ZOO, SHELTER OR SANCTUARY?

In recent times, public attention turned towards animals in captivity, and Zoo’s aren’t the exception.

Croco Cun did not start as a zoo, however, our Riviera Maya destination ecological needs, have turned us into a very peculiar one. Most of the specimens have come to our home as donations, as well as rescues or seizures that the environmental authorities have placed under our care.

The residents of our zoo play an important role in the fauna conservation through education and interaction with our visitors.

Cancún Wildlife: Where to See Crocodiles, Flamingo, Monkey, and Other Wildlife

crocodile tour playa del carmen

Cancún is a vibrant city filled with attractions, natural beauty, and every activity you can imagine from leisure to adventure. The wildlife in Cancún is one of its most spectacular appeals. If you’re planning a trip to Cancún, be sure to include some time for seeking out the incredible wildlife.

Where can you see wildlife such as crocodiles, flamingos, and monkeys in Cancún? You can see wildlife in Cancún in several ways. There are many tours, guides, and natural reserves. You can also venture out on your own in some of these areas. Exploring the Mayan Jungle, underground river caves, cenotes, and nearby towns will all be peak viewing for wildlife.

With so many ways to experience wildlife around Cancún, the biggest question you will have to ask yourself is, “Which adventures should I choose?” It will depend on the animals you would like to see and the type of experience you are looking for. We’ll break down all your best options.

Where Can I See Wildlife in Cancún?

While the allure of downtown will lead you to endless entertainment options, luxurious spa treatments, and gorgeous beaches paired with beachside cocktail service – it won’t always be the best area to find wildlife.

The Hotel Zone of Cancún is rich with tourists and local businesses, so much of the wildlife has shifted to the outskirts of these areas. It’s not to say that you won’t get to see your fair share of wildlife around this area. But you won’t get nearly as many different animals, and the experience is quite different.

Catching a glimpse of dolphins in the distance from a crowded beach or marveling at an exotic bird flying overhead while you lounge at a pool party is quite different from being in the middle of an ancient cenote or seeing animals you never thought you’d get to see in person.

You can divide the best places to see wildlife in Cancún into areas to visit , guided tours, and natural parks and reserves .

Best Areas to See Wildlife

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula is home to tens of thousands of cenotes. Each exquisitely unique and filled with new adventures and impressive displays of natural beauty and wildlife. In ancient times, the Mayan civilization relied on these freshwater, natural sinkholes as a place of spiritual significance as well for a source of bountiful fish and other food.

There are many spectacular cenotes only a short drive away. These make for an excellent day tripe adventure while you are staying in Cancún.

A great place to start would be Cenote Siete Bocas. The drive from Cancún is just under an hour, and you will get to experience a great mix of coastal views as well as natural greenery and, hopefully, some animal sightings along the way.

There are seven cenotes in one area, making this a perfect day trip. If you plan to travel outside the downtown area of Cancún, you should make it worth the trip. The water in each of the cenotes is deep, so lifejackets are given out upon entry to the area.

You will get glimpses of different species of fish, turtles, birds as you bathe in the crystal-clear water. If you venture into the vegetation, you may also see some different bird variations, iguanas and geckos, as well as the occasional white-tailed deer.

You can learn more about visiting the area on the Cenote Siete Bocas Facebook page .

If you want to head out into the open ocean for an adventure, taking a boat to Isla Mujeres will be a great way to experience wildlife. Just off the coast of Cancún’s famous beaches, you will find Isla Mujeres in all its glory.

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” – Jacques Yves Cousteau ( source )

This island is a spectacular place to view an array of marine life in a relaxing setting where you can take your time, explore, and enjoy the surroundings. Of the many different animals, you will get to witness in their natural habitat, here are some of the most common .

  • Spiny Lobsters
  • Spotted Moray Eels
  • Whale Shark
  • Nurse Shark

If you plan to go scuba diving or snorkeling in the area, you will be privy to a whole new world of other creatures as well. Even if you plan to stay above water, you will be surrounded by some of the Yucatán’s most beautiful creatures.

To learn more about the Isle, as well as logistics like how to book passage and things to do around the island, you can visit the Isla Mujeres website .

Finding areas just outside of the hotel zone will be your best bet for wildlife. Whether it is along the coast for marine wildlife or viewing some of the creatures of the land in the jungles surrounding Cancún, you will find a wide variety of animals.

Be sure you to be cautious if you are traveling on your own and unfamiliar with the area. Your hotel’s concierge and local wildlife authorities are great resources to learn more about the areas around Cancún that are safe while also spectacular for wildlife viewing.

Best Tours to See Wildlife

If you prefer to have a guide and a more structured way to visit some of the wildlife around Cancún, there are some incredible tours available. These tours are fun-filled, safe, and typically led by locals who will be a wealth of knowledge on the area.

You will get to learn about the animals themselves as well as much of the history of the land and how these animals came to inhabit specific spaces.

Horseback Riding and Cenote Swim

One unique way to visit some of the surrounding wildlife has to be a tour that takes place through the jungles on horseback, leading you to a cenote for swimming. They provide roundtrip transportation from Cancún and Playa Del Carmen.

You will be picked up from your hotel or designated pickup location and transported by tour van to the starting point where you will meet your faithful steed, ready to carry you to the cenote.

While on the tour you will experience all the local flora and fauna of the jungles while your guide informs you about the area’s wildlife. Once you reach the cenote, you will have time to explore or swim if you’d like. There, you will get to see a whole new side of wildlife in the water.

You can find more information on this horseback tour through Viator .

Whale Shark Snorkeling

If you currently have the JAWS theme song in your head and you’re imagining a Great White Shark barreling down on you – don’t worry. The Whale Shark is a gentle giant that makes for an incredible snorkeling experience alongside.

