It’s not Christmas in London if you don’t see Christmas trees! There are tons of Christmas trees dotted all across London (which you can check out on my Christmas in London map ) but there are 2 main trees that you can’t miss.

The first Christmas tree is in St Pancras International Station at King’s Cross. Every year, they collaborate with a brand to create the most unique Christmas trees you will ever see. My all-time favourite is the 2023 Christmas tree where they collaborated with Hatchards Bookshop to create a book tree! As a book-loving travel blogger, this made my heart sing!

The second Christmas tree is in Trafalgar Square. It’s in the same area as the Christmas market and has a history behind it! Every year since 1947, London is given a Christmas tree by the city of Oslo in Norway as a token of gratitude for British support to Norway in World War 2. Every Christmas tree gifted is typically a 50 to 60-year-old Norway spruce tree and is amazingly tall, standing over 20 metres!

8. Attend Christmas Carols and Concerts

View this post on Instagram A post shared by St Paul's Cathedral, London (@stpaulscathedrallondon)

One beautiful aspect of Christmas is all the Christmas carolling and concerts! Luckily, London is a big city so there are tons of Christmas carols and concerts to see leading up to Christmas. St Paul’s Cathedral and Royal Albert Hall go all out for the Christmas carols and concerts, but there are other churches and performing arts centres that also do beautiful performances!

9. Festive Dining

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Landmark London (@the_landmark_london)

One of my favourite things about Christmas is definitely the food! From turkey to gingerbread men and mulled wine, best believe I will be full by Christmas afternoon! If you’re spending Christmas in London and you fancy festive dining, you can opt for afternoon tea at The Savoy or The Landmark or check out some festive dining menus at The Ritz or The Ivy Chelsea Garden.

10. Watch Festive Theatre Shows, Films + Pantomimes

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Royal Opera House (@royaloperahouse)

It’s not Christmas without Christmas classics like The Nutcracker, Home Alone and Elf! During Christmas in London, there are Christmas theatre shows, films and pantomimes that you can watch and enjoy from mid/late November up until Christmas! The most popular is the Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House, which you will have to book very early in advance. But there are also Christmas shows, films and pantomimes that you can watch elsewhere in places like the Barbican, the Dominion Theatre and the London Palladium.

How To Spend Christmas in London

View of Christmas Decs at a market, London, England, UK

We have highlighted the best holiday activities and attractions in London during the festive season. However, for visitors planning to celebrate Christmas in London – actually  December 25 – we have a few more holiday tips so that you can best plan your trip.

Christmas Eve London

In London, December 24 is not a Bank Holiday – meaning, most things are open (but may close early)…and it’s actually quite busy. While some Londoners are preparing for the festivities of the following day, many more are out celebrating with family and friends.

Some of the top things to do in London on Christmas Eve are ice skating, attending a show, last-minute Christmas shopping and drinking mulled wine at one of the Christmas markets. Christmas concerts and midnight mass are two other top Christmas Eve events in London.

Christmas Day London

The Best London Christmas Lights, England, UK

Christmas Day in London is the quietest day of the year. Most stores and restaurants are closed – and the busy Transport for London network (Tube, Buses, Trains and Trams) all comes to a halt.

With nearly empty streets, it can be a great opportunity to embark on a Self-Guided Walking Tour of London or to rent a bike to pedal around. Additionally, some tourist services – like Thames River Cruises and Hop On Hop Off London Buses are running.

If the weather is agreeable, parks are some of the best places to go on Christmas Day in London. Swing by The Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park on Christmas morning to watch the annual Serpentine Swimming Club race for the Peter Pan Cup or take a walk through Kensington Gardens. At dusk, wander down some of the classic London lanes lit with Christmas lights.

Attending a Christmas service at one of the city’s finest churches – like Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral or St. Martin-in-the-Fields – is another way to spend Christmas Day in London.

Christmas Dinners London

While most restaurants are closed on Christmas Day in London, there are a few exceptions. Some eateries and pubs are open for either lunch or dinner – and several hotels offer special London Christmas meals. In addition to the set menus for dinner, select hotels and restaurants host holiday brunch and Afternoon Tea on Christmas Day.

Travelers looking for the Best Christmas Dinner in London – or any meal out on December 25 – will need to make reservations far in advance!

For an alternative Christmas meal in London, visitors can go to Chinatown, where many restaurants are open on December 25. Another option is Beigel Bake on Brick Lane, a small deli that cranks out meaty sandwiches and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Hotel bars might be a good last-minute option for a drink or light bite to eat for travelers who aren’t able to get a reservation in advance.

Boxing Day Events London

Battersea PowerStation Shopping Mall, Christmas, London

Boxing Day – the day after Christmas, December 26 – is a national holiday in London, England. However, unlike London Christmas Day, on Boxing Day almost all the stores, restaurants, holiday markets, ice skating rinks, museums, theaters and tourist attractions are open.

Typically, public transit is back up and running, albeit on a reduced schedule (but it’s always good to check before making any plans).

One of the best things to do in London on Boxing Day is to go shopping. Many retailers discount items the day after Christmas, so it a great time to score deals.

Watching football (or rather, soccer) is a Boxing Day tradition – as is cozying up in a British pub. Indulging in a boozy Boxing Day Brunch – where many restaurants offer bottomless drinks – is a fun way to spend the leisurely day, as well.

New Year’s Eve in London

London loves to Celebrate New Year’s Eve – and the biggest event is the London New Year’s Eve Fireworks over the River Thames. Tickets are required for the best spots (we particularly like the view from Westminster Bridge), but NYE Thames River cruises offer a unique vantage point and heaps of onboard fun!

Throughout London, restaurants and clubs host parties – from elegant affairs to all night raves. Another excellent way to spend New Year’s in London is at the theater.

London New Year’s Day

Balloons at the New Years Day Parade, London, England, UK

New Year’s Day in London is a national holiday, and the biggest celebration is the London New Year Day Parade. A tradition that has been going strong since 1987, the January 1 London parade is free to attend, but get there early!

New Year’s Day is also one of the last days to enjoy many of the festive holiday London markets, Christmas time performances and illuminated Christmas trees.

Top Travel Tips for Your Christmas London Trip

Santa waiting to cross the street, London at Christmas

Now that you know what to do in London over Christmas, we have a few final travel tips.

Christmas in London Weather

Winter conditions are typically a concern for holiday travelers – and London at Christmas weather will certainly keep you guessing.

Overall, winters in London tend to be mild. Skies are overcast, days are short and precipitation (typically in the form of rain, but sometimes snow) is often predicted. Bottom line, be prepared!

Christmas Transport London

London Xmas Decs on a motorbike, England, UK

London has a robust public transportation network that makes it easy for travelers to get around. That said, December is often a time for transport strikes, so it’s best to stay up to date with any disruptions during your trip.

As we already mentioned, all London public transport is closed on Christmas Day. Want to ride the London Tube Christmas Day? It’s closed. Buses, Overground Trains and London Trams are also parked for the day.

Travelers who want to do a little sightseeing on December 25 can find some London Tourist Christmas Day Buses running. To get around on Christmas Day, we recommend walking, cycling or booking an Uber or FreeNow Taxi.

Where To Stay in London for Christmas

Animal Light Displays, Riverside Christmas Market, London, England, UK

London is sprawling metropolis with thousands of hotels in a range of prices. Deciding where to stay for your London holiday trip can be a big conundrum – but it will likely come down to budget, desired amenities and preferred location.

A room at London’s poshest hotels that are decadently dressed up for the holidays – like The Ritz and The Connaught – will cost upwards of $1,500 per night. Other luxury hotels with fabulous holiday décor – such as The Ned and The Landmark – fetch more than $500 per night.

Budget-conscious travelers, however, can find more affordable hotels in the $150 per night range.

Our best advice for where to stay in London at Christmas is to first search for a hotel within your budget, then choose a hotel based on its location. The accommodation does not need to be city center (as London Christmas attractions are located from one end to the other), but it is best to be close to a Tube station to make getting around easy.

Additionally, popular places to stay in London at Christmas get booked well in advance, so plan ahead and book early .

Things to Do in London At Christmas Time

Celebrate the holidays in true British fashion.

christmas market

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

From Christmas markets and ice skating to festive afternoon tea, London is the perfect place to spend your holiday vacation. Below, a few festive ideas to add to your itinerary.

Admire the Christmas Trees and Lights

Christmas tree in Trafalger Square at dusk

To say London embraces holiday decor is quite the understatement. In particular, the English capital knows how to decorate a Christmas tree. Head to Trafalgar Square to see a massive spruce all decked out in lights, an annual gift from Norway given every year since 1947.

Landmark, Sky, Architecture, Lighting, Christmas lights, Tree, Christmas decoration, Christmas eve, World, Christmas,

Other notable spots to see lights include Oxford Street, Carnaby Street, Covent Garden, Regent Street, and the South Bank.

Stay Somewhere Festive

london penthouse

Just around the corner from Trafalgar Square and Whitehall, Corinthia London is the coziest Christmas spot for those who like to be in the center of everything on the outside of the hotel, but away from it all as soon as they step inside. The hotel’s restaurant and library area is decked out as a lush alpine winter garden and hosting festive high tea and celebratory Christmas and New Year’s Eve dinners. Recover from all the revelry the next day at the ESPA Life spa, which offers Dr. Barbara Sturm facials, relaxation pools, and massages. For a truly memorable holiday, book one of the seven penthouses for a magical escape replete with a fireplace, Christmas tree, access to a private wine collection, and personal butler.

onefinestay

For those traveling with a large family or who are planning to stay for several weeks (take advantage of remote work!) onefinestay , which offers luxury rental apartments and homes, is getting extra cheery by setting up fully decorated Christmas trees, garlands, and tablescapes by London florists Hayford & Rhodes upon request as well as delivering another fun British tradition: Christmas hampers.

Go Ice Skating

Building, Human settlement, City, Public space, Architecture, Town square, Plaza, Tourism, Recreation, Tourist attraction,

There’s no more British a way to embrace the cold weather than by lacing up your skates, and hitting Somerset House’s open-air rink ( above ). Zoom around the courtyard (or scoot along the edge, holding onto the rail—hey! We don’t judge) all while enjoying the beautiful Christmas tree. Then, warm up with a cocktail and a view of the ice in the Skate Lounge or pop in the Fortnum's Christmas Arcade to sneak in a little holiday shopping. Consider yourself a night owl? New last year was a program called "Skate Lates," which brought special music guests to the rink in the evenings.

Skating is also available at Hampton Court Palace and at the Natural History Museum .

Or Try Curling at King's Cross

Kings Cross is a delightful newly renovated section of London that is home to loads of shops, restaurants, and activations for Christmas. This winter book a 45-minute curling session (which comes with its own Club Curling Bar for fuel), then stroll over to C oal Drops Yard for dinner at British designer Tom Dixon’s Coal Office , which offers up Mediterranean shared plates in a buzzy, yet relaxed setting created by Chef Assaf Granit—make sure to book in advance, it is a local favorite.

Shop for Gifts

Whether you prefer strolling through pop-up holiday bazaars or spending a full day at Harrod’s (complete with a trip to see Father Christmas), this shopping capital has something for everyone on your list. We recommend making a trip to Liberty London for beautiful accessories in the line’s signature prints, the latest beauty must-haves, and a gorgeous selection of stationery. Arket next door is a go-to for on-trend staples; their denim is perfect for gifting yourself. Then slide over to Savile Road and get the men in your life monogrammed handkerchiefs. If you’re searching for the perfect fashion-forward present, head to Dover Street Market , for wares from innovative brands like Comme des Garçons, Raf Simons, Erdem, and Thom Browne among many, many others.

Need more shopping ideas? Here's our complete guide to the best Christmas markets in London .

