Meet Kerala's women-only travel group: 'Appooppanthaadi'

Women’s travel group river rafting in Manali

Sajna Ali has the best quality that winners have—attitude. Her story starts way back in 2014 when she and a few friends planned a weekend trip from Thiruvananthapuram to Odisha . When they bailed, Sajna did not sulk. Instead, she went solo, came back home to Kerala and started a women-only travel group. This June, she completed the 398th professionally-organised trip of her travel agency named Appooppanthaadi.

The 36-year-old Sajna, a mother to a two-month-old baby girl, aims to celebrate the travel company’s 400th trip milestone before the year is out. In the last seven years, 4,300 women have travelled across India, thanks to the decision made eight years ago. Another first for her travel company is its first international trip slated for this year. Sajna’s best memory is about how it all started—the maiden trip to Rosemala in the Kollam district with eight women. “I posted the fun parts of the trip on social media and inquiries started flooding in. I thought it was the right time to start this travel agency as a side hustle,” she remembers.

Sajna Ali

Sajna’s wanderlust started when her father, a truck driver, brought home goodies and postcards from his peregrinations. “He would save money to treat me with sweets, savouries, local garments and photographs. Our bedtime stories were often about his travels. It has been my dream to travel the world. I never thought I would start a travel company that would come so far,” says the techie who quit her job in Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram to pursue her passion for travel.

As the travel company hits the 400th tour milestone this year, Sajna wants to give back to society. A ‘give-back-to-the-community’ trip that involves volunteering in a village is on the cards. The members of the trip could be volunteering their time for anything––from teaching language skills to coding to the locals. Appooppanthaadi has tied up with Responsible Tourism Mission Kerala, the state government’s mission to promote sustainable travel. Another association is the travel fellowship Prayaana. As part of this, her company will sponsor short two-day trips for travel enthusiasts to promote offbeat destinations in return for blog and video posts online.

Her main source of travellers is the agency’s eponymous Facebook group which has 11,000 members. Sajna is the administrator of 22 WhatsApp groups with 300 members each and uses social media to promote and finalise travel plans. The travel pioneer thinks that travel, especially solo travel for the average Indian woman, is less about visiting a place, ticking off the sightseeing spots or taking selfies. “Solo travel is empowering. I have seen hundreds of women who feel liberated travelling with us.

Some were travelling on their own for the first time in 50 years. Solo travel brings out their fun side; it makes them feel independent, confident and competent,” she states. Sajna keeps the trips budget-friendly and even does a recce for every place before she organises the program. “My top concern is the safety of my female travellers. We never compromise on that,” she insists.

Lights in hotel corridors are checked out. They take along spare battery torches, safety apps and self-defence devices like pepper sprays and tasers. Sajna’s achievements include winning a `40 lakh fellowship grant for a special travel project by Aao. Although Covid-19 put a brake on travel, she now is back to work with two office staff and 18 travel volunteers.

Appooppanthaadi has an evocative meaning for Sajna. The word sums up the fun and carefree times of her childhood when she sat on her grandfather’s lap listening to his stories and playing with his beard. “Now, travel makes me feel liberated and blissful.” Have feet, will travel, should be her T-shirt slogan.

Wanderwomen: This Kochi-based women’s travel group is embracing sisterhood and friendship, one trip at a time

Weekend getaways and quick staycations offered by Mzafiri enable women to break daily routines, and embark on a journey of self-discovery.

“Mzafiri is a variant of the word ‘Msafiri’, meaning traveller in Swahili, and that’s exactly what we are — travellers at heart,” says Sangamittra Asok, co-founder of Mzafiri , a women-only travel group. It all started when Sangamittra, a content producer, and Navya Chandran, a college professor — both travel enthusiasts based in Kochi — met on Instagram and started taking trips together.

What initially began as a delightful friendship between the duo quickly transformed into something more after a few weekend getaways across Kerala.

“Soon, other women — cousins, friends, friends of friends — began to show interest, and we embraced the ‘more the merrier’ spirit. In January 2020, we organised a small trial trip to Wayanad with only five participants,” reminisces Sangamittra.

Shortly after, they ventured on a weekend trip to Yellapetty, a charming village on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, with 11 participants. “We loved immersing ourselves in nature’s lap and being city birds set loose in the wild,” she adds.

However, the pandemic paused their endeavours. Eventually, they recommenced their activities by organising a staycation at the enchanting Vembanad Lake in Vaikom, Kerala, in July 2022.

“Many women have to fight to indulge in simple pleasures like travelling on their own or with the company they choose. We also see women putting each other down, enforcing patriarchal norms on each other, and wanted to rewrite this existing narrative. As a team, we aspired to provide a space for women to break free from anything that hinders their thirst for exploration,” Sangamittra shares.

Mzafiri keeps each trip intimate with a maximum of 13 participants, including the founders. To date, they have organised nine trips, comprising eight local trips to scenic locations in Kerala and the Kerala border, and an excursion to South Goa.

They have expanded their membership to around 100 participants now, with 25-30 active members. These diverse women, ranging from their early 20s to 60s, belong to various backgrounds — students, working professionals, homemakers, and even retirees.

For Sangamittra and Navya, Mzafiri isn’t a business venture. They ensure that every trip is budget-friendly without compromising on the quality of experiences, offering safe, secure, and hygienic accommodations. The budget for each trip ranges from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000, including travel expenses. Any variations would depend on the duration of trip, which can be either 24 hours or 48 hours.

“We choose accommodations owned by friends or acquaintances. I have an MBA degree in Travel and Tourism, which has connected me with people who own resorts, stays, and camps. This assures us of a certain level of quality,” Sangamittra laughs.

Not all trips have to be adventurous.

“We are drawn to serene, idyllic destinations, and we typically reach them by bus or train. From living in dorms along the coasts of Varkala to waking up in tents at enchanting places like Kolukkumalai, a quaint hamlet in Tamil Nadu, and relaxing in picturesque homestays in Idukki district, our journeys have been enriched with unforgettable experiences,” informs Sangamittra.

Aside from exploring the beauty of nature, Mzafiri trips go beyond traditional tourism, often encompassing cultural experiences, kayaking, and trekking. Women and children find joy in the simple pleasures of singing, dancing, and heartfelt conversations.

“A trip doesn’t have to operate on a tight schedule to be memorable, and being active is not always physical in nature. Finding calm and peace is paramount. We make sure that the vibe of the place is in harmony with the group, so that everybody feels comfortable,” Sangamittra says.

Travel therapy

The magic of Mzafiri lies not only in the destinations that the group visits, but in the bonds they create. The participants find themselves opening up and sharing not just happiness but also their worries and grief. According to Sangamittra, it’s almost like therapy, a safe space where thoughts flow freely without judgement.

“During conversations, many women often open up about deeply personal issues. In these instances, other members offer support, finding solutions to everyday problems together,” says Sangamittra.

For instance, “witnessing a woman enjoy a shot of vodka in the early hours may seem peculiar to some. But for others, it’s simply a normal way to unwind. The key lies in respecting each other’s choices and honouring individuality within the group”, Sangamittra emphasises.

“I had always been in search of a women-friendly travel group through which I could both indulge in fun activities and sight-seeing at the same time. When I found Mzafiri in 2020, these criteria were met,” says Mary Zareah, author of Vodka Sambar , a book about family, friendships, and travel.

Honouring nature and each other.

“We are dedicated to being responsible travellers, showing reverence for nature and supporting local businesses. As we sometimes travel with children, we have strict rules against littering and plastic use. This sets a good example for the younger generation,” says Sangamittra.

Respecting others and the environment is number one on the list for Sangamittra and Navya. They seek to maintain a friendly and inclusive space, both among fellow travellers and strangers they encounter. For instance, we seek prior consent before sharing photos or videos of fellow travellers online.

“Mzafiri is one of the best things to have happened to me,” says Hitha Basil. She works as Project Managing Officer at TCS, Kochi, and has been a part of Mzafiri since its inception.

“I was looking for a travel group that I vibed with. But, I could not find one until I met Sangamittra at a Zumba class. I joined a few ‘Mzafiris’ on a trip to Munnar and it was everything I could have hoped for. As they say, the journey is more important than the destination. I would say, the company matters too!” she adds.

Eternal wanderlust.

As they value the choices and preferences of their members, the duo takes a considerate approach when planning their trips. They recognise that some members may feel uncomfortable with the presence of children on certain trips.

“Before including any participant with a child, we seek explicit consent from all members involved. The parent and child are acquainted with all aspects of the trip,” says Sangamittra.

Sangamittra and Navya have big plans including international trips. Their next “local” trip, however, is a getaway to the backwaters of Alappuzha, planned for 19 August 2023.

“Mzafiri will always be a space — to escape, to be your authentic self, and to forge friendships that last a lifetime,” Sangamittra concludes with a smile.

My Ultimate Travel Guide to Kerala | Solo Female Travel

  • November 24, 2020
  • india , solo , travel , wanderer , wanderlust

Some people are complete water babies; they love beaches, lakes and everything aqua. Others love the land; hills, peaks and vast expanse of greenery. And others like me love both. And the best place to visit for the best of both worlds is Kerala. To make it even more exciting, you can travel solo to Kerala!

