Visit the Best Christmas Markets (Julemarkeder) in Copenhagen

The best Christmas markets (Julemarkeder) in Copenhagen complement the beautifully decorated shop windows in Denmark during the hygge advent period. In 2023, many markets will open in early November.

Julemarked on Højbro Plads The best Christmas markets (Julemarkeder) in Copenhagen complement the beautifully decorated shop windows in Denmark during the hygge advent period.

The Julemarked on Højbro Plads is Copenhagen’s best Christmas market to visit but the Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market at Nytorv and the Julemarked Kongens Nytorv are fun too. The Christmas market at Nyhavn has the most typical Copenhagen backdrop while the market in Christiana is as unique as this alternative living free town. The Christmas decorations at Tivoli are a class act, as are many shop windows in Copenhagen.

The large Christmas markets in Copenhagen are generally open daily from around 11:00 to 19:00 – often a bit later on weekends. Most markets open early to mid-November and end a few days before Christmas.

Julemarked on Højbro Plads – Copenhagen’s Best Christmas Market

Sausages in Copenhagen at the Christmas markets are mostly grilled by Germans

The best Christmas market in Copenhagen is the Julemarked on Højbro Plads in the heart of the old town.

It is often also referred to as the international Christmas market as it follows the typical German Weihnachtsmarkt concept. The log cabins are imported from Tyrol and many stallholders come from Germany so expect the typical good sausages, German-style Glühwein, waffles, pancakes, and sweets.

The Christmas market is very conveniently located on Højbro Plads between the Strøget pedestrian street and the Christiansborg Palace (parliamentary complex with a free viewing platform from Copenhagen’s tallest tower).

In 2023, the Julemarked Højbro Plads operates from 3 November to 21 December. It is open daily from 11:00 closing at 19:00 on Sunday to Wednesday and 21:00 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market at Nytorv

Copenhagen Christmas Market Sweets

The Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market is on Nytorv square just off the Strøget pedestrian street near the Vor Frue Domkirke (cathedral). It follows the typical Julemarked pattern of stalls selling a variety of food and trinkets.

The Nytorv square is around halfway between Copenhagen’s town hall square, which has a large Christmas tree but no market, and the Højbro Square.

In 2023, the Hans Christian Andersen Julemarked is open daily from 11:00 to 19:00 (20:00 on Friday and Saturday & 18:00 on Sunday) from 17 November to 21 December 2023.

Julemarked Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen

Hotel D’Angleterre in Copenhagen

The Julemarked Kongens Nytorv is one of the largest in Copenhagen and again expanding with Kongens Nytorv square finally completely cleared from the metro construction equipment that covered much of the large square for years.

In addition to the typical stalls, this market is enhanced by the beautiful decorations on the facades of the grand Hotel D’Angleterre and Magasin department store.

In 2023, the Julemarked Kongens Nytorv is open from 3 November to 21 December 2023. It is open daily from 11:00 closing at 19:00 on Monday to Wednesday, 20:00 on Thursday, 21:00 on Friday and Saturday, and 19:00 on Sunday.

Christmas Market at Nyhavn

Nyhavn Christmas Markets in Copenhagen

Nyhavn with its colorful quayside buildings is the classical Copenhagen tourist postcard motive. This area with its endless open-air restaurants, cafés, and bars is always lively but during much of November and December typical Christmas market outdoor stalls add further attractions to the area.

Nyhavn has the best background but the Julemarked here somewhat lacks the charm and cozy atmosphere of other Christmas markets in Copenhagen. Nyhavn somewhat makes up for it by opening earlier than the others.

In 2023, the Christmas market at Nyhavn will be open from 3 November to 21 December, daily from 10:00 to 19:00, 20:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Christmas in Tivoli Gardens Funfair Park

Tivoli Main Entrance at Christmas

The Tivoli Gardens funfair park is hugely popular with visitors to Copenhagen and locals alike.

During advent, Tivoli is open for its short Christmas period season and beautifully decorated with special winter and Christmas themes. The park is particularly atmospheric late afternoon, early evening when the lights come on.

Tivoli is not only popular for its funfair rides but also for several good restaurants and shopping opportunities.

God Jul Men

The Christmas season at Tivoli is generally from around 20 November to 31 December. Opening hours are from 11 to 23:00 (midnight on Friday and Saturday).

Tivoli is actually open on Christmas Day but closes at 16:00 on Christmas Eve (24 December).

Buy Tivoli tickets online in advance: basic admission is around DKK150 ( rides extra — around DKK250). Basic admission is covered by the Copenhagen Card .

In 2023, Tivoli Gardens’ Christmas season runs from 19 November to 31 December 2023.

Christmas Market in Freetown Christiana

Freetown Christiana is famous as the alternative hippie lifestyle community in Copenhagen. The area is hugely popular with foreign visitors but many locals only visit during the Christmas season. (The fairly open drug selling in Pusher Street continues despite sporadic action by the police.)

Christiana has a famous Christmas Market held indoors in The Grey Hall. Many small stalls here sell mostly handmade artwork but somewhat disappointingly, most of the sellers seem to be non-locals.

The Christiana Julemarket in Den Grå Hal is mostly open for ten days in mid-December. This Christmas market gets very busy, especially on weekends.

In 2023, the Christiana Christmas Market is open from 8 to 20 December 2023, daily from noon to 20:00.

Royal Copenhagen Christmas Table

Royal Copenhagen Flagship Store

The Royal Copenhagen Christmas Table is a popular Copenhagen tradition. Since 1963, the flagship store of Royal Copenhagen on Strøget has invited different artists and celebrities to create six Christmas table settings. These do not necessarily show typical Danish Christmas celebrations but rather the invited artists’ interpretation of a perfect Christmas, of course using ample of the store’s huge porcelain and figurine collections.

The exhibition is on the upper floors of the Royal Copenhagen flagship store at Amagertorv 6 – within visual sight of the wonderful Christmas market on Højbroplads. For savings and bargains visit the Royal Copenhagen Factory Outlet Store in Frederiksberg.

If there’s one thing that can generate yuletide spirit amidst Denmark’s cold, wind-swept mid-December conditions, it’s a Christmas market. Pairing abundant gift options with the pungent aromas of cinnamon-infused mulled wine , visitors have the prospect of sourcing stocking-fillers while imbibing a glass (or three) of hot liquor along the way.

Copenhagen has plenty of these festive events scheduled in the weeks running up to the 25th for those in need of early inspiration or a last minute purchase. For the latest events in copenhagen during November and December, check out our monthly event calendar . A Festive Guide to the Best Christmas Markets in Copenhagen, Denmark

When Christmas arrives in Copenhagen, the city becomes a winter wonderland bursting with Nordic traditions and many Christmas markets.

It’s an accessible city to walk around, and you can combine visiting the Copenhagen Christmas markets with exploring some of Copenhagen’s best landmarks.

I had already visited several top Christmas markets in Germany and Belgium. Still, I had not been to one in Scandinavia, so I looked forward to wandering around the traditional Danish Christmas markets.

Hygge, the Scandinavian feeling of being comfy and cosy, is something I was familiar with, and I knew I would find it here by the bucket load at the Copenhagen Christmas markets.

And I couldn’t wait to stock up on unique Scandi Christmas presents for family and friends that weren’t from IKEA!

Helpful Information About Copenhagen Christmas Markets in December

All copenhagen christmas market dates have been updated for 2023, how to get around copenhagen.

Our flight to Denmark was under two hours from the UK with Easyjet , making it a perfect destination for a short break at Christmas.

We bought a single-use train ticket at Copenhagen Airport that took us straight to Copenhagen Central Station.

Purchasing a ticket was slightly confusing; however, plenty of attendants helped us navigate the system.

Welcome Pickups is a reliable company if you prefer a pre-organised private airport transfer.

Where to Stay in Copenhagen

There are several districts in Copenhagen, and they all offer a different experience for the traveller.

We stayed in the Vesterbro area, also known as the meatpacking district, within walking distance of Copenhagen’s Central Station.

The transformation from empty warehouses to the arrival of hip and trendy restaurants and bars has given this area a new lease of life.

Hotels have also moved in, offering cosy “hygge” stays in contemporary settings.

