  • If you have a Citi credit card that earns ThankYou points, you can book your travel with them.
  • The Citi Travel Portal is like an online travel agency, allowing you to make bookings with ease.
  • You can pay with points (worth 1 cent each), your Citi credit card, or a combination of both.

Citi ThankYou Rewards is a flexible points program that allows you to earn points from eligible Citi credit cards and banking products. You can redeem points in a number of ways, including for travel, cash back, or gift cards.

One of the best ways to use points is for travel, either by transferring Citi ThankYou points to airline partners for award flights (only available with certain Citi credit cards), or through an even easier option available to all program members — the Citi Travel portal.

Citi Travel recently got a big overhaul, and it's now partnered with Booking.com and powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda technology. Here's what to know about the new Citi Travel portal and what to expect if you decide to book.

Overview of the Portal

The Citi Travel Portal is an online travel booking platform that works in a similar way to Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) like Orbitz or Expedia. You can search for flights, hotels, rental cars, and attractions based on your destination, travel dates, and other preferences, and you have the option to pay with Citi ThankYou points, your Citi card, or a combination of both.

Benefits of Booking Through the Portal

Although Citi Travel doesn't get as much attention as American Express Travel or the Chase Ultimate Rewards® Travel Portal , it has many of the same benefits:

  • You can book travel with no blackout dates
  • There's no need to worry about loyalty program award charts or availability
  • Your points are worth a flat 1 cent each toward travel, and you can combine them with cash if you don't have enough for a booking
  • You'll still earn airline miles and elite-qualifying miles when you book flights, even when you pay entirely with points
  • It's possible to pool Citi points from different credit cards (or even share with friends and family who have Citi ThankYou accounts)

A downside to using the Citi Travel Portal is you won't earn points or elite status credit for hotel stays, and you might not have your elite status recognized because it's considered a third-party booking.

If you're looking for the easiest way to cash in Citi points for travel, the Citi ThankYou Travel Portal is a better choice for most people. That said, it's possible to get more than 1 cent per point in value if you skip the Citi Portal and instead transfer your points at a 1:1 ratio to an airline or hotel partner for award travel — but that involves more legwork.

The full range of partners is available if you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (no longer available to new applicants). Otherwise, JetBlue, Choice, and Wyndham are the only airline and hotel options, with a reduced transfer ratio.

How to Log In

To access the Citi Travel Portal, you must be a Citi customer with a ThankYou rewards account. Once you sign in to your Citi account online and click the "View/Redeem" button in the rewards section, you'll land on a screen with several redemption options. Click "Book Travel" in the lower left-hand corner.

Alternatively, you can get to the same screen by signing in with your Citi login details at ThankYou.com .

Once you click "Book Travel," you'll be prompted to select the Citi card account you want to book with if you have multiple Citi cards. Then you'll land on the main Citi Travel search screen.

How to Book Flights with Citi Travel

To search for flights, click the "Flights" tab and enter your departure and destination airport and dates of travel. You'll also have options to select round-trip or one-way flights, class of service, number of passengers, and if you prefer non-stop flights. Then hit "Search."

Next, you'll see a list of flight search results — starting with your outbound flight — which you can sort by price, number of stops, departure time, arrival time, duration, or "best overall" (cheap, short flights). On the left sidebar, there are also filters for the departure and arrival times, airline, number of stops, price range, and total journey duration. To choose a flight, click on the "Select" button, then repeat the process for your return leg if you've searched for a round-trip itinerary.

Once you've selected your flights, you'll be prompted to enter passenger details and will be given options to upgrade your fare (most folks will skip this step). Then, on the final booking screen, you'll have the opportunity to select your payment method — either using your Citi card, ThankYou points, or a combination of both.

How to Book Hotels with Citi Travel

The process of finding a hotel to book through the Citi Travel portal is similar to searching for flights. After selecting the "Hotels" option from the main menu, enter your destination, stay dates, and the number of guests in the search fields.

The results page allows you to sort by property class, price, distance, hotel name, and recommended results. You can filter by price, class, TripAdvisor rating, amenities, nearby landmarks, and even hotels offering deals. One useful feature is the ability to quickly identify properties that have discounted rates by looking for the "Sale" flag in the corner of the hotel listing.

To find out more about the hotel you're interested in, click on the hotel name and you'll be shown different bed options, rate types with cancellation policies, and available packages (breakfast included, for instance) if applicable. Select "Check out" next to the room you want to book. You'll then be asked for guest details (name, address, phone number, and email).

Once you've entered your information, you'll come to the final booking screen where, again, you can choose your method of payment.

How to Rent a Car with Citi Travel

Searching for a car rental through Citi Travel is similarly easy. Once you've clicked "Cars" on the main menu, enter your pick-up location (you can select a different drop-off location if needed), rental dates and times, and the driver's age.

The results list allows you to sort by price, rental company, or car type.

Once you find a car you like, click on its listing to learn more about the rental and enter the driver's name and details.

On the final booking screen, you'll choose your method of payment — again, your Citi card, ThankYou points, or a combination of both.

