What to Know Before Booking a National Park Trip This Summer

Additional routes in popular parks now require reservations, the annual pass gets a big change, Juneteenth is now a new free entrance day and more changes for 2024.

A deep-blue mountain creek with evergreen trees and brown grasses along its shores is in front of a towering gray mountain peak scattered with snow.

By Lauren Matison

In 2023, the seashores, lakeshores, battlefields, historic sites, monuments and more that make up the National Park Service had 325.5 million visits , an increase of 4 percent from the year before.

The National Park Service director, Charles F. Sams III, praised the surge of interest in “learning our shared American story throughout the hidden gems of the National Parks System.”

Expecting an even greater turnout in 2024, the Park Service and Recreation.gov , the booking platform for federal land reservations, have implemented new measures to streamline the park experience, manage overcrowding and safeguard the environment.

More parks are requiring reservations

To better avoid congested trails, packed parking lots and overflowing trash cans, additional parks are joining Rocky Mountain , Arches and Glacier National Parks this year in requiring day-use permits, timed entries and other reservations for travelers who wish to visit, particularly during peak hours, holidays and the parks’ high seasons. Yosemite National Park is reinstating a timed-entry system it instituted in 2020, but paused in 2022.

Many park enthusiasts expressed mixed feelings about the reservation policies, with some lamenting a lack of first-come, first-served campsites while others find comfort in knowing they have a confirmed booking. As nearly 75 percent of visitors each year descend on national parks from May to October (and often on weekends), park officials stand by the system.

“In some parks, the level of demand is exceeding the capacity for which infrastructure was designed or is outpacing the National Park Service’s ability to sustainably support visitation,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist for the service. “This trend is resulting in the need to explore new strategies to protect natural and cultural resources and provide opportunities for safe and meaningful visitor experiences.”

It can be confusing.

New to implementing timed-entry reservations for vehicles is Mount Rainier National Park , in Washington, for its popular Paradise and Sunrise Corridors during certain times in the summer season. Reservations cost $2, are valid for one day and must be purchased along with the park ticket, but do not apply for visitors with wilderness permits or camping or lodge reservations. Similar vehicle reservations are now required for certain periods for viewing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii , and driving the Cadillac Summit Road in Maine’s Acadia National Park .

Visitors wishing to hike Old Rag Mountain in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park must obtain a day-use ticket between March 1 and Nov. 30, and in Zion National Park, in Utah, hikers wishing to visit Angels Landing , the dramatic 1,488-foot-tall rock formation, also need to purchase a permit. Fees range from $1 to $6, in addition to the parks’ entrance fees.

As each destination is managed differently, check the park’s webpage for the type of reservation required. Although most bookings can be made through Recreation.gov, some sites, such as Muir Woods National Monument, use a different system.

New features on Recreation.gov

In 2023, Recreation.gov reported that more than 4 million camping reservations and 2 million timed-entry reservations were booked online, and 1.5 million permits were issued. Some 2.9 million new users signed up for the site. With its expanding user base, the booking platform has added 58 reservable national park locations — including 17 campgrounds — such as Central Avenue Walk-in Sites at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Bluff Hike In Camping in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.

Recreation.gov has also improved an alerts feature, piloted in July 2023, that can notify users through email or mobile push notifications when a sold-out campsite becomes available. After Recreation.gov notifies you of availability, you must book the campsite yourself online — and quickly, as you’ll be shown how many other people (possibly hundreds) have received the same alert.

While its customer support center and mobile app are still only available in English, Recreation.gov recently introduced a Spanish language translation option. The Park Service partners with Latino Conservation Week , which hosts nationwide hikes and events on environmental education and in-park stewardship, and will celebrate its 10th year in September.

A limit to the annual America the Beautiful pass

The 2024 America the Beautiful pass no longer allows two owners. The annual interagency pass, which costs $80 and covers the entrance fees for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites (of which roughly 100 do not charge for admission year-round), is now marked by a single signature line on the back of the card. The pass owner must show I.D. and be present with any accompanying travelers wishing to access the park with the pass. (Annual passes issued in 2023 will still be valid until their expiration date.) The pass covers all passengers in a vehicle — up to four adults, and children under 16 are admitted free — or up to four cyclists riding together. Active military or veterans and people with permanent disabilities are eligible for a free lifetime pass; 4th grade students may receive a free annual pass; and senior citizens may purchase a $20 annual pass or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

At the parks, more accessible features, E.V. chargers and new lodging

To better protect against global warming, the Park Service is putting more than $65 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and Great American Outdoors Act into climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Using $15.9 million budgeted for zero-emission vehicle deployment, charging capacity and infrastructure, the Park Service is prioritizing a reduction in carbon emissions, said Mr. Sams, by installing new electric-vehicle charging stations and running electric buses.

