What Our Clients Say

I was very fortunate to be on their 70th and 75th D-Day celebration tours. The service and attention to details was exceptional. It was very moving to go back.

As a Jane Austen enthusiast, this tour was perfect - and the Jane Austen Festival in Bath was just fabulous to see!

Words fail me...The Downton Abbey was a perfectly wonderful travel experience! We did not know we would be the ONLY guests at the Abbey. When we realised how truly exclusive our tour was we were speechless! Surreal being there and actually meeting Lady Carnarvon.

What is the difference between a twin and a double room?

A twin room has 2 separate beds and a double room has 1 large bed for 2 people to share.

As part of the tour will we be attending any special events?

On June 6 you will attend the commemoration ceremony at the American Cemetery in Normandy. Further details will be released closer to the date.

Where is the meeting place for the tour?

The meeting place will be at Charles de Gaulle airport, in Paris. Exact location will be communicated closer to the date. Meeting time will be 9:30am and the coach will depart at 10am.

What time will we return to Paris on the last day?

The arrival back into Paris is estimated to be at 6pm. This will be dependant on traffic conditions. The tour will finish at Gare du Nord train station.

Are children welcome on the tour?

Absolutely! We have both adults and children booked on this tour.

Suggested Itineraries

Please note that  the itineraries outlined here for a three day tour are suggestions only. We are always happy to create a custom itinerary for you or your group. Please let Malcolm know if there is anything you would like to see that isn’t included on the suggested itinerary.

Our three-day tour is an ideal tour for small parties of up to four people who want to really find out more detail about what happened in the early hours and days of Operation Overlord and what happened as the battle for Normandy progressed.

Although nearly 80 years have passed since D Day, and the Normandy countryside has changed with the times, walking the ground is still the best way to understand the battlefields and the strategies employed. You can see the terrain for yourself and judge the sight-lines,  the vantage points and the targets over which such fierce battles were fought. We will help to recreate the difficulties faced by the Allies in mounting the largest sea-borne invasion in history. Conversely we shall explain how for ten weeks, the German Army forced the Allies’ advance to a snail’s pace before they were finally driven back and defeated.

brecourt manor tour

Over the three days you will visit the significant sites of the D-Day battles. The major sites, like the Pegasus Bridge, St Mere Eglise, Omaha and Utah Beaches have excellent museums. Some sites still have the original concrete relics of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall which in some cases are well preserved. Others are now simply fields with a marker or memorial. At all of the sites your will visit will be supported by an explanatory talk to provide you with the background information to understand the action which took place.

More than just a tour

Whilst we pride ourselves on the bespoke nature of our tours, each one being tailor made to suit our guests, we would like to present a sample of the type of itinerary that’s possible on a three day tour. Please note that this itinerary is just a sample. We are always happy to modify tours or to build a particular tour from scratch if you want to concentrate on a specific aspect of the D Day landings or the battles that ensued.

We offer a choice of three day tours with either a British/Canadian or U.S. Emphasis

THE FULL DAY BAND OF BROTHERS TOUR 8.30am-5.30pm.

During my time guiding I have met more than 20 of the original men of Easy Company and have managed to ask many questions which have helped me piece together a better understanding of the men and their actions in Normandy.

Ste Mere Eglise. This small French market town is made famous by being considered to be the first town liberated on D-Day but also because of the scenes in the film the Longest Day. Most people visiting would not be aware that many of the young men from E/506th (Band of Brothers Company) also landed in and around the town. It is therefore the perfect place to start the tour from.

The Ambush Site. Lt Dick Winters and some of his men were involved in ambushing a group of German soldiers with horse drawn carts. We will visit where the ambush took place but what really happened is certainly different from the HBO mini series but is dramatic, interesting and larger in scale than many believe.

Lt Thomas Meehan’s C47 Crash Site. Visit the monuments that have been erected to commemorate and remember the men that died in this C47 plane crash that was to take the lives of 22 young American Servicemen, including 17 men of Easy Company. Hear the moving letters of their Company Commander to his wife and find out exactly what happened.

