Gear Closet: Scarpa ZG Trek GTX Hiking Boots Review

When it comes to hiking and backpacking we happen to be living in a golden age of footwear. Gone are the days of searching high and low for the appropriate boot or shoe to accompany us on our adventures.

Instead, we now tend to be overwhelmed with options, ranging from low-priced, lightweight hikers that are great for day hikes on our local trails to more rugged and durable boots built for trekking through some of the most rugged and remote landscapes on the planet.

Deciding which of those options best meets our needs can be difficult, after all, many of us just need something that falls somewhere in the middle ground. Fortunately for us, Scarpa makes the ZG Trek GTX , a boot that offers plenty of comfort and stability, as a price point that will keep our wallets happy too.

Before I get too far into the weeds with what makes the ZG Trek GTX standout from the crowd, it is always a good idea to point out buying any type of shoe –– be it a hiker, a runner, a cross-trainer, or a pair of dress shoes –– is a very personal affair.

What feels good on my feet may not work for you, which is why it is important to try on a pair of boots or shoes before you buy. All of that said, I think Scarpa’s boot is an excellent utility player that will not only meet, but exceed most people’s needs, whether that’s hiking local trails, heading to the AT , or trekking to Everest Base Camp .

Classic Good Looks Impress

Straight out of the box, the Scarpa ZG Trek GTX impresses with its classic good looks. This is enhanced by the boot’s suede leather upper, which offers an attractive, understated design. At a time when some outdoor companies are embracing retro styling and 80s throwback colors, I was happy to see that the ZG Trek was more reserved in its approach.

The boot itself features a unique, but subtle, pattern in its leather that looks really nice, it just doesn’t happen to be overly flash, which is totally alright with me. This allows the boot to look like something that could have been made at just about anytime in the past 20 years, providing timeless good looks that will stay relevant in the years ahead too.

Plenty of Modern Technology

But don’t let those looks completely fool you. Underneath the hood, the ZG Trek is sporting plenty of modern technology. For instance, it is infused with a Gore-Tex membrane that keeps it waterproof while still maintaining a high degree of breathability.

That means your foot stays comfortable and dry while out on the trail, even if you have to make stream crossing or splash through rain and mud.

That performance extends to keeping your foot dry from perspiration too, as the membrane allows heat and moisture to escape from the interior. This helps to prevent blisters and hot spots, which are the bane of every hiker’s existence.

Partnership with Vibram

Underneath, Scarpa has worked in conjunction with Vibram  to develop its own outsole. Dubbed the Salix Trek, this sole is built specifically for use with the ZG line of boots, providing excellent traction and mobility, without adding excess weight and bulk.

In my testing, that sole proved to be extremely competent on a wide variety of terrains, including hiking in alpine environments. I’ve worn this boot over mud, dirt, rock, thick grasses, and a variety of other types of rugged ground and came away quite impressed.

In fact, the biggest compliment I can give the boot is that I forgot that I was even testing them. That means they simply performed up to m expectations with ease, not drawing undue attention to any glaring performance deficiencies along the way.

Breaking Them In

One of the first questions I usually get when it comes to recommending hiking shoes and boots is, “how long does it take to break them in?” For the ZG Trek, the answer is “not very long at all.”

Other than the fact that the boots were a little stiff out of the box –– which is to be expected with any new shoe –– there was minimal break-in time required. After an hour or so of hiking in these boots, they started to loosen up nicely, and once again I soon forgot that they were new boots at all.

Instead, they felt like a comfortable pair of shoes that I’d owned for years. As always, before embarking on a major hike, you should wear your chosen footwear around a bit to make sure they’re ready to go.

In this case, the suede leather was supple and pliable enough straight out of the box that I wouldn’t hesitate to use them on a significant trek after just a short hike or two to break them in.

Great Build Quality with Ample Support

Built for use in fast hiking and rugged, off-trail alpine locations, the ZG Trek features good ankle support without being overly aggressive. That support extends over the ankle and up the leg to a degree, but not so much that it feels like it’s impeding your natural stride in any way.

This helps to make this boot a great choice for those who are taking on serious hikes, but it may be overkill for someone who just wants to take short walks down easy trails without much in the way of challenging terrain.

That extra stability does come in handy when carrying a heavy pack though, which should help the ZG Trek become a popular model with the backpacking crowd.

Tipping the scales at 2 pounds, 12 ounces (1.2 kg) these aren’t the lightest boots on the trail. Then again, considering what they are designed to do, you most likely don’t want something overly light anyway.

