DAY 1 - Departure

Today, we depart Albuquerque for Italy.

DAY 2 - Arrival

We arrive in Sicily and are transported to our hotel. We will have a welcome dinner.

DAY 3 - Taormina

This morning, we visit Taormina with a private guide who will show us the town. The highlight is the ancient Greek Theatre in Taormina.

DAY 4 - Valley of the Temples

Today we will have private guide take us through the Valley of the Temples , where we will also enjoy a two course lunch. Tonight, dinner will be at the hotel.

DAY 5 - Mount Etna

Today we visit a village at the base of Mt. Etna. We will have an opportunity to taste and experience local foods, like honey, olive oils, olives, and wine. We will also sample local cannolis at a bakery.

DAY 6 - Transfer to Matera

We will transfer to Messina this morning. From here, we will take a ferry to Villa San Giovanni, and after arrive at our hotel in Matera.

DAY 7 - Guided Tour of Matera

A local guide will take us on a private tour of Matera this morning. Later, we will visit the Casa Grotto and Chiesa Grotto before returning to our hotel for dinner.

DAY 8 - Lecce, Alberobello, and Ostuni

This morning we will transfer from Matera to Lecce. While in route, we will stop the in the towns of Alberobello and Ostuni. A guide will take us on a private tour of Alberobello where we will experience unique architecture.

DAY 9 - Tour of Lecce

Our morning will be filled with a private tour of Lecce. We will visit a famous Cathedral in Lecce before lunch. This afternoon will be on your own in Lecce.

DAY 10 - Excursion to Otranto

Our adventure today takes us to the town of Otranto. We will visit an Aragonese Castle before heading to a wine tasting that features lunch.

DAY 11 - Sorrento and Polignano

We will transfer to Sorrento with a stop in Polignano today and indulge a 3-course lunch.

DAY 12 - Amalfi Coast

Our day features a private tour of the Amalfi Coast. We will have an opportunity to taste limoncello while here. A boat ride will take us from Amalfi to Maiori.

DAY 13 - Pompeii and Naples

Today we visit famed Pompeii and Naples. We will have a guide take us through Pompeii to learn its history. Following this, we will have another guided tour of Naples. Dinner tonight will feature a pizza cooking class and tasting.

DAY 14 - Capri and Anacapri

We will take a boat excursion to the villages of Capri and Anacapri. Tonight, we will have a farewell dinner in Sorrento.

DAY 15 - Departure

We will transfer to the Naples airport and fly home today.

Expectations: The tour includes well-paced walking tours with regular breaks. Up to 2-3 hours of walking each day. To fully take advantage of all this tour has to offer, guests need to be able to walk longer distances, climb several flights of stairs and navigate steps and uneven terrain walking for extended periods of time over more difficult terrain (e.g. cobblestones, city hills, stairs without handrails, limited or no access to elevators). Your itinerary can include significant changes in temperature and altitude and may require a higher number of longer travel days with morning and/or evening activities. Most trips will feature long touring days, many full-day excursions and a full and active itinerary with a faster pace and longer distances. Excursions require standing and walking to city centers where coaches are prohibited.

Appropriate for: Travelers who are physically fit, expect a vigorous pace and enjoy participating in two to three hours of physical activity per day.

For your reference, we send to you a detailed itinerary approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the scheduled tour departure. This has day-by-day times and events, hotel information where you can be reached in case of an emergency, and airline information.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

It is always a good idea to carry on your person a list of medications that you are taking and an emergency contact phone number while you are traveling. And we suggest making a copy of the itinerary and provide it to a friend or family member.

AIRLINE TICKETS

You will be issued your boarding pass the morning of our departure, after your arrival at the Albuquerque International Sunport. If you have a frequent flyer number, or a TSA number, please call our office at least 3 days prior to the tour to ensure we can note these in your reservation.

If you are joining the tour from locations other than Albuquerque, we make other arrangements for you to join the tour. Please call our office for more details.

AIRPORT SECURITY

Do not forget to bring your government issued picture ID to show at the airport. A Driver’s License or Passport is preferred. If you do not have the proper ID, the airline will turn you away.

We have arranged for handling for one piece of luggage per person regarding the skycaps (where available) and hotels. If you check through luggage note that the maximum weight for the checked piece of luggage is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). If your bag weighs over 50 pounds the airlines will levy an extra fee that you will be responsible to pay. If you feel the need to lock your checked through luggage and your bag is searched, your lock could be damaged in the process. You can purchase a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) accepted and recognized lock at any luggage store. Make sure you ask for a TSA approved lock. These locks are the kind that TSA screeners can open by using a special tool without breaking. Passengers can carry-on 1 bag (dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches), plus a personal type bag, like a purse. We advise that you pack your carry-on lightly. There are restrictions regarding your carryon baggage and contents due to enhanced security

CHECKED BAGGAGE FEES

On our scheduled airline for this tour, passengers receive one free checked luggage for the flight. Additional pieces of luggage will cost extra beyond the first piece.