Vesterbro – is the best place to stay for a trendy vibe.

Norrebro – is the best place to stay for tourists.

Latin Quarter – the best area to stay in Copenhagen on a budget.

Our Hotel in Copenhagen

We stayed at the Scandic Kodbyn , which is in the meatpacking district.

Our room had an urban-industrial style with exposed concrete brickwork and minimal accessories. The hotel has a steak restaurant on site, a nod to the area’s history.

Experience the floating Santa Lucia parade in Copenhagen’s canals.

If you are in Copenhagen on 13 December 2023, you can experience an alternative take on the traditional Danish Santa Lucia parade.

Kayaks sail along the Nyhavn canal dressed in lights and Christmas decorations. It is quite a sight to see and will get you in the festive spirit.

Saint Lucia, or Lucy, was a 3rd-century Christian martyr from Italy whose name means light. She is often represented wearing a wreath of lit candles on her head.

Danish Weather and What to Wear at the Christmas Markets

Weather in Europe at this time of year is unpredictable.

We arrived in mid-December, and snow fell heavily on our last day in Copenhagen. I must say it certainly set the scene for a white Christmas.

Dress in layers as temperatures are cold in the day and dip even lower while walking around at night (let’s say I needed a lot of glogg to warm up!).

Find Out What to Pack for a City Break in Europe

What to expect at a copenhagen christmas market.

Our two-hour afternoon flight from the UK meant we arrived just before the city started to go dark, which is when the magic of Christmas comes alive in Copenhagen.

We started our weekend in Copenhagen with a glass of Glogg in a cute Copenhagen cafe.

It’s a hot alcoholic drink from red wine mixed with various spices and fruit and is something Christmassy to try in Copenhagen.

Then, equipped with our numerous layers of warm clothing, we set off into the evening to explore how the Danish ‘do’ Christmas!

Exploring the Tivoli Gardens and Christmas Markets

The Tivoli Gardens are the jewel in Copenhagen’s crown and one of the city’s favourite attractions since 1843.

Tivoli gardens decorated for Christmas in Copenhagen

They are transformed into the most magical setting you could imagine at Christmas.

Over 70,000 fairy lights illuminate the wooden chalets, Christmas trees and fairground rides, and we were excited to experience its charm for ourselves.

Green wooden hut decorated with christmas lights at Tivoli Gardens

As soon as we walked through the gates, we felt like children again. Traditional wooden cabins had been transformed into brightly coloured shops filled with sweets and decorations.

Twinkling lights led us down winding paths past Christmas trees, and amusement rides and music floated through the night air.

A trip to Tivoli at Christmas was everything I had imagined and more, and a break to Copenhagen wouldn’t be complete without a visit there.

How to See Tivoli Gardens at Christmas

Christmas at Tivoli 2023 runs from 17th November to 31st December.

It opens from 11 am to 11 pm Sunday – Thursday and 11 am – Midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Copenhagen has short days, with nightfall descending around 4 p.m. I would recommend a visit once it goes dark to experience Tivoli at its best.

The Nyhavn Christmas Market, situated by the picturesque Nyhavn harbour, is the perfect place to absorb the Christmas atmosphere.

Lights and festive garlands decorate the chalets and restaurants, and the scent of Christmas cooking guides you to the food stalls.

Just remember that eating in Nyhavn is one of the most expensive places in Copenhagen.

Scandinavian gifts of hats, scarves, mittens, tree decorations and candles can be bought for presents or just because you love them yourself.

From Nyhavn, you can catch a boat that will take you to cruise on the waterways for an hour. We didn’t fancy doing this ourselves as it was so cold, but you can book a Nyhavn cruise if you feel braver than us.

The stalls are named after Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales and are decorated with hundreds of Christmas lights.

Julemarked Hojbro Plads

2023 Dates – November 3rd – December 21st

Højbro Plads Christmas market is located right in the centre of Copenhagen’s Christmas area and is one of the best Christmas markets in Copenhagen.

Illuminated tree and wooden hut at the Christmas Market in Copenhagen

Shop to your heart’s content at the market and along Stroget, the main pedestrian shopping street and one of the longest streets in Europe.

The shops are dressed for the season, and it is hard not to buy all the gifts and decorations on show.

I couldn’t resist buying a large ceramic Father Christmas, which proved challenging to get home in my hand luggage without breaking, but with determination, I succeeded.

Stroget, Copenhagen

When the urge to sit down and indulge in cake and coffee hits you, head to Cafe Norden.

This well-loved cafe, located in cosy historical surroundings on the corner of Stroget, is expensive but a real experience.

Serving up some of the most decadent cakes I have seen in the city, Cafe Norden is the best place to warm up while you satisfy your cravings.

If you are looking for lunch or dinner, there are many cool restaurants to choose from, including several vegan-friendly restaurants in Copenhagen.

And, of course, you can’t miss the delicious Copenhagen bakeries for traditional Danish pastries to eat as you wander around the Christmas markets.

Julemarked Kongens Nytorv

Kings new square christmas market.

2023 Dates – 3rd November – 21st December

The Kongens Nytorv market, lined with charming stalls, is in front of the famous Hotel D’Angleterre.

Established in 1753, the hotel’s facade is festively decorated with gigantic baubles, tinsel and lifesize Nordic toy soldiers.

Head inside the hotel for a coffee or hot chocolate as a respite from the cold. The hotel’s interior is just as impressive as the outside facade.

Freetown Christiania Christmas Market

Awaiting 2023 Dates

Freetown Christiania is in Christianshavn and is accessible by train from central Copenhagen.

It is a free state within the city where squatters took control of an abandoned military base in the 1970s.

The open sale of cannabis on its streets is subject to continual police raids, but its community continues to grow.

This unconventional Christmas market is held in Grey Hall, the focal point of Christiania’s community.

Visitors can buy original hand-crafted items like jewellery, candles, tree decorations, hats, mirrors and cards.

Christiania is worth visiting for its Christmas market, vibrant and eclectic street art , and resident characters.

visit copenhagen julemarked

Wander through its maze of busy stalls, see the crafts being made and grab a bite to eat.

Christiania was my favourite market as its gifts were unique, and I enjoyed talking to the stallholders about their crafts.

A word of caution, wander around Christiania because it is an interesting place, but be careful where and what you take photographs of, especially along “Pusher Street”, or you will be told, in no uncertain terms, to put your camera away.

My Honest Opinion of Copenhagen at Christmas

What month did I travel?

How was the weather?

It was freezing and rained and snowed at times.

Would I recommend the Scandic Kodbyn?

Yes. Scandic Kodbyn  is an excellent hotel to use as a base to explore the city. It is a close walk to the central train station, suitable for arriving and departing. The decor is funky, and the staff are friendly.

If you want more hotel recommendations, check out this Copenhagen accommodation guide written by a Danish local.

a troll made of wood infront of a street art mural

Would I recommend three nights in Copenhagen?

Denmark’s capital is one of the most magical places to celebrate Christmas, and the markets are lovely.

There are many things to do in Copenhagen in December, apart from the markets, that are a delight to discover.

Buying a Copenhagen City Card is a good option, allowing unlimited travel and entry into Copenhagen’s main tourist attractions.

The festive set-up of the Tivoli Gardens was the highlight of my trip to Copenhagen at Christmas. Even without going on any rides, it’s one of the best places in Copenhagen to visit.

5 Magical Christmas Markets To Visit This Year In Copenhagen

Katherine Notman

Christmas is a big deal in Copenhagen!

With Denmark opening to tourists from October 25, you can bet there will be a rush of excited faces from across the world, ready to feel the wonderful atmosphere of a Copenhagen Christmas. And who can blame them? The Danish Christmas spirit is world-famous! In Santa Barbara, California, there’s even a Danish village named Solvang that holds an incredible Julefest with all of the hallmarks of a Danish Christmas market! So, if you love Christmas then Copenhagen is going to blow your socks (or Christmas stockings) off with its many magical festive markets.