An interactive online locator tool created in 2023 shows E.V. charging stations throughout 27 national parks and the type of chargers available. In addition to the tool, every national park page displays alerts on road closures, parking lot capacities, construction work and other incidents.

Mr. Sams also said the Park Service is investing $1.3 billion from the Great American Outdoors Act to improve accessibility features, ranging from a new A.D.A.-compliant visitor center at Morristown National Historic Park in New Jersey to new beach wheelchairs at Sleeping Bear Dunes , Channel Islands and Virgin Islands National Parks . Each destination’s website has an accessibility tab to help visitors plan their trip, and Recreation.gov now has a search filter on its homepage to make it easier to locate accessible accommodations.

New lodging options now available across the country include the Flamingo Lodge , which opened inside Everglades National Park last fall with 24 guest rooms built from repurposed shipping containers. In March, along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Ranch reopened with 11 renovated cabins and a new restaurant. This spring, the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites will welcome its first guests in Rapid City, S.D., the closest major town to Badlands National Park , and opening in May in Idaho is the Yellowstone Peaks Hotel , a 30-minute-drive from Yellowstone National Park. This fall, California-bound travelers planning a visit to General Sherman, the largest known tree on Earth, might book at AutoCamp Sequoia , just outside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park .

Also in California: Those who don’t score a highly coveted (and contentious) spot at the newly reopened High Sierra Camps in Yosemite could book Wildhaven Yosemite in Mariposa, which offers more affordable rates, hiking trails and views of the Sierra Nevadas. Reservations for its first season are available beginning May 1.

Celebrating milestones and a new free entrance day

On the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, visitors can pay tribute to African American heritage at over 100 parks , including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument , and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail . This year also marks 100 years since Indigenous people were recognized as United States citizens. Although many parks have Indigenous programming , Mr. Sams, who is the first Native American to serve as N.P.S. director , suggested visiting Hopewell Cultural Historical Park in Ohio and Whitman Mission Historic National Historic Site in Washington, where he recently brought his daughter.

“In order to celebrate the diversity that makes our country great, we must share the complete story of America, which includes both the successes and challenges encountered on the way to form a more perfect union,” Mr. Sams said.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the National Park Service’s newest free entrance day . Visitors can also take advantage of free admission on April 20, the first day of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the four-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act ; Sept. 28 on National Public Lands Day ; and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day .

How to make the most of Passport DC’s free embassy tours

visitor tour pass

Dozens of countries from Armenia to Zambia are hosting open houses Saturday during the annual Around the World Embassy Tour , one of those “only in Washington” events you’ll tell friends and relatives about. How often do you get invited into an embassy to explore its art collection, sample traditional cuisine, and watch free music and dance performances, let alone play cornhole in the Norwegian Embassy’s garden? Here’s a guide to planning for a successful day of globe-trotting without leaving D.C. Also, many of these tips are just as helpful on May 11, when the European Union hosts its annual E.U. Open House embassy tours.