Whale Sharks can measure up to 40 feet and weigh up to around 15 tons. But they are harmless, thankfully.

The tour will be led by a certified staff member who understands all safety measures and procedures to be sure you stay safe on this epic journey. You can get as close as you’d like to these majestic creatures as long as you don’t interfere in any way with their natural habitat.

You will learn all about this incredible animal and the habitat around them. And for convenience, they depart directly from the Cancún Hotel Zone.

If you are interested in taking a dip with these 40-feet beauties, you can check out the Cancún Adventure site for more details.

There are many different tours available throughout Cancún. These two examples show the wide variety of experiences they offer. Your hotel will be a wealth of information on other tours you may be interested in.

Best Parks and Wildlife Areas

The natural parks and wildlife areas in and around Cancún are filled with every type of flora and fauna you would hope for in a tropical paradise.

Sometimes people forget about the more natural areas around Cancún. Even though the Hotel Zone is filled with tourists, Cancún does an amazing job of trying to keep the wildlife happy and healthy.

Many areas outside of the tourist area have stringent rules when it comes to tourism and the activities that are allowed or not. Even within the tourist zone, you will find your fair share of rules.

Aside from the beauty of the natural wildlife around Cancún, they also try to keep the area preserved for its historical significance . The ancient Mayans left behind a wealth of historical landmarks that are honored and kept safe by local authorities.

As you visit parks around Cancún, you will get to appreciate the natural beauty of the wildlife and landscape, as well as some incredible historical landmarks that will take your breath away.

Ta’akbil-Ja

Conveniently located in the Nuevo Xcan area, you can visit caverns and underground cenotes to delight in the many different marine species. Hiking, swimming, rappelling, and lounging among the caves are all encouraged.

They offer tours at this location, but many decide to head here simply to take their time, explore, and relax in nature. You can also ask for a specialized tour for a large group if you’d like to see certain areas.

Ta’akbil Ja is Mayan for “hidden waters.” And there is no more perfect name for this oasis.

You will discover turtles, reptiles, and a large array of different types of fish as you explore the caves and freshwater around the area.

El Eden Ecological Reserve

The gorgeous natural reserve of El Eden is located about 30 miles outside of downtown Cancún. It will be worth a day trip to explore this ecological wonderland that focuses on keeping the natural beauties of the area.

If you are looking for a full tropical rainforest experience, this will be your best bet near Cancún. The reserve is rich in different biological flora and fauna. The variety of trees, shrubs, plants, and herbs make for a welcoming environment to many kinds of animals.

This site is mainly designed for researchers and students to attend and learn. But they also offer day trips for tourists interested in learning more about the rich ecosystem and the incredible wildlife that inhabits it.

You can learn more about their mission, the habitats, wildlife, and how to visit at the El Eden website .

Travel Tip: Having a waterproof camera for underwater pictures will be well worth the money. Between the endless snorkeling adventures around Cancún and cenote diving, you will be able to take home memories from all your underwater adventures among the fish, sharks, stingrays, and bountiful other marine creatures.

Where Can I See Crocodiles in Cancún?

The Nichupté Lagoon in Cancún has become famous (or infamous, depending on how you feel about crocodiles) for crocodile sightings. For a while, they had become quite a problem for local business owners, seeing them coming out of the lagoon more and more.

But as the crocodiles began leaving the lagoon, they also noticed they didn’t have much interest in many tourists. As in any wildlife setting, there is an element of danger due to the unpredictability of wild animals.

But when their territory is not being endangered, and they are not being provoked, the crocs tend to go about their day and ignore you. Right in line with Cancún’s mission to help preserve wildlife, the best warning is: “Don’t mess with them, and they won’t mess with you.”

Be aware of your surroundings, and don’t go diving into cenotes without surveying the area first and knowing if the area is a frequent crocodile haunt.

The many river systems around Cancún will also be a great place to explore for a few crocs. The subtropical rivers provide a perfect atmosphere for crocodiles. Their numbers have dwindled over the years in the rivers and lagoons, but you can still find them lurking from time to time.

Where Can I See Monkeys in Cancún?

While you may not catch many monkeys around the downtown Cancún area, there are some great places to visit nearby that will fulfill your every wish of seeing these adorable little pranksters jumping from tree to tree.

One of the best spots is the Punta Laguna Monkey Reserve. This reserve not too far outside of Cancún will have any fan of the animal excited and ready to go. The just under 2-hour drive to this reserve in Punta Laguna makes it a great day trip from Cancún.  After the long bus ride, your reward will be seeing monkeys in their natural habitat.

This sanctuary is a protected area equivalent to about 10,000 football fields. You can hike through the forest to see monkeys playing, eating, and living in their natural habitat.  There might be time for a canoe ride through the lagoon.

If you want to be sure to get as many glimpses of the monkeys as possible, you can opt for a guide who will know where to go and how to find them. Otherwise, you can go on your own and do your best to spot them.

Because this is a protected environment, the monkeys tend to be playful and vocal when they see humans. They won’t exactly be ready to jump on your shoulder and eat from your hands, but they feel safe in their natural habitat and unthreatened by humans passing through.

Therefore, it’s essential to be respectful of their space and their ecosystem when you visit.

“If we can teach people about wildlife, they will be touched. Share my wildlife with me. Because humans want to save things that they love.” ― Steve Irwin ( source )

Where Can I See Flamingos in Cancún?

Flamingos are not often seen in their natural habitat. While seeing them at a zoo can be beautiful, it’s not getting to see them how they truly are in the wild.

The closest and best bet for some flamingo sightings will be in the town of Río Lagartos. They offer many different tours so you can see these beautiful and unique birds out on the water and in their natural habitat among each other.