Partake in Afternoon Tea

A full tea service is ideal any afternoon in London (We recommend making a reservation the first day you land, to help beat jetlag), but it’s a particularly nice way to warm up when it’s chilly outside. Kick off the holiday season at Sketch , whose pink interiors are Instagram-worthy any time of year, but at Christmas has been transformed into the Glade, a lovely wintry forest. For a classic experience, indulge at Fortnum & Mason . If hot chocolate is more your speed, stop by Knoops , a small chain of hot chocolate cafes where you order your drink with your desired percentage of cocoa, from 28 to 100 percent.

Visit Hogwarts in the Snow.

For fans of the Harry Potter series, the Warner Brothers Studio Tour really comes to life in the wintertime. In the weeks before the holidays, the attraction is transformed to include Christmas trees lining the Great Hall, and a festive-looking Gryffindor common room.

Attend Christmas Services

st pauls cathedral christmas

If going to church is part of your annual holiday tradition, St. Paul’s Cathedral is just one of many offering services.

Eat British Staples… and Then Try Omakase

beaverbrook

Cold weather is the best time of year to enjoy a Sunday roast and sticky toffee pudding, not to mention a pint or two. Thomas Cubitt in Belgravia deliveries all of that and then some, you’ll never dismiss traditional British meals again. Then, move onto London’s other classic cuisine: Indian. Dishoom is an all-around favorite, with Bombay comfort food and live jazz music; they don’t take reservations so stop by in the late afternoon to put your name down (be prepared for a two-hour wait) while you have a cocktail or go shopping nearby. As a grand finale, treat yourself to omakase at the Beaverbrook Townhouse Fuji Grill . Omakase chef Goemon Ishikawa has curated a two-hour experience with a seasonal menu that is perfectly on point. And, unlike other Japanese dining experiences, it is topped off with dessert from Beaverbrook’s pastry chef. It is a memorable respite from fish and chips.

Check out the Peter Pan Cup

One of London’s most unique holiday rituals is the annual Peter Pan Cup, where members of the Serpentine Swimming Club jump into lake in Hyde Park for an icy Christmas Day race. Unfortunately (...or fortunately depending on your perspective), visitors can’t partake in the festivities, but it’s almost more fun to bundle up and watch the event.

Take a Weekend Trip

coworth park

If your itinerary allows, Coworth Park is an excursion well-worth undertaking. Located about an hour’s drive outside London (just under two hours by train), the former 18 th century manor home in Ascot is now a Dorchester hotel, nestled amidst world-class polo fields (Prince William and Harry are regulars). Book the newly renovated North Lodge on the property—the former gatekeeper’s cottage turned three-bedroom residence is ideal for large families or friends and absolutely perfect for those traveling with children (make sure to book them an equestrian lesson, Coworth has great ponies for littles, and horses for yourself). Don’t skip the toffee pudding on Sundays at the Michelin-starred restaurant or chips (fries) and a martini at their more casual restaurant, the Barn.

the dorchester collection coworth park

At this point you are probably bursting, but it is worth mentioning that all of Coworth Park's chocolate is handmade on the premises. Work it off with a swim at the spa, surrounded by amethyst crystals, a long stroll around the property (see if you can spy the home where John Lennon wrote and filmed the music video for Imagine ), or that aforementioned horse ride. If you have trouble summoning up the motivation to return to London, we don’t blame you.

Rumor has it, he'll be making appearances at both Royal Albert Hall and the Museum of London .

1. Covent Garden

London for christmas Covent garden

There’s no better place to celebrate a London Christmas than Covent Garden . Covent Garden is one of the most famed places in the city. It is an ornate shopping and entertainment center in London’s theatrical West End neighborhood. At Christmas, though, this magical place transforms again, hosting a small Christmas market, thousands of festive lights and decorations, and even fake snow flurries between 12 pm and 9 pm each day. The fake snow is on the hour in West Piazza – you won’t miss it.

Covent Garden is one of the best places for undercover Christmas shopping and a reliable white Christmas.

2. Try Mulled Wine

London for christmas mulled wine

Another thing you can’t have a London Christmas without is mulled wine. Luckily, there’s no shortage of this tasty festive drink in the city. You can find delicious mulled wine all over London. The drink is just piping hot red wine with spices like cinnamon. You can find it at pop-up bars and established drinking holes like The Hawk’s Nest in Shepherd’s Bush. Mr Fogg’s Tavern is also a great spot for delicious mulled wine. Wander through the Christmas markets and see if you can spot some to takeaway, or head for a cozy seat inside one of the London pubs.

3. Hogwarts in the Snow

Hogwarts in the Snow at Christmas in London

Everyone knows about London’s Harry Potter studio experience. But did you know it hosts a Christmas special? Hogwarts in the Snow is a way for fans to celebrate Christmas in the wizarding world and runs generously between mid-November and mid-January. There’s everything from Christmas trees in the Great Hall and Yule Ball dance lessons. Of course, you’ll see fake snow everywhere – a definite plus with London’s hit-and-miss white Christmases.

You must book tickets in advance, which costs around $60 per person. And it might be best to book a guided tour that includes transport, because the studio is located north of the city center, and is difficult to reach without a car.

4. winter wonderland in hyde park.

London for christmas Hyde Park market

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is a Christmas destination in its own right. Seriously, this place is enormous. If you want to embrace the Christmas spirit in central London, this is one of the most sought-after and famous festive events to do so at. It transforms Hyde Park into a Bavarian-esque winter wonderland, with huge tents selling Christmas cocktails and German beer, a fairground, food stalls, and rustic pop-up stalls selling handmade gifts and sweet treats. And that’s not to mention its massive ice bar and ice skating rink. Everyone goes to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, but you can see why.

For a bit of festive cheer, you can’t go wrong. Remember to book in advance (directly on the official website to avoid scams), as it sells out quickly.

5. Go Ice Skating

London for christmas Ice skating somerset house

Speaking of festive cheer, what about going ice skating as a standalone activity? Ice rinks are easily one of the most classic festive activities. When in London, you’ll have dozens at your fingertips. There’s the obvious choice of the ice rink in Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. But there’s also the Canary Wharf Ice Rink, JW3 Ice Rink, and even one at the foot of Battersea Power Station. When we say London has lots of ice rinks, we really mean it. Pick one (or two) and get your skates ready.

Enjoying the rinks is one of the best things to do in London this Christmas. Here is a list of all of the rinks in London this season.

6. Watch a Christmas Concert

London for christmas Royal albert hall

You can’t be in London at Christmas and not check out one of the Christmas concerts. Carol singing and Christmas songs are the best ways to get in a festive mood. Many of London’s events are hosted in beautiful venues, like the Royal Albert Hall , which hosts traditional concerts and Christmas carol performances. St. Paul’s Cathedral is another good spot for Christmas carols in festive, atmospheric performances. Our recommendation? Plan to attend at least one concert when celebrating Christmas in London. The stunning venues and traditional experience of carol singing make it the ideal addition to your festive itinerary.

7. Leicester Square

Leicester square in London at Chritmas

Leicester Square is where to be this Christmas in London. Every year, the square is decked with an all-action Christmas market that runs for two months, selling everything from food to mulled wine and offering free entrance. However, we’ll cover Christmas markets in more detail later.

What we really love about Leicester Square are its street performers, which take on extra festive inspiration throughout December and into January. Leicester Square is action-packed and dramatic, and the public space pulls out all the stops during the festive season. If you want free things to do in London this Christmas, visiting Leicester Square should be one of your top choices.

8. Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey in London Christmas Eve

Everyone knows Westminster Abbey – the home of British politics and religion, for better or worse. You can take guided tours through the Abbey throughout the year, admiring its grand architecture. However, what’s really exciting is Westminster Abbey at Christmas.

You can attend numerous free events at Westminster Abbey in December, including the First Eucharist of Christmas Night and even the Christmas Day Holy Communion. There’s even a Royal Carol Service, where HRH hosts the festivities. When it comes to Westminster Abbey, you’ve just got to keep your eye on its calendar. The Abbey really goes to town with Christmas events in December.

9. london bridge.

London Bridge City Christmas Market

London Bridge is an iconic part of the London skyline and embraces an annual Christmas theme. Not only does the famous landmark run a Christmas market, but the London Bridge Rooftop transforms into a magical festive experience for adults. The covered venue whacks out DJ sets, mulled wine, baubles, and Christmas lights – plus a packed menu of festive cocktails and meals. The whole area around London Bridge becomes a hive of activity, so definitely add London Bridge and its surrounding neighborhood to your list of things to do in London this December.

The 1970s bridge is a classic bit of architecture and a real hub for Christmas cheer. You can walk across and admire the festive lights along the banks of the River Thames. Or you can head to the nearby London Bridge Rooftop and Christmas market.

10. Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square in London at Christmas

Trafalgar Square is one of the most famous landmarks in London and attracts millions of tourists each year. At Christmas, though, there’s even more reason to stop by. The square has transformed into a festive masterpiece and currently boasts a 70-foot tree transported from Norway. It is part of a tradition that has been going on since 1947, with Norway gifting London a Christmas tree each year in exchange for Britain’s assistance in World War II. Because of the Norwegian link, it is also typically decorated in Norwegian style with vertical Christmas lights.

You can head to Trafalgar Square, admire the tree, listen to the carol singers, and watch any street performers. The story behind Trafalgar Square’s Christmas tree is wholesome and a poignant reminder of the tragedies of World War II – making visiting one of the most popular things to do in London at Christmas. Besides, what’s a London Christmas without a tree or two?

11. Somerset House

Somerset House Ice Skating in London

Somerset House is a leading attraction in London, and the neoclassical building in central London houses plenty of artistic and cultural exhibits. The most famous of these is the Courtauld Gallery, an art gallery featuring the esteemed piece Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear by the beloved Vincent Van Gogh. It is a brilliant place to visit all year round. Still, there’s something about art galleries at Christmas that is just extra special. Escape from the cold and wet, and enjoy looking at some of the most valuable art in England.

What really makes Somerset House so festive, though, is its vast ice skating rink outside. You can spend a few hours admiring the art, then head out to ice skate and let your hair down.

Guided Tour: Courtauld Gallery Entrance at Somerset House

12. kew gardens.

christmas at Kew Gardens in London

Kew Gardens is a place of extreme beauty on the outskirts of London. The botanical garden comes to life every winter with extra special features, including a festive light trail that wows visitors with elaborate light installations. You walk through the gardens admiring art features like a water fountain exploding with illuminated colors or golden light tunnels. Kew Gardens is a beautiful place to celebrate Christmas, and walking through such creative displays at night is fantastic. There are even vendors selling hot chocolate and piping hot festive foods along the way.

You must book in advance for Kew Gardens as it is – understandably – very popular. However, it runs from November until January, so you can squeeze in there at some point.

13. Watch a Musical or West End Show

West End Show Shakespeares Globe Theatre

West End plays run all year round, but nothing feels more festive than getting dressed up for a West End production in December. The cozy and indulgent vibe is unrivaled. And you can indulge in a champagne and settle into a warm seat while you relax with an evening of entertainment. West End productions run on loops, with regular shows like The Lion King.

However, you can also catch festive film adaptations in other theaters across London, finding play adaptations of classics like Charles Dickens. If you want a play alternative to a Christmas film, this is the best idea for your itinerary. Check out theater performances that coincide with the dates you visit London.

14. Kensington Palace

London for christmas Kensington Palace

If you are visiting London at Christmas, you have to stop by a royal residence or two. Kensington Palace is home to Will and Kate and their children, but part of the palace is open to the public almost daily. Take advantage of this classic tourist attraction and peek at some of the grandest Christmas decorations in the city.

Kensington Palace also opened the Luna Winter Cinema , which shows open-air Christmas films. The whole place comes alive with Christmas cheer. And for a homely – if extremely grand – aesthetic, Kensington Palace is one of the best Christmas versions of classic London attractions.

Guided Tour: Kensington Palace Entrance

15. hampton court.

