Summertime means family vacation time! Here are some trip ideas to check off your bucket list. With both Church history sites and other fun things to see and do, you can be sure to plan a trip your whole family will love.

Discovering Church History in the Midwest

Road trip, anyone? If you’re planning to visit the Midwest, be sure to plan in some time to drive to these awesome places. The experience is definitely worth the trip!

Nauvoo , which translates to “the City Beautiful” in Hebrew, was established by the Saints when they fled from Missouri during the winter of 1838-1839. Though the land was originally quite swampy, approximately 16,000 Saints called it home until they fled again in 1846 because of religious persecution.

Today, a beautiful visitor’s center is located in the heart of town to provide maps and other resources for your visit. Many of the buildings, including Brigham Young’s home, the Nauvoo Printing Office, and the Webb Brothers’ Blacksmith Shop, are open to visitors and have short presentations or activities provided. Kids will love learning how candles and ropes were made and enjoy trying the gingerbread cookies at the Scovil Bakery. Visiting Carthage Jail, located a few miles outside of town, is also a great way to learn about and pay tribute to the Prophet Joseph Smith, who was martyred there in June of 1844. The Nauvoo Illinois Temple , rededicated in 2002, stands as a reminder of the faith and sacrifice of the early members of the Church.

If you’ll be in town during the summer months, don’t miss the opportunity to see the free summer shows . From short vignettes with music performed out on the street, to variety shows performed on the banks of the Mississippi as the sun sets, these performances celebrate Nauvoo’s history in a way that makes it seem even more real. There’s also the British and Nauvoo Pageants , which enact the history of the settlement of Nauvoo and the sacrifices that members of the Church made as they emigrated from across the ocean. Young performing missionaries also sing in Sunday concerts at the visitor’s center, as well as perform plays with song and dance that are entertaining and touching for people of all ages.

Although Nauvoo’s population rivaled that of Chicago’s in the 1800s, Chicago stands today as one of the largest cities in the United States. Chicago has all the energy of an international city with the pleasantries of a Midwestern town and is about a four and a half hour drive from Nauvoo.

Though it’s not common knowledge, Chicago has some connections to Church history too. In 1842, Joseph Smith wrote to John Wentworth, editor and proprietor of the Chicago Democrat, in response to a query about the Church. Known as “The Wentworth Letter,” the information Joseph wrote outlined the fundamental doctrines of the gospel. The letter was never actually published in the newspaper, yet still holds significance to members of the Church today—we now know it as the Thirteen Articles of Faith.

Known for its architecture, the Chicago skyline is worth the view from several different perspectives. A trip to the top of Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower) is sure to bring some excitement. Architectural boat cruises along the Chicago River are also a delightful way to see the city. Navy Pier, located on the waterfront of Lake Michigan, has fun for the whole family, including the Chicago Children’s Museum and the world-renowned Ferris wheel. In addition to several large parks and outdoor theaters, Chicago also has an incredible Museum Campus, complete with Adler Planetarium, the Field Museum, and Shedd’s Aquarium. Be sure to plan some time to try deep dish pizza and some Garret’s Popcorn! You can also see the brand new six-story church building on the corner of Clark and Chestnut Street, dedicated fall of 2017, and the Chicago Illinois Temple , located about 20 miles north of the city.

Independence.

Jackson County, Missouri was inhabited by the early Saints from 1831 to 1839, where they experienced great trials and turmoil because of persecution. The area is also significant to members of the Church because of the prophesies associated with this land that are yet to be fulfilled, including the building of the New Jerusalem and the dedication of several different temples. Independence is about a four and a half hour drive from Nauvoo, and the four main historic sites , including the Independence Visitor’s Center, Liberty Jail, Adam-ondi-ahman, and the Farr West Temple Site, are all within 90 miles of each other.

Adam-ondi-ahman was settled by the Saints for a short period of time in 1838. Originally called Spring Hill, Joseph Smith renamed the area to “Adam-ondi-ahman” after receiving revelation from the Lord (see D&C 116). Elder Bruce R. McConkie stated that this name means "the place or land of God where Adam dwelt." To get the most out of your visit to this sacred place, listen to Randall C. Bird’s audio book, Discovering Adam-ondi-ahman , as you drive.