1. Julemarked Kongens Nytorv

View this post on Instagram

📅November 12 – December 22

Julemarked is so cosy and soul-warming, with plenty of traditional Danish Christmas treats on offer. From gløgg to pepparkakor and plenty in between, this market combines food stalls with gorgeous homemade gifts and ornaments you’ll want to take home and give to your family. Moreover, this beautiful square in Copenhagen is quintessentially Danish, having been here since 1670.

📅November 19 – January 2

Tivoli is one of Copenhagen’s most famous locations, and when it comes to season events they really go all-out here. Danes really know how to create an incredible atmosphere and Tivoli could not embody this national talent more. The decorations are always magical, then there are stalls dotted around the gardens and, of course, you get to go on all of the rides because the Christmas market is included in your ticket fee.

3. HC Andersen Julemarked

📅November 12 – December 12

HC Andersen Julemarked celebrates the incredible spirit of H C Andersen’s fairytales with an (almost) equally enchanting market, full of delicious food to eat, performances, and lovely gifts to browse. You can find it at Nytorv and you’ll be amazed by the decorations.

4. Højbro Plads Julemarked

It costs absolutely nothing to walk around Højbro Plads Julemarked and it’s such a lovely place to spend the evening. There will be plenty of Christmas trees, warming mugs of delicious beverages, and hygge in spades!

5. Kronborg Christmas Market

📅November 29 – December 8

Ever been to a Christmas Market in a Medieval castle? Well, this year’s your chance because the Kronborg market is back on. Here you can buy clothes, toys and much more in absolutely magnificent surroundings. Entrance is 50 DKK on Fridays and 75 DKK on Saturdays and Sundays, but that also buys you entrance to the other parts of the castle.

Julemarked Højbro Plads: Copenhagen’s Enchanting Christmas Market

30-something year old Filipina woman with a brown beanie and a beige jacket, sipping on gløgg, a mulled wine, at Højbro Plads Christmas Market in Copenhagen, Denmark.

If you had told me three years ago (It is November 2022 as we speak) that I would be going to fly off to Europe and stroll around the Christmas Markets, I’d probably laugh and be in disbelief.

Three years ago, I wrote about the small Christkindlmarkt in Sacramento . Fast forward a few months later, a momentous pandemic shook the world. Things looked so bleak that I was so worried I would never be able to travel again .

But hope was not lost as the world slowly started opening up. I decided to treat myself to a solo trip to Copenhagen for my belated 33rd birthday. It just so happened that some of the Christmas markets were open in mid-November. I visited the Christmas market in Højbro Plads, which is right near Strøget, one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe.

Julemarked (which literally means Christmas Market ) at Højbro Plads is one of the many Christmas markets in Copenhagen.

About Julemarked Højbro Plads

Højbro plads’ brief history.

Højbro Plads did not exist until the 1795 Copenhagen fire . Before that, it was a dense neighborhood. Today? The plaza connects to Strøget, Copenhagen’s biggest shopping area (and one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets!) and Christiansborg Palace. Højbro Plads is marked by the statue of Bishop Absalon , the founder of Copenhagen as a city.

The Enchanting Christmas Market in Copenhagen Today

Every year, from mid-November to days before Christmas, over 180,000 lights illuminate Højbro Plads along with surrounding Christmas trees, decorations, and log cabins selling crafts and holiday treats. Thousands crowd the square with loved ones and enjoy a nice cup of gløgg, while children play and savor hot chocolate.

Rows of log cabins spread Højbro Plads as booths selling drinks, desserts, gifts, holiday decorations, and knitted scarves and gloves.

While you will see traditional Danish holiday goodies, this Christmas Market draws inspiration from other European cities (especially from Germany). You can see it with one of the cabins serving the German glühwein alongside the Scandanavian gløgg . You may also come across one cabin selling Italian pastries, and another one selling Greek gyro sandwiches.

What to see

Lights, lights, everywhere.

With almost 200,000 lights strung on the cabins, Christmas trees, and reindeer installations, you feel like you stepped out of a fairytale. Night time is the best time to visit, but it’s also beautiful when the sun sets and the sky is a darker bright blue.

Gifts to bring back home

There are so many cabins selling Christmas decor, art, and ornaments to bring home. Since I didn’t have much room left in my bags, I wanted to get something small, simple, and related to Copenhagen and/or Denmark. I ended up buying a Denmark flag Christmas ornament made from Nielgaard Glass Art , one of the vendors. I can’t wait to add it to our tree!

So if you’re stuck on what kind of souvenirs to get for family and friends, scope out what the vendors are selling. That way, you’re supporting Danish businesses!

Santa and his sleigh

Santa comes sometime in the evening, so don’t miss an opportunity to take a photo with him! I didn’t get a chance to because I felt weird about taking a photo with him by myself since I went solo. I regret not taking one and wish I didn’t worry about what other people thought of it, especially people I would never see again.

Even if you don’t get a chance to see or take a photo with Santa, you can always take some photos in his sleigh, which has a permanent spot in this Christmas market in Copenhagen.

What to eat and drink

This deep-fried donut hole is a classic Danish holiday treat. The name actually means “apple slice”, as in the past, there used to be an apple slice as a filling. The cabin that serves æbleskiver has three pieces dusted with powder and raspberry jam. I loved it so much that I had it three times during my stay!

æbleskiver, a deep fried donut hole with jam and powdered sugar at Copenhagen's Højbro Plads Christmas Market

I’m not a huge sausage or hot dog eater, but I wonder what I was missing out on before I tried currywurst. This German dish consists of cut up sausages marinated with curry ketchup, curry powder and other spices. Normally, it’s served with a side of fries, but the cabin served it with a hot dog bun and you just plop it on top. My tastebuds were partying!

No Christmas market in Copenhagen is complete without a warm cup of gløgg, a Swedish mulled wine with dried fruits and nuts (which are meant to be eaten). There is usually a splash of aquavit, a Scandanavian liquor. If not, most subsitute with vodka. In Højbro Plads, you can also pay more for gløgg with more alcohol.

Gløgg vs. glühwein: What’s the difference?

We know that gløgg is the Scandanavian version of the widely-known German glühwein, but what else? You’ll find star anise in glühwein, but not gløgg. Glühwein does not use cardamom and ginger, while those are staples in gløgg. Both have cinnamon, cloves and orange. Gløgg is a lot sweeter, and adds the dried fruits, nuts, and liquor not found in glühwein.

Mini crepes

One of the cabins served mini crepes, that come in batches in a paper container. You can add sauces of your choice and even alcohol! I ordered it with Nutella and Bailey’s, which was quite an interesting combination. It’s so fun (and cute) seeing the cook make them in his very own mini crepe maker!

Yes, you heard that right. Christmas markets all over Copenhagen sell churros as well. While I haven’t tried it, my tour guide from Copenhagen Free Walking Tours raved about them (well, specifically the ones in Nyhavn).

Hot Chocolate

Not in the mood for gløgg or anything alcoholic? You can never go wrong with hot chocolate, especially for kids. I recommend getting the hot chocolate at the cabin that also serves æbleskiver. It’s nice, rich, and velvety, especially with the whipped cream!

hot chocolate and æbleskiver sold at Højbro Plads, Copenhagen's Christmas Market.

Other Christmas Markets in Copenhagen

Spoiler alert: there are other Christmas markets in Copenhagen you have to check out. With Denmark being the home of hygge , do Christmas markets not exude coziness?!

I came a week or two earlier before all the other Christmas markets opened up. Oh well, I guess that’s the trade-off for being to book a trip during Veterans Day weekend in the US and not lose too much time off, correct?! After all, I could always use it as an excuse to come back…I have fallen in love with Copenhagen, after all 🙂 And who knows, maybe Cecilio and I will have a kid in tow if we ever come back one of these years!

Tivoli Gardens Christmas Market

There is nothing more magical than holiday cheer in Tivoli Gardens , one of Europe’s oldest amusement parks (they also inspired Disney!). There are also more traditional Danish food options like roasted pork sandwiches, rice pudding, and marzipan. The rides are open, and at night there are light projections all around. You can also watch The Nutcracker in the Tivoli Concert Hall!

Julemarked Kongens Nytorv

A few blocks away lies a Christmas Market in Nongens Nytorv , which is right next to Nyhavn and Charlottenborg Palace. It is the most similar to Højbro Plad’s Christmas market and is only a few minutes away.

