Travel the world like an Airline Pilot.

Atlanta Int’l Airport (ATL): The Ultimate 4-6 Hour Layover Guide (by a Pilot)

Looking at one of those layovers at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) that seems too short to do anything substantial, but long enough to get bored at the airport? As a commuting airline pilot, I’ve felt your pain many, many times – especially in Atlanta.

Fortunately, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is one of the most accessible out there. You can get from ATL Airport to downtown Atlanta in just 25 minutes for just $5 roundtrip, opening up a world of opportunity.

Even if you don’t leave the airport, ATL has a lot more to do than you would expect. From its world-renowned restaurants to its excellent lounges and even a spa or two, you’ll have trouble getting bored here – trust me.

But sometimes it’s good to do something boring. My favorite boring activity on a short layover between long flights? Catching up on sleep . So if you’re in need of some z’s, worry not – the ATL has got great day room hotels super close to the airport and even accommodations inside the airport .

Atlanta isn’t the busiest airport in the world for no reason. Let’s see what makes it special – and how a layover in the ATL can actually turn out to be a good thing.

What can I do inside the airport at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL)? Here are the top 5 things.

From world class lounges (that are continually being improved via multi-billion dollar projects ) to sleep rooms to a Ludacris-owned restaurant , Atlanta International Airport has a ton of things to do without having to leave the airport.

  • Walk through miles of corridors – all accessible
  • Enjoy a world-class airport lounge
  • Dine in one of the best airport restaurants of your life
  • Take a nap in a MinuteSuite inside the airport
  • Unwind and relax with a massage at an XpresSpa

1) Take a hike across the miles of terminals at ATL

My favorite activity at Atlanta Airport? Walking.

It’s actually 10,600 feet, or just shy of 2 miles from the airport concourse (T Gates) to the Atlanta Airport International Terminal (E and F Gates). You can take the SkyTrain, obviously, but what fun is that?

Along the way, there are a ton of exhibits to keep you fascinated. There’s the lightshow between the A and B, a Zimbabwe exhibit of history between T and A, an animal exhibit at C, or my favorite – the history of Atlanta Airport, between B and C.

When you get tired, just take the ATL SkyTrain to wherever you need to be – they leave every 1-2 minutes from every terminal during the daytime and 8 minutes at night.

2) Relax in a roomy airport lounge

If you’re flying on Delta Air Lines and have a Delta SkyClub membership , there is at least one Delta SkyClub in every terminal. You can become a member with the AMEX Platinum and Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Cards.

Those flying United with Star Alliance Gold status can access the one United Club in Terminal T. Likewise, there’s an American Admirals Club in Terminal T – and this one offers a day pass to nonmembers flying AA/oneworld, for $59.

At the Atlanta Airport international terminal ( F ), The Club at ATL, though often crowded, offers a decent lounge with access to showers . And it’s complimentary for PriorityPass members !

You can also purchase a day pass for $45.

3) Dine in a world-class restaurant

There are over 300 restaurants, shops and service in Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. That means a LOT of choice!

One particular favorite is Chicken + Beer , a restaurant owned by Christopher Bridges, better known as Ludacris! Another great locality is One Flew South, an extremely popular restaurant serving Southern/Eclectic food in Terminal E.

You can easily find tap houses such as Terrapin, Sam Adams, Sweetwater, Gordon Biersch, and a lot more.

I personally find myself often venturing off to Terminal D to get some Chipotle . But the choice is seemingly endless. Bon Appetit!

4) Take a nap at a MinuteSuites (complimentary for Priority Pass members !)

Had a long flight or early start into Atlanta? You’re in luck.

The Minute Suites in Terminal B offers suites from $45. Better yet, if you are a member of Priority Pass , you can have suite for an hour for free ! Each subsequent hour is at a discounted rate only $28 – well worth it for sleep.

5) Enjoy maximum rejuvenation with a massage at BeRelaxSpa

I’m not going to pretend like traveling isn’t stressful. Even as a pilot, I sometimes feel like I need to unwind after a day at the airport.

But I can’t think of a better way to undo hours of stress and completely erases the worries of traveling than by enjoying spa services.

At ATL, you can enjoy back massages, nail polish change and hand massages, and foot massages at the BeRelaxSpa in Concourse B – complimentary with PriorityPass .

What can I do outside the airport during a layover at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL)?

For those itching to leave the airport during your layover, don’t worry. There’s a ton to do. Here are my favorites:

1) Ride on MARTA (Train) to Midtown Atlanta for $5 Roundtrip

Getting public transportation from ATL to downtown Atlanta is shockingly easy. In fact, the MARTA (local metro train) station is located right in baggage claim! You can buy 2 one-way tickets for $2.50 each, plus $2 for a MARTA card.

You’ll ride for 22 minutes (and 11 stops) until you reach Midtown. The MARTA station is perfectly situated in the heart of Midtown Atlanta.

And though downtown Atlanta may not be your cup of tea, you’d be surprised by how wonderful Midtown Atlanta is. My personal favorite area is Piedmont Park , a vast, expansive, and gorgeous park filled with trees, lakes, and surrounded by fantastic restaurants. It could be described as the Central Park of Atlanta.

Some of my favorite restaurants in the area include:

  • Bun Mi Vietnamese Grill, for wonderful Banh Mi and Boba Tea
  • Marrakech Express, for the best Mediterranean food in Georgia
  • MetroFresh, for excellent healthy food that’s available in a hurry

Ponce City Market , a massive old railroad station turned shopping and food center, offers so much to see and do. From wine tasting to art lessons to fantastic coffee, you’ll have to watch your clock and make sure not to miss your flight!