Weight-weenies will want to stick to trail runners and minimalist boots, but the rest of us will appreciate the rugged polyurethane underpinnings that will not only keep our feet well protected from rocks and other items but will ensure that this boot continues to be comfortable to wear for years to come.

Tons of Performance for the Money

The Scarpa ZG Trek GTX hits the sweet spot in terms of affordability, performance, and design.

Yes, there are lighter and less expensive hiking shoes on the market, and many of them are perfectly fine for the day hiker who is just looking for a nice, gentle walk in nature. But for those who are a bit more adventurous and are looking to take things beyond the trail, this is a boot that will provide outstanding performance and long-term durability, at a good price.

Beyond that, however, this is a boot that will also provide confidence and support to see you through adventures that can take you to some far-flung places. Whether that is thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail or to the summit of Kilimanjaro is totally up to you. Just rest assured, the ZG Trek GTX is up for the adventure as long as you are too.

Our take When the going got rough, we reached for the ZG Trek . Its over-the-ankle cuff is the highest in test, which we appreciated while wearing heavy packs and fighting rocks and roots on Connecticut’s 24-mile Mohawk Trail. A grid of denser material on the sides of the boot’s suede upper creates an exoskeleton that adds stability under big loads; this design provides additional support without adding a lot of weight. “These boots held my ankles in place and prevented toe bashing on a steep descent down Mt. Liberty,” said one New Hampshire tester.

The details A stiff, nylon insole adds bonus protection underfoot (though it might take some getting used to), while a TPU toecap wards off rocks. The PU midsole is built for long miles and years of use under a heavy pack.

Trail cred “I tromped up a steep stream in the White Mountains, and these boots held me upright even over uneven rocks covered with flowing water,” our New Hampshire tester says.

Scarpa ZG Trek GTX Men’s Boot

• Scarpa ZG Trek GTX Men's Boot Review

For a number of years I have very much been a dedicated trail runner user for my hikes. The only reason I ever tend to use a boot, which is rare, is when the environmental conditions demand it such as:

• I need supreme ankle support when walking over boulder fields
• I need/want excellent traction
•  I want a boot that will keep my feet dry and warm through wet/cold/snowy conditions

So when I decided to walk the 480 km Tasmanian Trail during wintertime there was a high likelihood of deep soft snow in some areas. So I quickly pivoted from a trail runner to a boot. This is where things get hard with my decision to change to a boot less than one week out from the start of the hike; I can hear you gasp ‘but what about wearing them in?’.

Firstly, in choosing footwear I use a size 15 US (size 50 European) and for those of you with similar size feet, you will know how hard that can be in finding options. If you’re a male with size 12 US or above feet you know your foot sizing falls in the bottom 2%. Size 15s are almost unicorn status. If I had a couple of months’ notice my choice would have been slightly broader. But after a quick search of the internet and a couple of phone calls I identified two options, the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Men’s Boot, and the Scarpa ZG Trek GTX Men’s Boot. These were the only boots available in my size on short notice; or for that matter medium to long term availability as well. In addition, I also have a broad forefoot which narrows the selection even further given many boots are made for narrow to mid-width feet.

After a visit to my local outdoor supplier and 30 minutes of testing I chose the Scarpa ZG Trek GTX Men’s Boot for the following reasons:

• Extremely comfortable fit straight out of the box providing excellent cushioning
• Reasonably priced for a mid-weight boot
• Reasonable width (although the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Men’s Boot was a broader fit)

After wearing these boots for 200+ km how did they go?

First up the recommendation is to ‘wear in’ boots before hiking in them but I pretty much went straight into 20+ km days without any problems and in trying them on in-store I could tell that comfort and fit wasn’t going to be an issue. The other boot I tried on, the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Men’s Boot, while a broader fit, didn’t feel as comfortable which is why I ruled them out. Having said that if you have a really broad foot then this option is worth considering.

From a wear perspective if you look at the images below you can see that these boots have slight curve to the sole rather than a flat sole. When you walk in them they provide a ‘rocker motion’ which is a way of saying that they roll as you walk which can be a bit odd if you have never worn this type of boot before. This sole is meant to help with planter fasciitis as it limits the motion of the ankle and mid foot but as I have never had that issue, I couldn’t say if it does or not. It doesn’t take long for you to notice the roll to your gait and as boots go, they are pretty comfortable.

These boots are a full height boot and have a padded ankle collar for comfort and excellent ankle support. The lacing system is reasonably common on most boots and while it doesn’t have the pulley system that the more expensive Scarpa SL Activ  have, they are an easy to lace boot. To complete the construction, the toe and heel protection do the job well and not once did my feet every feel under threat against the terrain. In addition, I had no issues with blisters and only minor issues with dead toenails with these boots even given I wore them straight out of the box with no real wear-in period.