As a solo female traveller, what better place to explore than Kerala? Kerala is called God’s Own Country for good reason. It has repeatedly topped India’s HDI or Human Development Index for years now. It h as the best literacy rate in the country and ranks very high on the education and health fronts.

And due to its picturesque locations, Kerala is a major tourist attraction as well. Solo female travellers like me prefer to go to Kerala because it is one of the safest places to visit in India. It even won the award for best governed state along with Tamil Nadu and Goa recently. Read the blog if India is a safe place for solo female travellers  to know more.

The people of Kerala are SO friendly and welcoming. The locals are used to having tourists around, and will go out of the way to help you. Here’s a pro tip: try to talk to the locals in Malayalam (the local language) , and see the bewilderment on their faces! Look up a translator app on your phone. Even a few words like Namaskaaram (hello), Nanni (thank you) and Kshemikku (Sorry) will do. Many people are comfortable with English, but a little Malayalam will not hurt. If you’re travelling solo for the first time, here’s a blog on  how to beat all awkwardness and just kill it!

A land of Cleaner roads and denser forests

female travel partner in kerala

Apart from this, what I really love about Kerala is its general cleanliness. The state takes its commitment to the Indian government’s Swachh Bharat Mission seriously. The cities, towns and even the small villages are well-planned here. So if you are a solo female traveller who is a cleanliness freak, worry not. Kerala is the place for you. Ah, and I cannot stop raving about the drainage system. Even on the worst of rainy days, this system ensures that the roads are not flooded.

I am not exaggerating when I say that most of Kerala – even the habitable lands – resemble dense forests. I had to count the number of barren lands I encountered and trust me, they were very few.

When should you visit Kerala?

The best time to visit Kerala is the monsoons (June-September). The green expanse of land adorned with glorious showers make for great viewing. The fragrance of the earth as the first drop of rain falls on it – called petrichor – is incomparable to anything. I liked stepping out on rainy days (with a raincoat on – OBVIOUSLY). But I also loved sitting in my room, looking out my window and marvelling at nature’s beauty. Of course, with a steaming hot cup of chaaya (milk tea) in my hand. Such was my Kerala experience, and being an introvert did not stop me from enjoying every bit of it. Are introverts good at solo tripping?

There are many wonderful places in God’s Own Country, no doubt. But these are my picks for top five cities to visit in Kerala for solo female travellers:

 1. Alappuzha

female travel partner in kerala

Hear the word ‘Alappuzha’, and what immediately comes to mind is the backwaters. The backwaters are an intricate system of lakes, canals and other waterways that eventually meet the Arabian sea, the backwaters are a must-visit place in Alappuzha.

You can take a relaxing ferry ride, or better even, rent a houseboat across the backwaters. The houseboats in Alappuzha are a tad expensive to rent, but totally worth it. It is literally a house in a boat – with wonderfully furnished rooms and bathrooms, and even air conditioning!

On my solo trip to the Alappuzha backwaters, I rented an entire houseboat for myself. The staff of the houseboat were friendly and made me feel comfortable. They served me the local cuisine – complete with hot favourites such as the Karimeen pollichathu (Baked pearl spot), Pepper duck and Spicy fish curry.

I absolutely enjoyed the scenic beauty of the Kuttanadan landscape! Each of the homes are like little islands and you need to row yourself to get to them. I could not believe my eyes when I saw this – I did not know that such a thing was even possible!

If you take a trip to Alappuzha as a solo female traveller, then you should surely go to Vembanad Lake. Fishing is the main source of livelihood here. If you are up for it, accompany the local fishermen on a fishing trip like I did. The precision and skill with which they catch the fish is just mind-blowing!

A non-touristy thing I did in Alappuzha is observe the coir-making process and even be a part of it. You must be wondering what coir is. It is a type of fibre made using the husk of the coconut. Not many tourists are drawn to Alappuzha’s rich coir industry. You may just get an opportunity to witness something unique after all. The entire process – from defibering to extraction is marvellous!

 2. Kumbalangi

female travel partner in kerala

Before the release of the 2019 Malayalam movie Kumbalangi Nights (which was even critically reviewed by the BBC), Kumbalangi was not well-known. Kumbalangi is a small island-type of-village in Kochi. If you like small, quiet hamlets teeming with life, then Kumbalangi should be on your travel list as a solo female travelling to Kerala.

Kumbalangi’s highlight is its fishermen and their fishing. they do not use normal fishing nets for this, but rather Chinese fishing nets. They are called Cheena Vala in the local language, Malayalam. They are fixed for some time on the edges of the water body instead of being thrown at the time of fishing. Dozens of Chinese fishing nets adorn Kumbalangi’s shoreline and they are a sight to behold.

The mangrove forests in Kumbalangi are another crowd-puller. As a solo female traveller, you will need a guide or a local to take you inside these thick forests. I suggest you do not go alone even for the sake of adventure because of wild animals. Mangroves also have a lot of leeches and other small insects, so better cover up! Wear boots and full-length clothes if you can. Many organisations do ‘mangrove walks’ in Kumbalangi now, so you can just sign up for them easily.

As a solo female traveller on a trip to Kumbalangi, you may not find fancy places to stay here. However, you can always bet on good homestays in the region. Always look for Google reviews before you book a homestay. Enquire about the availability of services such as laundry and steam iron beforehand. If they are not available, you may have to look for other local options.

If you like finger food, the thattukada (small eateries) in Kumbalangi are the right place for you. They serve tasty seafood with local catch from the sea. Fried fish with local masala, crab roast, deep-fried squid and prawn curry are some must-try dishes here.

An exciting non-touristy thing I did in Kumbalangi is enjoy the ‘sea sparkle’ in the waters there. The sea waters emanate a unique fluorescent light due to the presence of bioluminescent algae. This is nothing unusual for the locals in Kumbalangi, but it was a never-seen-before sight for me! I waded through the shiny waters all by myself and enjoyed some ‘me time’.

female travel partner in kerala

Cherai is the ultimate destination for beach lovers in Kerala. It is unlike the busy, always-so-crowded Marina beach in Kochi city. You will love Cherai especially if you are a solo female traveller because of the serene and calm atmosphere.

Cherai does not have any touristy monuments or buildings to visit. What makes it special is the vast beach surrounded by rocks. It is one of the cleanest beaches in Kerala which follows a strict no-plastic policy. Why? Because of dolphins! Who does not love dolphins? Dolphin-sighting is a common pastime in Cherai.

If you love taking photographs or love sketching picturesque locations, then you should go to Cherai. The sunrise and sunset, with fishing boats on the horizon, are just perfect for this purpose. If you wake up early enough, you can catch the sight of the fishermen loading the fresh catch into piles to sell them.

I expected a lot from the Cherai cuisine, but was a little disappointed to find out that most dishes lacked salt in them. Especially in the dishes made of fish. I asked the proprietor of the property I was staying in about his and he said people use less salt in general in the area. I wonder why, to this day. If you are from the area or know anybody from Cherai, could you let me know why?

I also noticed that there is saltness that lingers in the air at Cherai so I suggest you carry a scarf with you. Or else the wind might ruin your hair. And a bad hair day is not a good start to anybody’s trip, right?

A non-touristy thing I did at Cherai was to give someone’s pet dog a walk! A tourist was looking for some help with walking her dog as she was carrying fresh fish from the Munnambam harbour. I offered to help her out (for selfish reasons as I love animals). I felt right at home in a strange land. A little kindness does not hurt anyone.

4. Thrissur

female travel partner in kerala

Elephants, temples, celebrations. These are what the cultural capital of Kerala, Thrissur, embodies. If you want a slice of the Kerala festive spirit, then you should visit Thrissur around May. This is when the famous Thrissur Pooram, the annual festival of the Thrissurkar (People of Thrissur) happens. Mighty tuskers adorned in silks sway in unison to the traditional percussion instruments. People get immersed in the music and forget themselves. Bazaars are put up in the famous Sakthan ground, and everybody – from children to elders rejoice. It is nothing like anything you have seen before, mark my words. As a solo female traveller on a trip to Kerala, the Thrissur Pooram has to be on your must-visit list.

The sites where the Pooram happens – the Vadakkumnathan Temple and the Paramekkavu Temple – are tourist attractions in themselves, even on a regular day. They are two of the oldest temples in all of Kerala. Getting up before dawn and taking a trip to the temple fields will give you a sense of inner peace. You could also chat up with the locals to understand the meaning behind the rituals. They can also give you a brief history of each temple and why they came to be built on that particular piece of land.

Thrissur is nothing without the world-famous Swaraj Round or Thrissur Round. It is the second-largest roundabout in the whole world and the second in South Asia. It is 2 km long and connects all the major commercial hubs in Thrissur. The Thrissur Round is also special because it is the spot where the famous Puli Kali (Tiger Show) happens. It takes place during the Thrissur Pooram.