The Beltline, an ex-railway turned pedestrian path, runs between Piedmont Park and the Ponce City Market, lined with cute restaurants and amazing microbreweries. You can rent a CityBike and go bar hopping or simply enjoy the wonderful tree-lined scenery.

And for those looking to explore an upscale part of town, you can take MARTA all the way to Buckhead. There’s are several wonderful, elegant rooftop bars featuring incredible views over the city.

2) Visit the Delta Flight Museum

Those with even the slightest interest in aviation would be hard-pressed to miss this one. From standing on the wings of a Boeing 747-400 jumbojet to standing under the wings of a Douglas DC-6 to flying a Boeing 737 Full Flight Simulator, you’ll constantly be in awe.

To get there, you’ll have to take a rideshare for approximately $10-15 each way. A one-day pass costs $15 and hours are Thursday-Sunday from 10AM-4PM.

If you’re looking to save some money, you can take a free hotel shuttle to the Hilton Atlanta Airport and walk about 15 minutes to the flight museum.

3) Learn to drive fast at the Porsche Driving Experience

Anyone looking to have some fun with an extremely unique, adrenaline-pumping experience on their layover in Atlanta: Porsche has you covered.

Literally right next to the airport is the Porsche Driving Experience Center of Atlanta, where you can drive anything from a GT3 to a Taycan to a Macan. They offer a ton of different amazing experiences to bolster your love for driving, Porsches, and hopefully improve your skills!

Experiences start at about $400. Keep in mind that these are extremely popular and tend to sell out weeks ahead of time.

4) Take the Plane Train to the “Concourse” Area hotels for an awesome walking area next to the airport

One of my personal favorite things to do when the weather is nice and I have a longer layover at ATL is to take the free, super-convenient Plane Train to the Gateway Hotels station and walk around. It’s the first stop (before you get to the Rental Car Center) and takes less than 5 minutes to arrive from baggage claim.

The Georgia International Convention Center is located here and it’s a very woodsy area, perfect for walking in nature and getting some delicious fresh air on a layover.

5) Grab a nap at a Day Room

My favorite and most boring thing I love to do on layovers: catch up on sleep!

Luckily Atlanta International Airport has a couple great hotels offering day rooms in the vicinity. They all offer free airport shuttles, and some (such as the Hotel Indigo ) are accessible by MARTA (Atlanta’s version of a subway).

These include:

1. The Atlanta Airport Marriott

The Atlanta Airport Marriott , with day rooms available as low as $69+tax. This is one of the best rated hotels around Atlanta Airport, and is super close to the Domestic Terminal.

2. The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Atlanta Airport

Want a free cookie before your nap? Head to the DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta Airport and grab a dayroom for as low as $75+tax.

3. The Hotel Indigo Atlanta Airport

Looking for something different? The Hotel Indigo is more charming, artsy, and ’boutique’ than your typical chain. With Day Rooms as low as $73+tax, you’re getting an awesome bang for the buck.

Remember to return for your flight! Here’s how to find Atlanta Airport security wait times.

I know you might be enjoying your layover, but don’t enjoy it so much that you miss your flight!

Plan in some extra time when returning to the airport as Atlanta gets busy . You can find live ATL TSA wait times here .

If you don’t want to wait (at all) for security, ATL does offer the new CLEAR system to get you through security, and I’ve  never  seen a line there – at any airport.

CLEAR has a 6 month free trial and is totally included with some credit cards; check with your bank. It’s totally worth it – and I say that as an airline pilot!

Layovers at Atlanta International Airport Don’t Have to be Boring

As you can see, Atlanta is actually quite the desirable place to have a longer layover. There’s so much to do inside and outside of the airport, and definitely something for everybody.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Long ago, 287 of the 4,700 acres that Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International now sits on were actually occupied by a racetrack by the name of The Atlanta Speedway . The old track that once attracted fast cars has since been replaced by five aircraft runways and what in 1998 took the title of busiest airport in the world . Atlanta 's airport sees well over 100 million passengers pass through its gates annually, and that number continues to grow year after year. On average, more than 275,000 passengers arrive or depart from the 2,700 flights that come through Hartsfield-Jackson daily.

Why is Atlanta the center of the nation's (and globe's) flight network, you ask? Being located within two hours (by flight) to 80 percent of the U.S. population certainly doesn't hurt. This airport offers nonstop services to at least 150 domestic destinations and an additional 70 international destinations in more than 50 countries. It's the primary hub of Delta Air Lines , which operates about 1,000 peak-day departures to 200-plus destinations worldwide. Other domestic carriers such as American, JetBlue, and United, have a major presence at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, as do foreign carriers Air France, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic.

This enormous travel center can be overwhelming even for the folks who have traveled through it numerous times. The terminal complex, encompassing 6.8 million square feet, is split into an International Terminal named after Maynard H. Jackson Jr. and a Domestic Terminal that is further split into sections North and South (the South portion is called the Atlanta Airport Delta Terminal because it exclusively serves Delta Air Lines). Between the terminals are seven pier concourses—labeled T, A, B, C, D, E, and F—connected by one long hallway. The latter two are reserved for international flights. Shopping and dining is found throughout all concourses and both terminals, but much of it is centered around the grand, circular Atrium on the Domestic side.

Airport Code, Location, and Contact Information

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is so big that it warrants two addresses: one for the Domestic Terminal (6000 North Terminal Parkway) and one for the International Terminal (2600 Maynard H. Jackson Jr. Boulevard). Each terminal has its own entrance and parking lots.

