3 killed in Colorado off-roading tour after car falls over 100 feet off a cliff
Three people were killed during an off-roading tour when their car drifted off the edge of the road and fell over 100 feet off a cliff on Monday, according to Colorado State Patrol.
Diana Robles, 28, Ofelia Figueroa-Perez, 60, and their 72-year-old tour driver, Don Fehd, were traveling north on County Road 361 from the Yankee Boy Basin area in southwestern Colorado when their Jeep Gladiator drifted off the right edge of the road.
The vehicle then fell approximately 110 feet to the bottom before rolling down a rocky embankment for about 142 feet, Colorado State Patrol Spokesperson Gary Cutler told NBC News. The incident took place at some point between 11:00a.m. and 12:00p.m. on Monday, Cutler said.
Robles, Figueroa-Perez and Fehd all died at the scene.
"The crash is still under investigation at this time," said Cutler. "At this point there isn’t any one thing that has shown a cause for going off the roadway."
Robles and Figueroa-Perez, both from Yuma, Arizona, were taking the Colorado mountain tour on Monday morning during a visit to the state, according to police. A *spotfund fundraising campaign started by a family friend of Robles to raise money for funeral expenses identified Figueroa-Perez as her aunt.
Fehd, from Ouray, Colorado, was an employee at Colorado West Jeeps, according to officials. An employee for the company confirmed there was an accident on a trail earlier this week that killed a driver and two passengers, but would not give further comment.
Causes of death have not yet been determined for Robles, Figueroa-Perez and Fehd, Ouray County Coroner Colleen Hollenbeck told NBC News.

Three people were killed during an off-roading tour of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains when their Jeep plunged over a cliff on Monday, a report said.
Arizona tourists Diana Robles, 28, Ofelia Figueroa-Perez, 60, and hired driver Don Fehd, 72, were all killed when their 2022 Jeep Gladiator drifted off the edge of Ouray County Road 361 and landed hundreds of feet below, according to the Montrose Daily Press.
The vehicle first fell 100 feet to the bottom of a cliff, according to police and the outlet. It then rolled about 140 feet down a rocky embankment, ejecting Fehd, officials said. The bodies of the two sightseers were found in the car, which rested on its roof near the bank of a creek, police said.
Before the crash, Robles, a Yuma nurse, had reportedly just snapped a picture of the iconic Imogene Pass, a “thrilling” trail that is the second-highest drivable pass in Colorado, according to AllTrails .
Figueroa-Perez, Robles’ aunt, also worked as a nurse, according to a Facebook post from a relative of the victims.
“We know they are in the merciful hands of our Lord as they themselves being nurses had healing hands in every life they touched,” Diana Figueroa wrote .
Fehd worked at Colorado West Jeep Rentals and Tours, where he was known for his “quirky, genuine way” with his passengers, according to the Ouray County Plaindealer .
Monday’s accident marked the second deadly crash in the area in just a week. On Sept. 5, an Arizona man was killed and his wife was injured when their ATV rolled hundreds of feet near Imogene Pass, the Daily Press reported.

Jeep Gladiator Falls Off Cliff in Colorado During Jeep Tour, Three Killed
It’s Ouray County’s second fatal off-roading incident this month.

Two vacationers and a tour guide are dead after the 2022 Jeep Gladiator they were traveling in fell nearly 250 feet from a popular off-road trail near Imogene Pass in Colorado.
Montrose Press reports the incident occurred Monday on Ouray County Road 361 (also known as Camp Bird Road), en route from Yankee Boy Basin to Ouray. The location is a short distance from off-roading destination Imogene Pass , from which one of the Jeep's passengers had reportedly snapped a photo before the crash.
The Colorado State Patrol says it responded to a report of a crash at 12:32 p.m. and found a white Jeep hundreds of feet down from the road. The truck was believed to have slipped over the side of the trail, falling 100 feet and landing on its roof before rolling a further 140 feet down the embankment. The vehicle's driver was ejected, and his body was found near the banks of Canyon Creek. His passengers, a pair of Arizona tourists, were found dead inside the vehicle.
Recovery of the wrecked Jeep was completed Tuesday , though the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The video embedded below shows Camp Bird Road and how steep the drop-off is at points:
This incident reportedly marks the second fatal off-road crash on Ouray County trails this month. On Sept. 5 , a man from Mesa, Arizona died when his ATV tipped and rolled hundreds of feet down a trail near Imogene Pass, injuring his wife in the process. The region records a significant volume of off-roading incidents due to its popularity with the outdoor community, which visits the nearby town of Telluride and often drives the trails in the region. Their combination of tricky terrain and high traffic however has led the Sheriff of San Miguel County to advise drivers to stay off the nearby Black Bear Pass if they lack trail experience .

