Is there anything better than looking up and seeing the Smoky Mountains in the skyline while you play mini golf, ride an alpine coaster, or walk into a gigantic replica of the Titanic? Pigeon Forge is a family friendly destination with lots of fun attractions, entertainment, and one of the best theme parks in the country – Dollywood! Best of all – you’re a hop, skip, or a jump away from the nation’s most visited National Park. If you’ve never seen it in person – it’s a life changing experience. Nothing like it! best road trips from indiana

Dayton is best known as the place that gave birth to modern aviation. The Wright Brothers called Dayton home and the city is full of historic places that will give you a front row seat to the history of the “flying machine” which is how the first airplane was trademarked. One of the original Wright Brothers bicycle shops is still in tact, and you can see an original Wright Flyer at the Carillon Historical Park. Take a ride over to Huffman Prairie Field where the brothers tested out there invention or tour the mansion where they lived. Best of all – Dayton is home to the Museum of The United States Air Force – an unbelievable airplane museum that consists of four different hangars and impossible to see in a single day. See rare military aircraft and even go on board a retired Air Force One plane. And it’s free!

Travel Time: 2h 11m / 117 miles

5. Parke County, Indiana

best road trips from indiana

Parke County, Indiana is best known as the “covered bridge capitol of the world”! Located less than than two hours from downtown Indy, you’ll find a great relaxing destination with some much needed peace and quiet. You can grab an old fashioned map (remember those?) at the local visitors center and then set out to find as many of the historic covered bridges as you can, making it a perfect romantic getaway. Consider booking a room or campsite at Turkey Run State Park, Indiana’s most popular state park, for your home base. They offer brand new, minimalist cabins as well. The park has plenty of great hiking trails for all skill levels.

7. St. Louis, Missouri

Soda Fountain at Union Station

The Gateway to the West is more than just the country’s tallest national monument. (630 feet high, in case you were wondering – and yes, you can take a tram all the way up to the top.) Saint Louis is home to Forest Park, which is bigger than New York’s Central Park, and full of free attractions like the Saint Louis Science Center, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum and yes – the award winning Saint Louis Zoo, which is only one of two major zoos in the America with free admission. Enjoy a great meal on “The Hill” – the last still thriving Italian neighborhood in America and take your kids to City Museum – one of the most bizarre, yet incredible places in the midwest. Tour Budweiser, take a stroll at the Missouri Botanical Garden, or try some St. Louis style thin crust pizza or toasted ravioli! Yum!

8. Springfield, Illinois

best road trips from indiana

This is a great road trip idea for history lovers – Abe Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois! You can spend an entire weekend exploring where Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature, worked as a self-taught lawyer, and lived with his family. You can tour the only home he ever owned which is beautifully preserved along with the neighborhood where he lived. Lincoln is also buried in the local cemetery beneath a massive tomb. You can also enjoy some Route 66 history and tour the state’s capitol building as well as the Governor’s mansion.

Travel Time: 3h 11m / 213 miles

9. Holland, Michigan

best road trips from indiana

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!)  Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

Bill’s Advice:  I eat a lot of pizza when I’m on the road and Holland has one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to.  It’s called  Fricano’s Pizza  and sometimes, I have dreams about it.

Travel Time: 3h 40m / 235 miles

10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

best road trips from indiana

Famous for having more bridges than any other U.S. city, Pittsburgh is a terrific destination for a weekend or extended getaway. You can take in a baseball game with beautiful views of the Sixth Street Bridge, take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline, or visit the city’s quirky bicycle museum. If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers, Pittsburgh was his home town and you can spend a day exploring all things Mr. Rogers – including seeing the very sets from the iconic television show and his puppets!

Travel Time: 3h 10m / 197 miles

12. Cincinnati, Ohio

best road trips from indiana

There’s a lot to see and do in Cincinnati! One of my favorite museums – The American Sign Museum is alone worth the road trip. Downtown you’ll find some fun places to eat, catch a game at Great American Ballpark, or take a stroll along the Ohio river on the beautiful hiking and biking trails. If you take a short drive (or walk) across the bridge downtown you’ll wind up in Covinginton, Kentucky. This historic town that was once notorious for gangsters is now a lovely area with dining and shopping, plus great views looking back at the Cincinnati skyline. Speaking of “skyline” – Cincy’s famous chili is available all over town. (I’m not personally a fan – but a lot of people like it!)

Travel Time: 1h 42m / 112 miles

13. Madison, Wisconsin

best road trips from indiana

The state capital of Wisconsin is constantly ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S.  Madison is also a fun college town with lots of things to do – though its best to visit in the spring and summer months if you hate cold weather.  My favorite thing to do in Madison is the Dane County Farmer’s Market that wraps around the entire Capitol building. Patrons all walk in one direction to shop for fresh produce and local goods.  Of course, State Street is full of action – all seven blocks between downtown and the University of Wisconsin campus. You can find food (140 restaurants!) unique stores, and plenty of entertainment day or night.

Bill’s Advice:  Tour the beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol, and enjoy some time relaxing near the water.  (You can ice skate in the winter months)  For a quirky stop – a short drive to Middleton will get you to the  National Mustard Museum !

Travel Time: 4h 51m / 330 miles

14. Nashville, Tennessee

best road trips from indiana

Music City USA has seen a major boom in recent years. Along with the treasures that have always made Nashville great, there are brand new attractions and businesses making it one of the hottest cities in the south.  For country music fans – the Hall of Fame is a great bet, along with a tour of the  Ryman Auditorium  and  Grand Ole Opry.   These days, Broadway is a happening street akin to Times Square in New York City.  Bars, live music, and plenty of good people watching.  Check out an exact replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, and be sure to try some authentic Nashville Hot Chicken while you’re in town!

Bill’s Advice:  Nashville is great for a weekend but definitely plenty to do for an extended visit or vacation.  It’s also one of the most popular cities on the list – which means it’s going to be busy.  Brace yourself for crazy traffic, higher than average prices to park your car downtown, and lots of people.  To save a bit of money, consider staying in one of the many communities that surround Nashville or out near the airport.  If you’re a country music fan – the George Jones Museum is a must! If not, you can still check out the rooftop bar on the fourth floor with great views of the river.

Travel Time: 4h 10m / 288 miles

15. Door County, Wisconsin

Al Johnson's Door County

One of the prettiest destinations in all of the midwest is Door County, Wisconsin. With its welcoming small communities, abundance of outdoor adventure, and of course – cherries galore – it makes for a perfect road trip. Be sure to check out the goats walking atop the roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish restaurant in Sister Bay, take a sunset cruise from Fish Creek to capture some beautiful photos, and of course if your timing is right – pick some fresh cherries in one of the many orchards in the area.

Bill’s Advice: Be sure to pop into the Wisconsin Visitors Center and pick up a cheese map! You’ll find every location for fresh cheese and cheese curds all of the state. It’s fantastic!

16. Louisville, Kentucky

best road trips from indiana

Of course most people know Louisville as the place where the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made, but that’s just the start!  Downtown Louisville offers a wide variety of attractions from the Muhammad Ali Center to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place.  For an adventure – try out the world’s only underground zip line at Louisville Mega Cavern or a cruise on the historic Belle of Louisville.  Lots of great restaurants for all tastes and cool places to stay including 21c and The Galt House Hotel.

Bill’s Advice:  Louisville is a great weekend trip!  If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, pay your respects to Col. Sanders himself.  His grave site is a short drive from downtown.  Just follow the yellow line at Cave Hill Cemetery and you’ll find it.  Don’t be surprised if you see a bucket of chicken sitting on the tombstone.  No, seriously.

Travel Time: 1h 43m / 113 miles

17. Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa

best road trips from indiana

Talk about getting your bang for the buck – how often do you get four destinations packed into a single stop?  The Quad Cities is made up of five towns that share the Illinois-Iowa border.  (Yes, “quad” makes no sense as there are five and not four – but believe me, they know.)  It’s best known as the world headquarters for John Deere, and visitors can tour multiple historical spots that tell the story of the famous company.  Take a quick side trip up to LeClaire on the Iowa side to see where the show American Pickers began.

Bill’s Advice:  Try some Whitey’s Ice Cream while you’re in the region because it’s amazing!  It is seriously so good that it’s the first thing I want to do when I pass through the region.  I’ve interviewed the family that owns it – and they’re very nice!

