Shooting the Daystate Red Wolf Safari with Roger Lait

Roger Lait helps a shooting friend get a large dose of high-power happiness in the shape of the Daystate Red Wolf Safari .

“Safari, so good.” At least I think that’s what they used to say back in the day. Well, Safari SO good! Let me explain. My buddy Ray Hampton bought an FAC-rated gun. It was a very good gun, but needed a bunch of tuning. He spent more time tuning the thing than shooting it. I was lucky. I had an FX Impact in .25 and a Daystate Red Wolf in .22 and both were amazing.

I would spend time tuning the FX to a certain slug, but for hunting I would switch to the Daystate Red Wolf because it always worked right off the bat. There was no need to check the tune, no need to tweak the muzzle velocity, it just worked.

My buddy had the hump because he just didn’t have that and he wanted it – big time. “That’s it, I need another gun that just works and that needs nothing other than pellets or slugs and air,” he moaned to me one day.

We talked about it for a good while and came up with the Daystate Safari in .25 calibre. This seemed to tick all the boxes for long-range target work and hunting, so the gun was ordered.

So we waited. I say “we” because I think I was more excited than him for the arrival of this gun. I had shot the Safari in .177 and the thing was off-the-charts good and stupidly accurate, so I could only presume that the .25 would be the same. After what seemed like forever, and it did take some time, mind you, the big day arrived and off he went to pick up his new gun.

But before we get to that, let me just give you some background on the Daystate Red Wolf series of guns. I bought mine very early on in .22 FAC in candy red and did it ever look the business! Maybe it was too good to hunt with. Why would I take such a lovely stock in the woods and bash it against trees? And I knew I would because I am a nightmare for that kind of thing.

I have a Remington 700 BDL in .243 with the most amazing, beautiful wooden stock that I hardly use because I know I would scratch it to pieces. Would the Red Wolf end up stuck in the cabinet like the .243? Well once I started shooting this gun, I soon realised that this gun could not be stuck in the cabinet. It was far, far too good for that.

It had three settings, slow, medium and fast, and that’s what you got. If it shot a pellet or slug at one of the speeds then your luck was in. If it didn’t, too bad! The settings were 34 ft-lb, 45 ft-lb and just over 50 ft-lb, so there was a good range of power there.

Now onto the Safari. This rifle, let’s call it the big brother to the Red Wolf HP, has lots more power.

I’ve been shooting the gun on high power, which is 65 ft-lb, but I believe the others are 45 ft-lb and 55 ft-lb. I’ve chronoed this rifle with every pellet and slug I could get my hands on, and the gun is flawless.

So what’s new with the Safari? My Red Wolf, as I said, has that beautiful smooth candy red stock, while the Safari has a heavy texture to it, and it’s such a lovely colour too. That texture feels great and makes it really non-slip.

And I mean non-slip – the gun feels like it’s glued to your hand. This is handy when it’s raining, which as we all know it does a whole bunch in the UK. Don’t get me wrong, I still take my Red Wolf out in the bad weather, but I must say I would much prefer to take my buddy’s Safari. I would think that in the wet this stock would be amazing.

So what else does it have? Well, it’s an electronic rifle and has the updated GCU 2.0 board. The GCU is the Gun Control Unit and does it ever pack a punch!

This makes sure that it pushes a pellet or slug at mad speed. Now it’s all well and good that the rifle pushes out the ammo that fast, but is it accurate, you ask? Well carry on reading and prepare yourself!

Accuracy is a funny thing. What some call accurate is certainly not what I would call it. I have seen many YouTube videos supposedly showing amazing groups at 50 and 100 yards. Well let me tell you, I can only assume that they have not been to Specsavers lately!

My background is HFT, and to shoot HFT well you need excellent accuracy. Some of these videos would suggest that these people have never seen a gun! I would say that at 50 yards a gun needs to be able to shoot a five pence-sized group and at 100 yards it needs to be easily below 1”.

The sub-inch 100-yard group is the Holy Grail of course with high-power airguns, and we all strive to achieve that or even better.

Sadly some of these groups are anything but sub-MOA on YouTube, and yet the people are still happy. It seems odd to me too. Anyway, I digress.

The Safari turned up. Of course the barrel was cleaned before first use and the scope was put in some Sportsmatch adjustable mounts. Now we were ready to go and zero the rifle. First of all we used a target at 20 yards to adjust the Sportsmatch mounts to make sure there was plenty of elevation adjustment left in the scope for shooting at longer ranges.