GRATUITIES/ITEMS INCLUDED IN PRICE

All hotel baggage handling fees are included. We also include basic gratuities for the Tour Director, Coach Driver, Livery Drivers and local Tour Guides. If someone has truly gone above and beyond additional tipping is permitted, but never required.

LODGING REQUESTS

If you would like to request special accommodations at the hotel(s) where we are lodging, please call us as soon as possible and we will forward these requests for you. The phone numbers of the hotel(s) where we are staying are listed on the itinerary.

Many hotels around the country have instituted a "reconditioning fee" of $300 or more that is levied upon a guest that smokes in a non-smoking room. If this occurs during our tour you will be responsible for paying this fee to the hotel prior to check-out.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Europe. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve reserved one of our Europe tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

• Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Europe, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
• Layers. For tours of Europe, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
• Comfortable walking shoes. Because you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides while on your trip, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential. Whether hitting the landmarks of London or on a walking tour of Amsterdam, you’ll be glad you brought your most comfortable footwear.
• Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on any of our Europe trips.
• Full-coverage layers for religious sites. In Europe, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and entrance may be denied on this basis.

Europe travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom. 

To determine whether the country you're traveling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.  

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries. 

Can I use my cell phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your cell phone while traveling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi). 

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries. 

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked. 

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500. 

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated. 

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses. 

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities. 

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden. 

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travelers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on traveling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognize this. 

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Andalucia, Spain

Known for its beautiful beaches, the coastline of Spain’s Andalucia region is among the best summer destinations in Europe!

Andalucia is the southernmost region of Spain, and it offers stunning natural beauty surrounded by whitewashed villages, along with a hefty dose of that famous Spanish sunshine .

The most famous coastline in Andalucia for European summer getaways is the famous Costa del Sol, located between Malaga and Gibraltar.

Here, you can find some of the loveliest sandy beaches in Europe–and sandy beaches are far from a guarantee on the continent (though pebble beaches have their appeal as well).

As a bonus, an Andalucia vacation can be enjoyed for a fraction of what you might pay along the coast of nearby France or Italy.

Though Andalucia’s inland cities are less ideal places to visit in Europe in summer–beautiful cities like Seville and Granada (home to the famous Alhambra ) are scorching hot during the summer months–they can still make excellent additions to a trip to southern Spain if you’re willing to brave the heat!

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

Croatia’s sparkling coastline has propelled it from a popular summer destination for Europeans to widespread international fame in recent decades (okay–the coastline and Game of Thrones), and it is easily one of the best places to visit in Europe in summer.

This is one of our personal favorite destinations in Europe, and we will never be done revisiting this magnificent coastline.

Whether you want to stroll the city walls of Dubrovnik , admire Diocletian’s Palace in Split , or go swimming off the coast of Hvar or Korčula, there’s no doubt that Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast makes for a magical summer trip.

If you’re a sailor at heart, Croatia’s whopping 79 islands are also a legendary place to explore by boat!

Famous Plitvice Lakes National Park makes a fantastic inland detour during your summer escape!

Algarve, Portugal

Located in the southwestern corner of Portugal, the Algarve is a once-secret European summer destination that has rapidly increased in popularity.

The Algarve’s increased popularity is thanks in large part to its rugged beauty, low prices (which, it must be noted, are rising as fast as its popularity), and its phenomenal rock formations along the coast.

Though you can find charming towns like Lagos , as well as pretty cities like Faro, Portugal , and plenty of sandy beaches here, the real attractions are the sea caves, arches, and rocky cliffs that give the Algarve a unique beauty among the other best places to visit in Europe in summer.

Be sure not to miss the stunning Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (part of which overlooks the famous Praia do Marinha) or the iconic Benagil Cave when visiting!

However, be sure to keep in mind that the Algarve’s beaches, while generally sandy and gorgeous, tend to have colder water than many other summer destinations.

If you’re from a northern climate, you’ll almost certainly be glad to go for a dip, but for those accustomed to warm waters, you may find it a bit chilly!

Sicily, Italy

Italy’s southernmost region is an absolute delight to visit in summer.

Featuring phenomenal Italian beach towns , excellent food and wine, a stunning volcano, and remarkably low prices (especially as compared to much of the rest of Italy) Sicily makes for a fantastic European summer road trip opportunity.

While you’re there, don’t miss the beaches of Cefalu and Avola, the gorgeous towns of the Val di Noto, the bustling streets of Palermo , or the Greek theatre and beautiful views from Taormina .

Travelers with more time to experience the beauty of Sicily in summer will also want to see Siracusa, the Aeolian Islands, and Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples!