Travel Time: 4h 30m / 306 miles

18. Fort Wayne, Indiana

best road trips from indiana

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.

Travel Time: 1h 57m / 126 miles

19. Indiana Dunes National Park

best road trips from indiana

So let’s be honest, Indiana isn’t exactly a great place to live if you crave frequent road trips to the ocean. Florida? California? Better save some money for gas. However, it’s an easy trip to some of the beaches along beautiful Lake Michigan. Often underrated are the northern beaches of the midwest which are often less crowded, cleaner, and have sunsets that are just as beautiful. You can check out:  Indiana Dunes  for info on places to stay and things to do in the region. You can sit back and relax, rent a paddle board or kayak and watch your kids burn off energy running up and down the impressive sand dunes.

Travel Time: 2h 16m / 153 miles

20. Columbus, Ohio

best road trips from indiana

Columbus, known to locals as “C-Bus” is the capitol city of Ohio. It’s been going through major growth over the last decade and is a destination worthy of a road trip. The sprawling downtown is easily accessible with the new CBUS Circulator, free to use for visitors. Check out the Short North Arts District for galleries, dining, and locally owned shopping. Local attractions include the Franklin Conservatory and Botanical Garden, the COSI Science Museum, Columbus Art Museum, and the Columbus Zoo which is one of the best in the country. Be sure to take a free tour of the Ohio state capitol building as well!

Smack dab in America’s Heartland, Indianapolis’ central locale to five different states and local destinations offers endless weekend road trip possibilities.

As a city, Indianapolis has a lot going on. Home to a thriving sports and outdoor-loving culture, top things to do include experiencing the epic Indy 500, catching a Colts game at the Lucas Oil Stadium, and exploring the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. The city’s food and bar scene is poppin’, where fried and meaty dishes are almost always served alongside a cold craft brew.

But when boredom strikes, as it inevitably does, Indianapolis has some pretty exciting weekend road trips that can cure any case of the travel itch. The state is nicknamed the “Crossroads of America” afterall, thanks to its unique location at the intersection of four Interstate Highways. That means it’s all too easy to escape the bustle of the city when needed.

So the next time you’re feeling the urge to escape, here’s a list of the best weekend road trips from Indianapolis.

1. Indiana Dunes National Park

road trips from indianapolis - indiana dunes

For a bit of fresh air, head on over to Indiana Dunes National Park , a protected sand dune ecosystem along the southern tip of Lake Michigan. The park has about 50 miles of hiking trails that meander through 15,000 acres of protected wetlands, flowering prairies, and forests. In the summer many come to camp out and enjoy the beach, where on a clear day you can catch sight of the Chicago skyline.

If the national park’s Dunewood Campground is full, the neighboring Indiana Dunes State Park offers more camping and recreation opportunities. The state park portion of Indiana’s dunes is also where you’ll find the famous 3 Dunes Challenge, a short but surprisingly tough hike that takes you up and over the area’s three tallest sand dunes.

The Black Hills in South Dakota is one of the best places for a road trip in the Midwest.  There is so much to see and do, you could easily spend months here, but for a shorter trip, 7-10 days would be great.

Rapid City is probably the best place to fly in and out of for a Black Hills trip. I would start with a couple of days in Badlands National Park .  Spend the night in Wall, visit Wall Drug and the Badlands from here, then head over to Wind Cave National Park.

Spend a night or 2 in Hot Springs to easily access the park where you can do some hiking, look for bison, and do a cave tour. Make a stop at the Mammoth site while you’re here, too.

Finally, head to Keystone for a few days. This is the perfect base for exploring the Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park area.

Some of the must-do activities here are visiting Mount Rushmore (of course), driving Iron Mountain Road , driving the Needles Highway, driving the Custer Wildlife Loop Road, hiking Cathedral Spires Trail, and relaxing at Sylvan Lake. If you want a little side trip, you can easily visit Devils Tower in Wyoming, too.

Chicago to St. Louis road trip

Bean in Chicago

Recommended trip: 4-6 days

Driving from Chicago, Illinois to St. Louis, Missouri should be on any midwest road trip. This journey is part of Route 66, one of the original highways in the United States. Route 66 was the primary route for people wishing to move west. Opt to spend one day driving this four and a half-hour drive, or break it up and spend the night in Springfield, Illinois.

For this journey, start in Chicago. Make sure to spend at least 3 days in Chicago. Stay in the centrally located Downtown/River North area. Do not miss the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum.

Grab some pictures at “The Bean” in Millenium Park. Daredevils can opt for “The Edge” experience at the Skydeck or the Tilt Experience at the John Hancock Building.

In the morning depart Chicago to drive south towards Springfield, the capital of Illinois . Stop by the capitol building and take a free tour of the building.

Visit Abraham Lincoln’s grave at Oak Ridge Cemetery and then visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Grab a custard at Krekel’s before heading onward to St. Louis, Missouri.

skiing on Boyne Mountain

Recommended trip: 2-3 days

Ready for a fantastic Midwest road trip? Regardless of the time of year, driving from Indianapolis, Indiana to Boyne City, MI is a perfect way to enjoy a long weekend.

Day one, you’ll want to get up early and head to Lansing, MI. It’s about 3.5 hours from Indy, so if you time it right, be sure to stop for lunch at Soup Spoon Cafe – a flight of soup is a fun way to start your mini-vacation. Next, if you have younger kids, head over to the Impression 5 Science Center – they’ll love the full sensory experiences.

After the museum, finish your drive north and check-in at Boyne Mountain for the night. Enjoy a full day of exploring Boyne Mountain and nearby Boyne City the next day. If it’s winter, hit the slopes for a little skiing or even tubing.

If it’s summertime, enjoy hiking, ziplining, or swimming. Downtown Boyne City is situated right on Lake Charlevoix and the town is full of delicious restaurants such as Cafe Sante and Red Mesa as well as unique local boutiques.

Leave Boyne Mountain, and head over to Petoskey for your final day. Start it off right with amazing bagels and donuts at Johann’s Bakery and then hurry over to the main Kilwins location for a factory tour. Kilwin’s offers free tours Monday – Friday every half-hour from 10 – 4:30, and each one ends with a decadent chocolate treat.

After the tour, spend a little time poking around downtown Petoskey for lunch and to pick up a few Michigan souvenirs before heading back to Indianapolis.

Central Iowa road trip

Iowa state capitol building

We highly recommend taking a road trip through Central Iowa. You’ll pass through  Des Moines , Iowa’s capital and other smaller towns that have some fun and interesting attractions.

Heading east along I-80, your first stop should be the town of Winterset. It’s famous for having the  actual  bridges of Madison County. Six of the original 19 covered bridges in Madison County have been preserved just outside of town. Winterset is also the birthplace of John Wayne. There is a museum dedicated to him, with lots of personal and movie memorabilia.

Continuing east, you reach Des Moines. We love this artsy city! It’s easy to find street art there and downtown has a 4.4-acre sculpture park that is free to the public. There’s also a really lovely botanical garden in Des Moines.

Of course, visiting the Capitol Building is a must. You can do a free self-guided tour and marvel at the building’s incredible architecture.

The next stop on your road trip should be the town of Grinnell. Home to Grinnell College, they have a small but impressive art museum on campus.

Grinnell is also the home of one of eight “jewel-box” banks built by legendary architect Louis Sullivan. He is considered the father of modern American architecture and mentored Frank Lloyd Wright. The bank is beautiful, with large stained-glass windows and pink Tennessee marble floors.

Loess Hills Scenic Byway (Missouri to Iowa)

Loess Hills road trip overlook

The Loess Hills Scenic Byway takes its travelers through the most extensive loess (essentially, ancient wind-blown silt deposits) outside a remote region of China! While the byway officially starts at the Iowa state border, the hills themselves run north-south a bit east of the Missouri River, from St. Joseph, Missouri to the Sioux City, Iowa area, passing near Omaha, Nebraska in the middle of the journey.

Each of these cities are destinations in their own right, and combined, they make a road trip full of scenic views and ample entertaining places to stop along the way.

In St. Joe, Missouri, local museums provide fascinating looks at the history of the Pony Express, the art of Thomas Hart Benton (often depicting loess hills!) and the life of the nefarious Jesse James. Near Mound City, Missouri, visit the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge to see waterfowl and bald eagles.