Thrissur has some of the most iconic restaurants in Kerala. If you are a die-hard foodie like me, you should head to Bharath Hotel in Thrissur. Though it is called a ‘hotel’, it is not one. It is a restaurant. It is an Indian habit to call a restaurant hotel. Bharath Hotel is undoubtedly the best vegetarian restaurant in Thrissur. Fluffy pooris, crispy dosas and smooth thayir vadai (curd vada) are its specialties. If you love Biryani as much as I do, you should go to Sapphire Hotel (again a restaurant, not a hotel). The meat is deep-fried before being baked with rice and spices. Simply irresistible!

I did an exciting non-touristy thing in Thrissur. As I was passing through Swaraj Maidan, where elephants usually stop before their next festival or event, I got an opportunity to give a bath to a big elephant. I casually asked the mahout if I could pat the elephant. That is when he told me that he was going to bathe the tusker. I asked if I could join in and what followed was great fun. It was kind of scary at first, but I understood what a majestic creature the elephant is! Well, there is a first-time for everything I guess.

Travelling to Kerala as a solo female, but Munnar is not there on your list? Then there is something awfully wrong with your list! Hills stations are popular for their pleasant weather and erstwhile British charm, and Munnar is no different. It is the crown on the head of the beautiful district of Kerala that is Idukki. Temperatures never extend or go below 20 degrees in Munnar and that is why it is an evergreen place to visit. Suppose you want a place to relax and rewind during the unforgiving Indian summers – go to Munnar!

If you like a hot cuppa, then the tea gardens at Munnar should be the place to go first. You could wear the hat of a fine tea sommelier for a couple of hours and taste the finest teas. the local tea pickers could show you how a typical day is for them, and you could do some picking too. Trekking around the hilly areas is a great option too, especially for solo female travellers to explore places on their own.

Water falling with a rush of intensity has always fascinated me. And I love water bodies like dams. If water makes you happy too, then you should head to Munnar’s very own Mattupetty Dam. You could take a walk along the top of the dam or do some boating. The locals are very friendly at the dam and may even teach you a boating trick or two. If birdwatching is of any interest to you, you may be pleased to know that the dam is home to many indigenous birds and animals. Some of the wildlife is also endangered, so make sure you do not overstep boundaries while interacting with them.

If you cannot get enough of wildlife, then the Eravikulam National Park is just the place for you. It has a bit of history attached to it as it is Kerala’s first national park. It is home to the very famous Lion-tailed macaque and the Indian Gaur. You can also personalise your tour to the park with your very own tour guide for a truly unique experience.

Some tips to keep in mind

Travelling to Kerala as a solo female tripper can be very exciting. However, adhering to a few pointers can make the difference between a good journey and a great journey. Note the following before embarking on the ultimate journey to Kerala:

  • Always be on your guard. If you are feeling ‘meh’ about your first solo trip, here’s a blog  on my first solo travel experience . As a solo female traveller on her way to Kerala, you need to know the local helpline numbers in Kerala. Dial 1090 for the Crime Stopper Helpline and 1961 for general inquiries.
  • Kerala is very humid – whether it is pouring heavily or it is burning hot. So do not choose synthetic fabrics. Go for natural ones like cotton, soft silk or linen.
  • You need special permission to enter certain places. So enquire about the place you are visiting beforehand.

kerala solo female

  • Culturally, people are averse to revealing clothing in the state. So being a little modest will not do you any harm.
  • Always watch your step in Kerala. I mean this literally. As much as we love dense vegetation and forests, we should also be wary of poisonous snakes. Do not walk in dark spots without a flashlight in hand. Do not forget to carry these important things too.

Meet Kerala's women-only travel group: 'Appooppanthaadi'

Women’s travel group river rafting in Manali

Sajna Ali has the best quality that winners have—attitude. Her story starts way back in 2014 when she and a few friends planned a weekend trip from Thiruvananthapuram to Odisha.

Where to go in Kerala: Tips for Female Solo Travel

Last Updated on November 22, 2023

A blog written by Nicky Millar on where is best to visit in Kerala. She gives tips for female solo travel in Kerala from a first-hand perspective.

Kerala is arguably one of the best places to visit in India. From rolling tea plantations, sweeping game reserves to mystical backwaters. Not to mention the food, people and climate – this place has everything!

Kumily and Periyar National Park, Kerala

I started my Kerala adventure in Kumily because mudslides prevented me from getting to Munnar, which is the place to go see tea plantations. Although the weather was a little grim at the end of the monsoon period, I felt it to be a worthwhile trip.

I decided to get an auto-rickshaw tour guide. This was the first time I had done this sort of thing. But given the distance between the sites, it was well worth it. I ventured from a coffee factory to an ayurvedic spice farm, a tea plantation and finally, a view of the town that I hear is breathtaking.

The only downside was not being able to visit the Periyar Game Reserve due to extortionist prices if one is travelling alone. One of my tips for solo female travel in Kerala is that the safaris, although expensive.

If you don’t have any friends to fill that vehicle with, well then I am sorry for you. To be fair, I believe that you could go on the boat, which I am sure is fab, but I highly doubt whether wildlife spotting would be the greatest of priorities on a ferry full of families.

Visiting the Backwaters in Kerala

My advice for solo female travel in Kerala is that you are able to do just as much as you had hoped for. Visiting the backwaters is definitely a must-see adventure. After only one night (enough if you are not doing the parks), I got the bus to Kottayam and then the local ferry to Alleppey.

Although seemingly long-winded, the trip is well worth your time as you meander through the backwaters. This is at not even a tenth of the price of tourist cruises, and you have the added bonus of getting a sneak preview into the lives of the people who live along these canals.

Being the only foreigner on board there was a fabulous atmosphere and feeling of authenticity that you cannot buy for any amount of money!

My lack of friends was glaringly obvious once again when I arrived in Alleppey. It was here that I found that the houseboats are rented out individually at unattainable prices for a single-backpacker budget. Having spied them from my ferry ride, I have no doubt that it would have been a special experience.

If you are able to hire out a houseboat then I recommend staying for more than one night. This will allow you to get away from the throngs of other boats moored up alongside you. I decided to move on after one night. I got an easy bus to Ernakulam then caught a ferry to Fort Kochi.

Exploring and eating in Fort Kochi

What a wonderful city, super quaint with an eclectic mix of tourist shops/restaurants and local flavour. Though it is hungry work, I highly advise you to explore the old Jewish quarters by foot and boy was I rewarded that night! I ate possibly my single most favourite meal to date here.

Near the Chinese fishing nets, there is a fish market where you can pick out which of the day’s fresh catch tickles your fancy. I chose the squid, snapper and a dash of tiger prawns (I did share with a fellow solo traveller, don’t worry).

Once you have sussed this, a little man magically appears to guide you to his restaurant. This is where he cooks the seafood to perfection – grill/fry/spicy/herby you name it! All for a nice INR 210, I could get used to that!

Another activity I decided to do was a proper backwater tour. There are companies that conveniently source a whole bunch of singles/small groups and take them together! There are easier options if you chose to do solo female travel in Kerala. Although I ummed and ahhed for a long while about going, I am so glad I did!

While the ferry from Kottayam was great, it is unable to give you a sense of the smaller, more jungle-like backwaters. Therefore a full day trip, with lunch included, was certainly time well spent!

Overall, while Kerala has some of the most spectacular scenery on offer, it may be worthwhile doing some research into prices if you are doing it solo or perhaps looking into tour groups.

A great tip for women travelling in Kerala is to just be flexible and willing to adjust. You can get just as much out of it as you desire.

A 7-Day Kerala Itinerary (Solo Female Traveler Approved!)

A Seven-Day Itinerary for Kerala, India Featuring Beaches, Backwaters and Tea Plantations

Kerala is one of the most beautiful destinations on the planet, and my Kerala itinerary will help you see the most spectacular places in this region in just seven days.  This is the exact route that I followed while I was traveling as a solo female in South India, but the only difference is that I stayed in the region for several weeks, and I know that not everybody has that much time.

I have seen other Kerala itineraries that have you moving between different cities and towns every night, but that’s not my preferred travel style. I like to take things more slowly, so I have time to wander, explore and get immersed in the local culture. India is one of those places where everything moves impossibly quickly and impossibly slowly at the same time, and this itinerary has enough flexibility to accommodate those ebbs and flows.

Day 1 – Arrive in Kochi

See the Chinese Fishing Nets in Fort Kochi on a Kerala Itinerary

The first stop on your Kerala itinerary will likely be Kochi, where you can fly into the Cochin International Airport. From there, it’s almost 90 minutes by taxi to the historic Fort Kochi district, so factor that transfer into your plans for your arrival day in Kerala.

Spend some time strolling around the quiet historic center of Fort Kochi, which is infinitely more peaceful than most of the other cities you’ll visit in India. Stop at Saint Francis Church, which was the original resting place of Portuguese explore Vasco de Gama (now he rests in Belem , Portugal). As sunset approaches, head to Vasco de Gama Square to see the famous Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against the skyline.  End your night with a leisurely dinner.

Where to Stay in Kochi

The guesthouse where I stayed in Kochi is now closed, but it was in a great location. Some nearby properties with very good reviews include Sajhome Fort Kochi and Bastian Homestay . As a solo traveler, I liked staying in guesthouses where I could get recommendations from the local owners and meet other backpackers.

