens have to push the message of love. Love will conquer all, if you lead with light, then the darkness will eventually disappear. But I do feel like… maybe… I don’t know. The only thing I can do is be true to myself. I can’t really focus on the negative. Personally, I am a black boy from the South, so I have already had to deal with a lot of that, period. So it happens, that’s the world we live in, I can just pray that people wake up, and people get up out their feelings and get up out their bag, and just continue to enjoy the television they get from us — as opposed to trying to micromanage, trying to belittle queens in defense of other people.

Especially in a situation where I had no real… beef with Scarlet. Like, there was no real drama between Scarlet and I. Yes, I was hurt in the moment, and I had my human reaction, but I think the viewers need to know that we are allowed to have real emotions, and that’s what I brought; something real and authentic, not pre-produced.

A lot of times when this drama happens, queens will talk about the way that the show is edited. Do you feel that you were given a fair edit? Is there anything they didn’t show that you wish they did?

I think the show actually portrayed my experience on Drag Race pretty authentically. I feel like they should have or could have shown some of my lighthearted or softer side, because I watched my part of the season, and you barely know who I was even friends with on the show. That didn’t help the story that they were telling for the entire show, not just for my portion. So I do wish that I could have gotten a softer side, as opposed to just all of my emotions.

But honestly, it is what it is, and I can’t complain. Everything that you hear me saying, that was me saying what I had to say. But yeah, I’m OK with it. I won’t blame editing, or say the editing made me look a certain type of way, because I made myself look that way. That was truthful to my experience.

I think a lot of what made fans so upset was about the way you did speak out against a lot of the show’s queens — including Yvie, Scarlet, and as we saw last night, Plastique, after her emotional walkthrough with Ru. Have you had a chance to reconnect with them after everything that went down in the Werk Room a year ago?

Um… with those three, we were never the closest. We don’t have any issues, that I know of, but I mean, we’ll have to see what the reunion brings us. As of now, we are all in a good place, I’m in a good place with all of them. I don’t know how they are after watching the last episode, or how they’re feeling about what I had to say, but ultimately I think they’ll move past it, because I think they know the situation, and they all know the pressure cooker that we were under. They had moments, too!

Something that I feel was overlooked about you was your fashion sense — you made most of the outfits that you wore on the main stage, and a lot of them were sickening. How do you approach making a garment with your fashion sense.

I think what sets me apart from other queens is my design aesthetic, because a lot of girls … well, I won’t say what a lot of girls go for. What Ra’Jah goes for is not super-glam, it’s not super high-fashion, but it is fashion with a street edge, because that’s who Ra’Jah is. She is a polished pageant girl from the streets, I grew up in the hood, so I represent an urban take on high fashion glam.

I do have to correct you, if that’s okay — I didn’t make most of my outfits, I made all of my outfits for the show. [ Laughs .] So I am so proud of the work that I got to present on the show. No, I didn’t get a lot of praise or credit where credit probably should have been due. But that’s okay, that’s life. You all still saw it.

'RuPaul's Drag Race' Season 11 Power Ranking: Episode 6

What can we expect to see coming up from Ra’Jah?

Well, we’ve got a lot of things in the works, most of which I can’t speak of. But, I am working on a few music collaborations with my sister Honey Davenport, we’re gonna get in the studio and do our damn thing as opposed to trying to come up with a song and routine to … oh god, what was the song? “Throw Glitter on the Mountain?” “There’s Glitter on the Mountain?”

Truthfully, I couldn’t tell you, the lyrics didn’t really come across on the televangelist episode.

Yeah, but I’m excited about you guys actually getting to hear me actually showcase my singing ability. There’s so many things in the works, but I will most definitely be touring and going around the world, showing off my lip sync skills and my showgirl abilities. It’s gonna be fun to meet each and every fan of Ra’Jah’s, so they actually get to see me and see how I actually am as a person, as opposed to the character from the show.

Ra’Jah O’Hara On Getting Cut From 'RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars’

Ra’Jah O’Hara talks about the highs and lows of her time on 'RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars’ season 6.

Much has been said about who gets made out to be the “villain” on reality TV shows, but few reality stars have managed to subvert the label as gracefully and graciously as Ra’Jah O’Hara. After finishing in ninth place on season 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race , the Dallas-born queen found herself in the rather unfavorable position of having to stave off cruel fans who unfairly decided that she was the source of much of the season’s early drama. But rather than lash out, Ra’Jah took all the criticism in stride until she could return for season six of All Stars , where she arrived fully ready to redeem her reputation by showing viewers the real, “authentic” version of herself.

