Self-Guided Food Tour of Rome

diy food tour rome

This is a self-guided food tour of Rome. Pasta, pizza, gelato.... oh my! There's plenty to ingest in the Eternal City, and sometimes it's hard to decide where to spend each precious mealtime.

Discover some of Rome's best eats, Rome's best gelato, and Rome's best wine. The walk itself takes a little over an hour—perfect time to walk off some of those carbs.

The longest leg of the tour takes you to the last stop, gelato.

If you find yourself too stuffed to go on, try checking out a food tour of Rome. Tour guides will offer you manageable plenty of good advice for where to eat after your tour.

Volpetti – Best Cheese in Rome

In Rome, Cheese is everywhere. You can't walk two feet without stumbling over some great pecorino, parmesan or burrata—soft mozzarella.

One of the best places in Rome to sample cheeses is Volpetti.

diy food tour rome

This salumeria has been open for over 40 years and has been run by the Volpetti family, starting with brothers Emilio and Claudio before being passed down to Alessandro.

You could lose hours in this shop, so ask the staff what's good that day. They also have a large selection of meats and balsamic vinegars—the perfect accompaniment to any Italian cheese.

Da Felice a Testaccio – Best Cacio e Pepe in Rome

One of Rome's most famous dishes, cacio e pepe, is also one of its most simple ones.

Simply translated into cheese and pepper, long strands of bucatini or spaghetti are doused in piles of shaved cheese and generously sprinkled with pepper.

diy food tour rome

Opened in 1936, Da Felice a Testaccio has an old-world feel. The floors are covered in black-and-white tiles, and the walls are made of exposed brick.

The restaurant has gotten some press over the past decade, so prices have increased due to popular demand. The quality and intimate space have mostly stayed the same.

Da Remo – Best Pizza in Rome

One of the must-eats in Rome includes pizza, which is good because there's plenty of it.

You'll find a large array of pizza in the city, from old-world style to grandma style to hyped-up fancy pies. Da Remo is one of the best old-world pizzerias in Rome.

diy food tour rome

The crust is thin and chewy with a little char around the edges. The dough is topped with a thin layer of sauce and rustic slices of mozzarella. You can get thin slices of salami on top or shaved mushrooms and sausage.

Head across the Tiber to the Trastevere, a trendy neighborhood that's famous for its restaurants, art, and fashion.

I Supplì - Best Suppli in Rome

When in Sicily, eat arancini; when in Rome, devour as many suppli as you can get your paws on. Suppli is the cousin to arancini, little balls of fried risotto and cheese.

diy food tour rome

Suppli gets its name because it’s a suped-up version of arancini. Just kidding. But no, really. They usually add yumminess like tomato sauce to these little fried treats. Gooey mozzarella oozes out of the center.

This place was opened by former stock brokers, who left their high-powered jobs in search of a more humble existence—and never looked back.

La Norcineria Lacozzilli – Best Porchetta in Rome

Three generations of Romans work side-by-side at this popular spot to grab a porchetta sandwich.

This crumbly, tender, juicy pork can be eaten atop a soft bun or devoured on a white pizza. If you're a purist, order a few slices to nosh on your way to your next slice of pizza.

Ai Marmi - Best Roman-Style Pizza in Rome

Okay, okay, so you can't just have one best pizza in Rome. Ai Marmi offers rustic pizzas with traditional ingredients.

Here, try the sausage and zucchini blossom pizza that will set you back a whopping €8. If you're feeling a need for a veggie, you can get a cheese pizza topped with greens here, too.

Eat out on the street, so you can people watch as you devour your second pizza of the day.

Cross back over the Tiber to the Jewish Quarter.

Giggetto al Portico D’Ottavia - Best Fried Artichoke in Rome

Italians are lauded for a variety of foods; pasta, seafood, and desserts especially to come to mind. Two foods the Romans know best are artichokes and fried foods. Why not have the best of both worlds?

The Jewish quarter churns out some of the best food in the city, and they've perfected the fried artichoke at Giggetto al Portico D'Ottavia.

Not a lot of travellers know the origins of their favorite Roman foods and that a lot of it comes from Jewish cuisine.

diy food tour rome

This Jewish eatery has been open since 1923 and is famous for more than its artichoke. Their carbonara (another Roman favorite!) is favored by both tourists and locals.

Yet it is the fried artichoke that shines here. Both smooth and crunchy at the same time, fried artichokes go great with a Peroni or glass of Pinot grigio.

ZUM Roma - Best Tiramisu in Rome

In Rome, do don't eat just one dessert. That's why we're encouraging you to eat a few on this tour. If you want to try some of Rome's best tiramisu (layered cream, Gentilini biscuits, and chocolate), head 10 minutes northwest.

diy food tour rome

Tiramisu comes in an array of flavors here, including berry, pistachio, and rum. The Gentilini biscuits are a little bit of a detour from the traditional lady fingers, but the results are magical.

Il Piccolo - Best Wine Bar in Rome

Four minutes north of ZUM is our first wine stop. It probably goes without saying that you can't take a trip to Rome without enjoying some wine.

This place makes our list because you can taste some really fantastic Italian wines here—and it has an old-world, of-the-beaten-path feel to it.