Provence, France

Featuring sprawling lavender fields, delightfully charming small villages, and some of the absolute best farmer’s markets around, Provence has long been a classic European summer destination for a very good reason.

For the best chance to see lavender fields at their peak, plan your trip between mid-June and mid-July.

Even if you miss the lavender fields, Provence still has plenty to offer!

And, Provence’s natural beauty is remarkable beyond the lavender fields, too!

Destinations like the Verdon Gorge and Calanques National Park are also among the best places to visit in southern France .

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Italy’s premier coastline has been one of the most highly sought-after summer destinations in Europe for thousands of years, luring everyone from Roman Emperors to the stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age to modern travelers.

With its dramatic cliffs, azure waters, famous cuisine, eye-catching art, and beautiful villages, it’s easy to see why travelers have long found these shores hard to resist.

Ironically, traditional beaches are not the calling card of this famous “beach” destination!

There are a few beaches around, sure, and plenty of places to swim, but on the Amalfi Coast, dramatic landscapes supersede places to lounge on the sand.

Though not technically part of the Amalfi Coast itself, it’s worth mentioning the legendary Capri here, as well as the ever-famous Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius , both of which are popular day trips near the Amalfi Coast.

Other side trips nearby include Naples (worlds apart and yet well worth visiting!), Herculaneum, Ischia, and Procida–just to name a few.

French Riviera

Much like the Amalfi Coast, the French Riviera is absolutely iconic among summer destinations in Europe.

From St. Tropez to Cannes to Nice to Menton and beyond, the French Riviera is known for its exclusive beaches, immense beauty, historic cities, and many, many yachts.

Visitors to the French Riviera can even squeeze in a trip to one of the smallest countries in the world as part of their trip–Monaco makes an easy day trip from Nice!

A summer trip to the South of France often combines time spent both in the lavender-strewn inland areas of Provence as well as the French Riviera, and both are well worth a visit during summer in Europe!

Turquoise Coast, Turkey

Also known as the Turkish Riviera, Turkey’s phenomenal Turquoise Coast is located in the southwest of the country and offers gorgeous beaches along both the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.

Easily one of the most beautiful places in Turkey , this is a coastline you won’t forget anytime soon.

With picturesque small towns, majestic ruins (including Ephesus), and almost shockingly low prices as compared to other nearby beach destinations, the Turquoise Coast is an underrated summer destination perfect for travelers looking to get off the beaten path in Europe (or, in this case,  near  Europe).

Technically, the only part of Turkey that is part of the continent of Europe is a small piece that includes the far west of the country and half of Istanbul.

However, since Turkey in general (especially Istanbul and Cappadocia ) are often included on a trip to Europe, we think it’s worth including the Turquoise Coast on this list of the best summer destinations in Europe… just in case it tempts you to add it to your plans!

Ireland is one of our personal favorite places to visit in Europe in summer!

While it may not be a classic summer destination in a sundresses-and-beach-days sense (I’ve definitely spent more time wearing raincoats than bathing suits in Ireland during the summer), the Emerald Isle absolutely shines during the summer months.

Often, it shines quite literally: the late spring and summer offer the highest chances of sunny days you’ll ever see in Ireland!

Pair that with phenomenal natural sights, great food, and adorable villages such as Doolin and Cobh , and it’s easy to fall in love with Ireland.

While popular sights like the Ring of Kerry and Cliffs of Moher will certainly be crowded, Ireland overall can be a great place to escape Europe’s crowded beach towns during the summer months.

Even in June, July, and August, it’s very easy to find beautiful places that you can have all to yourself on the Emerald Isle (and if you need to help, check out some of Ireland’s hidden gems ).

Slovenia’s tiny coastline often means that it’s overlooked in favor of neighboring Croatia for a European summer trip.

But, packed with everything from a charming seaside to dramatic mountaintops to a quirky capital city all packed into one tiny country, it absolutely shouldn’t be!

Our first summer trip to Slovenia was enough to make it one of our favorite countries to explore, and we highly recommend a Slovenia road trip to travelers looking for beautiful nature.

From the rightfully famous Lake Bled to the jaw-dropping hikes in Triglav National Park to the beauty of the Soca River Valley, Slovenia is beautiful from all angles.

And, its towns and cities have plenty to offer, too: be sure to relax by the sea in Piran and check out the funky capital of Ljubljana .

In many cases, the easiest way to get to Slovenia from outside of Europe is to fly into Venice –so if you prefer, you can easily combine a trip to Slovenia with one to Italy!

Greek Isles

Boasting a seemingly endless number of islands, a couple hundred of them populated, the many, many islands of Greece are a classic summer vacation opportunity in Europe.

Narrowing down exactly where to go is incredibly difficult, but popular options include Santorini for its classic white-and-blue villages and cliffs and Mykonos for its windmills and its famous party scene.

