Born Michael Wayne Atha on 30 December 1979, this hip hop star is known artistically as Yelawolf. The Gadsden, Alabama native is half white and half Cherokee, Yelawolf being a reference to his Native American roots.
Atha’s original plan in life was to be a skateboarder but several injuries forced him to retire the dream and focus on music. As a kid his family moved around a lot, and he was especially influenced by the hip hop scene in Tennessee.
Atha gained popularity on television while on “The Road to Stardom with Missy Elliot” in 2005 and released his album “Creek Water” later that year. Columbia Records picked up Atha several years later and he released the single “Kickin’.” Atha’s luck with Columbia was short-lived however and he was dropped from the label.
Under Ghet-O Vison Entertainment Atha released four mixtapes from 2008-2010, the last one called “Trunk Muzik” which attracted the attention of Interscope Records. On 22 November 2010 the album was re-released as “Trunk Muzik 0-60.”
Along with a contract with Interscope Records, Atha was also signed to Eminem’s label Shady Records in 2011. His debut album on the label was “Radioactive” which was released on 21 November 2011 after a few leaked songs were removed from the final playlist. “Radioactive” reached #27 on the Billboard 200.
Yelawolf’s most recent album “Love Story” came out in 2014 with single “Till It’s Gone” making an appearance on the television hit “Sons of Anarchy” soundtrack. Atha attributes his love for classic rock to his mother whose favorite bands 10,000 Maniacs, Led Zeppelin, REO Speedwagon and Yes inspire him in his own songwriting.
Live reviews
Had tix to see him 2 nights in a row. Second night he had a meltdown (two actually) and wouldn’t play because he was upset the show wasn’t sold out (venue was pretty full, IMHO). Trashed the stage and walked off after 10 total minutes on stage and 2 songs (and 30 minute wait in between while they rebuilt everything after his first tantrum). So my observations are from the full show that I did see.
1. he plays his songs pretty much in order of the albums, even mentioning the albums to introduce the songs that are to follow
2. Most reading this know that his first two albums were rap and the next two are some sort of country. Plays songs from Trunk Muzic and Radioactive then leaves the stage like the show is over, comes back a minute later and plays songs from the two country albums
3. Watching him spit those lyrics rapid fire in the first half of the show is an absolutely incredible thing to see live. I had chills. He’s an incredible talent
4. Plays only the first verse of many of the rap songs. So its like a bunch of mini songs, 30-45 seconds each. I mean, I guess I can kind of understand it on songs that feature another artist - like Box Chevy, he ends the song where Rittz’s verse would start. But Daddy’s Lambo has no other artists on it, and he only plays one verse.
5. Didn’t play Hard White. Thought that was his signature party anthem. That shocked me.
Back to him walking out and not playing because the show wasn’t sold out…I saw Snow tha Product in San Jose where the power went out on her about a half dozen times. Singing and dancing then, Boom complete silence as all the audio cut out. Over and over this happened! She was pissed, had harsh words for the venue, called them out on some other bullshit they said to her before the show and ultimately they called the cops on her, but…had love for the fans and gutted through the performance and played for 2 hours in shitty conditions. What a contrast. Yelawolf built his fan base on his rap music, so he’s gonna get pissed because those people don’t support his move to country music? Really, that’s a surprise to him?

I missed most of the opening act, but was pleasantly surprised that Rittz was one of the openers for Yela. I somehow missed that when I bought the tickets, but since I began liking Yela and Rittz due to a lot of their work they've done together, that was an awesome bonus to see Rittz! He did an awesome job of warming the crowd up with his high-energy/rapid flows.
The sound was very good and clean at the Granada (Lawrence, KS).
My buddy and I kept wondering throughout the openers what the large object was that was covered up in the middle of the stage (is it a bed? is it a hot-tub? what exactly was this prop and when would it be used?), but once Yela came onstage and the prop was revealed (no spoiler here) it all made sense. Yela's country sense of fashion was a little strange, but it worked for him given his small-town country roots and rock-a-billie/rap past.