One lone café table sits outside if you're the people-watching type. Inside, the tasting room is covered in wine bottles and is dotted with a few simple wooden tables.

The wines by the glass menu is small, but you can buy any of the bottles on the wall to share with a friend (or keep all to yourself).

Canova Tadolini - Best Coffee in Rome

If you're in a carb coma by now, you can duck out. But if you've been saving room for (more) dessert, head north to the Spanish Steps. There's some great coffee and people watching up there.

diy food tour rome

Café Canova is the quintessential Italian café. Umbrellaed tables line the streets. The inside is a menagerie of statues, busts, and paintings. Gold velour couches offer the perfect place to visit with friends or nurse an espresso alone.

For Rome's best gelato, you'll need to head across the Tiber.

Gelateria dei Gracchi - Best Gelato in Rome

This intimate shop serves up some of Rome's best gelato. All flavors are made with fresh ingredients, which means there's plenty of seasonal flavors.

We recommend trying the ricotta and the pistachio. Even Anthony Bourdain found this place to be one of the best in Rome and featured it on his show, "The Layover".

diy food tour rome

Smooth and creamy, this gelato is so good, you'll want to order two: One for now and another for the road.

Tracking down some of the best food in Rome isn't easy. You can find even more good eats on a Rome food tour.

Most guides can give you the scoop on these stops and recommend a few of their own. Check out our favorite Rome food tours here.

Rome in a Day: Ultimate Self-Guided Walking Tour of Rome

Rome is a city with thousands of years of history, all layered together and visible in its stunning monuments, buildings and neighborhoods. The historic center in particular is full of things to do and see, and luckily they’re all within walking distance of one another. And even if you’ve only got one free day to explore the Italian capital, we’ve got you covered. This self-guided walking tour of Rome will help you hit all the main monuments and areas in just a few hours.

Colosseum in Rome

Of course, we think this city merits at least a few days of exploring. But in case you’re short on time, we’ve rounded up the top spots you simply can’t miss.

On this self-guided walking tour of Rome, we’re taking you from the Colosseum to the Vatican, with many stops in between. But feel free to spend as much time as you’d like at each place, and adapt it to fit with any other tours you might have scheduled.

Follow this route for the ultimate self-guided walking tour of Rome.

8 Essential Stops on a Self-Guided Walking Tour of Rome

Colosseum and roman forum.

Let’s start our day with one of Rome’s oldest monuments, the Colosseum . Even if you don’t have time to go inside, the park around the monument gives you a good look at the exterior. If you walk down the road a bit, you’ll be able to look down into the Roman Forum at the ruins as well.

Piazza Venezia

Your next stop is the central hub of Rome, Piazza Venezia, where you’ll find the Vittorio Emanuele II monument—or as the Romans affectionately call it, “the wedding cake.” This multi-level, white marble monument was built to commemorate the unification of Italy under the reign of its first king, Vittorio Emanuele II.

Trevi Fountain

Not far from Piazza Venezia is one of the most popular sites in Rome, the Fontana di Trevi . Wandering along a small side street, you’ll hear the fountain before you see it. This stunning masterpiece is a must-see for any first-time visitors to Rome. Due to the popular tradition of throwing coins in the fountain, it earns about €3,000 a day to be given to the charity Caritas .

Insider’s tip: It’s best to visit as early (or late) as possible in the day to avoid the crowds. Think 5 or 6 a.m.!

Spanish Steps

From the Trevi Fountain, you’ll make your way to the Spanish Steps next (detour to Piazza Barberini if you’d like to see another of Bernini’s fountains along the way, the Fontana del Tritone ). Because recent restrictions prohibit any sitting or eating on the steps themselves, hold off until our next stop. In the meantime, you can take photos, grab a drink at the rooftop terrace above the steps, or do some shopping at the designer stores in the square.

This iconic building is next on your self-guided walking tour of Rome. You may know that the Roman Pantheon is famous for being the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. But did you know that the building burned down twice?? Or that painter Raphael’s fiancée is buried here? Before gazing up at that awe-inspiring ceiling, make sure to brush up on some little-known facts about the Pantheon !

And of course, we have plenty of recommendations for where to eat near the Pantheon. After you’ve admired the only source of light, a 7.8-meter oculus in the center of the dome, head outside to enjoy a refreshing gelato.

Insider’s tip: If you visit on a rainy day, you can see the raindrops falling inside the Pantheon.

Piazza Navona

A short walk from the Pantheon will bring you to Piazza Navona . Just like the Circus Maximus, this square was originally used for chariot racing and other events in Ancient Roman times, before being built over in later eras. In the center is yet another of Bernini’s fountains, the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi , which has inspired people with its beauty for centuries.

Remember, it’s best to skip dining at any restaurants in this area (most of which will be overpriced). But if you do want to sit and enjoy the view, grab a cappuccino or glass of wine at one of the many bars nearby.

St. Peter’s and the Vatican

Depending on what time of year you’re visiting, the Vatican can easily take up an entire morning or afternoon. Be prepared for long lines (even if you buy a ticket ahead of time). You’ll want to dedicate at least a couple of hours if you do decide to venture into the Vatican Museums or the basilica. From the outside, however, you can see the entire square of St. Peter’s and enjoy the exterior architecture and sculptures.