Once that was done we took it back to 50 yards for an initial zero with JSB MkII King Heavies. These pellets were stacking! The group was tiny and this gun loved these pellets. A great sign of things to come.

On to Wildman Slugs. I know Liam, the owner of Wildman Slugs, very well and he is good friends with Ray, the owner of this lovely Daystate Safari. So Liam and I chatted about what slugs this gun might like. He very kindly sent down loads of each weight slug from 30 grain right up to 40 grain for us to try. Well wouldn’t you know it, this rifle shot every single one perfectly! When I say that, I mean it one-holed at 50 yards with every single weight bar none.

After much laughter we put a new target out at 100 yards. Guess what? It did it again. The gun shot every single slug bang on, the only difference being the point of impact as the weights of the slugs went up or down. It was like this rifle was some kind of supergun. I had never seen anything like this in all my shooting life. How does this gun do it? More to the point, how come this gun wasn’t mine?! Why didn’t I buy one? Do I ever wish I had.

I could carry on and on about this wonderful rifle, and it does exactly what it says it can do. I am blown away by it. I suggest that if you are looking for an FAC rifle and you have the funds then this should go at the top of your shortlist. I love it!

Daystate Redwolf Safari .30 Full Field Review

red wolf safari air rifle

Early this year Daystate released the top tier Safari line of high powered PCP rifles. The Safari model is similar to the standard Redwolf but has upgraded electronics as well as a one of a kind Italian produced stock. Beyond the stunning looks the rifles performance has been enhanced by the ART polygonal LW barrels.

red wolf safari air rifle

DESCRIPTION

A bold challenge by Daystate that the new Red Wolf Safari high performance air rifle meets with ease. The new Daystate Safari GC2 power plant provides a massive power upgrade and faster speed of the action’s cycling rate. Each Safari has three individual power settings that can be selected by the shooter in seconds to satisfy any target or hunting requirements. The Red Wolf Safari’s LCD screen displays the state of air pressure in tenths of a bar, shot count, total shots fired, magazine counter and more. The heart of the water proof computer controlled system is the electronic MCT. This firing valve takes pressure readings from the carbon fiber air supply and relays to the system the air pulse required in order to give the maximum shots per fill for tight shot-to-shot consistency and bench rest winning accuracy.

The new Daystate A.R.T. barrel on each of the Safari rifles has been developed and tested to provide the best long range accuracy from an air rifle. This new barrel technology is the result of hundreds of hours in testing many different design specifications such as choke, spin rate, profile, lead in, ballistic coefficients etc. The large capacity battery powering the unit is conveniently stored in the grip for easy access and provides thousands of shots before a recharge is required from the included charger. There is no finer trigger on a sporting air rifle than the fully tune-able match unit on the Red Wolf Safari. The trigger can be set to break on a breath or set for sporting applications as needed. The action of the Red Wolf Safari features a left or right hand reversible, super glide side lever that requires almost no effort. The action is fast and positive and the new GC2 (or gun control unit) can provide the power required for speed competitions or a lighting fast follow up shot in the field. The Red Wolf Safari has a 10-shot magazine or can be used with the included single shot tray. The carbon fiber shroud system reduces muzzle report with minimal weight and adds to the impressive appearance of the air rifle. Each Red Wolf Safari is nestled into a unique Italian produced stock. This beautiful stock has a patented finish applied that is extremely rugged. The weather resistant process requires hours of hand labor resulting in a non slip surface that is durable and elegant. The stock has been crafted with a thumb up or around position and fine stippling on the grip areas. A soft touch adjustable cheek piece and three way adjustable butt pad complete the Safaris attention to detail. A five year transferable warranty comes standard. The Daystate Safari represents the absolute pinnacle in airgun accuracy, technology, performance and quality!

*The Red Wolf Safari can be further tuned with an optional Daystate programmer within the rifles limits. This feature is not for the novice as it allows each power level program to be manipulated to achieve the best speed and accuracy for a given pellet out of each individual rifle. A specialized Accuracy Research Team or A.R.T. tune is available as an optional upgrade this highly advanced custom work is performed by a specialist A.R.T member with many hours spent in shooting each rifle with software customizing and barrel conditioning. The A.R.T. tune is NOT required for match winning performance it is only for those desiring to squeeze every ounce of accuracy out of each individual rifle. Daystate has included the default program if the user wants to return to the factory settings.