Nearby is Liberty Jail , where Joseph Smith and five other men were held captive for five months during the winter of 1838-1839. The living conditions in Liberty Jail were brutal, and the prisoners suffered from illness, starvation, and bitter cold temperatures. Though this was perhaps the lowest time of Joseph’s life, it was also a time of sacred revelation. It was in Liberty Jail that the Lord revealed many sections of what we now read in the Doctrine and Covenants, including D&C 121-123. Visiting the Liberty Jail Historic Site is a wonderful opportunity to feel close to the Spirit of sacrifice and faith that Joseph and other faithful Saints demonstrated during this time. Sister missionaries guide tours about every thirty minutes, allowing visitors to see the actual place where Joseph and his companions were imprisoned.

Celebrating Beginnings in the Eastern States

Whether it’s learning to appreciate the creation of the Earth, the building of our nation, or the blessings of the restoration, seeing these monumental places in New York and Pennsylvania is sure to bring a great sense of gratitude and a whole lot of fun!

Visiting Palmyra is an incredible opportunity to experience the power of the restoration of the gospel. While the original Smith home is no longer standing, archaeologists recovered its location along with over 2,000 artifacts that date back to the time that the Smiths were living there. Today, tours of the Smith Farm guided by missionaries allow an inside look of an authentic replica of the building, along with a replica of the cooper shop where Joseph Smith hid the golden plates to protect them from mobs and others intending harm. Other sites close by include the Peter Whitmer Farm, the Book of Mormon Publication Site, and the Martin Harris Farm.

A short walk away from the Smith Farm is the Sacred Grove, which consists of 10 acres of protected forestland. Few locations in the world can compare to the significance of this place; it was here in 1820 that 14-year-old Joseph experienced the First Vision. Overlooking the Sacred Grove is the Palmyra New York Temple , which was dedicated in 2000. Of this temple, President Gordon B. Hinckley said , “I regard this temple as perhaps the most significant, in one respect, in the entire Church. It was right here in the Sacred Grove where it all began.”

The Hill Cumorah is also an essential place to visit. This location marks the spot where the angel Moroni led Joseph Smith to find the golden plates Moroni buried, which would later be translated as the Book of Mormon. The Hill Cumorah Pageant , which runs in July each year, features a cast of over 600 people in an unforgettable outdoor presentation of the story of the Book of Mormon.

Niagara falls.

One of nature’s most thrilling wonders, Niagara Falls is just short of a two-hour drive from Palmyra and is sure to bring a renewed sense of awe for God’s creations. On the border between New York and Canada, the Falls has cliffs that span almost 300 feet across and a gorge that drops 200 feet. On average, 6 million cubic feet of water plunge over the edge every sixty seconds.

The Niagara Falls State Park on the New York side provides the opportunity to see the Falls without needing a passport. Additionally, the park provides a discovery center, hiking trails, and other tour packages to enhance your experience. Visiting the Hurricane Deck also allows a closer view of the Falls. Just remember to bring a rain poncho—you’re sure to get wet!

Though not as well-known as Nauvoo and Palmyra, Harmony, Pennsylvania is an important church history site that is definitely worth the trip. (If you are driving from Palmyra, it will take a little over four hours). Dedicated by President Russell M. Nelson in 2015, the Priesthood Restoration site provides great insight into the early days of the Restoration. Here you can see the farm along the Susquehanna River where Emma Hale Smith grew up, in addition to visiting the place where the Aaronic Priesthood was restored to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery.

After hearing of the golden plates and the miracles Joseph had experienced, Oliver Cowdery followed a prompting to travel across the state of New York to meet Joseph in Harmony. This was an answer to Joseph’s prayers, and Oliver began helping Joseph in the translation process of the Book of Mormon almost immediately. When Oliver and Joseph reached 3 Nephi, they were touched by the Spirit and had a strong desire to be baptized. They did not, however, know how the Lord wanted them to go about baptizing. The two retreated to a quiet grove just beyond the farm and prayed out loud to seek the Lord’s direction. In answer to their prayer, John the Baptist appeared and conferred the Aaronic Priesthood upon them by the laying on of hands. That same day, both Joseph and Oliver were baptized in the Susquehanna River. These were the first of thousands to enter the waters of baptism in the latter days.

Today, a visitor’s center with guided missionary tours and a short film can help you experience the Priesthood Restoration Site to the fullest. The dedicated grounds also include a quiet trail that leads from the visitor’s center to a shaded grove of Maples near the spot where Joseph and Oliver prayed.

Philadelphia

Celebrate the history of the American Revolution and the birth of our nation by visiting Philadelphia , located about five hours away from Palmyra and Harmony. In the heart of the city is Independence Hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed. In a sense, this too is a sacred place, for it was here that many of the freedoms we have today were penned. While entrance to Independence Hall is admitted by tour only, tickets for tours are free, with the exception of a small handling fee if tickets are reserved in advance.