And, if you offer a coin to the Trevi Fountain, you’ll be more likely to return to Rome. I left in 92, didn’t do the coin thing as I’d hoped to be back in 2 weeks (half my vacation), I never returned. When you’ve spent a few days in Rome, you’ll understand. A word to the wise.

Very wise words, Mary!

If you have done one, are they worth it? Furthermore, wondering if anyone has done their own food tour?

' class=

You could absolutely do your own tour; with some research and planning, you could do a theme such as best gelato, or pizza, or whatever. You could also read the itineraries of guided tours to see if you can follow their path - some will tell you names of restaurants, others won't.

diy food tour rome

Another DIY Food Tour to consider is a bakery tour, as you'll find great sweets, fabulous breads, great sandwiches and pizza for lunch, pizza, tortes, etc.

You can certainly do it on your own but you, obviously, won't be given the samples of various food items in the shops, markets, etc that you usually get on a food tour

The guide came into the small shop (the tour group stayed outside of it the entire time) was given two small plates of cubed cheeses (which the guide had to come back in and ask what the cheeses were) to take out to a group of about 15 people - They were still standing outside of it over 10 minutes later the I left - not sure why -

I've never been on a food tour but if I were to go on one, I would want one that was limited to a small group and one where you did go inside of the places and have various things explained vs. a guide going in and coming out with food samples and a long rap -

I think there is a big difference in quality of such tours so if you choose to go, I'd suggest reading reviews very carefully for details.

Most times when I am buying cheeses and meats (salami, mortadella, etc) I will be offered a small sample but it's not something I expect, ask for or count on but it just will usually happen.

Whether it’s your first or fiftieth time in the city, I feel like you’d be missing out by not taking this experience! I’d been to Rome before this, but after taking this tour I realized just how much I’d been missing out on  real  Italian cuisine!

I was going to all the “best-rated” Italian places in the area, but they were all the typical touristy spots that charge you an arm and a leg for dishes that taste pretty similar to what I could get at the Olive Garden.

With this guided food tour, we met up with our guide near the Cipra metro station where we were able to explore the area and sample over 20 different foods!

Expand To See More See Less

At La Nicchia Cafe, we were able to try the Mozzarella di Bufala campana, tons of tasty prosecco, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, balsamic, and so much more!

My personal favorite was the Ricotta with white truffle-infused honey which was creamy, sweet, and savory.

Bonci Pizzarium is owned by the “Michelangelo of Pizza”, and was recommended by countless food icons, including the legendary Anthony Bourdain!

With nearly 100 different combinations, you’ll get to try pizzas you haven’t even thought of before! La Tradizione is the place to go for cheeses and cured meats paired with amazing fine wines, and Il Segreto near the Vatican provides on-point, al dente pasta with even more wine!

  • Departure: Piazza S. Bartolomeo All’Isola, 22, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 4:00 PM
  • Includes:  13 samples at 7 different tasting locations, Wine, beer and water, Local English-speaking guide, Rome – A food lover’s guide

This next tour is actually the first tour of Trastevere, and with their expertise and vast knowledge, it’s obvious they have over a decade of experience under their belt.

The Rome Twilight Trastevere Food Tour with Eating Europe  is more focused on quality over quantity, so you won’t get to try as many different types of foods.

However, the ones you  do  try are made to be savored and not rushed, and are well worth the time spent enjoying and learning about.

Trastevere is a lively neighborhood known for its nightlife, beautiful architecture, and is also one of the best “foodie” neighborhoods in Rome. However, with this tour you’ll be receiving VIP access to some of the area’s trendiest, most well-reputed food institutions.

Start off the tour by meeting up with your guide and learn some insider tips into the best types of dishes found in this area and what to look out for.

We met up at the Isola Tiberina, where we walked together with our guide and the rest of our group across the Ponte Cestio, crossing the river to Trastevere.

The first stop of the day was at Via dei Vascellari, where we kicked things off with a toast with DOC prosecco and plenty of traditional Roman dishes at Da Enzo al 29. It’s been serving Romans for nearly 100 years and is by far the most well-known trattoria in the entire city.

I loved trying delicious homemade cookies at the famous Via della Luce, followed by the amazing roast pork and beer at the Via Natale del Grande.

The supplí was phenomenal, along with the various pasta dishes and gelato after exploring the area. We even learned how gourmet gelato came to Roma, and the differences between “real” and “fake” gelato!

3. the award-winning private food tour of rome: 6 or 10 tastings.

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Departure Time: Between 12:00 to 7:00 PM
  • Includes:  Private Personalized Tour, local guide, 6 or 10 food & drinks tastings of high-quality local products – depends on option booked, vegetarian alternatives available, only you and your guide, carbon neutral tour organized by a B-Corp certified company

I find that this tour works well for anyone, no matter your age, background, or knowledge of Roman dishes. The Award-Winning Private Food Tour of Rome: 6 or 10 Tastings  is perfect for first-time visitors who are not only interested in the food scene, but Rome’s history.

If you’d like to learn about local culture more in-depth than what most Rome tours offer, you’re in the right place. I really like the fact that even though it isn’t a particularly lengthy tour, they even come and pick you up from your hotel.