  • Because the event is popular, lines are common, and they get longer at some of the better-known locations, such as the Korean Cultural Center at the South Korean Embassy, or the embassies of the United Kingdom, Jamaica and Thailand. If there’s a particular embassy you must visit, get there before doors open at 10 a.m. to improve your chances of getting in.
  • If you’re trying to visit a variety of embassies, pick a particular neighborhood to explore — maybe Massachusetts Avenue near Scott Circle, the string of embassies on Massachusetts northwest of Sheridan Circle, or the embassies dotted among the streets of Kalorama — and research the participants within a few blocks. That way, if you get tired of waiting outside one embassy, you can head to another, preferably smaller, destination nearby. Also, as veteran Around the World-ers will tell you, the embassies clustered around International Drive and International Court in Van Ness — China, Bangladesh, Egypt, etc. — are closer together and can be easier to get into than the ones on Embassy Row.
  • You don’t even have to go indoors to get a taste of a country: Some embassies offer outdoor live music, dance performances or, in the case of China, lion dances to entertain the crowds waiting to enter their buildings.
  • If you go to a busy neighborhood, try starting at the embassies that are farthest from the Metro station — people have a tendency to stop and get in line at the first embassy they pass. Walk past them, then work your way back.
  • For serious explorers, this is a good weekend to skip brunch. Participating embassies and cultural centers are open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and lines get longer as the day goes on. An early start will help you make it to the most locations — getting to five or six is a solid day of sightseeing.
  • Even if you plan well, you might be able to avoid lines at only a handful of embassies. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a phone charger and a book, just in case.
  • Carry cash or a credit card. While many embassies offer free samples of food or drinks, some also charge. Last year, the Embassy of Barbados handed out free sweets and had a chef preparing traditional Barbadian dishes as a teaser for the upcoming Barbados Food and Rum Festival. Everyone sitting on a chair in the embassy’s front garden watching the cooking demo got a two-bite hors d’oeuvre. But in the parking lot behind the embassy, there was a party raging: The ambassador was hanging out next to a DJ spinning upbeat carnival songs; a bar served potent rum punches ($6 each) and beer ($4); and a team of cooks was dishing up flying fish with rice and beans, oxtail platters, barbecued pig tails, and macaroni pie (main dishes $15-$35 with sides, smaller plates $1-$10). While the Barbados Association of Washington did have a credit card reader, that’s not true of every embassy we’ve been to.
  • Some embassies have marketplaces with art or textiles from native artisans. The Embassy of Kenya transformed the forecourt of its building into a showcase of baskets, clothing and jewelry; Ukraine House, the Ukrainian cultural center, had traditional Ukrainian fashions, nesting dolls and accessories for sale on tables in its garden.
  • Related: Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, grab the first free tote bag you see, because you’ll pick up plenty of tchotchkes, pamphlets and other gifts throughout the day.
  • Don’t be shy about asking what you’re in line for. The Dominican Republic hosted a veritable street party last year, with a DJ on its front porch and people dancing in the road. Depending on which way you approached the building, though, there were two very different lines: One was to access the indoor embassy tour, and the other was to purchase food and a rum tasting. You don’t want to get to the front of the line to find out you’ve spent 20 minutes waiting for the wrong thing.
  • Bigger isn’t always better. Some of the more popular embassies can be so crowded that you don’t really feel like you’re learning anything about the country. At an off-the-beaten-path embassy, such as the Embassy of Gabon, you have a better chance of getting face time with a staffer who can talk about the cultural uses of elaborate masks on display, or explain how national parks cover more than 10 percent of the country. (That’s about three times the percentage in the United States.)

The Around the World Embassy Tour is part of the month-long Passport DC program, and souvenir passports are available from booths near the Dupont Circle and Van Ness Metro stations; at the Mexican Cultural Institute ; and at the International City Food Festival , held at the Square food hall. Visitors can collect stamps while visiting embassies and cultural centers, though there’s no reward for filling the book.

Do TourPass tours require reservations?

Featured Tours: Most require reservations which can easily be made on the Mobile Pass you receive after purchase. Reservations are automated. TourPass connects to the tour company’s reservation system.

Watch the demo videos at the top of this page to see how easy reservations are made.

To view tour availability on the days you want to tour visit this page .

Standard Tours: Do not require reservations. Simply present your pass upon entry and pay zero admission fees.

Can I purchase now and use later?

Absolutely and we encourage this scenario since purchasing in advance will allow you to fully research and plan your vacation.

After purchase, when your ready, simply activate your pass for when you’ll be visiting and begin making reservations for that future date (can be today, tomorrow or months away).

How Are Active Days Counted? (Per day or per 24-hour period)

Days are counted as a calendar day and not per 24-hour period. It’s best to begin your day in the morning. If you check-in or make reservations on a particular day, that day will be active. If you do not then that day will not activate.

Non-consecutive Day Use (Applies to multi-day passes only)

FOR MULTI-DAY PASSES (2, 3, 4 or 5-day passes):

  • Your pass is good for the number of days purchased (2, 3, 4 or 5-days). You will have 10-day window after activation to use your number of days purchased.
  • Days don’t have to be used consecutively.
  • Your pass is not valid for 10-days…only the number of days you purchased!  You have a 10-day window to use your 2, 3, 4 or 5-day pass after activation, not a 10-day pass
  • Visits for everything must occur during your active days. Purchase a 2-day pass, all Featured and Standard/Walk-in attractions must be visited within 2-days.

