The Hunter Valley’s best wineries & cellar doors

With more than 150 wineries in the hunter valley, it could take a lifetime to get to know them all. plan a trip to australia’s oldest wine region to meet the passionate winemakers, sample world-famous vintages and sip semillon in the sun..

Destination NSW

Hunter Valley Wine Region

The first grape vines were planted in the rich soil of the Hunter Valley in the 1820s and today it is the largest wine region in NSW. A warm climate means the grapes can ripen fully on the vine, creating fruity, full-bodied wines. Semillon is the Hunter Valley’s signature variety, a classic white with intense yet refined flavours, refreshing acidity, and notes of citrus and apple. It’s also famous for its shiraz, a rich, bold red that’s made from some of the oldest vines in the world.

Countryside - Hunter Valley

Hunter chardonnay is having a moment in the sun, winning a number of prestigious Australian and international competitions in recent years. Verdelho is increasingly popular, a fresh and uncomplicated white that’s been described as fruit salad in a glass. Along with excellent cabernet sauvignon, many wineries are producing red varietals like tempranillo and sangiovese. And, of course, a glass of crisp, cold Hunter Valley sparkling is impossible to resist.

There are three distinct regions within the Hunter Valley: Pokolbin, Lovedale and Broke-Fordwich. Thanks to the varying soils and microclimates, each produces its own distinct wines, and all offer a different cellar-door experience. If you’re not sure where to start, a wine tour led by local experts is a great option. Try Dave’s Tours , Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Tours , Hunter Valley Wine Tours , Grape to Glass or Ted’s Tours .

Pokolbin has been the centre of the Hunter Valley wine region from the very start. By the end of the 19th century some of the wine industry’s most famous families – like Tyrell, Tulloch, Drayton, Wilkinson and Lindeman – had established their vineyards in the area. It still has the highest concentration of wineries of anywhere in the valley, as well as a sprinkling of hotels, restaurants and cafes.

Tulloch Wines near Pokolbin, Hunter Valley

Start your wine journey with a tour of the old guard. At Tyrrell’s Wines you can see some of the oldest still-producing vines in the world and taste their famous Vat 1 Semillon. Tulloch Wines is known for its shiraz and has a very family-friendly cellar door, with fun non-alcoholic tastings for teens and kids. Set atop a hill and with a 360-degree view of the vineyards below, Audrey Wilkinson is one of the prettiest cellar doors in the Hunter – set up a picnic on the grass to soak it all in.  McGuigan Wines has been a family operation for four generations and more than 100 years. After your tasting, personalise a bottle of your favourite with the engraving machine.

At some wineries, the cellar door building is as interesting as the wines. Brokenwood Wines' $8 million state-of-the-art cellar door has a large tasting room, outdoor terrace, two restaurants, private dining and tasting areas, a wine museum and a lounge area where you can sit with a glass of Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz. Mount Pleasant marked its centenary in 2021 and the cellar door is inside the original homestead building, which has been spectacularly reimagined by famed architect Luchetti Krelle. The cellar door of Gundog Estate is inside the historic Pokolbin School House, where they pour boutique batches of resiling, semillon and shiraz.

Fans of dessert wine should head to the stone-fronted cellar door of De Bortoli , known for its Noble One Botrytis Semillon. Drayton’s Family Wines is also known for its sweet fortified wines, port and wine liqueurs. For sparkling, visit Peterson House where the bubbles come in white, blush and red. The striking bell tower of Bimbadgen’s cellar door, perched high on a hill, is instantly recognisable. Inside, you’ll also recognise their sparkling, chardonnay and semillon. If you want to learn about the full grape-to-glass journey, book an immersive two-hour experience at Glandore Estate .

Keith Tulloch Wine is the first carbon-neutral winery in the Hunter Valley. Follow a tasting with lunch at one-hat Muse Kitchen or a sweet treat from Cocoa Nib , both onsite. Tamburlaine produces organic, sustainable, vegan-friendly, low or no-sulphur wines, while De Iuliis also has a strong focus on sustainability when producing their small-batch vintages. Harkham Wines is another sustainable winery and no herbicides or pesticides are used on the fruit. They also take a minimal-intervention approach to their wines, which are made with no chemical additions, flavour adjustments, filtration or fining.