Airguns Of Arizona sent the Daystate Safari and sponsored us to get out and bring this review to you. My first impression of the Safari was WOW, what a gorgeous rifle. The stock on the Safari is unlike anything I’ve ever seen on any PCP rifle.

red wolf safari air rifle

The grain on the ambidextrous stock looks very similar to barnwood but with a much smoother texture. The process to produce these stocks is very unique and very much a secret to Daystate. I looked at the 24″ LW Polygonal barrel that’s carbon fiber sleeved for stiffness, very well done.

red wolf safari air rifle

At the end of the barrel is a cap that hides the 1/2″ UNF threading for mounting a wide variety of moderators. My experience with the Polygonal barrels is they shoot both slugs and pellets very accurately. The Safari has a 480cc bottle that can be filled to 250 bar and and in .30 caliber should yield about 30 good shots on high power.

red wolf safari air rifle

Moving back the Safari has a beautifully crafted sidelever that opens and closes very smooth thanks to the electronic firing system. The electronic guns have no spring that usually associated with firing the hammer to open the valve. The sidelever is also fitted with a small magnet that keeps it held closed and free from noise when walking around. The sidelever can be moved to the other side easily for left handed shooters.

red wolf safari air rifle

The breech itself has a very nice finish as well as 11mm dovetail for mounting optics. I have mounted the Aztec Emerald 5.5-25×50 ffp side focus scope that works very well for hunting and is more than adequate for most target shooting applications.

red wolf safari air rifle

The .30 caliber Safari comes with one 5 shot self indexing magazine, this magazine loads very easy and has a magnet that holds it snugly in place.

red wolf safari air rifle

Out back of the receiver is the manual crossbar safety that can easily be used with thumb, very comfortable and easy to use. This safety is also used to wake the electronics from sleep mode, more on this later.

red wolf safari air rifle

Moving down to the trigger we have a fully adjustable match grade trigger, one of the best I have seen. The trigger shoe can be fully adjusted as well to fit well to anyone’s shooting style.

red wolf safari air rifle

On the left side of the rifle is an LCD display that will tell us the fill pressure and power level the rifle is set to. With the LCD we can check the health of the rifle as well as to easily tune the power level to suit various performance needs.

red wolf safari air rifle

The fill port is located just under the rifle standard to all Daystate models as well as having a very nice magnetic dust cap.

red wolf safari air rifle

The beautiful Italian made Safari stock has and adjustable comb cheek riser to further fine tune the rifle to it’s user. The fit and finish is astounding and the riser has a wonderful rubberized texture that feels nice when shouldered. The butpad is fully adjustable as well but found it to be just fine for my own preference. Just underneath the grip area of the stock is a small door that houses the battery to power the electronics of the Safari.

red wolf safari air rifle

With a flat blade screwdriver the door can be opened to charge the battery with the included charger.

red wolf safari air rifle

The wires have very little slack so it’s important to be careful with the wires, somewhat delicate connectors.

red wolf safari air rifle

The battery should give well over 1000 shots to the gun on a full charge. To charge the battery fully takes about 45 minutes, I like to top it off before any major outing. The charger will have three lights that will turn blue when battery is fully charged, if the battery is low these lights will be red.

red wolf safari air rifle

The Safari comes with a detailed manual that explicitly shows the charging process as well as all the rifles electronic adjustments. The Safari has 3 power levels that can easily be changed by the user and is explained in the users manual or in the video portion of this review.

The following day I loaded up the Safari and headed for the mountains to test the Safari at various ranges, and to set it up for several days of hunting.

red wolf safari air rifle

The LW Polygonal barrels from my experience shoot both pellets and slugs very well so wanted to use my time to test both. I brought a variety of Nielsen Specialty Ammo slugs to test at long range as I felt the Safari was a worthy candidate to shoot them. The weather was very cold and windy and did not make for the best shooting conditions, I figured I would use the wind to my advantage. When testing I have found sometime wind can be a good thing, great way to practice. I set a target out at 162 yards and proceeded to shoot both pellets and slugs. After my first few shots I immediately fell in love with the trigger on the Safari, simply perfect for target shooting.

red wolf safari air rifle

At these ranges I was not correcting for wind, I wanted to see the drift of both pellets and slugs. The goal was to find something with low wind drift. The 47 and 49gr NSA’s both shot very well, the 49’s being a bit heavier seemed to be my best choice for hunting.

red wolf safari air rifle

I then put out a new target and tried the same thing with the 50.15gr JSB’s, the pellets drifted much more and were less predictable.