  • ATL is located about 10 miles from Downtown Atlanta in the unincorporated areas of Fulton and Clayton counties.
  • Phone : (800) 897-1910
  • Website : www.atl.com
  • Flight Tracker : http://apps.atl.com/Passenger/FlightInfo/Default.aspx

Know Before You Go

Despite its intricate fishbone-like layout, with the domestic section being the head and the international area being the tail, ATL is easy to navigate once you orient yourself with its many "body parts." On one side, you have the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal; on the other, the Domestic Terminal, which is divided into two sections—North and South—with the Atrium in the middle. The two terminals are connected by a hallway that has seven concourses dotted along it, each jetting out to the north and south (these would be the ribs). Five are for domestic flights and two are for international. There's an inter-terminal rail link called the Plane Train that runs between terminals, stopping at all concourses, 24 hours a day. There's also an underground skywalk called the Transportation Mall and a free shuttle bus that travels between terminals (not stopping at concourses along the way).

As the world's busiest airport, a title that it claimed in 1998 and annually renews, waits at security checkpoints can reach an hour at peak times. Apply for TSA PreCheck (which must be done in advance) or CLEAR (available on the spot) to cut down on your wait time and plan on arriving at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one. You can access current security wait times on the ATL website , which also offers Trak-a-Line , which will update you via email or text if security times significantly change leading up to your flight. Because security lines for international departures tend to move faster and you can reach the domestic gates without re-entering security, it might be best for domestic travelers to arrive at the International Terminal instead.

ATL Parking

Hartsfield-Jackson has more than 40,000 parking spaces, but be sure to check the airport  website for the latest on construction projects and road closures as well as the current capacity of parking lots  before driving into ATL.

Parking at the Domestic Terminal is available for $3 per hour or $24 for the day at the North and South Hourly Parking Lots, for $3 per hour or $14 for the day at the four-level (covered) Daily Parking Lot, for $3 per hour or $10 for the day at the Economy Lots (on the north, south, and west sides of the terminal), and for $3 per hour or $12 for the day at Park-Ride lots A and C, which is a short shuttle ride away from Terminal North and Terminal South, respectively.

Parking at the International Terminal includes the Hourly lot, $3 per hour or $24 per day, and the Park-Ride lot just west of Loop Road (three minutes on the shuttle) for $3 per hour or $12 per day.

Additionally, there are plenty of nearby off-site parking options that aren't affiliated with the airport (and could, therefore, offer a lower price), including  Peachy Airport Parking  and Park N' Fly , both of which take reservations and operate shuttle services to either terminal.

Driving Directions

Both Domestic and International are accessible via Interstates 20, 75, 85, and 285 and are about a 20- to 30-minute drive from the city center. From Downtown Atlanta, the quickest route is typically via I-85 South, which merges onto I-75 South, a straight shot to ATL. Signage is clearly marked coming from all directions.

Public Transportation and Taxis

Hartsfield-Jackson is the last southbound stop on the Gold and Red lines of  MARTA , the city's train system. It stops at Airport Station between the North and South baggage claims in the Domestic Terminal. You can access it from the International Terminal by a free shuttle bus, also located just outside the baggage claim. Trains depart every 10 to 20 minutes and can be accessed with a Breeze Card, which passengers can purchase from vending machines at the station or online.

In addition to the train, MARTA also operates a bus from ATL, too. Bus 191 is the only route that services the airport. It runs from the Clayton County Justice Center to Lakewood Station and back, stopping by the airport midway, but beware because it can be slow.

If you're willing to splurge on a taxi , you'll find one outside baggage claim at each terminal. They charge a flat rate minimum of $30 to and from the Downtown area, with an additional charge of $2 per person. Rates to Midtown start at $32, Buckhead at $40, and other areas are $2.50 for the first eighth-mile, then $0.25 for each additional eighth-mile.

Where to Eat and Drink

It can be difficult to choose from ATL's 100-plus restaurants when then travel hanger finally kicks in. There are kiosks, coffee shops, concessions, and sit-down restaurants tucked into every corner of this vast, web-like airport, and if you don't plan your meals ahead of time, you might miss out on some of the best food in Atlanta. Each concourse is chockfull of food options by the dozens, so rest assured a burger, pho, or slice of pizza will never be too far from reach. Concourse T, which is connected to the Domestic Terminal, is home to Grindhouse Killer Burgers (for your beef and milkshake fix), Atlanta Stillhouse (prime Southern-style barbecue), and Papi's Caribbean Cafe. Other foodie highlights include Varasano's (a pizzeria and piano bar) in Concourse A, the Last Cast Bar and Grill (tacos and bar food) in Concourse B, The Varsity in Concourse C, One Flew South (an upscale eatery that's been repeatedly named one of the best airport restaurants in the world) in Concourse E. The International Terminal, itself, doesn't have many options—but international flyers are able to access the Domestic Terminal and concourses.

Airport Lounges

Hometown airline Delta has put its Sky Clubs in every concourse, offering passengers complimentary beverages, food, free Wi-Fi, and satellite television. Access is limited to members, with up to two guests allowed per member at $39 each. Some have showers, too.

United and American also have members-only clubs, which are located in Concourse T. British Airways, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Lounge Club, and Diners Club International passengers have access to the common-use lounge—The Club at ATL—which is located on Concourse F. Day passes are available for $40. There's also a USO Lounge on the third floor of the Atrium that's free for active members of the military and their families.

Wi-Fi and Charging Stations

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport. Once you've selected the airport network, you'll be directed to a splash page to enter your name and email address in order to connect. The airport has ample charging stations at gates in all concourses, so you don't have to worry about running out of juice during your wait.