Another opportunity to experience the spirit of the American Revolution can be found at the Betsy Ross House . It was Betsy Ross who, in 1776, stitched the first stars and stripes of the American flag. Located in Philadelphia’s historic district, the Betsy Ross House is a great mix of history and fun. Guided audio tours designed for both children and adults are available as you make your way through the house. Kids will also love meeting Betsy Ross herself in her upholstery room, where they can ask questions and learn more in an engaging, interactive experience.

The Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple is also conveniently located right downtown. Dedicated by President Henry B. Eyring in 2016, the temple and its beautiful neoclassical architecture are absolutely stunning.

Of course, a trip to Philadelphia would not be complete without trying some Philly cheesesteak! Other fun vacation ideas include exploring the riverfront to see Boathouse Row, touring the museums on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and snapping some photos in front of Robert Indiana’s famous “LOVE” statue.

Diving into nature, culture, and history in hawaii.

Taking a trip to Hawaii is a great way to experience history and culture combined with tropical bliss. With these places on your list, it’s sure to be a dream vacation never to be forgotten.

Polynesian Cultural Center

In order to experience what island culture is really like, visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center is a must. Located on the North Shore of Oahu, the PCC allows you to get away from the crowds and commercialism of the city and immerse yourself in the lifestyles of eight different cultures.

The PCC is not only an incredible tourist attraction; it is also a fulfillment of prophetic prophesy. In 1955, when President David O. McKay offered the dedicatory prayer for the Church College of Hawaii (now known as BYU-Hawaii), he prayed that “this college, and the temple, and the town of Laie may become a missionary factor, influencing not thousands, not tens of thousands, but millions of people who will come seeking to know what this town and its significance are." In 1962, he authorized construction of the PCC, which has now been open for over 50 years.

What makes the PCC stand out above anything else you’ve experienced is its incredible authenticity. Its 42 acres consist of eight villages representing Samoa, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, Marquesas, Tonga, Tahiti, and Rapa Nui (also known as Easter Island). Many of the guides and performers are actually from the islands they represent. Highlights of the PCC include cultural presentations at each village, luaus with authentic food and entertainment, and a night show with fire, music, and dance.

Located nearby is the Laie Hawaii Temple , which is the fifth operating temple dedicated in this dispensation. While on the North shore, keep in mind that beaches in this area are often more quiet than the ones in Honolulu, so that is another thing to consider as your family plans beach and relaxation time.

Pearl Harbor

Honor those who heroically lost their lives in World War II by visiting Pearl Harbor , located just outside the city of Honolulu. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed the US Naval Base in a surprise attack, killing over 2,400 Americans and injuring 1,000 more. It was this tragic bombing that sent the United States into active involvement in World War II.

The USS Arizona was bombed within the first seven minutes of the attack. Today, it is commemorated beautifully with a white memorial that floats above its sunken remains.  Visitors can walk out onto the memorial deck to see the sunken ship sitting at the bottom of the harbor. While very different from Church history sites, a very reverent and sacred feeling abides here.

Additionally, visitors can tour the USS Missouri, a WWII fleet ship that has been refinished and secured in Pearl Harbor for historical purposes. Guided audio tours provide visitors of all ages to explore the ship from top to bottom. You can even walk the deck where General MacArthur received the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945.

Hawaii's State and National Parks

A trip to Hawaii would not be complete without fully taking in the tropical beauty of the islands. With volcano hikes, breathtaking sunsets, and beautiful beaches, Hawaii’s national and state parks have so much to offer.

Haleakala National Park in Maui provides the perfect opportunity to explore and hike around. This park is home to the Haleakala Crater, an inactive volcano that can be seen from almost anywhere on the island of Maui. Guided hikes or horseback tours with nature experts can be arranged to provide more insight and information as you explore. Additionally, campgrounds and cabins are available, which can be a refuge from the tourist-heavy resorts. A nearby visitor’s center also has a lookout point perfect for watching the sunrise. 

The Diamond State Monument in Oahu is a great family friendly hike. Though the trail is steep, it is less than a mile to the summit and has stairs with railings at the steepest part. While it is often crowded, the view at the top is beautiful, with several different lookout points perfect for gazing across the island and taking pictures.