Nyhavn Christmas Market

There are cabins and stalls across Nyhavn, Copenhagen’s most popular and photographed attraction! For a quintessential, hyggelig Copenhagen experience during cooler months, you cannot miss walking around Nyhavn with even more gløgg and æbleskiver in your hands!

Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market

Named after Denmark’s most famous children’s author, this Christmas market is located in the heart of Strøget. It’s suited for people of all ages, but especially for the little ones!

Christiana Jukemarked

This is not your typical Christmas market, that’s for sure. And it certainly isn’t family friendly. This market is located in Freetown Christiana, an autonomous district in Copenhagen’s Christianshavn neighborhood. Formely a military base, Freetown Christiana is a hippie town known as a Green Light District, selling cannabis even though it’s illegal in Denmark. In the Freetown Christiana Christmas market , you’ll be able to find handmade goods from independent artists.

Don’t miss out on the Højbro Plads Christmas market!

I loved spending time at Højbro Plads that I probably spent more time there in lieu of other attractions and restaurants in Copenhagen I could’ve been going to, lol! I highly recommend going if you ever do have a chance to visit Copenhagen in November and December, especially because it starts in early November!

NOTE: This Copenhagen Christmas Market guide was written after my visit in 2021, but has been updated with the most recent info and dates I could find online. Do note that some details/locations may differ year to year though, so let me know in the comments if you notice anything inaccurate.

Known as one of the world’s most magical cities, Copenhagen is truly a dream come true at Christmas time, with cozy markets, festive fairytale backdrops, and enough shimmery lights to make you forget it’s dark by 3:30pm.

Last year, I spent a festive birthday getaway in the city, and embraced the holidays there in the best possible way: a little wine drunk, a little sugar high, and very, VERY emotionally unstable over turning another year older.

In this post, I’ll be sharing the most magical things to do in Copenhagen at Christmas time, from outrageously lavish amusement parks to cozy Christmas markets and food halls. Oh, and I’ll tell you about the hotel we stayed at , which had FREE WINE HOURS every evening, at each of their multiple locations around the city.

Read this and I guarantee you’ll be Copen-havin’ the most festive time of your life. Now, before I drive you away with any more cringey wordplay, let’s get to the list.

Save this list of Christmas Things to Do in Copenhagen for later!

You’ll be very glad you did.

1. Head to Tivoli Gardens

If there’s only time for one Christmas attraction during your time in Copenhagen, make sure it’s this one.

Tivoli Gardens is the world’s 2nd oldest amusement park, and by far one of the most beautiful places to visit in the city at Christmas time.

Spread across 20 gorgeous acres, this park goes all out for the holidays, with thousands of sparkling lights, enchantingly elaborate decor and a variety of stalls selling festive food and drink… all of which make this spot more than worth the admission fee.

And for thrillseekers interested in a side of adrenaline with their sugar high, Tivoli is also home to some iconic rides, alongside plenty of fairground games and fun entertainment.

It does get busy here though, so my tip is to actually stay until the very end, when you’ll almost feel like you have the park to yourself.

2. Bumble around Copenhagen’s Christmas markets

Besides the market stalls at Tivoli, you’ll find plenty of other Christmas markets or Julemarked scattered around the city.

Truthfully, I didn’t find the main Christmas markets in Copenhagen ideal for shopping, with many of the same stalls appearing over and over… but I did find them lovely to wander through, and perfectly atmospheric for a warming cup of Gløgg. I mean, you’re not going to visit Copenhagen at Christmas time and not see the markets, right?

So, here are some of the most popular (albeit touristy) Copenhagen Christmas Markets to add to your list… and I’ll list out some better alternatives for shopping in the next bit.

King’s New Square Christmas Market (Julemarked Kongens Nytorv)

One of the Copenhagen’s larger Christmas markets can be found in the sprawling square of Kongens Nytorv, AKA King’s New Square.

This historic square dates back to the 17th century, and is lined with some of the most luxurious buildings in the city, from the famous Magasin du Nord Department Store to the opulent Hôtel d’Angleterre (which is decked out with a new Christmassy facade every year).

This market offers a nice mix of decorations and wooden stalls selling a variety of gifts and delicious treats (of which the hot dogs, I can definitely vouch for!)

NOTE: The focus at this Copenhagen Christmas Market is definitely more on food and drink, rather than shopping, but the beautiful backdrops and plentiful lights make it worth at least a quick stop for a drink or bite to eat.

visit copenhagen julemarked

High Bridge Square Christmas Market (Julemarked Højbro Plads)

Google “Copenhagen Christmas Market”, and odds are you’ll be looking at a photo of the Christmas market at High Bridge Square (AKA Højbro Plads)… probably because of its aggressively unsubtle sign that says “CHRISTMAS MARKET” in all caps.

Subtlety aside, this market is actually really lovely, with a cozy Xmas market atmosphere similar to what you’d find in central Europe.

There’s red wooden chalets selling gifts and typical  Christmas market foods  like sausages, plus plenty of (partially) covered spots to perch and enjoy a warming cup of something spiked and sweet.

visit copenhagen julemarked

HC Andersen Christmas Market (HC Andersen Julemarked)

For a true fairytale experience, another Copenhagen Christmas Market you must visit is the H.C. Andersen Christmas Market in Nytorv Square, named after the famed Danish storyteller who brought us the original Little Mermaid and the Emperor’s New Clothes.

This Copenhagen Christmas market can be found just off the city’s famous Strøget shopping street, and is lined with festive little Christmas trees, and full of kid-friendly activities, as well as the classic wooden stalls selling food, drinks, and gifts.

visit copenhagen julemarked

Copenhagen Zoo Christmas Market (Zoo Marked)

Another one of Copenhagen’s top Christmas markets can be found at the city zoo.

I didn’t get a chance to see this one during my visit (too busy chugging the free hotel wine), BUT if the official website is anything to go by, I missed out big time. There’s 900 Christmas trees. 400,000 lights. Reindeer. Carriage rides. And market stalls – plenty of them.

Please don’t repeat my mistake and go meet those reindeer for me.

visit copenhagen julemarked

Freetown Christiania Christmas Market

Lastly, believe it or not, even Copenhagen’s infamous Freetown Christiania (originally created when squatters took over a military base in the 70s) has their own Christmas market.

Photos aren’t allowed in most of the area, so I can’t show you much, but it’s an interesting spot to visit, with some handmade gifts to browse like jewelry and candles, along with plenty of unique art installations and murals.

But, fair warning: don’t come here expecting the typical European Christmas Market experience with elaborately decorated chalets and a million lights… and certainly don’t take photos and video unless expressly allowed, like at the Christiania Art Gallery:

3. Go shopping at some local design markets

Besides these main Copenhagen Christmas markets which are definitely better known for their atmosphere than their shopping, there are also various smaller, design-oriented markets in the city that are perfect for those looking to shop and grab unique gifts.

Be sure to research on local sites like this before your trip if that interests you, but here are a few of the most famous ones to take note of:

  • Vesterbro RAW Julemarked (Vesterbro RAW Christmas Market)
  • Designmuseum Julemarked (Design Museum Christmas Market)
  • FindersKeepers Christmas Market
  • Jul i Jaegersborggade (Christmas at Jaegersborggade)

4. Stop by Nyhavn

Pronounced “Nee-hown”, this colourful 17th century port is one of the most recognizable sights in Copenhagen, adorning every postcard, keychain and braggy Instagram post.

And against all odds, somehow Nyhavn becomes even more magical during the festive season, when photogenic Christmas market stalls pop up along the water, selling a variety of goodies to go with the picture-perfect views.

You’ll also find many enticing restaurants and bars on this strip, but beware of inflated prices thanks to their hyper-popular location. My tip? Grab a gløgg to go and stroll around to appreciate the views, rather than dip into your life savings to afford a cube of cheese.

visit copenhagen julemarked

5. Get cozy in a hygge-centric restaurant or bar

The Danish concept of ‘hygge’ has taken over the world in recent years, championing a lifestyle that prioritizes coziness, comfort and contentment… often in the informal company of friends.

Honestly, it’s a lifestyle I’ve cultivated all my life through fluffy socks and pyjamas, without ever knowing it had a name.