ATL Tips and Tidbits

  • The airport is home to a 1,000-square-foot dog park, Poochie Park, which is located at the Ground Transportation area just outside doors W1 and W2 of Domestic Terminal South. The grassy haven is leash-free and open 24 hours a day.
  • If you're interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look at what made ATL the world's busiest airport, sign up for a tour of airport operations, the airfield, the eTower, or the fire station. There's also a history walk through Concourses B and C. Tours last 1.5 to 3 hours and start at 9 and 10 a.m. You must sign up at least 21 days before your flight to participate.
  • The Aviation Art Program started in 1979 by then-Mayor Maynard Jackson. The program commissions artists to create site-specific artwork presents rotating exhibitions, and schedules performing arts series throughout the airport.

Navigate Atlanta's Airport Like a Pro With This Guide

Traveling and connecting smoothly through one of the world’s busiest airports can be done. Here’s how.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the world’s busiest airports. Use this guide to navigate ATL, from ground transportation to connections and layovers.

Domestic Terminal: Arriving by Car

On the domestic side, avoid traffic by using the lower-level entry, near hourly parking, for curbside drop-offs and pickups. Cones block you from switching lanes on the upper level.

Domestic Terminal: Public Transportation

Atlanta’s public rail line has an airport station with trains coming south from downtown. MARTA also extends farther north, east and west from downtown to surrounding neighborhoods and suburbs. “MARTA is smarta,” as locals say.

Getting to the International Terminal

For rideshare pickup/dropoff, request 2600 Maynard H. Jackson Jr. Blvd. for international, and 6000 North Terminal Parkway for domestic. Directional signage, hidden behind foliage, can be hard to find and follow.

Getting Through Security

Security lines normally average 20 to 30 minutes, airport executives say. Airport Deputy General Manager Jai Ferrell advises arriving three hours early for domestic and international holiday travel and checking security wait times online in advance.

Delta’s PreCheck Hack

If you have PreCheck, Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines lets you skip the main bag-check lines. Go to the domestic South Terminal's lower level. After a face scan, attach a tag and drop your bag on the conveyor.

Connecting Like a Pro

Trips between each of the seven Plane Train concourse stops average two minutes. Ms. Ferrell says anxious connecting travelers can contact airlines via social media for real-time rebooking and flight information without standing in lines.

For Those Who Lounge

ATL has 14 airport lounges. The largest of Delta’s nine Sky Clubs is on Concourse B. It seats more than 500, has a sommelier-curated wine list and panoramic views of downtown Atlanta.

Where to Dine

ATL has over 100 restaurants. While most are national chains, there are homegrown options like Grindhouse Killer Burgers, which has airport locations at Gates T-11 and D-30.

Best Places for Drinks

Concourse E’s One Flew South, a two-time James Beard Award nominee, serves cocktails like the spicy tequila-based Subtle Heat and a classic Old Fashioned. Beer fans can sample eight local breweries at rapper Ludacris’s Chicken + Beer at Gate D-5.

Best Way to Pass the Time

The downstairs people-mover near the Plane Train glides you from Concourses A and D through an array of exhibits, from photos of Atlanta history to Zimbabwean stone sculptures and a faux rainforest with more than 24,000 LED lights.

Get Outta There

If Atlanta’s your final stop, look for orange signage pointing to Rideshare or ask friends/family to find you at the new cellphone car lot near the rental-car center. MARTA trains stop running at 1:30 a.m. weekdays and 12:30 a.m. on weekends.

Atlanta Is The World's Busiest Airport: Here's How To Survive It

Crowded lines at the airport

Brace yourself for the exhilarating whirlwind that is Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), the world's busiest airport . ATL welcomes an average of 275,000 passengers daily, connecting them to 150 U.S. destinations and over 75 international locations.

Hartsfield-Jackson isn't just bustling — it's vast. With sprawling terminals, thousands of travelers, long lines, and unpredictable flight delays, keeping your sanity at ATL requires patience, preparedness, and a generous allocation of time. As therapist Daniel Rinaldi says, "Being well-prepared can help reduce anxiety ... Make sure to arrive early, and give yourself plenty of time at the airport to avoid rushing and feeling overwhelmed." How early you need to arrive at the airport may vary by airline, but ATL recommends at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours for global adventures.

But ATL isn't just about catching flights — it's about delightful bites, retail therapy, and even admiring art. With a myriad of dining options, unique shops, daily live music, and an ever-evolving array of art exhibitions, you can do more than just survive the airport — you might even enjoy it.

Plan ground transportation ahead of time

Over 200 companies provide ground transportation for ATL. Share a shuttle, ride in style with a limo, or go traditional with a metered cab, with set fees for travel between ATL and the central business district. All these options line up in the Ground Transportation Center/West Curb (between doors W-1 and W-2) of the Domestic Terminal or outside the arrival level in the International Terminal (door A-1). For rideshare options, both Uber and Lyft are authorized to serve ATL. In the Domestic Terminal, the Rideshare Pick-up Zone is in the North Economy lot, a short walk from the North and South baggage claims. Follow the orange signs. Pick-ups in the International Terminal are on the outer curb of arrivals (exit door A-1 or A-2). Looking for a rental? Just hop on the SkyTrain to reach ATL's Rental Car Center, which operates 24/7.

For a dash of local flavor, jump aboard MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority). Seamlessly integrated within the Domestic Terminal, MARTA whisks you away to Downtown in 15 minutes. You can also ride to Midtown, Buckhead, and Perimeter with stops near most hotels, convention centers, and tourist destinations.