If you’d prefer a more upscale hotel, there are two luxury properties right on the waterfront in the Old Town. Forte Kochi is a historic heritage hotel, and nearby Neemrana’s Tower House (part of a nationwide group of boutique hotels) has antique-adorned rooms around a beautiful outdoor pool.

Where to Eat in Kochi

There are lots of cute little restaurants in Fort Kochi, many of which are concentrated around Princess Street.  Here are a few you might want to check out:

  • Tibet Kitchen – I really like Tibetan food, and this restaurant near the Kerala Kathakali Center does it really well. I recommend the thukpa (noodle soup).
  • Kashi Art Cafe – This art gallery doubles as a delicious restaurant with international flavors ranging from vegan breakfast platters to hummus and pita.
  • Anantha Bhavan Inn – This pure veg restaurant gets great reviews for affordable set-price meals served on banana leafs.

Day 2 – Kochi

Kathakali Dance Show at the Cultural Center in Fort Kochi, Kerala, India

The highlight of your second day in Kochi will be a performance at the Kerala Kathakali Center, where you can see the traditional masked dances and musical performances of the region.  Book your tickets in advance, and be sure to show up for the early seating where you get to watch the performers apply their elaborate makeup.  You’ll need to be at the theatre around 4:45 pm, so plan the rest of your day accordingly.

I would recommend working with your accommodation to hire an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) driver for the day. Tell him what you’d like to see and he can plan a suitable route.  Some spots to consider include:

  • Mattancherry Palace – It’s not necessarily the most palatial palace you’ll ever see, but it is famous for its interior murals. It’s closed on Fridays and Saturdays, so I didn’t make it inside.
  • Jew Town – That’s the actual name of the neighborhood just south of Mattancherry Palace. There’s a sixteenth-century synagogue here, along with antique shops and a few quaint cafes.
  • Magic Pigeon Ceremony – Every day, around noon (arrive a bit early) the pigeons who reside at this Jain temple preform a “magical” ritual where they fly in circles around the temple three times before descending to be fed by worshippers and visitors.
  • Dhobi Khana Public Laundry – I could have spent all day at this massive public outdoor laundry facility. Seeing people wash their clothes the same way it was done a hundred years ago is a stark reminder that India is not a fully-developed country.
  • Bishop’s House and the Indo-Portuguese Museum – If you want to learn more about Portuguese colonialism in Kerala, visit these two spots near the Fort Kochi Beach.
  • Jail of Freedom Struggle – This small museum, situated in the local police station, tells the stories of the local people who resisted British colonialism and fought for Indian independence.

With a stop for lunch that should be more than enough to fill your day before the Kathakali show.  After the show, go out for a relaxed dinner. I’m a vegetarian, but if you’re not then you’ll probably want to try one of the local fish curries made from the daily catch.

Day 3 – Kochi to Alleppey

Alappuzha Lighthouse in Alleppey Kerala India

The second stop on your Kerala itinerary will be Alleppey (Alappuzha in Malayam). I did the trip by taxi and the drive was absolutely, unbelievably beautiful. Wikipedia calls the land here a “narrow landform”, not an island or a peninsula, and for most of the trip you get these spectacular jungle and sea views. I think that most of the buses drive further inland, so if there’s room in your budget do consider a taxi (and negotiate a bit of extra money for some photo stops en route).

Upon arrival, work with your accommodation to organize a boat cruise for the following morning. Then, walk towards Alappuzha Beach, a long stretch of golden sand that is popular with both locals and tourists. It’s possible to swim here (and it looks quite clean) but as a solo female traveler I didn’t feel comfortable going in solo, so I just waded in up to my knees. Even that caught the eye of quite a few local men!

While you’re at the beach, ascend the striking lighthouse, which dates back to the 1860s. You’ll get panoramic views of the beach and the town, and a sneak peak at some of the canals you’ll sail down tomorrow.

If there’s still time left in the day, you can walk or take an autoricksaw to the Mullakkal Market, a bustling shopping street (be careful of the traffic!). The nearby Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple is 500-year-old Hindu temple built in the typical style of Kerala. People come from around India to see the famous idol of the goddess Durga that is kept inside.

Where to Stay in Alleppey

I chose to stay in a hostel in Alleppey because I was hoping to connect with other travelers for a shared backwaters boat tour. I stayed at goSTOPS Alleppey , although at the time it was under a different name. I had a spacious private room, but it ended up being hard to meet other travelers as there wasn’t a common area.  When I went out for dinner I noticed that Zostel Alleppey looked busy, with lots of foreign travelers mixing and mingling in the common areas.  I wish I’d stayed there, even if the reviews aren’t quite as good.

If you want something a bit nicer, there are some lovely beachfront homestays on the beach, just north of the lighthouse. I’d start my search with Neela Waters or Asthamaya Beach Homestay .

⭐ You can also spend one or both of your nights in Alleppey on a houseboat!  This tour is rated 4.9/5 and includes a houseboat cruise through the backwaters from noon until 9:00 am the next day. It includes pick-up in Kochi. ⭐

Where to Eat in Alleppey

Unsurprisingly, Alleppey is known for its fish dishes. Ask your guide or your hotel where they recommend going for great fish and seafood. As a vegetarian, I can recommend these spots:

  • Hotel Aryaas Vegetarian Restaurant – When the staff at my hotel found out I was a vegetarian they put me in an autorickshaw and sent me to this pure veg restaurant, where they just kept putting more and more and more food on my plate. I was the only foreigner and I had lots of fun.
  • Cafe Catamaran – A fun and trendy beachfront restaurant that mostly caters to foreigners. The menu has a combination of Indian and international dishes.
  • Cafe Paradiso Espresso – Right by the pier where you catch the boats into the backwaters, this eclectic cafe does great coffees, juices and sandwiches.

Day 4 – Alleppey Backwaters

Kerala Backwaters Near Alleppy in South India

I visited India as part of an eight-month around-the-world trip, and when I think back to the top three most memorable experiences from the trip, my day spend sailing through the Alleppey backwaters ranks right up there. Truly, it is like you’re in the Jungle Cruise.

It’s possible to cruise the backwaters entirely by public ferry, but I don’t know how a foreigner could do that and not end up lost in a distant canal with no way to get home that evening. Routes and schedules for the ferries that sail through these waters are hard to find, hard to read and nearly impossible to actually confirm. So, the safest, easiest and most comfortable way to spend a day in the Kerala backwaters is through an organized boat tour. Most of these tours will start on the public ferries, and once you’re well into the canals you will switch to a canoe or kayak that is paddled by a guide.

Your accommodation should be able to help you book a tour, as long as you give them a day or two of notice. The tour will start in the early morning at the jetty, and will likely include a stop for lunch (we stopped in a local home) and at least one other stop to buy cold drinks and snacks. The rest of the time you’ll be sailing through the backwaters, taking in the beautiful views, watching people who live on the water go about their daily lives, and waving at people passing on other boats.

I can’t recommend this experience enough, and even if you don’t have a full week I think it’s worth spending just two or three days in Kerala so that you can include this on your India itinerary.

Day 5 – Alleppey to Munnar

Elephant Crossing in Munnar, Kerala

The final stop on your Kerala itinerary will be Munnar, a hill station in the nearby Western Ghats mountain range.  I took a bus directly from Alleppey to Munnar, but if the schedules have changed you may need to backtrack and change in Kochi.

You could also make the trip in a taxi for about $50 USD – it’s expensive because you’ll probably have to pay for the driver to go both ways, as he’s unlikely to get a fare back. Still, if you’re in a group it cuts the travel time by almost half, and you can stop for photos at some of the waterfalls on the way up.

You’ll probably arrive in Munnar in the early afternoon.  Get checked into your hotel, grab a light meal and then head to the Tea Museum. Here, you can learn about the history of the tea industry in the region and see how tea leaves go from field to cup. The tea museum is owned by Tata, an Indian conglomerate, and once you’ve visited you’ll start noticing the Tata name everywhere (even when you’re back home).

The center of Munnar is mostly for tourists, with shops selling expensive teas, spices and souvenirs. Feel free to browse around a bit before or after dinner, but retreat to your hotel early so that you’ll be ready for a big day tomorrow.

Where to Stay in Munnar

In Munnar, I stayed at Greenview Holiday Inn . It’s about 500 meters (slightly) downhill from the town center, but it has the added bonus of being quiet. The staff here helped me book my treks and tours to the surroundings.  Nearby, there is also Maharaja Cottage and SMM Cottage , which both also have good reviews. All three of these properties are basic, no-frills guesthouses.

If you’re looking for something fancier, you have to go further away from town. Blackberry Hills Nature Resort and Spa looks lovely, and the staff can assist with transportation into town for sightseeing and restaurants.