How to Book Attractions Through Citi Travel

Select the "Attractions" tab on the main search page, and enter the city name where you want to search.

Depending on the destination, you'll get a list of all kinds of activities — from tours and sightseeing tickets to airport transfers and excursions.

When you click on the attraction, you'll get more details about what's included in the activity.

Click "See options" to choose your activity dates, times, and the number of participants.

Once you select "Choose" you'll have the opportunity to enter your traveler details. Then, you'll be brought to the final booking screen where you can select your payment method.

Before you choose between booking through the Citi Portal or transferring points to a partner for an award flight, be sure to compare the number of points required in each case — and verify that an award flight is actually available before you decide on that route.

If you're looking for an all-purpose travel credit card with strong rewards, many ways to use your points, and an annual fee under $100, the Citi Premier should be on your shortlist. Beyond the welcome bonus offer, the Citi Premier® Card offers great 3x earning categories that just about anyone can take advantage of — and the rewards it earns are incredibly flexible.

Citi offers several different cards that earn Citi ThankYou points:

  • Citi Premier® Card: Earn 60,000 bonus ThankYou® points after you spend $4,000 in purchases within the first three months of account opening
  • Citi Custom Cash℠ Card : Earn $200 cash back, fulfilled as 20,000 ThankYou® Points, after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first six months of account opening
  • Citi® Double Cash Card
  • Citi Rewards+® Card : Earn 20,000 bonus points after spending $1,500 in the first three months of account opening
  • Citi Prestige® Card: No longer available to new applicants

If you have the Citi Premier® Card, there's an additional incentive to book through the Citi ThankYou portal. Once per calendar year, cardholders can get $100 off a hotel stay of $500 or more (before taxes and fees) when they book through the Citi portal — whether the stay is booked with points, charged to the Citi Premier® Card, or a combination of both.

The Citi Travel Portal is a terrific tool if you're looking for a way to redeem points for flights, hotels, car rentals, and attractions without worrying about blackout dates or fussing with loyalty program award charts. You'll even earn frequent flyer miles and elite credits for flight bookings (but you won't earn hotel points or elite nights on hotel stays, because it's a third-party booking).

Anyone with an eligible Citi ThankYou credit card can redeem their points through the portal at a rate of 1 cent each. Or, if you don't have enough points to cover the entire booking, you can pay with your Citi card in combination with rewards to make up the difference.

Even though using the Citi Travel Portal is easy and convenient, it is usually possible to get more value from your Citi ThankYou points by transferring them to Citi's airline and hotel partners. This method requires jumping through more hoops and searching for award availability, so if you'd rather avoid that inconvenience, the Citi Travel Portal is an ideal booking method.

Citi cardholders can access the travel portal by logging into their online account and navigating to the travel section or directly through the Citi Travel website.

Yes, you can use your Citi points to book flights, hotels, car rentals, and more through the portal. Points can cover all or part of the booking cost.

Typically, bookings made through the portal using your Citi card will earn points according to your card's rewards program.

The portal does not usually charge additional booking fees, but it's always best to review the terms and conditions for any specific charges that may apply.

Yes, you can cancel or modify bookings, but the ability to do so without penalty depends on the specific terms of your booking. Always check the cancellation policy at the time of booking.

Citi ThankYou Points sometimes don’t get the same press as Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards, but don’t overlook them.

With a few credit cards to help you earn ThankYou Points and several airline partners that provide some amazing redemption opportunities, these are points everyone should consider!

In this post, we’ll review what transfer opportunities Citi ThankYou Points offer, how to make these transfers, and more. With this info in hand, you’ll be ready to see the world using your ThankYou Points.

Citi offers multiple cards that earn ThankYou Points, and each has category bonuses that allow you to earn points quicker. Make sure you check out the best ways to earn Citi ThankYou Points to get started on the right foot.

The Citi ThankYou Points program has 14 airline transfer partners and 3 hotel transfer partners . Make sure you check the transfer rate since not all transfers are done at a 1:1 ratio.

Keep in mind that these rates are for those who hold either the Citi Premier ® Card or the Citi Prestige ® Card (no longer open to new applicants).

Holders of the Citi Double Cash ® Card , Citi ThankYou ® Preferred Card (no longer open to new applicants), Citi Rewards+ ® Card , and Sears Mastercard ® with ThankYou ® Rewards can transfer ThankYou Points to Choice Privileges at a 1:1.5 ratio and Wyndham Rewards and JetBlue TrueBlue at a 1:0.8 ratio.

Hot Tip: Use our transfer partner tool to see how many points you’ll get when you transfer your Citi ThankYou Points to partner hotels and airlines!

Step 5:  Head over to the appropriate airline site to book your award flight.

Citi will sometimes offer a transfer bonus for a limited period of time. If you have a redemption in mind, this is the ideal time to transfer your points to get the most value.

Booking Travel With the Citi ThankYou Travel Portal

If you’re booking economy flights, the Citi ThankYou travel portal  might be worth your consideration. Booking through Citi is not unlike booking directly with an airline. The difference is that you will see the cost in points (1 cent per point) in addition to the cash price.