And the great news for my fellow cozy cultists is that finding hygge couldn’t be easier in Copenhagen, with countless restaurants, bars, and cafes that ooze coziness from every corner.

Again, our hotel even had a free wine hour every evening… which was a perk I took thorough advantage of.

visit copenhagen julemarked

HOTEL NOTE: If you’re looking for a cozy, reasonably affordable place to stay, I can definitely recommend booking with Brøchner Hotels. We stayed at this one and had SUCH a good experience and only 90% of that was due to the wine. Plus, you can take advantage of the free wine hour at any of their hotels in the city, which is wonderfully convenient.

6. Gorge on festive Danish treats

Another Copenhagen Christmas must-do? Eat. And drink. and eat again.

Some note-worthy must-tries include…

  • Gløgg (or Glögg): The Danish take on mulled wine – hot wine mulled with warming spices, usually served with some nuts and fruit on the bottom
  • Æbleskriver: Mini round puffy pancakes served with powdered sugar and jam
  • Risalamande: A cold and sweet rice pudding, often served with chopped almonds and/or a cherry sauce

visit copenhagen julemarked

7. Feast away at the Torvehallerne

Now, combining the two items above, one place I can highly recommend to satisfy both Hygge and Hunger requirements is the Torvehallerne, a beautiful food market in central Copenhagen that is filled with amazing eats, and beautifully festive decor.

At this covered food hall, you can indulge your inner foodie with a variety of tasty eats, from the classic Danish Smørrebrød (open faced sandwiches) to international street foods from around the world.

They even host the annual Danish Gløgg Championship here, so you know they take the festive season pretty seriously.

visit copenhagen julemarked

8. Go ice skating

Of course, another Christmassy thing to in Copenhagen is ice skating.

During the holiday season, there are several skating rinks that pop up around the city, including the Frederiksberg Runddel Ice Rink and Broen’s Ice Rink , which is luckily lined with street food stalls to replenish those calories lost as you glided around, trying not to die.

But for those who’d prefer to not wipe out on the ice, a more low-key festive activity in Copenhagen is simply…

My VIP Zone is full of freebies just like this ready-to-go 'winter in Europe' packing list.

9. Visit Copenhagen’s prettiest shops and department stores

Festive cheer can be found all along Copenhagen’s centre in the form of trees and lights, but there are some shops known for doing it better than the rest, like the Magasin du Nord, a 19th century department store known for its glitzy offerings spread across five floors.

Of course, there’s also the beautiful Chrismassy facade of the luxurious Hôtel d’Angleterre next door.

And Royal Copenhagen, who has held a special Christmas table exhibition at their  Flagship Store since 1963.

visit copenhagen julemarked

10. Enjoy a hot tub or sauna session

If you want to complete your Christmas in Copenhagen with an aggressively Nordic activity, then consider booking yourself a hot tub/sauna session with epic views of the city… and the option to plunge yourself in an ice pool to complete the wellness cycle.

Copenhot is one way you can check this item off your bucket list, with bookable hot tubs and saunas that offer sweeping views over Copenhagen. As a bonus, there’s even a bartender on-site to serve you drinks while you soak.

visit copenhagen julemarked

11. Venture out to a festive castle

If your Copenhagen Christmas visit is long enough to plan for a day trip (sadly, mine was not), then consider heading out to Kronborg Castle , famous for being the castle in Hamlet, but also home to one of Denmark’s most beloved Christmas markets!

Failing that, there’s also the Christiansborg Palace or Rosenborg Castle in the city, both of which deliver some magical vibes of their own.

visit copenhagen julemarked

12. Check out the Santa Lucia parade

Lastly, if you’re lucky enough to time your visit for December 13th, you’ll be able to check out the famous Santa Lucia parade, where kayakers deck their kayaks out in lights and decorations, and take to Copenhagen’s canals to sing carols and spread Christmas cheer.

Yes, that may well be the the most adorable tradition I’ve ever heard.

10 Ways to Make the Most of Christmas in Copenhagen

Jul love christmas in the danish capital., when living in denmark. i say. bring on christmas..

It’s November now. The clock has turned back and the dark descends earlier each evening. By Christmas, it’ll be down to a mere seven hours of daylight per day around Denmark. No need to fret. Don’t be concerned. Bust out your candles and spark on those fairy lights. Let’s get our Jul on. It’s one of the things I adored most about living in Denmark. And Danish Christmas activities kick off quickly – the first Friday of November – with J-Dag and the delivery of julebryg , or Christmas beer all over Copenhagen. Soon the Julemanden , Denmark’s version of Santa, will illuminate the streets with stars, hearts, and twinkles swathed above this pretty city’s historic center.

(Originally posted November 2016 – current as of November 2022)

How to celebrate this beautiful and hyggelige* Jul season when here in the capital? There are so many fun ways to take part and festive things to do, but these are a few of my favorites. Without further ado, here are 10 ways to help you make the most of your Christmas in Copenhagen:

visit copenhagen julemarked

Top 10 Ways to Make the Most of  Your Copenhagen Christmas

1 | celebrate the lights.

Copenhagen’s center town is a twisty cobble of charming old streets and colorful buildings. And while grey and potentially dreary this time of year, once strung with swaths of greenery and lights so twinkly, you might not even notice the chill at your cheek. Come the second Saturday of November – this year the 13th – you’ll find singers and sausages and yes, Julemanden too. All will be on hand to get you ready for the season. Let the lights illuminate the city I say.

Of course, if you miss this event, you can witness the wonder any day through the end of the year. My most favorite lane to linger under the lights is probably Kronprinsensgade off Købmagergade, not far from Amagertorv – so sparkly, elegant, and special.

Copenhagen Christmas Opening Event Saturday 13 November 2022 | 14:30-16:30 Amagertorv/Kultorvet, København K

14:45 | Julemanden and his elves arrive at Amagertov to hand out treats and seasonal tunes from the red uniformed Postman’s Orchestra.

INSIDER TIP: In years, past Santa has come in by boat near the Memorial Anchor at Nyhavn around 14:00. They parade off in a horse-drawn carriage around Kongens Nytorv in front of Hotel D’Angleterre before turning towards the Stork Fountain at Amagertorv.

15:29 | Countdown to the lights turning on with great cheers (at least for 13 popular streets in the inner old city.)

🌟

16:35 | Countdown part two for the lighting of Købmagergade, Rosengården, and Frederiksborggade plus the 3.5-meter reindeer that tops the fountain in Kultorvet’s center.

2 | Visit a Julemarked | Christmas Markets in Copenhagen

From mid-November, Julemarked (Christmas markets) will pop up on nearly every corner, in every church, and in nearly every historic building. You must try the Danish Christmas eat only available this time of year – a flæskesteg sandwich – roast pork with crackling, red cabbage, pickles, mustard, and sauce. It’s delicious. Washed down with a collectible mug of warm gløgg – Denmark’s version of mulled wine – and you’re ready to tackle some shopping or see more lights.

But while Copenhagen’s biggest Christmas markets have a certain kitschy (touristy) charm, don’t limit yourself to their standard Jule fare. In this city known for design, seek out a design or  kunstmarked – an art market. I prefer these unique and special markets full of local artists, creators, and makers selling their one-of-a-kind art and design goods. Click on the link below to check out where to find Copenhagen best little Christmas Markets this year. My favorite is in Kødbyen, the uber-cool Meatpacking district.

3 | try the gløgg | scandinavia’s warm christmas in a cup.

Gløgg is Denmark’s version of warm spiced mulled wine. Scandis like it a bit sweeter and always serve it with dried fruit, usually raisins and sliced almonds at the bottom of your cup. You’ll find it offered everywhere come Juletime in Copenhagen. Want to know where But some are better than others, of course. For the fanciest cup o’ gløgg , head to the elegant and festive Hotel D’Angleterre near the newly reopened Kongens Nytorv. And while maybe an overnight stay isn’t in your Christmas budget – splurge for a special afternoon out and step inside for their famous white gløgg and marzipan snowballs by the fire. Hotel D’Angleterre fashions theirs with white wine and apricots. A super swanky Christmas treat.