Finally, if snorkeling is on your bucket list, Hanauma Bay State Park is a must! Located on the main island, Hanauma Bay was formed within a volcanic cone and is home to thousands of fish and other reef wildlife. Officially named a marine life conservation area in 1967, Hanauma Bay now has a marine education center that provides visitors the opportunity to learn about the conservation of these beautiful fish and their natural habitat. The park offers snorkeling gear for both experienced snorkelers and first-timers. After seeing these colorful fish firsthand, it’s easy to see why Hanauma Bay was voted as Hawaii’s best beach in 2016.

Below is a general itinerary for our Ultimate Church History Tours.  Please select one of our tours above for exact details pertaining to each trip.

Fly to Rochester, NY and receive a transfer to our hotel.  We will hold a short fireside this evening and discuss our upcoming trip itinerary.

We will spend a full day seeing the sites in Palmyra. Our stops will include the Sacred Grove, the Smith Family Farm, the rebuilt log home where the Moroni visits took place, the Hill Cumorah, the Grandin Press (where the Book of Mormon was first published), the Martin Harris Farm, the Palmyra Cemetery.  There will be time to attend the Palmyra Temple.

Today will we travel to Fayette, NY and see the Peter Whitmer Farm. This is where the Church was officially organized. We will then travel to Harmony, PA and to the Susquehanna River where the Priesthood was restored  The new Priesthood Restoration Site is amazing.

We will make our way towards Kirtland, OH today while making a stop at the John Johnson Farm.  Here Section 76, and other revelations were received.  The Father and Son appeared here and many other sacred events took place in this farmhouse.

We will spend the day in Kirtland, Ohio today. We will visit the Kirtland Temple, the Kirtland Visitors’ Center, the Newell K. Whitney home where Joseph and Emma lived, the Newell K. Whitney store which included the School of the Prophets and where many revelations (including the Word of Wisdom) were received, the John Johnson Inn where the Church periodical The Evening and Morning Star was published, the reconstructed Kirtland Schoolhouse, the Kirtland Ashery and a reconstructed water-powered sawmill, the exterior of Joseph Smith’s home, the Morley Farm, and the Chaplin Forest Stone Quarry where much of the stone for the Kirtland Temple was obtained.

This morning, we will be transferred to the Cleveland, Ohio airport for our flights to the Kansas City, Missouri airport where we will be met with ground transportation to our hotel.  For those interested, we will attend the Kansas City Temple tonight.

Today we will start the Missouri portion of our LDS Church History Tour.  It will be a full day of sightseeing. We will visit Independence, Liberty Jail, Far West, and Adam-ondi-Ahman.

Our first full day in Nauvoo which will include the Nauvoo Temple, the Visitor’s Center, the Relief Society Statue Gardens, the Seventies Hall, the Old Pioneer Cemetery, Brigham Young’s home, Wilford Woodruff’s home, Heber C. Kimball’s home and many other homes. We will also see the Red Brick Store, and the Mansion House and many, many other historical sites.

We will start the day by visiting the sites we missed yesterday.  We will then walk the Trail of Hope where the pioneers started their Westward trek to the Salt Lake Valley.  You may choose to attend the Nauvoo temple today as well.  We will also attend the production of “Rendezvous in Old Nauvoo” tonight.

Today we will visit the Carthage Jail.  We will have free time to revisit the sites in Nauvoo, shop, or just relax on the Temple grounds.  We will travel to St. Louis, Missouri later tonight.

The hotel will transfer you to the airport for your flight.

Sites are relived in historical order so complex history is easily followed.  In the spirit of a fine gospel doctrine class, inspiring history is taught right where it happened!  Each day begins with a hymn and a prayer on the bus and ends in the same, inspiring way.

Goose-bumpy, spiritual participation opportunities are offered to tour members.

Some are given scriptures to read at sacred sites, prophesying glorious future events.  Some represent historical figures such as Emma Smith, Oliver Cowdery, Martin Harris, Mary Fielding, and others, by presenting rehearsed scripts recounting their struggles, hopes, sorrows, faith, courage and blessings we have received as a result.  Some tour members read inspiring historical accounts as we visit the sites where they occurred. Others bless or serve food, conduct hymns, or assist those who need help with their luggage. And some simply prefer to "observe." These tours can be and have been life changing and priority changing for many tour members. We know of at least 70 couples (we lost count!) who decided to serve missions at places such as Independence, Adam-ondi-Ahman, Nauvoo, Palmyra, Kirtland after participating in one of these tours.  Pending divorces have been called off, young people have experienced a change of heart and returned home to submit mission applications.  One senior couple, who met on one of these tours, married in the temple a few months later.  Another single adult two-some met on a tour and were married in the Salt Lake Temple. 

