Strive to Thrive 2023
The Kaiser Permanente Strive to Thrive Healthcare Career Fair was recently hosted and organized by South Bay Kaiser Permanente in partnership with San Jose State University, local nonprofits and community leaders.
At Kaiser Permanente, we believe in lifting up, giving back and working together with our local community. We chose to develop Strive to Thrive with a focus on youth ages 12 to 18 because it is imperative to the future of healthcare that people of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds are participating in some way. Our community is vibrant and beautifully different, and it is important to deliver healthcare that is inclusive, equitable, culturally and linguistically appropriate.
We learned that our community, youth, and their parents are eager to learn about different career paths and recognize the importance of being exposed to new opportunities. Most of the 2023 Strive to Thrive attendees were BIPOC youth (92%) and about 70% were youth who attended without their parents. More than 270 people participated in the Strive to Thrive Healthcare Career Fair, including many KP physicians and employees, who donated their time to help inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.
We are so grateful to our educational partners who recognized the importance of providing this opportunity to our local youth to learn more about healthcare as a career option. These partners include: San Jose State University, Child Advocates of Silicon Valley, Latino Education Advancement Foundation, Girl Scouts, Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, PARTI Program, and the Silicon Valley Education Foundation.

Canadian punk band Metz celebrates new Sub Pop album with Bay Area shows
By Dave Pehling
Updated on: April 29, 2024 / 8:13 AM PDT / CBS San Francisco
One of Canada's most celebrated modern-rock bands visits the Bay Area this weekend when Metz brings its current tour to promote their new album Up On Gravity Hill to San Jose and San Francisco .
One of the leading lights of punk in North America in the past 16 years, Canadian trio Metz was formed in Ottowa in 2008 by guitarist/singer Alex Edkins, bassist Chris Slorach and drummer Hayden Menzies. The band quickly developed its tuneful take on noise-rock indebted to the sounds of the Jesus Lizard, Drive Like Jehu and early Nirvana through its early live performances and a string of singles recorded for Toronto-based imprint We Are Busy Bodies Records.
Those kinetic, pile-driving tunes and the band's reputation for ferocious onstage delivery would earn the group a deal with Sub Pop Records, which released Metz's eponymous debut album. Clocking in at just under a half an hour, the explosive effort earned the band wide praise and was nominated for Canada's Polaris Music Prize in 2013.
Over the course of the trio's subsequent three albums for the label, Metz has largely stuck to its original template of mixing corrosive, desperate riffs with flashes of surprisingly catchy melodies while working with a couple of noise-rock icons along the way. They collaborated with Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes/Rocket From the Crypt guitarist John Reis on a two-song single in 2016 and had legendary engineer Steve Albini record their third album Strange Peace that came out the following year.
Sub Pop issued the compilation Automat that collected some of the threesome's hard-to-find singles and unreleased early material in 2019 to appease fans while Metz worked on their fourth album. Atlas Vending was released in 2020 and pushed the band's into more experimental territory -- sometimes recalling Sonic Youth -- while retaining its signature locomotive energy. Amid the pandemic shutdown that kept the band home when they would have been touring, Sub Pop this past summer released Live at the Opera House , an audio and video document that ably captures the relentless intensity of a Metz performance.
Another diversion during the COVID-forced downtime would be Weird Nightmare, Edkins's solo project that takes a more pop-minded approach to indie rock on its debut album that was issued by Sub Pop in 2022. That melodic sense colors the trio's latest collection of new songs recently released by the imprint, Up On Gravity Hill . Tempering the corrosive aggression of Metz's earlier recordings with a soaring, shoegaze-influenced sound, the new effort features a broader musical palette thanks to contributions from guests Owen Pallett on violin and backing vocals from Amber Webber (Black Mountain, Lightning Dust) to go with a lyrical focus on coping with grief and loss.
Metz finally returns to the Bay Area this week for the first time since playing the New Parish in Oakland as part of a 2022 tour marking the tenth anniversary of their eponymous debut album. Joining the band for a run of West Coast dates is Gouge Away, a like-minded noisy post-punk quintet founded Florida that is similarly mixing more sedate shoegaze sounds with urgent hardcore anthems on their acclaimed new album Deep Sage. The bands play the Ritz in San Jose Friday before coming to the Chapel in San Francisco's Mission District Saturday night .
Metz and Gouge Away Friday, May 3, 8 p.m. $22-$25 The Ritz
Saturday, May 4, 8 p.m. $25-$28 The Chapel

2024 NFL undrafted free agent tracker: Full team-by-team list of player signings following NFL Draft
The complete list of undrafted free agents signed.
After three days and 257 picks, the 2024 NFL Draft has concluded. Even with the annual selection meeting officially over, plenty of teams will be in bidding wars with undrafted players to get them on their roster. Some players would rather be undrafted in order to get more guaranteed money or work out contracts on their terms.
The majority of undrafted free agents are just training camp bodies or roster fillers, but there are always a few on teams that end up making rosters and contributing for years to some. Some even end up as Pro Bowlers or make the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
These undrafted players are worth paying attention to this time of year, especially with rookie minicamps coming up over the next few weeks. Here are all the undrafted free agents signed by NFL teams, which will be updated as teams announce player signings.

