The Yosemite Valley Tram Tour: an Amazing and EASY Way to See Yosemite NP

While we typically just do our own thing and plot out sights we want to see, every now and then we’ll do a tour.  National Parks are so easy to explore on your own, especially when you’re planning on hiking a bunch, but when we were in California, we opted to do the Yosemite Valley tram tour.  It was a great option for the family and worth the time.

Yosemite National Park welcomed us for our tour and told us to have fun and get a good seat to be able to listen to the ranger.  We did and we learned a lot about Yosemite National Park … and about how to manage kids on a two hour tour.  It was great though.

You can always drive yourself around checking out views but having a guide is brilliant and so enjoyable. The Yosemite Valley Floor tram tour is amazing with kids! 2traveldads.com

Basics of the Yosemite Valley tram tour

The Yosemite Valley tram tour needs to be booked in advance.  There are only so many of the hybrid open air trams and only so many seats.  And I’ll tell you, Yosemite National Park is an EXTREMELY popular destination for people from all around the world… and on the west coast of the USA … and for Californians doing a weekend getaway.  Basically, everybody loves Yosemite and it is always busy, so plan ahead.

The Yosemite Valley tram tour goes out from the lodge near Yosemite Falls .  It does NOT leave from the Visitors Center and is not close to it.  You MUST park close by or you’ll be walking forever.

The Yosemite Valley tram tour is hosted by a National Park Ranger, not a third party guide.  This is great for two reasons:  1.) it’s somebody who’s fully invested in the park and the tour and 2.) Park Rangers are knowledgeable, caring people that are genuinely passionate about their stomping grounds, Yosemite National Park.  We love Park Rangers!  Ranger Adam was really wonderful on our tour.

Tip :  kids, or at least ours, love Rangers and totally trust them.  Doing activities like completing a Junior Ranger program or going on a Ranger-led tour or hike are great ways to inspire kids to care about the environment and maybe plant some career goal seeds in them.

The tram tour really is two hours+.  The time is used fully, between planned stops where you get off the tram or pull over to look for rock climbers high on the cliffs, or if you’re just sitting by the Merced River listening to nature for a few moments.  The sights, sounds and information the Park Ranger shares goes from start to finish.

Sights to See from the Yosemite Tram

Everything in Yosemite National Park is a sight to see.  Even the low-lying plants in the woods are worth your time to appreciate.  But hey, we’re in Yosemite so we’re talking about grand sights and stories.  And for a really cool hotel IN YOSEMITE, check out this review of the Yosemite Valley Lodge !

Such an amazing, striking piece of rock.  For sure, it’s incredible.  Our Yosemite Valley tram tour guide was great, especially when it came to sharing stories and info about El Capitan and the other rock formations in the Park.  Ranger Adam was very passionate about rock climbing and geology and shared lots of stories about mountaineering and its history in the park.  The best though were his own stories about climbing El Capitan (16 times I think he said) and helping us spot climbers up high on the face of the rock.

El Capitan in Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park 2traveldads.com

Fun moment :  Ranger Adam had a friend traversing El Capitan on the day of our tram tour, so when we got to a spot with a clear view of her route up the cliff, Ranger Adam had everybody yell hello to her in unison.  Oliver loved this because, well, what four year old doesn’t want to yell at the top of their lungs whenever possible?  But really, such a cool Ranger with great stories. Fun fact :  the Yosemite Valley tram tour takes you by Camp 4 which is seemingly just a campground, but it’s on the National Registry of Historic Places due to its significance in the development and advancement of mountaineering.

The Merced River in the Yosemite Valley

Starting up in the Sierras beyond Half Dome is the Merced River.  It cascades down Nevada Falls and then meanders along the Yosemite Valley floor.  We made two stops along it, once to get out and stretch and use the bathrooms/take pictures and the other just to listen to it.  The Merced River isn’t a raging one in this area of Yosemite National Park, but it’s beautiful and mirrors the colors of the sky and trees around it.

Unrelated tip :  we enjoyed an afternoon picnic on the Merced River at the Cathedral picnic area.  This spot is accessible from South Side Drive and has plenty of parking, picnic tables and great places to enjoy lunch down on the river.  It is one of the most breathtaking picnic spots we’ve ever eaten at, and that includes the Steamboat picnic site in Yellowstone National Park.

Tunnel View: Busy but Worth It

I could go on forever about the beauty of Tunnel View, but I won’t. Instead, read our article about Tunnel View and see why it’s worth the stop and how to leverage a visit to this amazing vista to create an awesome Yosemite experience.  Basically, Tunnel View captures everything you went to Yosemite to experience, but from a distance.  It’s a great place to be inspired.