If you're driving to ATL, thousands of parking spaces beckon from both the Domestic and International Terminals. Stay informed with the  ATL website or tune into 830 AM for the latest space status. For travelers seeking off-site parking, the airport keeps a list of providers .

Arm yourself with airport apps

Gone are the days of anxiously squinting at overhead screens and the "Did I just miss an announcement?" panic moments. The Atlanta airport offers its own official flight-tracking service, Trak-A-Flight . From sudden schedule tweaks to unexpected delays and cancellations, you'll have timely flight alerts right at your fingertips. You can also sign up ahead of time to receive reminders about upcoming flights.

In addition to Trak-A-Flight, you might also take advantage of the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) app, MyTSA , with several features to help navigate a busy airport. Wondering how long you'll be twiddling your thumbs at security? The app's historically-based predictions will shed some light, offering a valuable planning tool to predict security checkpoint wait times. MyTSA's crowdsourced updates also provide real-time reports on security line lengths. If you're a TSA PreCheck member or considering joining, use the app to find the closest application center and get info on PreCheck lanes. MyTSA also gives up-to-date information about delays and, if needed, announcements about security developments in and around the airport.

Navigate Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with ease

ATL is a sprawling metropolis of an airport. But don't let its size intimidate you! It's well-designed with good signage. ATL is a grand corridor bookended by two major gates: the Domestic Terminal and the International Terminal. Nestled between these giants are seven bustling concourses.

If you're outside security, the airport offers a free Terminal-to-Terminal shuttle. This picks up at the Ground Transportation Center/West Curb on the Domestic side and outside the arrivals level on the International side. Shuttles run approximately every 10 minutes and the ride between terminals usually takes about 12 minutes.

Already cleared security? The Plane Train is an underground marvel that darts between the terminals and stops at each concourse. Trains come frequently, usually every two minutes. Clear announcements are made before each stop, ensuring you know when to get off. The trip from the Domestic to the International Terminal is only a few minutes. If you're not in a rush, there's also a pedestrian walkway that runs parallel to the Plane Train. This can be a quieter, less crowded option, especially during peak travel times.

Before you dash off to the airport, swipe and zoom through interactive maps on the airport's official website . You can filter by category to locate everything from bars to barbershops. It's worth taking time to familiarize yourself with the airport's general layout, along with key locations such as your departure gate, restrooms, and where to snag your next caffeine fix.

Prepare for security

Before you pack, do a quick check with the MyTSA app or the TSA website to familiarize yourself with the latest TSA guidelines . If you're wondering which security line is the quickest at ATL, don't rely on guesswork—the airport's TSA Security Wait Times feature provides real-time wait times for each checkpoint.

If possible, dress for success with slip-on shoes and avoid the worst things to wear through security , such as bulky clothing, heavy jewelry, belts, or any clothing with large metal components. Triggering an alarm only slows things down and adds more stress. Don't forget to wear socks—it's no fun to walk barefoot through security screening while your shoes are in a bin.

Organize your carry-on with the screening process in mind. Electronics larger than a cellphone, such as laptops and tablets, should be easily accessible since you'll need to place them in a separate bin. The same goes for your liquids bag (remember the 3-1-1 rule: 3.4 oz or less per container, 1 quart-sized bag, 1 bag per traveler).

Apply for TSA PreCheck

Wish you could flash-forward past those long security lines waiting for you at the world's busiest airport? TSA PreCheck grants that wish with an expedited screening process for pre-approved travelers. With TSA PreCheck, most travelers breeze through security in under ten minutes. Forget the rigmarole of juggling shoes, belts, and light jackets. And say goodbye to the tedious dance of pulling out your laptop or mini shampoo bottles. With TSA PreCheck, everything can stay put.

To apply, visit the official TSA website and fill out an application. This typically takes about 5 minutes. After completing an online application, you'll schedule a 10-minute appointment for an in-person background check and fingerprinting. If approved, you'll receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) and be eligible for expedited screening. While the length of time it takes to get approved for TSA PreCheck is typically just three to five days, some applications take up to 60 days.

As of October 2023, new enrollment for TSA PreCheck is $78 for five years. Or, if you're savvy with your credit cards, you might not pay a dime. The TSA lists dozens of credit cards that include a perk to cover the TSA PreCheck application fee. More than 200 airports and 90 airlines participate in TSA PreCheck, so you'll reap its benefits beyond just ATL.

Ready yourself for crowds

Even seasoned travelers can be overwhelmed by the size and number of people at ATL. The constant hum of thousands of travelers, intercom announcements, and the general bustle can be draining. Save yourself from that eardrum assault! A pair of noise-canceling earphones is your passport to peace. Dive into your favorite tunes, binge on podcasts, or simply savor the silence.

Even in silence, it's easy to become overwhelmed amidst the throngs of people. Ground yourself with a simple exercise — plant your feet, take a breath, and do a sensory roll call. What do you see? Hear? Feel? Smell? And, if you're munching on an airport pretzel, what do you taste? This is like a mini-vacation for your brain. But don't mistake a grounding exercise for an excuse to stay glued to your gate. With Trak-A-Flight or your airline's app in hand, you'll receive real-time flight updates, so you can confidently venture beyond your gate. Find quieter nooks and discover endless amenities, such as shops, spas, and dining options.

Seeking ultimate peace? Head over to the Interfaith Airport Chapel, your oasis amidst the airport bustle. Post-security locations include Concourse E Chapel and Concourse F Chapel. If you're pre-security, the Domestic Terminal has a slice of tranquility in the chapel by the atrium. Whether you're seeking spiritual solace, or just a hushed corner to gather your thoughts, these sanctuaries are there for you.