Wine House is a good place to kick off your visit to the valley, offering tastings from many leading wineries, mystery wine flights or wines by the glass. Hope Estate is a one-stop-shop for everything that’s good about the Hunter Valley – wine, beer, spirits, food and music. Taste their single vineyard wines, beers from Hope Brewery , vodka or gin from Hope Distillery, or watch a concert in the huge outdoor amphitheatre. For something a bit different, visit Vamp by Lisa McGuigan Wines , a slick tasting room that brings together wine, art, music, fashion and food. Grab a glass and wander along the new Hunter Valley Sculpture Walk that starts just outside.

There are many more popular cellar doors around Pokolbin, including  Tintilla Estate ,  Lake’s Folly ,  Pooles Rock ,  Scarborough Wine Co ,  Ben Ean (formerly Lindeman Estate),  Usher Tinkler Wines ,  Hungerford Hill ,  Tempus Two  and  Thomas Wines .

Lovedale is the place to discover boutique, family-run wineries without the crowds. Cellar doors are small and intimate, and you’ll often be able to chat to the winemakers or growers about their latest vintage. At Gartelmann Wines you can have breakfast at the excellent Deck Cafe then get straight into wine tasting at the adjacent cellar door. All the wines here are named after members of the family and the Brittany’s Blanc de Blancs sparkling is a nice way to start the day.

Capercaillie Wines celebrates the Scottish heritage of its founder in the name of the winery and of many of the wines, like the Ghillie Shiraz and the Angus Durif. Saltire Estate is another winery with a proud Scottish connection – Saltire is the name for the flag of Scotland. Visit the cellar door for a tasting, a picnic on the lawn or just to meet the resident wine dog, Max the miniature schnauzer. The vines at de Capel were hand planted in 2008 and today every grape is hand picked to make their single variety shiraz, chardonnay and semillon.

Domaine de Binet produces interesting varieties and blends you won’t find anywhere else in the Hunter Valley, like the popular Le Crazy Coq, a blend of semillon, reisling and gewurztraminer. At Wandin Estate , the beautiful gardens are incorporated into the delicate flowers that grace the labels. The onsite restaurant Wandin Kitchen uses fresh produce from the kitchen garden in its seasonal dishes as well. Time your last stop of the day for sunset at Allandale Winery where you can watch the sun sink behind the Brokenback Range with a glass of chardonnay or ros é in hand.

Other popular cellar doors in Lovedale include:  Stomp! Wines ,  Lucy’s Run ,  Tatler Wines ,  Thirsty Palette Wines ,  St Clement’s Estate  and  Adina Vineyard .

Broke-Fordwich

Centred around the tiny village of Broke at the foothills of the Brokenback Range is the Broke-Fordwich wine region. This is a true slice of country life, where family-run wineries sit alongside rolling farmland, olive groves and pretty mountain vistas. There are around a dozen wineries in the region, all within just a few kilometres of each other. Krinklewood Biodynamic Winery is a good place to begin, a pretty piece of Provence transported to the Hunter Valley. Every aspect of the winery is holistic, organic and sustainable, resulting in healthy soils and delicious wines.

Margan is one of the Hunter Valley's most famous wineries. It’s home to sustainably-farmed vineyards, a rammed earth cellar door, extensive kitchen garden and orchard, and the hatted Margan Restaurant. At Winmark Wines the owners are as passionate about art as they are about wine. There’s a huge outdoor sculpture park , a contemporary art gallery and some very good chardonnay. The cellar door at Mount Broke Wines is set inside an old dairy and has incredible views. They also serve lunch on the weekend and run a pizza and wine bar on Friday nights.

Whispering Brook produces both wine and olives, and its annual Olive Long Table Lunch is one of the Hunter’s most memorable events. Six shipping containers make up the unique cellar door at Running Horse Wines , and they look out over the stables and animals that give the winery its name. Talits Estate is another vineyard that feels distinctly French, with an authentic stone farmhouse, lavender gardens and olive groves. Taste the French-inspired wines in the glamorous cellar door.