Three tourists died in Colorado 's San Juan Mountains after their tour Jeep rolled over a cliff, police said.
On Monday, Diana Robles, 28, Ofelia Figueroa-Perez, 60, and Don Fehd, 72 — who was hired to drive their Jeep — were all killed when the vehicle slid off the edge of a mountain road and fell hundreds of feet.
Investigators told the Montrose Daily Press that the 2022 Jeep Gladiator first fell approximately 100 feet to the foot of the cliff, and then began to roll down a 140 foot embankment. Mr Fehd was ejected from the vehicle during the roll.
The Jeep ultimately came to a stop on its roof near the bank of the creek. The bodies of the sightseers were found inside the vehicle.
Just before the crash, Ms Figueroa-Perez snapped a photo of the Imogene Pass, which is the second-highest drivable pass in Colorado. The group was travelling on Camp Bird Road, which, according to Dangerous Roads, is a "narrow, picturesque mountain road" that should not be driven unless one has "four-wheel drive and no fear of heights."
Ms Figueroa-Perez was Ms Robles’s aunt. Both women were nurses at the Yuma Regional Medical Centre in Yuma, Arizona. She was remembered by her family in a Facebook post after her death was announced.
“We know they are in the merciful hands of our Lord as they themselves being nurses had healing hands in every life they touched,” family member Diana Figueroa wrote.
The Ouray County Plaindealer spoke to Jeff Lindberg, the owner of West Colorado Jeep Rentals and Tours, which employed Mr Fehd. He said the driver was known for his "quirky, genuine way" with guests.
Police do not believe drugs, alcohol, weather conditions or speed were a factor in the crash, according to the incident report.
It was the second fatal accident in the region in a week, according to the Montrose Daily Press . Another Arizona resident was killed and his wife was injured when their vehicle rolled 600 feet down an embankment.
In that instance the driver, Tory Coonrod, 52, was driving with his wife across steep terrain when the trail ended and he found himself forced to turn around. As he was maneuvering, he felt the vehicle begin to tip, and he yelled for his wife to jump out of the Jeep. She was injured in her escape but managed to survive. Mr Coonrod did not.

Three die in Jeep rollover near Ouray
Three people died in a rollover in Ouray County on Monday during a commercial Jeep tour, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The crash occurred between 11 a.m. and noon on County Road 361, also known as the Camp Bird Road, during a tour by Colorado West Jeep Rentals and Tours of Ouray, said Sgt. Nathan Lyons. No other vehicle was involved.
According to the State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis, a 72-year-old man from Ouray was driving a 2022 Jeep Gladiator north toward Ouray with two female passengers from Arizona, one age 60 and one age 28.
The driver drifted off the right edge of the road 3.1 miles from Ouray and went off a cliff.
After hitting the ground, the Jeep rolled hundreds of feet down a rocky embankment and came to rest on its roof facing south near the bank of Canyon Creek.
During the rollover, the driver was ejected and came to rest along the rocky embankment, the State Patrol said. The two female occupants remained inside the vehicle. All three occupants died in the crash.
The cause is under investigation, and anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Colorado State Patrol.
The driver was on a booked tour as an employee of Colorado West Jeep Rentals and Tours, Lyons said Tuesday.
Alcohol, drugs, weather and speed were not suspected factors, Lewis said. The two passengers were wearing seat belts, and whether the driver was is unknown, Lewis said.
The names of the victims were not released pending notification of family members.
County Road 361 was closed Monday afternoon as a result of the crash to allow for emergency responders and the crash investigation, according to the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office.
It reopened at 8:51 p.m., then closed again at 6 a.m. Tuesday for vehicle recovery. It was reopened at 4:36 p.m. Tuesday.
A comment from Colorado West Jeep Rentals and Tours was not available Tuesday.