Hampton Court Palace is always a good idea to visit in London. The palace was actually home to Henry the 8th – an extremely notorious figure in UK history. However, it comes even more to life each Christmas, with a giant ice skating rink, stunning decorations, and a Christmas market with over 100 artisan producers. Hampton Court Palace at Christmas is beautiful. There are even carriage rides with shire horses around the palace grounds. And if you catch it on a snow day, just thank your lucky stars. The red brick building looks gorgeous in the snow.

You can buy tickets to Hampton Court Palace online. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and is open from Wednesday until Sunday from 10 am until 4:00 pm.

Neverland winterland igloos

This bar is the best in London if you are an adult but a big kid deep down. Neverland London is where to embrace your inner Peter Pan, with an artificial beach club through summer and a winter wonderland through the festive season. At Christmas, Neverland transforms into an alpine village with igloos, lodges, and even a ski lift that you can dine and drink in.

Queen of Hoxton in London at Christmas

When in London at Christmas, the Queen of Hoxton is a must-visit venue. It is situated in trendy Shoreditch – who doesn’t love this cool London neighborhood – and runs a different Christmas theme each year. In 2023, this is gothic Venice, and its winter rooftop beer and cocktail garden will be suitably decked out.

There’s everything from gondola seating to Italian chandeliers. If you want somewhere to admire the London scenery and have a fancy drink, the Queen of Hoxton is the ideal place to visit. The pub has three levels, plus its stunning rooftop area.

18. Watch or Participate in the Santa Run London

The Santa Run London is one of the most hilarious things you’ll see. Thousands of contestants dressed in Santa costumes sprint their way through the city center on 5k or 10k routes. The whole event is designed to raise money for charity, and the fit amongst you can take part, while those that prefer to watch can enjoy the spectacle of thousands of Santas running around London.

Participating in or watching the Santa Run London is one of the most unique and funny things to do in the city at Christmas. You won’t see it on the standard tourist list, but that’s half the allure. Embrace the British sense of humor and get involved.

There are a handful of Santa running events in December, but the main one is around Victoria Park.

19. Hyde Park’s Serpentine

Hyde Park's Serpentine christmas swim

If you are brave, you can participate in the Peter Pan Cup – a.k .a. a mad swim around a 100-meter course in Serpentine Lake on Christmas Day- where the winner is awarded a trophy. The quirky attraction draws in the bravest possible contestants. The first race was held in 1864 when the author of  Peter Pan  awarded the winning trophy to the triumphant contestant. This is what gives the race its name.

You can compete or, if you aren’t feeling like freezing water on Christmas Day, watch from the banks of Serpentine Lake.

London for christmas Walk Regent Street

Walking down Regent Street is one of the best things to do in London at Christmas. The street is famed for high-end shops like Burberry, and in December, you can admire all the decorations in Christmas windows. Regent Street is also where you’ll find some of the most dramatic Christmas lights in the city. As a busy, safe area of London, it is ideal for solo travelers to explore and embrace a festive evening in the city.

Walking down Regent Street is aesthetic and ideal for last-minute shopping. It is a safe and easy activity to squeeze into even the busiest London itineraries. Most shops close at 8 or 9 pm, so we suggest heading there around 5-7 pm.22. Natural History Museum

London for christmas Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is famous. You’ve definitely heard of it before. It might not have struck you as a Christmas attraction, but don’t be fooled; this museum has much on its sleeve regarding festive cheer. The Natural History Museum has Christmas and winter-themed workshops and pop-up activities. Just check its website to see what’s on when you are in London.

There’s also a Christmas at the Museum event on the 22nd of December and Storytelling with Santa sessions from the 11th to the 23rd of December in 2023. The Santa experience includes a gift and a private photo opportunity. If you are traveling with young children, this is an absolute must.

23. Shopping on Oxford Street

Shopping on Oxford Street at Christmas in London

Nothing beats a Christmas shop. With the excitement, the music, the crowds, and the Christmas lights, it is the most lively time of the year to go shopping. Armed with a long list of present ideas, it is no wonder that people like to splurge so much when shopping in London, which has some of the best shops in Europe. At Christmas, Oxford Street is one of the best places to head. In 2023, it is decorated with 300,000 floating stars strung over the street in scenic zigzags. And you can head down to window shop or grab last-minute presents under the stars.

25. Head to London Christmas Markets

London Christmas Markets

We have already touched on Christmas markets while discussing the other best things to do in London at Christmas. However, markets are such a big part of the holiday season that we just  had  to dedicate an entire section to them. These markets typically run for December, but you get the odd early birds running from November and stragglers continuing into January. The best markets in London are:

  • Spitalfields
  • Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland
  • Fleet Street
  • Covent Garden
  • Leicester Square.

You can grab drinks and food from festive takeaway stalls. Or you can shop for artisan and handmade presents or decorations like hand-painted baubles.

26. London Christmas Lights Bus Tour

London for christmas Bus Tour

When visiting London, you have to admire the Christmas lights. Dazzling lights and displays dangling across the streets are one of the most famous types of Christmas decorations and something for the whole family to enjoy. London really goes to town on Christmas lights. The city practically lights up with twinkling, extravagant, festive-themed lighting decorations.

The best way to see as many of London’s Christmas lights as possible is with an open-top bus tour. These buses take you through the center of London, passing the most beautiful lights and giving you the best seat in the house – watching the lights pass from a rooftop perch. The Christmas lights are so close you can almost touch them, and you’ll get to see everything without the chaos of crowds on the street level below. If you are going to do just one thing in London this Christmas, this would be our top recommendation.

Lady’s Festive London Christmas Itinerary

Today I want to share my London Christmas itinerary with you. London is worth visiting during Christmas for its festive atmosphere, colorful lights, great shopping, and fun events and entertainment. There’s a lot to experience in the UK capital during the Yuletide season, and in this post I want to highlight some of the best things to do in London at Christmas.

London Christmas Itinerary

London Christmas Itinerary

Like all my themed London itineraries , my Christmas itinerary will show you the top places to go in the city in the run-up to December 25th.

Covent Garden Piazza at Christmas

This itinerary covers a 2-day period, but you can adjust it to fit your needs if you have more or less time in the UK capital. As always, be sure to check opening hours before you travel, and make advance bookings where relevant.

You can also take a Christmas walking tour, bus tour, or black cab tour in London if you want a guided experience. You can book one through GetYourGuide . They’re fun ways to see the highlights of the festive season in the city.

Christmas Tree at Somerset House in London

When to Visit London at Christmas

But when exactly should you visit? A lot of people ask me when the Christmas lights, trees, markets, and decorations start to pop up around London (and when they come down).

While there’s no exact date, most lights are switched on in early to mid-November. They usually stay up until the first few days of January. The same goes for the city’s Christmas markets, ice skating rinks, and other festive fixtures.

Royal Arcade at Christmas

That said, some lights and decorations go up earlier and/or come down later (I’ve seen Christmas trees in London in October), so it’s a good idea to check online if you have something specific you want to see.

Apple Market in Covent Garden, London at Christmas

Keep in mind that winter in London means limited daylight hours and the potential for cold weather, too. You can take a look at my winter packing list and my guide to the weather in London for more information.

As always, a good umbrella is key. If you’re in the UK, I recommend this umbrella . If you’re in the US, this one is just the thing .

Covent Garden Christmas Tree

Day 1 – Morning

Start the first day of your London Christmas itinerary in Covent Garden . Not only is this one of the most exciting parts of the city center, but also one of the most Christmassy places in London. It’s a must on any trip to the UK capital during the festive season.

Covent Garden Christmas Decorations

The Piazza is decorated with lights and a giant Christmas tree, and the shops around it offer some of the best Christmas shopping in London .

Christmas Tree in Covent Garden

Day 1 – Afternoon

After a busy morning taking in the Christmas fun in Covent Garden, continue your itinerary by making your way to Piccadilly via Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square.

Trafalgar Square Christmas Market

There are Christmas markets in both squares, and you can pick up festive food, drinks, and gifts as you make your way around them. The market in Trafalgar Square is particularly stunning with the National Gallery in the background.

London Umbrella at a Christmas market in Trafalgar Square

Once on Piccadilly, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping. Fortnum & Mason has a famous Christmas shop. It’s a great place to pick up ornaments for your tree and gifts for family and friends.

Christmas Shopping in London

You can also browse the boutiques in the historic shopping arcades on and around Piccadilly. They’re always decked out in lights and ribbons during the festive season. From Burlington Arcade to Piccadilly Arcade, they’re a treat to see.

Burlington Arcade at Christmas in London

Afterwards you can walk over to Bond Street to browse the luxury goods shops and take in the eye-catching Christmas facades the area is known for.

Bond Street Christmas decorations

Day 1 – Evening

When day turns to dusk (which will be around 4pm at this time of year), you can start taking in London’s iconic Christmas lights . They’re spectacular every year.

Regent Street Christmas Lights in London

The ones on Piccadilly always sparkle, and the lights on Bond Street, Regent Street, Carnaby Street, and Oxford Street are a must.

They’re all within walking distance of one another, so you can easily make an evening of seeing the lights.

Regent Street Shops in London at Christmas

If you have time afterwards, you can head to a performance or show in the West End. From carol concerts to traditional British pantos, there’s a lot on offer during the Christmas season in London.

Alternatively, you can go ice skating at Somerset House. Its historic courtyard is home to one of the most beautiful rinks in the city. It’s worth a special trip.

Christmas Tree at Somerset House in London

Day 2 – Morning

Start the second day of your London Christmas itinerary at Winter Wonderland . This annual extravaganza in Hyde Park is part amusement park, part Christmas market, and part carnival.

Winter Wonderland in London

There’s everything from rides to chalets selling food and gifts here. Add to that ice skating and circus performances, and this place has it all.

Winter Wonderland Ferris Wheel

I like going in the morning since Winter Wonderland can get crowded in the afternoon and throughout the evening. You can always go back later for a drink and some festive fun if you want to, though.

Winter Wonderland Food Stalls

Day 2 – Afternoon

After exploring Winter Wonderland, walk over to Knightsbridge for some more Christmas cheer. You can check out the famous window displays at Harrods and Harvey Nichols, do some shopping, and get lunch.

Harrods at Christmas in London

When you’re done, you can walk down Sloane Street to reach Chelsea . Sloane Square always has fun decorations and lights, and the King’s Road is a great place to pick up fashionable festive gifts.

Kings Road Christmas Facade

Day 2 – Evening

When evening comes, make your way to the South Bank. The annual Winter Festival has a Christmas market with chalets selling Christmas food and festive drinks .

There are twinkling lights, pop-ups, and outdoor exhibitions, too. Add to that live entertainment, and there’s no shortage of fun to be found here.

12 best things to do in London at Christmas

‘tis the season to enjoy the festivities – and there’s no better place to experience christmas cheer than london.

travel london christmas

L ondon shines bright during the festive season, from the warm glow of the lights on the huge tree in Trafalgar Square to the sequin-filled window displays in Oxford Street. Head to the capital to shop for stocking fillers in some of the world’s best department stores, glug mulled wine as you wander along the South Bank, and dine in an igloo to get in the spirit. Here’s our pick of the best things to do in London at Christmas.

Main photo: the Magical Ice Kingdom at Winter Wonderland

1. Get your skates on

The most festive pick of the bunch is Somerset House — the Georgian building makes the perfect backdrop for a magical night on the ice. If you fall down, pick yourself up afterwards with a steaming cup of hot chocolate from the Hotel Chocolat truck, or a refreshing glass of fizz provided by Moët & Chandon at the skate lounge. Book a table at Chalet Suisse by Jimmy Garcia to finish your night with fondue and raclette.

2. Take a festive bus tour with mulled wine

See the best of London’s lights and festive window displays by hopping on one of Tootbus’ Christmas Lights hour-long open-top bus tours through the capital’s best shopping streets to the soundtrack of classic Christmas hits. Kick things up a notch with the Tootbus Bar Bus experience, which serves mulled wine and Bailey’s hot chocolate on board.

