Great Day touring the Lower Lakes

We went on the Lower Lakes Cruise which was excellent. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We were lucky the weather was perfect! The Captains and staff of both boats were very informative and pleasant. The morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea that was supplied was excellent. We would definitely recommend this cruise and may consider doing it again ourselves.

My husband and I made this trip with our 5-year-old granddaughter, and we had a wonderful time. The people here are so friendly, and the commentary was awesome. We still learned something new. Wow, the Coorong is so beautiful and we saw so many birds. Our granddaughter loved the black swans with their children. There was a delicious light meal for lunch containing a noodle salad, a fresh salad, a roll, three different kinds of cold meat, a piece of cheese, crackers and a chocolate. After a wonderful excursion on land over a dune to the Southern Ocean, where we were introduced to the outback tucker, we had according to my husband the best coffee outside our home ... We three had so much fun. We will definitely do it again very soon.

Spirit of the Coorong

Spirit of the Coorong operate 1.5, 3.5 and 6 hour cruises departing from the historic port of Goolwa, 90 km south of Adelaide.

Cruise to the Murray Mouth on the 1.5 hour Murray Mouth cruise, or across the Murray Mouth and into the wetland wilderness of the Coorong National Park on a 3.5 hr Coorong Discovery or 6 hour Coorong Adventure cruise.

Visit the area where both Storm Boy films were filmed, by the spectacular 90 mile beach. Look for the Storm Boy inspired character Mr Percival. The long, narrow, Coorong wetland lagoon complex extends almost 150 kilometres from the Murray Mouth and is a special place of great beauty and tranquility. The book, and later the movie Storm Boy were based in the Coorong wetland area.

Recognised for spectacular sand-dune scenery and internationally significant as a migratory wader and waterfowl refuge, the Coorong is spiritually significant to the local Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal people and has archaeological sites attesting to Aboriginal occupation and use of the area over many thousands of years.

Enjoy the Captain’s commentary on the Aboriginal and European history, ecology and bird life of the area. Guided walk(s), a delicious lunch, and afternoon tea are included.

COORONG  &  LOWER LAKES  EXPERIENCE   

Board either 'Spirit of the Coorong' or 'Spirit of the Murray' from the Historic Goolwa Wharf to begin your Lower Lakes and Coorong Experience. 

Travelling upstream you will view the Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island waterfront whilst passing the Lower Murray tributaries of Currency Creek and Finniss River. Continuing upstream we pass the township of Clayton Bay and the private islands: Goose, Goat and Rat Islands.

We head past Point Sturt into Lake Alexandrina, Australias largest freshwater lake, at Point Mcleay view (from the water) the first Aboriginal Mission in Australia “Raukkan”. We then pass the Historic Point Malcolm Lighthouse and the township of Narrung as we enter the “Narrows” which join Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert. 

We then cross Lake Albert to Meningie and board our coach to travel the short 25 kms by land to Long Point on the Coorong.

At Long Point, board 'Spirit of the Coorong' and cruise through the stunning Coorong National Park. Head towards the Murray Mouth, passing the barrages Tauwitchere and Ewe Island. Then onto the old fishing village of “Sleep Hollow”.

Continue cruising passing by Mundoo Channel and to the mouth of the Mighty Murray River, where you will hear the tragic history of this iconic site. We continue past the mouth into the lock of the Goolwa Barrage and return to the departure point The Goolwa Wharf at approx 4pm. 

*The tour also operates in a reverse intinerary.

• If you have friends booking onto this tour, ensure you all choose the same departure time to be together!

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are included during the cruise and the captain provides an informative commentary throughout the day.