The Hitchcock Nature Center near Omaha and the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center in Sioux City provide more information about the unique geology, flora, and fauna of the Loess Hills along with opportunities for hiking, boating, and more!

For ideal cruising food, try Billy Boy Drive-through just a few miles from the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center in Soiux City for a burger and a shake!

Minneapolis to omaha.

midwest road trip ideas

Recommended trip: 4-5 days

Get a nice mix of cities and wide open spaces on a Midwest road trip from Minneapolis to Omaha. Starting in Minneapolis, you’ll want to spend 1-2 days visiting the lakes, restaurants and of course, checking out the Mall of America .

Visit the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden in downtown and grab an ice cream cone at Izzy’s Ice Cream . The largest mall in North America (Mall of America) is a whole lot more than shopping, too. With an indoor amusement park, it’s the perfect activity for any weather.

Then hit the road! Next stop: Northwestern Iowa. Stop in Estherville, Iowa for a rustic winery , experience an 80-year old swinging bridge or to visit the site of the largest known meteorite seen crashing into North America.

You could stay in Esterville for the night, or head about half an hour west to Lake Okoboji. In Okoboji, Iowa you’ll find shopping, dining and a bunch of water activities , of course! Try the Arnold’s Park Amusement Park or live music after a day on the water.

Next on this Midwest road trip is Sioux City, Iowa. Grab lunch or dinner at the Fourth Street Historic District in downtown Sioux City , catch a show at the Orpheum Theatre or visit Palmer’s Old Tyme Candy Shoppe for a sweet treat before leaving town.

Omaha, Nebraska is the final destination on this Midwest road trip itinerary. You’ll want to spend 1-2 days visiting this fun city. Omaha is known as the silicone prarie, a tech hub that’s family-friendly, yet trendy enough to support a vibrant art scene and plenty of outdoor space.

One of the best things to do in Omaha is to visit the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium , It’s the largest tourist attraction in the state, and regularly competes with the San Diego Zoo as the #1 zoo in the country! It really is that fantastic!

Check out North America’s largest indoor rain forest, feed the giraffes, walk under sharks in the aquarium and watch the animals in the world’s largest indoor desert dome. Tip: be sure to buy your tickets in advance online and arrive early to avoid the crowds as best as you can.

Get a good tour of the city while taking fun photos at the most Instagrammable places in Omaha . Spend some time wandering the Lauritzen Gardens or check out the Fun-Plex Waterpark.

For some mystery check out the Joslyn Castle , and for some history visit the Lewis and Clark Landing. The Old Market in downtown is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat after a long day touring the city.

Duluth to Grand Marais, Minnesota

lake superior road trip

Recommended trip: 1-2 days

A Minnesota road trip on Highway 61 between Duluth and Grand Marais will offer you amazing views of Lake Superior, numerous options for a delicious bite to eat, and some can’t miss attractions .

As you leave Duluth, choose the 24-mile scenic route to Two Harbors, and take in the view of Lake Superior along the way. In Two Harbors you can walk along the breakwater to the lighthouse, and watch the ore ships coming and going. Enjoy a local brew at Castle Danger Brewery after doing some shopping in Agate Bay.

Just north of Two Harbors is Betty’s Pies and you don’t want to miss stopping here ! This is a full service restaurant, but they also have a walk up counter where you can order their famous pie. The pie flavors change every day, but you definitely want to try the Great Lakes Fruit Pie . This pie is filled with blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, apples, and rhubarb and it is one of a kind.

It is 11 miles to the next stop, in Castle Danger, but get your camera ready because you’ll be driving through 2 large tunnels, and the exits of both perfectly frame Lake Superior.

Castle Danger is home to Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse State Parks. You can learn a little history of the area while touring the lighthouse and take a hike down the hillside to dip your toes in the cool Lake Superior water.

Gooseberry Falls State Park has 5 waterfalls that you can hike to, and a very nice visitor center to buy some souvenirs at.

Along the remaining 72 miles to Grand Marais, take the time to stop at a beach or two to hunt for agates. The beaches along the North Shore are loaded with agates and it’s fun to find a few to bring home.

The city of Grand Marais has a main street full of local shops that ends on the shore of Lake Superior.  The beach is a popular spot to watch the water, and to eat a delicious donut from World’s Best Donuts or maybe you’ll want a slice of thin crust pizza from Sven and Ole’s.

Grand Marais is also the start of the Gunflint Trail. This is a 57-mile paved roadway that ends in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area near the border of Ontario.

This 110 mile road trip between Duluth and Grand Marais can be made in one day, but why not take your time and really discover the beauty of Lake Superior and the North Shore.

Midwest road trip: Missouri Route 66

Missouri Route 66 road trip

While most people think of a  Route 66  Road Trip as starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica, you don’t need to take two weeks and traverse half the country to get in a taste of the Mother Road. Instead, you can pick a portion and explore it in-depth.

Missouri has a great stretch of Route 66 right here in the Midwest. It starts in the northeast crossing over from Illinois into St. Louis and ends at the Oklahoma border after passing through Joplin.

Obviously the most iconic site on Missouri’s portion of Route 66 is the Gateway Arch, which practically welcomes you onto the road. Make sure to tour Meramec Caverns , see the one-room jail in Cuba, and explore the interesting history of Carthage.

Take advantage of the fun roadside kitsch of the route and get out at as many stops as you can. A real Route 66 road trip means you need to spend a few nights in the state’s retro motels and enjoy some diners and dive bars.

Madison to Spring Green, Wisconsin

Madison WI road trip Midwest

One of the most exciting small cities in the Midwest is  Madison, Wisconsin . It has a wonderful dining scene and miles of shoreline and bike trails.

A culmination of a college-town and a bustling city, Madison is also home one of America’s most beloved architects: Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright used Madison and its neighborhoods as a canvas, where visitors can see his many designs come to life. Although several of Madison’s Wright-designed houses are private residences, designs like the First Unitarian Meeting Houses and Monona Terrace are must-see spots for any architectural buffs! Both buildings are just a short 10-minute drive away.

If you want to see more of the city’s art scene , visit either the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art or the Chazen Museum of Art! Both museums boast both Wisconsin-based artists, as well as international artists too. Furthermore, admission is free for adults, making this the perfect stop for anyone that loves to travel on a budget.

While you’re in Madison we also highly recommend grabbing tacos from Matthew Danky and his exciting outpost El Grito Tacqueria.

From Madison, drive about 40 minutes to the quaint town of New Glarus , Wisconsin. The main attraction here is New Glarus Brewing, one of the most highly regarded breweries by beer snobs across the country so make sure to spend a few hours there.

New Glarus also has rich Swiss heritage. Explore and find an authentic Swiss bakery or locally made raclette and cheese fondue.

Our last stop is very enjoyable Spring Green, an hour away down winding country roads.  Frank Lloyd Wright spent the better part of his life living and working in Spring Green and maintained a school at Taliesin. Wright’s students designed many unique buildings in and around Spring Green.

Sunday 26th of September 2021

Where in Kansas and Ohio? I've spent time in Kansas City and St. Louis which may be along the way, but aren't necessarily off the beaten path. Perhaps a bit more southern, I've heard the Mark Twain National Forest and Shawnee National Forest are both gorgeous! Otherwise I've recently spent time in Sandusky Ohio, Put-in-Bay Ohio and the Lake Erie area. I'm sorry, I'm not sure I have a whole lot of suggestions for that specific route since I haven't personally done it. Best of luck on your road trip!

3. Turkey Run State Park

Turkey Run State Park is the park that I grew up exploring. We often met my grandparents here for picnics and hiking. In conjunction with nearby Shades State Park, Turkey Run is one of my favorite places in Indiana to hike .

Some of the trails involve ladders ( always cool as a kid ), canyons, bridges, and more – so quite a few unique features are perfect for a bit of a challenge. There are also picnic areas, a lovely Inn, a swimming pool, and playgrounds. Plus, it’s situated along the Sugar Creek River and such a fun place to kayak or canoe in the warmer weather.

So for this one, pack your cooler full of a delicious lunch and head over to the park for a day of exploration and enjoying nature.