Río Lagartos will take you about 3 hours from Cancún, but the drive itself and the views you will get of these birds make it worth it. Since you can still do this easily in a day trip, Río Lagartos makes for a great way to get out of the hustle and bustle of Cancún for the day without needing additional housing accommodations.

This village seems untouched by tourism, and the flamingos appreciate it. They are almost always lounging in the lakes and wetlands around the area. On top of witnessing these exquisite birds, there are another 395+ species of birds here. So, for any bird lovers, this will be a day trip to add to the list while visiting Cancún.

Cancún Wildlife

The wildlife of Cancún is a reminder of the natural beauty that exists around such a popular tourism area. It’s easy to get swept up in the nightlife, pool parties, and spa days. But make sure you take some time to explore the incredible wildlife Cancún and the Yucatan have to offer.

Wildlife and bugs go hand-in-hand, so you better take a look at one of our most popular posts about insects and bugs in Cancún.

Sian Ka’an has breathtaking wildlife!

When you are in the hustle and bustle of Tulum, it’s hard to believe that there is such an impressive nature reserve with stunning wildlife just a few kilometers away. But yes, this is true! The Sian Ka’an nature reserve hosts more than 300 species of birds and animals such as dolphins, turtles and crocodiles, that fascinate young and old alike. Also present in the biosphere, are jaguars, manatees, panthers, hammerhead sharks, and stingrays.  All of these species are living in their natural habitat and appear much to the delight of our visitors.  Enjoy a great experience with Pixan Ka’an. 💚

Reviews about our Sian Ka'an tours

Our travel guide to sian ka'an, what to do in sian ka’an .

Most visitors who visit the reserve come for the iconic animals like the dolphins and turtles. Watching them is definitely an unforgettable experience. There are many other activities to do in Sian Ka’an . You can spend a peaceful night in Punta Allen, snorkel on the reef, visit the archaeological site of Muyil, practice sport fishing, explore the mangroves, walk in the jungle…

How to get to Sian Ka'an?

The Sian Ka’an Biosphere has two parts to explore: Muyil and Punta Allen. In Muyil you can visit the ancient archaeological site, watch birds, and float down the turquoise lagoon channels. In Punta Allen, you can observe many animals such as dolphins, go snorkeling, and visit an authentic fishing village. Muyil and Punta Allen have a completely different access point. So, if you are looking to understand how to get to Sian Ka’an , you should first decide which area you want to visit first. Muyil is easy to reach while Punta Allen is a bit more complicated because of the long road.

Is Sian Ka’an worth it?

Sian Ka’an is a natural reserve classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Sian Ka’an is a remote area south of Tulum, and is the only spot in the Riviera Maya, where you can see an abundance of animals living in their natural habitat. • gabrielgK3141SM 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent 3 day birding tour with Carlos Carlos led a 3 day birding trip for me and my wife through Contoy Excursions. Highly recommended! After pickup in Cancun we birded Ruta de los Cenotes, then stayed in Valladolid for two nights, hitting Las Coloradas one day and Coba the next. Carlos is an interesting and laid back guy, very fun to spend time with. He's an excellent guide both for birds and the region generally. Before and throughout the trip he consulted us to see if we wanted to make diversions to see particular Cenotes, archeological sites, and birding hot spots. He offered to fully customize the itinerary, but the one he set up sounded perfect so I mainly went with that. Good decision. Carlos is a skilled birder. He knew where to find particular birds we wanted to see, and structured the trip so we'd see the maximum number of species and micro-environments. I ended up seeing 87 lifers in just those three days! My wife and I are both experienced birders from the eastern US, but had never birded in a tropical setting... it was overwhelming and wonderful. Too many highlights to name but we loved seeing Toucans, Aracaris, King Vulture, Flamingos, Red-Legged Honeycreeper, multiple Trogon, Parrot, Woodcreeper and Euphonia species, Turquoise-Browed Motmot, every possible Oriole species (minus migrants), lots of Yucatan endemics like Oceolated Turkey, Yucatan woodpecker, Yellow-lored Parrot, Mexican Sheartail, Yucatan Wren... the list goes on and on. Equally amazing: seeing a troop of 50+ spider monkeys (with babies in tow), hearing a large cat's shriek (Jaguarundi?), seeing a rare yucatan deer, and seeing plants like orchids and achiote in the wild. Beyond just the birding Carlos created a great experience for our first Yucatan peninsula visit. Valladolid is a great place to stay and explore on foot in the evenings. The hotel he picked was quite nice. The restaurants he took us too were always good, and he helped us try local foods. He's a local who speaks Mayan and told us about the region's history and culture. We saw (and swam in) two different Cenotes, and birding Coba was great as there were ruins and birds. Overall the tour was a wonderful experience and I'd recommend it to anyone. Read more Written 26 March 2024

My fiancée and I love birdwatching and were so excited for this tour. We saw 64 species thanks to Carlos! Without him, we really wouldn’t have seen more than the grackles, Eurasian collared doves and pelicans in and around the city. Carlos was awesome. He is attentive easy going, and we really enjoyed him sharing his historical knowledge with us. We would definitely book again if we returned to Cancun :) Read more Written 22 March 2024