3. Have a retro Christmas at Miracle by Henrietta

No decade screams Christmas quite like the Seventies. It’s when some of the season’s biggest soundtracks dropped – think Elton’s Step into Christmas and Lonely this Christmas by Mud – and tinsel-covered trees and tassels were bang on trend. Get your fill of both at Miracle by Henrietta, a gloriously over-the-top cocktail bar inspired by a seventies home at Yuletide where you can sip festive-themed drinks served in dinosaur and santa-shaped mugs underneath a ceiling covered in ultra-kitsch decorations. The bar is lit by the face of a giant Santa and manned by a set of cocktail-shaking elves. Make a night of it with a stay at the equally retro Henrietta Hotel with art-deco bathrooms and beds backed by quirky headboards.

4. See the city’s best Christmas light displays

If spectacular light displays don’t get you feeling festive, then nothing will. Recharge your Christmas spirit with a stroll through the city’s best displays in Carnaby Street and Marylebone and pair it with some late-night Christmas shopping; most shops stay open until 9pm on Oxford Street.

5. Find stocking fillers at Kingston Christmas Market

Kingston’s Ancient Market Place has been transformed into a European-style Christmas market where wooden huts lining its streets are filled with food, drink, gifts and festive cheer. Until December 24, you can sip pints of German beer and eat bratwurst while you watch live music; there are shows every day so check the schedule beforehand to get a front-row seat for your favourite local artists.

The Winter Festival along the South Bank has pop-up bars, Christmas market huts, food stalls and art against a backdrop of the Thames. Stop at Fire and Fromage for a glass of mulled wine, all-you-can-eat raclette, charcuterie and s’mores for £35pp while keeping cosy around the wood-burning fires. There’s also the option to book an igloo (groups of up to ten welcome, minimum spend £650 at lunch or dinner).

7. Dine above the city

Duck & Waffle, on the 40th floor of the Salesforce Tower in the City, has always had magical views; but this year’s winter wonderland theme elevates the Christmas dining experience. Bask in the snowscape as you sip a Waffle on the Rocks cocktail and save space for a sticky toffee waffle. Come after dark to take in the sparkling City skyline.

8. Sing carols in Trafalgar Square

The arrival of the great Norwegian spruce at Trafalgar Square signals the real start of Christmas for most Londoners. Crowds from across the UK come to admire it and the square becomes the perfect spot to meet with friends, listen to carols and be merry. Carol singing takes place until December 24 and runs from 2pm to 9pm, so take a look at the programme online to see what takes your fancy. Groups can book one hour slots to assemble at the base of the Christmas tree and fill the square with the sounds of their festive cheer.

They may not be reindeer, but the red and fallow deer in Richmond Park are a close second so wrap up your little ones and explore (some of) its 2,360 acres on foot. The deer were introduced for hunting in 1637, and the park is now a safe haven for the 600 of them roaming around the grassland. Richmond is connected by National Rail and the District line, and then it’s a brisk walk to the park itself — or there’s free car parking around the park.

10. Get on Santa’s nice list at Hamleys

Santa’s grotto is open for business on the third floor of Hamleys, the largest toy shop in the world. Rumour has it that those on the good list will take home a personalised gift — make sure you let the elves know your family’s names and your favourite things to do beforehand. You have to pre-book the grotto, and one ticket allows access for groups of three people, including one adult.

Free workshops in Fleet Street will teach participants how to make Christmas wreaths (Alamy)

11. Create festive freebies on Fleet Street

There’s no sign of Scrooge on Fleet Street this Christmas. Instead, you can enjoy 12 days of free workshops which take place until December 14. Participants can create natural wreaths with terrarium specialists Jar and Fern and homemade Christmas gin with the City of London Distillery. There’s also a flurry of carol concerts, poetry performances and markets popping up alongside a 20-foot tree and plenty of cosy spots to glug a mulled wine or two. Pull up a stool at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, one of London’s oldest boozers and a favourite of Charles Dickens, or tuck into a charcuterie board at the former favourite of journalists, El Vino.

12. Get cosy inside an igloo

Dine under the stars at Coppa Club, which has heated igloos where you’ll be peering out at the lights on the South Bank and snapping photos against a backdrop of Tower Bridge and the Shard. Each is decked out with rich merlot reds and moss greens, as well as gorgeous dried foliage hanging from above. The festive menu will get you in the Christmas spirit, too — save space for the spiced cranberry and white chocolate cheesecake.

How to Spend a Classic Christmas in London

Christmas in London has a certain kind of timeless appeal. Throughout the holiday season, trees stand silhouetted in the windows of Georgian townhouses; the pubs are cozy and packed, no matter the time of day; and fireplaces flicker within the city’s grand hotels and bustling restaurants. It might as well be a scene out of A Christmas Carol. Whether you’re a local or one of the millions of tourists who visit every year, there are always a few Christmas traditions that even the most jaded Londoner will indulge in: say, yes to ice skating at Somerset House, visiting the towering tree in Trafalgar Square, and snapping pics of the department store windows —and no to visiting Oxford Street.

In the spirit of festive goodwill, we've planned a whole day around these outings. Whether you’re looking for the perfect place for afternoon tea , a steak to tuck into after a day spent gift shopping, or a martini to sip on Christmas Eve, your Christmas in London is covered.

This article was originally published in December 2016. It has been updated with new information.

Ice skating at Somerset House

We love renting skates and gliding around the frozen 18th-century courtyard of Somerset House , a sprawling neoclassical building off the Strand; a little hot chocolate from one of the cafés that line the rink doesn't hurt, either.

Where it is: On the North Side of the River Thames, near Waterloo Bridge. Tube stops Temple, Charing Cross, Embankment, and Covent Garden are all close.

Where to eat nearby: Hungry? Book a table in advance at Michelin-starred Spring , arguably one of the most beautiful restaurants in London.

Where to drink nearby: If you need a stiff drink after a few turns (and falls) on the ice, walk along the Strand to The Savoy and into its American Bar , which has been crowned the best bar in the world more than once. Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, and even the Queen Mother visited the 19th-century mirrored bar, and its menu pays tribute to the songs played by the bar's resident pianist Jon Nickoll: 'Sun Sun Sun' is a gin cocktail inspired by The Beatles' Here Comes the Sun ; 'Dreamer' is a vodka-based ode to Frank Sinatra's voice; 'Go Go Go' is a celebration of the music of Amy Winehouse.

Shopping at Fortnum & Mason

For most of the year, people go to Fortnum & Mason for the afternoon tea; but at Christmas, you go the 311-year-old department store for the hampers. They're filled to the brim with Turkish delight, champagne, caviar, sweet marmalades, pungent stilton, and gooey French cheeses. The yuletide staple sells out every year—an impressive feat, considering the most decadent hampers cost £6,000 ($7,740). Regardless, a trip to the food hall will help you stock up on traditional eats like Christmas puddings (to be drenched in booze and set alight on Christmas Day), cookies filled with pistachio and clotted cream, and Earl Grey tea (or single malt whiskey) produced by Highgrove Estate, the royal residence owned by Prince Charles.

Fortnum’s is also a destination for its window decorations, and this year, the display is dedicated to one of things the department store does best: tea, of course.

Where it is: In a prime position on Piccadilly, it's accessed easily via Piccadilly Circus tube station, or Green Park for fewer crowds.

Where to eat nearby: Sink into Italian comforts while rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous at Cecconi's Mayfair .

Where to drink nearby: Fortnum & Mason's own wine bar, in the food court, is a hidden gem.

Window Shop At Burlington Arcade

Once you're done, cross the street and visit Burlington Arcade to feel like you’ve stepped into the heart of 19th-century London. Established in 1819, it's only on Piccadilly because the then-owner of Burlington House (now the Royal Academy ), Lord George Cavendish, was so irked by Londoners slurping oysters and scattering the empty shells outside that he decided to build the luxury shopping arcade to shield his house from the pesky trash. Nowadays, it’s home to brands like Chanel, but also some uniquely British vendors, like cobbler Harrys of London and high-end homeware store Linley. The Christmas decorations are always a highlight, with wreaths, trees, and ribbons adorning almost every open surface in the arcade.

Where it is: Opposite Fortnum & Mason.

Where to eat nearby: One of the most beautiful settings for afternoon tea is the Art Deco foyer of Claridge's . Dine on classic sandwiches (choose from caviar, smoked salmon, and cream cheese fillings), scones, and pastries just like we like to think Jackie Onassis did, and consult one of the on-hand tea connoisseurs to get your pairing just right. It will be hard to miss Claridge’s Christmas tree : This year's 19-footer is actually a sculpture designed by Christian Louboutin, accompanied by a romantic train carriage titled 'The Loubi Express' in the designer's trademark red. Also newly-opened inside the iconic hotel is restaurant Davies and Brook, the latest offering from Daniel Humm and Will Guidara of

Eleven Madison Park

Where to drink nearby: The Connaught Bar is another frequent big-hitter on the world's best bars list. Try the Connaught Martini, as well as the Fleurissimo, created as a tribute to a notable former guest: Princess Grace of Monaco.

Visit Liberty Department Store

Need to pick up some last-minute gifts, or perhaps you just want to treat yourself? Either way, meander over to Liberty for another Christmas display—this year decorated with jewels and crystals flanked by the building's famous dark paneling—and do a spot of shopping at the wood-paneled department store. Pick up some Liberty print accessories, ornaments for the tree, and stockings to stuff before whiling away an hour or so in the legendary scarf room.

Where it is: Steps away from the Oxford Circus tube stop.

Where to eat (and drink) nearby: You've earned a break by now: Have a drink or dinner at Michelin-starred restaurant Sketch Gallery in Mayfair. Thought Spring's decor was breathtaking? This 18th-century Georgian townhouse is worth a visit for the quirky (and majorly Instagrammable) interiors alone: the emerald green Glade bar, with its forest-like, Victorian-era wallpaper; the rose pink gallery room, lined with artwork by David Shrigley. Given the lengths Sketch went to celebrate the Chelsea Flower Show , expect equally over-the-top decorations in Britain’s coolest restaurant over Christmas.

Sketch London Restaurant Christmas

Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree

While not quite as bad as Rome’s controversial spruce , Londoners weren't particularly pleased with the Trafalgar Square tree a few years ago (a "gherkin draped in lights" was just one insult). That doesn't mean you should skip it. The tree has a storied tradition, after all: Every year since 1947, the city of Oslo has donated a tree to London to show lasting gratitude for the the support Britain provided during World War II. Time your visit to catch the daily carolers beneath the tree, who will be there every evening through December 24.

Where it is: Steps from Charing Cross station.

Where to eat (and drink) nearby: Escape the cold and dip into the National Gallery to gaze at Van Gogh's sunflowers, before lunch at Rochelle Canteen at the ICA . Decidedly low-key but still buzzy—expect to run into everyone from artists to food critics to the fashion crowd here—the menu changes daily but is chock-full of creative, upscale twists on classic British dishes: radishes dipped in creamy smoked cod’s roe; piping hot guinea fowl and mushroom pie; classic rhubarb trifle. If you don't fancy turning things into a three-hour meal, we suggest grabbing a seat at the bar.

Visit The Queen's Bookshop

Certain British businesses are given something called the Royal Warrant, signifying that they provide their products to the palace as well as the people. Established in 1797, Hatchard's —London's oldest bookshop—has been the Royal supplier for generations of monarchs. With a formidable selection of classic and modern reads, and tasteful Christmas wrapping, visit Hatchard's to buy your last-minute gifts, and to feel like you're in Harry Potter's Flourish and Blotts.

Where it is: Next to Fortnum & Mason. See instructions above.