Historic Towns and Cultural Gems

Next, let’s visit some of the wonderful towns with strong history and culture within a short drive from Indianapolis. First up is Madison, Indiana, a picturesque town along the Ohio River, renowned for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture and vibrant cultural scene.

Next, we turn to Columbus, a hidden architectural gem, where modern design seamlessly blends with historical charm. It’s one of my favorite spots for a day trip from Indy – I never get tired of visiting. And finally, French Lick, known for its historic resorts and scenic railway, offers a unique glimpse into Indiana’s luxurious past. Each of these towns presents a unique journey through time, combining the allure of history with the vibrancy of modern-day culture.

4. Madison, Indiana

Madison, Indiana, just about a two-hour drive from Indianapolis, is a must-visit for its charming blend of history and natural beauty. This riverfront town offers gorgeous views and plenty of activities.

From strolling along the scenic Ohio Riverwalk to exploring the vibrant Main Street lined with unique shops and cozy cafes it’s a perfect little weekend getaway. Don’t miss the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site as well as Clifty Falls State Park for a mix of historical exploration and outdoor adventure.

I’ve enjoyed more than one visit to Madison either with my family or girlfriends – it’s the perfect girlfriend’s getaway thanks to the shopping, wineries, and quaint atmosphere.

5. Columbus, Indiana

On the list of my favorite day trips from Indianapolis is Columbus Indiana. This interesting and unique town is less than an hour from Indy, yet with its world-renowned architecture and adorable downtown, feels like a world away.

There are so many fun things to do in Columbus , but you’ll definitely want to participate in some type of architecture tour to fully appreciate the city. There are also several delicious restaurants and coffee shops so plan on exploring those. If your kiddos are along, don’t miss the KidsCommons as well as The Commons downtown.

👉 My favorite place to stay in Columbus is the Hotel Indigo – with a great location and fun atmosphere, it’s always a winner.

6. French Lick, Indiana

French Lick, located just over two hours from Indianapolis, is a delightful destination for anyone looking for a blend of relaxation and entertainment. Famous for its historic resorts, including the grand French Lick Springs Hotel and the West Baden Springs Hotel the town offers luxurious spa experiences and world-class golf courses.

The French Lick Scenic Railway is a unique attraction, and if your kids are train lovers, they will enjoy scenic tours through the Hoosier National Forest. With activities like horseback riding and hiking trails, plus the nearby Patoka Lake for water-based adventures ( and a tasty winery ), French Lick is an ideal spot for a rejuvenating escape or an action-packed family weekend.

We’ve been down there many times, and I’m just waiting for the perfect winter to head down to enjoy all the Christmas activities. As beautiful as the hotels are, I can only imagine how stunning they are decorated for the holidays.

Thrills and Fun: Top Amusement Parks Near Indianapolis

If you are looking for exhilarating rides and family-friendly entertainment there are several theme parks within a few hours of Indianapolis. These amusement parks, both of which I’ve visited often, promise a day full of excitement and memorable moments.

I’ll be spotlighting Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus, Indiana, known for its free soft drinks and sunscreen, and Kings Island near Cincinnati, Ohio, famous for its record-breaking roller coasters. Both parks offer thrilling rides, waterpark fun, and attractions suitable for all ages, making them perfect destinations for a family day out or an adventurous weekend getaway.

7. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, Santa Claus

For several years when the kids were younger, we made an annual summer trip to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus, Indiana. It took us just under three hours, so to have a full day at the park, we almost always got a hotel room in nearby Tell City, Indiana.

This park is chock full of amazing roller coasters and the holiday themes for each land is a ton of fun. I also really like the water park. We’d typically spend the morning on the coasters and other rides and then hit the waterpark in the afternoon when the hot Indiana summer sun started to really blaze overhead.

Santa Claus, Indiana is another city on my list of places I’d like to visit during the Christmas season. The park will be closed, but can you think of a better Christmas town to visit than Santa Claus?

8. Kings Island, Mason, OH

Kings Island is the theme park I grew up going to. I’ve spent many a fun summer day riding the rides and enjoying the atmosphere. It’s the park that all the high school kids go to the day after prom as it’s just under two hours away, so totally doable as a day trip.

However, nearby Cincinnati is a really fun town with plenty of things to do year-round , so these days I prefer to visit Kings Island as part of a weekend getaway. Kings Island is owned by Cedar Fair, so if you’ve been to any other of their parks you know how awesome they are!

💥 Insider tip: If you love roller coasters, plan a little getaway in Ohio and spend a day at Kings Island near Cincinnati, and then drive up to Sandusky to spend a day at Cedar Point . You could add a stop in Columbus on the way and have a lovely little summer vacay!

Urban Adventures: Exciting City Getaways Close to Indianapolis

Indy is a fun city to explore in its own right, but if you feel like getting out of town, there are several other fantastic cities within two to three hours.

From the riverside location of Louisville to the big city of Chicago to the smaller city charms of Fort Wayne, you can easily enjoy a fun day trip or overnight to any of these terrific Midwest locations.

Enjoying a cup of coffee from Please & Thank You in Louisville, KY

9. Louisville, Kentucky – Horses, bourbon, and more!

Louisville, Kentucky, is an excellent city to visit within just a two-hour drive from Indianapolis, offering a vibrant mix of culture, history, and entertainment. This dynamic city is famed for the iconic Kentucky Derby, but its appeal extends year-round with a bustling arts scene, beautiful parks, and renowned food culture, especially its delicious take on Southern cuisine and unique bourbon.

When we visit, in addition to the typical tourist sites, we always spend a little time exploring the quirky neighborhoods, indulging in good food and coffee ( Please & Thank You is my personal favorite ), and thrift shopping.

You should plan on exploring the historic Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum , wander through the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory , or enjoy a stroll along the scenic Waterfront Park. For families, the Louisville Zoo and the Kentucky Science Center are huge hits. Whether you’re a sports fan, a food enthusiast, or a culture seeker, Louisville has a diverse array of attractions that make it a worthwhile destination for a road trip from Indianapolis.

👉 Consider a history and food tour like this highly-rated one in NULU to experience Louisville in a whole new way. My teens LOVE taking food tours, so it’s a great option for older kids.

View of the baseball stadium in Fort Wayne from the rooftop bar of the Hampton Inn & Suites

10. Fort Wayne, Indiana – Midwestern charm

Fort Wayne is one of my favorite cities within a few hours of Indianapolis. It takes under two hours ( closer to an hour and a half for me since I live on the north side of Indianapolis ), and we always have a fabulous time whether we visit for a day or a weekend.

Through the years, we’ve enjoyed festivals ( the Johnny Appleseed is a favorite ), explored downtown, and watched a ball game at the wonderful Parkview Field baseball stadium . Other favorites include the zoo – it is a wonderful zoo to visit, for years we took the kids there for a day trip every fall, and the DeBrand chocolate factory tour. Science Central is pretty cool for kids too, while adults love the The Landing area for its unique restaurants and bars.

On your way to Fort Wayne, consider stopping for a few hours in Roanoke . We’ve done this several times, enjoying the quaint town and the super fun tastings at Two EE’s Winery.

👉 I love staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites downtown – it has a terrific rooftop bar with a view of the Parkview Field Baseball Stadium – a really fun time on game days.

Chicago skyline

11. Chicago, Illinois – “The Windy City”

If you want a BIG city experience, then Chicago is the ideal road trip for you within three hours of Indianapolis. There are so many things to do in Chicago that you could easily spend a week exploring!

When you visit, plan on checking out at least one of the museums – The Museum of Science & Industry and Shedd Aquarium are our favorites although they are all pretty cool. Another fun thing to do is admire the city view from 360 Chicago – you can even step out on a glass floor dozens of stories above the street!

We’ve visited Chicago many times and done something different on every trip – it’s truly a place I never get tired of. If it’s your first visit, consider a Big Bus Tour as a great way to get a feel for some of the highlights of the city. Even though I’m pretty familiar with the area I still enjoy the tour as a way to get around and learn a little bit more about this terrific Midwestern city.

👉 Consider purchasing a pass from GoCity to maximize cost savings on multiple Chicago attractions!

Hidden Treasures and Unique Spots

Ready for some of the lesser-known yet equally fascinating destinations within a three-hour drive from Indianapolis? These locations offer unique experiences and a chance to explore Indiana’s diverse landscapes and cultures.