This is a huge weight off my shoulders, especially when I’m traveling in a foreign country and don’t know how to get around very well, yet. This casual strolling tour perfectly showed off authentic Roman culture, providing me with a perspective I hadn’t seen of this city before.

I’ve always felt like food is a very personal thing, so it made sense to take a private culinary tour with a local foodie who took us to various stops to sample dishes.

We met our guide at Campo de’ Fiori where we started things off with a quick tour of the square, which was exemplary of Rome’s outdoor market traditions.

We then headed to Ponte Sisto, which crosses over the river Tiber and offers beautiful views of the city on the way to Trastevere.

Once in Trastevere – one of the biggest foodie neighborhoods in Rome – we went through and tried some classics like buffalo mozzarella and gelato. After that, we checked out Palazzo Farnese, where we learned about and tried various dishes and drinks.

After all that, we all laughed and chatted while making our way to the Chiesa di Santa Margherita Catholic church, admiring the beautiful 12th-century mosaics and opulent interior.

4. Small-Group Rome Food Tour: Trastevere Campo Fiori Jewish Ghetto

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Departure: Via Dei Baullari, 106, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM, 5:00 PM
  • Includes:  Morning & Evening: 15 samples in 5 locations with with pasta & local fried (VIP restaurant entrance), 3 quality wine tastings at different spots, English-speaking local guide, best restaurants guidebook & cookbook for free, Campo de Fiori Market tour in morning departure

How does a small-group setting while venturing through the best architecture, food, and culture Rome has to offer sound?

You’ll get to experience all that and more with the Small-Group Rome Food Tour: Trastevere Campo Fiori Jewish Ghetto ! I find this tour to be the perfect date-night activity and a great alternative to going out to a nice restaurant!

The tour clocks in at around 4 hours, but I appreciate that they offer both morning and afternoon tour start times to make it easier to fit into busy schedules. Regardless of the start time you choose, though, I highly recommend arriving very hungry as you’ll be trying a lot!

However, I’d even be willing to recommend this selection if you or someone else in your party is a big history buff, as our guide covered a lot.

We started things off in Piazza Farnese, where we met with our guide and headed towards the first stop in Campo de’ Fiori which is known for its legendary outdoor food market.

This is the best place to get fresh vegetables, meats, and cheeses. We were able to purchase items (if we wanted), meet some vendors, try samples of various foods, and soak in the culture of doing “grocery shopping” here.

We then arrived in Trastevere, which is incredibly charming thanks to its cobblestone streets, beautiful homes, and some of the most delectable restaurants and cafes in the world.

Our guide led the way through some of the most well-kept secrets that I’d probably never have tried, otherwise.

Getting to see the Jewish Quarter was enriching, learning about the unique history of this neighborhood while trying delicacies like supplí, fried artichokes, codfish, and much more.

5. Food & Wine Tour by the Vatican City

  • Departure: La Nicchia Cafe, Via Cipro, 4L, 00136 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: Between 4:30 to 7:30 PM
  • Includes:  Food tasting, Wine tasting, Snacks, Bottled water, Alcoholic Beverages

I’ll admit that food isn’t one of the first things that come to mind when I think of Vatican City. However, I was surprised that the surrounding neighborhoods of Prati and Trionfale are filled with amazing wine and cuisine selections.

The Food & Wine Tour by the Vatican City  is perfect for any age, background, and food preference – even offering substitutions for just about any allergies and food restrictions!

If you’re already planning on going to see the Vatican Museums, this culinary tour is a must-do! We started our tour by meeting our guide at La Nicchia Cafe, which is known for whipping up some of the finest Roman dishes and drinks!

We definitely started things off right, with a 30-year aged balsamic vinegar drizzled over Parmigiano Reggiano, along with truffles, buffalo mozzarella, and DOCG Frascati superior wine.

By this point, I trusted my guide to take me pretty much anywhere, displaying her vast knowledge on all things “Rome” and “Roman food”, along with being fun and very personable.

Our next stop was the Ristorante Pizzeria Falcone, where we were able to try typical Roman pizza (not shy of any kind of sauces, veggies, proteins, cheeses, etc.). I was very intrigued at just how different it was from Neopolitan pizza, but I was very much a fan!

After this, we went to Bonci Pizzarium, which is known as Rome’s #1 pizza and offers a massive selection of different types of – you guessed it: pizza.

Our last stop of the day was at the Hostaria Dino e Tony, where we reveled in handmade pasta dishes and tiramisu, washed down by some of the most delicious wine I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying.

Overall, this was an amazing tour right from the very beginning, with plenty of fun stories to keep us engaged throughout!

6. The Roman Food Tour including Visit to the Trionfale Food Market

  • Departure:  Via Cipro, 4L, 00136 Roma RM, Italy
  • Departure Time: 10:45 AM
  • Includes:  Food tasting, wine tasting, tour escort/host

If I were just in Rome for 1 day and I wanted to try as many Roman dishes as possible, I’d probably take this next tour. The Roman Food Tour including Visit to the Trionfale Food Market is the perfect balance between entertainment, history, architecture, and of course, food.

