These are run by volunteers, which are really proud of their area.

You most likely be greeted by bagpipes as you arrive in super friendly Greenock.

The cruise terminal is only around 1 km walk from the city centre of Greenock. There are a couple of nice walks around the town or even hikes up the hill but that is about it.

There are a hand full of volunteers that have such an amazing love for their region that they offer free tours in the cruise terminal. They don’t take you to anything mind blowing, but the fact that can step into detail about their region and tell you stories with such passion is what makes this worth it. Find them in the cruise terminal, but please know there is a very limited amount of spots available. You can also book online:  http://www.inverclydetouristgroup.co.uk/content/tours/#tours  The tours are free, but we highly recommend to tip big as renting buses and guides doesn’t come cheap.

From here you can easily reach Glasgow and Edinburgh.  You can check the train schedule through the following link:  http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/planjourney/search  . If you are planning in taking a trip to Edinburg, we not stop for coffee in Glasgow as it is on the way.

From Greenock you take bus 901 or 906 to Dundas street, Glasgow. Walk 1 minute to the Glasgow Queen Street and take the train to Stirling. From here the castle is about 15 minute walk.

Edinburgh

It is hard not to fall in love with the city of Edinburg. Layers of history make this a unique city to visit and fair warning: one you get a taste of it, you want more. There are hundreds of historical sights in the city itself. Walk the royal mile from Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle, visit the spot where Harry Potter was written or spend you day pub crawling. A day in Edinburgh will never be disappointing.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Glasgow

In the late 19th century it was the 2nd largest city of the British Empire (after London). It was the centre of the Scottish trade and industry. In the ’60’s she lost that position when the shipyards closed one by one. The past is still reflected in the architecture of the city: Classic Georgian facades, baroque palaces, victorian buildings display the wealth of the former industrial superpower.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Glasgow Cruise Port

Like other parts of the British Isles, Scottish food is regionally influenced by British traditions. Haggis, though often made fun of as a Scottish food option, is well worth a try during a cruise to Glasgow. Don’t miss the traditional Scottish breakfast, a full plate of eggs, sausage, baked beans, scones, black pudding, butter, and a roasted tomato. Indulge in local oysters or order the famous fish and chips you’ll find at pubs.

Culture & History of Glasgow Cruise Port

People have lived in the area we know as Glasgow for thousands of years. Its central location along the River Clyde provided opportunities for trading throughout its history. Saint Mungo founded the city of Glasgow in the 6th century when many of the city’s churches and major sites underwent original construction. As time passed, Glasgow grew in population and in industries like shipbuilding and textiles. After World War II, the city experienced a decline in economic prosperity, but modern revitalization efforts have breathed new life into it. Today, over half a million people live in Glasgow.

Glasgow Port Facilities & Location

Greenock cruise port is the primary cruise terminal where you’ll disembark. After admiring the beautiful views of the Clyde River, you can take a taxi or train to get into Glasgow, which takes around half an hour. You can hang out in Greenock if you want to stay central to the cruise terminal, but heading into town will yield beautiful natural and mountain views before you explore Glasgow.

Transportation in Glasgow

Bike rentals are popular in Glasgow, and taxis are abundant. There’s also an all-day subway ticket available if you prefer to navigate Glasgow underground. You can book a shore excursion to see multiple sights or take a walking tour of the historic parts of Glasgow on foot.

Shopping Near the Glasgow Cruise Port

There are shops in the Greenock cruise terminal, but you’ll find more boutique and high-end shopping available in historic Glasgow. Many shopping opportunities, artisanal goods, and local vendors are huddled along Buchanan Street at the Buchanan Galleries

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency you’ll use on a Greenock cruise is the sterling pound, also abbreviated as the GBP. Carrying a bit of cash is recommended for smaller purchases, but credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are called “cashpoints” in Scotland. Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it is especially polite when you receive excellent service. Round up the fare when tipping a taxi driver, and leave 10% in restaurants.

Greenock (Glasgow) Cruise Ship Schedule For 2023

George Wyllie’s Thirty-two Spires for Hibernia (1994-96) will feature in the Wyllieum’s inaugural show Courtesy The George Wyllie Estate

A gallery dedicated to George Wyllie, who worked as a customs and excise officer for more than 30 years before becoming an artist, is set to open on 26 April in a new waterfront complex in Greenock, near Glasgow in Scotland.

The new space, known as the Wyllieum, stands alongside Wyllie’s former workplace, Custom House, and is part of a new cruise ship visitor centre called the Ocean Terminal.

Wyllie, who died in 2012 aged 90, is known for works such as Paper Boat (1989), a vast paper vessel that was launched on the River Clyde and toured to the US Another notable work is The Running Clock (1999), located outside Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow.

Wyllie retired in his late 50s, when he decided to pursue a career in art. “The story goes that he stood on the steps of the customs house and declared that now was the time for art,” Will Cooper, the director of the Wyllieum, tells The Art Newspaper . Wyllie later became friends with the German artist Joseph Beuys.