Also consider Corfu for its beautiful water, a touch of Venetian history, its proximity to Albania, and–very important when planning a multi-stop trip–its easy flight connections across Europe.

Greece’s largest island, Crete, which boasts everything from historical fortresses to some of the best beaches in the country, is also a fantastic choice.

For a bucket-list-worthy summer in Europe that you’ll never forget, consider renting a sailboat and hitting up several islands by sea (you can charter a boat with or without a captain).

Balearic Islands, Spain

Located off the east coast of Spain, you’ve no doubt heard of the Balearic Islands Archipelago, even if you’ve never heard the name before.

This is where you can find the infamous party island of Ibiza, the beautiful and popular Mallorca, and the slightly-less-known Menorca, among several others.

If you’re searching for some of the most stunning beach towns in Spain , the Balearic Islands are an excellent place to look.

Even if you’re not the partying type, though, Spain’s Balearic Islands still have a lot to offer for a summer vacation in Europe, including plenty of quiet corners, epic viewpoints, beautiful beaches, and quiet villages.

Cinque Terre, Italy

Nestled along Italy’s Ligurian coast, the famous villages of Cinque Terre are among the most picturesque places to visit in Europe in summer–as long as you’re willing to battle the crowds!

Immensely popular but beautiful enough to be worth the hassle, Cinque Terre is known for its colorful villages, quaint harbors, delicious pesto and seafood, and amazing hiking opportunities.

Head to Monterosso al Mare for the best beach, and Vernazza and Manarola for the best views–in our biased opinion, anyway!

While it’s popular to take a day trip to Cinque Terre , we highly recommend spending at least a night or two there if possible–experiencing Cinque Terre in the summer without the crowds of day trippers is a special experience!

The United Kingdom

From the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands to the quiet beauty of the Cotswolds , and from the hustle and bustle of London and the charm of Cambridge to the beaches of Brighton, there is no better time to enjoy (comparatively) warm temperatures and sunny weather in the United Kingdom than during the summer months.

True, the UK doesn’t have the best reputation for its weather–but visiting during the summer will absolutely give you the best shot at experiencing beautiful days!

Whether you want to explore one of the best road trips in the UK or enjoy a train journey across the countryside (or both!), you’re bound to have a memorable trip.

Bay of Kotor, Montenegro

Stare out across the beautiful Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, and you may just think you’re looking out over a fjord.

Located within a couple of hours of popular Dubrovnik in Croatia, the towns along the Bay of Kotor feel remarkably similar to its famous neighbor–but with far fewer crowds and much smaller price tags.

Beautiful Kotor (don’t miss climbing to San Giovanni’s Fortress while there!), Perast, Tivat, and more, all offer a chance to experience a beautiful corner of the Balkans.

And, while Kotor is increasing in popularity among cruise ships, the Bay of Kotor itself is still a relatively quiet place.

If you set off on a Montenegro road trip this summer, you can even extend beyond the bay–Tara River Canyon and Durmitor National Park are also must-see destinations in Montenegro.

Jungfrau Region, Switzerland

I am convinced that Switzerland’s Jungfrau region–located around (literally, above) Interlaken–is paradise on Earth in the summer.

If you’re dreaming of the Alps, check into a hotel in Wengen, Murren, or Grindelwald (for the best views) or Interlaken (for a bit more selection) or Lauterbrunnen (to be in the literal center of the action) and have the trip of your dreams.

Switzerland’s legendarily efficient trains and gondolas mean that wherever you stay, the region is at your fingertips.

Hiking from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidigg,  riding the highest train in Europe to Jungfraujoch  (aka the “Top of Europe”), eating daily fondue, walking from Murren to  Gimmelwald , and riding a historic cogwheel train to Schynige Platte are just a few of the unforgettable experiences you’ll find here.

Whether you want to stretch your physical limits or simply admire the Alpine views while munching on local cheese–or both, of course!–Switzerland’s pristine Jungfrau region is undoubtedly one of the absolute best places to visit in Europe in June, July, and August.

Albanian Riviera

Among all of these places to visit in Europe in summer, the Albanian Riviera is among the most offbeat for travelers hailing from outside the continent.

However, with shockingly low prices as compared to most of these summer destinations in Europe, absolutely stunning beaches, and plenty of beach towns to choose from, the Albanian Riviera has a lot to offer.

While flights into Albania can get a bit pricey (and many arrive in the capital of Tirana, far from the best beaches), Corfu, Greece is easily accessible by air and is located as little as a 30-minute ferry ride from the town of Sardana along the Albanian Riviera!

Iceland in summer is a land of magic.

This is the land of the midnight sun, natural hot springs, endless fields of blooming lupines, glaciers, unbelievably green landscapes, and of course, otherworldly waterfalls.