Ravenoville/Marmion Farm. We will visit the small village of Ravenoville, situated behind Utah beach. This area was to see many miss-dropped American Paratroopers including some of the Easy Company men. Moving a short distance to Marmion farm you will hear some fantastic stories of leadership, skill and bravery. Also see photos of the Paratroopers taken on the 6th and 7th of June with buildings that have changed little since D-Day.

Lunch. Lunch is normally stopping for a sandwich or other quick snack (not included in the price of the tour) and the group will relax for about half an hour.

Audoville La Hubert. Catching up with Lieutenant Dick Winters and his group, this is a great stop that will allow us to understand the battles for the causeways on D-Day. It is also a good location where we can discuss aspects depicted in the mini series including the possible killing of prisoners of war and the compassion men can often feel for their enemies.

Brecourt Manor. Visit the site where Easy Company assaulted the German gun battery position that overlooked and was firing directly onto Utah beach. Hear about the amazing leadership and bravery of Lt Dick Winters and his small group of men as they threw themselves into a well planned and executed attack that would be made world famous by the HBO mini series. (Please note whilst we can view the field that the men attacked, we no longer have access into it).

Ste Marie du Mont. This fantastic small town has hardly changed since the 6th of June 1944. Stand where the men of Easy Company did all those years ago. Hear their stories and see the photos which will bring the invasion back to life.

Coulloville. This, almost, unchanged cluster of farm buildings was to be Colonel Sinks Headquarters (CO, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment) on the 6th and 7th of June. Hear about the incredible story of Colonel Sinks actions on the morning of the 6th of June and Lt Dick Winters actions that night.

Dead Mans Corner/Purple Heart Lane/Carentan Causeway. The final approach to the town of Carentan. The Germans were going to do everything they could to hold the causeway. If taken by the Americans it would lead to the linking up of Utah and Omaha beach heads. See the funnelling route taken by 101st Airborne Division and hear about the advance that ended in the first American bayonet charge of the Invasion, that would lead to the award of a Medal of Honour.

At a small extra cost you may wish to visit the American Airborne Museum at Ste Mere Eglise.

Carentan.   This small, but significant crossroads town would need to be taken to ensure the link up between Omaha and Utah beach heads. It would be the first time the 101st Airborne Division would fight as a cohesive unit and Easy Company would certainly play their part. See the route of Easy Company’s attack and where they were pinned down by heavy fire. Then enter the town seeing the First Aid Post, crossroads and town squares.

Battle of Bloody Gulch. With the approach of the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division towards Carentan a decision is made to throw the 101st Airborne Division out into the infamous Normandy Hedgerows to hold at all costs. Hear about the desperate fighting through the accounts of the men that fought there.

Bringing History to Life

CEO

I was born and raised in Normandy, France, which undoubtedly influenced my fascination with this subject. I pursued this passion in my education at the University of Caen, where I studied English language, history and tourism. Both of my grandfathers were prisoners of war in Germany. The challenges they faced provided another foundation for my interest in the WWII era, which has always been a strong focus of mine. Having grown up in Normandy, I couldn't help but explore the stories of American heroes in WWII. My European background provides a special perspective, and I knew I could find a way to bring those experiences to life for others who share my respect for this subject. As a result, I worked at the Utah Beach Museum in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont for twenty years before we founded this company. In my last seven years at the museum, I had served as General Manager, and I quickly found my passion in this work: the joy of community and shared interest in historical tourism, which has been an incredible inspiration. That unique connection, and the chance to exchange stories of heroism and sacrifice through collective experiences, have been the driving force behind this new initiative. As of January 1, 2024, I devote all my time to Beaches of Normandy Tours and to preserving the legacy of the Greatest Generation.

My husband, who serves as the President of our new venture, shares this passion. He chased his interests abroad, expanding his horizons in higher education in the United States before coming to France to put his experience to work. He shares my excitement and motivation for connecting people with history and engaging with like-minded people who share a dedication to history and an appreciation for the heroism of men and women who came before us. We worked together at Utah Beach Museum for several years, where we realized we wanted to grow our work in this area and step into the field of historical tourism. Our success at the Utah Beach Museum, the joy of working together, and the realization that we made an excellent team in this field gave us the final push we needed to establish this company in 2021.