Great experience on the 6 day tour with mostly birding activities combined with a mix of archaeological visits to Muyil and Chichen Itza. Birding was spectacular and we saw over 180 species in total. Carlos and Lugo who were our guises were absolutely incredible and meticulously kept track of where to find which species to help with our watching and also photography. They are friendly and amazing and did everything to make our trip special. Some of the accomodations were basic but that is understandable given the remote nature of some of the parks we visited. I was impressed by the ease of booking with Contoy, confirmation and information was very clear, pick-up on time and easy. Lugo was amazing; superb guide, obviously loves what he does and made the whole trip so enjoyable. He spotted so many birds - total of 47! So many highlights but the pygmy owl and hawk were amazing as was how they were spotted by Lugo! We absolutely loved the whole experience and cannot recommend this trip highly enough. Having stayed in Cancun for a 10 day trip enjoying the shoreside bird life on casual morning walks, I yearned to experience more of the countries woodland species and found the Full-Day Birdwatching Puerto Morelos tour on line. Travelling from Cancun to the region with Carlos, it soon became apparent of his love of birdwatching and a very knowledge of the birds of Mexico. We talked “birding” constantly for the duration. Once arrived and meeting up with two more, we were up and running with 64 species seen in a four hour period. At times there was so much happening it was a really full on jumping from one species to another. The skill Carlos showed on locating and identifying various species was second to none. Some were so small but his ability to identify quickly was very impressive. If you want a taster of some of the beautiful birds of Mexico, you can’t go wrong with this trip. The excitement Carlos showed when latching onto another species was infectious. Thank you so much for a great outing. Read more Written 8 December 2023

13 Best Cenotes near Playa Del Carmen (2023)

Playa del Carmen cenotes

With its idyllic white sand beaches, sprawling resorts and easy access to incredible Mayan ruins and crystal clear cenotes, Playa del Carmen is one of Mexico’s most popular tourist towns. From the shallow waters of Cenote Azul, one of Playa del Carmen’s most popular cenotes, to the beautiful Zacil-Ha Cenote in neighboring Tulum, there are some amazing cenotes near Playa Del Carmen just waiting to be explored.

Having visited, and loved, so many amazing cenotes from Playa Del Carmen, we wanted to share to our favorites – this is our guide to the 13 cenotes near Playa Del Carmen!

Playa del Carmen cenotes

What are Cenotes?

A cenote, pronounced seh-NO-tay, are water-filled sinkholes that naturally occur in limestone rock when an underground cave collapses in on itself and exposes the groundwater underneath. There are thousands of cenotes dotted around the Yucatan Peninsula and some of the Playa Del Carmen cenotes are extremely popular with locals and tourists alike.

The water in the cenotes tends to be cool as the water comes from underground so they are great for a refreshing swim to cool off from the hot Mexican sunshine.

In Mayan times a number of the cenotes were used for sacrificial purposes and objects such as gold, pottery and even human and animal remains have been found at the bottom of some cenotes.

The cenotes near Playa Del Carmen are a mix of open, semi-open or underground:

  • Open cenotes: These are caves which have completely collapsed in on themselves and are exposed to the sky. These are our favourite as you can swim in the open air, the water is a pleasant temperature and there are usually lots of areas to relax by the water. Our favorite open cenote in Playa Del Carmen is Cenote Azul, Cenote Zacil-Ha in nearby Tulum and Cenote Oxman near Valladolid.

Cenote Oxman Valladolid

  • Semi-open cenotes: these cenotes are mostly underground but have small openings in the ceiling where light and fresh air come in.  These cenotes can be particularly beautiful as the light beams illuminate the crystal clear water below. Our favorite semi-open cenote near Playa Del Carmen is   Cenote Ik Kil which can be visited as part of a day trip to Chichen Itza and Cenote Samula , one of the cenotes near Valladolid .

Best Cenotes near VAlladolid

  • Underground cenotes: these cenotes are completely underground in a cave system and have no natural light to illuminate the cenote water. The three cenotes near the Coba ruins (Multum-Ha, Tamchach-Ha and Choo-Ha) are amazing underground cenotes you can easily visit from Playa Del Carmen on a longer stay.

11 Best Cenotes near Playa Del Carmen

These are our favorite cenotes near Playa Del Carmen – we think they are a great inclusion in any Playa Del Carmen or Yucatan itinerary!

1 | Cenote Azul

Best for: Cenote Azul is best for families, open-air swimming, chilling in the water and having some fun jumping from the relatively easy natural platforms.

The large open air Cenote Azul , with its shallow waters and fun cliff jump, is one of our favorite Playa Del Carmen cenotes. The main cenote is split into two swimming areas which are separated by a wooden boardwalk. The shallow side of the cenote, where younger kids can paddle in the clear waters, is popular with families. The deeper pool has a cliff perched above it which is great for having some fun jumping into the cenote. Snorkeling is also popular on this side.

Best Playa Del Carmen Cenotes tip: Cenote Azul is easily accessible from Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum and, as a result, gets very busy. We recommend visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the peak crowds.

How to get to Cenote Azul: Cenote Azul is easily accessed by rental car ( check prices now! ), a local Colectivo or a quick taxi ride. Colectivos leave from 2nd street in Playa Del Carmen, just tell the driver you want to get out at Cenote Azul.

4 | Cenote Carwash

A neighbor of the previously mentioned Zacil- Ha, the small and relaxed Cenote Ak Tun Ha is also known the Carwash Cenote as it was once used for exactly that, washing cars! The cenote has a large open air pool which is just feet from the car park and a variety of wildlife lives within its waters.

Fish and turtles swim in an underwater world of stalactites and stalagmites and a little resident crocodile occasionally makes an appearance. The undergrowth leads to a cave section. Cenote Carwash reaches up to 50 feet in depth and it is common to see divers emerging from its waters.

Visitors can swim, kayak or paddle board in the cenote and, at only 6 meters deep, it is family friendly. Snorkeling is popular at Casa Cenote and it also attracts divers with its underwater cave system which leads directly to the ocean.

How to get to Casa Cenote: Casa Cenote is easily accessed by rental car ( check prices now! ), a local Colectivo (if you don’t mind the walk from the highway) or a taxi ride. Colectivos leave from 2nd street in Playa Del Carmen, just tell the driver you want to get out at Casa Cenote – it is about a 20 minute walk along a dirt road surrounded by jungle.