Discover the underground marvels of Marengo Cave, a U.S. National Natural Landmark, offering guided tours through its stunning cave formations. Then, experience the simplicity and charm of Amish Country in Northern Indiana, where you can learn about Amish culture, enjoy homemade crafts, and relish in the tranquility of the countryside. Both destinations provide a refreshing escape from the usual and a chance to uncover the hidden gems of the region.

Marengo Caves

12. Marengo Cave, Marengo – head down under

The last time I visited Marengo Cave was actually on a field trip with my son . It was such a fascinating experience that I’ve been planning a trip back soon. The caves are kind of out in the middle of nowhere, so it was a lengthy bus ride, but when driving it would easily be within 3 hours of Indianapolis.

One of the best parts of visiting a cave is that the temperature is the same no matter what the weather is like outside – so this could be a great option on a rainy day or cold and dreary fall or spring weekend. Make sure to take a guided tour – the history of the caves is super interesting. There aren’t a lot of restaurants nearby so you might consider packing a lunch and enjoying a picnic outside the cave area.

horse and buggy in LaGrange County Indiana

13. Indiana Amish Country – crafts, home cooking, and family fun

Over the last few years, I’ve spent several weekends checking out all the amazing things to be found in the northern part of Indiana which is home to most of the state’s Amish community. Both Elkhart County and Shipshewana in LaGrange County have a large Amish population and therefore some pretty amazing opportunities for learning (and shopping!).

Plan on enjoying delicious homemade food, maybe checking out a concert in Shipshewana, and definitely plenty of shopping! If you want to learn a little bit more about the Amish in Indiana don’t miss Menno-Hof . It’s an educational and fun way to learn more about their history.

👉My favorite place to stay when visiting the Amish Country is the Hotel Elkhart in downtown Elkhart. It’s classy, comfortable, and has a fantastic location.

Preparing for Your Road Trip

Now let’s delve into essential tips and tricks for a seamless journey. From packing essentials for different ages to strategies for keeping everyone entertained, I’ll cover all you need to know for a stress-free and enjoyable road trip from Indianapolis.

What to pack for different ages and needs

When planning a road trip from Indianapolis, it’s essential to pack appropriately for different ages. For young children, include necessities like diapers, wipes, and extra clothes, along with their favorite snacks, drinks, and entertainment options such as toys or books. Older kids and teens will appreciate having portable chargers, headphones , and items to document the trip, like cameras or travel journals.

For adults, focus on comfort and practicality: pack travel-friendly clothing, essential documents, medications, and a first aid kit. If outdoor activities are on the agenda, don’t forget gear like hiking shoes, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

And if your furry friend is joining, remember their food, leash, and a cozy blanket or bed for the journey. Always consider the weather and specific needs of your destination, such as rain gear or swimsuits, to be fully prepared for your adventure.

Road trip games bundle

Strategies to keep kids entertained and manage stops

I’ve found that keeping kids entertained on a road trip is key to a smooth journey. When my kids were little, we used to always sing road trip songs we found in books like this one ( or just remembered from campfires) , or played classic road trip games like the alphabet or license plate game.

Portable games, coloring books, or travel-sized board games can also keep them engaged. For tech-savvy kids, tablets loaded with movies and games are a great option, but remember to balance screen time with other activities.

I believe that planning your stops is equally important. I like to look for rest areas with playgrounds or picnic spots for a quick stretch and play. For a longer trip, incorporating kid-friendly attractions along the route, like zoos or museums, can break the monotony of the drive.

Snack breaks should be healthy and mess-free, so pack a cooler . And, most importantly, staying flexible with your schedule allows for impromptu stops at interesting sights, making the journey part of the adventure and keeping everyone’s spirits high.

Brief tips on ensuring a safe journey

Ensuring a safe journey starts with a well-maintained vehicle. Before heading out, check your car’s vital components: tires, brakes, lights, and fluid levels. It’s also wise to have a roadside emergency kit on hand, complete with items like jumper cables, a flashlight, and basic tools. I always check to see if I’m due for a tire rotation or oil change before a road trip.

Next, plan your route in advance and be aware of the weather conditions. Use a reliable GPS for navigation but also have a physical map ( I love my Atlas! ) as a backup. Keep an eye on traffic updates to avoid delays or hazardous roads.

Driver safety is paramount. Avoid driving when tired and share the driving responsibilities if possible. Ensure everyone in the vehicle uses seat belts and that child seats are properly installed. Obey speed limits and traffic rules, and be extra cautious in unfamiliar areas.

Stay connected but not distracted. While it’s important to have a phone for emergencies, avoid using it while driving. If you need to make a call or send a text, pull over safely first – not only is this for safety, but it’s also the law in Indiana. It’s illegal to use a phone while driving ( unless it is hands-free ).

Indiana Road Trip: 21 BEST Things to Do in So. Indiana [updated 2022]

June 15, 2016

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Driving through Indiana might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a road trip, but it’s a route that definitely should be considered.  Road trips can be a ton of fun, especially when there are stops all along the way that blends together a mix of fun, good food, adventure, history, culture, and architecture.  Southern Indiana has all of these!  If driven straight through, this Indiana road trip would only take around four hours, but there are more than enough interesting stops to spend a day or more at each of the five main areas.

best road trips from indiana

Each of the places below is only between one and three hours from Indianapolis. If you flying into or beginning from there, here are some fun things to do in Indianapolis .

Columbus, Indiana

1. miller house and gardens.

Miller House

The sunken living room of the Miller House

The Miller House is one of the finest expressions of American modernism — an integration of a bright and open floor plan home featuring stone and glass walls, skylights, and colorful textiles.  The compelling landscaping is concerned with the composition of shaping spaces… The house showcases the work of leading 20 th -century architects and designers: Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard, and Dan Kiley.

2. Zaharokos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Old fashioned ice cream parlor

Step inside Zaharakos and you’re stepping back in time to an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with stained glass Tiffany lamps, carved oak, and marble, and a double soda fountain. There’s also a museum where you can learn about soda fountains and mechanical music after you finish their famous GOM spicy sloppy joe and cheese sandwich followed by their Tin Roof Sundae.

3. Downtown

Southern Indiana Road Trip

The manor houses have gorgeous courtyards!

Downtown Columbus is perfect for an afternoon stroll.  Stop in at the Bartholomew Public Library, admire the public sculptures and architecture of First Christian Church, or my favorite – peak through the wrought iron gates into the colorful manicured courtyards of the majestic historic homes.

Brown County

4. state park.

Southern Indiana Road Trip

A romantic spot to wait for the sunset.

The park is often called “Little Smokies” because of the resemblance to the Great Smoky Mountains.  The park encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges, and ravines, and offers 20 miles of tree-lined roads, hiking trails, and scenic overlooks for some of Indiana’s best sunsets.

5. Nashville

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Downtown Nashville Visitor Center

Known as the “artist colony of the mid-west,” the charming village of Nashville is overflowing with pristine country shops selling original art, handmade crafts, and antiques. It’s one of the many charming small towns in Indiana .

Bloomington, IN

6. indiana university.

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Indiana University

No Indiana road trip would be complete without a visit to Indiana University. Founded in 1820, the Bloomington campus is the flagship campus of IU’s eight campuses statewide, and the heart of the attractive college town.  The campus is beautiful, with historic architecture, rich history, and landscaped gardens and walkways.  Tours available.

7. Lilly Library

Lilly Library

And the Oscar goes to……

The Lily Library is a treasure of rare books, manuscripts, and special collections and well worth an hour or two of exploration.  Rare copies of (my favorite!) Alice in Wonderland are juxtaposed next to other old gems like a first printed collection of William Shakespeare’s plays, and a handwritten letter by Edgar Allen Poe. There was an official Oscar that everyone insisted I should hold (gloved) as it was only appropriate.  What??? I was caught off-guard, and blushed a bit, as you can see.

8. Hoosier Ridge Fire Tower

Southern Indiana Road Trip

123 steps to the top

Southern Indiana Road Trip

View of the Hoosier Forest from the top.

The Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower stands guard over the Charles C. Deam Wilderness. It was originally built to protect the forest from wildfire.  The 100-foot steel structure was built in 1936 and was the last lookout tower for the Hoosier National Forest, manned until the 1970s.  It is no longer in use, but the adventurous can climb the 123 metal steps to the top for a spectacular panoramic view.