Where to Eat (and drink) nearby: After visiting Hatchard's, we love to duck inside Gordon's Wine Bar , London’s oldest wine bar, dating back to 1890. Candles light the curved low ceilings of the subterranean bar, which has barely changed in its 200-plus years. Choose a good bottle and hole up for the afternoon with a cheese plate—the more pungent, the better. But be warned: It gets packed at night, so go early to secure yourself a corner at the historic watering hole.

Walk The Grounds of Kenwood House

Up in North London, away from the hustle and bustle of the center, lies Kenwood House . The stately home is hidden in the parkland of Hampstead Heath (local fans include Harry Styles, Liam Gallagher, Dua Lipa and Ricky Gervais) and the walk to get to it, through tree-lined paths and around frozen ponds, is just as satisfying as spotting the building's white facade itself. There's plenty of festivities taking place inside the historic house, too, and this year everything is themed to the 1760s—the decade when Kenwood House was first built.

Where it is: Take the tube to Hampstead Station, then follow Well Walk to Hampstead Heath. From there, it's less than half an hour across to Kenwood.

Where to eat (and drink) nearby: After your most British of hikes, reward yourself with hot drinks and warm, savory pastries at The Brew House, a part of the estate.

Christmas In London: Best Things To Do

Posted on Last updated: June 7, 2021

London is a fantastic place to visit at Christmas time. I’m a little biased because I live in London and I love the city at any time of year, but at Christmas it becomes especially magical.

The city lights up with Christmas decorations and it comes alive with festive markets. Christmas in London actually starts pretty early, with some of the ice-skating rinks and Christmas markets opening up as early as 1 st November.

Which is great, because it means you have plenty of time to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere in London!

Having lived in London for seven years means I tried quite a lot of all the different festive season activities around.

There are loads of Christmassy things to do in London, but if you’re only visiting for a short time you won’t be able to see them all.

In this post I’ve listed all of my personal favourite things to do in London at Christmas, including the best Christmas markets, ice skating rinks, activities, and some practical tips from a Londoner about getting around the city during the busy festive season!

Before you go, have you booked your London hotel already? If not, check out my Londoners guide to the best areas to stay in London

  • 1.1 Visit Winter Wonderland
  • 1.2 Go ice skating at the Natural History Museum
  • 1.3 See the Christmas decorations in & around Oxford Street
  • 1.4 Visit Southbank Christmas Market
  • 1.5 Pair ice-skating at South Bank with a visit to the London Eye!
  • 1.6 Shop at Covent Garden
  • 1.7 Go to Leicester Square Christmas market
  • 1.8 Eat a Christmas roast in a pub!
  • 1.9 Do a festive afternoon tea bus tour
  • 1.10 Try all the Christmas street food!
  • 2 Where to stay during Christmas in London
  • 3 How to get around London at Christmas time

10 best Christmas activities to do in London

Visit winter wonderland.

Winter Wonderland is possible the ultimate Christmas in London activity, and one of the most Christmassy places that you can imagine.

It’s a huge Christmas market located in Hyde Park, with all sorts of food and drinks stalls, fun fair rides, ice-skating, Christmas gifts and Christmas decorations everywhere.

There’s something for everyone and it’s guaranteed to get you in the Christmas mood! Winter Wonderland usually gets set up around mid-November, and is around until the start of January.

It’s also very very busy. If you want to avoid the crowds go during the week in the early afternoon, that way you can enjoy it for a while without crowds and wait for the decorations to light the place up once the sun goes down.

Also, if you can only visit on the weekends or after work when it’s busy, make sure to get off the tube at Green Park instead of Hyde Park Corner.

You’ll walk a little bit longer but trust me, it will be much more pleasant than the mass of people that will be trying to squeeze past you at Hyde Park Corner.

Go ice skating at the Natural History Museum

At Christmas time you will find that ice-skating rinks pop up everywhere around London. There are quite a few in very iconic spots, but my personal favourite is the one at the Natural History Museum.

It usually has a huge Christmas tree in the middle and pretty Christmas lights on the trees everywhere around it.

I used to do ice-skating as a kid and I get pretty competitive about it, I love big ice rinks but since these are a bit lacking in London, the best one you can go to is the Natural History Museum one.

It’s fairly big compared to some of its fellow pop ups around London, and the atmosphere is super festive.

I also personally love the Natural History Museum (can’t help it, they have dinosaurs!) so I like making a trip out of it and visiting both while I’m in the area.

If you go during the day, or early in the Christmas season (they set it up mid November!) it won’t be too busy either which will make it more fun. This is also one of the  best photo spots in London !

See the Christmas decorations in & around Oxford Street

At Christmas they put up decorations and fairy lights everywhere around London. The vast majority of the main streets will have decorations, but there are a couple that have noteworthy Christmas lights up.

My personal favourites are around Oxford Street, Mayfair and Carnaby Street area.

Carnaby Street is always really coloured as it is, but at Christmas they take things up a notch. In Mayfair you will also find the famous Christmas tree of the Annabels gentleman club.

You can’t go inside without being a member but it’s close to Oxford Street so you can easily visit it and snap some photos from outside while visiting the area.

You can pair a visit to this part of London with some serious Christmas shopping, whatever you’re looking for you’re very likely to find it on Oxford Street (just make sure to visit during the week, weekends on Oxford Street can be mental)!

Visit Southbank Christmas Market

I love  street food markets in London . I love them even more when they are Christmas themed. Quite a few street markets pop up in London during the festive season, but my personal favourite is the Southbank one.

It’s located just under the London Eye and along the river, which is a lovely area to visit regardless of the market or not.

They always have amazing food, so you can get food or hot chocolate (or mulled wine, if that’s more your thing) and sip it while watching the sunset over Westminster.

They have great food but also some nice Christmassy souvenirs if you want to buy some presents. Whatever time of the year you’re visiting, Southank is without a doubt one of the   best things to do in South East London with kids .

Pair ice-skating at South Bank with a visit to the London Eye!

I’ve already told you that the Natural History Museum ice rink is my favourite, but there is another one that despite being quite small, is worthy of featuring in this London Christmas bucket list.

Every year they set up a small ice-skating rink just under the London Eye.

Ice-skating at the rink just under the London Eye

Ice-skating at the rink just under the London Eye

It’s not as big or heavily decorated as some of the others, but when you’re located right under the London Eye, with a view of Westminster and Big Ben in the background, you can afford to have less fairy lights up.

If you buy them together you can also get a discounted ticket to the London Eye. It’s the perfect opportunity to pair a typical Christmas activity with an iconic London sightseeing one!

I did it a few years ago on a Saturday morning and was surprised to find that they were both fairly crowd free.

Shop at Covent Garden

Covent Garden is a pretty popular part of London regardless of the time of year, but at Christmas time especially, it lights up with so many decorations that you can’t help but love it.

There will usually be huge decorations above the main market area, and a huge Christmas tree in the square just outside the Apple Market and in front of St Paul’s Church Covent Garden.

It’s a very touristy part of London, but beautiful nonetheless.

You can wander around the Apple Market and have some food there, there are lots of options both for on the go snacks and sit down meals, and then head over to the market to shop for some affordable souvenirs and Christmas gifts.

Go to Leicester Square Christmas market

Another Christmas market in London that I love is the one in Leicester Square. It’s not as big and grand as the others, but it’s exactly why I enjoy it so much.

After the chaos of Winter Wonderland, it’s nice to visit a more normal sized market, where you can wander around without having to queue to enter or being pushed around by others.

At the end of the day, most of the food and gift stalls are the same anyway. I also like the location of it.

Leicester Square is pretty much as central as it gets in London, so you can easily pair a visit to Leicester Square Christmas market with other sightseeing activities around London.

The Christmas market in Leicester Square, London

Eat a Christmas roast in a pub!

All the Christmas markets listed above offer loads of tasty Christmassy street food options (hello mulled wine and huge cinnamon buns) but if you’re looking to sit down for a Christmassy meal, you should definitely head to a typical English pub.

I’m not usually a fan of pub food, but when it comes to Christmas roast, I’m easily swayed.

Christmas roast usually consists of roast turkey with stuffing, potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts, parsnips and pigs in blankets (little sausages wrapped in bacon), all covered with a healthy serving of gravy.

Pretty much all pubs will offer a Christmas meal menu with all the above, dessert and drinks. Prices usually range around £20 to £40 per person, but it massively depends on what part of London the pub is and how fancy it is.

A traditional Christmas roast dinner at a pub in London

Do a festive afternoon tea bus tour

Roast might be the ultimate English Christmas dining experience, but there is another very traditional British meal you have to try while you’re in London at Christmas; afternoon tea.

Afternoon tea is a very typical British meal, where you have tea paired with sandwiches, scones and cakes.

I’ve done a few afternoon teas around London but my favourite is the B Bakery afternoon tea bus tour , since it’s the perfect opportunity to pair a lovely dining experience with some sightseeing.

At Christmas time they have special afternoon tea Christmas menus and the bus will all be decorated with Christmas lights.

Getting ready for our afternoon tea bus tour in London

Afternoon tea bus tour in London – very touristy but also very cool!

Try all the Christmas street food!

You’ve had a traditional English roast dinner, you’ve had a unique afternoon tea bus tour experience, but what about street food?

When you visit the Christmas markets I’ve listed above (or others) make sure to visit on an empty stomach! Amongst all the fun fair rides and Christmas souvenirs you will find plenty of Christmas themed street food.

They tend to be a bit over priced (it is London after all) but are usually really good!

You can usually find all sorts of food like poffertjes (small Dutch pancakes), cinnamon rolls, pretzels, hot dogs and burgers, and lots of drinks choices like beer, mulled wine and hot chocolates!

The abundance of Christmas street food is without a doubt one of the highlights of visiting Europe and especially London in winter .

Where to stay during Christmas in London

A lot of these Christmas activities are spread out across different areas of London, there isn’t really one specific area that is better than others if you want to enjoy Christmas in London.

Public transport is pretty good in London as well so it’s easy to travel around. More than the area that you choose to stay in, make sure you are close to a tube station, so that you’re well connected to everywhere you want to go.

My personal favourite area to stay in London is Angel .

I lived there for three years and I love it because it’s a very central area with lots of bars, shops and restaurants, but it’s still off the main tourist radar, so you’ll only find locals wandering around and it’s not as busy as other parts of central London.

When my parents came to visit they stayed at the Hilton in Angel and loved their stay there.

How to get around London at Christmas time

Getting around London as a tourist can be challenging at any time of year, but especially so at Christmas time. Which is why my top tip, weather permitting, is to walk everywhere!

London is a big city but all the key attractions are close to each other, and you can easily visit them on foot.

Especially at Christmas time walking around London is part of the experience, as you’ll be able to enjoy all the fabulous Christmas decorations.

If the weather is too bad for walking then stick to the tube or buses, public transport is really good and will get you everywhere you need to go.

Final thoughts on visiting London at Christmas

What are you favourite London Christmas activities? Let me know in the comments below!

There are a million things to do in London at Christmas time. Christmas markets, decorations, ice-skating rinks, festive menus and activities pop up all over the city.

There are obviously a lot more Christmassy things you can do beyond the ones I have listed here, but as a Londoner who has spent the past seven Decembers here, I can confidently say these are some of the best things to do in London at Christmas.

Visiting London in December – What to Expect

The weather in London in December is mild, but it’s also chilly and humid. Expect cold temperatures, rain every 3 days on average. The weather can also change very rapidly, but there are few extremes in the UK.

  • Average high: 9°C / 48°F
  • Average low: 5°C / 41°F
  • Average days of rain: 10

So what is London like in December, weather-wise? Depending on where you come from, you may well think of the UK as a country with a cold and wet climate. In fact the UK does have a humid climate, so it can rain quite a lot.

That’s the bad news. The good news, though, is that the British climate can also be described as temperate – meaning mild. There are generally no extremes here, and major storms are rare. You can expect to experience no earthquakes or wind events like hurricanes and tornadoes in London. Though flash flooding can happen every now and then.