Three people have been killed after their Jeep plunged off a 100ft-high cliff during an off-roading tour.
The trio were viewing Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, in the US, when they careered off the high edge on Monday.
Those killed were a group from Arizona and included Diana Robles, 28 and Ofelia Figueroa-Perez, 60.
The aunt and niece died alongside the driver of the vehicle, 72-year-old Don Fehd.
It occurred on the edge of Ouray County Road 361 in Colorado, according to local reports from The Montrose Daily Press.
The fall saw the 2022 Jeep Gladiator fall over 100ft to the bottom of the cliff, before rolling another 140ft in another fall that saw driver Fehd trusted out of the car.
Two sightseers eventually came across the stricken vehicle, found upside down on its roof with Robles and Figueroa-Perez inside.
Mere moments before the crash, Robles had captured a picture of Imogene Pass, reported to be the second highest driving pass in the state.
A press release by the Colorado State Patrol said: "[The Jeep] drifted off the right edge of the road which was a cliff.
"The Jeep fell to the bottom of the cliff impacting the ground.
"After impacting the ground, it rolled down a rocky embankment coming to final rest on its roof facing south near the bank of Canyon Creek.
"During the rollover sequence, the driver was ejected and came to final rest along the rocky embankment.
"The other two occupants remained inside the vehicle. The cause of the crash is under investigation."
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but recovery of the vehicle and its passengers was completed on Tuesday.
A devastated family member, Diana Figueroa, wrote: "As a family we are with our great sorrow for the loss of two members of our family Ofelia Figueroa-Pérez and Diana Karina Robles.
"We're at a loss for words and can't believe. We as a family want to thank everyone who has shown any act of love, phone call, text, messenger, who have brought food, water, Thank you!"
"We know they are in God's merciful hands, because they as nurses had hands that healed every life they touched. When we make funeral plans we will let them know."
The incident is the second fatal off-road crash on an Ouray County trail in this month alone.
A man, also from Arizona, died on September 5 when his vehicle rolled off Imogene Pass.
A local report from the Ouray County Plaindealer said driver had a "quirky, genuine way with the visitors who climbed into his Jeep".
"He’d ask them where they were from. And then, before they could finish saying their hometown, he’d exclaim, 'I was from there!' Maybe he was."

Arizona nurse, aunt and driver killed after Jeep plunges off Colorado cliff during offroad trip
SAN JUAN, COLORADO: In an off-road accident, a group comprising three people died while touring Colorado’s San Juan Mountains in a Jeep on Monday, September 12, a report said. The cause of the crash is still under investigation as authorities piece together the remains of the vehicle.
The Montrose Daily Press stated that Arizona tourists Diana Robles, 28, Ofelia Figueroa-Perez, 60, and hired driver Don Fehd, 72, were all pronounced dead after their 2022 Jeep Gladiator drifted off the edge of Ouray County Road 361. Detailing the horrific car accident, the official said the vehicle first went down 100 feet to the bottom of a cliff, before rolling about 140 feet down a rocky embankment, throwing Fehd out of the jeep.

The official press statement from Colorado State Patrol read, “On Monday September 12, 2022 at approximately 1232 hours the Colorado State Patrol responded to a single vehicle rollover crash on County Road 361 (Camp Bird Road) near milepost 3.1 in Ouray County. The involved vehicle was a white 2022 Jeep Gladiator. All three occupants of the Jeep were killed in the crash.” It added, “The Jeep was traveling north on County Road 361 (Camp Bird Road) driving towards Ouray from the Yankee Boy Basin area. It drifted off the right edge of the road which was a cliff. The Jeep fell to the bottom of the cliff impacting the ground. After impacting the ground, it rolled down a rocky embankment coming to final rest on its roof facing south near the bank of Canyon Creek. During the rollover sequence, the driver was ejected and came to final rest along the rocky embankment. The other two occupants remained inside the vehicle. The cause of the crash is under investigation.” According to AllTrails, just minutes before the crash, Robles, who worked as a nurse in Yuma, had taken a photo of the iconic Imogene Pass, which is also the second highest drivable pass in entire Colorado. Her aunt, Figueroa-Perez, also served as a nurse, as per a Facebook post shared by the victim’s relative.
“We know they are in the merciful hands of our Lord as they being nurses had healing hands in every life they touched,” it read. As per The Ouray County Plaindealer, the driver of the vehicle, Fehd, worked at Colorado West Jeep Rentals and Tours and was recognized for his “quirky, genuine way” with his passengers.
As reported by KYMA , Cathleen Wolff, Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) Chaplain and Spiritual Care Manager, said, “Our YRMC family is in shock and colleagues are deeply grieving the sudden loss. Losing two beautiful caregivers is a tremendous loss. The pain we feel as an organization is immeasurable.” This was the second fatal crash in the region within a week. An Arizona man died and his wife suffered serious injuries after an ATV rolled hundreds of feet around Imogene Pass, claimed the Daily Press.