A tour priority is effective use of time so that you get to do more of what you came for and in less time without being rushed.

For example, all meals are included in the tour price so that they can be pre-arranged, and ready when we arrive!  Over the course of a tour, this saves hours over your having to decide where to eat, get waited on, food prepared & served, eat and then pay the bill.  Most tour members praise the food.  In fact, they praise the whole tour!  Some do the same tour a second time and take along loved ones so they can have the same experience.  Many have written letters of appreciation.  And the good word is spreading abroad, too!  Church members have flown all the way from England, Scotland, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India just to have the unforgettable, inspiring experience of a Mormon Heritage Tour!

DAY 1 -  SALT LAKE * BUFFALO * PALMYRA                     

The fun begins with your flight from Salt Lake City to Buffalo New York. An early morning flight allows you to get the most out of the day! After arrival we travel by motorcoach to Palmyra and the Hill Cumorah and Visitor’s Center. This serves as an outstanding starting point for your Church History tour and your stay in Palmyra. You’ll also have your first look at the Palmyra Temple. Enjoy four nights at the Victor Hampton Inn & Suites, located in beautiful upstate New York and right by the Victor City Mall.  Enjoy a group welcome dinner tonight.  (D)

DAY 2 -   PALMYRA     {TEMPLE SESSION OPTION}

This morning we visit the Joseph Smith Snr. Farm and Log Cabin where Joseph lived as a boy and was visited by the Angel Moroni. You will be touched by the spirit as you walk through the Sacred Grove and contemplate the event that took place here in the spring of 1820. A picnic lunch is included today before we go to the sites of the Martin Harris Farm, Alvin Smith’s Grave and the Erie Canal Locks. Later this afternoon we have the marvelous experience of entering the Palmyra Temple to participate in a pre-reserved session. Then relax and enjoy this evening.         (B,L)

DAY 3 -    PALMYRA     

This morning after breakfast we make an early morning visit to the top of the Hill Cumorah ,with views of the Pageant setting and an up-close look at the Angel Moroni Statue created by Torleif S. Knaphus who was commissioned to create many statues and bias-reliefs for the Church. We then go to the Grandin Printing Shop , where the Book of Mormon was first published. Then a lunch break and stroll the old main street of Palmyra. This evening, events in the Book of Mormon will come alive as watch the pre-recorded 2019 - HILL CUMORAH PAGEANT , “America’s Witness for Christ.”   (B)

DAY 4 -    SUSQUEHANNA - HARMONY * FAYETTE * PALMYRA  

We travel to Harmony this morning and visit the Priesthood restoration site on the banks of the Susquehanna River . Also see Joseph & Emma’s first home and the Priesthood restoration statues and monuments . After lunch we arrive at Fayette , New York. It was here, in the Peter Whitmer home on April 6, 1830 that the Church was organized. After our tour of the Whitmer home we continue on to Palmyra with a stop at the Waterloo Mall for dinner on your own.  (B,L)

DAY 5 -    NIAGARA FALLS * KIRTLAND, OHIO        

After breakfast we depart for Niagara Falls . We’ll take the thrilling “Maid of the Mist” boat ride on the Niagara River right up to the base of the Falls, an experience not to be missed! You’ll also have time to view the Falls from the Skywalk with awesome views of the falls, the Canadian side and surrounding area. Spend time in the Visitors Center, grounds and museum before we leave Niagara and travel to Kirtland . After dinner we visit the Isaac Morley Farm and get a great view of the Kirtland Temple at night.  (B,D)

DAY 6 -   KIRTLAND * AMISH

Today our tour begins in restored and dedicated Kirtland . We start at the Visitors Center and then see the Newell K. Whitney Home and Store the John Johnson Inn, the School House, the Saw Mill and Ashery . After lunch we travel to Hiram, Ohio and visit the John Johnson Farm . It is here Joseph and his family lived for several months and had many marvelous spiritual manifestations. It was in the front yard that Joseph and Sidney Rigdon were dragged, beaten and tarred and feathered during the night of March 24, 1832. Leaving the farm we bus to Middlefield for a home-cooked mid-day meal in the home of a delightful Amish family. There will be a stop along the way to shop at an Amish gift shop for Jams, quilts, candies, leather goods, wood- working, needlepoint and lacework.    (B,L)