When planning places to go in London in December, you can expect it to be cold and/or wet. So do pack warm and waterproof items: but more on that later. The other thing to know is that the UK has a maritime climate, which means that the weather can, and does, change very quickly!

Average temperatures are pretty mild – London is one of the UK’s warmest places. However frosty mornings are not uncommon in the city during December. There is some chance of snow – but generally this happens more during January and February. Rain is far more likely!

So don’t come to London expecting a White Christmas, as you’re fairly likely to be disappointed. January is the coldest month, and it doesn’t tend to snow in the UK more than just a few times per winter.

Daylight hours

The shortest days of the year take place during December. So the skies will only be bright between around 9 am and 3 pm to 4 pm. Sunrise is at about 8 am, and sunset takes place around 4.30 pm .

  • Sunrise: Between about 07:45 and 08:10
  • Sunset: Between about 16:30 and 16:40

When planning your trip to London in December, one thing worth knowing is how dark it will be. The UK experiences the winter solstice – or shortest day – a few days before Christmas.

So the sun sets long before 5pm in December. In reality, the skies start to darken from late afternoon, so expect fading light between 3pm and 4pm and total darkness by 5pm.

In the morning, the sun rises between about 7.45am and 8.15am. Again, it’s a gradual lightening of the sky rather than a sudden burst of bright sunlight. So before 9am in December, don’t expect full daylight.

What to pack

When packing for London in December, lots of layers, a wind and waterproof jacket, sturdy shoes or boots and a compact umbrella are essentials to take along with you.

When visiting London, England in December, expect anything from mild weather when a jumper and a light jacket will suffice to a full-on blizzard with snow and gale-force winds! That way, you’ll be prepared for anything.

Wet weather gear is very important if you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors – and many of the top London places to visit in December are outside.

That extends to footwear, so if you’re buying new trainers or walking boots for your London trip then go for waterproof ones if you can.

A waterproof jacket is also a necessity. Layering is also key. So ideally, something like a waterproof, windproof jacket with a removable fleece inner would be ideal.

If it does get warm – and in the city temperatures can rise fairly rapidly – you might want to remove layers, so think about a daypack that has space to carry extra clothing.

travel london christmas

Dressing in layers such as a t-shirt and a sweater, cardigan or hoodie plus a winter jacket should be just right for most days, and you can adjust the layers if required.

Jeans are an obvious choice for your bottom half, but remember that they can get sodden and take ages to dry if there’s heavy rain. So some sort of quick-drying active trousers are a better option.

Take a woolly hat, a warm, cosy scarf, a pair of thermal gloves and some insulating socks with you. Keeping your head, neck, hands and feet warm when it’s really cold can make all the difference to your comfort levels when it’s bitterly cold in London.

travel london christmas

A warm packable jacket, a lightweight and comfortable daypack and a compact travel umbrella are great items to have when you’re packing for a December trip to London. Don’t forget a hat, scarf, gloves and warm socks too.

Christmas in London is a real-life winter wonderland. I’ve never seen a city go as big for the festive holidays as London- yes, it even beats Christmas in New York City! London stores, residents and restaurants go over-the-top in holiday decor. It is truly a sight to see this historic city during the holiday season. If you’re looking for an incredible winter trip with plenty of Instagram photo ops, Christmas markets, cultural activities and landmarks, the best shopping and festive restaurants and bars, add London to your Christmas bucket list!

HOW MUCH TIME TO SPEND IN LONDON?

London is one of the largest cities in Europe and a cultural capital of the world, so there is a ton to do here! London is great for a stop for a few days along your Euro trip, but there is plenty to do here if you plan to spend a week here! I’ve been to London many times for a long weekend trip, so 3-4 days is definitely doable to see the most of the city.

During my Christmas trip, we spent 5 nights and 6 days in the city which was more than enough time to see all of the beautiful holiday decor and the main sightseeing. London puts up their holiday decorations in November, so a good time to visit is between mid-November and December!

Check out all of my recommendations below!

DECORATED BUILDINGS

London locals and businesses alike love to decorate their doorsteps with festive, over-the-top decor! I love walking around London during the holidays and admiring the creativity of these creations. I’ve gathered some of my favorites here to help you on your walking tour.

THE BOLTONS

The Boltons is a residential street in Chelsea with beautiful traditional homes. One home in particular always does Christmas big! You can find my favorite decorated home at 23 The Boltons. Remember: this is a residential street, so be respectful!

ANNABEL’S

The first photo that inspired me to travel to London during the holidays was the massive festive decoration display at Annabel’s in London. Annabel’s is a private, members-only club that truly outdoes themselves every year for the most outrageous decorations. Each year their display is different, so it’s always something new to discover. This gingerbread house facade was in 2021 and my personal favorite of theirs so far!

NEIL STRAIN FLORAL COUTURE

Neil Strain Floral Couture is another London establishment that changes up their holiday decor every year. Its a luxury flower shop located in the chic Belgravia neighborhood nearby Harrod’s and it’s definitely worth a stop for a photo-op!

SHOPPING AREAS

London is one of the major fashion capitals of the world, so the shopping here is AMAZING. I always come back with some new outfits! The shopping areas in London also get in the holiday spirit, so you can shop and feel like you’re in a winter wonderland.

OLD BOND ST

Old Bond Street is a luxury shopping area with some of the most fabulous Christmas decorations. I LOVE the iconic red telephone booth located next to the decorated Cartier and Ralph Lauren stores on this street.

Regent Street is another popular shopping area with all types of stores. The Christmas light displays on Regent street are truly one of the most beautiful I’ve seen! They’re on from early November until the New Year from 3pm to 11pm each day.

THE LANDMARKS

A trip to London is not complete without a visit to the city’s iconic landmarks. These spots are equally as stunning any time of year, so be sure to pay a visit during your Christmas trip!

TOWER BRIDGE

Tower Bridge is London’s insta-famous bridge (commonly confused with London Bridge). I loved visiting the historic Tower of London tour, then taking a walk across Tower Bridge for some cute photos and beautiful views of the city over the river.

THE LONDON EYE

The London Eye is a massive observation wheel with 360 degree views of London. I recommend a ride for the experience and the views, though it is a bit pricey at around $44 per person. If you’re looking for a cool instagram photo op with the London Eye , try out Victoria Embankment directly across from it.

THE CHRISTMAS MARKETS

If you’re searching for European Christmas markets, this city has a selection to choose from massive events to small markets in popular shopping areas. Christmas markets typically have a great selection of festive food and drinks, local gifts and lots of holiday decor!

COVENT GARDEN

The Covent Garden Christmas Market is my favorite in the city. For the month of December, Christmas market lights are live every day from 11 am – midnight and snow flurries occur every hour from midday until 9 pm. I loved visiting both during the day and at night to see the giant Christmas tree lit in all of its glory.

If you’re looking for Christmas Gifts, check out the cute Apple Market for local vendors or many of the name brand stores in the Covent Garden shopping area.

The market has stalls selling festive foods and igloos you can dine in! This year, there is also a vintage sleigh photo op and pop-up installations, so check out the website .

HYDE PARK WINTER WONDERLAND

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is the biggest and best Christmas market festival in London. It takes place from mid-November to the beginning of January every day from 10 am – 10 pm. There are tons of food and drink vendors, shows, ice castles and ice skating, fun festive rides, games, gifts, and Christmas lights! We had so much fun spending the evening here, trying out new foods, ice skating, riding rides and hanging out in the bar tents. Tickets are around $9 during peak hours and free otherwise!

LEADENHALL MARKET

If you’re familiar with the Harry Potter series, you will certainly recognize Leadenhall Market which was in a few scenes of the film. While not technically a Christmas market with market stalls, there are a variety of restaurants, bars and shops here to explore and the market gets all decorated for the holidays with a giant Christmas tree.

SOUTHBANK CENTER WINTER MARKET

The Southbank Center Winter Market is located nearby London Bridge and has a variety of drinks, street food and local gifts. This is a great stop if you’re checking out London or Tower Bridges.

I love a festive vibe during the Christmas season, so I’ve gathered a list of the best Christmas bars, restaurants and cafes for your visit.

THE IVY CHELSEA GARDEN

The Ivy has several locations across London, each of which are decorated differently, but my favorite decor is always at The Ivy Chelsea Garden . The Christmas decorations change up every year, so there is always a new display to snap a pic with (this one was in 2021). The food is modern British comfort classics, so make a reservation in advance to dine here as well!

DAPHNE’S

Daphne’s was my favorite restaurant our entire trip- I’m an Italian food-lover and absolutely adore the ornaments covering the ceiling of the greenhouse and bar area (this decor in the photo below was from 2021). The food is outstanding and the ambiance was even better! This is a special spot during Christmas, so make sure to reserve here in advance.

THE CHURCHILL ARMS

The Churchill Arms is a local pub and Thai restaurant nearby Notting Hill Gate. It is adorned with lit Christmas trees during the holiday season and gorgeous floral blooms in the spring/summer! This is a cool spot to grab drinks and eat some yummy Thai comfort food after you’ve had a few!

PEGGY PORSCHEN BELGRAVIA

Pink and Peggy Porschen go hand-in-hand. London’s most insta-famous pink café and bakery gets all dressed up for the holidays! They have locations in Belgravia and Chelsea, but their Belgravia location has my favorite decor. The decorations below are from 2021 and they change them up every year.

ALTO BY SAN CARLO

Another festive Italian favorite is rooftop restaurant, Alto by San Carlo which gets cozied up for the Christmas season. This restaurant is located on top of popular department store, Selfridge’s, and it has delicious Italian food and insta-worthy vibes. Be sure to reserve in advance for a table or you can opt for walk-in seating at the bar area. The decor below is from 2021 and changes every year.

Koyn is a Japanese restaurant in Mayfair that serves delicious sushi and Japanese Izakaya dishes. During the holidays, the exterior is dressed up with cute decor and a vintage branded car!

Dining in an igloo was a major bucket-list check for me! The igloos with the best views of the city are at Coppa Club where you can see Tower Bridge and The Shard. Igloos have a minimum spend and need to be reserved in advance, but it’s absolutely worth the experience.

I am adding this restaurant to the list, though I have a disclaimer that I was sadly disappointed by dining here. The food and service are excellent at 34 Mayfair , but I was anticipating a restaurant draped in thousands of colorful ornaments hanging from the ceiling and there were zero. I did enjoy the food, but if you are expecting over-the-top Christmas decor, the inside is rather plain now.

Hotel Description

Each year, The Connaught puts up an artist-designed Christmas tree outside its doors on Mayfair’s Mount Street, signaling the arrival of the holiday season. Inside, the luxury property goes all-in with its decor and festivities, including Christmas carols and themed menus at one of the hotel’s four restaurants. Don’t miss the martini trolley in the Connaught Bar , and be sure to book a table for a whimsical afternoon tea at Jean-Georges . If you happen to be there on Christmas Day, a horse-drawn carriage ride awaits.

This grand luxury property is a hop away from Oxford Street shopping and has one of the best cocktail bars in town.

Spa, indoor pool, gym, children’s program

Each year, The Langham, which sits just north of Oxford Street, goes full holiday glitz and glam. Enjoy a festive afternoon tea in Palm Court , one of the hotel's restaurants, or grab a table at Artesia, an award-winning bar with both classic and custom cocktails. For 2022, the hotel’s Christmas theme is The Langham Musical Christmas, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Music, with special events and activities through New Year’s Eve.

This old-school London hotel, which holds a Royal Warrant of Appointment, embraces tradition in a memorable way.

Fitness room, complimentary shoeshine, children’s amenities

No one does English luxury like The Goring, and the royal family's favorite hotel doesn't hold back at Christmastime. Located in Belgravia, near Buckingham Palace, the hotel becomes the epitome of elegance around the holidays. Enjoy a joyful meal in The Dining Room , and don’t skimp on the famed Goring Christmas pudding. For a different sort of treat, the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is a short walk away through St. James Park.