We were able to try nearly 20 different types of dishes, and while that may sound like a ton of food, was digested quite easily thanks to us strolling around in between each stop!

Our tour started off in the morning, which was quite a bit different from any of the other food tours in Rome that I’d taken! This made it easier to schedule into a busy itinerary, as people seem to always have plans in the evening over morning.

It made sense then that after meeting our guide at Venue La Nicchia Cafe, we started things off by trying a typical Roman breakfast!

I briefly explained La Nicchia Cafe up above, but this is the place to go if you’re interested in tasting aged balsamic, truffles, Genovese pesto, buffalo mozzarella, and some of the finest wine.

After this, we strolled on over to the Bonci Pizzarium, which is listed at the number one pizzeria in Rome – which is really saying something if you know about Romans’ passion for pizza!

At Bonci Pizzarium, you’ll see and get to sample pizzas you literally won’t see anywhere else in the world! After this, head to the Mercato Trionfale and learn about this local market and how everything operates.

Al Giardino Del Gatto e La Volpe Srl is one of the most well-respected, family-owned restaurants known for homemade pasta with fine wine (and they definitely delivered!). To follow all those “salty” dishes up, what better way to celebrate a great day than with some artisanal gelato?!

7. Rome Walking Food Tour With Secret Food Tours

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: Piazza Navona, 14, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 10:30 or 11:30 AM
  • Includes:  3 types of homemade pizza, fried risotto balls (supplí), Italian cheeses, cannoli, artisanal gelato, 2 types of Roman pastas, the Secret Dish, espresso/cappuccino, finest Italian wines, water, non-alcoholic drinks

Last but certainly not least, I bring you the shortest tour of its kind! The Rome Walking Food Tour with Secret Food Tours was simply a blast, and while it only lasts 2.4 hours, really packs a punch!

It’s a fantastic way to get to try true Roman fare while venturing through the city’s most unique districts, complete with breathtaking architecture, rich culture, and friendly locals.

While this tour doesn’t include a complimentary hotel pickup, our meetup point at Campo de’ Fiori next to Piazza Navona in Rome was very conveniently located. We then asked our guide some questions, got acquainted, and set off to the Jewish ghetto established in 1555.

Learning about the Roman/Jewish ghetto was quite striking, though it was surprisingly established in 555 in Rione Sant’Angelo.

We got to see so many unique and hidden places in Rome, thanks to our expert guide leading the way. She did so in a way that made me trust her, and her energy and passion for Rome were contagious and set a great mood for the entire group.

You can opt to take a small tour or a private tour, and with the private tour, you get a ton of input into your preferences and receive a more customized experience.

Our foodie guide led us through Trastevere, the Jewish Ghetto, and Campo de’ Fiori, which surprisingly all had very different vibes and food dishes. We tried fresh pizzas and pastas, cold meats, tons of cheese, and supplí which I can’t get enough of.

To follow it up, we had a little “dessert” of a tasty cappuccino and creamy gelato! If you want to learn more about Rome’s multilayered history, make sure to add this tour to your list!

3 Do’s and Don’ts for the Best Food Tour in Rome

3 Do’s and Don’ts for the Best Food Tour in Rome

A food tour in Rome is the perfect way to find the best places to eat in Rome. You learn about the food, you’ll taste the best that Italy and Rome have to offer and you stuff your face with the most mouthwatering treats you’ll ever find. But by joining a food tour in Rome, you’ll run a serious risk.

The risk to eat too much. Or go into an instant food coma. Not the end of the world but you don’t want to be that person who can’t eat their gelato at the end of the tour because you’re too stuffed. So here are 3 things you should do on a Roman food tour and 3 things you shouldn’t do on a Rome food tour.

I was invited by the Roman Food Tour to join their tours and test them out. As always, all experiences and opinions are my own and I ate all the food myself 🙂

Food tour in Rome

Before I start with the do’s and don’ts for a food tour in Rome, I break down a little bit what to expect when you book a Rome food tour.

There are many food tours out there, who serve the best food in Rome. I had the best experiences with the “ Roman Food Tour ”. They invited me to join their tour of the Prati neighborhood (near the Vatican) and the Trastevere area in Rome. Both tours offered us an abundance of food.

Halfway through the food tour, I could barely walk because I already ate way too much. I thought to myself: “This can’t be good. What did I do wrong? What should I have done instead? I want to make it to gelato in the end!”

Rome Food Tour

In Rome, there is an overkill of (bad) Italian restaurants. Most of them serve tourist menus and offer tourist prices and low service. To have the best foodie experience in Rome, you must find the best place to eat in Italy’s capital.

Luckily for you, you don’t have to spend hours and hours online, combing through the interwebs to find the best restaurant near Vatican City or the best pizza in Rome. Just join one of the amazing food tours from The Roman Food Tour! They have done all the hard work for you and offer the best in Rome.

The tour is led by locals who have selected the best places to eat in Rome. They take you with them, have a table ready for you and serve you the best food that Rome and Italy have to offer. So all you have to do is show up, eat, drink and be merry. Who doesn’t want that?