Stay hydrated

Travel often plays havoc with our hydration habits. Whether you're the "I'm not drinking so I won't have to visit that teeny-tiny airplane bathroom" kind or you're just thrown off by a change in routine, it's easy for water to get sidelined. Plus, with Atlanta's humidity playing the sneaky villain (especially during the steamy summer months), dehydration can sneak up on you faster than a jet on the runway. Fatigue, headache, dark urine, and dry mouth might be your body's SOS for H2O.

If possible, bring an empty water bottle to take advantage of free touchless Oasis bottle-filling stations throughout the airport. Alternatively, Coca-Cola Vending machines have got your back (and your thirst) with bottled water in every concourse, available 24/7.

Bored of water? Chomp on foods with high water content, such as oranges and strawberries. Or drink your fruit — you'll have plenty of airport smoothie options, such as Atlanta-based Freshens in Concourses A, B, D, and E.

Prevent getting hangry

Hunger is one of the sneakiest culprits of mid-journey mood meltdowns. With flight delays, layovers, and navigating an airport that's 4,700 acres, it's easy to forget about the most basic of human needs. But amidst a sea of already-tense travelers, the last thing anyone wants is a case of hangry — that irritable mood brought on by hunger.

Before you set foot in Hartsfield-Jackson, scout its dining landscape. From quick bites to leisurely meals, the choices are aplenty. A little prep can save you from a frantic food dash across terminals. If you're pressed for time, grab a protein-rich snack, like a hard-boiled egg. Protein keeps you full and focused.

Do brace yourself, because eateries at ATL often have long lines. Avoid the wait by packing your own protein delights, such as trail mix and protein bars. And a pro tip from Dietician Molly Kimball : carry protein powder and mix it into your coffee after security check. It's an instant mood-lifter, ensuring you board your flight satiated and smiley.

Optimize electronics for the airport

ATL boasts one of the top ten fastest free airport Wi-Fi connections globally, as vouched for by Speedtest by Ookla . Whether you're passing the time during a layover or waiting out a flight delay, ATL ensures you can binge your favorite series or make that video call without a hitch.

To take advantage of this strong Wi-Fi, come to the airport with devices fully charged and grab any opportunity you can to charge your devices. Atlanta's airport has charging stations, but they might be inconveniently located or crowded. Your own portable charger can be a lifesaver so you don't have to share with hundreds of other power-hungry travelers. You can also bring a power strip to the airport and stretch the available ports.

You can also optimize your device to make your battery last longer, which can be a lifesaver on travel days. Dim your screen or activate adaptive brightness. Unused apps can be power-hungry, so shut them down. Push notifications? Limit them. And if your device features a power-saving mode, let it do its magic.

Help prevent lost luggage

Ever had that sinking feeling of standing alone at the baggage carousel while everyone else collects their luggage and leaves? Lost luggage is one of the most stressful and time-consuming travel headaches. Rest assured, most luggage arrives safely. According to a 2022 U.S. Department of Transportation report , out of a whopping 470 million bags boarded on domestic flights, only a tiny fraction (6.4 out of 1,000) met an unfortunate fate. But if it's your bag that goes MIA , you probably won't be in the mood for statistics.

Although luggage fate is uncontrollable, there are a few things you can do to help your bag enjoy the trip as much as you do. Avoid overstuffing your suitcase. Heavy bags can get jammed in those pesky conveyor belts. Still have that sentimental sicker from your honeymoon to Greece? Rip it off! Old stickers and tags can misguide your luggage to a whole adventure without you. Also, consider tracking your luggage with an AirTag or SmartTag .

If possible, get to the airport early to ensure your checked bags have ample processing time. This is especially important in a large hub like ATL, where bags may need to travel hundreds of acres to board the correct plane. If you're stopping in Atlanta to catch a connecting flight , try to give your bags (and yourself) a breather with a longer layover. Tight connections can mean your bags are rushing just as much as you are to catch that next flight.

Carry on essentials and comfort items

With glaring lights, a cacophony of announcements, and endless lines, massive airports like ATL can feel less like a gateway to a new destination and more like a test of endurance. And much of that test happens while you're away from your checked baggage, akin to leaving a piece of yourself behind. But what if we changed the narrative? Instead of dreading the wait, let's transform this pause into an extension of your trip — a cozy, relaxed interlude before the main event. With a bit of preparation and some strategic carry-on packing, it's possible.

Beyond your obvious travel basics — passport, travel documents, credit cards — don't forget any medications you might need (note TSA's special instructions for liquid medication ). Add some over-the-counter painkillers just in case. Being able to freshen up with simple essentials like face wipes, toothbrush, and toothpaste can work wonders to boost your mood.

As for attire, think layers. The indoor temperature of ATL may contrast with Atlanta's outdoor weather. Comfortable socks and an easily removable soft jacket are advisable. And a cozy scarf isn't just a fashion statement — rolled up, it's an impromptu pillow. Sit back, relax, and enjoy some entertainment. Whether it's that e-book you've been meaning to start or the next binge-worthy show, download digital enjoyment ahead of time so you'll be ready to dive in. Time will fly, almost literally!

Know there's help available

If you're ever lost or unsure, don't hesitate to reach out to airport staff members — that's what they're there for! ATL is on a mission to exceed customer expectations and has been awarded numerous service awards, including the 2023 Airports Council International Airport Service Quality Award: Best Airport at Arrivals Globally.