This stately hotel is adjacent to Mayfair and Green Park and features stylish rooms perfect for a Christmas celebration.

Nespresso machine, gym, 17th-century wine cellar

London crowds during the Christmas season are notorious, but The Stafford — set in St. James’s just off Green Park — is the perfect holiday haven. The hotel greets guests with lights, multiple Christmas trees, and room after room of seasonal decor. Whether you're cozying up in The American Bar, mulled wine in hand, or indulging in a delicious meal at The Game Bird , a stay at The Stafford will leave you feeling exactly how you should during the holiday season: warm and merry.

As any visitor will tell you, exploring London will take you ages. A weekend trip is barely enough time to see all of the main sights. If you stay somewhere in the heart of things (in this case, right next to Buckingham Palace) you'll be able to soak up more of what the "Big Smoke" has to offer. The Rubens at the Palace is old school — think deep hues, velvets, and a penchant for British heritage — and, as any guest will tell you, the property's dining experiences will get anyone in the Christmas spirit. You can't visit the United Kingdom without enjoying an afternoon tea, so you'll have to save room for The Rubens' "Winter Wonderland" Afternoon Tea. The 90-minute experience includes bottomless mulled wine, speculoos fruit scones, and pastries aptly named Santa's Log and Rudolph's Cupcake.

Known as one of London’s best luxury hotels, this historic property comes with high-end amenities and unparalleled park views.

Babysitting and pet-sitting services, in-house tailor, chauffeur-driven luxury cars

Expect nothing less than sheer glamor at The Dorchester at Christmastime. The hotel has ornate decor and a strong sense of tradition. Dressing up is a must, as is ordering from the seasonal menus at The Grill and Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester. Indulge in afternoon tea or take a festive master class, which encourages guests to make their own mulled wine and Christmas pudding. Additionally, The Dorchester is only steps from Hyde Park, where you can experience the Winter Wonderland festivities.

One the city’s most majestic and historic hotels offers a prime location for the holiday season.

Penhaligon’s toiletries, 24-hour gym, indoor pool, chauffeur-driven luxury cars

The Savoy, which has overlooked the Thames for more than 130 years, is one of London’s most historic hotels, meaning that the luxury property takes the holiday tradition very seriously. Expect elegant decor throughout the lobby and grandiose Thames Foyer, where the hotel offers a seasonal version of its high-end afternoon tea service. Enjoy a festive cocktail at the American Bar or dinner in the Thames Foyer , which serves up a special menu for the holidays on select evenings. The hotel’s location, adjacent to Covent Garden, means easy access to one of the city’s most festive neighborhoods.

Claridge's Hotel

This chic Mayfair property is known for its annual Christmas tree and its high-end service.

Bose Bluetooth portable speakers, spa, chauffeur-driven luxury cars

Claridge's has been around since the 1850s, maintaining its status as an icon and a must-visit, especially during the holidays. The hotel displays the Claridge's tree, designed each year by a different artist. To get the full Claridge’s Christmas experience, you'll want to book afternoon tea or an overnight stay on Christmas Eve itself, which includes a visit from Santa. The hotel’s Mayfair location, a quick walk to Regent Street and Oxford Circus, ensures Christmas lights and shopping galore.

The central location and prestigious address make for a stylish and convenient stay around the holidays.

Complimentary minibar, gym, Noble Isle toiletries

Located across from Green Park, in the southern part of Mayfair, The Mayfair Townhouse makes an ideal home base for exploring London at Christmas. The rooms are modern with great amenities and large TVs, and the breakfast service is a nice touch. During the holiday season, expect a cozy, festive atmosphere and easy access to nearby shopping spots. While the hotel doesn’t serve afternoon tea, its sister property, 11 Cadogan Gardens, offers a delightfully classic service that’s worth a trip.

Immerse yourself in Covent Garden at this hip, modern hotel, which is a favorite of the entertainment industry.

Gym, screening room, RikRak by Kit Kemp toiletries, children’s amenities, treatment rooms

Covent Garden is perhaps London’s best neighborhood during Christmastime, with twinkling lights, its own tree, and shopping as far as the eye can see. Grab a room at the Covent Garden Hotel to make the most of the area’s holiday cheer. Dine at Brasserie Max or indulge in afternoon tea before heading out to explore. The chic hotel is also notably family friendly, perfect for travelers with little ones.

This hotel pairs a prime location with a relaxed atmosphere and London’s best spa.

ESPA Life spa with indoor pool, 24-hour gym, business center

Unwind at Corinthia London, a luxury property just steps away from the Thames. The hotel goes all out at Christmas with festive menus in all the restaurants and a memorable themed afternoon tea, served in the dramatic Crystal Moon Lounge from November through January. The location, near Covent Garden and Piccadilly Circus, is perfect for holiday shopping, but the hotel’s unparalleled spa might keep you indoors.

This Hyde Park-adjacent luxury hotel pulls out all the stops for the holidays and has a prime location for gift shopping.

Diptyque toiletries, indoor swimming pool, spa, gym, pillow menu

The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London, an elegant, well-appointed property, goes big at Christmastime and puts you in a perfect location for the holiday. It offers easy access to shopping at Harrods and in Knightsbridge, should you need to buy gifts for family and friends, and it’s right across the street from the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland celebrations. When you’re back at the hotel, warm up in the spa, or go for afternoon tea in The Rosebery. For an extra-special treat, reserve a table at the two-Michelin-starred restaurant Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, which features clever dishes based on the history of gastronomy.

This discreet boutique hotel feels like a hidden hideaway amid bustling central London.

Butler service, private members’ club, complimentary gym passes

The Twenty Two, a new secret on Grosvenor Square, is equal parts members club and hotel, with a creative vibe that will suit travelers looking for something special over the holiday season. Grab a hearty bite to eat at The Restaurant at the Twenty Two, which serves Mediterranean-inspired British cuisine, or sip a festive cocktail in the members club bar. The hotel’s location in the heart of Mayfair puts you within walking distance of the city’s best shopping, as well as the lights of Bond Street and Oxford Circus.

London has several amazing Christmas hotels, all of which embrace the cheer and joy of the season. For a particularly festive stay, book into our top pick, The Connaught, to make this your best Christmas ever. The Goring also ensures guests will have a delightful holiday visit. For something more boutique — but no less magical — the Covent Garden Hotel boasts the city’s best address for Christmas shopping and West End shows. For those who want to really splurge, The Savoy makes for a memorable stay that marries history with high-end luxury.

  • Each London neighborhood has its own Christmas lights display, so be sure to explore beyond your immediate environs. Look for the best lights on New Bond Street, Regent Street, Oxford Street, Carnaby Street, Marylebone High Street, and around Covent Garden and Seven Dials.
  • London has several outdoor ice-skating rinks during the holidays, including at Somerset House and the Queen's House in Greenwich. Don’t miss the new rink outside Battersea Power Station.
  • Winter in London can be chilly and unpredictable, with the possibility of rain or even snow. It’s best to pack accordingly and to bring along lots of layers, especially if you’re going to spend time outside. Find more planning tips in our London Travel Guide .

We evaluated around 20 hotels in London before choosing the best for Christmastime. We considered various elements, including the property’s reputation and quality of service, its location within the city, and notable amenities like restaurants, bars, and spas. We also specifically considered each hotel’s Christmas offerings and what kinds of experiences are available to guests around the holidays. In determining this list, we drew on personal experience, recent accolades, and independent guest reviews.

London at Christmas Time

London For Christmas St Paul's

You asked for tips on what to do in London at Christmas time, so I did a bit of hunting around to see what I could find. This year is going to be different, so I’ve tried to find out what’s open, what’s closed in London for this Christmas 2024. I’ve spent 8 Christmases in London as a resident and when we lived in Wales I’d come to London most years to see the lights, do some shopping, maybe take in a show. I’m sure we can help you plan on a wonderful few days, a special outing, or a weekend in London over Christmas.

London at Christmas Festivities London

London is always fun at any time of year but at Christmas, she has extra magic.

The darkness of the late afternoons helps make the lights and decorations all the more spectacular as you munch on your roasted chestnuts and sip a mulled wine.

London at Christmas lights treee

So if you’re thinking of visiting London this Christmas, we have some up-to-date tips and recommendations for you.

Some dates are not yet out and many events were cancelled last year, we’re adding confirmed dates as fast as we can.

London Christmas

A lot of London’s Christmas events, including the ice rinks, are hugely popular so pre-booking may be the best idea in 2024. It’s busy in London at Christmas time, particularly in the last weeks before Christmas as the shopping crowds come to buy their holiday gifts. You must be ready for crowds.

Everything is subject to change of course, but the UK and London have been open quite a while now and fingers crossed everything will stay stable.

But double-check everything we mention here! We give you links where we can.

London at Christmas

London at Christmas Time

We update this post every year to give you dates, timings, train closures, and special events. We’re adding 2024 information as soon as we can find it.

The Holiday Season is in swing in London from about October / November.

If a Christmas event is not in the post yet it’s most likely that dates have not yet been released or our information from last year is still displaying to give you an idea.

Our favourite Christmas Market and Food Fair is held on the South Bank, last year it ran from the 3rd of November to Boxing Day, the 26th November. This is part of the Winter Festival events in London, but you will find more Christmas Markets around the city. Covent Garden is particularly good for Christmas.

London Attractions You Can Book This Christmas

The attractions below could be perfect for your Christmas outing or special treat. London Zoo is normally open over Christmas but booking are required, see here for details .

Some museums, for instance, the Natural History Museum, were accepting bookings for their special exhibitions. Titanosaur, Life of The Biggest Dinosaur, was their special exhibition, non-members have to pay, and that ran into January 2024. Book here for current special events.

London ice rinks at Christmas

If you are visiting the Natural History Museum during the Christmas holidays, book a time slot. It’s the only way, now, to guarantee you will get in. Regular museum bookings (free) can be made here. The museum website stated that they will be closed from the 24th to the 26th of December last year. Opening time is 10 am, last admission, 5.30 pm.

Christmas at Kew ran last year at Kew Botanic Gardens near Richmond to January 7th 2024, book here. There’s quite a lot of walking at Kew, but the festive light show is great.

London Harry Potter at Christmas

Hogwarts is the Snow is a special event at the Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio Tours. You always have to book a time slot to go here, it’s the best Harry Potter experience in the world , and its very much worth going. The Christmas event is normally open until the 14 th of January, search here for admission.

The Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is on most years, but this one is closes on January 1st normally. so be quick! Check for tickets here.

Christmas lights tours are always very popular in London at Christmas (rightly so), book a vintage open top bus tour here , or the kids’ tour, Tootbus, here.

London at Christmas Theatre

What’s on at the theatres this year in London? Last year The Nutcracker (London National Ballet) was on at the London Coliseum to the 7th of January 2024 and Elf the Musical is at the Dominion Theatre to January 6th 2024.

If you want to see a traditional British pantomime, The London Palladium has a panto of huge stars. Peter Pan was on for Christmas 2023 featuring Julian Clary and Jennifer Saunders – amongst others! These traditional British pantos usually run until the second week in January.

That’s just a quick overview of some of the most popular things to do over Christmas and into the New Year, Let’s look into things in more detail!

Christmas Lights and Decorations in London

London Christmas Lights Covent Garden

London is all lit up like the proverbial Christmas tree early, you’ll see lights on almost every street in the city.

The lights are normally switched on in the first week of November.

See dates for Londons Christmas Light Switch On Events  here. In 2024 the Oxford St. Christmas Lights will start Christmas in November (date not yet confirmed).

Our favourite spots for amazing festive lights and decorations are:

  • Covent Garden (pictured above)

Probably the best way to see the lights this year, and avoid the crowds, would be to book this open-top Christmas lights bus tour. If I were there that would be top of my wish list for next Christmas.