Is This Just a Discount Card? (No, Admission is Included)

TourPass is NOT a discount card and includes full admission to whatever attractions you choose.

Difference Between Featured and Standard Tours?

It’s simple…

  • Such as carriage, harbor, bus and walking tours.
  • Such as museums, parks, historical sites, wineries and restaurants.

Tour Pass Tour Selection Grid 5 days

How Many Featured Tours Do I Receive? (Dependant on # of day pass purchased)

The number of featured tour reservations allowed per person is determined by the duration of the pass you purchase. See table below:

For example: Purchased a 2-day pass (includes 3 feature tours).

  • 2 people x 3 feature tours = 6 total feature tour reservations.
  • If both people select the same tour….that would use 2 of the 6 feature tour reservations on their pass.

What If All Featured Tours Are Booked?

Before purchase you can search tour availability before you purchase TourPass. If there is no availability after you purchase we can issue a refund. Click the link below:

Featured Tour Availability Search

Can I Book Featured Tours Before Arriving? (Yes)

Yes. After you complete your purchase of TourPass, you will then choose the activation date which can be the same day or six months from now. You can then reserve or make reservations for dates that are on or after the activation date chosen. Watch the Mobile Pass Demo video at the top of this page.

Can I Visit a Tour More Than 1x?

Tours are designed to be visited 1x for the entirety of your pass. If for instance you’d like to do the Hop on Hop Off Trolley (Savannah + St. Augustine), then you could check-in on a second day which would use another of your featured tours.

Standard Tours can only be checked into 1x per person for the entirety of your pass.

How Many People Can Be On One Pass? (Unlimited)

  • Each person needs to pay either an adult or child pass price unless you have a child 2 years of age or younger.
  • You can purchase one pass can have up to 20 adults and 20 children per pass. Call if you’ll have more than this and we can accomodate.
  • A family for instance would purchase one pass, add 2 adults and 2 children all on one pass, which can be presented at each attraction where they check everyone on the pass in at once. No need to fumble with printed tickets…TourPass is very simple to use.

If you have a large group then please visit our  Group Sales page

How long is my pass good for (the # of days your purchased it for).

  • After purchase, you have up to 12 months to use your pass.
  • After you choose the activation date. you have a 10-day window to use your  active days.
  • Your pass is not active for 10-days. See example below.
  • For instance, if you purchase a 3-day pass and activate it on October 1st (active day #1), take a few days off, resume touring on October 5th (active day #2), take a day off and use your last day on October 7th (active day #3…pass expires at Midnight). Pass features such as the map and landmarks locations will still work until October 10th although you won’t be allowed entry to attractions.

Mobile Pass How it Works

How does the Mobile Pass work?

  • A smartphone is required with an internet connection or data plan. Watch the Mobile Pass demo video at the top of this page.
  • After purchase we provide instructions to download our app to your phone along with your unique pass ID which will link your information to your app.
  • The Tour Pass app is connected to the Tour Vendor’s booking calendars via API so when you make a Featured reservation, it appears on the Vendor’s calendar automatically.

How to choose an activation date? (It's done after purchase on the Mobile Pass)

  • Instantly after purchase, our system will send you a text message and an email containing your unique pass ID number.
  • Download and then open the Tour Pass app, enter your unique pass ID number, then you can choose your activation dates.
  • You can select an activation date which could be set for today or 3 months from today.
  • Once set, your pass will then allow you to make reservations for your active days.
  • Days are counted per calendar day and not per 24-hour period.

Making reservations, how's it done?

Once you choose an activation date, the app will allow you to make advance reservations for when you made your pass active.

Watch this video which explains and demonstrates how to make a Featured Tour reservation:

Can I send my TourPass to others? (yes, view for restrictions)

If you purchase a pass for your group…for instance a 2-day pass for 4 people, you can send your pass to all people in your group. Doing so is great for groups or families that want to visit different attractions from others in the group.

Each attraction can only be visited 1x per person on the pass. TourPass can be purchased for multiple persons. For instance, one tour pass can be purchased for up to 30 adults and 30 children on one pass.

Read explanation below.

Attractions are required to check Tour Pass users in upon entry. When you present your mobile pass to participating attractions they will ask for your unique Pass ID number which can be viewed upon opening your mobile pass. The attraction will check-in however many people are present. If for example your pass were purchased for 2 adults and they check-in 2 adults, then that attraction will not allow re-entry in the future since each attraction can only be visited one time per person.