Casa Cenote ticket cost:  entrance to Casa Cenote is $150 pesos.

9 | Cenote Tajma Ha

It is most popular with divers as it’s one of the best cenotes near Playa Del Carmen for scuba diving. There are a number of companies that run dive tours into the cenote and the fresh water dives are most suited to intermediate and advanced divers. If have a diving certification, Cenote Tajma Ha is the best one to try.

Cenotes to visit on Day Trips from Playa Del Carmen

Most visitors to Playa Del Carmen want to experience at least one of the ancient Mayan ruin sites that are located around the Yucatan Peninsula. We wanted to include these incredible cenotes which are easily included in a trip to some of the Yucatan’s most famous ruins: Chichen Itza, Coba and Ek Balam.

10 | Cenote Ik Kil at Chicen Itza

Best for: those who want to experience one of the most beautiful cenotes in Mexico

Chichen Itza is one of the most popular day trips from Playa Del Carmen and the nearby Cenote Ik Kil is one of the most beautiful cenotes on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Playa del Carmen cenotes

The roof of Cenote Ik Kil has collapsed entirely and tree roots cascade into the cenote waters making for a spectacular scene. Gazing up at the open sky while swimming in Cenote Ik Kil is a surreal experience and we absolutely recommend including it in a visit to Chichen Itza. It’s easily accessible from Playa Del Carmen and, even if you don’t have your own transport, most tours include a stop at Cenote Ik Kil.

Playa del Carmen cenotes

Best Playa Del Carmen Cenotes tip: Cenote Ik Kil can get very busy in the middle of the day with the many tours and individuals which arrive as part of a trip to Chichen ItzaWe recommend arriving at Cenote Ek Kil early – it is best to arrive at 9am for the cenote opening. One of the easiest ways to do this is to stay nearby. We stayed at the Mayaland Hotel and Bungalows in order to visit Chichen Itza at sunrise followed by a visit to Cenote Ik Kil which is a 5-minute drive from the hotel – book your stay now!

How to get to Cenote Ik Kil: Cenote Ik Kil is easily reached by rental car  ( check prices now! ) . It is also possible to take the dedicated ADO coach which travels from Playa Del Carmen to Chicen Itza although be prepared for an almost 4 hour journey time. Probably the easiest way (aside from a rental car) to visit Cenote Ik Kil is part of a tour to Chichen Itza. There are a number of tours from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum that include Cenote Ik Kil as part of a day trip itinerary –  check prices now!

Book your tour now!

Cenote Ik Kil ticket cost:  Cenote Ik Kil entry is $150 pesos per person.

If you are planning a visit, check out our detailed guide to Cenote Ik Kil – click here to read!

11 | Cenote Xcanche at Ek Balam

Best for:  independent travelers as many group tours do not allow time to visit, those seeking a refreshing swim after exploring the ruins, adventurers who like jumping and ziplining

Ek Balam is a popular excursion with many visitors to Mexico wanting to experience a less well known Mayan ruin. A beautiful cenote, the Ek Balam Cenote Xcanche, is located in the same village and is accessed close to the entrance of the Ek Balam archaeological zone.

Cenote Xcanche is a stunning open cenote with a waterfall streaming into the cenote. As well as swimming, zip-lining and swing jumps are also popular at this quiet cenote.

Playa del Carmen cenotes

Xcanche is the perfect place to relax and cool off after a busy morning exploring Ek Balam ruins and we highly recommend taking the time to visit this cenote.

Best Playa Del Carmen cenotes tip:  the cenote entrance is located before the ticket checks for Ek Balam so you can visit the ruins and the cenote independently.

How to get to Cenote Xcanche:  Cenote Xcanche is located around 2 km from the entrance to Ek Balam  ruins. You can walk, cycle or take a bike taxi. We took a bike taxi over after exploring the Ek Balam ruins. From Playa Del Carmen, Ek Balam is easily accessed by rental car ( check prices now! ) or by taking a bus to Valladolid and making the rest of the journey by colectivo or taxi.

Cenote Xcanche ticket cost:  a ticket to Cenote Xcanche is $70 pesos. The return taxi bike, including the entrance ticket, cost us $150 pesos in total.

12 | Cenote Suytun

Best for: experiencing the light beams cascading into the cenote cave, Instagrammers

The spectacular Cenote Suytun became Instagram famous a few years ago.  Cenote Suytun is famous for the beautiful light beams that stream down through the roof of the cenote onto the circular platform below. This cenote definitely lives up to the hype – it really is as beautiful in person as it is in photos. A visit is easily combined with a trip to the Coba ruins and only adds around an hour to the return journey from Playa Del Carmen.

Visitors are also allowed to swim in Cenote Suytun but many just stop by for the purpose of capturing some memorable photos. Swimmers are required to wear life jackets.

Playa del Carmen cenotes

Playa Del Carmen Cenotes tip: For most of the Playa Del Carmen Cenotes we recommend an early or late visit as the best way to avoid the crowds. However, the light beams at Cenote Suytun mean that a late morning/afternoon visit is best – this is when the light beams are most likely to shine directly onto the circular platform, a magical experience. The afternoons at Cenote Suytun can be busy with tour buses but sometimes busy can be best!

How to get to Cenote Suytun:  Cenote Suytun is easily accessed by rental car ( check prices now! ). Alternatively, take an ADO bus to Valladolid and, from there, a local Colectivo or a quick taxi ride will take you to the ruins. There are also a number of tours from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum that include Cenote Suytun as part of a day trip to Chichen Itza – check prices now!

Cenote Suytun ticket prices : entry is $200 pesos per person.