red wolf safari air rifle

I now moved the targets into 100 yards and now tried to correct for the wind and to zero in the rifle producing some very good results with both pellets and slugs.

red wolf safari air rifle

Nielsen Specialty Ammo 49gr HP 5 shots@100 yards

The Safari is a ridiculously accurate gun, the key is to keep the Polygonal barrel clean. Many standard LW barrels shoot very well but the Polygonal needs to be cleaned much more frequently from my experience.  By this time the weather was getting very poor but I was not done as I wanted to see how the Safari performed at some extreme long range. Marley and I moved the Jeep to another spot that offered a better view for long range shots.

red wolf safari air rifle

I set out a Gatorade bottle at 208 yards and wanted to see how consistently I could hit it. With my first failed shot I was able to correct enough for wind to connect with the bottle using the 49gr NSA slugs .

red wolf safari air rifle

When shooting long range it’s important to find where you run out of scope adjustments. For extreme long range adjustable mounts are needed otherwise we will run out of elevation or be limited to lower magnification. My conclusion is the Safari in .30 shoots consistently and accurately out to 150 yards with ease. I was impressed with the Safari’s long range capability and I think with some different mounts the rifle is certainly capable of more. The weather was giving me the hint to pack up so before the snow we made our way back home. I was happy to get out and test the Safari and looked forward to getting it into the field for some hunting.

The area I had decided to camp had just received a good amount of rain and snow so getting there was somewhat of a task. The road going into the area was pretty awful to say the least, the Jeep mashed through it like a champ though. Most of the way to my spot was covered in snow, a beautiful winter wonderland. I drove to several spots before I settled in and decided where I would camp, definitely a change of scenery from a hot and dry desert. I found a spot that had a dry patch that was surrounded by Joshua Trees, really cool area.

red wolf safari air rifle

Lindsey said I was completely crazy for wanting to “tent” camp in such cold weather, something I don’t often do. One of the things I enjoy about doing field reviews is sometimes it forces me to get out of my comfort zone. The plan was to arrive early to film some time lapse footage and to find a good location to camp. With the recent storm I had expected little to no animal activity but was hopeful to try bringing in some Coyotes.  As the Safari’s firing system is electronic, cold weather and “electronics” don’t mix well from my experience. I figured this trip may be the ultimate test of the rifles “real world” durability and field use. Beyond hunting I wanted to film some survival type things to be used for another project.

red wolf safari air rifle

The high of the day was 34 degrees with a low of 19 at night. Brrrrrrrr to the bone!

red wolf safari air rifle

I filmed most everything and will enclose the review in video form at the bottom. After setting up camp Marley and I made way North to set out a caller. One thing very important to note about the Safari is it’s “sleep mode”. After 5 minutes the Safari’s electronics will shut down and can be”woke up” by turning the safety off. Sometimes when hunting I will not have the safe on, in this case the rifle will go into sleep mode and we forget. When the opportunity arises to take a shot we raise the gun, aim and pull the trigger only to find nothing happens. This happened to me and was frustrating, was my fault for having a bad habit. To solve this problem in simple I had to learn and remember to put safe on after taking a shot. Basically I needed to be in the habit of using the safety, something I should have  been doing anyways.

red wolf safari air rifle

Marley flushed one Jack that was buried under the snow, they lay under the sagebrush with ears back. The snow falls and covers the brush almost like an igloo. I set up a caller and we concealed ourselves between some large Joshua Trees, this area looked like a good vantage point.

red wolf safari air rifle

I ran the caller for a few minutes using Mouse Squeaker that has worked for me several times. Within about 5 minutes I spotted a large Coyote at about 145 yards, he finally made way over the hill and came into about 100 before stopping just behind a Joshua Tree. I had a great shot lined up but he quickly spooked down to the left out of sight. Tried the caller again but it never returned….uggggg/ was happy I at least called one in. By this time it was late afternoon so we headed back to camp to make a fire and get some grub, made some mac&cheese lol Dinner for the lazy as I call it.

red wolf safari air rifle

It was nice to have a fire and enjoy the dead winter silence, well worth the trip just for that. That night was cold as predicted but we managed well with plenty of blankets. (Note) Bring extra socks!!! The following morning the sun did come out and brought enough to start melting the snow fairly quick.

red wolf safari air rifle

Marley and I headed away from camp through the forest of Joshua Trees where I spotted several fresh Jackrabbit tracks as well as the yellow tinge in the snow. The Aztec Emerald 5.5-25×50 FFP scope works very well for hunting, I like keeping the scope set to 5.5 magnification when walking around. Staying at lower magnification gives a nice wide field of view and makes finding the target much easier.