Self-Guided Wine Tour of Hunters Valley

  • March 11, 2023

Self-Guided Wine Tour of Hunters Valley

Australian wines were first produced in the Hunter Valley. It is renowned across the world as a gourmet vacation and is known for its beautiful varietals of Semillon and shiraz. Over 150 cellar doors and an increasing number of cutting-edge eateries provide options for indulgence throughout the entire region. Due to its long history of farming, you can have an amazing paddock to plate and biodynamic experiences, which will make your gourmet delights even more satisfying. Take in the natural splendor of the area around your sampling, relax in one of the many-day spas, or sing along to music between the vines. It should come as no surprise that the Hunter knows a thing or two about making delectable drops as Australia’s longest-growing wine region. There are 150 cellar doors to pick from; hop between them and enjoy their renowned Shiraz and Semillon selections.

The Hunter Valley’s location inland and proximity to mountains cause its weather to generally differ from that of New South Wales’ coastal regions. Four separate seasons result from this, and while summertime temperatures may be higher than along the coast, they tend to drop at night and become drier. The warmer summer months generally last from December to February. During this period, daytime highs can reach the 30s (°C), yet nighttime lows remain pleasant. Although the harvest and general activity make summers enjoyable, keep in mind that it is also the wettest season in Hunter Valley.

What is the Overview of Hunters Valley?

Australia’s Hunter Valley is a wine-producing region. It was one of the first wine-producing districts in Australia, and it is situated in the state of New South Wales. Along with Hunter Valley Sémillon, the area also makes wine from Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Verdelho. The entire basin of the Hunter River and its tributaries is covered by the Hunter Valley zone Australian Geographical Indication (GI) under Australia’s wine appellation system. With the exception of the urban center of Newcastle and the neighboring coastal regions, several national parks, and any territory that was in the Mudgee Shire, the Hunter region is virtually as vast within that and contains the majority of the wine-producing districts (at the western heights of the catchment).

On a Hunter Valley Tour, the region is more than just a place to go “wine hunting.” Well, the majority of it is focused on wine and vineyard tastings. However, there are more factors that make this NSW location worthwhile traveling to. Every traveler will find something here in the valley. You only need to determine why you want to bring your bags on a day excursion to this location. Here are a few reasons why you should travel to the area in case you are still unsure. The region has some of the oldest wineries in Australia, the world’s best Semillon wines are produced here, and it is one of the places near Sydney for hot air balloon rides. There are numerous restaurants with amazing foods and you will get to learn much about Aboriginal history.

What is the Best Time to Visit Hunters Valley?

The Hunter Valley region celebrates autumn from March to May. With great temperatures and little rain, it is the ideal time of year to explore the Valley. The countryside is painted in tones of orange, yellow, green, and brown because it is post-harvest. Consequently, it is a photographer’s dream.

What is the History of Hunters Valley?

The location was accidentally discovered in 1797 by Lieutenant John Shortland while looking for fugitive convicts. He was the first European to do so. The Hunter Valley was initially developed as a coal and timber supply for Sydney and the areas around it. The first overland route to the Hunter was discovered by John Howe in 1820, and in 1823 a road was built mostly along his route from Windsor to Singleton. The pioneer of the path is honored in Howe’s Valley, on the northernmost portion of present-day Putty Road. The Hunter Region became accessible to free settlers through overland travel, and agricultural and pastoral pursuits quickly overtook timber and mining in economic importance. It was at this time, in the early 1920s, that wine grape were first brought to the valley. George Wyndham, William Kelman, and James King were among the early pioneers in the lengthy history of winemaking in the Hunter Valley. On the northern banks of the river and in what is now the Dalwood/Gresford district between Singleton and Maitland, about 20 acres of grapes had already been planted by 1823.

The Pokolbin region established a reputation for producing high-quality wine by 1930. The Hunter Valley’s standing in Sydney and Melbourne was improved by a number of skilled winemakers. The prominent families of the Hunter Valley, some of whom have lived there for six generations, have also significantly influenced the region’s present state. Due to the economy and war, vineyard activity declined in the Hunter Valley from the late 1930s to the 1960s. These years of adversity produced some of the best Hunter Valley wines that can be found today.

