Dead Sea , Masada

Masada and dead sea trip, our pickup starts from approximately 6 am, tour overview, masada and dead sea trip:.

This day tour to the ancient fortress of Masada takes you to the site of one of the most interesting historical stories in the region. Join us and find  yourself in the very location where the heroism seen by the last stronghold in the Jewish rebellion against the Romans took place. The drama of Masada is then followed by an afternoon of relaxation at the therapeutic Dead Sea; an idyllic end to any sightseeing day! Our Masada and Dead Sea trip leaves from Jerusalem. Together, we descend all the way through the Judean Desert down to below sea level.

On the way you will see the Inn of the Good Samaritan. We stop to look out across the desert as we pass the point marking “sea level”.

The ancient city of Jericho can be seen in the distance where Joshua’s troops caused the walls to fall (Joshua 6) and where Jesus healed the blind (Mark 10:46-52).

Arriving at Masada, we ascend the mountain by cable car, to tour the 2000-year old palace built by King Herod. Herod built a swimming pool, water cisterns, two palaces, store rooms and even a synagogue.

The Jews came here to defy the Romans, and it was in this  remote spot they they committed mass suicide, after a long and drawn-out siege by the Roman army. Our guides will take you through the important archeological sites and bring this dramatic historical moment to life.

We leave Masada and head out to the Dead Sea. The tour concludes with time to enjoy basking in the sun at the beach or floating in the mineral-rich Dead Sea, located at the lowest place on earth (400m below sea level).

You will also have the opportunity to cover yourself from head to toe in the natural Dead Sea mud. This mud’s unique therapeutic qualities will leave your skin feeling soft and fresh. And don’t worry if you don’t know how to swim, the high salt content will keep you afloat!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Dead Sea is called “dead” because of its remarkably high salt concentration, making it inhospitable for most forms of marine life. The water of the Dead Sea contains a salinity level that is significantly higher than that of regular seawater, reaching around 34% salinity. Salinity is the saltiness, or amount of salt dissolved in a body of water. This high salt content, combined with other minerals, creates an environment where aquatic organisms cannot survive. Hence how the Dead Sea is often referred to as “dead”. It lacks the usual vibrant marine ecosystem found in other bodies of water. Despite its name, however, the Dead Sea is renowned for its therapeutic properties and is a popular destination for health and wellness tourism.

Yes! You can indeed float in the Dead Sea. Due to its extraordinarily high salt concentration, the water of the Dead Sea has a greater density than the human body. This high density provides incredible buoyancy, making it effortless for individuals to float on the surface of the water. Whether you are a skilled swimmer or not, the high salt content of the Dead Sea allows you to effortlessly experience the unique sensation of buoyancy and float atop the water’s surface. However, as our guides on the dead sea tour will likely advise, it is recommended to avoid getting the water in your eyes or mouth, as it can cause discomfort because of the high salt content.

Swimming in the Dead Sea is a unique experience, but it is important to note that it comes with some precautions. While floating on the surface is safe and enjoyable, swimming in the traditional sense is not recommended. The high salt concentration in the water can cause discomfort if it enters your eyes, mouth, or any open wounds. Additionally, the buoyancy of the water makes it challenging to swim in a typical manner. It is advisable to avoid submerging your face in the water and to be cautious while moving around to prevent accidental splashing. Taking these precautions into consideration, floating and enjoying the therapeutic qualities of the Dead Sea is a once in a lifetime opportunity. So, book your Masada and Dead Sea trip today.

Yes, it is possible to visit the Dead Sea on a day trip from nearby cities. The Dead Sea is located in close proximity to several major cities in the region, such as Amman (Jordan), Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv (Israel). Many of our Israel day tours offer day trips to the Dead Sea, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience its unique features and therapeutic properties. It is an especially popular location for day trips from Jerusalem. These day trips, like the one featured on this page, include transportation, access to beach resorts or designated areas for swimming, floating, and mud baths, and the chance to enjoy the natural beauty and mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea. Whether you are staying in Jordan or Israel, a day trip to the Dead Sea allows you to make the most of your time and explore this remarkable natural wonder.

You can spend as much time as you want at the Dead Sea. Fully relaxing and taking in its miraculous nature is the whole point! It is common to combine your visit to the Dead Sea with Masada, as you’re already so close, and doing so will ensure that you  truly get the most out of your Dead Sea trip.