When booking through the Citi ThankYou travel portal, you will earn airline miles on your flights . This serves as a kind of small rebate. However, award redemptions may cost more points in the Citi ThankYou travel portal than booking an award flight with the airline, so it’s important to compare when booking economy tickets .

While you can’t transfer ThankYou Points directly to American Airlines or United Airlines to book award tickets (for example), you can transfer to one of their respective Oneworld or Star Alliance partners and accomplish the same thing.

If SAAver level award space is available on American Airlines, you could transfer points to Cathay Pacific’s Asia Miles program to book the flight . If Saver Award space is available on United Airlines, you could transfer points to Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer program to book the United flight.

In both cases, the valuation of 1 cent per point when used in the Citi ThankYou travel portal makes transferring a better option even for these short economy flights. The United booking is closer, and booking with the Citi ThankYou travel portal still might be a good move.

The best choice depends on which airline you would credit points to for the flights and any status with the airline. Make sure you compare your award booking options with the Citi ThankYou travel portal prices to ensure you are getting the most value out of your points. There’s no need to throw away extra ThankYou Points!

Bottom Line:  Most of the time, transferring ThankYou Points to an airline partner is the best way to go. Just make sure it’s a 1:1 transfer ratio.

Citi ThankYou Points can be redeemed for gift cards to merchants including Starbucks, Home Depot , and Macy’s , or for items such as luggage and cameras .

While there are plenty of these options to use your points, none of them provide a good value. Stick with flight redemptions if you really want to get the most value from your points.

If you have both the Citi Prestige card and the Citi Premier card, you can link the accounts so you have access to all of your ThankYou Points in one place. This can make earning the points for your next award flight much easier.

The downside is that once linked, canceling one of the cards will cause the points earned on that card to have an expiration date. Additionally, once linked, your accounts cannot be unlinked.

There is an option to combine accounts online, but you may find the site has trouble processing the request. The easiest way to combine accounts is to call 800-THANK-YOU (800-842-6596).

You can also transfer points to other ThankYou Points accounts. Unlike American Express Membership Rewards, which can be transferred to your authorized user’s frequent flyer accounts, Citi allows you to transfer directly to ThankYou Points accounts.

These shared points expire within 90 days, so they need to be transferred to an airline partner or used in the Citi ThankYou travel portal within that timeframe. Even with the time limit, this is a great way to help friends and family complete a booking.

Using your ThankYou Points for travel is clearly the best way to extract value from your points. With 14 airline transfer partners, you have plenty of choices when it comes time to redeem points for an amazing flight. To make the process a bit easier, we’ve compiled a list of the best ways to redeem your ThankYou Points .

Occasionally, Citi will run promotions that provide transfer bonuses between 10% and 30%. These are great opportunities to save some points when transferring points to complete an award booking.

Citi transfer bonus to Flying Blue

Citi ThankYou Rewards might not be the most talked about transferable points program, but these points can help you book some fantastic travel experiences. Once you know a few ways to earn and redeem your points, you’ll be ready to fly across the world.

Always a fan of flying, it was only natural that Spencer was drawn to finding a way to improve the travel experience.

Like many, he started this journey searching for cheap flights to take him around the world. This was fun for a while, but Spencer was intrigued by the idea of flying in business and first class!

Throwing himself into what became an extensive research project, Spencer spent 3-4 hours per night learning everything he could about frequent flyer miles over the course of several months (he thinks this is normal). He runs Straight to the Points, an award-seat alert platform.

Citi is a Blueprint partner.

Citi ThankYou® points are a rewards currency typically earned by making purchases with a variety of Citi credit cards. The easiest way to use Citi points is to redeem them for a credit against your card’s statement, which will give you a value of half a cent to 1 cent per point, depending on which Citi card you have. But you can get outsized value for your points by transferring them to select partner loyalty programs or saving them up for periodic Citi promotions.

With a little patience, planning and math, you can redeem Citi ThankYou points for more than triple their standard value. Here’s how.

Transfer to Choice Points for affordable European hotels

Choice Hotels’ global network of more than 7,000 properties includes some fairly well-known brands, like Radisson, Econo Lodge and Sleep Inn. But within the points and miles community, Choice has developed a deserved reputation for offering competitive lodging bargains within Europe. Converting Citi points into Choice Privileges points is one of the smartest strategies for cutting costs in expensive countries like Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

For example, you can enjoy one of Europe’s most majestic cities in Sweden by booking a one-night stay at the Clarion Hotel Stockholm in May 2024 for 16,000 Choice points. Cash rates can run as much as $274, which works out to a value of more than 1.7 cents per point when redeeming your rewards.

thankyou points for travel

But Citi sweetens the pot by offering improved rates for Choice transfers. Citi Premier® Card * The information for the Citi Premier® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. cardholders have the most to gain from this, as their points convert into Choice at a 1:2 rate. That means you would need a mere 8,000 Citi points for your night in Stockholm, ultimately giving you a value of 3.4 cents per point.