If you are planning a visit, check out our detailed guide to Cenote Suytun – click here to read!

Playa del Carmen cenotes

13 | The Coba Cenotes

Many visitors to Playa del Carmen make the day trip to the incredible Mayan ruins at Coba and there are 3 great cenotes located close to the Coba ruins entrance: Cenote Choo-Ha , Tamcach-Ha and Multum-Ha are a series of small cenotes which are perfect for a refreshing swim after exploring the incredible jungle ruins.

Playa del Carmen cenotes

Cenote Choo-Ha, Tamcach-Ha and Multum-Ha are all underground cenotes: two are caves while Multum-Ha has a small opening in the roof.

Playa del Carmen cenotes

Choo-Ha, with its crystal clear waters and interesting rock formations was our favorite and the shallow waters make it perfect for a family visit. Tamcach-Ha, just a few hundred meters away, is equally as beautifully and the jumping platforms add a fun element to a swim. Cenote Multum-Ha takes a little more effort to get to as it’s a few kilometers away but its deep waters and light beams which descend through the small hole in the roof, are lovely to experience.

Best Playa Del Carmen cenotes tip: The Coba cenotes are not heavily visited by tourists so they are super quiet. We had two of them entirely to ourselves when we visited which was amazing!

How to get to Coba cenotes: These cenotes are most easily reached by rental car from Playa del Carmen ( check prices now! ) as part of a day trip to the Coba ruins. Some tours to the Coba ruins include some of the cenotes but not all. For this reason we highly recommend renting a car in Cancun .

Coba Cenote ticket cost:  a ticket covering all three cenotes is $100 pesos.

What to bring when visiting the Playa del Carmen Cenotes

Visiting a cenote is a little different to visiting a traditional swimming pool and we highly recommend taking the following when visiting the cenotes near Playa Del Carmen

Many of the cenotes are cash only and do not accept credit cards. Some of the cenotes accept cash at the entrance but not for incidentals such as food, drinks and life jackets.

Some of the larger cenotes offer towel rental however it’s much easier and cheaper to simply take your own with you. Microfibre towels are fantastic as they pack small and dry super quick, making them great for the cenotes where you will be hopping back in a car after your swim – check prices on Amazon!

crocodile tour playa del carmen

Swim shoes are great as they give you more grip on the walk-ways around the cenotes and prevent the fish from nibbling your feet! They also help a lot for the shallower entrances at some cenotes where you have to walk on submerged rocks. They’re super cheap and light so make sure to throw them in your bag before you visit the Yucatan! – check prices now!

crocodile tour playa del carmen

Buy now on Amazon

While you cannot wear sunscreen or mosquito spray in the cenotes while swimming, you’ll likely spend some time chilling in the sun after your swim.

Waterproof Camera

An action camera such as a GoPro or an Osmo Action is great for snapping photos and video. We loved having our Osmo Action Waterproof camera with us when visiting the cenotes. It allowed us to take some really fun video and photos while swimming in the cenotes. The wide-angle lens was great for capturing the entire view of the cenotes – check prices now!

Well you are certainly an optimist.

Whilst the odd crocodile has been sighted I think that this is more likely to be on a golf course for example although one has fell in to a swimming pool before.

As for snakes and spiders no doubt they are around if you look hard enough.

Most people just get bit to death by the mozzies so take lots of spray

And, of course, mosquitos -- that only bothered us at one resort, for a short time one evening, after rain. And iguanas -- lots and lots of iguanas, of all shapes and sizes. And flamingos.

Oh, I actually have seen crocodiles -- but they were in a croc exhibit/enclosure at a resort.

And we've seen birds -- all different kinds of birds.

There may be more I've forgotten - but I've never seen scorpion or spiders, or any crocs other than what I mentioned in the enclosure. We did stay at a resort where we heard there was a croc in one of the pools in the morning - but the staff fished it out and put it back into the pond that was on the resort, where it most likely came from - not the ocean/beach.

I will add a different kind of alert for Playa. It has recently been reported that a jaguar has been sighted several times on a local college campus and they have warned students to be cautious walking , especially at night. Would love to see a jaguar but not like that.

crocodile tour playa del carmen

Hubby caught a glimpse of a Jaguar early one morning on the beach north of the Palladium before Unico was built. He went for a walk, saw the footprints in the sand (got some good pics of those) and he was looking to where the footprints went and caught sight of the jaguar as it melted into the bush just before the abandoned resort about 50 yards ahead of him. I would love to have seen that.

Crocs are around but they are also nocturnal hunt only fish, not humans. They hang out in lagoons, not at sea, unless they were somehow disturbed from their home (like after a hurricane). I was told they are only a danger for lagoon nighttime fishermen that carry their catch tied to their belt.

I would love to see a jaguar!

From the vibrant tropical birds to the curious coatis and capybara in Mexico that roam around, it’s an animal lover’s paradise!

Thirteen individual species of animals in Playa del Carmen play an integral part in the Mayan cosmogony. These same creatures are also represented as constellations within the Mayan zodiac.

If you’re planning on vacationing in Playa del Carmen this year, here are some animals in Playa del Carmen you might be lucky enough to spot on your trip!

Animals in Playa del Carmen Video

If you’re more into videos of animals than photos, check out our video summary of animals in Playa del Carmen. It’s not exhaustive of a list as this blog post, but it’s got some highlights.

Marine Animals in Playa del Carmen

The best way to see any of these aquatic creatures in Playa del Carmen is to either visit one of the animal sanctuaries or eco-parks, or to book a guided tour .

1. Sea Turtles

crocodile tour playa del carmen

The nearby sea village of Akumal is the best place to see turtles in Playa del Carmen. Well, near Playa del Carmen . Akumal is about a 15-minute drive south of the town.