  • Maurice L 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Just ok, not a highlight of our stay It was the 2. Tourist Israel Tour we’v booked and ist was just ok. In Nazareth we spend to much time in a overpriced Souvenirshop, almost more time than in the church. Than the plans were changed because of the early closing of Yardenit and the busdriver was in a rush to bring the tour to the Jordan River. This place was actually very cool and touching. After the Jordan River was Lunchtime in the so called “place to be” which sadly was just a tourist trapp …. Highly overpriced (27€) for 2 sticks minced meat less than 100 g and oily unfried fries, or a deepfried skinny fish #notworthanymoney After this downer we were actually done . The church of multiplication was a quick stop and drop off, in kaphernaum we had a nice spot at the Kinneret. The guide Dan was ok, we just missed some beyond information not just what we could read at the places by ourselves 🤷‍♂️ On the way back the air conditioning in the bus was not working well and the radio was running all the time wich left not space to relax Read more Written 25 April 2023
  • matta613 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good guide, but watch out for the lunch trap The bus service and our guide Yael were both terrific and very welcoming. Most of the sites on the tour were souvenir shops, and we were taken to a restaurant for lunch where we were given only two options (chicken or fish) and we had no idea what price the food was. It turned out to be $25 US per person, which was extremely expensive for what was served. This put everyone in a pretty poor mood for the rest of the tour. Highlights were the village at Copernaeum and the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth. Read more Written 7 January 2023

  • Tom K 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Masada is a must Four of us went on shabbat. Had our own small van since no one else had signed up. Masada is incredible, not to be missed. Also enjoyed En Gedi - good hike with several waterfalls. Would recommend a tour with 2 hrs at En Gedi since you need that to do a decent hike. Our driver spoke limited English and there was some confusion about the "included at no charge" visit to the Dead Sea after En Gedi. We were first taken to a shopping area which wanted to charge us about $25 each and apparently if we listened to the sales pitch we'd get our money back. We told them we didn't want to do this, showed the itinerary that said "Dead Sea visit - no charge". Eventually, after a lot of phone calls presumably back to the main office, we were taken to another entrance to the Dead Sea beach and were not charged. Strange and confusing. Even though, the admission charges were included in the tour price. Guide Sameer insisted us to visit a local souvenir shop and lied about the timing of Church of Nativity. • FamilyFromNewYork 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Eliaa Tours Driver Abandoned Vehicle and Group Several Times - Very Bad Experience There was no "Tour Guide For All The Tour" as advertised on Viator materials. There was only a "Driver", who was more concerned about his frequent cigarette breaks and constantly on his smartphone, even when driving at high speeds. Very scary drive the whole torturous day with this driver, who emphasized he was not a "tour guide". No friendly greeting, get in the van and wait - way past the scheduled start time. Driver belatedly said two more guests were coming and were delayed on highway. So he held up the whole group for that - which was unreasonable. Worse of all during this long, unexplained wait the driver disappeared for big stretches of time. At one point the tour bus behind us needed to get out (on time) and could not move because the Eliaatours van was blocking - with our driver nowhere to be found. The keys were in the ignition and the door unlocked, so finally an angry person from the tour behind us jumped into the Eliaatours van and just moved it, with all of us inside. This was very dangerous - we had no idea who this mad guy was or what he was going to do. The Eliaatours driver finally wandered back about 10 minutes later and had no clue - or concern. We left about one hour late from the advertised start time. The driver adjusted his schedule by chopping off an hour of our visit at Ein Gedi - very unfair and disappointing. Dead Sea stop at the end was very worth experiencing - but the actual location on this tour is a run down tourist trap of an old beachside bar and mostly a store pushing Dead Sea off-brand products. The bit that was enjoyable was completely ruined by the Eliaatours driver advising, again belatedly, that the "van" was now broke down and he was waiting for a replacement vehicle to arrive. This did not seem to ring true to anybody on our tour as the vehicle was parked and running just fine when everybody got off. The driver continued to make up excuses and stories as it got later and later - it seemed to the group that probably the van was sent out on some other job while we had our two hours at the beach and it got delayed - but driver insisted it was beyond his control or knowledge. Finally a bus arrived from another company, almost full, with many other obvioulsy unhappy tourists, which took us back to Jerusalem very, very late. This late substitute bus delivered us several blocks from the original pick up spot, instead of where advertised, which was very unhelpful. We saw several people near tears by the end of this unpleasant drive back. We followed up with Eliaatours and they offered the same excuses as their unfriendly driver and finally a begrudging 10% refund. They ruined an entire day of our limited time in Israel. Visitors should definitely visit Masada, Ein Gedi and the Dead Sea - but avoid Eliaa Tours and Viator - who both had no concern for the safety or comfort of their paying customers. • Alwaysfreshpolo 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best tour of over 40 states visited I have to be honest I was a bit leary of purchasing after some of the reviews, but after experiencing it myself I really enjoyed this trip and is surely my best of over 40 states visited in my life. My wife and i are both active duty military so we both travel out of the country regularly. We would recommend Fun times because of a few factors their driver (Rifat) was so knowledgeable and if you're from the states will appreciate his nature. Also their van wasnt a tour bus which was also amazing because we only had to worry about and wait on a total of 8 people so we could see things and make it to checkpoints in enough time to enjoy the stations attractions. We were able to spend 2 hrs at Masada, 1 hr at Eni Gedi and 2 hrs at the Dead sea which is plenty trust me. Starting with Masada we recommend taking the cable cart up the mountain, but hiking back down Masada gives yourself an hr you will only need about 35-45 minutes but pictures and rest breaks are recommended. Eni Gedi was also lovely with small waterfalls throughout the reserve and animals throughout as well although there was a kid field trip and they were everywhere being kids. The pinnacle of the entire trip surely was the dead sea which in December the air was about 70 degrees farenheit but I could not resist getting inside and I am so glad that I did. Here are a few pictures. Read more Written 18 December 2019
  • Kuedee 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Impressive tour Petra ist very impressive, but to get there is a looong way from Tel Aviv. The trip was very well organized. The early pick up unfortunately wasn‘t at our hotel so we had to arrange the way to the meeting point by our own. The driver was on time and the car was as we execepted. On the way we made several stopps what was good. Once arrived at Petra we had not that much time for us. At the end we needed to hurry to get back to the bus. Our advice ask for a breakfast package in your hotel, then you are fine for your trip. Overall it‘s an expensive trip but it‘s absolutely worth it. Read more Written 7 December 2019