Works shown will be mainly loaned from public and private organisations. “When George died, a large amount of the work was sold via auction, most of it to a single body [the Dunard Fund, a charitable trust founded by the former concert pianist Carol Colburn Grigor] that’s loaning the work to us,” Cooper adds.

“A lot of works are still with the estate, which are also on long-term loan to us. Other organisations, such as the Roberts Institute of Art, will also lend works.” Founded by the collector David Roberts, the institute plans to loan the piece Straw Locomotive (1987), a model of a suspended train engine made of straw.

The £20.1m Ocean Terminal scheme was delivered by Inverclyde Council via funding from the UK and Scottish governments (the Glasgow City Region City Deal provided £10.4m) along with contributions from the port operator Peel Ports (£8m) and the George Wyllie Foundation, which received £1.7m from the Dunard Fund.

“We have a really good fundraising team that have raised a significant amount of money, which will see us operating for the first few years,” Cooper says. “We have a decent deal with the council regarding our rates.

“What’s exciting is that George is a well-known artist, but I’m not sure the greater public have scratched at the surface,” he adds. “We can really dive more deeply into some of his ideas linked to ecological thinking, colonialism and post-colonialism, all subjects that concern artists now. George was doing it nearly 40 years ago.”

The inaugural show, called Spires (25 April-11 August), presents a selection of Wyllie’s eponymous simple sculptural forms, comprising a three-legged base with a vertical pole, held in place by a rock or stone. These stark pieces acted as “anti-monuments”, marking a specific time or place celebrating “wherever they stood”. Wyllie began making the spires in 1982 and, over the following decades, developed the structures for sites across the UK, Europe and the US.

Different aspects of Wyllie’s practice will be presented in two temporary shows annually, which will also feature other artists.

“His sculptures are brilliant, but the works on paper add an extra layer to the way that he thought about stuff,” Cooper says.

So, who will visit? “I think a certain Scottish audience will come and be really surprised and excited to see a new part of his practice that hasn’t really been shown before; this is similar to how we have reappraised other older artists over the last 20 years,” Cooper says.

The next exhibition in the space will be presented in collaboration with Sculpture House, an artist-led hub in neighbouring Paisley. The show, Home-Work (20 September-16 March 2025), will include works by artists including Laura Aldridge, James Rigler and Nick Evans.

New deep-water channel allows first ship to pass Key bridge wreckage in Baltimore

B ALTIMORE (AP) — The first cargo ship passed through a newly opened deep-water channel in Baltimore on Thursday after being stuck in the harbor since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed four weeks ago, halting most maritime traffic through the city’s port.

The Balsa 94, a bulk carrier sailing under a Panama flag, passed through the new 35-foot (12-meter) channel headed for Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Two more commercial ships followed later Thursday, including a vehicle carrier headed to Panama.

Their long-awaited voyages marked an important step in the ongoing cleanup and recovery effort as crews have been working around the clock to clear thousands of tons of mangled steel and concrete from the entrance to Baltimore’s harbor.

Five vessels that have been stranded for weeks are expected to finally leave Baltimore through the new, temporary channel. Other ships are scheduled to enter the port, which normally processes more cars and farm equipment than any other in the country.

Thousands of longshoremen, truckers and small business owners have seen their jobs impacted by the collapse, prompting local and state officials to prioritize reopening the port and restoring its traffic to normal capacity in hopes of easing the economic ripple effects of the collapse. Officials have also established various assistance programs for unemployed workers and others impacted by the closure.

On Thursday morning, the Balsa 94 moved through the channel guided by two tug boats, one in front and one behind. It glided slowly past the fallen bridge and grounded Dali, the massive container ship that caused the collapse when it slammed into one of the bridge’s support columns.

Pieces of the steel span are still blocking other parts of the port’s main channel, which has a controlling depth of 50 feet (15 meters), enough to accommodate some of the largest cargo and cruise ships on the water.

The Balsa 94 is expected to arrive in Canada on Monday.

The Dali lost power and veered off course shortly after leaving the Port of Baltimore bound for Sri Lanka last month.

Six members of a roadwork crew — all Latino immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras — plunged to their deaths in the collapse. Four bodies have been recovered from the underwater wreckage while two remain missing.

A memorial for the victims near the south end of the bridge has grown in recent weeks. It now includes six large wooden crosses decorated with flags from the victims’ home countries and other personal items, including the hardhats and work boots that allowed them to provide for their families and chase the American dream. A painted canvas backdrop displays abstract scenes from the bridge collapse and salvage efforts as well as handwritten notes from the men’s loved ones.

“We want to send a message to the world that we’re here and we care,” said the artist, Roberto Marquez, who was visiting the memorial late Thursday morning. “We will be here working until they are all recovered.”

The new channel will remain open until Monday or Tuesday and then close again until roughly May 10. During the closure, crews will work to remove steel spans from the deck of the Dali and refloat the ship, which will then be guided back into the port, officials said earlier this week.

The port’s main channel is set to reopen next month after the Dali has been removed from the collapse site. That will allow for a normal flow of traffic to resume through the port.