The Hunter Valley has produced many superb, internationally renowned wines since its founding, making it one of Australia’s most well-known wine areas today. More than 120 wineries produce a variety of superb wines that are true to their place of origin.

What are the Subregions of Hunters Valley?

The Hunter Valley region consists of the subregions of Upper Hunter Valley, Broke Fordwich, and Pokolbin. It is located northwest of Newcastle, New South Wales, and enjoys a warm, humid environment.

What are the Best Wine Grapes Grown In Hunters Valley?

Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Verdelho are just a few of the grape varietals and wine flavors produced throughout the Valley, but Semillon is often regarded as the most recognizable.

What are the Historical Sites in Hunters Valley?

  • Maitland Gaol

East Maitland, New South Wales is home to the Maitland Gaol, often referred to as Maitland Correctional Center, a former Australian prison that has been recognized as a national historic site. Prisoners initially entered the jail in 1848 after building on it began in 1844.

  • Poppet Head Park

Poppet Head Park is a Regional Park in the Cessnock local government area and is situated 5 kilometers south of the town of Cessnock. The iconic Poppet Head from Kitchener’s Aberdare Central Colliery is on display at this location. A legacy of the area’s mining past, the dam next to the park and Poppet Head is now a haven for a variety of animals, including mallards, black swans, native wood ducks, and red bills. This park is a fantastic picnic spot full of history and entertainment for people of all ages.

What are the Best Wineries in Hunters Valley?

  • Scarborough Wine Co.

The Hunter Valley is marketed as a family-friendly vacation spot by Scarborough Wine Co. Cellar Door, which does an excellent job of refuting that claim. Parents enjoy toasting their good fortune that their kids are happily playing gigantic Jenga, chess, and kicking a ball around in the sun-drenched tasting area at Scarborough Wine Co.

Although the seven-hectare property owned by Daniel and Jane Maroulis dates back to 1826, Boydell’s is a relatively recent boutique brand in the Hunter. Shiraz, pinot noir, merlot, Verdelho, and Chardonnay occupy hectares of the modest vineyard in East Gresford, close to Maitland. At the cellar door located in an ancient slab hut in Morpeth, or at Boydell’s rustic restaurant next door, where the complete complement of wines can be added to your order, find out which wines best fit your palate.

  • Briar Ridge

Briar Ridge

Briar Ridge Photo

If Steven Pike, cellar door manager, is available to guide you through a wine tasting at this illustrious Hunter Valley estate, consider yourself lucky. Steven’s playlist (and musical knowledge) are both motivated by his palpable passion and enthusiasm for displaying Briar Ridge wines. Additionally, the site is really alluring. As you gaze out over the patchwork-like panorama of rolling hills, you will feel your shoulders relax.

Where Should I Eat in Hunters Valley?

  • Fawk Foods Kitchen & Bakery

Frank Fawkner, the executive chef at EXP Restaurant, created the fantastic Fawk Foods Kitchen & Bakery, which is now well-established in its new location in Pokolbin Village Estate. Breakfast is the finest time to go to the bakery; order the delicious sourdough topped with free-range eggs and thick-cut bacon with BBQ sauce. Try the oven-baked pancakes with caramelized apple, Chantilly cream, macadamia crumb, and maple syrup with a piccolo on the side if you’re feeling very decadent.

  • Usher Tinkler Wines

Travelers who are thirsty and hungry should plan to stop by Usher Tinkler Wines, one of the best Hunter Valley wineries, to savor a platter of salumi with outstanding local varietals from this next-gen winemaker’s cellar.

  • Muse Restaurant

Make reservations in advance at Muse Restaurant, a two-hatted establishment and one of the Hunter Valley’s top attractions, if you really want to get the most out of your trip to wine country . Executive chef, Troy Rhoades-charm Brown’s is contagious in the opulent dining area, where savvily attired wait for personnel dance around the tables.

Where Should I Stay in Hunters Valley?

The Hunter Valley is a rather large area with a variety of tiny villages and suburbs tucked inside, despite the fact that some people might not be aware of this. Your interest in activities and attractions will determine which region is best for your trip.