From horseback riding through majestic landscapes to snorkeling between tectonic plates to soaking in some of the world’s most beautiful hot springs to staring out over the golden light of the midnight sun long past an average person’s bedtime, taking an Iceland road trip in the summer is an unforgettable experience.

While you won’t be able to see the famous northern lights when visiting during summer, the midnight sun, easier driving conditions, and warmer weather (you’ll probably still need to bundle up a bit, though!) make visiting this stunning country in summer a very special experience.

We fell in love with Iceland in summer, and even if you only have a couple of days in Iceland , it’s absolutely worth exploring.

Puglia, Italy

Located on the “heel of the boot”, so to speak, the Puglia region of Italy is known for its lovely beaches, whitewashed villages, and delicious food (especially seafood and orecchiette pasta).

While what is arguably its most famous village, Alberobello, home of the trulli, is not on the coast at all, Puglia is generally seen as a beach destination in Europe.

While Puglia has been popular with European travelers for ages, its profile has been growing across the world–and it certainly deserves the attention!

Consider adding a stop in the haunting city of Matera, which is technically located next door in Basilicata but is a common addition to trips to Puglia! 

Faroe Islands

Far-flung and remote, if you’re looking for an uncrowded, offbeat, and spectacular summer vacation in Europe (and you’re not particularly attached to the idea of being warm), consider the Faroe Islands.

This self-governing archipelago of 18 islands is an administrative region of Denmark and is located (very) roughly halfway between Iceland and Norway.

Home to absolutely spectacular ocean views, soaring cliffs, thundering waterfalls, and some of the best bird-watching on the planet (hello puffins!), the Faroe Islands are perhaps the most unique travel destination on this list.

While they require a bit of money (prices are said to be on par with Norway, arguably the most expensive country to visit in Scandinavia ) and dedication to experience, they’re absolutely magnificent.

Prepare for crowds.

Summer is the busiest and most touristic season in Europe–and that’s especially true in coastal destinations like many listed here.

Visiting Europe in summer can be absolutely wonderful, but it comes with heavy crowds and high prices compared to the rest of the year.

If you’re headed to the beach, we recommend avoiding the month of August if you can.

August is when many Europeans take their annual beach vacations, and the beach towns are especially busy and expensive then.

If you do plan to take a European beach vacation in August, we highly recommend booking everything from your hotel to your rental car as far in advance as you can.

Consider the shoulder season.

If you’re looking for summer-like vibes in Europe but want to avoid the peak months of June, July, and August, we recommend September over May.

While both can work, September typically has more of a summer feeling in many of these places to visit in Europe than May does, with the added benefit of the water typically being warmer as it has had all season to heat up.

September is one of our favorite months to travel in Europe, and you absolutely can’t go wrong with a late summer trip then!

Book ahead, especially if you’re traveling to small towns.

Given the heavy crowds we mentioned above, it’s expected that hotels fill up more quickly than in other months, too.

For some of these summer destinations in Europe–especially small towns with limited lodging like Cinque Terre, certain Greek islands like Santorini and Mykonos, and the Amalfi Coast–that means it’s best to book as soon as you can commit to your dates.

With a limited amount of lodging available and primarily small, family-run properties with a handful of rooms catering to tourists as opposed to large hotels, smaller destinations quickly fill up.

Larger European beach cities like Nice and Barcelona will typically have more availability–but if you have your heart set on staying in a certain area or are on a budget, it will still be to your benefit to book your trip in advance!

… and not just for hotels.

In addition to hotels, consider booking major attractions ahead of time too–you’ll definitely want skip-the-line tickets for major attractions like the Colosseum and Eiffel Tower when visiting Europe in summer!

Also, consider that more specialized tours or places that limit the number of visitors like the Borghese Gallery and the Alhambra will sell out well in advance.

It pays to plan ahead when visiting Europe during its busiest months!

Be cautious of your belongings.

While you should always be wary of pickpockets while traveling (and perhaps even in your hometown), the particularly heavy crowds that populate many of the best places to visit in Europe during summer make hotspots like the Eiffel Tower, Colosseum, and the Acropolis even more attractive to savvy pickpockets.

This applies to basically any major tourist destination where thousands of visitors regularly pass through, and the more crowded it is, the more careful you should be!

Be extra careful with your valuables when in a dense crowd as you explore these summer destinations in Europe, and consider carrying an anti-theft backpack as well– we use this one and absolutely love it.

Don’t forget sun protection!

And not just for the beaches, either–it’s easy to lose track of time and get sunburned walking around beautiful cities, too.

Come prepared with your own hat and sunscreen if you can, especially if you’re visiting a beach or coastal area.

As in most places around the world, you’ll pay a pretty penny for sunscreen at the beach in Europe!

Consider concentrating your tourism outside of peak hours.