If you have a no-annual-fee card that earns Citi points, like the Citi Double Cash® Card or Citi Rewards+® Card * The information for the Citi Rewards+® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. , you’ll get a 1:1.5 Choice conversion rate instead, which in this scenario still gives a lucrative value of about 2.6 cents per point.

Book a vacation via the Wyndham-Vacasa partnership

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has a portfolio of 24 different brands ranging from budget options, like Howard Johnson, to luxury getaways within the Registry Collection. You can book award nights at these hotels by converting Citi points to Wyndham Rewards at a 1:1 or 1:0.8 ratio, depending on which Citi card you use.

Wyndham partners with Vacasa, which, like Airbnb, allows you to rent out entire vacation homes. Wyndham will charge you either 15,000 or 30,000 points per bedroom, per night, for your Vacasa vacation rental booking.

  • If the average nightly rate of the property is $250 or less, the cost is 15,000 points per bedroom, per night.
  • If the average nightly rate of the property is between $250 and $500, the cost is 30,000 points per bedroom, per night.

Properties that cost $500.01 and more per night can’t be redeemed with Wyndham points.

This means that at best you’ll be able to get 1.66 cents in value from your points. This is decent, but be aware that the value will go down if you’re renting a place that doesn’t hit that $250 or $500 threshold.

Probably the most exciting way to redeem your Citi points for Vacasa rentals are for large, one-bedroom properties. Done right, you can enjoy space for multiple folks, like in this example from Gualala, California.

thankyou points for travel

Although it has just one bedroom, it also features a loft with a second queen bed, which means up to four people can sleep here comfortably. At $474.90 for a two-night stay, you’re getting 1.58 cents in value from the 30,000 Citi points this will cost.

Dreamy Mexican retreats aside, Vacasa rentals are also available in 35 U.S. states, as well as Canada, Belize and Costa Rica.

It’s also important to remember that in order to book a Vacasa property using Wyndham points, you have to call Wyndham Rewards, confirm that the property is available for the dates you’re interested in and check to see if it accepts points. Unfortunately, those details aren’t available online. But Wyndham Rewards’ service representatives are friendly, wait times are relatively short and a great bargain is worth a few minutes of hold music.

Enjoy Turkish hospitality

Citi is one of the programs (along with Capital One miles and Bilt Rewards ) that supports transfers to Turkish Airlines at a 1:1 ratio, provided you have a Citi Premier card. This transferability can come in handy given Turkish Airlines’ international footprint — it flies to more than 300 destinations globally. And its membership in Star Alliance, a network of over 20 airlines, opens up an even wider range of flight redemption possibilities.

A favorite redemption path among Citi cardholders is transferring Citi points to Turkish miles and then using the converted miles for an award flight with United Airlines. These round-trip flights require 20,000 miles and some cash for taxes, so they offer decent redemption value.

thankyou points for travel

The above United economy flight from San Francisco (SFO) to Honolulu (HNL) costs as much as $376 in cash, so the award redemption works out to a value of about 1.8 cents per mile.

thankyou points for travel

Redeeming miles for an award flight with Turkish Airlines itself can yield an even higher value per point than you’ll get for a Star Alliance award flight.

For instance, a one-way business-class Turkish Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Istanbul is typically very expensive.

thankyou points for travel

But it’s far more affordable when booked with miles. The below arrangement works out to an impressive value of about 4.4 cents per mile. And with business class, you’ll enjoy lie-flat seats, delectable Mediterranean cuisine and some of the most courteous flight attendants to ever take to the skies.

Take advantage of transfer promotions

Citi periodically offers limited-time transfer deals that will grant you more points when you make a transfer.

For instance, a round trip economy flight from Seattle to London with Virgin Atlantic in November 2024 can set you back either $887 in cash or 30,000 Virgin Points and $492.50. That’s a so-so value of 1.3 cents per point.

thankyou points for travel

Citi points typically transfer to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club at a 1:1 ratio. But a recent promotion gave Virgin transfers an extra 30% in bonus points.

thankyou points for travel

This promotion allows you to convert just 23,077 Citi points into 30,000 Virgin Points, giving you enough for your award flight and bumping up the value you get to a more respectable 1.7 cents per point.

Save on short-haul flights

Citi cardholders who primarily fly stateside rather than overseas can still get value for their points by transferring them to TrueBlue, the loyalty program of the low-cost airline JetBlue.

TrueBlue uses an alternative redemption structure known as “dynamic pricing,” in which the number of points required for an award flight scales with that flight’s cash price. For instance, this flight from Boston (BOS) to Washington, D.C. (DCA) costs $194 to fly with a carry-on bag.

thankyou points for travel

Booking it as an award flight requires 13,500 points, which works out to a value of 1.1 to 1.4 cents per point, depending on which Citi card was used.

Unlike many competing loyalty programs that limit the availability of award flights during peak travel periods, TrueBlue award flights are consistently available, regardless of when you’d like to book.