Things you shouldn’t do on a Rome food tour

So, you’re going to Rome and you’d like to join a food tour. But you want to make it to the end of the tour and leave enough room for the gelato at the end? Here are some things you shouldn’t do on a food tour:

Don’t starve yourself on the day of the food tour

The Prati Food tour started at sunset and promised us a lot of food. And they were not wrong. I thought it was a smart idea not to eat too much during the day. I was busy exploring the ancient Roman harbor town of Ostia Antica and ‘forgot’ to eat. and leave some room for all the foods on the tour.

Logic thinking, right?

Don’t starve yourself all day before the food tour. Have a light lunch around 1-ish and maybe a gelato at 3 or 4. This way, you’re not absolutely famished before the tour even starts!

When you’re hungry, you’re tempted to start eating as soon as someone puts food in front of you. During the food tour, you’ll visit various places in Rome that each has their own specialty. So always remember: There is more to come!

Taste the best food adventure with a food tour in Rome. How to leave room for gelato? Read this survival guide with do's and don't for your Rome food tour.

Don’t drink too much during the tour

I know I know; we all need to drink at least 2 liters of (non-alcoholic) fluids a day. But where there is water, there cannot be food. Drinking water is a great diet trick to feel full because it actually works. But in case of the food tour, you don’t want to fill yourself up with plain water when there is plenty of delicious wines and food to savor.

On the Trastevere food tour, we tasted some amazing wines. The Italians have a ranking system of normal table wine, IGT wine and the prime wines of DOC and even DOCG . These letters all stand for the standard of checks and controls the wine farmers have to go through. That way, they ensure an excellent quality of wine for you to drink.

During the tour, we tasted 2 DOCG wines which are at the very top of the scale. You don’t want to fill up with water if you can have food and wine instead!

Don’t stuff your face with too much pizza

Mmmhhh pizza! Pizza is never a bad thing. Pizza is good. On the food tour in Rome, you must have pizza! Pizza is your lifeline when exploring Rome. It is your go-to snack when you’re hungry. It is your main food when you travel on a budget and pizza can be of Michelin star quality.

On the food tour in Prati, we visited the famous Bonci pizza place. This shack in the wall had a line with people waiting for halfway around the block. It was featured on CNN traveler and Anthony Bourdain made a big feature about it on one of his shows. They offer the most insane combinations of pizza toppings for you to taste.

Bonci Pizza Rome

During the tour, we visited Bonci pizza. Raluca, our tour guide, ordered 6 or 7 different pizza slices (in Italy they are rectangular) and they were cut up into little pieces. We had a tasting feast of epic proportions. The pizza in our middle, we first took a piece of each flavor to taste.

Then I narrowed things down to my top 3 favorites and had another slice of those. But I changed my mind and made the other 3 my favorites and had to taste them again. Then there were only a few slices left, so I sacrificed myself to eat some more. And then some more.

Once all the pizza was devoured and the “mmmhhh” and the “OMG this is soooo delicious” cries had silenced, I realized this was only our 3 rd stop. We still had 2 more stops to go and I was already on the verge of exploding. I stuffed my face with delicious pizza and could hardly eat anything else. Whoops!

What you should do on a food tour in Rome

It is easy to say the things you shouldn’t do during your food tour, but what should you do? It is hard to say ‘NO’ to so many delicious foods so here are some tips to help with that.

Eat small bites at the food tour

Even if you’re hungry and the food is the best you’ve ever eaten in your whole life, make sure to eat small bites. Chew thoroughly to help digest. This was so hard! On the Trastevere food tour, the first stop was at Trapizzino’s. Here we had suppli’s and trapizzino’s.

Suppli in Rome

A suppli is a fried ball stuffed with risotto rice and cheese inside.

Did anyone say cheese?

When done right, these balls taste like heaven with a little devilish crust around it. One ball is quite big and because it is some sort of finger food, you’re easily tempted to put the whole suppli in your mouth and swallow it.

Don’t do that!

Take small bites and slowly savor the silky rice grains and crunchy exterior.

Trapizzino Trastevere

The signature food of the place called Trapizzino in the Trastevere area in Rome, this was another “stuff your face quickly” type of food. A trapizzino is a mixture of the triangular café’s sandwich (called a tramezzino) and a pizza.

Wait, what?!

Pizza in the shape of a triangular sandwich? Stuffed to the brim with yummy goodness? Oozing out at the edges?

You’re easily tempted to stuff the trapizzino in your face as quickly as possible (head tilted) but don’t do it. Try to take small bites. This way, you get more time to experience the different layers of this amazing snack food but also prevent getting too full, too quickly.

Listen to the explanation from your food guide

When the waiter puts a plate in front of you and pours your glass of wine, most people take some Instagram pictures, propose a toast and then dig in. Depending on how hungry I am, I might skip the first 2 and cut straight to the eating part.

There is no explanation and usually, you just take what appeals the most. On the food tour in Rome, we had a sit-down tasting experience. We sampled different kinds of regional cheeses and cured meats. Only a small slice of Italian heaven, each individual piece of cheese and ham came with a nice story about their origin and what flavors to expect. A great way to pace yourself!

Do listen to the explanations from your tour guide. They have a ton of information to share about the aging process, where the ingredients are sourced and the different quality controls. Listen while you taste. Have a sip of wine and pace yourself! This way, you’ll not fill up too quickly and you learn a lot!