Example: Multiple Persons on One Pass: When Sending to Others Makes Sense:

  • In this example the Parents purchased one 3-day Tour Pass for four adults.
  • They are taking their Daughter and Son-in-Law on vacation and wanted to pay for the TourPass.
  • The Parents could send or share their unique pass ID with their Daughter. They could download the app and enter the shared pass ID into their app.
  • The Parents could do what they want to do while their Daughter and Son-in-Law could also visit separate attractions they want to see at the same time.
  • The Parents could visit a Museum which would only check-in 2 of 4 available adults on that pass which would allow their Daughter and Son-in-Law to visit the same Museum at a later time….even on a different day.
  • They could meet-up for lunch….then split-up again and so forth.
  • Tour Pass is very flexible.

Inside Priority Pass' most highly rated lounge

Jordan Waller

Last month, the 2024 Priority Pass Excellence Awards revealed the best-rated lounges in the world. It crowned the excellent Vienna Lounge in Terminal 1 at Vienna Airport (VIE) as the overall winner.

The awards, which TPG attended, showcase the highest-rated lounges across the Priority Pass network. They dish out accolades based on the reviews and recommendations of its 379,966 members.

Related: Here are the best-rated Priority Pass lounges in 2024

Every lounge is judged across various criteria, including its facilities, customer service, food, drinks and overall satisfaction. This year saw the Vienna Lounge triumph over all other Priority Pass lounges to be crowned both the European winner and the global winner.

Here's a rundown of everything you need to know about the lounge and what to expect when you visit.

It has an incredibly impressive art collection

The most notable element of the Vienna Lounge is its fantastic art collection, which is provided by Vienna's esteemed Leopold Museum. You'll find eye-catching works by famed Austrian artists Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele on display throughout the lounge.

visitor tour pass

The Leopold Museum has been incredibly generous with the amount of pieces donated to the lounge, and you'll find something new and unique around every corner. If you're an art lover, it's wonderfully surreal to be able to view these works up close without the usual crowds of an art gallery.

The pieces add a unique flair to the lounge, making it stand out from any other Priority Pass lounge I've personally visited.

Related: 5 ways to ensure you have lounge access before your next flight

The stylish and varied space is ideal for relaxing

While the lounge also has designated work areas and seating with power outlets (more on those below), it prioritizes space for travelers to unwind before catching a fight.

visitor tour pass

It's a sprawling lounge covering more than 2,500 square meters (26,910 square feet) and can comfortably host about 450 guests.

visitor tour pass

On the day I visited, the lounge wasn't quite at capacity but was much busier than usual due to several major airlines delaying flights. Lounge staff informed me that this is quite unusual and the lounge is often much quieter. Even so, the extra bodies didn't spoil my visit, and I could still find space to work and relax.

There's a great mix of seating throughout the lounge, ranging from small single tables with mint chairs and open-booth-style cushioned seating to leather sofas and armchairs.

visitor tour pass

The entire space is bright and airy. If you're an AvGeek, you'll love the lounge's floor-to-ceiling windows, which offer panoramic views of the airport's runways; comfortable armchairs give you prime spots for planespotting.

visitor tour pass

The space is broadly separated into dining areas around the food stations, quieter window seating, a workspace and media center, and a more peaceful sofa area perfect for a quick snooze or a space to read.

For parents traveling with children, a small kids area also sits near the bustling dining area.

The bathrooms were some of the cleanest airport lounge bathrooms I've ever stepped in. Showers, with hairdryers and luggage storage lockers, are also available should you need them.

visitor tour pass

Compared to most other Priority Pass lounges I've visited, the Vienna Lounge has a much more luxurious feel akin to a premium airline's dedicated lounge.

There are delicious cakes and Viennese dishes

While the lounge doesn't have an a la carte dining experience, it offers a commendably large buffet with both hot and cold options. The buffet comprises elevated plates of cold cuts, a salad bar, hearty hot dishes and various baked goods.

visitor tour pass

During my visit, I could choose from broccoli cheese medallions, a farmers salad couscous and a paella-style seafood rice dish. (I went for the medallions and couscous, which were both delicious.)

