Another preseason Clasico, Barcelona-Real Madrid, coming to U.S. this summer
In what has become a burgeoning, money-making tradition , FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will bring their renowned rivalry to the United States for a second consecutive summer.
They'll play El Clasico, as its known, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 29, as part of the second-year Soccer Champions Tour.
It will be a preseason match, of course. The tour — which will also feature Manchester United , Arsenal , Juventus and AC Milan — is not a tournament like some of its predecessors were. It is essentially eight one-off games, smack-dab in the middle of the Women's World Cup, billed by organizers as a "summer series" that will span California, Las Vegas, Texas and Florida.
But the headliner is the game of all games, perhaps the world's most celebrated sporting rivalry, at the grandiose stadium of all grandiose stadiums, Jerry World, the 105,000-seat home of the Dallas Cowboys that aspires to host the 2026 World Cup final .
El Clasico comes to the U.S.
When Barca and Madrid first brought their blood feud to the U.S. in 2017, the concept was ridiculed by some purists; but the exhibition game, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, was a roaring success. The Miami Clasico drew 1.7 million viewers on ESPN platforms and a sellout crowd willing to pay several hundreds of dollars apiece for tickets. Players competed, genuinely. A 3-2 Barcelona win thrilled everybody involved.
It felt, at the time, like a watershed moment for the International Champions Cup , the preseason event that grew to 18 teams and 27 games spread across nine countries late last decade. In early 2020, organizers were in negotiations to inaugurate Southern California’s SoFi Stadium with a second stateside Clasico that summer.
But then came COVID-19. The ICC canceled its 2020 programming, fizzled during the pandemic, and devolved into a legal dispute between its parent company, Relevent Sports, and its mastermind, the legendary soccer promoter Charlie Stillitano. The men's ICC has not been played since.
Relevent still runs a women’s ICC and other ventures. This summer, it is working with England 's Premier League and Spain 's La Liga on two separate North American tours. But in 2022, the Soccer Champions Tour swooped in for Barca and Madrid, and organized a Clasico at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. (Barca won, 1-0, in front of a boisterous, sellout crowd.)
In its second year, the Soccer Champions Tour has expanded to feature two clubs each from Spain, England and Italy . Sixth Street, a global investment firm that has partnered with both Barca and Real Madrid , is the company behind it. AEG is producing it. Legends is a key partner. And Stillitano, according to a source with knowledge of the tour's evolution, has been involved as a consultant.
Preseason tour schedules
The Soccer Champions Tour announced its full 2023 slate Friday:
Saturday, July 22: Barcelona vs. Juventus — Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California
Sunday, July 23: Real Madrid vs. AC Milan — Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California
Wednesday, July 26: Arsenal vs. Barcelona — SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California
Wednesday, July 26: Real Madrid vs. Manchester United — NRG Stadium, Houston
Thursday, July 27: Juventus vs. AC Milan — Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, California
Saturday, July 29: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid — AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas
Tuesday, August 1: AC Milan vs Barcelona — Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas
Wednesday, August 2: Juventus vs. Real Madrid — Camping World Stadium, Orlando
Kickoff times haven’t yet been determined. In their Friday news release, organizers said that “the matches remain subject to approval by the relevant football authorities,” but that is likely a formality.
Separately, Arsenal and Manchester United have organized a preseason friendly at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 22. United is also set to play Wrexham on July 25 in San Diego — presumably with a reserve team, because one day later, it is now scheduled to play Real Madrid in Houston. It then plays Borussia Dortmund on July 30 in Vegas .
Arsenal will also play the MLS All-Stars on July 19 in Washington, D.C.
The Premier League's own "summer series" will feature Chelsea , Newcastle, Aston Villa , Fulham , Brighton and Brentford, with games in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, New Jersey and Maryland.

Several of the biggest soccer teams in the world will take the pitch in the New York metropolitan area this summer.