As the 2020 pandemic has changed the historical tourism landscape, we recognized the need for full-service tours that help Americans connect with their history around the world in a reliably secure and comfortable manner. I gathered a multinational group of my most passionate peers to create a heritage-driven project based on relevant experience and dedication to this goal, and thus began: Beaches of Normandy Tours. Our mission is bringing history to life and to celebrate the men and women who came before us, with the aid of local experts and historians.

"The tour exceeded my expectations” - this is what we hear from most of our Passengers after they completed one of our tours. To prove that we provide the best service on the historical tour market, we encourage you to read reviews from our customers. One can find written and video reviews on  our website , our  Google  and Facebook pages. Over the years, we have already achieved many of our objectives, the satisfaction of our Passengers being the most important among them.

Severine Diaz General Manager of Beaches of Normandy Tours

The untold story of Brecourt Manor & The Utah Beach Museum

The untold story of Brecourt Manor & The Utah Beach Museum

Watch this video featuring  Severine Diaz, the Founder of our company and former General Manager of Utah Beach Museum, produced by History Underground Channel in partnership with the Gettysburg Museum of History. You will learn about the story of the Vallavieille family who owned the famous Brécourt Manor on D-Day and still owns it. The founder of the Utah Beach Museum was Michel de Vallavieille. He was at Brécourt Manor with his family when soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division, led by Lieutenant Dick Winters, destroyed a German battery in the vicinity. According to this son, Charles de Vallavieille, he was probably mistaken for a German soldier and was shot by a trigger-happy paratrooper. In addition to the story of the family, the video will also introduce the Utah Beach Museum. Don’t forget to read our articles about the museum and other topics on our website in the newsletter archive.

Something about the series Band of Brothers struck a chord with television viewers all over the world. The story of a single company of paratroopers fighting across Europe turned many people into armchair historians.

People wanted to know more about Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. They bought Easy Company veterans’ memoirs and paintings depicting their actions. They traveled to Easy Company’s training grounds in Georgia and their battlefields in Europe. They also took a serious interest in what their own fathers and grandfathers did in the war.

Easy Company veterans became celebrities. They attended Hollywood galas, spoke at events, and received awards from a grateful nation. People chose their favorite unit member the way girls picked their favorite Beatle in the 1960s. Names like Compton, Lipton, Toy, “Shifty,” Guarnere, Heffron joined the American lexicon. Anything about Major Richard “Dick” Winters and leadership became must-read material for uniformed men and women and military historians.

While Stephen Ambrose’s 1992 Band of Brothers book received positive reviews, it was the miniseries that captured the public’s imagination. Dick Winters’ iconic words of motivation, “Hang tough,” took on an aura of seriousness that Jack Nicholson’s “You can’t handle the truth” could not approach.

WW-101st-4 HT:Sep03

I have been lucky to meet a few Easy Company veterans over the years and have seen the emotional reaction their presence evokes. I met Dick Winters in 1999 at a World War II event in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where he was a featured speaker. After his talk, he sat at a table and someone put a large map of Normandy in front of him. He traced his movements from Saint Mere Eglise to Brécourt Manor while a small crowd stood around him, completely engrossed. Suddenly, an old Dodge Dart drove up, and the woman behind the wheel honked the horn. Winters looked up, said, “I’ve gotta go!” and hurried off. You could feel the energy leave the area.

Bill Guarene once left me a profanity-laced message on my work phone. He was angry I did not pick up. I saved that message for more than a month, playing it for people who just wanted to hear his voice. I toured Normandy and Holland with Ed Mauser on a Band of Brothers tour. After dinner every night Mauser told me his story while I typed furiously on my computer. Almost the entire tour group of 40 people sat around us, recoding the interview on their cell phones.

Airborne veteran Lynn "Buck" Compton is shown in his catcher's gear while playing baseball for UCLA. Compton proved himself a fine athlete and later played minor league baseball.

I only met Buck Compton and Don Malarkey briefly, but I spoke with both on the phone to fact check my Brécourt Manor article in this issue. Finally, I met “Shifty” Powers and Earl “One Lung” McClung in a Paris hotel elevator. They were on their way to the bar … at 10 in the morning!

I hope you enjoy reading this Band of Brothers issue , and I hope in its pages you will learn something new about Easy Company, the 101st Airborne Division, and the war in Europe. Hang tough!