DAY 7 -     KIRTLAND * SALT LAKE CITY

We attend Sacrament meeting this morning at one of the Kirtland wards. Then we spend time at the historic Kirtland Temple and Visitors Center . We’ll also visit the Historic Kirtland Cemetery and Temple Stone Quarry before returning to our hotel for check out and departure. On the way to the airport we stop for a delicious Sunday lunch at the Cracker Barrel restaurant . You will return home this evening with an increased appreciation for your country and for the gospel and its restoration.   (B,L)

What to Expect When You Visit the Church’s Historic Sites in New York and Pennsylvania

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers tours at five historic sites in New York and Pennsylvania. These sites bear witness of the beginning of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ through the Prophet Joseph Smith. As you experience the sites, you can learn about Joseph Smith’s First Vision, the translation and publication of the Book of Mormon, the restoration of priesthood authority and power, and the establishment of the restored Church of Jesus Christ on the earth.

The Church’s five sites in this region are within about 140 miles (225 km) of each other. Three of the sites—the Smith Family Farm and Sacred Grove, the Hill Cumorah, and the Book of Mormon Historic Publication Site—are within a few minutes of each other. The sites are open all year, but they sometimes close because of inclement weather. Links to addresses, phone numbers, and schedules are included below.

Use this table to plan your drive between sites.

The majority of the places at these sites are accessible for visitors who use wheelchairs or who walk with difficulty. However, the outdoor paths are not paved, and two of the historic homes offer tours of the upper floors but do not have elevators. Missionaries at these places will adapt their presentations to accommodate the needs of all visitors. All the sites include benches, drinking fountains, and public restrooms.

Trained service animals are allowed at the Church’s historic sites in New York and Pennsylvania, including inside historic buildings. However, emotional support, therapy, comfort, or companion animals and pets are not allowed. Please refer to the Church’s  Service Animal Guidelines  for more information.

Remember that these are sacred places. Please stay on the trails, and be respectful of other visitors and local residents. Do not disturb trees, plants, headstones, monuments, artifacts, or any other element of the landscapes and exhibits.

Core Experience

1. smith family farm and sacred grove.

The Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ began at the Smith Family Farm. The farm includes the Sacred Grove, where Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ visited Joseph Smith. It also includes a reconstructed log home at the place where the angel Moroni first visited Joseph and the home where the family of Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith later lived for a time. A welcome center provides an overview of the sacred events that occurred at the farm.

Tours begin at the welcome center. Missionaries will guide your tour of the two homes. Your tour of the Sacred Grove will be self-guided.

If you choose to experience all that the site offers, plan to spend between 1 and 2 hours there.

2. Hill Cumorah

On the Hill Cumorah, Joseph Smith was tutored by the angel Moroni and obtained an ancient record containing the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. From that record, he translated the Book of Mormon by the power of God. Today the site includes a visitors’ center at the bottom of the hill, the Angel Moroni Monument at the top of the hill, and a network of trails.

The visitors’ center offers a self-guided tour including interactive exhibits and artwork that tell the story of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Missionaries will be available to answer your questions.

Multiple self-guided trails lead to the Angel Moroni Monument at the top of the Hill Cumorah. Some pass through the old-growth forest. Select trails are paved and are accessible for visitors who use wheelchairs or who walk with difficulty. Visitors who are unable to walk to the top of the Hill Cumorah can request a shuttle from the missionaries in the visitors’ center.

If you choose to experience all that the Hill Cumorah and the visitors’ center offer, plan to spend between 1 and 2 hours there.

3. Grandin Building: Book of Mormon Publication Site

At E. B. Grandin’s print shop, now known as the Book of Mormon Historic Publication Site, the Book of Mormon was printed, bound, and first made available to the public. The site includes a restored print shop and exhibits.

Missionaries will guide you on an interactive tour of the print shop, including hands-on activities that help you learn about printing and binding books. At the end of the tour, you will be free to explore interactive exhibits, artwork, and artifacts that tell the story of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon.

Distribution Services

If you’re looking for a souvenir of your visit to the sites where the Restoration began, there is now a gift shop and distribution store next door to the Grandin Building. Here you will find a variety of keepsakes that will help you remember your visit to these sacred places. The gift shop is open at the following times:

Tuesday – Friday: 10 AM – 5 PM

Saturday: 10 AM – 3 PM

4. Peter and Mary Whitmer Farm

In the home of Peter and Mary Whitmer, Joseph Smith finished translating the Book of Mormon and organized the Church of Jesus Christ. Today a visitors’ center and a representation of the log home occupy the site.