But for now, the 35-foot depth is a substantial increase over the three other temporary channels established in recent weeks. It puts the cleanup effort slightly ahead of schedule, as officials previously said they hoped to open a channel of that depth by the end of April.

A hulking vehicle carrier named Carmen that is nearly as long as the Dali became the third commercial ship to traverse the channel Thursday afternoon. Viewed from the deck of a nearby passenger boat, it appeared to sail steadily between the marker buoys, dwarfing the cranes, barges and other wreckage removal equipment that was stationed nearby.

Even with commercial ships chugging past, crews continued the arduous process of clearing debris from the collapse site. On Thursday, they were using a crane apparatus to smash the fallen roadway into more manageable pieces that could be lifted from underwater with a giant claw.

In a court filing Monday, Baltimore’s mayor and city council called for the Dali’s owner and manager to be held fully liable for the bridge collapse, which they said could be devastating for the regional economy. They said the port , which was established before the nation’s founding, has long been an economic driver for Baltimore and the surrounding area. Losing the bridge itself has also disrupted a major east coast trucking route.

The filing came in response to an earlier petition on behalf of the two companies asking a court to cap their liability under a pre-Civil War provision of an 1851 maritime law — a routine procedure for such cases. A federal court in Maryland will ultimately decide who’s responsible and how much they owe.

In the meantime, both the FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board are conducting probes to determine what caused the ship to lose power and strike the bridge.

Subscriber only, travel | port canaveral chalks up record month amid growing cruise demand.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas arrived to Port Canaveral to home port for the first time on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

Port Canaveral saw just under 800,000 cruise passengers move on and off its ships in March as part of a record year that keeps topping expectations.

That set a one-month record for the port with an average of nearly 25,600 people a day around 93 cruise ship calls. March is traditionally one of the strongest months of the year for the port with its spring break traffic.

It also marked the halfway point of the fiscal year that began in October 2023. Six months in, the port has seen 3.9 million passenger movements from 479 ship calls.

“The industry itself is very, very strong right now,” said Port CEO Capt. John Murray at the port commission meeting on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of expansion plans. The companies are starting to reorder ships again after the pandemic.”

NCL details new dining on Canaveral-bound Norwegian Aqua

That includes more ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, which has been sending its new vessels to Port Canaveral as they debut including next year’s Norwegian Aqua.

“So a lot of great things, a lot of great things, a lot of enthusiasm and I can say that the industry is 110% of what it was prior to the pandemic,” Murray said. “They are back and booming right now. So we’re fortunate to be taking advantage of that here at the port.”

Operating revenue for the year is already at $98 million, which is $3.6 million above budget. It also means the record projection of $187 million in operating revenue through the end of the fiscal year in September is likely to get surpassed as well.

Ship capacity is determined to be at 100% if each stateroom is occupied by two passengers, so ships sailing with families, for instance, will push capacity above 100% and in turn increase revenue for the port from the cruise lines as well as add to an uptick in parking charges.

Royal Caribbean to send massive Utopia of the Seas to Port Canaveral

One of the big drivers has been the addition of a second Oasis-class vessel by Royal Caribbean so that the port hosts two of the largest cruise ships in the world.

Allure of the Seas joined Wonder of the Seas last fall to begin short three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas, and will continue that until the debut of Royal’s new Utopia of the Seas this summer. Since arriving, it has added more than 650,000 passenger movements to the port’s growing tally.

The port has been home port to 13 ships from Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian and MSC Cruises, and is set to welcome its first ships from both Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises this fall.

Port Canaveral plots timeline to take over marina for new cruise terminal

Right now it has six cruise terminals, but is beginning the work to eventually build a seventh later this decade. During an interview earlier in April at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach, Murray said the key to growth for the port will be a shift in how the port gives access to each terminal, such as how it plans to operate its seventh terminal.

“It’s going to be multiuser. It’s not going to be a single-use facility. That’s going to be how our concept of operations would be going forward,” Murray said. “The only way you’re going to get good utilization of a terminal is if you can put multiple brands in there and not have it dedicated to just one user.”

That’s how it runs several of its terminals now including Disney Cruise Line at Cruise Terminal 8 and Carnival Cruise Line at its newest terminal, Cruise Terminal 3.

“If they’ve got seven days a week at one terminal and they’re only using three, maybe four days, that’s not high utilization,” Murray said. “Yet, it’s a facility that we’ve got blocked out that we’re not getting any benefit from it for the investment we’ve made.”

He notes Cruise Terminal 10, which gets used by three brands, gets used six days a week.

Murray said with newer and bigger ships on order from all the major lines, the demand is just going to continue to spike for parking space at Florida’s big three ports.

“I think the point now for all of the major brands is finding somewhere to operate,” Murray said. “Because there’s only Miami, [and] we all know how full Miami is; Everglades, [which has] limited capacity or opportunity for growth; and we have more land, but you know, it’s not all going to get committed to the cruise industry.”

“So the question is, how do we allow more opportunities for the cruise lines to operate? This is one — get high utilization out of the terminal.”