Chris Taylor and TinyMan at Tunnel View in Yosemite National Park 2traveldads.com (1)

Tip :  if you bring a small tripod on the Yosemite Valley tram tour, you’ll have a long stop at Tunnel View and can capture the clouds rolling across the Yosemite Valley.  It’s a beautiful sight and a great family photo spot.

Half Dome: the Yosemite Icon

Half Dome is huge.  Huge.  You only get a few great views of it because it’s enormous and as you approach it, it overwhelms you and you lose the ability to photograph it well.  The approach and departure from the Half Dome area is really wonderful though and you’ll get a pretty good idea of how immense it is… as you fail to capture Half Dome in one frame on your camera.

Rob Taylor and Half Dome from Valley Floor in Yosemite National Park 2traveldads.com

Hiking up Half Dome is a bucket list hike for a lot of people. It’s its own full day activity and needs to be permitted in advance. If you didn’t score your permit months out when they first opened them, seeing Half Dome from the Yosemite Valley Tram Tour is may be as good as you’ll get. It’s great, but it’s not epic like viewing the whole valley from atop Half Dome.

PS: I’ve done it. Hiking Half Dome is astounding and very tiring. It’s well worth the hike, but it’s intense. The views and the waterfalls are awesome, and really, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime hike.

Bridal Veil and Yosemite Falls

Each of these sights needs its own visit, but you get to see both of them on the Yosemite Valley Tram tour. Bridal Veil Falls is the star of the show, being seen at the first tram tour stop along the Merced River and then again when you reach Tunnel View… and then again when you drive by it on South Side Drive.  It’s beautiful from every angle. And if you get out and walk up to it, you’ll get a bit soaked.

Rob Taylor and Tinyman using Piggyback Rider at Bridal Veil Falls in Yosemite National Park 4

Yosemite Falls has two main splash downs.  Upper Yosemite Falls is a phenomenal, picture perfect sight with its flow being stolen by the wind and spread across the face of the cliff.  Lower Yosemite Falls is not as high and is more concentrated, but still pretty.  Together, they are a sight to behold and if you’ve got a kid into waterfalls (enter Oliver, our oldest) it’s the golden ticket of falls.

Stops on the Yosemite Valley Tram Tour

There are only two stops that are structured into the tour.  The first stop is along the Merced River and lasts about ten minutes or so.  This is the only stop where there is a bathroom available.  This is also a great photo opportunity, from family pics in front of Bridal Veil Falls to photographing native flowering trees.

Tram tour in Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park 2 2traveldads.com

Tunnel View is the other stop.  You know we love Tunnel View and think that of all of the sights in our National Parks, Tunnel View is the most iconic and represents what America’s National Parks are set up to protect.  Enjoy this stop and take in the Yosemite Valley for all that it’s worth.

Tip :  hot day or cold, being in an open air tram will dry you out.  If you didn’t bring your own water bottle, take advantage of the water cooler that the tour provides.  We’re constantly reminding our kids (and our readers) to stay hydrated for the best experiences.

Rob Taylor and kids at Tunnel view Yosemite National Park 2traveldads.com

Being Prepared for the Yosemite Valley Tram Tour

Oh hey, we just reminded you to bring a water bottle, but we’ll tell you again. Stay hydrated! Other important things to remember:

Go potty ahead of time Bring a light jacket and a hat (it gets windy and there can be weird weather) Eat first because there’s no food allowed on the Yosemite Valley tram tour and you’ll be hungry by the time it’s over. BRING YOUR CAMERA Bring a small tripod if you want to capture a beautiful time lapse video when you’re at the planned stops

So, was the two hour tour worth our time?  Did the kids appreciate it?  Yes and yes.  While it may seem like two hours isn’t long enough to experience the Yosemite Valley, it actually is plenty for just taking in the sights.  Two hours of information from your Park Ranger guide is a lot to absorb, but it’s incredible to hear from those working directly with the Park all of their stories and tips.

Chris Taylor and Sleeping TinyMan after tram tour of Yosemite Valley Floor in Yosemite National Park 1

The kids were fine with the length, as there were enough stops to break it up and the open air makes it not feel like being in a car.  Also, since both kids fell asleep and got small naps, well, that’s always good and made the rest of our day easier.  I think we all felt that it was a great idea to do the Yosemite Valley tram tour during our road trip, and it was especially good for a way to introduce the kids to Yosemite for their first visit.