When visiting Europe during the height of summer, consider starting your mornings as early as possible, taking a break in the afternoon (ala a Spanish siesta or Italian riposo ), and then picking up your tourism again in the late afternoon/early evening.

This way, you can avoid the worst of the heat and crowds while maximizing the more comfortable time of day.

Of course, you don’t necessarily need to rest during the afternoon if you don’t want to–that can be a great time to hit an air-conditioned museum or relax on the beach!

Air conditioning is not a given.

When visiting Europe during the summer, double-check that your hotel or apartment before booking.

Air conditioning isn’t always standard when traveling in Europe, but it’s often very necessary in our opinion !

Keep church-appropriate clothing in mind.

While the strictness of the dress code varies across the continent, generally you’ll want to pack at least one outfit that covers your cleavage, shoulders, and knees for visiting churches.

Men can usually get away with shorts that hit at the knee, but not always.

When touring any of these places to visit in Europe in summer, keep that dress code in mind as you structure your days.

It’s absolutely no fun being turned away from a tour you expected to take because you dressed for the weather and not the church!

Gawd I’m desperate to go to Sicily. I think that’ll be my first place abroad when the lockdown lifts. Trying to decide where to go in Europe and although there are loads of other cool sounding places – I think Sicily is the one for me.

Albanian Riviera is absolutely breathtaking. Great seafood, great wines and great hospitality.

Absolutely! It was one of our “supposed tos” from 2020, we had planned to spend part of June there. Hopefully in the next couple of years we’ll make it.

Its the humidity, not the sun, that will soak you in an EU summer. We quickly learned to limit summer EU trips to the Alps– still humid but cooler.

Any thoughts on Greece during summer, everyone tells me its going to be hot, so unsure.

It all depends on your definition, I suppose! It also varies a lot by your destination–Athens will probably be uncomfortably hot (you’ll want to tour the Acropolis in the morning), but places like Santorini and Mykonos have average summer high temperatures in the mid-80s F or around 27 C.

If you want to visits lots of cities/inland areas and don’t have a high heat tolerance, spring or fall might be best. But if you’re hoping to see the islands and visit them at their most vibrant, summer is the most popular time to visit for a reason. 🙂

Best of Central Europe

I though the Intrepid tour was fantastic. The group leader did a great job in looking after us and providing us with good orientation in all the countries we visited. The only point that could be improved, was in relation to accommodation. In Prague, five people were placed in the one hotel with one bathroom and toilet. This is not really ideal, however, when we raised this issue, our group leader went out of his way to provide an alternate accommodation for my husband and I. I felt that this was really good and we were very pleased with the outcome. The other tour participants were great and I recommend this to anyone who is interested in a great holiday. European Delight

We really enjoyed our 16 Day tour from Rome to Paris. We met some lovely people and of course some tour guides are more experienced than others and we understand this. We hope to use Europomundo again in the future. The only complaint would be the Spanish translation seemed more detailed( went on longer than the English) as I don’t understand Spanish, I feel they were told more about the towns and cities than we were.

Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

12 best places in Europe for spring sun

Families of sun-seekers looking for an Easter break don’t have to endure a long-haul flight. There are plenty of places in Europe that are gearing up to be lovely and warm in the spring. Plus, in March and April the landscape is still green and flowers are beginning to open in the warmth – making Easter the ideal time for a sun holiday in Europe with the kids.

12/12  Mallorca, Balearics

Mallorca in the spring is an entirely different island from the one you’ll see in summer. There’s still a high chance of sun, as March temperatures are upwards of 20˚ in the south, and the transparent greeny blue of the Mediterranean is pretty much a constant all round the coast. But spring is the season for exploring the countryside, finding villages tucked off the tourist trail and finally understanding why the likes of Chopin and Miró loved this seductive Balearic best of all.

Palma’s urban beaches are quieter at this time of year and the city’s easier to enjoy. Down on the south coast, holiday-ready seaside towns still feel fresh and enthusiastic in the lead up to June. And even resorts like Magaluf are fun rather than frantic in the spring.

Cala d’Or in the south east is reliably good fun for families early in the season. But if you want authentic charm and a quick route from coast to country, think about Puerto de Antraitx to the west.

11/12  Tenerife, Canary Islands

The south west of Tenerife is always a good bet for winter warmth. Come March, temperatures are upwards of 20˚ with eight hours of sunshine. It only gets better and better in the lead up to May and summer holiday prices don’t really hit until June.

Most of the island’s bigger attractions are year-round now and spring is easily the best season for trekking in Mount Teide National Park or the Masca Valley. It’s also a good time to discover towns and villages off the beaten track and have beaches almost all to yourself. And, if you need to be reminded that there’s life beyond the tourists here, spending a few hours in colourful and cultured Santa Cruz or historic La Orotava should do the trick.