As you make your way through the airport, you'll likely encounter the diligent Customer Experience Representatives (CXRs). These incredible folks are stationed throughout the airport, ever-ready to lend a helping hand. Whether you have queries about your flight, are curious about ground transportation options, need some info on the Atlanta area, or just want to chat, they've got you covered. Keep an eye out for the striking lime-green vests they don — a clear sign that help is at hand.

The airport experience is further enhanced by the heartwarming presence of the Hartsfield-Jackson Volunteers. This passionate group is the embodiment of Southern hospitality, always enthusiastic to welcome visitors with their trademark warmth and friendliness. Donning vibrant red vests or cozy red sweaters, they'll provide information and direction to make your airport experience more welcoming. On the off-chance that something unexpected does pop up, rest assured that ATL has comprehensive health and safety services throughout the airport.

Enjoy the experience

Atlanta's airport is more than just a transportation hub — it's a destination in and of itself. The airport houses numerous installations and exhibits, highlighting everything from Atlanta's rich history to global artistry. Immerse yourself in "Good Trouble: A Tribute to Congressman John Lewis" located pre-security in the Domestic Atrium. This tribute brings to life the legacy of an iconic leader through photographs, videos, and touching artifacts. Don't miss the Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Wall in Concourse E, reminding travelers of the city's pivotal role in shaping history. The impressive "Flight Paths" exhibit, located in the Transportation Mall between Concourse A and B, simulates a walk through a forest, complete with bird sounds and overhead canopy, providing a serene reprieve from the usual airport chaos. The airport is an evolving canvas, with rotating art exhibits that showcase both local and global talents.

The shopping experience includes the expected luxury brands and duty-free shops, along with local specialties. Have you ever tasted the mouth-watering Original Pralines from Savannah's Candy Kitchen? You can find those, along with other candy made from scratch, in Concourses A, B, and C.

And if the rhythm of your journey gets too hectic, let live music serenade you as artists perform daily across the concourses. Or, transform your layover into a spa day. Multiple locations of XpresSpa await to pamper you with massages, nail care, and rejuvenation services.

Things to Do

Whether you’re visiting the ATL Airport District for business or pleasure, it’s always a pleasure to explore.

We’ve got so much cool stuff to check out. With good times stretching out from the heart of the District through downtown Atlanta and into the greater metro area, you’ll find it’s all just a few minutes’ ride from your District home base. Our attractions and activities span history and pop culture, recreation and professional sports, R&R and shopping—so you’ll never be at a loss for something to text home about. And that’s before you venture out into the big city.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy right here, no matter what time of year you visit. With temperate weather year-round, North Georgia doesn’t have much of an off-season. The District is always alive with seasonal festivals and events, including several Spin the District cycling events (which double as block parties), monthly classic car shows, neighborhood food festivals, farmers markets, music events and holiday celebrations throughout the year, and so much more. Check out our events schedule to see what’s coming up. You’re bound to discover something great.

Then there are all the “anytime” activities. Right here in the ATL Airport District, we’ve got one-of-a-kind attractions like the Delta Flight Museum , the Chick-fil-A Backstage Tour , the Porsche Experience Center , and the Hapeville Depot Museum . Take a tour, meet a cow, fly a plane—for the low price of admission, the District is your ticket to unique experiences.

When it comes to history and culture , the District is overflowing. What can’t be constrained by our many arts centers spills out onto our mural-lined streets. More than just unique Insta opportunities, our public art embodies the stories of our community and gives a voice to local artists. Our galleries, studios and workshops are often open to the public, where you can join in or watch as professional artists, dancers, and actors hone their craft. Catch an exhibit, a show or a stand-up set, or just walk along our streets, taking in history old and new. The District is full of antebellum landmarks that share space with important moments in hip-hop history and recognizable filming locations from popular movies and TV shows. No matter what, you’ll go home with something to think about.

Sports have found a home here as well. While the District is just a few minutes’ drive from all of Atlanta’s major sports teams (the Falcons , Braves and Hawks say hi), you can also get a solid sports fix without ever leaving the neighborhood. The 5,000-seat Gateway Center Arena , right across the street from the airport , is home to the Atlanta Dream (WNBA) and the College Park Skyhawks (G-League). During basketball season, be sure to score some tix.

For those who like to keep moving, there are recreation opportunities galore here on the Southside. We have dozens of parks, trails, rec centers, sports facilities and more—even a golf course . Even a skate park . Even a velodrome , a fencing club, and some of the best bike trails in the country. It’s all right here.

Did we mention all the shopping ? Sure, plenty of places around Metro Atlanta are known for world-class shopping (especially Buckhead, yes, we know), but that doesn’t mean the District can’t hold its own. Stop by Camp Creek Marketplace and get your retail therapy session from dozens of nationwide stores or for those flying in or out, enjoy the airport's shopping & dining experience. There’s over 230,000 square feet of retail space right inside, and if you take the free ATL SkyTrain from Gateway Center, you can shop ‘till you drop even if you’re not catching a flight—all without the puzzle of airport parking.

Peruse our library of complete itineraries for every taste to help you hit the highlights while you’re here. Each can be fully customized with our Trip Builder. 10 Things To Do Near the Atlanta Airport

By Caroline Eubanks

Published June 18, 2019 Last Updated January 24, 2022

Atlanta is a sprawling metropolis, so it can be difficult to see it all, especially if you’re short on time. Sometimes overlooked by travelers, the neighborhoods around Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport have so much to offer. Enjoy the local restaurants, tour a few unique museums and learn about the companies that call this area home.