My absolutely favorite taste during our Roman specialty tasting at the Prati food tour was the 3 milk’s cheese. A mixture of goat’s cheese, regular cow’s cheese, and sheep milk. The Robiola cheese is soft, smooth and does packs quite a (goaty) punch. If it wasn’t for our tour guide, I would have never realized where all those different flavors come from.

Wear comfortable (aka stretch) pants for your food tour in Rome

The ultimate tip to be comfortable during your food tour in Rome: wear stretch pants! I love stretch pants. They are comfortable, they come in fashionable designs and they stretch! It is like they were made to wear on a food tour!

After we had suppli’s, trapizzino’s, pizza, a whole range of cheeses and cured meats, it was time to sit down for a proper dinner on our Trastevere Food Tour. We started with an amazing risotto with buffalo mozzarella. It was so smooth and silky, but with little crunchy almond flakes on it, I almost licked the plate.

By now, my tummy was expanding beyond normal proportions and I was very happy to wear my stretch pants!

Gelato at the Rome Food Tour

A food tour in Rome is always a good idea. Whether it is in the Prati district to eat where the locals eat, or in the hip and vibrant Trastevere neighborhood. When you book a food tour in Rome you’ll be guaranteed food aplenty.

It is a given you’ll be stuffed at the end of the night. I hope with my do’s and don’ts you’ll be able to make it to the end and still have some room left for delicious gelato!

Would you choose tobacco flavored ice cream? Or would you go for a mixture of peaches in wine? Or the all-time favorite: vanilla? It doesn’t matter if you’re staying 2 days in Rome or a whole week, you always want to make sure to have a little room left for gelato!

Prati Food Tour Rome

I was lucky enough to do 2 food tours in Rome with the Roman Food Tour company. One, of the Prati district, near the Vatican. It is easily accessible by metro and it offers a real insight in where the local Romans go for pizza and dinner. It has some world-class restaurants that offer the best food.

Raluca guided us around this unknown area. We visited a deli shop, had a Roman delicacy tasting, got a taste of the finest of Italian food and stuffed our faces with pizza at Bonci. After that, we were treated to an amazing homemade pasta and finished the night with gelato.

I was sooo stuffed. I contemplated to skip gelato (but I didn’t, because hello?! GELATO!). The Prati Food Tour had me taste surprising combinations in cheese, wine, and pizza. I absolutely recommend to tour Prati and discover her food and see where the Roman’s eat. It doesn’t get more laid back and off the beaten path in the center of Rome than this!

Trastevere Food Tour Rome

Another option would be the Trastevere food tour. Trastevere is the hip and vibrant neighborhood of Rome. Buzzing 7 nights a week, it can be hard to find a table. Alina guided us through the Trastevere neighborhood, stopping at the best places for snacks and pizza. We first had amazing suppli’s and trapizzino’s. I found the combinations absolutely amazing and I wanted to come back and try them all!

After the first bites, we moved on to Pizzarium where we sampled some tasteful combinations of pizza. We then slowed down a bit, with a sit-down delicacy sampling with wine pairing. The combinations of chocolate and cheese were especially surprising.

After all this gourmet food, it was time for a little stroll around Trastevere. I loved how our guide was not only knowledgeable about food but also about the history of Trastevere. After we were able to walk off some of the food, we settled ourselves at an all-organic restaurant. The restaurant has a farm south of Rome where they grow and raise all their food themselves!

It was a great opportunity to drink more wine and chat with the other guests on the tour. I love how you make new friends on a food tour like this! At the end of the night, we stumbled into the cutest gelato shop that had some amazing combinations of ice cream.

Hi Marilyn, I’m sure there are. I suggest you contact one of the companies I recommend and I’m sure they are more than happy to help you out and see what they can do for you. The morning tour includes a visit to the local Campo dei Fiori market, and the evening tour focus more on a relaxed visit of Rome by night. Apart from this, it is the same as the morning tour.

The foods and stops may have some variations during the different seasons, but do not worry, no matter the season, you will always end the tour happy and full. If you want more alcohol (and who doesn't?) We offer a upgraded drinks package that gives you 3 drinks.

You can find the meeting spot here and if it's not clear you can always contact us.

Please note that we are not able to offer any gluten-free or vegan option yet. Please inform us in advance of any other food allergies or special dietary requirements in order to give us time to adapt the menu and make you enjoy the tour! If you have any doubt or concerns, feel free to email us at [email protected] before booking.

Children are more than welcome to our tour and it's free for any child 2 years or under, but their presence MUST BE NOTIFIED UPON BOOKING OF THE TOUR at [email protected] ! We have had many families attend from all over the world and everyone enjoyed the tour.

This is not a problem. Just inform our guide before the tour starts. During the tasting you can select another beverage you like!

We give enough food to all our customers. Trust us, you will not need to go to any restaurant after the food tour!

Vocuher

Our tours are often sold out very quickly. If the date you requested is not available, please do not hesitate to email us and we can see if there is anything we can do. We cannot promise but we will try our best to sort something out for you.

To join our food tour, you must wear comfortable shoes. There will be around 1 hour walking but it is not too difficult. If you walk slowly, then our guide will walk slowly as well.