Now some people may be surprised that I have classed this as a mid-weight boot but when compared to my heavy-weight Scarpa SL Activ Boot which are around 400 grams heavier, they definitely sit in the middle weight range. These boots have a suede upper as opposed to a full leather and feel comfortable on. I got to test out the waterproofing on this trail with a reasonable amount of rain and for good measure, I managed to sink into mud and cow poo over the top of one boot and yes it did fill my boot up but moisture didn’t penetrate the boot material itself.

The Scarpa ZG Trek GTX Men’s Boot sits in the middle pricing as you would expect with the features on offer with a recommended RRP of AUD$489.99 but you can usually find these at a cheaper price. Considering the features and the durability of these boots, they are great value for money. These are also one of those rare boots that go up to size 50 although you may need to look around to find them or else do a special order.

Now let’s look at the negatives. From my perspective I identified two negatives with these boots. The first was that they aren’t as grippy as other Scarpa boots I have tried. Every so often I found myself losing traction in conditions that I really shouldn’t have. It’s not a deal breaker but if supreme grip over a variety of terrain is something that is essential, spend the additional money for the Scarpa SL Activ Boot . The second negative isn’t specific to this model but rather all heavier boots which tend to slow you down. I found I couldn’t travel as fast or as far as I would in my trail runners which weigh in around half of the weight of these boots. In fact when I returned home and put my trail runners on for a walk, I felt like I wasn’t wearing any footwear at all – the weight difference was so noticeable.

My last issue is that in hot weather, your feet will sweat but this is also not something unique to these particular boots but mid to heavy-weight boots in general. This sweating has the potential to create hot spots and blisters if you are not careful although I rarely ever wear them in excessively hot conditions.

This is a great boot option from Scarpa and particularly if you have big beefy feet like me. The Scarpa ZG Trek GTX Boot will now become my go-to boot for those rare times I need waterproof and/or snow proof option.

• A special upper design over the flex area that allows for natural angle variation between your foot and leg while walking. When I first put these boots on I noticed an almost ‘rocker’ motion similar to my mountaineering boots
• Ergonomic Autofit padded collar made from elastic fabric for perfect ankle wrapping
• Speed lacing system for quick and easy lace adjustment
• 3D TPU toe cap for ultimate protection
• GORE-TEX Performance Comfort lining for durable waterproofing in all kinds of outdoor activites (even the most adverse weather conditions)
• Double-density PU midsole for optimum cushioning. In fact they feel as comfortable as more expensive offerings from Scarpa
• Comfort-Flex Plus insole with a compressed felt upper coating
• Vibram Salix/XS Trek outsole with pronounced lugs for great grip across all terrain
• Heel Tension support system that lends lateral stability to your feet
• Impact technology that absorbs negative impacts with the ground to increase shock absorption.
• We Don't Like
• The weight! These boots are more than twice the weight of my go-to trail runners so they will slow you down
• The price! On the medium side of the price spectrum at $489.99.00 but if you are not desperate you can find then on sale at least once or twice a year
• Traction – not as good at Scarpa’s more expensive SL Activ Boot
• Runs hot in high temperatures
• All types of walking, hiking and backpacking where stability and ankle protection are crucial
• For when you don’t want to cover big miles with any speed
• For the colder, wetter conditions when you want dry feet day in, day out
• For when you want a comfortable heavier grade boot without having to mortgage your house

It seemed like a good idea at the time....

This blog follows my ramblings and musings as I continue on my writing journey, and one day hopefully become a published author. There will be trials and tribulations and no little humor and if I manage to make someone smile along the way then that's all to the good. It's not all about writing though, and other subjects such as scale modelling and life in general also feature.

SCARPA TREK GTX HIKING BOOT REVIEW

Update. -  So it's taken nearly six months of constant use before I had anything negative to say about these boots and even then it's only a minor point in that one of the original laces failed. This came about when the outer beading unraveled  itself rendering the lace useless. I say its only a minor point but at the same time if you spent £220 on a pair of shoes and the laces failed after six months you'd probably be a bit miffed. Something for Mr Scarpa to think about maybe. As it is I replaced the original laces with a leather pair which was an altogether better idea. Should you find yourself in a same position the replacement laces need to be at least 120cm long.

My old Scarpa boots have finally died and with a heavy heart I began the marathon task of looking for a replacement. This usually involved hours of internet searches and reading unsuitable reviews.