  • Cypress Lakes Resort

The Cypress Lakes Resort is a piece of heaven on earth and is situated in the center of Pokolbin. You will struggle to leave the resort given its features, which include a vast golf course, a five-star restaurant, a buzzing bar, and a calm pool. You may even walk to a few of the greatest wineries in town from this location to take in the gorgeous surroundings.

  • Convent Hunter Valley

The Convent Hunter Valley is ideal for a weekend spent in the country because it boasts both opulent old-school architecture and lovely gardens. The old structure, which originally housed a community of nuns, is now furnished with antiques and has a peaceful ambiance. Before you leave to return to the busy city on a Sunday morning, take advantage of the high tea that is offered.

How Can I Save Money in Hunters Valley?

You can discover some fantastic prices on AirBnB for modern country cottages with kitchens, a pantry for you to use equipped with everyday essentials, a barbecue, and more if you have a small group (consider 4–12 people). Your finances will benefit from this.

With award-winning wines, renowned restaurants, luxury accommodations, and a full calendar of festivals and events, Hunter Valley is the ideal destination for a short getaway. You’ll fall in love with Australia’s oldest wine region, which is only two hours’ drive north of Sydney and is the source of some of the world’s best wines, including the renowned Hunter Valley Semillon. You won’t even scrape the surface during your wine weekend because this region of Australia has more cellar doors than any other. The historical sites and landscape will make you fall in love with the place.

The vibe: We picture expansive, flowing vineyards and wine cellar doors when we think of the Hunter Valley. And as this area is possibly the largest and oldest wine-growing region in Australia, there is nothing wrong with having such imagery. Hunter Valley comprises wine-producing areas such as Pokolbin, Broke Fordwich, the locality of Hunter, and the Upper Hunter Valley sub-regions.

Frequently asked questions (faq) of hunter valley wine tours.

Hunter Valley vineyards are located approximately 245 km to the North of Sydney and it’s a roughly 3-hour drive via Pacific highway.

For out of state travelers who plan on flying into Sydney Airport, we recommend booking your flights, accommodation, and airport parking in advance, to ensure that your day trip to Hunter Valley is as smooth and stress-free as possible. Mention on your booking if you need an airport pick up with flight details and arrival time.

Our preferable time to take a day tour to Hunter Valley from Sydney is between September to November where the weather is pleasant. From the beginning of December to the end of February are the harvest time and best time for grape picking. However, the weather is not the best and the temperature could be reached near 40c in mid-January.

The ‘best winery’ could be subjective, for example, there are many wineries who have named as 5-star wineries by Halliday wine companion and the top of the list are Brokenwood, McGuigan, and Tyrells. If you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere and the best customer service, Gartlemann wines in Lovedale is our recommendation. We have written a blog on the best wineries in Hunter Valley -based on awards they won recently.

Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine region and counted for over 150 very small to mass production cellar doors.

There are few cellar doors that offer free wine tasting, for example, Sobels wines in Pokolbin. However, most of Hunter Valley cellar doors charges from 5 to 10 $ per head for wine tasting and will reimburse on a purchase. The premium or single-vineyard tasting could be expensive as 25 to 50$ per head.

If you book a Hunter Valley tour with Sydney Private Tours , our guide will recommend and take you to various styles of cellar doors as per booking conditions. However, if you decide to self-drive to Hunter Valley, stop at the Hunter visitor information center at 455 Wine Country Dr to get some recommendations of cellar doors, and also a map of the region. Decide who will be the sober bob before starts your wine tastings as there are many police petrol cars at any given time around Pokolbin, Cessnock, and Lovedale areas.

The predominant grape variety planted in Hunter Valley is Semillon and widely used for dessert wines. Apart from Semillon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Verdelho are the other grape varietals that you can taste in a Hunter Valley day trip from Sydney. Some cellar doors offer the option to do a comparison with wines produce in Orange and Mudgee NSW as well.