The City’s Best Gløgg Competition

Want to try the city’s best gløgg ? The wonderful food market Torvehallerne hosts an annual competition to taste the top tipples on Sunday the 20th of November, 2022. With back-to-back awards in 2018 and 2019, Torvehallerne wine and spirit purveyor, Noorbohandelen always gets my vote.

So I convinced fellow blogger and Copenhagen ex-local Carolyn Eddie to try a mug with me. We got the inside scoop on what makes theirs a winner. First, they infuse vodka, rum, and calvados with a secret spice mixture (we guessed cinnamon, cloves, and ginger) in casks for two years . Then they take a juicy Tempranillo red wine and blend it with the mulled spirits and top it off with some white port. This gløgg is spicy and strong and always a pretty fair price. Who will take home the top glass this year?

4 | See the Tree Lighting at City Hall

A tradition dating back to 1914, every year on the first Sunday of Advent, Julemanden (Santa) parades through the city with the historic Copenhagen Fire Brigade starting at Nyhavn Canal. Around 15:40 he returns to the Rådhuspladsen , City Hall, where he will be met by the mayor. Speeches will be made, songs will be sung, Santa and his Nisse will greet the visitors. Then, in a grand fashion, he will turn on the nearly 20-meter spruce tree, lit with 800 LED lights and 100 Christmas hearts.

8 | Dance Into Nødderknækkeren | The Nutcracker

This is a tradition near and dear to my heart, having danced in the Nutcracker for seven years of my youth. You have a choice of where to see it performed here in Copenhagen. The Royal Danish Ballet performs George Balanchine’s version at the gorgeous Gamle Scene , or Old Theater at Kongens Nytorv. Or take in the dancing with the Tivoli Ballet where you can experience the costumes and sets designed by the Danish Queen Margrethe herself. Both a magical experiences.

There is no Christmas without the Nutcracker, and it’s great to contribute to Tivoli’s Christmas atmosphere with a Christmas show, even Tivoli in 1874 as a frame. The Christmas Eve of the Nutcracker is one of my absolute favorites; a true classic, embracing adventure and magic for children and their families. Oh I love it, looks gorgeous – made for Christmas! One of those cities where you just have to go full-on festive and embrace the freak out of it. White gløgg and marcipan snowballs by the fire – not sure what that is but I want all of it!!

Haha! Embrace the freak out of I try! Gløgg is the Scandi version of mulled wine – usually has some slivered almonds and dried fruit at the bottom – some people eat, some just like for flavor. Marcipan snowballs – I’ll send you a pic!

Sounds lush, and I adore marzipan anything

Then you would love these!

I agree so much! I live in Sweden and the Nordic countries take Christmas to the next level!

Where in Sweden? We spent a quiet but super quiet Christmas in West Sweden two years ago! I love Scandi Christmas. Glædelig Jul from Denmark!

Fantastic as ever!!

Missing getting gløgg with you this year! Cheers from here friend!

Hi, what time in December would you recommend? I’m looking at beginning of December, but late November is also available. When do the lights start? I’ve been there a couple of years ago for a month in the summer, but there is a chance I might move there. My plan is to scout how I might deal with the winter and combine it with Christmas activities. Is late Nov. equally nice? Thank you.

Hej from here! If you really want to test your Danish winter skills – you should come in January when the twinkly hygge is all boxed up for the year. But – Christmas in Copenhagen is pretty darn cute and you can get it late November for sure. Once the Christmas beer has been ceremoniously delivered on J-Day (November 1, 2019) the season has officially started. To get the most bang for your buck though – I’d try for the first weekend in December when the huge tree at City Hall is turned on for the four weeks up to Christmas. Tons of little local artisan Julemarked (Christmas markets) are on that weekend as well. Some of the more commercial Christmas markets will be going late November though and there will be plenty of gløgg to try all around town. Are you moving for a job? Or school? Cheers!

Hi, This is super helpful, thank you! It would be for my partners job, probably for several years. We both really liked it, but 6h of daylight/day is a bit scary…

It’s a very lovely place to live – we’ve been here 5 years (also said it would probably be a couple years). And the shortest day here offers 7 whole hours of daylight. It’s really the worst in January, but there are ways of getting through it! And in summer you get 17.5 hours of daylight – so you soak it all up!

So, if the lights are on from Nov. and there is a festival in Feb. is the winter that terribly long? What has you experience been?

Define winter. Where are you coming from? It doesn’t snow that much here, but it is damp and cold and dark. Danes say spring starts March 1, but we’ve had flurries as late as April 1 – and sometimes a month of sun in Feb. it all depends. The hardest part for me is the dark. But I come from Oregon where winter is wet and grey as well.

Yes, it would depend. I am used to all kinds of winters, I grew up in Slovenia, where we used to get snow and cold(up to -10), winter would be late Nov. to end of Feb, but the snow wouldn’t really stay. Now it is much milder. I experienced one of the coldest winters in Poland – in 2009 that the frost started to give way in May( that was tough) and my partner is Canadian, I have been there for winter breaks, also cold and snow tends to stay for longer periods. We lived in Paris for 4 years, where it’snot very cold, just moist and grey also – it’s the gray that is the downer…

The canopy of twinkly lights over the Kronprinsessegade street looks wonderful. I would have loved to celebrate Christmas in Copenhagen had I not planned already otherwise. Next year, I will enjoy the festival here.

Wondering where to find the best Christmas markets in Copenhagen? Here is a quick overview:

Tivoli Gardens

Official Website

We have to start with our personal favorite during our visit: Christmas at Tivoli Gardens.

We’d highly recommend saving this spot for last, as no other will be able to compare!

These gardens are the world’s 2nd oldest amusement park, and truly go all out at Christmas, with thousands of twinkling lights, jawdropping decorations and plenty of stalls selling festive food and drink. For an extra fee, you can also add an extra thrill to your visit by hopping on some of Tivoli’s iconic rides.

While this is the only Copenhagen Christmas Market with an admission fee, we think it’s well worth it, as the decorations are truly spectacular. If you’re looking for the most magical Christmas market in Copenhagen to visit, this is it.

King’s New Square (Kongens Nytorv)

For a more typical Christmas market setting, the Julemarked Kongens Nytorv (King’s Square Christmas Market) is probably Copenhagen’s most traditional Christmas market, offering a nostalgic maze of beautiful decorations and wooden stalls selling gifts and delicious treats.

Set in a historic square dating back to the 17th century, the atmosphere here is not only romantic and magical, but perfectly festive, and a great place to enjoy all the magic of Copenhagen at Christmas time.

High Bridge Square (Højbro Plads)

The Julemarked Højbro Plads (High Bridge Square Christmas Market) is another Copenhagen Christmas Market worth checking out.

This market offers a traditional Christmas market atmosphere similar to what you’d find in central Europe, with wooden stalls selling gifts and typical Christmas market foods like sausages.

Nytorv Square (Nytorv)

For a true fairytale experience, another Copenhagen Christmas Market you must visit is the H.C. Andersen Christmas Market (HC Andersen Julemarked), named after the famed Danish storyteller who brought us the original Little Mermaid.

This market is full of kid-friendly activities, and plenty of wonderful stalls selling food, drinks, and gifts.

What to Eat & Drink at Copenhagen’s Christmas Markets

We spent two days eating our way around Copenhagen’s Christmas markets and our waistlines have been screaming for help ever since.

Here are some of the most popular (and most delicious) must-tries in terms of food and drink around Copenhagen’s Xmas market scene:

If there’s a single must-have at Copenhagen’s Christmas markets, it’s Gløgg.

Think of Gløgg as the Nordic answer to Glühwein, Vin Chaud, or Mulled Wine.

Recipes vary widely, but at its core, Gløgg is a hot wine mulled with spices, often accompanied by juice, syrup or additional spirits.

After sampling a few Gløggs in Copenhagen, we may actually prefer it to traditional Glühwein! The overall taste is a bit sweeter, and there’s usually a fair bit of dried fruit and slivered almonds waiting for you at the bottom of your cup.

Of course, the best way to find out is to just sample it for yourself…!

visit copenhagen julemarked

While directly translated to “apple slices”, these fluffy balls of dough are more like pancakes, typically served with a large dollop of jam and powdered sugar for dipping.