Tours begin at the visitors’ center. Interactive exhibits, artwork, and an 18-minute film tell the story of the Whitmer family and the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The exhibits at the visitors’ center are self-guided.

Missionaries oversee the showing of the film and guide the tour of the reconstructed homes. Tours of the visitors’ center, the priesthood restoration area, the Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Monument, the McCune Cemetery, and the baptismal site are self-guided. 5. Priesthood Restoration Site

The Priesthood Restoration Site includes historic landscapes where the Aaronic Priesthood was restored and where the first baptisms of the Restoration were performed. It also includes reconstructions of two historic homes: the Isaac and Elizabeth Hale home, where Emma Hale Smith grew up, and the Joseph and Emma Smith home, where Joseph translated most of the Book of Mormon. A visitors’ center provides an overview of the sacred events that occurred in this place. The McCune Cemetery, not part of the official site, is a short walk from the Joseph and Emma Smith home. It contains the graves of Joseph and Emma’s firstborn child and Emma’s parents.

Tours begin at the visitors’ center. A 25-minute film, artwork, artifacts, and interactive exhibits teach about the translation of the Book of Mormon, the early revelations of Joseph Smith, and the restoration of the priesthood.

Missionaries oversee the showing of the film and guide the tour of the reconstructed homes. Tours of the visitors’ center, the priesthood restoration area, the Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Monument, the McCune Cemetery, and the baptismal site are self-guided. Other Places to Visit in Palmyra

1. palmyra new york temple.

The Palmyra New York Temple is just a few minutes away from the Sacred Grove. It is open to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who hold current temple recommends. For information about attending this temple, click or tap  here .

2. Alvin Smith’s Gravesite

Alvin Smith, the oldest son of Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith, died in November 1823, years before he could be baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. About 12 years later, the Prophet Joseph Smith received a revelation that his brother Alvin would be an heir of the celestial kingdom (see D&C 137). Alvin’s headstone is located in the General John Swift Memorial Cemetery, which is managed by the city of Palmyra. For a map to the cemetery, click or tap  here .

3. Martin Harris Farm

In 1829, Martin Harris mortgaged his farm to guarantee the $3,000 printing cost for the first edition of the Book of Mormon. The Church now owns some of the property but does not offer tours. The home on the property is not the original home of Martin and Lucy Harris. For a map, click or tap here .

4. Erie Canal

Excavation of the Erie Canal reached Palmyra in 1822. The canal played a key role in the development of the city, and it was the means for transporting the materials E. B. Grandin used to print the Book of Mormon. Today the canal features a walking and biking path. The path passes through the Pal-Mac Aqueduct County Park, which is less than a mile from the Book of Mormon Historic Publication Site. We couldn’t call ourselves Utah’s Adventure Family if we didn’t love Utah history, and Utah history means LDS history. We’ve visited Church History sites all across the country. We love these sites, and they are almost always FREE to visit. On this page, we summarize the LDS Church History sites across the United States. Joseph Smith Birthplace (Sharon, Vermont):

We haven’t quite made it back to this site yet!

Smith Family Farm and Sacred Grove (Palmyra, New York)

This site features the Smith farmhouse and Smith Home. You can also walk through the Sacred Grove where Joseph received the First Vision.

Hill Cumorah (Palmyra, New York)

Located right in Palmyra by the Sacred Grove, the Hill Cumorah is where Joseph received the Golden Plates from Moroni.

Grandin Building (Palymra, New York)

We loved this interactive site which is the original building where the Book of Mormon was published. The kids loved seeing the printing process, and even folded their own Book of Mormon pages.

Whitmer Farm (Fayette, New York)

The Whitmer Farm is where the Church was first organized on April 6, 1830. Our boys liked the fun, interactive Visitor Center at this site.

Joseph Knight and Josiah Stowell homes (Colesville, New York)

This site is not run by the Church, but is in the hands of Church members from the Knight family. It was quite a bit different, but was definitely worth the stop. You must schedule a tour before visiting.

Pennsylvania

Priesthood restoration site (oakland township, pa).

The site of the Priesthood Restoration has the home Emma Hale grew up in, the first home of Joseph and Emma, the site of the restoration of the Aaronic Priesthood, and the location where Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery were baptized.

Kirtland Temple (Kirtland, Ohio)

This site is run by the Community of Christ, but our guide was a volunteer who happened to be LDS. There is a Visitor Center as well as a tour of the temple. One of our favorite Church History Sites, but you’ll pay a fee.