Taylor Family on tram tour of Yosemite Valley Floor in Yosemite National Park 2

Family travel idea :  we haven’t done them, but many National Parks offer tours.   Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks offer them on vintage buses. Kayaking tours in Everglades National Park are amazing. THe overall Dry Tortugas National Park tour experience is unforgettable! There are so many options.

Do you ever go on structured walking or ride-along tours?  What tips do you have for taking kids on them?  Leave a comment below to share your ideas of how to incorporate fun tours into family travel.

Sunday 9th of July 2023

Do you recommend a time to take the tram, day or evening?

If you can do it later in the afternoon you'll get my favorite sunny angle, but in the morning you'll get more active wildlife. Mid-day can be so hot and it's when the park is busiest, so I recommend avoiding from 11am until about 3pm.

I plan on being there April 24 thru April 25, Where and how do I reserve a seat for me and wife? How much is it?

Excellent, you'll love it. Here's the website, and then click on Valley Floor (you can also call to reserve): https://www.travelyosemite.com/things-to-do/guided-bus-tours/

Hi! Thank you for sharing your life experiences! I am taking a Girl Scout Troop out to Yosemite in June 2020. Can you recommend interesting stops on the way to Yosemite from San Fran? The girls are 16 and 17 yrs old. I think we will be coming in via hwy 140. We are located in Atlanta so planning this trip from afar has been fun and challenging. Any advice you can give for our 3 days in Yosemite would be helpful. Thanks Liz

Wow! Fun! Let me work on it. I'm going to send you a quick email so I don't forget.

Sunday 15th of January 2017

You mentioned booking the tram well in advance. Where might one do that? Do you have a link you could provide or phone number? We are anticipating staying at the Yosemite Lodge but didn't want to wing it and just assume we could catch a tram because we'd be staying there.

Thanks in advance. Momma from Dallas, Texas

Welcome to the yosemite valley floor tour.

Explore one of America’s most incredible national parks without the hassle of a tour group! Witness towering waterfalls and majestic mountain peaks which capture the height of America’s beauty. Hike through the lush wilderness, picnic by pristine lakes, and stand atop breathtaking overlooks. Plus, dive into the surprising, unlikely history behind this immense park. There’s simply no place on earth like Yosemite.

About the Tour

You can begin this tour from any of Yosemite’s four entrances.

From your chosen entrance, you’ll head toward the center of the park and do the Yosemite Valley Floor tour. As you drive along the GPS-marked route, you’ll hear about the history of this beautiful park, how it came to be, and the presidential visit that defined its early days. You’ll also get a crash course in the wildlife you might find here and how to spot them!

Soon, you’ll reach Loop Road, which contains the park’s top attractions. First, you’ll see Bridalveil Fall, an astonishing waterfall plunging 620 feet to a pool below. Next is Cathedral Beach, offering immaculate views of the imposing cliff El Capitan.

Then, you’ll pass the Four-Mile Trail, a famous path that climbs over 3,600 feet along its length. After that is the Yosemite Valley Chapel, a historic church dating back to 1879 that still holds services today! Past that is another historic building: the Yosemite Conservation Heritage Center, once home to the storied Sierra Club.

Next up is Yosemite Village, a great place to stop for snacks and shops. Beyond the village, you’ll find Cook’s Meadow Loop, a relaxing stroll offering perfect waterfall views.

You’ll get a great look at Yosemite Falls, a dizzying tall waterfall that puts Bridalveil Fall to shame, clocking in at over 2,400 feet! More adventurous travelers will also find a hiking trail that leads up to the top of those same falls.

You’ll pass a trio of mountains called the Three Brothers next before getting a good look at one of Yosemite’s most famous cliffs: El Capitan. Here, you’ll learn about both the conservationist responsible for preserving this impressive landscape in the first place and the daredevil climber who scaled El Capitan’s towering surface without any safety gear!

Finally, you’ll arrive at Hanging Valley Viewpoint, offering sweeping views of Bridalveil Fall and the Merced River. The tour will conclude here, but there are plenty of optional stops left to explore, including a grove of giant sequoias and tons more waterfalls and overlooks! The GPS pins make it easy to customize your visit to Yosemite and visit all the spots you most want to see!

Yosemite National Park is located in central California, not far from the Nevada state line. It’s about a 4-hour drive from San Francisco or 3 hours from Sacramento.

Are there any scenic routes to take from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe?

Taking Tioga Road (Route 120) onto Highway 395 North will offer some of the most scenic views on a drive between Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe.

What is the best time to visit Yosemite National Park?