We tried some at Tivoli, and were pleasantly surprised by their mild lemony flavor as well. We’d definitely recommend trying these Danish treats while exploring Copenhagen’s Christmas markets – you won’t regret it!

visit copenhagen julemarked

Byg Selv Hot Dog (Build it Yourself Hot Dog)

Hot dogs are a big deal in Scandinavia, which is why it’s no surprise that sausages play a big role in Copenhagen’s Christmas markets, as they do in the German Xmas market food scene.

Especially popular are “ Byg Selv Hot Dogs”, AKA Build it Yourself Hot Dogs that are given to your plain, to be jazzed up with your own choice of condiments and toppings.

If you’re looking for a quick, satisfying, and relatively budget-friendly meal (by Copenhagen standards anyway), then make sure to grab one of these tasty hot dogs!

visit copenhagen julemarked

For another festive drink that’s seen across all the Christmas markets in Copenhagen, go for a Lumumba.

This drink is simply cocoa with a shot of rum or amaretto… but the result is undeniably tasty, especially when you spring for the extra whipped cream and marshmallows on top!

visit copenhagen julemarked

Brændte Mandler (Roasted Almonds)

Follow your nose long enough while exploring the Christmas markets in Copenhagen and you’re bound to find a stall selling Brændte Mandler – candied almonds that are coated in the most perfect caramelized sugar.

This is a must-have treat at any Christmas market, especially if they’re hot and fresh!

Mercados de Natal de Copenhaga, na Dinamarca.

Article Index

Christmas Markets have started in Copenhagen, marking the most anticipated season in Scandinavia, as the enthusiasm for Christmas is clearly visible in the capital of Denmark.

To ensure you make the most of these events, I’ve gathered information in this article about the seven most well-known Christmas Markets in the city, including their operating dates, locations, and some tips based on my personal experience exploring these beautiful markets.

In reality, there are more Christmas markets happening throughout Copenhagen, in places like museums, churches, community centers, and shopping malls. However, these seven are the largest, most renowned, and, in my opinion, well worth including in your Copenhagen itinerary.

I also provide accommodation suggestions in Copenhagen to help you choose a well-located hotel with reasonable prices.

So, take note of everything you need to know before traveling to experience Copenhagen’s Christmas Markets!

Best Christmas Markets in Copenhagen

Christmas market at tivoli gardens.

Mercado de Natal nos Jardins Tivoli.

Tivoli is Scandinavia’s most visited theme park and the third most visited in Europe. If you’re in Copenhagen during the Christmas season, you have another compelling reason to explore the enchanting Tivoli Park.

Each year, the Tivoli Christmas Market adopts a unique theme, influencing the park’s activities and decorations. In 2023, the chosen theme is the Festival of Hearts, adorning the venue with scattered hearts and the sparkle of Swarovski crystals.

At Nimb, the central square of Tivoli Gardens, stands a traditional 3.5-meter-high Christmas tree adorned with giant hearts. Over 70 thousand Christmas balls and approximately 1000 Christmas trees grace the park, creating a festive atmosphere.

The craft stalls, along with food and drink vendors, are concentrated in the Plænen area. Delight in sandwiches, hot dogs, Feuerzangebowl (mulled wine with rum), and snueknusser (a drink with lemon and mint).

Dates : Christmas in Tivoli runs from November 19 to December 31, 2023.

Location : Vesterbrogade 3, 1630 København V, Denmark.

Entrance : Weekday ticket: 155 DKK, Saturday and Sunday ticket: 165 DKK. Purchase at the ticket office or buy the Tivoli Gardens ticket c onveniently in advance online in euros.

Note : This ticket grants access to the venue; for unlimited carousel or Ferris wheel rides, opt for this ticket .

Christmas Market in Nyhavn (Nyhavn Christmas Market)

Nyhavn Christmas Market (Mercado de Natal do Porto de Copenhaga).

Despite being a highly touristy area with charming terraces and restaurants, the port of Copenhagen’s Nyhavn is known for its higher prices.

However, the Copenhagen Christmas Market situated by the harbor offers a unique atmosphere against the backdrop of the iconic colorful houses.

It’s undeniably a beautiful location, accentuated by the twinkle of Christmas lights. Consider taking a cruise before nightfall for an added enchanting experience.

Dates: November 3 to December 21, 2023.

Location: Nyhavn harbor.

Entrance: Free.

Christmas Market at Højbro Plads (Julemarked Højbro Plads)

Julemarked Hojbro Plads.

The Højbro Plads Christmas Market is located in the heart of Copenhagen’s historic center, making it a beloved spot for both locals and visitors.

Bearing striking similarities to German Christmas markets, it proudly holds the title of Copenhagen’s most international Christmas market.

And when I say this, it’s purely positive! I adored the alpine charm of the market stalls, along with the diverse crafts and delectable food offerings.

Witnessing sizable trays of sausages grilling over open flames is truly impressive. The enticing aroma alone is enough to make one salivate!

The market boasts an old-fashioned Christmas village ambiance, adorned with trees, decorations, approximately 280 thousand Christmas lights, and a delightful array of elves and reindeer, with Santa’s sleigh nearby.

Dates: November 3rd to December 21st, 2023.

Opening Hours:

  • Monday to Wednesday: 11:00 – 19:00
  • Thursday: 11:00 – 21:00
  • Friday: 11:00 – 21:00
  • Saturday: 11:00 – 21:00
  • Sunday: 12:00 – 19:00

Location: Højbro Plads Square, situated in Strøget, specifically between Storkespringvandet and the statue of Absalon in Christiansborg.

Christmas Market in Kongens Nytorv (Julemarked Kongens Nytorv)

Julemarked Kongens Nytorv.

Situated in the historic center of Copenhagen, this Christmas market offers more than just typical stalls with crafts, food, and drinks—it features mesmerizing 3D lighting installations that are truly worth a visit!

Adding to the festive atmosphere, Santa Claus makes appearances and is available for (free) photos with anyone who wishes to capture a moment with him.

Indulge in churros, toasted almonds, crepes, and pancakes. To complement these treats, savor a cup of Glühwein, the traditional mulled wine with spices, or opt for the Danish rendition known as Gløgg.

Best Things To Do and See in Copenhagen at Christmas

Natal em Copenhaga - Tivoli Gardens.

As you can see, there are several Christmas Markets in Copenhagen to discover, however, the city’s Christmas festivities are not limited to just markets.

So, here are some suggestions for events and activities not to be missed in Copenhagen at Christmas time.

Fun Fact : Over a thousand years ago, King Harold Bluetooth converted this Viking nation to Christianity. Today, while only 3% of Danes regularly attend Mass, an exception to this trend happens on Christmas Eve when a third of the population decides to go to church.

Santa Lucia Parade on the Canals of Copenhagen

Canais de Copenhaga.

If you happen to be in Copenhagen on December 13th, then don’t miss the Santa Lucia parade. And what makes this event special?

Imagine dozens of kayaks illuminated with lights and adorned with Christmas decorations, navigating the city’s canals while singing Christmas carols.

If you enjoyed this scene, take note that this parade passes through Nyhavn, Christianshavn, and Højbro Plads, with the boats setting out at dusk.

Cruise through the Canals departing from Nyhavn Harbor

Porto de Nyhavn.

Can you take a canal cruise in Copenhagen all year round? Yes, but at Christmas, it’s even more beautiful!

In other words, don’t miss the opportunity to see the lights, decorations, and Christmas stalls at Nyhavn Harbor during the holiday season. Believe me, you won’t regret the experience!

Guide to Visiting the Christmas Markets in Copenhagen in 3 Days

Comida nos Mercados de Natal de Copenhaga.

If you have three days to explore Copenhagen’s Christmas markets, know that it’s more than enough time.

To assist you, I’ve included a map with all the markets mentioned in this article.

Another piece of good news is that, with the exception of the Christiania Market, the remaining markets are located along Strøget, an extensive street with shops, cafes, and restaurants stretching over 1100 meters.

Hotels near the Christmas Markets in Copenhagen

I found hotels in Copenhagen to be quite expensive, but with some research, I managed to find one with a good location and reasonable prices.