Historic Kirtland (Kirtland, Ohio)

There are many things to see in Historic Kirtland. The most impressive is the Whitney store, where many significant events took place. You can also see such structures as the Whitney home, sawmill, and potash factory. 

Isaac Morley Farm (Kirtland, Ohio)

This is a self-guided walk up to the farm site. There isn’t much to see, and you can see it in about 15 minutes, but it’s close to other sites in Kirtland.

John Johnson Farm (Hyrum, Ohio)

Located southeast of Kirtland, the Johnson Farm is the sight were Joseph Smith lived when he was tarred and feathered. He and Sidney Rigdon received Section 76 in the upstairs room of this house.

Historic Nauvoo (Nauvoo, Illinois)

The crown jewel of the Church History sites is Nauvoo. There are homes of the Apostles, craftsmen and trade sites, and a number of stores, bakeries, and other businesses. It takes more than a full day to visit Nauvoo.

Carthage Jail (Carthage, Illinois)

The site of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. The jail is the original building where the martyrdom took place, and not much has been changed or restored.

Independence Visitors’ Center (Independence, Missouri)

There is a large site in Independence that focuses on Pioneer life and what it might have been like to be a Saint in Missouri.

Liberty Jail (Liberty, Illinois)

This reconstruction takes you back to the dungeon where Joseph and others were imprisoned in for five months.

Far West (Far West, Missouri):

We haven’t visited the cornerstones for Far West Temple.

Adam-ondi-Ahman (Far West, Missouri):

This site is dedicated for the return of the Saints to Missouri, but we haven’t been there.

Haun’s Mill (Far West, Missouri)

A small settlement of Saints was massacred at Haun’s Mill, but we haven’t been there.

Winter Quarters (Omaha, Nebraska)

This is the site of the Saints last jumping off point before heading West. The Pioneers lived in this area for two years before leaving for the Salt Lake Valley.

Martin’s Cove (Wyoming)

There is a tour and small museum that tells of the hardship along the Pioneer trail. 

Independence Rock (Wyoming)

Independence Rock was an important stop along the pioneer trail throughout the 1850s and 1860s. Many pioneers scratched their names and the dates in the rock. The oldest dating back to 1842!

Mormon Battalion (San Diego, California)

There is a wonderful, interactive museum in San Diego that commemorates the end of the Mormon Battalion’s march.

We have loved visiting all of these LDS Church History Sites. They are almost all free and worth a stop. Learning about these early members of the LDS church gives you a greater understanding of Pioneer life in the 1800s and all that they sacrificed for their families and religion. Tour Summary

After leaving Ohio, the Mormons were driven in Missouri, until they arrived in Nauvoo. Here they built a beautiful city unto the Lord, with a Temple at its center.

This tour focuses on “Zion” in Jackson County, Nauvoo and Carthage, as well as the beginning of the trek west in Winter Quarters. The restoration was completed here and the Saints prepared to move where they might begin to build the Kingdom of God. This tour begins in Kansas City and ends in Omaha.

The Nauvoo Tour:

Best enjoyed in summer or winter, unique experiences.

The initial call to settle in Zion would serve as one of the greatest motivating factors for thousands of saints across the world.

You will see Zion, the place designated for the Saints to build a temple in preparation for the return of Jesus Christ to the earth. You will experience the great contrast of Liberty Jail, the cornerstones of Far West, and the beautiful valley where Adam rose to bless his posterity. You will see what the saints built out of a swamp in Commerce and where the greatest doctrines of the restoration were restored. The homes and gardens stand as witness to the events of this sacred place.

To stand on the banks of the Mississippi river on February 4 th , the very anniversary of when the saints left Nauvoo is a thrilling experience. You will silently revel in the spirit of Carthage Jail and the sacred homestead of the Smith Family graveyard. You will see what they built, you will see how they showed their faith and how the Kingdom of God was worth more than any other thing. You will  experience Iowa, you will see, first-hand, why it took them months to cross that state.

You will understand why winter quarters is one of the most sacred places on earth, for those who died there, are never to be forgotten.

Day 4, Sunday:  Church in Nauvoo and Carthage Jail

Day 5, Monday: Nauvoo

Day 6, Tuesday: Walk Down Trail of Hope on Anniversary of Saints Leaving Nauvoo. Travel across Iowa

Day 7, Wednesday: Winter Quarters and Kanesville

Day 8, Thursday: Fly Home