👉 This Akumal snorkeling tour is a great way to see sea turtles and other aquatic creatures!

The waters around this area are home to numerous species of turtles, including green and loggerhead sea turtles, which can often be seen swimming close to shore or basking in the sun on the white sand beaches.

These animals in Playa del Carmen have been living in harmony with the locals for centuries, and it’s truly an incredible experience to spend just a few minutes observing them in their natural environment.

If you visit at the right time of year, you can even go down to select beaches at night to watch baby turtles hatch and swim out to sea.

Manatees are one of the aquatic animals in Playa del Carmen.

Home to some of the most beautiful manatees in Mexico, Playa del Carmen is the perfect place to observe these gentle giants. Manatees are endemic to the Mexican Caribbean!

The Xel-Ha Eco Park on the Riviera Maya coastline is a great place to start your manatee adventure. Here, you can see the manatees in their saltwater oceanarium and get up close and personal with these majestic creatures.

If you want to see wild manatees, there aren’t any in Playa del Carmen. However, the mangroves of Sian Ka’an Biosphere Preserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Center , are a great place to see them leisurely floating along in their natural environment.

👉 This Sian Ka’an tour is your best chance to see wild manatees! And dolphins!

No matter where you choose to go in or near Playa del Carmen, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience when it comes to spotting manatees. So grab your camera and head out on an adventure – you won’t regret it!

Dolphins are one of the aquatic animals in Playa del Carmen

If you want to see wild dolphins in their natural habitat, there are several options available for dolphin-watching tours off the Yucatan Coast from Playa del Carmen .

👉 Join a Sian Ka’an tour to observe dolphins play and interact with each other. You can also see manatees!

The most commonly seen wild dolphin species seen in Playa del Carmen are the spotted and bottlenose dolphins, although you might also be lucky enough to see pilot whales or other marine wildlife in Playa del Carmen.

There are also several dolphinariums and eco-parks with captive animals. These have been bred in captivity, and I don’t recommend them. None of the dolphinariums in Riviera Maya have large enough living spaces for the dolphins.

4. Whale Shark

David Whale Shark Snorkeling

Swimming with wild whale sharks was one of the coolest things we did while living in Playa del Carmen . These gentle giants visit the Playa del Carmen area every year, from June 1st to September 15th.

👉 During this time, take part in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with these gentle giants .

When swimming with whale sharks , there are a few things you should keep in mind.

First and foremost, it’s important to remember that these animals are wild and must be respected. It’s also important to stay at least six feet away from them at all times.

And, it’s best to wear a wetsuit or rash guard when snorkeling so that you don’t accidentally touch the whale shark or startle it in any way.

This will also protect you from UV rays in the hot, Mexican sun.

5. Howler Monkey

Howler monkeys are common animals in Monteverde.

The howler monkey is a species of primate found in Playa del Carmen. They are the loudest animals in the rainforest and can be heard from miles away!

You may hear one – or more! – in Playa del Carmen but never actually see them.

These animals have black or brown fur with pale yellow undersides. They live in groups known as troops and feed mainly on leaves, fruit, nuts, and insects.

You may be lucky enough to spot these animals in Playa del Carmen in the wild but you can also take full-day tours to a reserve where you’ll have the chance to observe Playa del Carmen monkeys, including howlers, in their natural habitat.

6. Spider Monkey

Spider monkeys are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, seeing wild spider monkeys in Playa del Carmen is a must.

👉 You can also take a full-day tour to Punta Laguna and Cenote Calavera to see wild spider and howler monkeys!

Tours depart from Playa del Carmen or elsewhere in Rivera Maya . This is where you’ll have the chance to observe other Playa del Carmen wildlife.

The Jungle Place Spider Monkey Sanctuary Playa del Carmen is the other best place to go to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

This sanctuary provides food and shelter for the endangered spider monkey species that have been rescued.

Mexican long nosed bats are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

Bats are a common sight in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The most commonly found species include the Brazilian Free-tailed Bat, the Mexican Long-nosed Bat, and the Cave Myotis.

The Brazilian Free-tailed Bat is a small, insectivorous bat found in many parts of Mexico . It roosts in large colonies in caves, mines, and buildings.

The Mexican Long-nosed Bat is a migratory species that feeds on flowers and nectar from cacti and agaves.

Finally, the Cave Myotis eats insects and is found in caves located throughout central Mexico . It is a small bat with a distinctive nose.

Although bats can be intimidating to some people, they are actually harmless animals in Playa del Carmen that help keep insect populations under control.

Don’t forget to look up at the night sky. You may spot a bat eating some mosquitos!

8. White Nosed Coati

Two white nosed coatis walking through the grass at a resort in Playa del Carmen.

These diurnal creatures have become a bit of a plague at all-inclusive resorts throughout Playa del Carmen. They’re one of the most common Playa del Carmen animals in Mexico resorts.

Their populations exploded when the hotels were mostly empty during the pandemic.

Now that humans have returned to their gluttonous dining habits at the various resorts and restaurants , the fearless coatis are often seen stalking dining tables and trash cans.

The animals are cute, especially the babies, and can often be seen in packs. However, they can be dangerous if provoked.

So, if you see one while out exploring, it’s probably best to admire them from a distance.

Do NOT feed them or toss them table scraps. This behavior makes them more aggressive toward humans.

9. Yucatan Squirrel

Yucatan squirrels are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

The Yucatan Squirrel is an arboreal species of rodent native to Mexico and Central America . Its fur ranges from light gray to black and it has a white stripe along its back, making it very distinctive.

It can often be seen running around palm trees in Playa del Carmen, as well as at other resorts throughout the region.

It is an important species in the local ecosystem, as its diet consists of fruits, nuts, and insects.