Due to some of the different sounds Yela has been coming with lately (more slow songs, less fast raps lately), I actually was prepared for a letdown and didn't expect him to cover a lot of the old fan-favorites from Trunk Muzik and Radioactive.
For some reason, I expected Yela to be overly cocky and do whatever he felt like doing.
I was dead wrong.
He was a crowd pleaser, very in tune with the crowd's wants/needs, and he KILLED IT on the old Trunk Muzik/Radioactive joints as well as some new and old stuff as well. Loved the show, and was very impressed with the quality of all artists and their perforamances!
I first heard of Yelawolf from his first album Trunk Muzik 0-60, which was okay but his music got better after releasing Radioactive in 2011 when Eminem took him under his wing, his music took off.
Yelawolf has sick beats and rhymes, and all of his works is fresh. He raps with a purpose and gets his points across when he raps like a boss. I saw Yelawolf in one of his concerts in a smaller venue, the crowd loves him, hes got such great crowd interaction and gets the crowd hype.
He has that personality that keeps the crowd entertained, a true entertainer. He loves what he does, hes got the skills and he shows it on stage. He does a lot of songs for the little amount of time he plays for, he gets it all in there, gets in his talking, and does his thing, he does not stop until he is done.
I saw Yelawolf for the second time a couple of months ago. I paid for Yela just so I could see Rittz open the show, which was killer!! Yela's set was as expected...daddys lambo, pop the trunk and so forth. He sounded great but the set was a bit weaker than the first time I saw him.As it was an all ages show AGAIN!,it was waaaaaay too short in my opinion.Yela should rock the venue til close for 35 bucks!Def gonna catch Rittz next time around, but I;m probably gonna skip Yelawolf when he passes thru...unless Rittz is the opener, that dude spits fire nonstop! So, all in all yela's a good live show ,but once ya seen it there's no need to repeat cause its basically the same exact set list and show. Save your dough and use it to buy some Rittz CD'S. Dueces ya'll!
While it took a while for things to get going, they certainly got crazy once he arrived! Yelawolf is a flawless performer, and any fan of his music will love his concert. Hillbilly casino was fantastic, since, even though I don't LOVE their music, they were entertaining and energetic enough to create a memorable performance. My only two complaints are one, that the set for hillbilly casino took forever to get set up, and two, he didn't play enough music from the album, which I really wanted to hear. He played a lot of "psycho white", "trunk muzik", and not much else. Otherwise this was a great experience from a great artist.
Yelawolf was GREAT!! Will definitely go again! RITTZ was just as good. I loved the fact that, not only sis they entertain us, Yelawolf interacted with us! The entire event, from the waiting outside to the very end was memorable! More artists could learn a thing or two from them!
It was awesome to see Yelawolf bring an audience member up to perform one of his songs, move people in the crowd so those who wanted to josh could, and when he brought Teddy up to be "tossed" to the crowd to surf! It was all just so amazing!!! Definitely a one to go to for anyone!
That was the most amazing concert I've ever gone too. The balcony seats were amazing. Amazing veiw, made some new friends. I'm only 14 and all the drunk dudes up there thought it was awesome that I knew the words and hey a little self esteem boost Is great for everybody. I got this new sweatshirt so I can show off my slumerican pride and it's just awesome. I even got my dad to start listening to YelaWolf. Just a great time. The food from the restraint down stairs was great too. Chicken was bomb.
2 nights for the 2 Carolina shows! The meet and greet was way cool. I even got Cambo's number!!!!
2 difgerent sets. The energy at the Asheville shown wasinfectious. Yelawolf was a great performer! So talented and true to his music and fans!
I highly reccommend seeing a show. Well worth the time and distance to hang out and see his show!