It all depends on the cuisine you want to have or your budget. If you are after an exclusive sit-down style meal on your Hunter Valley wine tasting tour, our recommendations are Baume at Lindeman’s cellar door, Amandas on the Edge or Bistro Molines. Usually, a lunch will price at $50 per person in these Hunter Valley restaurants . Harrigan’s Irish Pub, Foghorn Brewery and Twine restaurant are other lunch options or there are few cafes at the Hunter Valley Garden for lunch that would cost less than $20 per person.

Wine tasting notes – Trying wine can feel different for everyone because our sense of taste and smell are tied to our own experiences. People may prefer one wine critic’s opinions over another’s.

There are words commonly used to describe wine that are good to know. They help you understand what a particular type of wine might be like.

Besides flavors, tasting notes also tell you about other things in the wine. According to Andrew Jefford, a wine expert, things like the way the wine feels in your mouth and its overall structure are just as important as how it smells and tastes.

Varietals – A wine varietal is a wine made from one type of grape, like pinot noir or chardonnay. Red, white, sparkling, and dessert wines are different types of wine but not varietals themselves. However, varietals are found within these categories. For example, cabernet franc is a type of red wine varietal.

In some places where wine is made, a varietal has the same name as the grape it’s made from, like a Syrah made from Syrah grapes. This is common in North America, Australia, and South America. In more traditional wine regions like France and Italy, the names of varietals come from where the wine is made, not the grape variety. For instance, a Burgundy wine from the French region is made with Pinot Noir grapes.

Terroir – It is about how the climate, soil, and landscape of a specific area impact the flavour of wine. Certain places are thought to have a stronger “terroir” than others, meaning these factors have a more distinct influence on the wine’s taste.

Tannin – It is a natural substance found in plants, seeds, bark, wood, leaves, and fruit skins. It’s a type of polyphenol, which are large molecules made up of oxygen and hydrogen. The word “tannin” comes from an old Latin word for tanner, linking to the historical use of tree bark in tanning leather. So, in a way, the name comes from that process!

Australia’s finest wineries have just been crowned for 2024 in these prestigious annual awards

Victoria’s Yarra Yering has taken the title of Australia’s Winery of the Year, continuing the state’s four-year reign

Lauren Dinse

Want to escape to wine country? We’ve got plenty of places to pick from Down Under – Yarra Valley , McClaren Vale , Barossa Valley , Margaret River or the Hunter Valley , just to name a few. Within each region, you’ll find plenty of world-class vineyards and estates, offering top-tier drops at every price point. We're here to steer you in the right direction with our guide to the best wineries in Australia , but you can also take advice from The Real Review, one of Australia’s leading authorities in wine, who has just unveiled its highly anticipated annual list of the Top Wineries in Australia.

Taking out the top spot for Winery of the Year Australia 2024 was Yarra Valley winery Yarra Yering. It's the fourth year in a row that a Victorian winery has taken out first prize. And it's not the first time Yarra Yering has taken the crown, having won it back in 2021. The judges gave special mention to Yarra Yering’s Carrodus Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, which achieved an almost-perfect score of 99 points, along with its 2022 Chardonnay and its Dry Red Wine No 1 Cabernet Blend. We'll take a case of each, please. And maybe the vino-tasting job, too?

Winemaker Sarah Crowe smiling for the camera with bottles of wine.

This prestigious prize was awarded by a panel of the nation's top critics who sampled more than 10,000 wines around the country – but their final decision isn't made lightly. To ensure consistency, the ranking is determined by a proprietary algorithm, which considers the rating and recency of reviews by The Real Review’s panel over two years.

Completing the top five of this year’s list is Henschke in second place (Eden Valley, South Australia), Wine by Farr in third (Geelong, Victoria), Penfolds in fourth (South Australia) and the 2023 winner, Oakridge in fifth (Yarra Valley, Victoria).

Across the board, the Barossa Valley leads the pack with the most wineries in this year’s 384-strong list, with South Australian wineries making up more than a third of the list. The next best-performing wine states were Victoria, claiming more than a quarter of the winning wineries, and the Margaret River with 15 per cent.

Curious to see which other wineries stood out from the rest? The full list of The Real Review Top Wineries of Australia 2024 can be found  here . We don't know about you, but our wine racks could do with a few extra bottles.