And it paid off in spades. Whether she was impressing the judges on the runway with her uniformly stunning looks (every single one of which she designed herself, several of which were sewn in her trademark color of purple) or providing viewers with endless laughs thanks to the quick wit she consistently displayed in confessionals, Ra’Jah more than outdid herself on her second time on the show — and her performance took her all the way to top four. While she didn’t take home the crown this time, the finalist is leaving All Stars 6 in much better spirits than she left season 11. From a self-described “villain” to an undeniable fan favorite? Not too shabby!

Ahead of the All Stars 6 finale, NYLON hopped on the phone with Ra’Jah O’Hara to talk about making it to the top four, why she thinks she was perceived as a villain her first time on the show, how she managed to redeem herself, using her platform to speak out about being Black in America, her mixed feelings about sharing personal family matters on television for all the world to see, and what she learned from her season 11 “power bottom” experience.

You made it to the finale of All Stars 6 . How does that feel?

Well, I'm in relatively high spirits first off because I woke up this morning, okay? That was already a blessing. But I'm feeling double and triple-blessed because I did make it to the top four. Now we are really celebrating! I'm on top of the world. I can't complain.

When you first found out that you were going to be on All Stars , were you immediately expecting to make it this far or were there any things you were nervous about?

When I came onto season 11, actually, I was like, "Girl, this is your title. This is what you’re here for.” But then, of course, that dream got cut very short. Some harsh realities happened. But coming back for All Stars 6 , I told myself, girl, just have fun . I already knew that I had everything it took to be RuPaul's Drag Race ’s Next Drag Superstar because I have that unique mix of charisma and talent, okay?

I know that's right!

But I also knew that, coming back for All Stars 6 , I had to absolutely show what I'm capable of as a queen and who I am as a person. But I most definitely needed to remember to have fun. I feel like I did all of that and I think that's what enabled me to be in this position that I am in right now.

After being eliminated in ninth place on season 11, was All Stars something you were immediately thinking about? Or did it take a while for you to come back around to the idea?

First off, when you say I left in ninth place... damn ! You didn't have to slap me like that, Michael! [ laughs ] But I knew leaving season 11 that I had a polarizing personality. I also knew that I made great TV. I know that I had fun for the most part, and I enjoyed watching myself. Of course, there were some things I had to learn and relearn about myself or discover about myself from watching the season, but I wasn't jaded about my experience at all, so I knew if I ever got a phone call to come back to RuPaul's Drag Race , I had to take that opportunity because how many opportunities am I going to get? How many times are they going to call you? I figured that if they called me and said they wanted me to come, that meant they actually wanted me.

So I was going to show up and show out and do what I do. But I also had to remind myself, Girl, don't get up in that room and start acting a fool and getting all up in your feelings. Girl, just go up there and have fun. Show them who you are and just do what you do at the house, okay? If you get in your feelings, girl, go in that corner and twerk it out, okay?

You said you already knew that you might be polarizing. Given that the fan response you received the first time wasn't so great, are you saying you weren't surprised at all by that? Were you expecting that?

It's kind of weird because it’s a double-edged sword. In season 11, I made great TV. I was on a lot of the show that season. I had a lot of screentime. I was in the confessional doing my thing, so I knew that I was going to be able to shine and be bright and do well in the aspects of, like, commentary because, you know, I always have something crazy or funny or shady to say. I feel like we all do, but sometimes, if it ain't funny, it ain't funny — and some of them girls ain't funny!

So this time, I knew I had an opportunity for people to actually get to know me and actually love me and see me. But it was all about what I wanted you to see, and I feel like what I wanted you to see was myself and who I am and how I walk through life authentically. I didn't want to come in and put on. I didn't get an opportunity to see myself doing well on TV the first time, so that's what I wanted to actually do — is come on TV this time and do well. That was my goal. But I knew that I was going to be TV gold because I was TV gold the first time, okay? I was TV platinum the first time, so coming back, I knew I was going to be TV gold.

Well, it’s interesting, because as we saw this season with Silky Nutmeg Ganache, people who didn’t have good fan responses their first time can sometimes get so in their head about changing perceptions on All Stars that they lose what initially made them so endearing to the people that did like them. How did you find the balance between trying to correct the narrative about who you are but still bringing your trademark charisma?

I think with me, especially because I was already considered a villain, that means I had already received the bulk of all the hate. So coming back, there was no more that could be said that would’ve been any worse than what was already said. So I was like, I can't really worry about these people and how they’re going to perceive me. I have to go in that room and make sure that I'm present in that room . That's what I had to do. I couldn't focus on the outside factors that I have no control over. I can't control how people perceive me, but I can control how I react and how I show up to the room.

What I wanted to do was show up being myself. I had to give myself plenty of pep-talks. I had to talk myself off the ledge plenty of times. I had to go take a breath, woo-sah , and say, Girl, you know what? This ain't your moment right now. But baby, you still got another opportunity, okay? You might not have killed it in that acting challenge, but bitch, you’re about to walk down this runway and serve it, so get your head back in the game .

