Operated by Globus

It began more than 90 years ago, when a young man purchased a boat to transport visitors across Lake Lugano, Switzerland. Who would have thought that this single boat would launch one of the world's leading travel companies? Today, the Globus family of brands is a global company reaching every corner of the world, yet remains family-owned and steeped in the values Antonio Mantegazza had when he set out across Lake Lugano in 1928 - to enlighten travelers by showing them the very best of the destinations we know so well. At Globus, we create first-class escorted tours with just the right balance of included features & free time. We’re all about hidden gems, not hidden charges. We throw in more visits, toss in more experiences & include more sightseeing, all in the price of the vacation.

Scotland has a temperate maritime climate, characterized by mild and wet winters, and cool summers. The country's weather is highly changeable and can vary from region to region. The western coastal areas tend to be wetter and milder due to the influence of the Gulf Stream, while the eastern regions are drier and slightly cooler. Scotland experiences frequent rainfall throughout the year, with the western Highlands receiving the highest precipitation. Winter temperatures average around 0°C to 6°C (32 to 43 degrees Fahrenheit), while summer temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F).

The weather in Ireland is heavily influenced by its maritime location, resulting in mild, temperate conditions. The climate is characterized by frequent rainfall and changeable weather patterns throughout the year. Winters are generally mild, with average temperatures ranging from 4°C to 8°C (39°F to 46°F), while summer temperatures average between 14°C to 20°C (57°F to 68°F) in coastal areas. Rainfall is frequent throughout the year, with the western and northwestern coastal regions experiencing higher precipitation levels. The weather is often changeable, with a mix of sunny spells, rain showers, and cloud cover. The Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream influence Ireland's climate, helping to moderate temperatures.

On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits

Luggage : Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb

Carry-On Bag : *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”

  • *Please note : A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.

So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.

Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.

Packing Tips for Your Tour

Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:

Passport and Travel Documents : Ensure you have your passport , travel insurance , and any necessary travel documents.

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets and uneven terrain require comfortable footwear.
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
  • Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
  • Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
  • Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.

Sun Protection:

  • Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
  • Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly .

Medications and First Aid:

  • Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
  • Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.

Toiletries:

  • Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
  • Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
  • A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).

Electronics:

  • A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone . However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Chargers for each electronic you bring.
  • Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
  • Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
  • Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).

Miscellaneous:

  • A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet , and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
  • A small travel alarm.
  • A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
  • A travel pillow.
  • Scarf or shawl for visiting religious sites or to cover up in conservative areas.
  • Light sleepwear.
  • A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here !
  • Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).

Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.

Electricity

  • American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.
  • Type G outlets are used throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. Adapters are used to change the plug style from American-style plugs with two flat prongs to fit into these outlets, which take three rectangular prongs.
  • You will need a plug adapter and voltage converter to use your appliances in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
  • We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. Also, pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them.

Hair Dryers in Your Hotel

Hair dryers are standard accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.

Air Conditioning

  • Air conditioning is commonly available in European and United Kingdom hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.
  • However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings.
  • Most hotels in Europe or the UK can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.

Traveling by coach

Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.

The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.

Usually, most Optional Experiences will be priced in the local currency, but please read through the details of individual optional experiences for specific information. Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.

It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.

In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications .

Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.

It's essential to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to any destination. Routine vaccinations may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.

When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.

The trip cost does not include gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver. At the end of your trip, you may express appreciation to your Travel Director and Driver for their excellent service and the personal attention you received. Gratuities are given at the discretion of each guest, and a suggested amount per person/per day is listed in your travel documents.

For your convenience and ease, there is an option to pre-pay gratuities for the Travel Director and Driver at the time of booking.

Hotel services

It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

MEET THE CLASSY LASSIES, DERVILA STIVERS AND EMER COUGHLIN

When the Classy Lassies get together, it doesn’t take long before we reminisce about growing up in Ireland. Yes, we’re both born and bred Dubliners!

In between planning our clients’ trips—and always over a cup of tea—we swap memories of home on the Isle of Eire!

Memories like: Dervila’s family heading down to Connemara for a family vacation, a basket of sandwiches packed in the boot. After a few hours spent winding our way towards Galway, mam and dad would pull over and break out the picnic supplies right there on the side of the road—including a campfire kettle to make tea (known as the “volcano”). Yes, us Irish can’t go anywhere without our tea!

Or like: Emer and her siblings packed tight as sardines in the back of the car. But we would never complain—because we knew we were going to be rewarded with a lick of 99 ice cream (an Irish favorite)! We’d drive for what felt like hours to get to the beach, just for this ice cream. Our parents would get their own cone, and the kids had to share. We’d slowly roll our way back to Dublin, with sticky fingers and happy tummies!

For us, sharing these memories of our childhood in Ireland reminds us of why we started our travel business.

You see, at Celtic Hearts Travel, we design dream vacations the European way.

This means slowing down, enjoying the journey, and savoring what you’re experiencing in the moment—not thinking about what you’re going to be doing two hours from now!

Too often, tour companies have you on the go-go-go, hopping on and off tour buses, racing to get to the next bucket-list sight before the doors close.

Sure, you might see more sights that way … but will you really be able to take them in?

We don’t think so. This is why we design custom journeys for curious travelers who crave quality over quantity. Who want the insider take on what’s at the heart of the destination.

Travelers who want a vacation that’s actually relaxing.

If that’s you, then welcome! We’re so glad you’ve found us!!

And we can’t wait to design an amazing experience that’s perfectly tailored to your tastes, that takes you beyond the tourist traps, and that gets you exploring all the wonders of The World with ease.