10/12  Seville, Andalusia

Early spring is by far the best time to visit Seville. Orange blossom season starts in the last days of February and by March the city’s drenched with the smell of citrus. Temperatures of 22˚ are warm enough for shorts and manageable for little ones, compared to highs of 40˚ that this part of Andalusia bakes in during July and August.

Despite the scorching summer heat, Seville is busy all year round, but you can grab a breather by visiting the Alcazar, Palacio de la Condesa de Lebrija, Torre del Oro and Plaza de España. Spend some crowd-free hours in the exceptional Museo de Bellas Artes and have a queue-free day at Aquapolis waterpark – it’s easily warm enough in the spring.

Unless you’re desperate to be swept up in one of Spain’s biggest and most emotional Santa Semana (Easter Holy Week) celebrations, avoid the Easter weekend in Seville. The Seville Fair usually begins two weeks after the Semana Santa and it’s great fun, but crazy busy, so probably best avoided if you’re after a quiet family holiday.

9/12 Southern Cyprus

The south of Cyprus is warm enough to add beaches into a spring holiday. Average temperatures range from 22˚ in March to highs of 27˚ in May. This means it’s a lovely time to visit the coast and even better for exploring the countryside, visiting mountain towns and villages and doing a bit of walking or cycling. Cyprus is too hot in July and August to stray far from the Med.

The ancient city of Paphos in the south west was the European Cultural Capital in 2017 and is worth seeing in advance of the summer crowds. Spring is also ideal for lively Larnaka, whether you want water sports or cultural icons like the Agios Lazarus church. It’s also the perfect time to visit Ayia Napa for waterparks and theme parks before hordes of 20-somethings turn up in June.

8/12  Malaga, Costa del Sol

If Malaga instantly makes you think of crowded sands and new-build apartments, you might want to look again at the undisputed capital of the Costa del Sol. Not only does the city celebrate its most famous son with one of finest Picasso museums in the world, it’s home to the only Pompidou Centre outside France, CAC Malaga and the Museo Carmen Thyssen (younger sister to Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza).

Give Malaga a chance in spring and it’s a lot easier to appreciate why the beaches have been holiday icons for over 50 years. Art and sunbathing aside, this is also the city to find outstanding Andalusian cooking in some of the region’s finest restaurants. They’re short on picture-menus, but even the starriest and most award-rich are relaxed, family-friendly and wonderful with kids.

7/12 Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Temperatures in Gran Canaria are often higher than Tenerife: comfortably reaching 22˚ in early March and climbing to above 25˚ in late May. One third of the island is a UNESCO biosphere and it has over 60km of beaches scattered round a dramatic coastline of soaring cliffs, sea stacks and vast dunescapes. So if you want warm and interesting this spring, the ‘other’ Canary is definitely worth a look.

The south coast is best for sun and family holidays in the next few months. It also happens to be where you’ll find the astonishing Dunas de Maspalomas, Playa des Ingles and a string of Mediterranean seaside towns to win you over with everything from early season water sports to dolphin cruises.

Las Palmas is an easy hour’s drive from lively southern resorts like Puerto Rico, Playa Taurito and Puerto de Mogán.   Spring weather couldn’t be better for walking, cycling and exploring in the impressive Pilancones and Tamadaba reserves, or climbing the Pico de las Nieves’ foothills.

If you don’t like the idea of betting everything on a beach holiday this spring, think multi-faceted Malta. The bold coastline is big enough to take advantage of every drop of heat and, with temperatures of 20˚ and rising in March, the odds of sun are good. And if it’s not seaside weather all the time, there’s always Valletta to keep you entertained with myths, legends and masses of historic nooks and crannies, ancient districts and deep drama.

Island hopping to Gozo and Comino makes for fun days out. Or, if you’ve a moment to spare, you might want to go in search of caves, grottos, lagoons, medieval towns, mighty cliffs and even mythical blue holes – you won’t have to look too hard for them.

5/12  Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Only 125km off the west coast of Africa, Lanzarote is the first Canary to warm up for spring and by mid-March temperatures are climbing from 22˚ and eight, unbroken hours of sunshine aren’t unusual.

The south east of the island is windiest: a relief in high summer but not what you want for a spring break. Instead, head west to pretty Playa Blanca on the Papagaya Coast. The beaches here are lovely and the resort manages to hold on to its small town charm and still come good on excellent hotels, restaurants and shops.

Spring is the time to brave the otherworldly volcanic landscape of Timinfaya National Park, less than 15 minutes drive from Playa Blanca. It’s also a good season for getting to know the island capital, Arrecife, for cycling on Lanzarote’s very bike-friendly roads and for off-season surf school rates on the north west coast. Don’t miss your chance to explore ancient Teguise and take the ferry and a picnic to the little island of Graciosa for the day.