Three dead after Jeep falls off Colorado cliff during off-roading tour
It's the second deadly accident in the area in a week.
Niamh Spence
Reports have confirmed three people have died after a Jeep plunged over a cliff in Colorado ’s San Juan Mountains on Monday.
The Montrose Daily Press has confirmed the victims as Arizona tourists Diana Robles, 28; Ofelia Figueroa-Perez, 60; and hired driver Don Fehd, 72.
Reports from police who attended the scene state the vehicle first plummeted 100 feet to the bottom of a cliff, before rolling about 140 feet down a rocky embankment, ejecting the driver. The bodies of the two sightseers were found in the car, which rested on its roof near the bank of a creek.
Messages for the victims have already begun rolling in. A report from The Montrose Daily Press shared a message for the two sightseers: "We know they are in the merciful hands of our Lord as they themselves being nurses had healing hands in every life they touched."
Driver Fehd was described by colleagues at Colorado West Jeep Rentals and Tours, as having a 'quirky, genuine way' with his passengers, according to The Ouray County Plaindealer.
Monday’s accident marked the second deadly crash in the area in seven days. Last week, an Arizona man was killed and his wife was injured when their ATV rolled hundreds of feet.
It's not just the roads that are considered deadly either. Reports have also been confirmed that this month three climbers who attempted to scale the mountain's rocky face have also lost their lives.
This month, 22-year-old Maya Humeau was confirmed as the third person to lose her life in that month alone while attempting to climb dangerous routes in the Colorado mountains.
The Black Wall climbing area north of Mount Evans has become a magnet for climbers wanting to push their skills, but it's also become deadly as it features 'long, committing' routes that are best for experienced climbers, according to Mountain Project.
Humeau is the third deadly report and comes just days after another climber plunged to his death from a nearby Colorado peak.
The fallen hiker was killed after falling several hundred feet during a descent from Blanca Peak, in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range in southern Colorado. And this accident came days after yet another experienced climber died on Aspen-area Capitol Peak whilst horrified onlookers watched.
Officials said: "Capitol Peak is considered one of Colorado’s most difficult mountains to climb with extreme exposure and loose, crumbling rock."
Officials reminded hikers of the dangers of the Elk Mountains, the high rugged range in the Rocky Mountains.
Officials also added: "The Elk Mountains are treacherous and that the loose, rotting terrain can lead to unstable conditions that can cause serious injuries or death."

A victim's haunting final photo has been revealed after the nurse and two others were killed when their Jeep plunged off 100 feet cliff during a mountain tour in Colorado.
Diana Robles, 28, her aunt Ofelia Figueroa-Perez, 60, and their hired driver Don Fehd, 72, were all killed in the tragic accident after their 2022 Jeep Gladiator slid off a dangerous road on September 12.
The young nurse's last know picture was allegedly taken in a mountain gondola before the accident. Wearing a grey turtle neck, Diana smiled back at the camera.
The young nurse then sent a photo to her friends. When she did not reply to their messages back, they panicked. After scouring social media, they learned about the fatal accident.
Colorado 's Ouray County Road 361, also known as Camp Bird Road, is well-known for its perilousness. It is described as an unpaved, narrow and picturesque mountain road - and one of the most dangerous roads in the U.S.
The trio was heading towards Ouray when the vehicle drifted off the road, plunged 100 feet to the bottom and rolled 140ft down a rocky mound, according to Colorado State Patrol.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) — More than a dozen people suffered mostly minor injuries when a tram used for tours crashed into a railing at Universal Studios Hollywood near Los Angeles, authorities and the company said.
Los Angeles County Fire Department units responded shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday to the theme park in Universal City, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of downtown LA, the agency said in a social media post.
The California Highway Patrol said that while the tram was negotiating a turn, its last car collided with a metal guardrail, “causing it to tilt and eject multiple passengers.”
The fire department said 15 people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The highway patrol’s statement on Sunday said some of the injuries were moderate, but didn’t specify a number.
Universal Studios Hollywood said in a statement Sunday afternoon that tours have resumed with a modified route.
“Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor. We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority,” the statement said.
The highway patrol, which is leading the investigation, said alcohol and drugs were not considered a factor.
The tram circuit, called the World-Famous Studio Tour, offers a glimpse behind the scenes of Universal movies including “Jaws” and Jordan Peele’s “Nope.” The theme park will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tour starting Friday.