MetLife Stadium and Yankee Stadium will play host to two of the six matches that will be part of the 2024 Soccer Champions Tour, The Post has learned, which takes place from July 27 to Aug. 6 and involves European heavyweights Real Madrid, AC Milan, FC Barcelona, Manchester City and Chelsea.
The two matches in the New York area pit Man City against AC Milan at Yankee Stadium on July 27 and Real Madrid against FC Barcelona at MetLife Stadium on Aug. 3.
“Soccer Champions Tour is thrilled to return this summer with enticing matchups featuring some of the world’s most storied clubs for fans in the U.S. to witness the beautiful game at the highest level,” Commissioner of Soccer Champions Tour Joe Carr said in a statement. “With all five clubs possessing passionate supporters that span the globe, we’re pleased to unveil an exciting range of matches throughout the U.S., a market experiencing exponential growth in the sport’s popularity.”
Matches will also take place in Orlando (Barcelona-Manchester City), Chicago (AC Milan-Real Madrid), Baltimore (Barcelona-AC Milan) and Charlotte (Real Madrid-Chelsea) as part of the Soccer Champions Tour.
New York has long been a summer stop for touring international clubs, but carries some extra significance as the metropolitan area gears up to host the World Cup final in 2026.
MetLife Stadium was selected by FIFA last month to host the coveted game, beating out AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, among other potential sites.
With the World Cup coming to North America in two short years’ time, the profile of the sport is growing, and friendlies featuring some of the biggest teams in soccer can only help generate more interest.
AC Milan boasts US men’s national team star Christian Pulisic on the roster.
Pulisic has been red-hot in his debut season with the Serie A club. He has 12 goals this season for AC Milan and has scored in four straight games recently.
It’s also fitting that AC Milan and Man City will make a stop at Yankee Stadium with both clubs having ties to the Yankees.
The Bronx Bombers own a minority stake in AC Milan and they partnered with City Football Group – owners of Man City – in establishing MLS’ New York City Football Club, which plays part of its home schedule at Yankee Stadium.
Manchester City faced Chelsea in The Bronx in 2013, days after MLS announced NYCFC would join the league as its 20th franchise.
Real Madrid, already boasting a lineup led by midfielder Jude Bellingham, is expected to add superstar forward Kylian Mbappé in a marquee move this summer.
The August match will be Real Madrid’s third time playing at MetLife Stadium and FC Barcelona’s second time playing at the home of the Jets and Giants.
Barcelona last played in the area in 2022, when the Spanish giants faced the New York Red Bulls in a friendly at Red Bull Arena.
Pre-sale tickets for all matches will be available on March 25, and general tickets go on sale March 27 via the Soccer Champions Tour website .

How Barcelona's rescheduled match helps Real Madrid in Champions League
Jude Bellingham's late goal caps off a 3-2 thriller between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. (2:08)
Despite everything that's going on with Barcelona at the moment -- still reeling from their loss in El Clasico at the weekend and their manager doing a U-turn over his decision to leave this summer, all amid their continued financial peril -- the last thing they would want is to be involved in anything that would boost the hopes of LaLiga rivals Real Madrid winning the Champions League this season, even inadvertently.
But that is what happened when their upcoming match against Valencia was moved by the Spanish league in a bid to help Los Blancos win a 15th European crown.
- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)
Barça were due to host Valencia on Saturday lunchtime but will instead welcome Los Che to the Olympic Stadium on Monday ( stream LIVE at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+ ) in a fixture change that was made after last week's Champions League quarterfinals.
It was one of six games from this round of fixtures in the Spanish top flight that have been switched to accommodate Madrid's desire to play on Friday, to maximise their preparation time for Tuesday's semifinal first leg away at Bayern Munich . Madrid's request was granted, with LaLiga moving their trip to Real Sociedad forward 24 hours, from Saturday to Friday ( stream LIVE at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+ ).
The knock-on effect was that the Spanish league decided that meant they had to move another five kick-off times: Barça vs. Valencia, Atlético Madrid vs. Athletic Club , Alavés vs. Celta Vigo , Almería vs. Getafe and Las Palmas vs. Girona .