So, I stayed at Cabin City (2 stars), close to the Central Station and the Christmas markets, and I enjoyed the experience.

Everything You Need to Know About the Christmas Markets in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Luzes de Natal na Rua Strøget Copenhaga.

What is the most popular Christmas Market in Copenhagen?

Mercado de Natal nos Jardins Tivoli, em Copenhaga.

The most popular Christmas Market in Copenhagen is the one at Tivoli Gardens, perhaps because it is one of the oldest in the city, despite having an entrance fee.

The attention to detail and the richness in the decoration of this amusement park are truly incredible, and for that reason, I understand why it is so popular.

However, for me, the Christmas Market in Copenhagen that I liked the most was the Hans Christian Andersen Market at Axeltorv Square, as the connection to the famous Danish writer is well-crafted.

When do the Christmas Markets in Copenhagen start?

Gløgg: vinho quente dinamarquês.

The Christmas Markets in Copenhagen begin in November; in fact, some, like the Nyhavn Market and a few in the historic center, opened their doors on November 3, 2023.

To find out the exact dates, as well as the days and hours the markets are open, I suggest checking the description in this article for each market.

What are the main Christmas events in Copenhagen?

Patinagem em Tivoli Gardens.

During Christmas in Copenhagen, several events take place in the city. Firstly, there are the Christmas markets, starting in November and extending until the end of the year.

Moreover, on various days and times, Santa Claus is available for photos at the markets (see information in this article).

Despite Christmas trees being scattered throughout the city, Copenhagen’s main Christmas tree stands in Hall Square, near City Hall.

Lastly, on December 13th, the Santa Lucia parade takes place, featuring a procession of kayaks adorned with Christmas themes navigating the city’s canals. The prime locations to witness this event are Nyhavn, Christianshavn, and Højbro Plads.

Are the Christmas Markets in Copenhagen safe?

Yes, as long as you stay vigilant and adhere to basic safety rules, you should have no issues at the markets, even with the large number of visitors.

In fact, Copenhagen is known for its low crime rates, making it safe to travel alone or walk the streets at night.

Is there card payment at the Christmas Markets, or do I need to withdraw Danish crowns?

Salsichas nos Mercados de Natal de Copenhaga.

Card payment at the stalls of the Christmas Markets in Copenhagen is not only possible but also encouraged.

In other words, you don’t need to worry about withdrawing Danish crowns in Copenhagen!

I used my Revolut card, and it always worked without any issues. This card is indeed very convenient!

How is the weather in Copenhagen at Christmas?

Vinho quente com especiarias - Gløgg.

As you might imagine, the weather in Copenhagen at Christmas is cold, with maximum temperatures hovering around 5º-3º Celsius. Rain is common, which turns into snow on colder days.

Therefore, come prepared with warm coats, waterproof clothing and footwear, a hat, and gloves.

Locals have a strong tradition of consuming hot beverages like coffee and tea (and mulled wine at Christmas markets), which greatly helps cope with the cold days of the Danish winter.

Final tips to make the most of the Christmas Markets in Copenhagen

Iluminação de Natal em Copenhaga.

  • You’ll likely not have time to visit all the Christmas Markets in Copenhagen, so I recommend choosing two or three to visit each day;
  • Check the opening hours of the markets to avoid the disappointment of arriving at one that’s closed;
  • Bring warm layered clothing that you can take off when entering indoor spaces, which usually have heating;
  • Waterproof footwear is essential to keep your feet warm, and bring a hat to keep your head warm;
  • Hot drinks work wonders if you want to warm up, but try not to overindulge in Glühwein (mulled wine);
  • You can easily walk from one market to another. Besides being eco-friendly, it also saves a few euros while enjoying the decorations on the streets.

Unmissable Christmas Markets in Copenhagen: Tivoli, Nyhavn, Højbro Plads, Kongens Nytorv, Hans Christian Andersen, Axeltorv, and Freetown Christiania.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Danish firefighters toiled Wednesday to extinguish the last pockets of a fire that gutted Copenhagen’s 400-year-old stock exchange building the previous day, as owners of the structure looked ahead to rebuilding the iconic landmark.

Tuesday’s blaze, which destroyed half of the building and toppled its dragon-tail spire, was believed to have started on the roof during renovations, but the cause remained unclear and police had yet to enter the burned part of the building to investigate.

No injuries were reported despite a hectic scramble in the first hour of the fire to remove valuables, with citizen volunteers helping officials and firefighters in an effort that managed to salvage much of the building’s priceless artwork.

“This is sad, so sad,” 44-year-old civil servant Mikkel Jensen said Wednesday as he looked up at twisted scaffolding still clinging to the ruins of the Old Stock Exchange.

The building, which dates from 1615 and is named the Boersen in Danish, is known for its green copper roof and distinctive 56-meter (184-foot) spire in the shape of four intertwined dragon tails.

The outer wall of the Stock Exchange has collapsed towards Boersgade, Copenhagen, Thursday, April 18, 2024. (Thomas Traasdahl/Ritzau Scanpix via AP)

Morten Langager, manager of the Danish Chamber of Commerce, which was headquartered in the Old Stock Exchange and owned the building, said it should “rise again.” His boss, chamber head Brian Mikkelsen, said the building will be rebuilt “no matter what” and that the board backed the idea.

The building was undergoing extensive renovations, and there are detailed records of the entire structure’s architecture, including photographs taken just last week of the dragon spire by the National Museum in Copenhagen.

However, no decision has yet been made about who will reconstruct the building, a project which would cost millions, if not billions of kroner (dollars). A cautious estimate said it could take up to 10 years.

Many in Denmark compared Tuesday’s fire to the April 2019 blaze at Notre Dame that destroyed the spire of the 800-year-old cathedral. Its restoration is slated for completion this year.

The extent of the damage, caused by flames and the tons of water poured to extinguish them, was still unknown.

“A lot has disappeared in the fire,” said Tim Ole Simonsen of the Greater Copenhagen Fire Department, which was working to secure remaining outer walls. Up to 40 shipping containers, filled with concrete, will be put around them to stabilize them, the fire department said.

That work will continue through the night. “The work is extensive and requires a large amount of equipment,” the fire department said in a statement.

Police hadn’t yet been able to enter the burned part of the building to begin investigating the cause of the fire, said Brian Belling, a Copenhagen police officer in charge of the investigation.

“It can take a long time to find the cause of a fire,” Belling said.

When the fire engulfed the building on Tuesday, passers-by, Chamber of Commerce staff, police officers and members of an army unit that had been sent to help raced inside the building to save its treasures.

Mikkelsen, who was one of the employees who ran in, told public broadcaster DR that the building had made a plan for what to save in a “worst case” scenario. When it became too dangerous for people to go up to the first floor, firefighters with breathing gear were sent in to retrieve priceless items, he said, adding that many of the building’s most valuable contents, which included irreplaceable paintings and other works of art, had been saved.

Among items saved was the huge 1895 painting “From Copenhagen Stock Exchange” by Danish artist P.S. Krøyer, the Chamber of Commerce said.

About an hour after the first reports of the fire on Tuesday, the blaze engulfed the spire and sent it crashing onto the building, which was shrouded by scaffolding, and onto the street behind.

The fire sent huge billows of smoke over downtown Copenhagen, and many government offices located nearby remained closed Wednesday because of a strong smell of smoke in the buildings. Employees were told to work from home.

The buildings must be cleaned and their ventilation checked before government ministry staff can return, said Rasmus Brandt Lassen, head of the Danish Building and Property Agency.

“We have told them that they should expect to work at home for the rest of the week,” Brandt Lassen said.

The exchange is considered a leading example of the Dutch Renaissance style in Denmark. The Chamber of Commerce moved into the building after Copenhagen’s stock exchange left in 1974.

Its dragon spire was one of the many of topping the city’s churches and castles, which have earned Copenhagen its nickname as “the city of spires.” Other copper-covered belfries include the serpentine spire of Our Savior’s Church, those of the Renaissance Rosenborg Castle downtown, and the tower of the Christiansborg Palace which houses the Danish parliament.

A main road running past the Old Stock Exchange remained closed Wednesday.