Late spring and early fall are probably the best times to visit Yosemite, as you’ll dodge the bulk of the crowds and catch some of the park’s sunniest days. That said, the entire summer is great if you don’t mind crowds. Winter can be tricky due to unpredictable snowstorms.

Yellowstone vs Yosemite: Which national park to visit this summer?

Deciding between Yellowstone and Yosemite depends entirely on what you’re looking for. If you love hiking and want to really immerse yourself in nature, Yosemite probably takes first place. But if you want to stroll along boardwalks over unearthly landscapes of geysers, bison herds, and prismatic springs, pick Yellowstone!

How long does it take to drive from San Francisco to Yosemite?

The drive from San Francisco to Yosemite generally takes around 4 hours. In the summer, add at least an extra hour to your calculations to account for traffic.

What is the Yosemite entrance fee?

A 7-day pass to enter Yosemite costs $35 per car. If you plan to visit other national parks in the coming year, however, you should opt for the $80 America the Beautiful pass, which offers entry into all national parks for 12 months.

Are there any hot springs near Yosemite that are accessible to the public?

While there are no hot springs within Yosemite National Park, they can be found not far from the park at Travertine, Mammoth Lakes, and Buckeye, all of which are between 40-50 miles away.

Which are the top Yosemite must-see sights?

El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Yosemite Falls are among the park’s many must-see attractions. The Yosemite Valley Loop leads past all of these, as well as other can’t-miss spots.

Can you go hiking in Yosemite? Which are the best hikes in Yosemite?

You can absolutely go hiking in Yosemite! The Yosemite Falls Trail and the Half Dome Hike are among the park’s best hikes, but with so many options, it’s up to you to decide based on which landmarks you most want to see.

Yosemite in April: is it a good time to visit?

April is one of the best months to visit Yosemite. Not only is it less crowded than later months, but seeing the spring blooms in the park is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What are the best kid-friendly activities to do in Yosemite National Park?

Yosemite features plenty of easier hikes for kids, but the activities don’t end there. Younger visitors can also earn Jr. Ranger badges from the Park Service, spot amazing wildlife, and much more.

More Information on Yosemite National Park Day Tour

Yosemite is a magnificent wilderness only a few hours’ drive from San Francisco. A Yosemite Day Tour from San Francisco will complete your trip to Northern California. Your day in Yosemite park includes a guided in-coach tour of Yosemite Valley with our informative and professional guides providing history and insight into one of the earth’s best examples of a glaciated valley.

The day begins with a hotel pick-up between 6:15 am and 7:00 am. Heading east across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge offers great views of the San Francisco skyline, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the Golden Gate Bridge. En Route to the park we cross through the Central Valley, where we will stop at a fruit stand for some local produce. Famous for its rich volcanic soil, the Central Valley is the largest agricultural region in the United States. The section we drive through is best known for specialty fruits and nuts such as almonds, walnuts, cherries, and strawberries. After this quick rest stop, we enter the rolling foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Continuing into the mountains brings us to California gold country and the gold rush town of Groveland before we wind our way into Yosemite National Park. Maps in hand, we begin with a one and a half hour in-coach narrated tour of Yosemite’s glaciated valley. You will see famous waterfalls and rock formations including Yosemite Falls—the tallest waterfall in North America—El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Falls, Sentinel Dome, and much more. During the tour, you will see Yosemite Valley from a number of great vantage points, the best of which is perhaps Inspiration Point. At 4,500 feet above sea level, this viewpoint gives you a commanding view east up the valley. Yosemite is a mecca for rock climbers and the sight of people climbing El Capitan’s 3,200 ft. (1000m) the sheer rock face is quite amazing.

Because of our small group size, we can incorporate multiple photos stops into our tour so you can better enjoy your time in the park. After the tour, we stop for the afternoon near the base of Yosemite Falls, where there are a variety of options for lunch (not included). After eating, you will have 3-4 hours of free time to explore the valley as you choose.

You can walk to the base of Yosemite Falls, check out the visitor center, visit the Ansel Adams Gallery, stop in at the Ahwahnee Hotel, rent a cruiser bike, or hike some of the trails that originate from the valley. Although you could spend three weeks in Yosemite, the three hours you get on your own is enough time to understand why Yosemite is one of America’s most popular national parks. Regrouping again in the late afternoon, we head for San Francisco, stopping for a short break before arriving back in the city and dropping you at your lodging between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm.

A good way to get an overview of the Valley and hear a little history of the park. Could have done without the White Shame political commentary from the Ranger though.