Test drive a Porsche at Porsche Experience Center

( 📷  Courtesy of Porsche Experience Center Atlanta)

Thrill-seekers will enjoy the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta in Hapeville, home to the luxury German manufacturer’s North American headquarters. Inside, you’ll find a test track where you can drive a Porsche, an auto simulator, exhibits on the company’s history with vintage vehicles and a fine dining restaurant that overlooks the track and airport runways. There’s even a hotel on the campus, the Kimpton Overland Hotel.

Sip a craft beer at Arches Brewing

Atlanta is known for craft beer, but did you know that the Airport area has a brewery, too? Arches Brewing in Hapeville is a popular hangout for local residents, especially for the brewery’s large tap room and backyard biergarten with firepits. Owned by a group of friends and former home brewers, Arches favors beers inspired by European brews, including the Queen’s Weiss hefeweizen and Southern Bel’, a Belgian pale pilsner.

See vintage airplanes at Delta Flight Museum

( 📷 Melissa McAlpine)

In College Park, visit the Delta Flight Museum in the airline’s historic hangar. Inside, you’ll see vintage aircraft and uniforms from over the years. Don’t miss the 747 purchased by company employees, the simulators and the exhibits on Delta’s corporate partnerships and sponsorships, which include the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. See it all on your own or join one of the guided tours.

Cycle at the Dick Lane Velodrome

Constructed in 1974, the Dick Lane Velodrome was inspired by one constructed for the Munich Olympics. The concrete track is banked 36 degrees and is the only velodrome to feature a park in the middle. It’s been used for many races and events over the years, including as the training facility for the Atlanta Olympics. The velodrome is also the site of one of the races for Spin the District, an annual multi-neighborhood cycling event hosted by the ATL Airport District.

Browse for produce at the Atlanta State Farmers Market

Wander the sprawling aisles of the 150-acre Atlanta State Farmers Market in Forest Park. Here you can find just about everything, including fresh Georgia-grown produce, plants and everything in between. The market is open 24/7 with both wholesale and retail sections and has a permanent restaurant inside.

Weekend Family Fun

Dining on the fly: atlanta’s best local restaurants at the airport, layover at the atlanta airport, see a movie at the starlight drive-in theatre.

There’s no better movie experience in the city than a drive-in movie at the Starlight Six, which has been in South Atlanta since 1949. The four screens now have modern digital projection systems and have two shows nightly. The entry price is $9 for adults and $1 for children, a price that gets you into both showings. Bring your own food or visit the snack bar. The drive-in also holds weekend flea markets.

Play a round at the Historic College Park Golf Course

Located just one mile from the airport, the nine-hole Historic College Park Golf Course was built in 1929. With a par 36, the facility has a driving range as well as practice greens. You don’t need tee times in advance and the dress code is laid back.

Catch a concert at Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood

Opened in 1989, the Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood has gone through a number of name changes over the years, but has always hosted big-name acts and festivals. Past shows featured Phish, Spice Girls, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It can hold 7,000 concertgoers in the seats and another 12,000 on the lawn.

Take a behind-the-scenes tour at Chick-fil-A headquarters

One of Atlanta’s most well-known companies, Chick-fil-A, started in the 1960s as the Dwarf House in Hapeville. Visitors can tour the headquarters, located in College Park, to learn about the national chain during the Chick-fil-A Backstage Tour. You’ll visit the history museum and perhaps see the production kitchen, where Chick-fil-A cooks up new recipes.

Chow down on authentic Cuban fare at Mami’s La Cubana

This humble Hapeville eatery is packed for lunch with airline and other corporate employees. Mami’s La Cubana is known for its authentic Cuban cuisine, including ropa vieja, empanadas and media noche sandwiches. It’s small on space, but well worth the wait and best enjoyed with a strong coffee.

Get Outside on the Southside

Catch some rays, catch some air, or catch the ball during an epic kickball game at any of the parks and outdoor recreation areas spread all over the Atlanta airport area. You can even catch a show at one of the many local events that take place throughout the year. Find the full list of outdoor spaces here .

Atlanta airport now limiting access to the public. Here's what you need to know

ATLANTA — Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is now limiting public access to the airport.

Channel 2′s Tom Regan was at the airport Monday, where the goal is to address the growing unhoused population at the airport and improve security.

[DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks ]

The new regulation complies with legislation City Council approved in February. The rules basically say that if you are coming into the airport, you have to have a legitimate reason to be there. You can’t loiter or panhandle or find a place to sleep.

The new regulation was apparently driven by complaints from workers and travelers.

  • 17-year-old Ga. high school athlete shot to death on his prom night

The airport and the city are now cracking down on the growing unsheltered population that usually takes refuge at the airport usually late at night, sometimes in the hundreds.

Many ride MARTA to get to the airport.

“About three trains come in full of unhoused individuals and other people mixed into that crowd, and that creates a problem at the airport,” Keith Hardrick, a homeless advocate, said.

[SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter ]

The airport has had a policy of restricting terminal access from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., but that’s now in place around the clock.

The airport said access will be restricted to ticketed passengers, individuals meeting passengers, employees, contract workers and others who have legitimate business.

Some travelers are in support of the new restrictions. They believe it will improve the security and quality of their travel.

“Overall, I guess it’s pretty good,” traveler Jenee Young said.

Others said the new restrictions are unduly harsh on a vulnerable population.

“As far as the homeless, if they are not bothering anybody, what’s the big deal?” traveler Cody Healy said.

Hardrick has helped homeless people at the airport find shelters and services. However, he said the city and airport had no choice but to take action.

“If you are spending four or five hundred dollars on an airline ticket you shouldn’t have to deal with being harassed,” Hardrick said.

The restrictions will also apply to the ATL Sky Train, the car rental center and parking decks.