Yelawolf was amazing but the sound system in the venue sucked even Yelawolf destroyed two microphones and threw them into the crowd comparing the sound to a Starbucks I don’t think He’ll ever play this venue again and he went through a great catalog of songs and hung in there even though I thought he would might walk off stage before the end
What tje f*^k happened? The man walked off stage after 40 minutes of GREAT performance!!! He dropped the mic and just walked out, leaving his fans with at least 9 unsung songs from the 2020 tour. He did not even perform a single song from his new album, which was kinda strange, since the tour’s name is Ghetto cowboy tour... Very disappointed!

They’ll begin their shows on July 28 in Southaven, Miss., and make stops in Virginia Beach, Las Vegas, Dallas, and Salt Lake City before finishing up in Tampa, Fla. on Oct. 14. Presale for the tour begins Wednesday (Feb. 22) at 10 a.m. followed by the normal public sale on Friday (Feb. 24) at 10 a.m. Tickets can be purchased via jellyroll615.com .

Yelawolf is appearing at...
- Mar 14, 2024 Vinoy Park St. Petersburg, FL Reggae Rise Up Florida Festival 2024 $30+ | AA | 4:00 pm GET TICKETS!
The very day Yelawolf was born, his teenage mother strapped him into a stroller and rolled him around the mall. The first week of his life, she took him to hous e parties, and by the time he left high school, the family had roamed to so many towns that Yelawolf had attended 15 different schools.
“I really never ever stopped moving,” he says while driving around Nashville, his home of the past three years. “That’s my life story in a nutshell.”
With his latest release, Love Story, perhaps he can finally downshift. Since 2010’s Trunk Muzik, his career has been on the fast track. His appearance—his tattoos include a catfish swimming down his forearm and “Heart of Dixie” stamped on his stomach—and raps about Appalachian meth dealers might’ve made him a novelty act. But his rapid-fire delivery and intense live show ensured no one considered him a joke. As Pitchfork marveled, “Yelawolf is a powerful new rap voice, one that draws from all over the map without sounding much like anyone else.” Interscope Records agreed and within three months, he had a major label deal. Later that year, the tape was re-released as Trunk Muzik 0-60, and Rolling Stone praised him as “an MC whose liquid flow breathes life into genre clichés.” In January 2011, he signed to Eminem’s Shady Records, and his fan base grew even more rabid. Yet Wolf wasn’t satisfied.
“The mullet and Three 6 Mafia. How do you make that work?” he says. “What I’ve always been trying to do is figure out how to make that into a good mixture of music.”
Yelawolf was born Michael Wayne Atha in Gadsden, Alabama, where his two musical loves grew organically. His mom dated a sound engineer, and Wolf remembers being onstage at age six with Dwight Yoakam, and Run DMC coming by his house to party after their local show when he was seven. “I woke up in this trailer park and figured out what was ironic about who I was and where I was from wasn’t that what I was experiencing was new. It was just that I recognized the extreme of it,” he says.
After being homeless in Berkeley and working on a ship off the coast of Washington state, Yelawolf landed back in the South and started making mixtapes. He was purposefully rowdy, wearing head-to-toe deer hunting camouflage and gold teeth. In Atlanta, Wolf and his friend Malay (the producer who later won a Grammy for Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange) started a “futuristic country hip-hop rock band” that included both a DJ and a black fiddle player. Their self-described “arena rap” became popular in Atlanta, pulling huge crowds as well as the attention of Lil Wayne and L.A. Reid. But their idea was ahead of its time and fizzled.
Wolf was poor, and his now ex-girlfriend and their child were still living in Gadsden. Running out of options, he returned to Alabama with producer WLPWR. “We got an 8-track recorder in the back of this shitty house in this factory neighborhood worthy of any Harmony Korine film, and we wrote Trunk Muzik front to back,” he says. He hustled back to Atlanta to record it, and the tape that set his career ablaze and resulted in his working with legends like Bun B and Big Boi was completed in all of a week and a half.
“I became that shit. I saw the power in it. [And] I felt fulfilled,” he admits. “But I always knew, ‘Wait ‘till they hear the shit I did with Malay.’”