Where to Eat in Munnar

If you’re getting tired of eating vegetarian food, you’ll find more meat dishes in Munnar as many of the local restaurants are owned by Muslim families who don’t adhere to a vegetarian diet. Either way, you might want to consider these Munnar restaurants:

  • Saravana Bhavan – You’ll find these vegetarian restaurants across India, and the location in Munnar has some great dishes (you have to order their special, towering, cone-shaped dosa).
  • Rapsy Restaurant – I’m a vegetarian so didn’t come here, but my hotel recommended it for big portions of meat-based curries (including beef, chicken and seafood).
  • Tea Tales Cafe – If you’re missing Starbucks, this cafe has lots of sweet coffee drinks served hot and cold.

Day 6 – Munnar

Hike Through the Tea Plantations in Munnar, Kerala

There are several different ways to spend a full day in Munnar.  I was here for a few days and organized all of my excursions through my guesthouse – chat with them when you’re checking in to see what is available for the next day.

I spent one full day hiking in the hills around Munnar.  Although the hike was long it was not overly strenuous, and the views were beautiful. We got to see locals really working in the tea plantations (not the sanitized version you see in the Tea Museum) and it really gave me a new appreciation for the hard labor that goes into harvesting tea. We also saw some elephant droppings, but unfortunately we didn’t see any elephants on our trek.

Another day, my guesthouse organized an autorickshaw driver to take me on a full-day sightseeing tour . He took me through the tea plantations and up into the hills, all the way to the Top Station (the highest point) and the border with the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. Unfortunately it was quite foggy during my visit so the views were obscured, although this made the high-speed return drive a white-knuckle experience I will never forget!

If the weather is good you can also do one of a few different sunrise hikes from Munnar. These begin with a 4:30 am Jeep or autorickshaw ride to the trailhead, followed by a short trek to a beautiful lookout point where you can take in the views with a cup of steaming masala chai.

Be aware that even in the dry season, Munnar can be cold and damp due to its altitude. You’ll need warm clothes, and I would personally recommend hiking boots (or other shoes with non-slip soles) for any walking on trails outside the town center. I was just wearing my Nike running shoes and there were a few close calls.

Day 7 – Munnar to Kochi

Cute Cat in Kerala

I couldn’t find a photo of the bus that I took from Munnar back to Kochi, but I did find this photo of a very cute kitten underneath a motorcycle, and motorcycles have wheels, and buses have wheels, so it’s practically the same thing! 😉

From Munnar you will probably need to end your Kerala itinerary by traveling back to Kochi, either to catch a flight or to get on a train or bus to your next destination.  There are sleeper buses that travel from Munnar to both Bangalore and Chennai overnight, but I can’t imagine they would be particularly comfortable.

Make sure to follow along the drive on your phone using Google Maps (if you’re low on data you can download the offline map beforehand).  You probably noticed the waterfalls on your way up – now is your chance to get photos on the way down!

When you get back to Fort Kochi, end your trip to Kerala with a relaxing massage and skincare treatment at an Ayurvedic health care center like Ayushveda Spa or Ayurveda Sanctum . This will help heal your sore muscles (whether that’s from yesterday’s hike or yesterday’s bumpy autorickshaw ride!) and relax you before you embark on your next adventure!

8, 9 or 10 Days in Kerala

If you have more than seven days in Kerala, there are are few different ways you can extend my recommended Kerala itinerary:

  • If you didn’t do the overnight houseboat tour in Alleppey , that would be the first thing I added to my itinerary.
  • Further down the coast, Varkala is famous for its cliff-lined beach and a 2000-year-old Hindu temple
  • Periyar Tiger Reserve is about 90 kilometers south of Munnar, and by joining a guided tour of this national park you could see more than 60 species of mammals including elephants, tigers and leopards

While you’re in South India, I recommend spending at least one week at an Ayurvedic yoga retreat .  The one that I visited was located in an Ayurvedic doctor’s family-run guesthouse and featured vegan meals, daily Ayurvedic treatments and daily excursions around the region.

If you’re hesitating to book a trip to India, I can quell some of your worries with my India Travel Q&A .  I wrote down my questions before I traveled to solo to India, and then at the end of my trip I went back and answered them all.

Women travellers’ collective ‘Srishti’ is literally going places

 alt=

Stargazing nights, fun-filled trekking and some precious moments of celebration are on offer as women are joining hands to hit the road by holding on to their travel dreams tight. The ladies-only trips gained popularity in Kerala five to six years ago and the aim was to realize every woman’s dream to travel alone but with other like-minded women.

Women of all ages geared up

Women of all ages from girl students to elderly ladies are enthusiastic backpackers of travellers’ collective called ‘Srishti’, says Geethu Mohandas, the brain behind the travelling community. Girl students, working women, housewives and retired women are all ready to set on a journey.

“And once you hit the road everyone is young. Most of the enquiries we get relate to whether there is an age limit to be part of the collective. More persons are showing interest after people who have already travelled share their experience with others,” she adds.

More takers for season tours

‘She Lodge’ offers safe, affordable lodging in Kochi for travelling women

The natural season plays a pivotal role in selecting a travel destination. For example, if it is the summer season, people prefer to visit cooler places. Though initially the ladies-only trips were limited to destinations in Kerala, now the group is organizing foreign tours as well.

Security a priority

All the ladies-only trips are conducted by ensuring the safety of the women travellers. The organizers would undertake a trial tour to make sure that everything, including lodging, is in order before the all-women tour kicks off. The main aim of the trial tour is to ensure that adequate safety measures are in place. The group would embark on a journey only after the trial trip is made.

A glimpse of the travel memoir by Ms Athira Kumar from Bangalore who experienced Solo Women Trip in Kerala with Tyndis. Tyndis Tours curates best Solo Woman Travel in India. If you are interested, you can  contact us  to create a customized package for solo female travel in Kerala.

Kerala  is indeed a god’s creation. Being a Keralite, I have experienced it all: the beautiful landscape, the backwaters, traditions, and lip-smacking food. But the Solo women trip in Kerala with Tyndis was something extremely enticing and new to me.

I have always been a travel enthusiast, back in my childhood days I used to travel with my dad on his small official trips to the northern and western parts of India.

Solo Women backpacking Kerala Tour

Solo Women Trip in Kerala | Tyndis Backpacking Tour in Kerala

However since I moved to Bangalore, I love to travel solo. Travelling solo has brought out my inner confidence and gave me a different perspective on livelihood. That’s what made me book this Solo women trip in Kerala on the first hand – to experience Kerala in my way. And so, I went on a backpacking tour in Kerala with Tyndis.

Without further ado, here was the itinerary for my backpacking tour in Kerala.

I left from Bangalore on Saturday night by the Kannur express at around 9 p.m. and reached Kannur on Sunday morning by 10 a.m. It was a pretty long journey, so I was prepared (booked my tickets in advance). I stayed in a  homestay  arranged by Tyndis during this entire  backpacking tour  in Kerala.

Tyndis is an experiential travel company from Kerala. I got to know them through  Instagram . Their profile on  Theyyam Tour  in Kerala and  Experiential Activities  caught my eye.

In this solo women trip in Kerala, my stay was booked for a heritage backpacker homestay in Payyanur. But later, the accommodation was upgraded to the Heritage Inn – a brand new heritage home.

Team Tyndis helped me with the beautiful stay at the Swastikam Heritage Inn, situated at a 4 k.m. radius from the Payyanur railway station.  Tyndis Tours  having local members in their team from Payyanur were also helpful when it came to Theyyam Tour. They confirmed me the dates on which the Theyyam dance was being performed prior to my journey. (So, if you want to experience some of the rare art performances it’s good to get in touch with experiential travel companies like Tyndis for Theyyam Tour in Kerala).

Also, my host Rahul Narayanan from Swastikam Heritage Inn was very friendly and the  Kerala food  from their own restaurant was also great. (Must try: Idly-Vada combo)

I was fortunate enough to experience the ‘ Perum Kaliyattam ’, a form of Theyyam festival which is conducted in intervals of 12 or more years.

Theyyam  is a ritual art form in which it is believed that the God enters the body of the Theyyam performer and hence, believers consider the man dressed, as the visible manifestation of God and seek his blessings.

It was past dusk and I headed towards the temple ‘Sree Muchilott Bhagavathi Temple’, where the Theyyam ritual was going to take place. A massive crowd is all that I could see from a distance. People had come from various parts of the state to see the dance of the gods.

Solo Women backpacking Kerala Tour

Kannangattu Bhagavathy Theyyam in Kerala

I was informed at first itself that the  Theyyam  performance would last the whole night. So I decided to stay and came prepared. I stayed at the temple the whole night with other onlookers.

In intervals of an hour or sometimes two, the performer would enter the temple with the god’s paint on his face, (red designs which are very delicate and are almost invisible to our eyes), wearing  godly costumes  with a large headdress. He would then dance to the beats of the folk instruments like the Chenda and Elathalam.

As time went by, the crowd got thinner, but then too I felt safe. I loved the people there, so welcoming and loving. Some even invited me for breakfast at their place. The overall experience was mystical and thus fulfilled my ultimate purpose of travelling to the Malabar.