red wolf safari air rifle

We made our way to the edge of the forest where I spotted a fair sized Jackrabbit at just over 130 yards, made a great headshot that took it down clean. THWAAACK!!!

red wolf safari air rifle

Marley sprinted out to recover and was excited as can be with her first kill of the trip. Thankfully I captured everything on both my large camera and Tactacam 5.0 with FTS mount.

red wolf safari air rifle

I was so happy to have some success, really did feel like an adventure and was well worth a cold night. The Safari is a powerhouse of a rifle and gets out to range very well with pinpoint accuracy. After this trip I plan to do more cold weather camping, was very pleasant. Enclosed are my final honest thoughts of this rifle that I hope may help those thinking to purchase. I want to thank Airguns Of Arizona for outfitting me with this rifle and sponsoring Marley and I to get out and review it.

Now for bigger game. A bold challenge by Daystate that the new Red Wolf Safari high performance air rifle meets with ease. The new Daystate Safari GC2 power plant provides a massive power upgrade and faster speed of the action's cycling rate. Each Safari has three individual power settings that can be selected by the shooter in seconds to satisfy any target or hunting requirements. The Red Wolf Safari's LCD screen displays the state of air pressure in tenths of a bar, shot count, total shots fired, magazine counter and more.

In this first post in HAM, Chad Kentner reviews his Daystate Red Wolf PCP air rifle. Take it away Chad…

The Daystate Red Wolf wraps up all of the British company’s cutting-edge technology into one beautiful package.

Over the past few months I’ve had the pleasure of owning and shooting this rifle both in competitions and informal plinking with friends. The consistency and accuracy that I have experienced has truly helped to build my shooting confidence.

As an example, Last year I went from shooting a best score of 23/60 and 40/60 on a two day event at the Pyramyd Air Cup , to now consistently shooting around 50/60 in several local events and at the Crosman All American Field Target Championships and placing 9th overall.

I also shot a .22 caliber Daystate Red Wolf at Extreme Benchrest this year and was happy with my first effort there.

BTW. As you can see, the gun I shot at Extreme Benchrest had no shroud…

The .177 Caliber Daystate Red Wolf - An Owner's Perspective

Let’s begin with a look at the performance I have experienced with the Daystate Red Wolf…

The .177 Caliber Daystate Red Wolf - An Owner's Perspective

I have been using JSB 10.3 grain pellets that have been slightly lubed. Wanting to really stretch the rifle and it’s capabilities, I choose to go beyond the standard 5 shot groups and up the challenge to 10 shot groups. Out to 30 yards it is a laser, producing almost single hole groups with 10 shots using shooting bags and a folding table in an open field!

At 50 yards I was able to produce ¾ inch groups with 10 shots. With both wind playing a factor as well as my stability shooting off a makeshift bench, I feel confident in saying that my groups at this distance have the potential to be much smaller given better circumstances.

The .177 Caliber Daystate Red Wolf - An Owner's Perspective

Since we know that the Daystate Red Wolf can perform as advertised, let us take a closer look at the rifle itself.

It has a beautiful pistol grip laminate stock while –  for the traditionalist – it is also available in walnut. There is  a true carbon fiber shroud together with a factory attached moderator that makes this absolutely whisper quiet.

The stock is adjustable with the ability to raise and lower the cheek rest, a two way adjustable butt pad for the perfect fit, an adjustable trigger blade and two stage trigger. At the bottom of the grip you will find a small trap door for battery removal which is needed to charging and or replacement at some point in the future.

The heart of the Daystate Red Wolf is the Map Compensated Technology or MCT electronic system. As a traditionalist, I was both leery and curious as to how this would impact my shooting experience. All that I can say is that it is just as enjoyable if not more enjoyable than any mechanical system I have tried yet.

The MTC system uses solenoid powered valve to regulate shot to shot consistency. This prevents regulator creep and provides a huge number of shots you get on a fill. Also as a result of this electronic system, it has become extremely easy to cock the new sidelever.

The .177 Caliber Daystate Red Wolf - An Owner's Perspective

This is a result of not having to pull a hammer back against the spring to cock the rifle. Remember we are talking about just reseating a electronic solenoid to shoot your next round!

The rifle also comes equipped with a LCD readout that shows remaining air pressure, your current power setting (Low, Medium and High), magazine shot count, low battery indicator and a menu when adjusting options.