At long last, they’re listening, and the response is as positive as he always believed it would be. Recorded entirely in Nashville’s Blackbird Studios and executively produced by Eminem, his passion project—fittingly titled Love Story—is a rootsy, country-tinged rock album brimming with strong lyricism. Finally, he’s struck the right balance.
“I’m not reinventing the wheel. It’s nothing Kid Rock hasn’t done,” he says. “But what is new is my deep appreciation for lyricism in hip hop, [my desire] to be a great lyricist. And a deep appreciation for outlaw country, for raw classic rock. I started to learn how to blend concepts together.”
Indeed he did. The album’s first single, “Till It’s Gone,” is a driving barn burner of a song elevated by Wolf’s melodically sung hook. Radio friendly without sacrificing its soul, it’s an undeniable smash that’s in line with the country’s recent obsession with the culture of rural American life. In fact, “Till It’s Gone” premiered last September on the wildly popular FX drama Sons of Anarchy.
“It might be simple, but when I decided to put down sneakers and throw on some boots … it feels like I’ve come full circle … riding Harleys with my Dad … it all makes sense, ” he says. A smile enters his voice. “It’s the biggest exhale.”

“Yelawolf and Shooter Jennings’ Sometimes Y makes rock & roll sound fresh again, by pairing the rapper’s rapid-fire lyricism with the producer’s affinity for synths and stabbing guitars.” – Rolling Stone “In the pantheon of hip-hop, few artists stand out like Yelawolf. Stylistically, [he] has worn his varied influences on his sleeve, drawing from country music, hip-hop, rock, and metal.” – Hot New Hip Hop “Yelawolf has built his Slumerican brand and earned success by staying true to his core and telling it straight, no chaser.” – Complex “[Yelawolf] delivers gripping hip-hop records dipped in rock and roll.” – VIBE “[Yelawolf’s] spitfire flow and impeccable wordplay does not go unnoticed, and his love for the art shines through with each release.” – Flaunt

Video: Yelawolf Introduces 'New Me' on Single and Music Video
The album is to stream available now.
Alabama-born and Nashville-based multiplatinum chart-topping artist, entrepreneur, and Slumerican Founder Yelawolf has just unleashed a new single and music video entitled “New Me” out now.
Close cohort WLPWR [Wiz Khalifa, Eminem, Travis Barker] notably cooked up the beat. The low-end rattles, while organ wails and horns swoon in the background (as if melding the trap and the old west for the very first time). Yelawolf gets in his bag and teases, “I got leather jackets older than you…Why you think I got all suited and booted?” He stomps over the production with intense delivery, picking up the pace and promising, “I’m’a show y’all new me.” You get to see just that in the accompanying visual. Helmed by director Patrick Tohill, he dons his finest vintage denim suit as he canvases a trailer park to spread the gospel of Slumerican. In the process, he meets all kinds of lovable freaks. You’ve got to see it to believe it…
It continues a busy season for the maverick, arriving on the heels of “Make You Love Me.” Produced by frequent collaborator and GRAMMY® Award winner Malay [Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys], the track reeled in over 672K Spotify streams and 3.2 million YouTube views on the music video .
“Make You Love Me” also garnered widespread tastemaker looks. Touted by HipHopDX and more, HotNewHipHop professed, “Yelawolf is continuing to build up excitement.” Bootleg Kev personally gave the song its broadcast premiere on his syndicated radio show, and Yelawolf sat down with him for a deep interview.
In February, Yelawolf kickstarted the current season with the hard-hitting “Everything.” The latter has already gathered north of 1.6 million YouTube views on the music video in addition to nearly 660K Spotify streams. Listen HERE and watch the video HERE .
Last fall, he initially heralded this chapter during an intimate secret listening session. SPIN professed, “One thing is immediately clear—Yelawolf never abandoned his hip-hop roots. The culture is part of his DNA, pumping through his veins and busting at the seams to get out.”
The stage is set for his much-anticipated magnum opus double-LP War Story coming very soon.