We take 12 people max. If you are more than 12 people, please do not hesitate to email us and will try to see if we can accommodate.

You do not have to print your voucher. A confirmation on your phone will be fine!

All of our vouchers expire one year from the date of purchase.

However we do reserve the right to cancel the tour if we feel the weather is extreme, and we cannot run the tour due to this for more info see our Terms and Conditions: https://www.secretfoodtours.com/terms-and-conditions/

You must book directly on our website. We do not accept cash payments. Our online payment is safe, secured and SSL protected.

The booking fee that you have to pay is up to our ticket provider and we can't change it. All our clients need to pay for it upon booking. The booking fee charged contributes to the cost of the ticketing system to provide an excellent service to our customers.

A few banks have charged their customer an extra fee while booking with us (this isn't the booking fee but another fee added by the bank). We think this is unfair, if this happens let us know by showing us in your bank statement and we will refund this fee as a gesture of good will.

Private tours

If you are coming to Rome with your entourage and you’d like to take a private tour just for you and your group – we can make that happen!

Our guide was amazing, Best thing we did in Rome, and yes, we visited the Colosseum and Vatican. We did it on our first night and the information we learned helped us order food for the rest of our trip. - Kevin Ruth
Toni was the perfect host! We learnt so much about the area, ate delicious food and had the most wonderful time walking the beautiful streets of Trastevere. Highly recommend this tour especially if you’re staying in the neighbourhood. Make sure you ask for Toni. - Les Widmark
Toni was fantastic. She gave us so much information, made the walk around Trastevere fun. The food was really great but also the history behind the food and the buildings and area was really interesting and fun. We ( all four of us girls) enjoyed every minute. - Cyndi Connolly
We had a wonderful experience with Dario. The locations were all very special and the food and wine was great. I would recommend the tour without hesitation. Thank you for the experience! - Linda Ducousso
The venues were excellent, the food fantastic, but of course nothing would be the same without the outstanding tour guide Luca. His tone, information, history referrals and stories behind made this tour complete. I have been in Rome many times but first time at night in Trastevere. I Will Recommend my friends and clients to enjoy. - Cessy Meacham
Valentina was absolutely AMAZING! The food was incredible, as was the history lesson throughout Trastevere. Our family of five, including a very picky teenage eater, enjoyed every stop along the tour. Our favorite stops were different from one another, showing the wide array of food. We even discovered a new favorite wine! We would highly recommend this tour and especially Valentina! - Matthew Ferlito
Excellent tour, well worth the money! This made my trip to Rome go from amazing to a special experience of a lifetime. Cobbled Italian residential authentic streets of Rome with authentic as well as modern food! The experience made it! - Karina Devlin
Our whole family loved the food, drink, and friendly neighbourhood feel that Rish created in this tour. From the very start everyone felt comfortable and Rish’s insights and humour kept us engaged and eager to try the next delicious item. - Matt B. (TripAdvisor review)
We had an amazing time eating like locals on our food tour in Rome. Our guide, Eric, was incredibly knowledgeable about the city as a whole, the food we were eating, and the wine/beer pairings. This was one of our favorite activities in Rome! - Amy M.
Luca was absolutely AMAZING! We had a whirlwind vacation with travel through London, Paris, Rome and a cruise through the islands of Greece. We saw a ton on our vacation, but everyone in our group of 4 actually rated the Trestavere Twilight food tour as #1 of all the things we did and saw over our entire trip! - Julie

Taste of Trionfale Market Tour

rome food market

The Taste of Trionfale tour, visits the largest food market in Rome along with a handful of locally loved restaurants. Your introduction to Italian cuisine begins with breakfast at a local Sicilian pasticceria.

Next enjoy the best pizza in Rome at the legendary Pizzarium, recommended by Anthony Bourdain and countless bloggers. Famed baker Gabriele Bonci known as the ‘Michelangelo of pizza,’ creates more than 50 variations each day.

Daily toppings are impossible to predict, but expect to find the highest quality, in season produce. Favorites include the potato and mozzarella and the fig with prosciutto.

Following Pizzarium, visit La Nicchia Cafè  gourmet food shop. Here try cheeses and cured meats, truffles, aged balsamic vinegars, olive oils and other treats.

Cheese tastings include Parmigano Reggiano drizzled with 30 year aged balsamic, Gorgonzola dolce and Pecorino Romano.  Sample some of the finest prosciutti, including Parma, San Daniele and Cinta Senese. D.O.C.G Falangina wine will be offered to compliment the tastings.

Nothing puts you more in touch with the Roman culture than the Trionfale market, with its captivating characters, colors and sounds. Meet the families running these stalls and learn how to shop like a local.

Sample juicy buffalo mozzarella, melanzane parmigiana and porchetta. The Italian wine labeling system is demystified, with natural wine tastings from vineyards across the country.

Following the market, savor homemade pasta and tiramisu from the locally loved family owned restaurant Il Segreto. D.O.C.G Vermentino wine is offered.

Additional food and wine tastings at all venues are permitted for those who wish to have extra throughout the tour. Receive essential food tips of the city, to ensure your enjoyment of Rome’s best foods, will not end with our Rome food tour.