I had a great time on the Valley Floor Tour on October 2nd, 2016. The guide was knowledgable and engaging, we considered the tour a great value for the money at two full hours long, and the gorgeous scenery and unobstructed photo-ops from the open-air tram were endless. And there's just something so fun about riding around on the back of a flatbed truck, in one of the most beautiful places on earth, no less! We really were so pleased - because it's called the Valley FLOOR Tour, I didn't expect it would actually climb out of the valley to afford us the famous "tunnel view", but it did! Outstanding bonus. Bring a jacket and a scarf - even in mild weather, it can get windy and a bit nippy since you're out in the elements on a vehicle that travels on average 25 miles per hour. Absolutely recommend!

Photo of Margaret G.

Words cannot describe the incredible splendor of the tour. The Rangers know the best spots for photos that will make you believe you are a talented photographer. Kiera gave an interesting historical perspective of Yosemite and the importance of preservation for our overall well being. Take this tour to enrich your Yosemite experience. My college son said it was a 'bomb'.

Photo of Darren P.

Ranger Cindy and driver Kent did an excellent job guiding our tour. Ranger Cindy was very knowledgeable and gave us a very interesting tour. We would have missed a lot if we drove around on our own. Thank you.

Photo of Joan H.

I agree with just about everything all other enthusiasts of the Valley Floor Tour said -- it's a fantastic way to orient yourself in the park and hear some amazing stories about what makes this place so extra special. The ranger guide we had was absolutely lovely and her enthusiasm for her job was obvious. It really made me feel so proud to be American and helped me appreciate this absolutely stunning place even more. I was able to buy my tickets upon my arrival in the park that morning (we went in late August) from the gate checkpoint. I paid at the meeting place where you can purchase other tour ticket related stuff. Absolute must! I can even see myself doing it again - as it really is a grand overview with awesome stories.

Photo of Fran W.

Sweet open air tram. Knowledgeable guide. A couple of quick photo op stops. Splendid views. Worth doing to get a feel for the park.

Photo of Christopher B.

I normally don't recommend taking a tour through a National Park as I feel like you should explore it by hiking. However, we were exhausted from a long day and this seemed like the perfect way to end the day. I thought the shuttle was super informative and gave a nice overview of the park. Since we took it near dusk, we got amazing views from Tunnel View as the sun was setting and then we saw several bears roaming around on our way back to the Yosemite Village. Finally, I guess for those individuals you cannot hike or have trouble walking this provides a great opportunity for them to see different aspects of the park from the bottom up.

Photo of Kriston J.

We went on this tour with 2 teenagers, my elderly parents, myself and my husband. The Ranger Guide was excellent and shared a lot of great historical information about the park. We had a great time and highly recommend the tour.

Photo of Eric B.

This tour is a great way to get oriented with Yosemite Valley. Note the winter tours are in a regular bus, limiting the views of certain sights, but you can always walk back later to explore any areas you like once you know the lay of the land.

Photo of Francine S.

This tour was a lot of fun. Me and my 3-year old daughter did the 2 hour tour at 6 pm. Although we were there during near triple-digit heat, it was very comfortable riding through the open air. The tour guide spoke most of the ride and was very entertaining. It felt very safe, there were a couple of stops where we could get out and take pictures and they provided water. It costs $25 to ride the tour, children 5 and under are free. We bought our tickets at the activities desk at Yosemite Lodge. The tour meets at Yosemite Lodge by the checkin area, it is stop 8 if you use the free shuttle service.

Also, would Monday be better than Sunday in terms of traffic? We are considering either of the two days. Thank you!

5 replies to this topic

' class=

Monday is definitely better than a Sunday.

The last two weekends I know that some of the tours ran 3-4 hours instead of 2 hours.

yosemite valley floor tour promo code

Monday generally is less crowded than Sunday for sure. Because on Sundays, those residents who live within 2 to 4 hours of Yosemite will make day-visits to the park with their family in addition to summer vacationers, domestic or from other countries. Added people-volume. Except on a Monday that is part of a long weekend - such as July 3 this year, and Labor Day Monday. Those Mondays will be equal (or even more) crowded.

Thanks for the information. At least the tour did not end when the 2 hours planned time was up!

I see. Thanks for the information! It makes

sense that Monday is generally less

crowded than the weekend. Luckily that we are not aiming for the July 3rd or Labor Day Mondays. So, we should choose a Monday.

Keep in mind that most of the extra your time was spent sitting in traffic with everyone else. Which up until this weekend the weather has been nice. But forecast looks like we're about to hit more typical weather around here with close to triple digits.