9. Four Winds Resort and Marina

Four Winds Resort

The marina and beach at Four Winds Resort

Four Winds is located on picturesque Lake Monroe, Indiana’s largest inland lake, about 15 minutes from downtown Bloomington. The boutique inn offers two restaurants, a private beach, an indoor/outdoor heated saltwater pool, boat and wave runner rentals, fitness center, tennis courts, basketball, and mini-golf. On the premises are also hiking and walking trails, picnic shelters, fishing, and boating.

10. Oliver Winery

Oliver Winery

The beautiful grounds at the winery.

Oliver Winery is Indiana’s oldest and largest winery with a distribution of their award-winning, fruit-forward wines to 18 states. They offer daily wine tasting and weekend tours of the production facility and cellar. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful with walking paths to soak in the atmosphere as you enjoy a glass of your favorite wine. An assortment of gourmet picnic items are available, as well as gifts and accessories.

Dubois County

11. dubois county museum, jasper.

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Mia and Caius Bender admire the animals in the museum.

47,000 sq. ft. Dubois Museum houses an extensive collection of regional collectibles, proudly curated by local volunteers who act as guides in period dress. The upper level is dedicated to military and sports, while the lower level hosts a full-size log cabin, agriculture equipment, German heritage, and a wildlife adventure room especially popular with children.

12. Jasper City Mill

Southern Indiana Road Trip

View of the mill’s water wheel

Stepping into the replica mill is like taking a step back in time. Visitors are invited to watch the process of corn being ground into cornmeal the old-fashioned way using a water wheel.  The Jasper City Mill is situated on the scenic 2.1-mile paved Riverwalk path along Patoka River, which is the best place to get a view of the working mill’s waterwheel.

13. Spirit of Jasper Passenger Train

Southern Indiana Road Trip

The dining car on the Spirit of Jasper.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to ride the rails as it was during its Golden Age, then climb aboard – for a journey or at least a tour – on the Spirit of Jasper .  The painstakingly restored train takes passengers on a luxurious and romantic dinner excursion through unspoiled Indiana countryside to fabulous French Lick.

14. Schnitzelbank

Southern Indiana Road Trip

The cozy interior of Schnitzelbank

Named as one of the Top 10 independent restaurants in Indiana, Schnitzelbank is a festive and delicious place to stop for a bite. The eatery has evolved into a destination in itself, dousing customers with its “Olde World” ambiance, delicious German dishes such as goulash, wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, and sauerbraten. To add to the fun, Sandra Chastain, decked out in traditional German garb, crooned out German folk songs while playing the accordion and then passed out song music we could all sing along.  No one went away hungry or unhappy!

15. French Lick Springs Resort

French Lick Springs Resort

The grand foyer of the French Lick Resort

Established in 1845, this upscale historic hotel is the winner of the 2015 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Award for Best Historic Hotel. The French Lick Resort is the perfect blend of history with modern amenities and offers golf, spa, hiking, biking, swimming, tennis, or shopping.

16. Monastery of Immaculate Conception

Southern Indiana Road Trip

The monastery, perched majestically on the hillside.

Also known as the “Castle on the Hill,” the Monastery in Ferdinand is home to one of the nation’s largest communities of Benedictine women who originally came from Germany to teach and run a boarding school. The highlight of the tour is Sister Christine, who guided us through the exquisite interior from her motorized wheelchair, regaling us with information as well as humorous stories of her youthful misadventures as a young Sister.

17. League Stadium

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Tom Hanks’ quote from the movie A League of Their Own

If you’ve seen the movie A League of Their Own with Geena Davis, Madonna, Tom Hanks, and Rosie O’Donnell, then you’ll recognize League Stadium in Huntingburg.  The stadium, built in 1894 was the setting for this fictionalized account of the Rockford Peaches and based on the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League , from 1943-1954.  Park Director Jim Rueger, who was an extra in the movie, told us that Coke, Columbia Studio, and Budweiser each paid one million dollars to advertise on the outfield billboards.

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Photo op outside of Snaps

Established in 1872 as “The First and Last Chance Saloon,” Snaps is a favorite with locals.  Snaps claims to hold the oldest liquor license in Dubois County and it was the first bar to be granted the honor one at the end of the prohibition. The fried gator snaps appetizers are a must-try.

Spencer County

18. abraham lincoln boyhood memorial.

Abraham Lincoln, one of the country’s most admired presidents, grew up and formed much of his character and morality in southern Indiana.  The memorial contains a typical 1980’s homestead on land owned by Thomas Lincoln, a visitor’s center with Lincoln exhibits, hiking trails, and memorials.

19. Saint Meinrad Archabby

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Our tour guide at Meinrad Abby

The Benedictine tradition came to the Midwest in the 1850s when the Swiss Abbey of Einsiedeln sent two monks to Indiana to start a new foundation. Now, Meinrad Abbey is an active community of 90+ monks who pray, work, and live together. Tours of the beautiful grounds, historic buildings, and artifacts are available at reception.

20. Lincoln State Park Beach

Southern Indiana Road Trip

The pier at Lincoln Beach

Lincoln State Park offers two scenic lakes, ten miles of hiking trails, campgrounds, cabins, and group cottages. The 1,747-acre park was established in 1932 as a memorial to Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks.

21. Holiday World

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Riding (and screaming) on super-fast Thunderbird with Erin Bender at Holiday World!

With sections depicting Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and the 4 th of July on any day, Holiday World in the town of Santa Clause has been voted the Cleanest Park in the World for more than a decade. The highlight is Thunderbird, America’s first launched wing coaster, which propels its victims at a speed from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds! Live shows with singing, dancing, and diving are held throughout the day.

As you can see, a southern Indiana road trip is a lot of fun!

I have never considered going to Indiana but your post certainly showed a lot of great sites and architecture….OK and food. Top of my list would be the Zaharokos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum for what else? A sundae! The Jasper Passenger train would be cool too.

15 Best Day Trips from Indianapolis

Indianapolis is Indiana’s state capital, making it a worthwhile destination for a trip across the country.

Being Indiana’s most populous city, it also boasts some great restaurants and bars, a tonne of great museums and art spaces, and plenty of green areas for al fresco activities.

It’s a great place for kids, too, not least because it’s home to the popular car race: the Indy 500, which is held on the Indianapolis motor speedway every year.

These attractions aside, there are plenty of places to visit in the surrounding area, all across the state, making it an excellent base from which to take some day trips.

Whether you live in Indianapolis or are just visiting, here are fifteen of the best day trip options from the city.

1. Marengo Cave

Marengo Cave

Marengo Cave offers an action-packed day away from Indianapolis, with activities ranging from guided tours of the caverns, to mining for gem stones.

The cave system was discovered in 1883 by a couple named Orris and Blanche Hiestand, and today it is a popular spot for locals.

The Dripstone Trail cave tour lasts 60 minutes, and is a mile long, while the Crystal Palace tour is just 40 minutes and a third of a mile, so this is a good option for a more relaxed visit.

Either tour will show you some jaw dropping stalactites and stalagmites, as well as other rock formations.

There’s also a great place nearby where you can hire kayaks if that takes your fancy.

2. Patoka Lake

Patoka Lake

In a landlocked state, Patoka Lake provides some much-needed refreshment in summer, and is certainly a tranquil place to spend a day out.

Kids will love floating around on the water or taking a boat trip to explore, while there’s something for the grown-ups in the nearby wineries of the region.

It’s the second-largest reservoir in the area, and if you just can’t get enough of the place on your one day there, then you can always rent a space in one of its famous floating cabins, stretching out your escape from the busy city that little bit longer.

3. Brown County State Park

Brown County State Park

Outdoor lovers will adore this gorgeous state park for a day trip option, particularly if it’s visited in the autumn when its magnificent colours come into play.

Located near the peaceful, creative town of Nashville, there are hiking trails dotted across the park just waiting to be explored, and lots of activities to be found: from horseback riding to swimming.

There’s also a nature centre and an indoor water park, meaning that the children certainly won’t be bored.

4. Pokagon State Park

Pokagon State Park

Tucked in the northeast of Indiana lies the beautiful Pokagon State Park, which has something to offer at any time of year; from the international Migratory Bird Day or the fun Mother’s Day Meander to the much-anticipated date of the annual triathlon.