Other ways to use Citi ThankYou Points

Aside from transfers to travel loyalty programs and gift card redemptions, Citi ThankYou points can be used in a variety of other ways, including:

  • Direct purchases with popular online and brick-and-mortar retailers, like Amazon, CVS and Walmart.
  • Redemptions for flights, hotel nights, rental cars and other attractions via Citi’s travel portal .
  • Cash-back redemptions via statement credits, direct deposits or checks.
  • Sharing points with other ThankYou Members or donating points to charitable organizations, like the American Red Cross.
  • Redeeming for gift cards from popular retailers such as Apple, Instacart and Hulu.

Note that the per-point value you get for these redemptions can vary significantly and will typically be lower than the more advantageous redemption paths we highlighted above.

Tips for maximizing your Citi ThankYou Points

Take the following steps to ensure you’re getting the most out of the Citi points you’ve earned.

  • Do a little math. Divide the cash price of the item you’re redeeming your points for by the number of points the redemption requires. If that value is less than 1 cent per point ($0.01), you’re getting below-average value for your points.
  • Exercise patience. If the math indicates that you’re spending too many points compared to the price of what you’re interested in, it’s best to just pay cash for that item and hold on to your points for later. You can usually save your points without fear that they’ll expire.
  • Consider an upgrade. The Citi Rewards+ and Citi Double Cash cards have handy features and using them regularly can help you put together a tidy pile of ThankYou points. However, the points they earn only transfer to three of the 19 loyalty programs partnered with ThankYou Rewards, and they don’t transfer to those programs at optimal rates. If you take at least one international flight a year, it might be worth it to pay the $95 annual fee for the Citi Premier, which earns points that transfer to all ThankYou partner programs.

How to earn Citi ThankYou Points

ThankYou Points can be earned by making purchases with eligible Citi credit cards, though some older Citi checking accounts may also have this ability.

Credit cards that earn Citi ThankYou Points

Citi is currently accepting applications for the following credit cards that earn ThankYou points:

  • Citi Rewards+® Card * The information for the Citi Rewards+® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
  • Citi Custom Cash® Card
  • Citi Premier® Card * The information for the Citi Premier® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
  • AT&T Points Plus® Card from Citi

Some older Citi cards also earn ThankYou points, but they’re no longer open to new applicants.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Citi ThankYou points earned from standard purchases typically post to your account within a few days following your billing cycle’s close date. Points earned from a welcome bonus or other promotion may take one or two additional billing cycles to post to your account.

Points transferred to a partner loyalty program can take up to 14 days to post to the receiving account.

Citi ThankYou points are worth varying amounts depending on how they’re redeemed and which credit card you use to earn them. For instance, points earned with the Citi Rewards+ Card and redeemed for a statement credit have a value of half a cent each. But points earned with the Citi Premier card and transferred to partner loyalty programs can be worth more than 3 cents each.

The best way to use Citi ThankYou points is to transfer your points to one of Citi’s partner airline or hotel loyalty programs. These transfers can give you far greater value per point than you’ll typically get if you redeem your points for a statement credit or book travel via Citi’s travel portal.

Citi formerly offered a promotion that allowed Citi points to be converted directly into American Airlines AAdvantage ® miles , though this transfer option is no longer available.

Citi points can currently be transferred to the following loyalty programs:

  • Aeromexico Rewards Points
  • Accor Live Limitless (ALL) Reward points
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Choice Privileges points
  • Emirates Skywards Miles
  • Etihad Guest Miles
  • EVA Air Infinity MileageLands Miles
  • Flying Blue Miles
  • JetBlue TrueBlue points
  • Leaders Club points
  • Qantas Points
  • Qatar Privilege Club Avios
  • Shop Your Way Points
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Miles
  • Thai Royal Orchid Plus Miles
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles Miles
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Points
  • Wyndham Rewards points

Keep in mind that while all of these transfers are accessible to Citi Premier card holders, ThankYou points earned by other Citi cards are limited in their transferability.

Citi ThankYou points typically don’t expire, provided you keep your account open and in good standing.

The value when booking through the Citi ThankYou travel portal

The value when transferring to partners, the citi thankyou points value on amazon, citi thankyou points calculator, cards that earn citi thankyou points, how did we determine the value of citi thankyou points.

The value of Citi ThankYou points is 1 cent when booking travel directly.

The value of Citi ThankYou points is 1.3 cents when transferred to partners.

You can use your Citi points instead of cash to make purchases on Amazon, but it's not a great redemption.

Deciding to spend or earn Citi ThankYou points often hinges on one question: How much are they worth? You don't want to spend them for less than they're worth or try to earn more if they aren't worth enough.

According to our data-driven analysis , the value of Citi ThankYou points is between 1 cent (when booking travel directly) and 1.3 cents (when transferred to partners). Keep in mind that the transfer ratios vary by partner and card.

Why the spread? The lower value reflects a “baseline” figure you can expect when using ThankYou points in a manner with the least amount of hassle involved. The higher value of 1.3 cents per point reflects how much value you could squeeze from them with a little more know-how and effort.

Essentially, there are two separate ways to use Citi points, and they each carry their value (and tradeoffs).

» Learn more: How to earn and use Citi ThankYou Points

There's nothing to analyze here: When booking through the issuer's travel portal, called the Citi ThankYou Rewards Travel Center , ThankYou points are worth exactly 1 cent apiece. So if you book a $500 flight and "pay" with your points, it will cost 50,000 ThankYou points.