  • When to book a Theyyam Tour in Kerala:  It is played during the months between November and May.
  • Where to experience:  Temples and sacred groves in and around Kannur and Kasaragod districts. (Confirm the Theyyam dates with the localities)
  • What to carry along:  As you are gonna stay for some time to take all the essentials you would need.
  • Do not forget to research on Theyyam  before coming, will certainly help you understand it better. (Books like Nine lives by William Dalrymple and Theyyam: Merging with the divine by  Indu Chinta  can be referred)

Are you planning to explore the wonderful land of  Malabar ? Then Tyndis Tours is your perfect partner. You can experience an incredible  solo women trip  in Kerala with them.

I reached Ernakulam after a train journey of about 8 hours from Kannur. I was happy with the good memories of the Theyyam tour and pleasant experience. From the railway station, I took a paid auto to the Fort Kochi, took me around 20 minutes to reach the Zostel, Kochi. I always love to stay in Zostels and  Backpacker Hostels , plus point being they are easy on the pocket and also, you get to meet and interact with many travellers from across the world. Hostels are best for solo female travel in Kerala. I have used them on each of my solo women travel in India.

As I took a stroll through the streets of  Fort Kochi , my first thoughts on the city were “colourful and lively”. The streets were all lighted as it was Christmas and there were stalls in each corner selling Christmas goodies. I picked Kochi to experience the famous Biennale which is conducted from the months of October till March every year.

Solo Women backpacking Kerala Tour

Aspinwall – The main venue of the Biennale

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is India’s largest contemporary art event exhibited by Indian and International artists, at various venues across Kochi. Due to inadequate time, I decided to visit the main venues: I went to the primary venue, Aspinwall House, where I got the pass to the venues.

Entry Pass costs a 100 INR and lets you visit all the venues with the same pass. Aspinwall house is an oceanfront complex with scenic views and a number of warehouses exhibiting different kinds of art. My next stop was Pepper house (it has also a cafe and a small library inside the compound).

Visiting Kashi Art Cafe during Solo Women Trip in Kerala

Lastly, I visited the Kashi art cafe. The cafe was packed so had to wait for some time for my turn. I ordered the famous “Chocolate cake” (and it did justify all the hype given to it – A must try!!)

I spent the entire day visiting the venues and taking a stroll through the local market. And finally, I ended my small backpacking tour in Kerala by taking a ferry from the Kochi Port to Ernakulam, at around 7 p.m. After just a 10-minute ferry ride I reached Ernakulam and where I got the train back to Namma Bengaluru. It was truly an amazing solo women trip in Kerala.

I would recommend  Tyndis Tours  to anyone who’s in search for help in planning their backpacking tour in Kerala or Solo women travel in Kerala. They are the perfect choice you can have!

What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

Were you looking forward to a trip with your friends, only to find out that they had backed out last minute? Wondering how to find a travel companion online? Even if your family and friends' schedules don't match yours, your vacation doesn't have to be ruined because of it. GAFFL can help you to find the perfect travel companion for your next adventure.

The best way to find a travel buddy on GAFFL is to search for your desired destination and browse through thousands of user-generated trips created by solo travelers around the world.

female travel partner in kerala

A good travel companion is someone who has a similar itinerary to you. It's also someone you think you'll get along with.

Every user on GAFFL has a profile where they list their interests. If you and your potential trip mate share some common interests, it’ll make your trip go a lot smoother.

It's also important to have a similar budget in mind. If your travel companion wants to do more activities and eat at expensive restaurants but you can’t afford it, it can lead to an unpleasant trip for the both of you.

When browsing trips on GAFFL, make sure to read through the trip details to learn more about the trip and determine if the activities are something you want to do and can afford.

If you like a trip on GAFFL, simply click 'Connect,' and you'll be able to chat with your travel buddy right away. If you have your own travel plans, you can start your own trip and others can request to connect with you!

Finding the right travel companion online can be difficult for solo travelers. GAFFL, on the other hand, makes it very simple. Use our world-class real-time messaging system to get to know your potential travel partner. Chat with them to see if they'd be a good travel companion for you, and then plan together, meet up with your travel buddy, and start exploring together.

female travel partner in kerala

GAFFL is the best website/app for solo travelers looking for travel companions online because we prioritize our travelers' trust and safety. Our multi-step verification process includes social media, phone number, and a valid government ID, so you can be confident in your potential travel companion. With adventurers from over 190 countries, you can connect, chat, and find the perfect travel buddy to meet up with on GAFFL.

We truly believe that the best memories and experiences are the ones that are shared with others. It doesn’t matter if you’ve known someone for an hour or your whole life, when you do something badass together it’s sure to be a time you won’t forget.

Making connections and becoming friends with people all over the world is such a powerful tool to have when traveling. One day maybe you’ll visit your new friend in their homeland. Some of the best trips happen when you have a friend playing tour guide in their country.

GAFFL is a really cool opportunity to enrich your travels with like-minded people who will push you to get out of your comfort zone. No matter what type of personality you have, making new friends on the road is easier than ever.

One of the things that hold people back is that they don’t have a partner or a best friend to travel with and they feel scared and uncertain to travel alone, especially long-term. GAFFL helps with that!

Another thing that holds people back is the perceived cost of travel. While travel doesn’t have to be expensive, it’s always more affordable when you can share the cost of accommodation and groceries with someone else. Again, GAFFL provides a solution for that!

I think GAFFL plays a role by allowing solo travelers to find travel buddies when needed. Though solo travel is a great way to travel, there are some experiences that are better enjoyed with more people (some don’t even allow for solo).

Friends and families are not always available to travel with, and sometimes the interests do not align for travel. Or sometimes you just want to socialize while still being solo most of the time. I think GAFFL helps solve these problems.

I think this is a fabulous idea because the things that can get expensive while solo traveling can usually also be easily split between people. If you aren’t a hostel fan, it would be awesome to have people to split hotels and Airbnb with.

If car rental is the cheapest way to get around a destination, it would be ideal to have others to split the costs with. But most importantly it always makes the experience that much more memorable when you have new friends to share it with.

Solo travel is great. But there are some times that I do not recommend someone travel solo and where I personally try my hardest not to travel solo. Some examples of this relate to safety, like hiking a trail that doesn’t have many people walking it each day, or being in certain destinations where I’ve heard from others that it’s difficult as a solo female.

Other examples relate to expenses, like taking a road trip and renting a car. Situations like these are where I think something like GAFFL is a great idea. With GAFFL, you can find a group to go on that hike with or split that car rental with!

In 1895 Finley Company reorganized all plantations and constituted all under their management agent ‘The Kannan Devan Hills Producers Company’. In 1973 , after FERA(Foreign Exchange Regulation Act) came into existence, the Finley company lost its holdings and a new company constituted under their then management company Tata Tea. Solo Female Travel In Kerala – Is It Safe?

Solo Female Travel In Kerala – Is It Safe?

I enjoyed travelling alone in Kerala . There were moments when I felt a little jittery, and I had to be on my guard, but Kerala is pretty much safe for women travellers. I believe that a girl or a woman can be safe in any place as long as she knows how to take care of herself. There are certain things you can do to ensure your own safety as a solo female traveller no matter where you are!

Travelling alone in Kerala

So where did I travel in Kerala?

I spent 8 days in Kerala, and I travelled to Kochi, Trivandrum, Kovalam and a village called Venganoor. I’d say travelling through Kerala was like a breeze. I really didn’t face any challenge as such. As I mentioned earlier, you have to ensure your safety by making appropriate choices in terms of transport, accommodation and your itinerary.

Also read: Travelling Alone In Arunachal Pradesh

Arriving late in the evening

I have to admit that unlike my other solo travels in the past, I travelled quite a bit in the late evening in Kerala. I usually choose not to arrive at a destination late in the night. Also, I make it a point not to roam around alone after it’s dark. However, my travel plans for Kerala were such that I had to travel to my hotel from Cochin airport after 8 o’clock in the night, and then even in Trivandrum, I reached my hotel at 9 o’clock in the night, as my train was delayed.

I’d say if you happen to be in such a scenario, whether it’s Kerala or any other destination, the best thing to do is to keep your family back home in the loop about your whereabouts. Like in my case, I shared my location, cab and driver details with my husband. Not just that, but you should also keep the hotel manager informed about your trip.

Kerala is a lovely destination for solo female travellers. However, being safe is your own responsibility.

Make use of public transport – the buses

Although Kerala has the facility of Ola and Uber, the option of travelling on local buses is always better and cheaper. It’s good to use autos and cabs for short distances, but for longer trips, opt for buses. For instance, I travelled on a Govt. bus from Fort Kochi to the airport, which is a distance of almost 40 km. The ride cost me only INR 44 and I felt safe and comfy throughout the journey.

Solo female travel in Kerala

Choose pre-paid taxi at the airport/train station

To take a taxi or auto to reach a hotel, it’s always better to go for the pre-paid option. The thumb rule that I follow is that I always call up the hotel staff and inquire about the best transport option to reach the hotel.

It’s safe to travel with the autowalas known by your home stay/resort

At the resort where I stayed in Venganoor, they had their known Tuk-Tuk guys who would come whenever any of the guests needed to go out for sightseeing. I think that’s the wisest thing to do if your resort is situated in a deserted place.