I had to hype myself back up because, a lot of times when we’re in a situation where we've been praised and then we come back and get negative critiques, we get back in our feelings. But I had already gotten all the negative critiques. The judges didn't get to see me thriving at my best on season 11, and when you're already at the bottom, you can't go anywhere but up. That's what I took from my season 11 bottom experience — my power bottom experience . I said, “You know what? Soldier up, girl. Let's go! There is power in those bottoms, okay?"

Do you think some of the initial negative responses to you in season 11 had anything to do with you being Black? That factor has been known to have an impact on how certain queens are perceived on this show.

I don't know that me being considered a villain had anything to do with me being Black. I think it had everything to do with how I was reacting in the moment and what I gave my energy to in season 11. Because that's what [producers] often do, is ask us questions about how we feel about the situation. If my reaction to a certain situation is negative, of course there isn’t going to be a positive answer [to air]. I guess you could turn a negative into a positive, but that's what I showed. That's what I gave my energy to — being sour, being salty, being in my feelings, and being very insecure.

So what I had to do is take that energy and direct it somewhere else. I had to tell myself, Girl, you're good. You're great. You're worthy. You're an All Star. They called you to be here. They wanted some good TV, so they called you back. That's why you're here. Do your thing .

The final challenge called for you to make a song about being an American and you used your verse to speak up about the state of being Black in America right now. Was it important for you to use your platform to talk about racial injustice?

It's crazy. It's something that I've never really been conscious of. I can even admit that, even during the midst of 2020 with all the social injustices that we were going through, I never saw myself as a person that was like a super activist. I never considered myself one of those people that showed up in the room like, "Yeah, we’ve got to do this! We’ve got to create change!” But what I realized throughout the pandemic and throughout all the social injustices was that, as a queen, I really don't have any other choice but to use my voice. Even if my voice is just me walking in the room and being seen, that's enough. I'm doing my part just by showing up.

I have no other choice but to stand up, use my voice, and use this platform to stand up for what's right — and not just what's right for me , but for what's right for everybody . I don't feel like I walk through the world saying, "Oh, I'm a proud Black man!" But guess what? I'm a proud Black man, and I'm not going to apologize for showing up in the room with my melanated skin. I'm just going to show up and show out as a human being, as a person, as a queen, as an entertainer. And oh, yeah, by the way, she’s Black, too. Oh, and by the way, she's also sickening. And, oh, by the way, she's self-sufficient. And, oh, by the way, that's my homegirl!

One of the things you were praised for most this season was your fashion. You had me gagged every single time you stepped foot on the runway — which makes it an even bigger deal that you actually made everything you wore. How did you even manage that?

Oooh, when I tell you I locked myself in my living room! My house, first and foremost, was a mess . I got the list [of runway themes] and I was literally at the sewing machine every single day. I would wake up, get me something to eat, get on the phone to holler at my homegirls and kiki, and all you would hear is [ makes a sound effect ] the sewing machine in the background. Most queens have resources and all of that good stuff, but I didn’t. I left season 11 as a villain, so nobody wanted to work with me. People didn't even want to have me in their shows, let alone come to a meet-and-greet, and let alone become my friend so I could say, "Hey, girl. Y'all got some free designs y'all could send to your homegirl because I’m going to be on TV?" Nuh-uh.

So I knew that if I was going to come back, I had to represent and show what I could do for myself because those were the only options that I had. I didn't have designers that I could pull from or $10,000-$20,000 to take out in a loan for fashion for Drag Race . I was a broke queen, so all I had was my $600, a sewing machine, some thread, and my two fingers. I had to make it happen.

During the Pink Table Talk, you opened up about the relationship with your mom, which I could tell was a hard thing for you to do. What prompted you to share that information and be that vulnerable on TV for everyone to see?

I actually didn’t want to share that. It just happened. I actually felt like I said a little bit too much and that's why you saw me, in that moment, crying afterwards, because I felt like I had shared too much. I don’t know. The way I was raised is what happens in this house, stays in this house . We don't talk about family business outside of the family, you know?

So I think it was just the conversations that we were having and Scarlet opening up about how she had two loving parents. It just really opened me up. I think my teammates helped me reach that moment of being vulnerable enough to actually talk about my situation with my mother. Since that moment, I've had so many people tell me how much it helped them, how it's made them want to reach out or continue to work on their relationships with their parents that they may not be so close or connected to. So I feel great that I was able to really be vulnerable in that moment and let my guard down. Regardless of how it played out or whatever, I'm glad that it was shown and that I was able to have that moment because that was a real moment.

That's actually what I was afraid of on season 11. I was so afraid of being vulnerable or being shown as being weak. I didn’t want to be seen crying on TV. It was kind of like, oh, girl, I didn't realize I was such a big crybaby! So I was like, Dang, girl! You going to cry like this at home?