While we’re busier these days in our adopted home of Atlanta, we still make time to return to Ireland every year.

On our trips back, we visit with our families, savor an afternoon cup of tea, and on occasion, take the long, winding drive to the coast just for a 99!

We love every simple, unhurried minute of it.

It’s the Classy Lassy way —and we’d love to show you how to live it on your next vacation,

25 most underrated cities in europe to visit in 2024.

In this article, we will list the 25 most underrated cities in Europe to visit in 2024. If you want to skip our discussion about tourism rebound, over-tourism, and the global tourism industry, go to the 10 Most Underrated Cities in Europe to Visit in 2024 .

Over-tourism is creating a problem for European locals in many tourist destinations . While Europe is on everyone's travel bucket list, most people opt for similar destinations. For instance, 80% of visits in France are concentrated in 20% of the country.

This imbalance has made lives difficult for many locals. Landlords in touristy places have started evicting their tenants for short-term rentals , creating a shortage of housing. The Guardian reports that Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABNB ), one of the largest short-term rental companies, has seen triple-digit growth in some European cities since 2014. As a result of this, some popular city destinations in Europe host 20 or more visitors for each local. Venice, Italy gets so many visitors that it has more tourist beds than the residents, as reported by Daily Mail .

The over-tourism dilemma is making traveling to touristy places increasingly costly. Authorities in such places are introducing visitor fees to discourage people from visiting and help with the upkeep. Venice, for example, has introduced an entrance fee for the entire city ranging from €3 to €10. Tourist tax rates in Paris have increased by almost three times recently. Spain has introduced fees to visit Plaza de España to ensure its safety and upkeep. So, it makes more sense now than ever to visit some of the most underrated cities in Europe .

Visiting cities   where few people go will also help those who are struggling with the impact of over-tourism. Ecologists in Action reported that nearly 800,000 people or 35% of the population of the Canary Islands are at risk of poverty or social exclusion because of rising housing and living expenses. Residents of the Canary Islands recently called for a hunger strike against over-tourism. Activists are also putting up false warning signs at beaches across Mallorca to deter English-speaking tourists. It is worth noting that the Canary Islands are located in Africa but they are a Spanish-autonomous community and are considered European from a political and socio-cultural point of view.

The tourism industry has seen massive growth in the last few decades. An astounding 1.9 billion people took foreign trips in 2019 compared to only 25 million in 1950. The global travel and tourism industry is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.1% for the forecast period of 2021 to 2026. At the end of this forecast period, it is expected to be worth $8.9 trillion. It also has a significant footprint in the world economy, as according to the World Tourism and Travel Council, it contributed to 7.6% of the global GDP.

While European countries serve as a hotspot for tourism, the United States is the country where international travelers spend the most.

American companies, as a result, are at the forefront of the tourism industry. Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB) is one of the largest short-term rental companies in the world. In 2022, hosts using the Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB) platform in the United States facilitated over 44 million guest arrivals in regions without hotels.

One of the key attractions for tourists across the world is Disney theme parks owned by The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS ). The company is an American multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerate with a significant economic footprint in several states across the United States. A recent study by Oxford estimated that the Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was the source of 263,000 direct and indirect jobs in Florida in 2022. It also generated $6.6 billion in tax revenue during the same year. Overall, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) had an economic impact of $40.3 billion in Florida in 2022.

Circling back to tourism in Europe, it is rebounding from the downturn during the pandemic. For the January to September period in 2023, international tourist arrivals in Europe were only 3.2% below 2019 levels. According to the European Travel Commission, the rebound is driven by intra-European travel and the influx of US tourists benefitting from favorable exchange rates. However, the European Travel Commission reports that the recovery remains uneven with 65% of reporting destinations still having pre-pandemic levels of foreign arrivals.

With that backdrop, let's look at the 25 most underrated cities in Europe to visit in 2024 .

Methodology

Since 'underrated' is a subjective concept, we relied on a consensus method of frequent travelers to curate our list of the 25 most underrated cities in Europe to visit in 2024 . We used a popular thread on Reddit to come up with these 25 cities. The thread asked people to mention the most underrated destinations in Europe . We noted down each city till we got 100 entries.

For each comment that we considered, we also noted the upvotes. If a comment mentioned more than one city, we awarded the number of upvotes to all the cities mentioned. For our list, we considered all the comments that were a direct reply to the thread.

Here is how we calculated our Insider monkey score: number of times the city appears on sampled responses + (total number of upvotes divided by 100). The higher this Insider Monkey Score, the higher the country ranks on our list. As a tiebreaker, we used our list of the countries with the most  beautiful nature in Europe   and gave preference to the city belonging to the country ranking higher on this list. For example, if city A and city B have the same Insider Monkey Score but the country of city B ranks higher than city A's country on our most beautiful nature in Europe's list, we ranked city B higher.

It is important to note that even with a tie-breaking system, some cities were tied, which is why we have 14 ranks in our list. If two destinations have the same rank, they are equally underrated regardless of their position on our list.

By the way, Insider Monkey is an investing website that tracks the movements of corporate insiders and hedge funds. By using a similar consensus approach we identify the best stock picks of more than 900 hedge funds investing in US stocks. The top 10 consensus stock picks of hedge funds outperformed the S&P 500 Index by more than 140 percentage points over the last 10 years ( see the details here ). Whether you are a beginner investor or a professional looking for the best stocks to buy you can benefit from the wisdom of hedge funds and corporate insiders

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