There could hardly be a better place to immerse yourself in nature; whether you want to witness the first bloom of the wild flowers in spring or the crisp cold of the first dusting of snow.

Plentiful wildlife, the great outdoors and acres of space in which to roam: this is a fantastic day trip for all.

5. Indiana Dunes State Park

Indiana Dunes State Park

The Indiana Dunes are surely one of the most impressive natural phenomena to be found across the state.

You can hike, camp, sunbathe and swim across the park, among more than 2000 acres of sand dunes which are thought to have formed in the Ice Age.

Race around among the sand giants, and when the heat and dust gets too much, head over to the gorgeous Lake Michigan to take a dip and wash all that sand off.

This is an excellent day trip for all the family.

6. Shipshewana

Shipshewana, Indiana

Located just north of Indianapolis is the quaint rural town of Shipshewana, the beating heart of Amish Country.

This little community is the perfect package from the past; with Amish horse and buggies trotting around town and Amish cuisine on offer at the Blue Gate Restaurant, where you can also take in a show.

It also has the largest flea market in the Midwest: the Shipshewana Trading Place.

It really is the perfect family-friendly location for a day trip.

7. New Harmony

New Harmony, Indiana

For something a little different, why not pay a visit to this intriguing small town just south of the capital, where you can find a whole other world? Originally founded as a utopian commune, the place still has echoes of its fantastical past, including a roofless church which was intended for members of any and all religions to worship in.

There are also antique stores ready for the browsing, scattered about the streets.

Though the idea of a utopian community ultimately failed, it’s still an interesting place to spend the day.

8. Whitewater Valley Railroad

Whitewater Valley Railroad

Embrace the train spotter within you on your visit to this authentic piece of history at the Whitewater Valley Railroad.

It’s a brilliant way to learn more about the past of the local area, and this place is lauded for its dedication to historical accuracy.

Today, it also serves the purpose of a museum.

There are special event train rides throughout the year, including the Wild West Train and the Fall Foliage Flyer, so make sure to look it up before you go.

9. Wolf Park

Wolf Park, Battle Ground, Indiana

An absolute treat for the kids is a visit to Wolf Park, situated in Battle Ground, Indiana.

Visitors get the chance to learn more than you ever realised there was to know about the calls of wolves and their behaviour; while a brief wander around the park might lead to encounters with wildlife such as foxes, bison, coyotes and, of course, wolves.

The facility opened in 1972, intended as an education centre, where the behaviour of wolves and coyotes were studied, and today day trippers are educated on all this and more.

It’s certainly an interesting place to spend the day.

10. Paoli Peaks

Paoli Peaks

It might surprise outsiders to learn that Indiana has a skiing and snowboarding scene, but Paoli Peaks is certainly the spot for it in winter.

Though it might not be considered a highlight of ski locations across the US, it’s still a fun way to spend some hours, even if it’s just for a bit of tobogganing in the park.

There are also a few places to grab a hot drink, a snack, and sit back to watch the scenery unfold before you with its snowy carpet.

11. Santa Claus

Santa Claus, Indiana

Christmas comes early and stays all year round in Santa Claus, Indiana.

Everything in this pint-sized place is Santa or Christmas-themed, so if you’re feeling in need of some Christmas cheer it’s definitely worth paying a visit: it’s a guaranteed family favourite.

There’s the Lake Rudolph Campground and plenty of Christmassy shops to explore, as well as a central post office where all the letters to Santa Claus are delivered and carefully answered.

Two highlights of the town are Frosty’s Fun Centre and Santa’s Candy Castle.

12. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari

Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari

A guaranteed hit among the kids, Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari has four distinct sections, each dedicated to a different public holiday, and an adjoined water park.

Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Independence Day all have their own special space in this wonderful place, so get ready for an adrenaline rush when you try out all those rollercoasters and rides.

There’s live entertainment, rafts and water slides too, so there’s really something for everyone.

It’s very accessible, at just a short distance from the city, making it a headache-free spot to visit for the day.

13. Indiana Zip Line

Indiana Zipline Tours

For the adrenaline seekers among you, a trip to Indiana Zip Line Tours will certainly provide the goods.

Located in Crawfordsville, this is a popular attraction among both locals and tourists alike.

Get some spectacular views of the natural landscape from a bird’s perspective as you zip along through the trees.

There’s also a rock climbing wall and a gyroscope located in the same area, if zip lining doesn’t provide quite enough adventure for you.

This day trip will definitely be a hit.

14. Indiana beach

Indiana Beach

The shoreline in this relaxed amusement park takes some beating: it’s Indiana’s best beach in a state without a coastline.

It may not be by the sea, but that doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on all the water-based activities that you desire, provided on the lake.

The resort also boasts lots of different attractions; from the Den of Lost Thieves, to an amusement park with thrilling rides like the Double Shot.

This is a kid-friendly option too, so definitely consider it for a fun day’s getaway.

15. Bloomington

Bloomington, Indiana

This small but perfectly formed college town is located just southwest of the capital, and is an excellent option for a more chilled out day trip.

Its highlights are certainly hidden among the arts scene; it has galleries, museums and art exhibitions aplenty scattered about town, providing a more intellectual diversion to while away the hours spent here.

There are also some fantastic dining options.

If you’re visiting in summer, then you certainly shouldn’t miss the chance to pay a visit to the amazing Taste of Bloomington festival: a gustatory extravaganza with enough different types of food and drink to make anyone salivate.

8 Fantastic Day Trips From Indianapolis

best road trips from indiana

  • Destinations
  • Indianapolis
  • United States

I have always enjoyed traveling throughout the state of Indiana, and there are many fantastic day trips from Indianapolis that you should know about. I have found some communities that I find myself wanting to return to, over and over, after being in town less than one hour. You know you have found a fantastic town to explore when you can’t seem to get enough of everything. Each of these towns is within a 3-hour drive of Indianapolis and worth every moment of your windshield time.

I was hosted in some of these destinations as a FAM Trip guest. All opinions are my own.

1. Hendricks County

Hendricks County offers a little bit of everything, including outdoor adventure and the arts. Danville is in Hendricks County and has one of the best town squares in Indiana. The beautiful courthouse sits in the middle of town. Nearby you can dine at the Mayberry Cafe while dining on Aunt Bee’s famous fried chicken served on the Andy Griffith Show. Stock up on your fresh fruits and vegetables from Beasley’s Orchard . Nature Valley Ranch offers a great lodge with horseback riding. Sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee with a view of the lake makes this a winning choice for lodging in Hendricks County.

A unique experience is tie-dying at The Tie Dye Lab . You choose an item to tie-dye with assistance from trained staff. You will walk away with a colorful item of your choice. Glass blowing is popular at Indiana artisan Lisa Pelo’s glass blowing shop . Lisa and her team will help you create a fabulous work of art with your choice of colors. Hendricks County is a short 10-minute drive from Indianapolis, making this an easy destination to visit.

Waterfall in Richmond, Indiana.

2. Richmond

Richmond, Indiana, sits on the Indiana/Ohio State Line. The Chocolate Trail is not to be missed. Indulge in fine chocolates of all types while exploring Richmond. History comes to life at the Wayne County Historical Museum , featuring incredible antique cars and more. The charming downtown area is home to several shops that make Richmond the ideal girlfriend’s getaway. From the downtown to the parks, Richmond has a lot of areas that you can safely stroll and take in some incredible views. Summertime brings flower gardens in full bloom in several of the parks.

On your return to Indianapolis, stop at the Warm Glow Candle Company at Exit 145. Stock up on the incredible scented candles and products that this candle company has to offer. Plan to spend 30 minutes shopping for treasures at this fun stop. Richmond is an hour’s drive from Indianapolis on I-70.

3. Fort Wayne

From an incredible children’s zoo to boutique shopping, you will find adventure in Fort Wayne, Indiana . It’s not uncommon to find the well-known Vera Bradley products in several boutiques and shops in Fort Wayne. I have several Vera Bradley travel bags and would highly recommend them to anyone that travels a lot. The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is a top-notch facility for folks of all ages. Don’t let the word Children’s Zoo stop you from visiting.