Tips for being safe in Kerala

Should you roam alone after it’s dark in Kerala?

I think it’s better not to roam around alone in the night anywhere. However, there are two sides to this idea – you can easily be out in the night alone in a city like Mumbai, because it’s buzzing till late into the night. As far as Kerala is concerned, it gets a bit quiet after 7 in the evening. So, the idea is to follow the trend of the locals. If you don’t see many locals, especially women hanging out at night, you should do the same. Even people in Fort Kochi wind up their day quite early, which makes the streets a bit deserted by 7:30 pm.

Always stay at good places

I consciously chose my accommodations in Kerala, which had the reputation of being safe for solo travellers. As a solo woman traveller, I always choose to stay at well-recognised homestays, which I usually pick from Airbnb or Booking.com .

Homestays in Fort Kochi for solo female travellers

Take help from the locals

It’s always good to take travel advice and help from the locals of a place, because they know the place better. For instance, I was out having dinner at a restaurant in Fort Kochi around 7:30, and by the time I finished my dinner, it was 8 pm. I made it a point to inform the restaurant staff about going back to my homestay. One of the staff, very diligently, stood with me outside the restaurant to make sure that I got an auto.

Best Time to visit Varkala:

November to March remains the best time to visit Varkala, it is this the coolest time of the year. However, even Monsoon is a good time to visit too as the whole of Varkala will be lush green with relatively cool weather.

The summer months of April & May are not recommended as the temperature rises to 40 Degree Celsius plus.

Things to do in Varkala

If you are one of the demanding tourists who want to cover 10 - 15 sightseeing points every day then Varkala is not the destination for you, Varkala is a place to enjoy the leisurely slow pace of life. Wake up with the Sunrise on Papanasam beach and enjoy sunsets at the main Varkala beach.

1) Papanasam Beach

female travel partner in kerala

Known for religious values and spirituality, Papanasam beach is part of the Arabian Sea in Kerala. Nestled at a distance of 39 km north of Trivandrum, Papanasam is the second best beach of Kerala, after Kovalam. The quiet and clean beach is your perfect getaway location to rest your feet away from your daily routines. Its increasingly becoming a surfer's destination thanks to the soft sand and gentle waves.

2) Kappil Beach

Surrounded by vast greenery on one side while the other one glazed with golden sand and rock boulders, Kappil beach is located just a length of 7 km away from Varkala. However, unlike other places, Kappil beach is beyond just another tourist destination in Kerala! The aesthetic natural vibes in and around the shore are always ready to mesmerize your soul. Walk along the beach or lie down to soak in the sun, you can't miss the tranquil tune of the waves crashing down the exquisite beach.

3) Janardanswamy temple

female travel partner in kerala

A tinge of mythology and history combined to enrich the religious epitome of Varkala can be found in Janardanswamy Temple. Built during the Vedic period, one can absorb the architectural splendor, which is devoted to the preserver, Lord Vishnu. He appears standing with four elements that hold mythological importance. These elements are the Gada , Chakra, Shanghu, and Kumbham. Besides Lord Vishnu, the w alls are well-crafted with the sculptures of Lord Hanuman, Shiva, and Garuda as well.

You can visit for a holy pilgrimage to calm your soul with a serene aura prevailing around this 2000 years old temple. Surprisingly, Janardhan Swamy Temple is also known as the Benaras of South or Dakshin Kashi because people flock here to perform the rites and rituals of the deceased. There is also a sacred tree on which there is a ritual of married women / newly married girls tying dolls who are unable to conceive.

4) Anjengo Lighthouse

female travel partner in kerala

The more you stretch your eyes, the bluer it will capture. Varkala welcomes you to get an entire 360-degree view of the place from the top of the Anjengo lighthouse. What's special here? It was built back in the historic era of 1684, by the Britishers, the Anjengo lighthouse was initially used to navigate ships transported by the British people. Devoid of the past, it is now one of the important landmarks of Varkala with a huge tourist attraction. This 130-feet lighthouse is pretty popular for the best bird's eye view of the blue coastline of Varkala is one of the most beautiful photogenic destinations you will find around.

5) Jatayu Earth Centre

female travel partner in kerala

Kerala is already known for being one of the safest states for women in India. Just to add a tribute to women's safety and honor, Varkala presents you Jatayu Earth Centre. It is the world's largest eagle sculpture located on Jatayu rock hill where history and mythology are intricately woven in its aura. The 200 feet sculpture with a width of 150 feet and a height of 70 feet has a utility space of around 15,000 square kilometers. There is a temple for Lord Ram which is located along with some mythical markings that are fenced under this location. You can even trek to the top or take a ropeway ride which costs roughly INR 500 per person. Once Covid-19 ends one can even enjoy activities like zip lining here. There is also a temple dedicated to Lord Ram within the complex.

The legend has it that Jatayu the bird fell on this rock while trying to save mother Sita when Raavan was forcefully taking her to Lanka after abducting her on his Pushpak Viman. Goddess Sita then prayed that Jatayu lives until Lord Rama or Hanuman finds him so he can share the whereabouts of Raavan.

6) Anthujengo Fort

To the closest proximity of the Anjengo Lighthouse, is located the Anchuthengo Fort. Formerly it had the name Anjengo Fort which literally means five palm trees that emerged with a huge historical significance. This was the place that had been rented by the Britishers during the reign of Queen of Attingal. The East India Company had utilized this place for trading purposes but had left us a wonderful escape to sneak into the long-lost history once again. So grab your camera ASAP because you can't miss posing around the ruins and leftovers of the Anjengo Fort!

P.S. You can still find a bunch of palm trees around. Its a very small fort but we would say give it a visit if you are in Varkala.

7) Edava beach

female travel partner in kerala

You just can't stop your mind from thinking about beaches all around, because after you have left one, another one evolves in your way. But the best part o f this bea ch is that not many tourists know about this place. An absolute gem is hidden around the cliff of massive rock structure, named after the then king of Travancore, Udayamarthandapuram. It is just 4.7 km away from Varkala, which is absolutely a sweet tour to add.

8) Black Sand beach

female travel partner in kerala

Coming down to one of the secret black beaches of India, it seems like a stand-out attraction of this uncommon and offbeat destination of Kerala. With two lighthouses around, this beach is (not so) famous for the jet black beach and basaltic rocky boulders. Although it is far different from the glowing golden beach with sunshine over the top, it will still bring you aesthetic-worth photos.

9) Odayam beach

female travel partner in kerala

Spend a breathtaking sunset on the small oasis, residing at a stretch of 2 km from Varkala in Odayam beach. With bright sun and vibrant beaches, add a few colors to your journey to one of the best beaches in India. Just not that, you can even shop around the coconut grove, little shacks around for snacking, and the vast ribbon of white foamy waves.

10) Surf school

female travel partner in kerala

Varkala is a great surfing destination thanks to mostly calm and the surf-friendly terrain of Papanasam (Varkala beach). While there are many surfing instructors available locally, you can pre-book your surf lessons with Point Break Varkala

While swimming is more of a life skill it is not mandatory to learn to surf. We recommend at least a 3-day beginner's surfing course to everyone.

11) Kerala Ayurvedic Massage

female travel partner in kerala

Relax your mind and soul with the exquisite facility to avail of ayurvedic massage and spa. With numerous herbs and oils extracted from the natural ingredients, the treatment would feel no less than heaven. A combination of nature and science prevailing since the early Vedic period is known to make a positive impact on your mind and body.

12) Yoga Teacher training program

female travel partner in kerala

A lot of foreign tourists come to Varkala to learn about Yoga and they actually stay here for weeks & months learning Yoga to practice in their respective countries. While the world has taken note and given yoga its due importance, we Indians are yet to take up yoga seriously. We would say try and explore the benefits of Yog asanas when you are in Varkala.

13) Yoga sessions by the beach

female travel partner in kerala

Needless to say that yoga lessons/classes by the beach are nothing less than the therapy itself. Trust us it is no less magical than a yoga session on the banks of the holy river Ganga in Rishikesh. If you ask us, we prefer yoga sessions by the amazingly clear beaches of Varkala.

14) Golden Island & Ponnumthuruth Siva Temple

female travel partner in kerala

After the preserver, let us devote ourselves to the temple of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati on Golden Island. The Golden Island is surprisingly a wonderful location nestling just in the middle of the backwater lake. You can even avail yourself a short cruise across the island or just lose yourself among the spiritual aura beholding the bright hues of the Shiva-Parvati temple.

15) Varkala Helipad

female travel partner in kerala

A huge area is covered by the beautiful helipad located in Varkala just a few stretches away from the beach. It can be clearly noted the amount of greenery present around the helipad is pretty evident of how the beauty has been properly held in this place. It is because this place is not much trodden by the tourists. The helipad is also one of the best places to watch the sunset in Varkala and it is just a stone throw away from the cliff market.

P.S You can park your vehicles free of cost at the Helipad, it is used only for VIP movements which are thankfully not that frequent in this part of the world.