If you’re visiting London with small kids at Xmas, Tootbus have a Christmas lights tour by bus aimed at younger passengers.

London’s Christmas Shop Windows

Stores in London really pull out the big guns at Christmas, you’re in for a treat of window dressing art:

  • John Lewis on Oxford St.
  • Fortnum and Mason in Picadilly
  • Harrods in Knightsbridge
  • Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge
  • Selfridges on Oxford St.
  • Dolce and Gabbana on Bond St
  • Tiffany Old Bond St.
  • Hamleys on Regent St.
  • Liberty Regent St.

London Christmas Trees

 Christmas tree London

The most famous tree in the world, the Trafalgar Square tree will be lit on ( unconfirmed as yet ) December.

The tree is an annual gift from Norway to the UK in gratitude for its assistance in WW2.

Covent Garden usually boasts a large and impressive Christmas tree too (pictured above)

London Outdoor Ice Rinks at Christmas

 Christmas ice rink London

London’s ice rinks are a very special part of Christmas in the UK, and you have plenty of choices.

Hampton Court Palace and The Queen’s House ice rink in Greenwich were reportedly open. Please check, things are changing constantly.

  • Canary Wharf Ice Rink
  • Eyeskate at the London Eye.
  • Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink
  • Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
  • Natural History Museum (above)
  • Somerset House
  • The Queen’s House at Greenwich

London Christmas Markets and Fairs

 Christmas Market London

There are usually one day Christmas Markets and events all over the city, but the biggest and longest-running attractions are below.

Borough Market will most likely be open, along with Selfridges Christmas Market, Pexmas in Peckham, and Festive Flea at Vinegar Yard.

  • Hyde Park Winter Wonderland usually runs for 6 weeks from November to January .
  • Southbank Centre Winter Festival is Usually operational November to January .
  • Covent Garden Market runs all year round, but it’s extra special at Christmas.
  • Christmas by The River at London Bridge has outstanding views and over 100 wooden stalls.
  • Leicester Square has had a small market, a carousel and a scary-looking ride.
  • Outside the Tate Modern there was a large market, lots of food, alcoholic winter drinks and crafts.

 Christmas food fair London

Special Christmas Events in London

  • Christmas at Kew, an after-dark experience of magical lights at the famous Kew Botanical Gardens.  There is something happening at Kew this Christmas but you’ll need to check their website for details.
  • Winter Wonderland Hyde Park, has it all, ice rink, big wheel, food stalls and a circus. This event runs for weeks and is absolutely huge.

More Christmas Activities in London

If you’d like to book a tour of the most Christmasy sites in London, you can do that. Walking tours and guided tours by taxi, open top bus, and more, are available. There are also special Christmas cruises and dining. Use the button below.

Of course, most of London’s attractions and places of interest will be open around Christmas time. As Christmas is very busy for Londoners, British visitors, and international tourists, we strongly recommend you book and reserve your spot at your must-see London attractions. For instance, you can book the following.

  • Book admission for The Tower of London and to see The Crown Jewels (highly recommended!)
  • Place a reservation for fast track access at The London Eye (it will be too cold to stand in line for hours!)
  • Book a day trip from London to Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor (wrap up warm!)
  • Reserve a time slot for the Warner Bros Harry Potter Studios Tour (this does sell out and it’s incredible!)
  • Remember that very little will be open in London on Christmas Day, so we’d recommend booking a hotel with Christmas Lunch or Dinner included. Such as The Lanesborough, which offers a phenomenal Christmas package. It’s Christmas, spoil yourself!

Christmas Day in London

Christmas Day is the quietest day of the year in London, take the opportunity to walk in the parks and see the Christmas windows and lights.

There’s something special about being in London at Christmas time but Christmas day itself in the city is a unique experience.

Very few places will be open in London on Christmas Day.

The annual Christmas day Serpentine swim in Hyde Park is worth a watch if you’re out and about at 9am.

Will The Museums Be Open on Christmas Day?

No, most, if not all museums in London will be closed on Christmas Day this year.

According to their websites the Natural History Museum will not be open on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.

The British Museum has no tickets available over the Christmas period, 24th, 25th and 26th of December. ( confirm here) . London’s Science Museum, check if they’re open at Christmas here.

London has dozens of museums, some may be open on Christmas Day, but the main museums close for the holidays.

Where Can You Eat in London on Christmas Day?

Some hotels and pubs will be serving food on Christmas Day.

The Lamb and Flag in Covent Garden, The Sanctuary House Hotel in Westminster, The Ship in Southwark, The Swan in Hyde Park and The Star Tavern in Belgravia are currently listed as open for Christmas.

But obviously, please check.

Most British pubs will be open and very busy on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

Hopefully, you can find a cosy family-friendly pub to enjoy some good British pub food over the Christmas period.

London Public Transport at Christmas

Getting around London is tricky over Christmas, London’s public transport system is excellent, cheap and efficient, but Christmas is the worst time to experience it.

The huge crowds of shoppers make life very difficult for most of the Christmas school holiday period and every weekend.

On top of the crowds, there are also closures.

Remember there is usually no tube, overground or bus service on Christmas Day in central London and reduced service over the holiday period.

Check with Transport for London for latest details .

How Do British People Celebrate Christmas?

Well, obviously, it varies between families, but if you’re visiting London from abroad you might be interested, so I’ll tell you.

In my family, it was traditional to open our Christmas presents from under the tree and Christmas stockings stuffed by Santa (Who we usually called Father Christmas) very early on Christmas morning.

The rest of Christmas Day was either spent at home, cooking and eating a huge Christmas lunch, yes, we eat our turkey at lunchtime, not dinner time, or at a relative’s home.

British people tend to call lunch dinner if it’s a large roast.

We never watched the Queen’s speech, some do, we didn’t, although I’m very fond of our monarch.

Christmas lunch would be roast turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon) roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, gravy, bread sauce, lots of vegetables.

The vegetables served should always include roast parsnips and sprouts.

A flaming Christmas pudding with cream (I don’t like brandy butter) would follow.

In the evening we’d normally eat turkey sandwiches, cheese (stilton), trifle and snack foods. Wine, port, and sherry would flow freely.

Relatives would come to our house for lunch or we would go to their homes.

It was a family time and we didn’t venture out much other than for a crisp afternoon walk maybe.

So as the British population tucks into their lunch and enjoys their presents, expect the streets of London to be the quietest they will ever be on Christmas Day. But Christmas Eve is another story, we’ll normally be out in force drinking and merrymaking, expect huge numbers.

What Time is The King’s Speech?

The King’s Speech or Christmas Message is normally aired at 3pm on Christmas Day.

Booking a Transfer from Heathrow into London on Christmas Day or Over the Christmas Period.

Several people have asked me about this now. The best I can do is send you here (opens in new tab). There are cars to pre-book your airport transfer and also bookings available for the Heathrow Express, but check dates and availability (see below).

Taxis can be very expensive in the UK so be cautious and look out for extra charges at Christmas time.

The Heathrow Express website here (opens in new tab), states that there will be maintenance work this Christmas and closures, check this for your dates.

We’ll add more Christmas information for London just as soon as it becomes available. For more on visiting London head to our main London Travel home page. We hope you enjoy visiting London, our favourite city, this Christmas

Absolutely loved your blog on Christmas in London! 🎄 Such helpful tips for making the most of the festive season. I recently stayed at Holiday Rental Apartments near Earls Court tube station ( https://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/presidential-kensington ). The central location made exploring a breeze, and the services were spot-on. Highly recommend for anyone planning a London getaway!

BTW, the queen died…

Did she? Oh no.

Wonderful windows, marvellous markets & twinkling trimmings. We totally love how London goes to town for the festive season! With so many options for things to do at Christmas in London, it can be hard to choose. Still, variety is the spice of life and with so much choice, there’s something for everyone.

Thank you for this helpful content. We are visiting London for a few days in advance of Christmas and have looked into booking a bus tour to see the lights. The one that we are most interested in only has spaces available at 15:00. This may seem like a silly question, but will it be dark enough then to appreciate the lights? (We are coming from a lower latitude :))

It won’t be completely dark but it’s likely to be getting there. By 4pm I’d say yes. Sunset in London at Christmas is 3.56 pm. And boy do I miss it! It doesn’t feel like Christmas without dark and sparkling lights. Enjoy!

Hey I planned a trip to london from 11.11-14.11.2022 wanted to see a christmas decoration etc but it officialy starts from 18th? Or is it chance to see it at that time? Thanks a lot M.

I’ve read that the Oxford St. lights are being switched on on the 22nd Nov this year, and they’re usually the first. There will be Christmas stuff in the shops (it’s starting to appear already) then the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park is starting on 18th Nov this year, I believe. The dates are just starting to be confirmed for Christmas 2022, this post will be updated once they’re available.

I can’t believe I have never been to London. It’s a must. And especially after your post 🙂

Yes you must! This Christmas it should be open 🙂

Thank you Allyson, Ive been to London many years ago, and not over Christmas. My siblings, our spouses and I are visiting London, and hopefully Scotland over Christmas break from California.

This has loads of interesting information, I look forward to you updating this list for 2022

Thanks for an inspiring blog post – we visited London December 2019 and used your post as an inspiration. Thanks!

We also blog about our small adventures in Denmark, and find inspiration from other bloggers.

Hello! We are thinking of visiting London for a 20 year anniversary family trip. I know the ground transportation is all but closed on Christmas Day, but what about Christmas Eve. It was be nice to get there around the 18th and fly back on the 24th before all of the closures. Thanks!

You’d have to check with transport for London, but their Christmas schedule for 2019 won’t be announced yet. Last year there were closures on the rail line in from Heathrow over Christmas. Did you mean that or buses and underground actually inside London?

Great post, Alyson! London can be truly magical at Christmas time but it is also very busy so it’s good to be prepared for everything and make a plan of action. There are some really great Christmas markets dotted around London – both for food and for general shopping. And it’s a great idea to check out one of the outdoor ice rinks – perfect for students, families and everyone really.

Will be arriving in London on Christmas Day. Do you know if I could arrange transportation from Heathrow to hotel ahead of time since public transportation is not available? Any suggestions on restaurants would be greatly appreciated. I will be traveling with 2 teenage boys and my husband.

Can you check with your hotel to see if they offer that service Maria? Failing that, you’d probably need to pre-book a car service online and importantly…agree a price. You don’t want to turn up and find the taxi drivers wanting to charge you triple time because it’s Christmas. I’ve added a link towards the bottom of the post that gives you a selection of transportation options from Heathrow into Central London. These can be booked in advance and could save you a headache. But it looks to me as if the Heathrow Express is not running Christmas Day due to maintenance. I’ve included a link to the Heathrow Express website above too. You can double check.

HI, Ill be in London for Christmas and i would like to go for a traditional lunch in a pub or restaurant without spending a fortune. Most ive seen are 100 Pounds and over. 1st i dont want a 5 courses menu, just just basic, and second im not spending that much for kids.. Any suggestions? Thanks

No, sorry, Christmas day will always be massively expensive because the staff are paid so much more to be away from their own families. It’s not something we’ve ever done, although my husband is a Chef, in London we’ve always been home Christmas day. Most places will be closed.

Thank you so much for these informations. We’ll be in London before Christmas to see the lights and a bit of shopping. I’ll keep an eye on your site for updates.

Traveling on Christmas Day London, the web site you link to has not been updated since 2013 ??

We’ll be in London Dec 20 – 29 2018 and was researching the city and things to do, found your web site.

How do I get current information on tourist issued around Christmas?

Thank you Now retired first visit to London

Hmmm… not sure. Will have a look at that link for you…. very little information available yet for Christmas 2018 and New Year 2018 -2019. Transport for London has not announced anything as yet, which I’m not surprised by as it’s only June. Will be updating as soon as details are released.

I love London at Christmas time and am so happy to be living here!