These animals in Playa del Carmen can be quite bold at times and may even approach people to beg for food.

If you are lucky enough to spot one on your trip, remember not to feed it or disturb it too much.

Iguanas are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

The Iguana is a large lizard found throughout Mexico and Central America. It can be seen sunning itself on rocks near water bodies in Playa del Carmen , such as Xcaret or the beach at Maroma Bay.

They’re also often found at the various all-inclusive resorts throughout Playa del Carmen. We love seeing them relaxing throughout our favorite eco-resort there.

Iguanas are herbivorous animals in Playa del Carmen and are often seen grazing on vegetation.

They are harmless animals if left alone, but they can become aggressive if they feel threatened or are provoked.

It’s best to admire them from a distance and not attempt to get too close.

11. Central American Agouti

Central American Agouti standing on a grassy hill with foliage behind it.

The Central American Agouti is a large rodent in Mexico and Central America. We first saw one at a friend’s wedding in Tulum several years ago !

It can often be seen scampering through the underbrush in Playa del Carmen, usually near water sources or in mangrove forests.

They remind me of a mix between a rabbit and a guinea pig. They have large rear haunches with long front legs like a bunny but a rat-like face like a guinea pig.

Agoutis are primarily herbivorous animals in Playa del Carmen that feed on nuts, fruits, and other vegetation.

You’re most likely to see one running away. Every time we’ve seen one it’s been running away, absolutely terrified!

Frogs are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

From the Central American Gulf Coast Toad to the Giant Toad, Sabinal Frog, Yellow Tree Frog, and more, Playa del Carmen is home to a wide variety of amphibians.

The Central American Gulf Coast Toad is one of the most common frogs in Playa del Carmen.

It’s a dark brown color with yellowish spots on its back and sides. It’s nocturnal and found near water like rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes.

Another interesting species is the Giant Toad which can grow up to 8 inches long! They have gray or olive-green skin with black spots or stripes on their backs.

These frogs are mainly terrestrial but they do need access to water for breeding purposes.

The Sabinal Frog is another species that can be found in Playa del Carmen. This frog has a bright yellow color with black spots on its back and sides.

It’s typically found near streams or rivers where it feeds on insects such as crickets and grasshoppers.

Finally, the Yellow Tree Frog is an arboreal species that lives in trees near bodies of water such as rivers or streams.

It’s a bright yellow color with black stripes running down its back and sides. It feeds on insects like ants and beetles but will also eat small fish if available.

13. Yucatan Salamander

crocodile tour playa del carmen

The Yucatan salamander is a native animal of Mexico that you wouldn’t automatically expect to find in Playa del Carmen but it can be found living in the region’s cenotes and caves.

Sometimes it comes out of hiding and you can see it on a sidewalk or next to a path when you’re walking in the evenings.

This amphibian has a reddish-brown coloration with pale yellow stripes running down its back and sides. It feeds mainly on insects and is typically seen at night.

14. Butterflies

Butterflies are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

There are a wide variety of butterflies in Playa del Carmen, including the White-edged Red-ring, Little Banner, and more.

If you’re visiting the ancient Coba Mayan ruins , be sure to take a leisurely drive down Tulum and Chemax – Yucatan’s path less traveled.

You’ll find yourself admiring countless Orange-Yellow Sulphur butterflies feasting on nectar from vibrant flowers and succulent fruits along the way!

15. Capybara

Capybaras are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

The capybara is a large rodent native to Central and South America that can be found in Playa del Carmen. It has reddish-brown fur on its back and sides with pale yellow undersides.

It’s an amphibious species that loves the water and is usually seen near rivers , streams, or ponds. It feeds mainly on aquatic plants but will also eat fruit, nuts, and insects.

The capybara Playa del Carmen is a unique species that can be seen in the wild if you’re lucky enough to spot it!

We haven’t been fortunate enough to see one yet, but we keep looking when we’re in Playa del Carmen!

16. Boa Constrictor

Boa constrictors are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

The boa constrictor is a species of snake found in Playa del Carmen. It’s a large, non-venomous constrictor that can be seen slithering around the region’s forests and cenotes.

It’s allegedly common but we still haven’t seen one. They’re pretty good at camouflaging, though!

It has grayish-brown or tan scales with black splotches running down its back and sides. It feeds mainly on birds and small animals in Playa del Carmen, like rodents, but will also eat fish if available.

The boa constrictor is an incredible species to observe in the wild and you may be lucky enough to spot one if you visit Playa del Carmen! So keep your eyes peeled!

17. Orchid Bee

Orchid bees are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

You may have seen this unique bee and not even realized it! The bee is bright, emerald green! It has a metallic sheen which is why it’s called the Orchid Bee.

These animals are found in tropical and subtropical climates such as in Playa del Carmen and can often be seen hovering around flowers, feeding on nectar.

They’re named after their favorite nectar flower, the orchid.

Strolling through Playa del Carmen’s lush jungles outside of town can be an awe-inspiring experience.

You just might have the fortune to spot this captivating, bright-green bee!

18. The Xoloitzcuintle

Mexican hairless dogs are common animals in Playa del Carmen.

The Mexican Hairless Dog is a unique breed, celebrated as part of Mexico’s living heritage for its distinct lack of fur. It’s one of the animals native to Mexico on this list.

Some members of the breed have a little fur on their bodies while others are born with full fur coverage.

This breed of dog derives its name from Xolo (the Aztec deity of fire) and the ancient Nahuatl word “itzcuintli” – which translates to “dog.”

While these aren’t wild creatures that roam the streets of Playa del Carmen, they’re still a really special sight to see. They’re popular Cancun animals to have as pets for some locals.

This is to ensure its safety and well-being, as well as that of other animals in the area.