This value doesn't have any wiggle room. You can't squeeze more value from your points by searching more or booking with particular airlines. A point is just worth a cent through the portal, no matter how you redeem it.

The tradeoff here is convenience. Of course, one cent isn't the best value you can get from ThankYou points (see below), but booking through the portal is far easier than transferring points to partners and booking award travel.

In fact, if reading the previous sentence felt like you were reading a foreign language, remember, you can always keep things simple and book directly with the airline.

» Learn more: The best airline credit cards right now

Now we're getting into the real nerdery. To get higher value from your Citi ThankYou points, you can transfer them to one of many hotel and airline partners, then book travel through them.

Aeromexico (1:1 ratio).

Air France/KLM (1:1 ratio).

Asia Miles (1:1 ratio).

Avianca (1:1 ratio).

Emirates (1:1 ratio).

Etihad (1:1 ratio).

Eva Air (1:1 ratio).

JetBlue (1:1 or 1:0.8 ratio, depending on which card you have).

Qantas (1:1 ratio).

Qatar Airways (1:1 ratio).

Singapore Airlines (1:1 ratio).

Thai Airways (1:1 ratio).

Turkish Airlines (1:1 ratio).

Virgin Atlantic (1:1 ratio).

Accor Live Limitless (2:1 ratio).

Choice Hotels (1:2 or 1:1.5 ratio, depending on which card you have).

The Leading Hotels of the World (5:1 ratio).

Wyndham (1:1 ratio or 1:0.8 ratio, depending on which card you have).

Shop Your Way (1:10 ratio).

Again, the tradeoff is convenience — this time in the other direction. Transferring and booking with partners is a multiple-step process that requires patience and understanding.

According to our analysis, here are some of the best transfer partners, along with their value.

Keep in mind that unlike the baseline value for using ThankYou points directly, these transfer partner values are estimates based on data from hundreds of flights. So any given redemption could offer more or less worth than our valuation.

What does this mean for transferring ThankYou points? First, before transferring your points, you should carefully research and compare which flights you plan to take and which transfer partner supports them. Next, compare the cash price to the cost using points or miles to ensure it's a good redemption. Then check whether award fares are available and, finally, transfer points.

You can use your Citi points instead of cash to make purchases on Amazon. Although the value per point is not listed on the Citi or Amazon sites (and can therefore change at any time), the current redemption value is 0.8 cents per point.

This is a lousy redemption for two reasons:

The value per point is far less than even the lower end of using points to book travel.

You won't earn points on the purchase. That is, if you paid with another card rather than points, you would actually earn more points.

All in all, we discourage using Amazon to redeem Citi ThankYou points unless you're trying to clear out a few remaining points from your balance.

Use our Citi ThankYou points calculator below to determine the value of your stash of points, based on both the baseline and NerdWallet estimated values.

How much are your Citi ThankYou points worth? This calculator can convert any number of points into an equivalent cash value, allowing you to figure out what they're really worth.

You can use it to determine whether a particular redemption is a good one or whether a promotion or sign-up offer is worth it. Another resource to help you get the best value for Citi ThankYou points is our Airline Point Transfers and Partner Award Bookings tool .

For our NerdWallet estimate of 1.5 cents per ThankYou point, we factored in several variables:

The value of these points when used to book travel directly with the credit card's travel portal.

The value of the airline and hotel points to which these points can be transferred, when applicable (based on the separate analyses above).

The number of top-tier travel transfer partners, as determined by our expert panel.

The overall value is determined as a weighted average between (1) and (2), with the weight determined by (3). The program with the largest number of high-value partners receives a 100% weight on (2), and a program with zero high-value partners receives a 50% weight on (2).

How to book a cruise using points and miles

If you're eager to embark on a cruise and have accumulated points, you might not have to pay for your next trip.

In this guide, we will explore strategies to help you optimize your points and miles to reduce the cost of your cruise vacation. We'll discuss leveraging your existing loyalty programs and the best ways to unlock savings on your cruise fare.

Here are the top ways to use your points and miles for a cruise.

Should you book a cruise with points and miles?

While various options are available for redeeming your points and miles toward a cruise, it is important to note that the value you receive may not always be optimal (i.e., less than TPG's valuations ). In the realm of travel rewards, there are often more lucrative opportunities to leverage your points and miles for flights or hotel stays, where the value and flexibility tend to be higher.

If you have American Express, Capital One, Chase or Citi points, you might be able to get a redemption value of 1 to 1.5 cents per point for cruises. In this case, you'd get $100 or $150 off your cruise fare by redeeming 10,000 points. While this may seem high, it falls short compared to the value some travelers get when redeeming points for luxury hotels or first-class flights.

Some cruise lines have their own credit cards, but a few have formed partnerships with other brands. For example, Marriott Bonvoy members can earn and redeem points on Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection cruises . These partner options are often limited, though, and may require loyalty to a specific travel brand.