What are you most proud of from this season and what is your biggest regret?

I am just grateful for this experience. I don't really go through life with any real regrets. I feel like what I did and what I've shown has been great. I'm glad that I didn't give them the opportunity to catch me in a negative headspace because I really wasn't in a negative headspace at all. Even when I found myself in those negative headspaces, I had to literally just snap myself out of it. Like I said, I had to feel my feelings, have my moment, and then throw it away because we can't let hurt, disappointment, and all those negative things ruin our day — especially when there's more days to be had. If there's still light at the end of the tunnel, girl, follow the light!

What would it have meant for you to win?

Oh my god. It would mean that RuPaul saw me for who I am. I am the poster child of what it takes to reclaim your redemption. I am the perfect poster child to represent this battle, this moment. That would have been the most validating thing.

‘Drag Race’ Finalist Ra’Jah O’Hara Only Spent $600 on ‘All Stars’ Looks

Catherine DiMeglio

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Last week, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 6 came to its epic conclusion. Kylie Sonique Love was crowned champion out of the remaining queens: Eureka, Ginger Minj, and Ra’jah O’Hara. As fans of the show are aware, All Stars is the big leagues of drag. Any look less than fabulous simply won’t cut it by Ru’s standard’s on the runway. But apparently, Ra’Jah O’Hara finessed her fashion skills this season and only spent $600 on her All Stars season 6 looks.

The resourceful finalist became known for her sewing skills during her time on Drag Race . For a queen, this is probably one of the best talents to have, considering how much Ru despises off-the-rack fashion on the runway. Let’s not forget the epic meltdown during last season of Drag Race UK .

“I don’t want to see any f*cking H&M!” Ru famously yelled during that episode. Luckily, The Drag Race creator had no worries when it came to the self-sufficient Ra’Jah O’Hara.

How Ra’Jah O’Hara Finessed the Runway

As Drag Race All Stars 6 was filmed during the Covid-19 pandemic, Ra’Jah was forced to work with limited resources.

“I had to take a piece of this costume or a piece of that outfit and throw something with that,” the queen said in an interview . “I had to be very resourceful first off because we were in the middle of a pandemic working with limited time and resources, but also because I didn’t actually have the connections. A lot of girls leave  Drag Race  and they are so beloved by the world that the world opens up and unveils themselves to these queens so that they have a lot more opportunities to be seen and recognized by designers.”

She went on to explain that leaving season 11 as the villain didn’t give her much opportunity to collaborate with new stylists.

“The fact that I absolutely sew, that I know how to sew and that I’m comfortable sewing as well. So I knew that I had to use what I had and all I had at the time was $600,” she continued in the interview. “Because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to take out a $20,000 loan like some people do. I feel like if I can’t make it with what I got, it ain’t for me. And luckily I was able to make everything that you saw.”

After All Stars , Ra’Jah collaborated with fabric.com to re-create the winning “Eye See You Queen” look from episode nine. In a DIY tutorial, the queen show fans step by step how she designed her look from the “Drag Tots” challenge. Fabric.com also includes all the materials used by Ra’Jah in the video. At Fabric.com fans can shop all the essentials used by queens in the “Werk Room” to create their own legendary looks.

Ra’jah O’Hara

Benni Miller, better known by her stage name Ra’Jah O’Hara, is an American drag queen who rose to fame after appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 11 and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 6. In January 2019, Rajah O’Hara was confirmed as one of fifteen participants for season eleven of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She was in the show’s first-ever six-way lip sync alongside Honey Davenport, A’keria Davenport, Plastique Tiara, Scarlet Envy, and Shuga Cain in episode three, which she managed to survive. O’Hara lipsynced against Scarlet Envy again later, sending her home to Donna Summer’s “Last Dance.” She herself was sent home after lip syncing alongside A’keria to Sheena Easton’s “Strut” in the next show.

Prior to Drag Race, O’Hara performed in pageants. Ra’jah O’Hara Narcisse was her original name. Sha’Niah Ellis Narcisse, Silkie O’Hara Munro, and Kelexis Davenport, all pageant titleholders, are her drag mothers. She was named as one of thirteen participants for the sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars in 2021. O’Hara was named the victor of the main challenge in the second episode of the season. She lip-synced with Brooke Lynn Hytes, runner-up on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 11 and co-host of Canada’s Drag Race. Both of them were proclaimed victors. In addition to earning $20,000, O’Hara sent fellow participant Jiggly Caliente home. In the ninth episode, she also won the main task, but lost the lipsync against Kameron Michaels. With two victories and two bottoms in the sixth and eleventh episodes, O’Hara ended the season as a runner-up. She keeps up with her fans on Instagram @therajahoharashow, where she boasts more than 250,000 followers.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