Barça are very rarely given the Monday night slot in LaLiga due to their involvement in European competitions, but their elimination at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain last week enabled the league to push Valencia's visit back. As many Valencia fans had already arranged to be in Barcelona for the weekend, their club will provide bus travel for supporters as well as giving them the option to return their ticket. Around a hundred tickets were returned and put back on sale this week.
Bayern, meanwhile, will play Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday ( stream LIVE at 9:30 a.m. ET on ESPN+ ), giving Madrid slightly more time to get ready for the match at the Allianz Arena next week.
Elsewhere in Germany, Borussia Dortmund will also play on Saturday at RB Leipzig ( stream LIVE at 9:30 a.m. ET on ESPN+ ), before hosting PSG next Wednesday in the other semifinal.
PSG will also play on Saturday but they will have a free weekend ahead of the second leg, at the Parc des Princes on May 7, after receiving help from Ligue 1 . Their game against Nice has been rescheduled for May 15, giving them a full week to prepare for the return match against Dortmund.
Luis Enrique's side received the same treatment before their second leg against Barça, benefitting from a weekend off to turn around a 3-2 first-leg defeat and advance to the last four after a 4-1 win in Catalonia. Barça, meanwhile, had won the first leg after a nine-day break due to the Spanish top flight taking the weekend off before the quarterfinal first leg due to the Copa del Rey final being played.
So with Barça both benefitting from having more rest by winning the first leg, and then losing the second leg after PSG had enjoyed a longer break themselves, they will know very well just how valuable their fixture change could prove for Real Madrid's European hopes.

Having advanced past the Quarterfinal, Real Madrid will now face off against Bayern Munich in the Semifinal at 3:00 p.m. ET on April 30th at Allianz Arena. Real Madrid's last five Champions League games have been decided by no more than a goal, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Real Madrid is headed into the match without a loss and will look to keep things rolling. Neither they nor Manchester City could gain the upper hand last Wednesday so the two teams had to settle for a 1-1 draw. That draw made it three straight for Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich kept a clean sheet against Arsenal last Wednesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Arsenal 1-0. Bayern Munich's only goal came from Joshua Kimmich in minute 63.
With that draw, Real Madrid's record moves to 7-3-0. As for Bayern Munich, their win bumped their record up to 7-2-1.
Now down to some of the best teams in soccer, wins will be even harder to come by. Check CBS Sports after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other Champions League content.
Bayern Munich is a slight favorite against Real Madrid, according to the latest Champions League odds, being +139 to win.
The over/under is 2.5 goals.

Ter Stegen, foreign player with second most appearances in an FC Barcelona shirt
Marc-André ter Stegen continues to set new milestones at FC Barcelona. Following his appearance in the game against Valencia, the goalkeeper is now second on the all time list of foreign players with most appearances at FC Barcelona, equalling the total of Dani Alves with 408 games.
Now, the only player ahead of the German goalkeeper is none other than Leo Messi with 778 appearances. In fourth place comes Javier Mascherano with 338 games and then in fifth Ivan Rakitic with 310.
Furthermore, Ter Stegen is just two games away from matching the total number of appearances of Andoni Zubizarreta who is the goalkeeper with second most appearances for FC Barcelona behind leader Victor Valdés who made 535 appearances. It was Zubizarreta in his role as sporting director who signed Ter Stegen from Borussia Mönchengladbach back in 2014.
Ter Stegen made his debut for the blaugranes in a Champions League group stage game against Apoel Nicosia back in September 2014.
Battling for the Zamora Trophy
The Barça goalkeeper is still very much in the hunt for the Zamora Trophy this season, retaining the award which he won last season. Ter Stegen has conceded 22 goals in 23 matches in the league this season with a coefficient of 0.96, behind leader Unai Simón of Athletic Club who has conceded 31 goals in 32 matches, a coefficient of 0.97.