You can always use points to reduce travel expenses for any cruise vacation. For example, you can use American Express Membership Rewards points , Bilt Rewards points , Capital One miles , Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Citi ThankYou points to cover costs associated with airfare, hotels or rental cars for your cruise. This often proves to be a better use of your rewards.

However, if you really want to use your accumulated points to reduce your cruise costs, here are various options for booking a cruise with points and miles.

Book a cruise with credit card points

You can use certain credit card points to book a cruise. Typically, you will be required to make the reservation through the portal provided by your credit card issuer, but some require calling a booking center. You may also be able to charge the cruise to your card and then redeem your rewards for a statement credit against some (or all) of that purchase.

Here's how you can book a cruise on points with several major credit card companies.

Amex Travel Pay with Points

If you have an eligible American Express card that earns Membership Rewards points , you can use those points to cover the cost of your cruise through the Pay with Points program . With this program, you can redeem Membership Rewards points at a value of 0.5 to 0.7 cents per point for most travel purchases. However, we value each Membership Rewards point at 2 cents when you maximize the program's transfer partners, so you would be using them at a lower value.

The Amex Travel portal has a user-friendly search feature that allows you to explore different cruises based on specific filters such as date, destination, cruise line and trip duration even before you log in.

To book a cruise using Pay with Points, log in to the travel portal and do the following:

  • Select your preferred cruise itinerary and cabin.
  • Enter your passenger information.
  • When it's time to check out, enter your Membership Rewards-enrolled American Express card information and select "Yes" to determine how many Membership Rewards points your account has.
  • You can pay for the entire cruise using Pay with Points or erase a portion of the cost and pay the rest with cash.

Alternatively, you can look up the cruise you want and call 800-297-5627 to book directly with the Amex Travel team over the phone.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

The Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal is similar to Amex Travel, but the redemption value is higher.

Points from the $95 per year Chase Sapphire Preferred Card are worth 1.25 cents each toward travel booked through Chase, while points from the $550 per year Chase Sapphire Reserve are worth 1.5 cents.

Unfortunately, Chase's booking system doesn't let you book cruises directly through Chase's online Ultimate Rewards portal. You'll have to call the Ultimate Rewards booking hotline and talk to someone in the cruise reservations department instead.

To book a cruise and pay with Chase Ultimate Rewards points:

  • Find the cruise itinerary and availability you want directly through the cruise line's website . If you have a specific cabin in mind, have that information handy. Unfortunately, reports indicate that you cannot book Disney Cruise Line sailings with Chase Ultimate Rewards.
  • Call a Chase travel specialist directly at 855-234-2542, and be prepared to walk the adviser through the cruise line booking page on their end so they can find and book the cabin and options you want. Cruise advisers are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.
  • Your cruise adviser will set up the itinerary for you and, upon checkout, will ask you how many points you want to apply against your final balance.

Citi ThankYou Rewards

The Citi ThankYou portal allows cardholders to use their ThankYou points as credit toward a cruise. Some cardholders can redeem points at a value of 1 cent apiece.

Finding your cruise within the Citi ThankYou portal can be frustrating because the search functionality isn't very robust. Travelers can only search for cruises by destination or cruise line, not by available dates.

To book a cruise using Citi ThankYou points:

  • Log in to the travel portal by navigating through your Citi account (or directly at thankyou.com) and clicking on "Cruises" on the travel booking page.
  • Then, filter by cruise line or destination. (Note that you can't search for cruises by a specific date.)
  • Once you've identified the cruise you wish to book, call 800-842-6596 to speak directly with a Citi ThankYou travel specialist, who will allow you to apply Citi ThankYou points toward the final cost at checkout.

You can also use Citi ThankYou points to book a Disney cruise if you desire.

Capital One miles

Capital One offers more flexibility and a more straightforward redemption process than Amex, Chase and Citi. Unless you transfer your miles to an airline or hotel partner , each mile is worth a flat 1 cent toward travel.

Redeeming points doesn't require booking through a portal , thus freeing you up to book your cruise directly with the company or via a travel agent to get extra perks. This option also lets you pursue promotional package rates or discounts that might not be available through the Amex, Chase or Citi portals.

The award redemption process is straightforward: Use the card when paying for your cruise package, then log in to your account and use the "cover your travel purchases" option to apply your mileage balance as a credit toward the total amount you owe on your credit card statement.

You can earn Capital One miles with cards like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . Each has varying features, so do some research to decide which card is best for you.

Book a cruise with airline miles

You can also book cruises using airline miles. However, like other options, the value of your travel rewards is often underwhelming. The following travel providers offer cruise portals that allow you to redeem rewards:

  • American Airlines Cruises
  • Delta Cruises
  • United Cruises

For example, in the United Cruises portal, this seven-night Disney cruise out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, costs 151,571 United MileagePlus miles per person for an interior cabin — worth $2,198 by TPG's current valuation for United miles.

In contrast, the same room and sailing dates cost just $1,061 per person when paid for with cash — clearly a better value than paying with United miles.

Use cruise cobranded credit card points to book

With cruise line cobranded credit cards , you can earn points for purchases that you can then use to offset the cost of your cruise booking. However, this might not be your best option for earning and redeeming points.