One of my favorite features is the magazine and how the electronics prevent you from firing once you have expended all your shots, which prevents the unacceptable misfire.

The .177 Caliber Daystate Red Wolf - An Owner's Perspective

The battery that gives the Daystate Red Wolf electronics life has been a bit of a debated topic among owners and onlookers reading online forums. I have seen this portion of the rifle called “cheap” and others have even suggested that this was “overlooked” by Daystate and should be improved. Let’s take a quick look at some of these possible concerns and I’ll explain my thoughts as well.

The first of many of the complaints I have seen state that there should be an external charging port so you do not have to remove your battery for charging. I understand that there is a bit of an inconvenience factor here but let’s also look at it from a safety perspective…

Lithium Ion batteries do go bad and when they do, they can become a explosive fire hazard if not handled correctly. By having to remove the battery, you are now also quickly able to examine the battery for possible replacement. The number one telltale sign of failure is that the battery itself will begin to swell.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you get thousands of shots off a single charge so you don’t need to charge as often as you would have with old style of batteries.

Some have said that the battery is a cheap foreign made product. My first response to this is does it work? The obvious answer is “yes” and it works well too! Secondly and much more importantly in my mind, is that this means it can be easily replaced by various retailers down the road and it won’t be prohibitively expensive to do so.

The .177 Caliber Daystate Red Wolf - An Owner's Perspective

Something else that I have read is the concern that the battery must be removed before removing the stock. Although this is a true statement, I would argue it is like saying you have to remove a screw to take off the stock. It is just the nature of the beast and a moot point. Especially since you only need to remove a single screw and the battery which takes all of a minute to do.

Now that I have addressed a few of my feelings on the general complaints, I do have a few areas that could be improved on the Daystate Red Wolf.

I should state that these are by no means a deal killer and I would still make the same choice to purchase the rifle after knowing these things…

The .177 Caliber Daystate Red Wolf - An Owner's Perspective

First on my list are the wires from the MCT electronics to the battery plug. They appear rather small and potentially fragile, unlike the wires coming off the battery itself. Only time will tell if this is actually an issue and from what I have seen inside the electronics they could be easily replaced if damaged. That’s why I’m thankful for Daystate’s robust 3 year warranty.

Another area to take a second look into is the battery charger. It comes with a plug for the European Market and needs an adapter for a US outlet to work. Mine did at least come with the adapter!

The .177 Caliber Daystate Red Wolf - An Owner's Perspective

The charging port also is a bit confusing with a four prong receiving port where the battery only has a three prong plug. Duh!!!

Knowing that the battery is made of two cells, you can quickly determine that the plug goes all the way to the right so that the lights for cell one and cell two light up as charging. However for those who are not familiar with these chargers, this could easily become confusing. Not to mention the directions don’t explicitly explain how this works.

All in all as both an owner and reviewer, the Daystate Red Wolf is as near to perfection as I have seen an airgun get and would highly recommend that if you get a chance to shoot one that you should.

Even better yet, place an order and own the pride of the Daystate pack and see what all the fuss is about!

Why are super high-powered air rifles growing in popularity? Mat Manning finds out more.

red wolf safari air rifle

August 06, 2020

Mat Manning heads to the range with a super-high-power air rifle to see how it compares with his usual fare — and the results are impressive

high power air rifle

Mat settles in at Tower Guns for
some serious range testing with the .30 calibre Daystate Red Wolf Safari

The popularity of the high-power air rifle has rocketed over recent years. It wasn’t long ago that on-ticket air rifles were something of a rarity, but countless shooters now seem to be moving over to them.

The shift is apparently fuelled by American shooters’ boundless
desire for ever-increasing pneumatic power, although more and more UK-based airgunners are taking the FAC-option.

I have been shooting FAC-rated air rifles for about 13 years. Although
I still believe that sub-12ft/lb airguns are by far the most versatile because their relatively low power can often be an advantage, it is sometimes useful to have a bit more grunt without having to reach for a powder-burner.

My preference is for a .22 air rifle churning out a muzzle energy of around 30ft/lb. My Daystate Red Wolf sits in this category and will shoot a 16gr to 18gr pellet pretty flat out to 50 metres and with far less carry and risk of ricochet than my .22 rimfire.

Pest control

By current standards, my usual FAC airgun set-up is actually pretty feeble and I almost always limit myself to head shots when using it to target pests such as grey squirrels, rabbits and corvids.