16) Kappil backwaters

female travel partner in kerala

With long coconut and palm trees growing on the golden beach, the backwater, on the other side just steals the attraction with one glance. You can witness the change in he's from blue to the tinge of green with the reflecting sunlight on the rippling water surface of the backwater lake.

17) Kayaking & Canoeing in backwaters of Kerala

female travel partner in kerala

An absolute boon for water sports lovers, Varkala presents you with the facility for Kayaking and canoeing in the backwater of Kerala. Grab your pair of slippers and the camera, because the stunning photographs with the bright blues, is something you would remind for the rest of your life!

Also, don't miss the green horizon the blues of the sky from the backwater blues!

18) Water sports like Paragliding, Banana boat ride & others

female travel partner in kerala

Can Fly adventures are one of the trustworthy operators for Paragliding in Varkala, they hail originally from Millau in France. We would recommend you contact them beforehand as Paragliding is more of a seasonal thing here as Varkala is still not very popular and sees relatively lesser footfall especially between April - September.

19) Tibetan Market

Now we have reached one of the most essential parts of any trip, SHOPPING! Of course, you are not going to be disappointed with the wide variety of things available at just your pocket pinch. Shop for yourself or people back at your home, you just can't rest your eyes on just one thing. From dresses, jewelry, cosmetics, totes, slippers, and a list of countless things to leave you flabbergasted!

20) The famous Varkala Cliff

female travel partner in kerala

Welcome to the famous geo-heritage site of Kerala, the Varkala Cliff. Spend your day soaking in the sun and your evening at the cafes, on the edges of the cliff, sipping on to your favorite coffee and enjoying the vibe around. Even for your late-night plans, you can dine in here with local delicacies and calling it a day with a lot of Instagrammable photos!

21) Munroe Island- Backwaters

female travel partner in kerala

Want a tour to the budget-friendly hidden Venice in India? Munroe Island is at your service! Roam around the place with a small canoe or a kayak with the natural and all-green backdrop of palm and other herbs and shrubs. Witness the diverse wildlife, birds along with the enriched flora and fauna reserved and untouched from the busy tourist engagements.

21) Café Hopping

female travel partner in kerala

If you are in Kerala, you can't miss the authentic taste of the coffee from homegrown and cultivated beans. A lot of local and small cafes are available apart from the franchise chains. With a pleasant ambiance and decent and comforting warm meals, you will surely enjoy your moment with a perfect cup of freshly brewed coffee!

Varkala is not a very huge place but in fact, a very small town which is mainly divided into three parts namely North Cliff, Middle cliff & South Cliff. There is a narrow pathway accessible only by foot stretching from Helipad to the black beach which is the heart of Varkala and also the most happening place with some amazing cafés, souvenir & cloth shops along with Kerala style massage centers.

How to get around:

On foot or walking remains my preferred way of exploring Varkala to experience the little unexplored gems which you tend to miss otherwise however Varkala is best explored on a rented scooty/motorbike which can be rented from various shops/hostels / local vendors ranging between INR 300 - INR 500 per day.

(On foot option is feasible only if you are staying in accommodation near the helipad or the cliff area otherwise a personal vehicle is recommended).

Other options are Tuk-Tuk/autos & taxis too.

If you have rented a car from Kochi / Thiruvananthapuram (Capital of Kerala) / Varkala you can park it for free on the helipad free of cost or your accommodation (if they provide a parking space).

Where to stay in Varkala

The most sought after accommodation in Varkala

While Varkala is not a place with fancy hotels & resorts like Oberoi, Marriott's & Hilton's of the world but there are few luxury resorts which you can consider for a laid-back luxurious vacation:

1) Gateway Selection - IHCL Varkala (Taj Group): The only globally renowned brand presence in Varkala as of now.

2) Trip is life: The most sought-after accommodation which can host only 4 adults at a time and comes along with an open-air bathroom. You will have to book this at least 10 - 15 days prior to your traveling dates. Highly recommended for a small girls group of 4 or fewer travelers. Did someone say bachelorette & honeymoon?

3) B'canti Beach Resort: Situated on the Odayam beach road, recently former actress and blogger Shehnaz stayed here.

Affordable Luxury:

This is probably the most popular category of stay which suits almost everybody because you get some good hotels with amazing views by compromising a little on some services. Confused? Find out yourself:

female travel partner in kerala

1) Inda Hotel

2) Miracle by the bay

4) Maathadil Villa & Cottages

5) Clafouti Beach Resort

6) Deshadan Beach Resort

This category is rather suitable for backpackers, students, and even tourists traveling on a shoestring budget. Varkala has fairly good options for budget travelers & most of the foreigners who come to Varkala prefer to stay like nomads in these budget accommodations because unlike us Indians they come to Varkala, fall in love with the slow life, and decide to halt here for months.

The only backpacker hostel in Varkala with AC dormatories

1) Zostel Varkala

2) Jicky's Nest

3) Mad About Coco

4) Piggy hostel Varkala (Short Giraffe Hostel - Old name)

5) Lost Hostel Varkala

Where to eat in Varkala

So we explored Varkala and ate at almost all the famous cages and restaurants, along with some lesser-known ones. Here are recommendations for all you solo travelers from Team Wander Womaniya:

1) True Thomas (South Indian & North Indian food)

2) Darjeeling Cafe (Cocktails & North Indian Food) P.S. do try their secret punch and let us know if they disclose the ingredients to you.

3) Juicy shack (South Indian & healthy juices)

4) God's own country Kitchen (Seafood)

5) Inda Cafe (All day breakfast & Pasta)

Let us know in comments what you think about this blog, if you want us to write a blog about any particular destination or have any suggestions on how we can make this better. Feel free to comment or reach out to us.

We at Wander Womaniya will keep organizing regular women only travel groups to Varkala and will keep on exploring more of Incredible India & the World for you!!

NEW DELHI (AP) — Millions of Indians began voting Friday in the second round of multi-phase national elections as Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought to galvanize voters with his assertive brand of Hindu nationalist politics.

People lined up outside polling stations as voting opened at 7 a.m. Turnout was expected to pick up as the day progresses.

The outcome of Friday’s voting will be crucial for Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, as the 88 constituencies up for grabs across 13 states include some of its strongholds in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Most polls predict a win for Modi and the BJP, which is up against a broad opposition alliance led by the Indian National Congress and powerful regional parties.

Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi is running in Wayanad constituency in southern Kerala state for a second time, after he was defeated in 2019 elections by Smriti Irani, a BJP leader, in the northern Indian city of Amethi — a traditional stronghold for the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Other prominent candidates in the second phase of voting include Shashi Tharoor of the Congress party, popular BJP Bollywood star Hema Malini and actor Arun Govil, who played the role of Hinduism’s revered Lord Ram in a 1987 television adaptation of the ancient epic Ramayana.

Prime Minister Modi urged people to vote in record numbers to strengthen democracy.

“I especially urge our young voters and women voters to turn out in great numbers. Your vote is your voice!” Modi said in a message on the social media platform X.

The BJP has already won one parliamentary seat from Surat in Gujarat state, where the Congress party candidate was disqualified Monday. Election officials said they found discrepancies in the signatures on the nomination and other candidates pulled out of the contest, leaving BJP nominee Mukesh Dalal as the winner by default.

Nearly 970 million voters — more than 10% of the world’s population — will elect 543 members to the lower house of Parliament for five years during the staggered election, which runs until June 1. The votes will be counted on June 4. There are a total of 28 states in India.

The turnout of the first phase of polling on April 19 was estimated around 62% of 166.3 million eligible voters. About 160 million are eligible to vote in the second phase.

By comparison, India’s 2019 national election registered the highest-ever voter turnout — 67.11% — in the history of Indian parliamentary elections. The turnout is expected to increase for five more rounds of voting.

Voters’ relative apathy has surprised some political analysts, but they say that the BJP remains a front-runner.

“You could argue that the listlessness is a consequence of a foregone conclusion,” said Pratap Bhanu Mehta, an Indian political scientist.

“But for Modi’s party which is expecting to win 400 of the 543 seats the joyous surge is missing,” he said in an article in the Indian Express daily.

Critics of the prime minister, an avowed Hindu nationalist, say India’s tradition of diversity and secularism has come under attack since the BPJ won power a decade ago. They accuse the party of fostering religious intolerance and sometimes even violence. The party denies the accusation and says its policies benefit all Indians.

Modi stirred a huge controversy over the weekend when he said that the Congress party, if voted to power, would distribute the country’s wealth among “infiltrators” and “those who have more children,” in an apparent reference to the Muslim community.

Hindus make up 80% of India’s 1.4 billion people, while Muslims account for 14% and Christians and Sikhs 2% each.

The Congress party leaders met with election officials and urged them to investigate whether Modi’s comments violated the body’s code of conduct that bars politicians from appealing to voters based on caste and religious feelings.

The BJP also filed a complaint against Congress’s Gandhi, accusing the opposition leader of falsely asserting that poverty was increasing and driving a wedge between the North and South of India based on language and region in order to disrupt the electoral environment.

The election authority recognized the complaints on Thursday and asked the presidents of the two parties to file their responses by Monday. The authority is expected to give its ruling next week.