Here, you'll want to be sure you can use your points toward the cruise fare instead of only onboard purchases. For example, the Royal Caribbean Visa Signature® Card offers a welcome bonus of 25,000 MyCruise Rewards points after spending $1,000 or more on purchases within the first 90 days of card membership to use on your next cruise. Your redemption choices vary.

For instance, you can redeem 25,000 points toward your companion's cruise fare on a three- or four-night Royal Caribbean cruise (certain conditions apply, i.e., minimum available ocean-view cabin and may not exceed $500 in value). Or, you can redeem 30,000 points for a $300 discount on a Celebrity Cruises voyage. To learn more about how to redeem MyCruise Rewards points, check out this PDF .

The information for the Royal Caribbean Visa Signature has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Redeem Marriott Bonvoy points

In 2021, Marriott announced that The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection would participate in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. Members can redeem points on Ritz-Carlton cruises and enjoy elite status perks on voyages. However, the redemption rates aren't great.

You can redeem a minimum of 180,000 points toward a flat $1,000 savings on the cruise fare. After that, you can redeem increments of 90,000 points toward $500 in savings, up to the entire cruise fare. This redemption rate equates to about 0.56 cents per Marriott point, well below TPG's valuation of 0.84 cents per point.

Related: 17 ways to earn lots of Marriott Bonvoy points

Additionally, Marriott Bonvoy's Cruise with Points program allows you to cash in Marriott points for credit toward any cruise that's bookable on the Cruise with Points website.

You can redeem points in the following denominations, all valued at 0.4 cents per point:

  • 63,000 points for $250 off your cruise fare
  • 125,000 points for $500 off
  • 250,000 points for $1,000 off
  • 625,000 points for $2,500 off
  • 1,250,000 points for $5,000 off

To redeem Marriott points for a cruise, call 1 800-596-0452.

Use points and miles for pre-cruise hotels and flights

You might make better use of your points and miles by redeeming them for flights to your departure port and for pre- and post-cruise hotel stays instead of for the cruise fare itself. With flights and hotels, you can often get more than 1 or 1.5 cents per point, unlike cruises, which generally provide lackluster redemption rates.

For example, you could transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United MileagePlus and get 3 cents per mile by booking a flight from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Miami International Airport (MIA). If you're an elite member or have a United credit card , you might even have access to special member award pricing .

Or, you could use 12,000 to 18,000 World of Hyatt points or an annual Category 1-4 award from the World of Hyatt Credit Card to pay for a room at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport in Florida before heading to Port Canaveral the next day.

By using points on this given one-night stay, you're getting 2.5 cents per point.

Bottom line

It isn't always easy to get great value for your points and miles when you use them toward cruise redemptions — at least, not the way you can for first-class flights. However, redeeming your points for free or discounted cruise travel is possible.

That said, you should steer clear of using airline miles or hotel points for cruises if you want to redeem your rewards for maximum value. Those are better used on flights and overnight stays.

It's a similar story for credit card currencies. Capital One offers the most flexibility of all the major issuers because you can book your cruise directly or through a travel agent . With multiple booking options, you can take advantage of additional perks and access promotional rates from travel agents and online retailers that aren't available through credit card portals. You could even stack those deals for additional savings by booking via an airline portal to earn miles.

Once booked, the Capital One award redemption process is straightforward; simply apply your mileage balance as a credit toward your total credit card statement. Each mile is worth a flat 1 cent toward travel, so you always know the value for comparison purposes.

If you ask me, that's how I'd book a cruise with points and miles to get the best value.

How to Enroll US Bank Altitude Reserve & Business Altitude Connect Credit Cards in Free Priority Pass Membership

Good afternoon everyone, I hope your week is going well.  Last week, we learned that the Chase Sapphire Reserve & JPMorgan Ritz Carlton Priority Pass memberships will lose restaurant access on July 1, 2024 .  Luckily, Frequent Miler’s recent podcast episode listed a few credit cards that will still offer Priority Pass restaurant access after July 1.  Also luckily, I already have 2 of those credit cards: US Bank Altitude Reserve (8 visits) and the US Bank Business Altitude Connect (4 visits).  In this post, I will show you how to enroll in Priority Pass for these 2 credit cards.

For the US Bank Altitude Reserve, you need to go to this specific enrollment link: www.prioritypass.com/usbankaltitudereserve .  The terms say:

Congratulations! As a valued U.S. Bank Altitude® Reserve Visa Infinite® cardholder, you are eligible for a complimentary membership of Priority Pass, with eight free visits a year . Once you enroll you will have access to more than 1,500+ participating airport lounges and experiences worldwide. Get started today by entering your 16-digit U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card number. If you have already enrolled, please login to access the member website.

Enter your 16 digit credit card number, enter the captcha code, and click the Submit button.

What is the guest policy? For example if I go with a guest, does that count as 2 of the 8 total visits?

' src=

Yes, that is my understanding. If you go by yourself, that counts as 1 visit. If you go with another person, that counts as 2 visits.