Sweet main dishes, including poppy seed dumplings with stewed sour cherries, were also available.

visitor tour pass

Note: It's important to fully read the signage here. The sweet dishes were dangerously close to the savory options, and I can exclusively reveal that sweet poppy seed dumplings do not mix well with couscous or broccoli cheese medallions. Weird food combos? I am guilty and regretful, your honor.

However, the absolute jewel in the crown must go to the Viennese cafe area; it offers coffee machines and an array of delicious and decadent cakes and strudels baked fresh daily.

visitor tour pass

Keep in mind that this area is popular, so even though it gets regularly restocked, the cakes tend to go fast.

visitor tour pass

On the drinks side of things, there's a centralized island stocked with self-serve spirits, Austrian beers and wines, and a bloody mary station — a bonus. For nonalcoholic options, choose from a variety of soft drinks and flavor-infused water.

visitor tour pass

Overall, the selection was great, and I'd say the cakes alone make visiting the lounge worthwhile.

Multiple work areas are available

visitor tour pass

Nestled in the far side of the lounge, you'll find quieter work areas alongside a media center with three screens showing rolling news. In front of the screens are high chairs and desks with power outlets; there's additional sofa seating directly in front.

visitor tour pass

For those wishing for a more secluded spot to work, there is also a more segregated work area with porthole-style windows and inspirational artwork hanging on the walls.

While still a relatively stylish space, it felt a little bland and corporate compared to the rest of the lounge, but I guess that's the point. It's a shame that the space couldn't have been designed to have a little more natural light like everywhere else in the lounge.

There's an outdoor terrace with runway views

Finally, in what's generally a rarity across most lounges — let alone a Priority Pass lounge — the Vienna Lounge offers a small sheltered terrace overlooking the runway. It is an ideal spot for AvGeeks, with a few seats and small high tables for guests. While the sky was overcast during my visit, I imagine the views are quite spectacular when the sun is shining.

visitor tour pass

One thing to note is that the terrace is also a smoking zone. If you're averse to this, it might not be the most comfortable area of the lounge. This isn't to say it was a complete smoke cloud, but plenty of patrons were either vaping, chomping down on thick cigars or smoking regular cigarettes.

How to visit the Vienna Lounge

The Vienna Lounge can be found in Terminal 1 just a short stroll past security. Priority Pass members can access the lounge for free along with a guest. Nonmembers can access the Vienna Lounge for up to three hours for a paid fee — 49 euros ($52) for adults and 29 euros ($31) for children.

If you don't benefit from complimentary access, you also have the option of purchasing a Priority Pass membership here , with annual fees starting at $99.

The membership options break down as follows:

  • Standard membership: $99 per year; includes visits for $35 each for the member and any guests
  • Standard Plus membership: $329 per year; includes 10 free visits, with subsequent visits for $35 each (the same price as all guest visits)
  • Prestige membership: $469 per year; includes all visits for the member, though guests are charged $35 per visit

Credit cards that offer Priority Pass Select memberships

There are multiple credit cards through which you can get a Priority Pass Select membership, including premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , The Platinum Card® from American Express (enrollment required) and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , the latter of which even covers two guests. Select hotel credit cards like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card (enrollment required) also include a Priority Pass Select membership as a card benefit.

Bottom line

The Vienna Lounge in Terminal 1 of Vienna Airport claimed the top spot overall and within Europe in this year's Priority Pass Excellence Awards. This makes it the current jewel in the crown of the Priority Pass network, and we'd say it's well worth a visit if you enjoy runway views, fine art and extremely tasty cake selections.

College decision day passes many students by as financial aid delays linger

University Students Walking In Campus

May 1 is usually when high school seniors start flaunting T-shirts and hats from the colleges they’ll be attending in the fall.

But decision day is looking more muted this year, the result of a scrambled financial aid application process that has pushed some enrollment deadlines well past Memorial Day.

Christy Loop Dervishi, a teacher in Washington, D.C., said she filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as FAFSA, for her son in January. But the error-ridden overhaul of this year’s application has gummed things up for millions of students, including her son, Rias. Dervishi said she was recently told his form had been flagged for corrections and would need reprocessing.

Rias, 18, applied to five schools, got into three, and narrowed his choices to two: James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and the University of South Carolina, Columbia.

He hasn’t been offered any merit-based awards at James Madison but is still awaiting potential need-based aid, Dervishi said. So far, he has received two merit scholarships from USC Columbia and expects a roughly $2,000 federal Pell Grant, but he has yet to hear a final figure.