Most of the time it is all the gun
I need, but there are occasions when I am tasked with controlling crows in places where the job demands discretion. An airgun is the perfect tool for the job but being limited to headshots can be restrictive, especially when targeting wily corvids that stubbornly refuse to land close to the hedges into which I weave my hides.

high power air rifle pellets

The hefty .30 calibre Daystate Rangemaster Lite (left) next to a .177 calibre pellet.

The super high power air rifle

I was recently discussing this quandary with Tony Belas, of Daystate, and he suggested that I try the Red Wolf
Safari in .30 calibre. This sledgehammer of an air rifle is an uprated version of my familiar set-up, and has a muzzle energy approaching 80ft/lb.

Tony explained that shooters across the pond had been using the Safari to tackle some seriously big quarry and assured me that no crow was going to survive a strike to the upper body from this airgun. That was enough to convince me to give it a try.

The Safari measures 114cm before you fit a silencer and, with all that air cracking out from the muzzle, I was certainly going to attach one. It looks like a cumbersome gun but, at 3.8kg, it is actually very manageable and its stock design and balance make it comfortable in the shoulder. I paired the Safari with a 5-30×50 MTC Mamba Pro scope — an optic that would give me plenty of magnification if I wanted to really push the distance.

Equipped with a full air bottle, chronograph, rangefinder, bench bag, pad, pen and all my other testing essentials, I headed over to Tower Guns on the Somerset/Wiltshire border. Run by my good friend Roe Norman and based on his farm, the shop has a 100-metre range with a substantial bund behind it — the perfect place for testing high-power airguns.

After being told that Rangemaster Emperor pellets were the best option for the Safari, I had opted for the standard 50gr Emperors and the Lite version,
which still tips the scales at a hefty 44.75gr. After zeroing superficially with the heavy pellets at 20 metres, I then pushed the target out to 50m and disaster struck…

Shim cut

A shim cut from an empty cola drink can enabled Mat to gain more vertical adjustment on his scope

Most people who use heavy ammo with a high power airgun will know that you have literally to lob pellets on a distinctly loopy trajectory. So curved was the Emperors’ flightpath that I immediately ran out of upward adjustment on the scope and it wasn’t any better with the lighter pellets.

I thought I had pre-empted and remedied the problem by shimming the bottom of the rear scope mount with a slip of 35mm camera film when I mounted the scope, but it obviously didn’t provide enough lift.

.30 calibre pellet

This stray .30 calibre pellet really opened up when it connected with Mat’s metal target holder.

A happy coincidence

The range session looked like it was coming to a grinding halt before it had even got going. I had a boot full of airgun gear but, irritatingly, nothing
I could use to make a shim.

By happy coincidence, Roe had keen airgunner Ian Laidler staying in the farm’s holiday cottage. Ian donated an empty cola can, from which I carved a shim to fit my scope mounts. The shim was placed in the bottom of the rear ring to lift the back of the scope and thus push the crosshairs down towards the low-hitting group. I am pleased to say that it worked a treat.

With a few clicks to spare on the elevation dial, I was able to get on with some serious testing and the results were extremely interesting. Grouping was slightly hampered by a stiff right-to-left breeze, but the lighter pellets seemed to perform best.

Thanks no doubt to the Safari’s computerised internals, muzzle velocity sat consistently between 872 and 886fps, giving a muzzle energy of a little under 77ft/lb with the Emperor Lites. Hitting power is huge by airgun standards, as demonstrated by the stray pellet that hit my metal target holder before I fitted the shim. The pellet opened up to a diameter of 18mm and the cross-section was still about 5mm deep in the centre.

Of course, power counts for nothing without precision and, even in the wind, grouping was pretty good. Groups averaged around 13mm centre to centre at 40 metres and 21mm centre to centre at 50 metres — and I’d expect them to be significantly tighter in the absence of wind drift.

Average drop from 40 to 50 metres was around 27mm. I would have liked to have pushed the range further but the wind made it impossible to print meaningful groups at 60 metres and beyond so that will have to
wait for another day. I was able to ascertain that average drop from 50 to 60 metres was in the vicinity of 55mm, so you really need to know your ranges in order to apply correct hold-over and hold-under when hurling such
heavy pellets down-range.