4/12  Western Algarve

Western Algarve has the Iberian Peninsula’s best weather, basically better than anywhere else in Portugal, Spain and Andorra. Spring is no exception and resorts along the coast between Portimão and Lagos almost guarantee sun and blue skies with temperatures upwards of 22˚ from March onwards.

This dramatic stretch of the Algarve coastline is the place for sea stacks, rainbow coloured cliffs and beaches like Praia dos Três Irmãos and Praia da Rocha. Portimão and historic Lagos are lively without being overcrowded and sea views are the only distractions on local golf courses. Surfing is good in spring too and lessons are more affordable and easier to book. And if you want to really stretch your legs, the spectacular Alentejano e Costa Vicentina coastal reserve’s less than an hour’s drive west of Lagos.

3/12  Ibiza, Balearics

Spring is family time in Ibiza, when it’s too early for party people but sunny and warm on the southern beaches. It’s also the best season to get to know Ibiza Town and appreciate why it’s one of the most admired small cities in Spain. And March, April and May are great for sailing round the coast on local ferries, exploring the spring-flowered countryside and discovering hidden coves and tucked away villages that are too hot to seek out in summer.

Give San Antonio and Playa d’en Bossa a miss in spring and go for Santa Eulalia on the sheltered south east coast. The town is lively and interesting, the local craft market buzzes with bohemian shoppers and the beaches are soft white sand with gently shelfing waters and a healthy sprinkling of cute cafés and cheerful restaurants.

2/12 Sicily, Southern Italy

If spring isn’t spring without some serious celebrating in the mix, look to Sicily for almost back-to-back festivals. Holy Week is marked with processions and feasts in every town and village, Easter weekend is the time for spring lamb and rich Cassata all over the island and Noto is the place to visit for one of Italy’s most spectacular Infiorata in May.

Spring weather is warm and sunny enough to enjoy any number of beaches from awe-inspiring Scala dei Turchi to the long, golden sands of Sampieri. Temperatures of 22˚ are just about perfect for in-depth exploration round cities like Palermo and Catania. And if you want some serious heat, there isn’t a better time of year to introduce older kids to the rumbling might of magnificent Mount Etna.

1/12  Nice, Côte d’Azur

Wait until summer to visit Nice and you might not get the best impression of this warm, friendly Côte d’Azur legend. Once the glamorous, second-home owning celebs descend in July, the city changes entirely. It’s too hot and stuffy, everything is overpriced and good luck finding even a hint of local atmosphere.

A 680-year-old tourist attraction in Europe is getting a £1.7million renovation for the first time ever.

The Ponte Vecchio in Florence is one of the most iconic sights in the city and is living history going back to the Romans .

The bridge has survived floods, Allied bombing in the Second World War , and plenty of starry-eyed tourists stumbling over it and through the jewellery shops lining it.

The 30m structure is now set to see the biggest repair work completed in sixty years, with arches, the wing walls, paving stones and parapets to be restored.

Cracks will be filled in, grout will replaced, and weeds and moss are to be stripped away to leave the bridge looking spic and span.

The £1.7million project will begin this autumn and is expected to be completed by 2026.

“We are leaving an enormous legacy,” Dario Nardella, the city’s mayor, told The Times .

There has been a bridge in that spot since at least 123AD when it was commissioned by the emperor Hadrian.

Since then, several versions have bee washed away by floods until the current bridge was built in 1345.

The Ponte Vecchio was the only bridge in Florence that was not blown up by Nazis retreating from the British Army during the Second World War.

In 1966, the bridge was badly damaged in a flood that killed 100 people, but only limited restoration work was carried out. The bill will be split two ways between the council and Marchesi Antinori, a Florence wine company that is nearly as old as the bridge.

The bridge will remain open to shopkeepers and tourists.

Florence is a fabulous cultural city stuffed full of Renaissance gems.

But you don’t need to be able to afford a piece of posh artwork to go there for the weekend.

There is no better place to go for art lovers, with  Florence  being home to famous works from Michelangelo, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci.

And the  Italian  city is now easier to get to.

Earlier this year,  British Airways  launched new daily flights from  Heathrow  and Florence.

With far greater crowds in the summer, you’ll get cheaper flights and calmer streets in the autumn and beyond.

KYGO is returning to stages across the globe.

The DJ is going on tour with special guests Sofi Tukker, Gryffin, Sam Feldt, Zara Larsson, Klangkarussell, and more.

The tour will run from September through December, and the live shows are set to feature pyrotechnics, live instruments, blinding lights, and endless club bangers.

Ticketmaster ran presales throughout the week for fans to purchase tickets ahead of Friday's general sale.

Those who haven't had luck scoring seats can try again during tomorrow's sale at 10 am local time. There will be no presale code necessary to access the sale.