The attractions at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo are at a level that children can easily view the animals. This means that everyone can view the animals and have an enjoyable experience. If family history interests you, a visit to Fort Wayne is in order to dive into your family archives at the genealogy center. The genealogy center is wheelchair accessible and it’s easy to spend hours in this complex if you don’t pay attention to the clock. You can easily fill a full day with the zoo, shopping, and a visit to the Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library will complete your day.

South Bend, Indiana.

4. South Bend

South Bend, Indiana, is a college town, and it knows how to shine. Notre Dame University is in South Bend, and a visit to South Bend should include a tour of the campus. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is an incredible experience and worth going to see. Car buffs will love the Studebaker National Museum , as the Studebaker shines in this fantastic museum. The History Museum & Oliver Mansion still sticks out as one of the finest mansions that I have ever set foot in.

The historical museums in South Bend are top-notch, offering kids activities, artifacts, and a mansion to write home about, featuring 38 rooms. Not only was the history of the home showcased, but the history of agriculture was also present in the Oliver Mansion. A full day of exploring in South Bend also needs to include a visit to the South Bend Chocolate Company . South Bend is a 2-hour drive from Indianapolis.

Indiana Dunes National Park.

5. Indiana Dunes

Many people think they need to hop on a plane to experience a fabulous beach. Did you know that Indiana has an incredible beach in the northwest part of the state? Indiana Dunes National Park offers a beach, hiking, biking, and stunning views of Lake Michigan. The prairies and woodlands surrounding the area make it a beach opportunity unlike any other in the country. You can take a stroll on the beach with a pair of binoculars in hand for an incredible birding experience. Memorial Day to Labor Day is the busiest time of year. Spring and fall offer beautiful weather and fewer crowds and make it my favorite time of year to visit. A 2.5-hour drive from Indianapolis makes this an epic adventure for the day.

6. Morgan County

Morgan County sits approximately 45 minutes south of Indianapolis. The outdoor adventures in Morgan County are second to none. The small towns in Morgan County are proud to show visitors what they have to offer. Community pride shines here. Old Town Waverly Park offers historical buildings and a beautiful hiking trail that leads to stunning river views. Old Town Waverly Park is one of several parks in the area that is sure to keep you occupied. A fun surprise in Morgan County is all of the murals that you can find throughout the county. History comes to life in many areas of this town that is a short drive from the metropolis of Indianapolis.

Hamilton County in Indiana.

7. Hamilton County

Hamilton County, Indiana, is a short 30-minute drive from Indianapolis and offers some incredible experiences. The sculpture walk in Carmel is second to none. I always enjoy strolling through the town and looking at each of them. It always seems that each one has a story to tell. A visit to Hamilton County would not be complete without a visit to Conner Prairie. This complex is where you can learn how earlier residents lived in the area in the popular 1836 Prairie Town. On my visit to Conner Prairie, I saw the beautiful balloon that sits on the property. It was closed on the day that I visited, but it was clear that this was a highlight for many visitors.

K-Trails adventures at Strawtown Koteewi Park offers an opportunity for you to enjoy a horseback ride. Guided trail rides and sunset rides are popular trail rides for participants. If it’s been years since you have been on a horse, this is a fantastic trail to hop back on a horse. The trail travels through the wooded areas and offers some incredible views of the wide-open spaces. If you are like me, I appreciate a knowledgeable trail guide and a horse that does not wander off the trail. Horses do have minds of their own, making your trail guide the most important person on the ride.

Bloomington, Indiana.

8. Bloomington

Bloomington, Indiana, is home to Indiana University, making it a city that everyone knows about. University towns are always buzzing and busy with things going on. Bloomington is not any different. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a quiet place to visit, The Wylie House . This historic home is where Indiana University’s first president, Andrew Wylie, lived. On the day that I visited, several students from the university were painting individual wall hangings on the lawn. I quickly saw that this house was a home that was well respected within the town. A highlight of my visit was the Christmas cactus that was blooming in the middle of summer.

Kirkwood Avenue is the most recognizable street in Bloomington. The shops, restaurants, and shopping experiences are endless. You can see street art in several places throughout the town. The Sample Gates, built in 1987, serves as the gateway between Indiana University and the community of Bloomington. These gates are the most photographed place in Bloomington. Nature, incredible dining experiences, historical sites, and unique shopping make Bloomington a fun day trip from Indianapolis.

Each of these places offers something different to do in one day. You can choose to spend one day in these communities, or you may find that you are having so much fun that you need to stay overnight. All types of lodging are offered in each of these destinations, from hotels to motels, bed & breakfasts, and campgrounds. There’s something for everyone in each of these locations. Make your day a fun day, and hop in your car and find a fantastic day trip from Indianapolis.

The Best Road Trips from Detroit

Last Updated on April 30, 2024 by Kristin

best road trips from indiana

Known for institutions like the Motown Museum and Michigan Science Center, the midwestern city of Detroit, Michigan can keep visitors busy for days. And considering its legacy as an automobile manufacturing hub, it’s only fitting that Detroit is also the perfect place to start an adventure on the open road. Here are the best road trips from Detroit.

Fabulous Road Trips from Detroit

Cleveland, ohio.

170 miles / 2 hr. 42 mins.

One of the easiest road trips from Detroit is to swing around Lake Erie to visit Cleveland, a cosmopolitan yet charming lakeside city famous for its professional sports teams, great museums and local food scene. Start downtown with a visit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to browse music artifacts like stage outfits and liner notes, and browse more than 100 stalls of specialty food items at the West Side Market. Across town on the East Side lies the world-famous Cleveland Museum of Art, whose collection includes more than 45,000 pieces ranging from contemporary photography to medieval artifacts. Round out the day with a trip to the historic Little Italy neighborhood for pizza, gelato, or cannolis. Cleveland is also home to several hip neighborhoods full of galleries and eateries, including Ohio City, Tremont and the Detroit-Shoreway.

Traverse City, Michigan

256 miles / 4 hr. 3 mins.

Take a drive to the pinky on the Michigan “mitten” to historic Traverse City for a charming bayside getaway. The self-proclaimed cherry capital of the world has plenty of farm-to-fork cuisine, wineries and cool shopping. Many of the best places to stay are right on Traverse Bay, where you can also enjoy sandy beaches along with inn-style ambiance or resort fun. >> Recommended hotels in Traverse City

Chicago, Illinois

283 miles / 4 hr. 23 mins.

As the country’s third-largest city, Chicago offers an incredible amount of shopping, dining, nightlife, concerts and sporting events. Start downtown with a jawdropping view from the Willis Tower’s 103rd-floor Skydeck. Or stop by Millennium Park to snap a photo with the famous metallic “Bean” sculpture. When the weather is nice, take an architectural boat tour or explore Navy Pier. Or take the family to the Lincoln Park Zoo or catch a ballgame at Wrigley Field . End with a slice of deep-dish pizza or a classic Chicago-style hot dog. >> Recommended hotels in Chicago

Sleeping Bear Dunes, Michigan

272 miles / 4 hr. 20 mins.

For a unique experience you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the country, cross the state by heading northwest to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The area is known for its gigantic sand dunes overlooking Lake Michigan, which visitors can climb to enjoy spectacular views of the water. When you’re done, catch a sunset from one of the lookout points on the 7.4-mile Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. This loop features several stunning views of the lake and the dunes. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore park also offers campsites, hiking and kayaking.

Indianapolis, Indiana

287 miles  / 4 hr. 30 mins.

Whether you’re looking to take a family-friendly trip or spend a long weekend with friends, Indianapolis has plenty for everyone. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and Indianapolis Zoo are great for both kids and the young at heart. Art and history fans also have a wealth of museums to choose from, from the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art to the Indianapolis Museum of Art. For a night on the town, head to the downtown Massachusetts Avenue cultural district for an eclectic mix of restaurants, wine bars and nightlife venues. >> Recommended hotels in Indianapolis

Louisville, Kentucky

362 miles / 5 hrs. 42 min.

In the spring, it’s most famous as the hometown of the Kentucky Derby, but Louisville makes a delightful getaway year-round, too. Taste your way along Whiskey Row’s downtown distilleries. Explore the Muhammad Ali Center. Or dive into the other cool museums, such the giant 120-foot-tall Louisville Slugger museum and factory, with its giant bat replica outside. Given the rich history and culture the city right off the Ohio River, there is no shortage of things to do. >> Recommended hotels in Louisville