So what did I take away from the session? The first thing is that the Safari gets through a lot of air, as it only returns about 25 consistent shots from a full fill of its 480cc carbon-fibre bottle. That is plenty of shots for most of my pest control assignments but the significant air blast means that muzzle flip is more noticeable than it is on my 30ft/lb Red Wolf.

high power air rifle

The .30 calibre Daystate Red Wolf Safari air rifle churns out significant power with impressive consistency

Responsive trigger

One big advantage of the Safari, once it
has a silencer fitted, is that it is much quieter than my .22 rimfire running subsonic ammo, so it should be extremely useful for discreet pest control. It is also an easy gun to
shoot, thanks to its electronic internals. Lock-time feels incredibly fast for an airgun and its electronic trigger is extremely responsive — a welcome feature as mechanical triggers can feel heavy on high-power air rifles.

I really don’t think that a mega-power .30 calibre air rifle will ever beat my 30ft/lb .22 when it comes to versatility, but I can see it proving useful when you need a real wallop without much noise. I am looking forward to a windless day on the range
so I can really push the distance, and then some sessions on the crows and rabbits to see how it performs in a real pest control scenario.

Daystate Red Wolf Safari .22 High Power

*scope and rings not included.

Now for bigger game. A bold challenge by Daystate that the new Red Wolf Safari high performance air rifle meets with ease.

The stunning Daystate Red Wolf features up to the minute electronic technology & a popular side lever cocking mechanism

Images show Hi-Lite variant in HP FAC spec

The all-new Red Wolf holds the mantel for the most advanced PCP sporter in the world - and for good reason. A breath-taking picture of elegance on the outside, secreted within its sidelever-operated, computerised action lies the very latest electronic MCT technology developed from the Pulsar program.

You may order this gun online, however due to the VCR act, we are not permitted to ship directly to you, we can however ship to a registered firearms dealer local to you. Once we receive your order, we will contact you to arrange which registered firearms dealer you would like the gun to be shipped to.

Digitally regulated for a super consistent high shot-count, and sporting a trigger that incorporates adjustability of both release and finger placement, the Red Wolf delivers match-like accuracy at the very extremes of airgun ranges. Its masterfully sculpted stock sandwiches soft red undertones between its black laminates, although a walnut version is also available for traditionalists. However it’s dressed though, its ambidextrous design caters for a perfect gunfit courtesy of a butt pad and raised cheekpiece, both fully adjustable.

Aiding the Red Wolf’s user-friendly handling is a lightweight carbon-fibre bottle (though a steel B-Type  option is available), above which sits a fully-shrouded carbon barrel that helps mute the muzzle report in the field. And, of course, the Red Wolf’s new sidelever design marries effortless cocking with speedy loading courtesy of Daystate’s latest generation, auto-indexing magazine.

In looks, handling and performance, the new Red Wolf is pure airgun artistry.

No 30-Day Trial Period!

That is why I offer you the  option  of thoroughly testing Yours before I ship it to You.

Others may not tell you this up front… but I will-  I will not mislead you . DayState’s policy is: once they are sold, they stay sold… once you receive it, it is considered a “used” gun and therefore no longer new and cannot be taken back and sold as new. If there is a mal-function, you are covered of course under the manufacturer’s warranty and I will make those arrangements for you. There is no 30-day trial period like there is for other air guns on my website. So please be sure that you want one of these air guns before you place your order. That is why I test yours thoroughly before I ship it to you. If it is not right, you will never see it. Again, I will not be able to accept a DayState return for any reason.

Thorough Testing Option ($275):   Order your DayState pellet rifle today with free Continental USA ground shipping and I will pressure test it for 5 days (24 hrs is not enough) and then run the ballistics on it to find the magic pellet for you. And, if you buy a scope and rings at the same time, I will zero your scope to the hole created by the magic pellet. Takes about a week to get to me, a approximately a week for testing and then shipping to you. Meanwhile, you will be able to place a separate order for your magic pellets and everything should land about the same time. Once you receive your DayState pellet rifle and magic pellets, all you will have to do is take aim and start hitting your bulls-eye!!… I know what you are thinking… you are correct- the guesswork is eliminated. City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

red wolf safari air rifle

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

red wolf safari air rifle

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

red wolf safari air rifle

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

red wolf safari air rifle

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

red wolf safari air rifle

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

red wolf safari air rifle

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

red wolf safari air rifle

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

red wolf safari air rifle

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

red wolf safari air rifle

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

red wolf safari air rifle

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

red wolf safari air rifle

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

red wolf safari air rifle

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

red wolf safari air rifle

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

red wolf safari air rifle

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

red wolf safari air rifle

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

red wolf safari air rifle

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

red wolf safari air rifle

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

red wolf safari air rifle

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