Local News | Cirque du Soleil makes high-flying return to San Jose
"kooza" delighting audiences at the santa clara county fairgrounds through may.
If you’ve driven near the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds recently, you surely noticed Cirque du Soleil’s majestic big top — known as the Grand Chapiteau to fans — has risen in the fairgrounds parking lot.
With the delightful “Kooza,” Cirque is back in town with all its tents for the first time since 2019, not counting an arena show last year at SAP Center. The show itself is loaded with all the crowd-pleasing antics and mind-blowing acrobatics that you’d expect from the touring French-Canadian troupe. If you don’t leave the show feeling elated and a little awestruck, that may be on you.
And fair warning to anyone in an aisle seat close to the stage: You might just get brought onstage for a fun bit as one unsuspecting audience member did Thursday night.
But after seeing the show Thursday night, I was most surprised by how much better the Fairgrounds location turns out to be, especially compared to a previous site that jammed everything into a parking lot near the San Jose Police Department. This spot is much easier to get into and out of — and on-site parking is plentiful.
By the way, Psycho Donuts has done their bit and provided a new limited edition donut, “The Trickster,” named after one of the show’s characters and available inside the big top. It’s covered with colorful sprinkles and filled with familiar circus flavors including caramel popcorn and pretzels.
”Kooza” runs in San Jose through May 26, and you can get all the details you need at cirquedusoleil.com/kooza .
BOOSTING ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH: Michaela “Mikey” Hoag’s quest to bring about a world without Alzheimer’s disease is still going strong. On April 19, the Part the Cloud Gala — which she started back in 2012 — raised $17 million to support Alzheimer’s research.
Chaired by Sue Foley and Lauren Koenig, the classy affair at a private home in Woodside was emceed by “Suits” star Sarah Rafferty and was highlighted by a performance from Grammy-winning songwriter and musician Jon Batiste. The crowd of more than 300 guests included quite a few luminaries from the worlds of sports, tech and entertainment including Joe Montana; Ronnie Lott; Reed Hastings and Patty Quillin; Brandi Chastain; Ted Sarandos and Nicole Avant; Phil Schiller; and, of course, Mikey and Jay Hoag.
Dr. Maria Carrillo, the Alzheimer’s Association chief science officer and medical affairs lead, said at the event that three new clinical trials for therapies for Alzheimer’s and other dementias were being propelled by grant funding from Part the Cloud, which has invested $82 million in 68 clinical trials.
HOME SWEET HOMES: It looks like mortgage rates aren’t going to be heading down anytime soon, but I’m going to say that just makes it more attractive to look at other people’s gorgeous homes without having to fork over a down payment. You can certainly do that next weekend at the 40th annual Willow Glen Home Tour or — if you’re like me — you’ll come away with a bunch of redecorating ideas for your current home. (Who knew I would fall in love with push-button light switches?)
The self-guided tour showcases five homes in one of San Jose’s most sought-after neighborhoods on May 4 and May 5, including one designated “garden home,” where you can relax with a beverage or enjoy a complimentary wine tasting. Tickets for the tour are $50 — the price goes up on the days of the tour — but it’s also for a great cause: San Jose Day Nursery, which has been providing childcare and education for the downtown area since 1916.
Everything you need to know — except the addresses, which won’t be divulged until you get your ticket — is available at willowglenhometour.com .
SAVE THE DATE : Civil rights icon Ruby Bridges will be the keynote speaker at the YWCA Golden Gate Silicon Valley’s Inspire Luncheon on Oct. 8 in Santa Clara.
Bridges was just a little girl when she was the first Black student to attend an all-white elementary school in Louisiana in 1960, and this year marks the 70th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that made that possible. Registration for the fundraising luncheon — which draws more than 1,000 people to the Santa Clara Convention Center — opens Aug. 1.
PARTY PLANNING: Lisa Sobrato Sonsini will be honored with the Community Spirit Award by Child Advocates of Silicon Valley at its inaugural Black White & Pink Ball on June 1 at the Corinthian Event Center in downtown San Jose.
The festive evening, which includes dinner and live music by Radio Gatsby, also will include a keynote by Tracy Warman-Gries, a CASA volunteer whose parents served as foster parents for 21 children — giving her a firsthand look on the impact families can have on foster kids. For tickets or other details on the gala, go to www.childadvocatessv.org .