“Without knowing, he doesn’t know which school is more affordable,” Dervishi said via email. Fortunately, both schools have given Rias more time to make a final decision.

“There are others in much worse situations than my son,” she added. “It’s heartbreaking for some children.”

While higher-education officials across the country have been trying to accommodate applicants affected by the delays, many households are already making tough choices , NBC News has reported. Some have ditched dream schools for cheaper ones or rearranged their finances to afford pricey institutions whose total costs were up in the air much longer than expected.

Because FAFSA information is a prerequisite for many other forms of aid, the series of glitches and errors that plagued the system since its December rollout into this spring has held up many campus officials’ efforts to assemble their own financial packages for admitted students.

And that’s for those who’ve managed to submit their FAFSAs to begin with. Form completions were down by almost 30% year-over-year through April 19, according to the National College Attainment Network.

But decision day isn’t a bust for everyone, and the FAFSA situation is improving. Some families who had faced uncertainty are now getting the funding information they need to make decisions.

Kerri Harrelson, a single mother and infant/toddler developmental specialist in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, said her daughter has finally started receiving financial aid offers. Bricelyn, 18, wasted no time in committing to her top choice, Iowa State University, after it recently offered her a full package that included need-based aid.

“She is excited about her future!” Harrelson said, sounding relieved after speaking with NBC News a month ago . At the time, Bricelyn had just finished blasting out a second batch of applications to cheaper state schools, fearing she might not be able to afford those she’d initially applied to with much of her aid information still unknown.

Bricelyn Harrelson.

The Education Department has nearly finished working through its backlog, and “students who complete a FAFSA today can expect their records to be sent to colleges within one to three days,” Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal told reporters Tuesday.

Officials have received over 8.4 million FAFSA submissions and processed more than 8.3 million, he said. They have also processed almost 1 million corrections for issues like missing signatures or IRS tax data authorizations.

Reprocessing forms affected by two previously announced system issues “should enable all institutions to package aid offers,” agency officials said Monday . And a glitch that had prevented some applicants without Social Security numbers from completing FAFSAs is also being resolved, Kvaal said.

Any schools that had opted to wait for all accurate information before sending financial aid packages to prospective students can now do so, the department said Monday.

Federal authorities are reaching out to 700 high school superintendents nationwide to encourage families to finish incomplete FAFSA applications. “If you have been waiting for the dust to settle, now is the time to come in and complete your FAFSA,” a senior department official said on Tuesday’s press call.

The efforts come as the department faces growing pressure on Capitol Hill. Senators rebuked Education Secretary Miguel Cardona during an appropriations subcommittee hearing Tuesday. “What happened with the FAFSA system is simply inexcusable and inexplicable,” Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said.

Cardona acknowledged the problems. “Our kids deserve better, and we are working around the clock to make sure it improves,” he said.

Last week the head of the Federal Student Aid office that administers FAFSA announced he would step down at the end of June.

The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, a network that has sharply criticized the Department of Education over this year’s FAFSA process, applauded its momentum in clearing up roadblocks.

“We are pleased to see the Department make forward progress on its timeline to provide accurate student FAFSA information to colleges and universities, so they can complete the work of packaging and delivering financial aid offers to students,” the association’s president and CEO, Justin Draeger, said in a statement Tuesday.

Lauren Boebert Gets The ‘Beetlejuice’ Treatment During Campus Protest Visit

Lee Moran

Reporter, HuffPost

visitor tour pass

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) received an embarrassing reminder during her visit on Wednesday to an encampment set up by George Washington University students who are protesting Israel’s war in Gaza.

The far-right congresswoman was greeted with chants of “Beetlejuice,” a clear reference to her booting from a Denver theater in September for vaping and groping her then-date during a performance of the hit musical.

Rep. Lauren Boebert used a bullhorn during a press conference at the George Washington University Gaza encampment. Hundreds of students opposed to the far-right Republicans who visited the camp chanted over and frequently drowned out the members of Congress.

Someone also stood behind Boebert with a sign bearing the production’s name as she addressed protesters via a bullhorn.

Boebert toured the encampment with other Republican lawmakers. She accused the protesters of being “very disrespectful” to their fellow students and threatened that Congress could cut the school’s funding.

At another point during Boebert’s visit, she unsuccessfully tried to rip down a Palestinian flag that had been put on a statue of George Washington.

She said in footage that went viral on X, formerly Twitter, “This is America, and that shit needs to come down.”