  • highimpactuk 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Makes the most of one day This is a nice tour to do for those who are short of time but still want to see key sites in Israel. It looks like a few companies band together to organise these so ultimately it does not matter which tour company you use, chances are you'll probably end up on the same coach. Our advice: go for the cheapest. The day itself is very fluid and could be Jerusalem or Bethlehem first. There is a bit of 'winging it' on the day that goes on. We started out in Bethlehem, were dropped off in Jerusalem and finished up with the rest of the tour group (who went to Jericho) at the Dead sea. The best part of the day was the Jerusalem walking tour - with Yana - who did a great job exploring the best of Jerusalem in between catching up, it seems, with half the city. This part of the tour was educational, informative and detailed. Tour guides do need to take care that they have all members of the group when they move on as a a few members were missed a few times and it was the group that seemed more particular not to leave anyone behind rather than the guides. This is where Yana stood apart from the others. She would count in and out. All in all, a bit frenetic - but a decent tour all the same. Read more Written 21 October 2019

Tour Overview

jerusalem masada dead sea tour

This tour heads to southern Israel through the Judean Hills and past the Inn of the Good Samaritan. We pause at sea level for an unforgettable photo-op then continue our descent further and further down beneath sea level towards the iconic Dead Sea. Our first stop is at Masada where we take a cable car to the plateau summit and tour the remains of Herod’s 2,055 year old palace fortress. We see remarkable structures including palaces and a bathhouse. From Masada the tour takes you past the desert oasis of Ein Gedi and Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. We spend the rest of the day relaxing on one of the Dead Sea beaches. You can float in the salty-water that is 8.6 times more saline than the ocean creating natural buoyance. Use the Dead Sea mud as a natural skin mask and soak up the glorious Dead Sea sun.

Sites During the Tour

Highlights - masada day tour, availability, pickup places and prices, what to expect - masada day tour.

We start this exciting Masada and Dead Sea tour traveling south of Jerusalem through the Judean Hills. The Masada tour passes the Inn of the Good Samaritan and pauses by the sign indicating sea level. From that point, the tour descends beneath sea level to the Dead Sea at the lowest point on the planet. The tour travels along the edge of the Dead Sea where the turquoise water is lined with a white salt crust.

Our first stop on this tour is Masada, a “mesa” or flat-topped rock outcrop rising 450m from the desert plains. We take a cable car to the plateau summit of Masada where there are breathtaking views of the Dead Sea.  Thanks to the dry climate and remote location the structures have been well preserved. About 100 years later during the First Jewish–Roman War (66–73 CE), a group of Jewish zealots took refuge on Masada. They held off the Romans for several months until the Romans built an earthen ramp to scale the steep cliffs. When Roman troops reached the plateau they found that all of the 960 Jews had killed themselves rather than be captured and forced to forsake their God. This event in Jewish history has made Masada a symbol of Jewish determination not to relinquish their independence. The tour leaves Masada and takes you to the nearby Dead Sea past Ein Gedi and Qumran, the site of the Dead Sea Scroll discovery. If time permits, we will stop for refreshments at the Dead Sea Mineral Cosmetic factory. Our final stop on this tour is the Dead Sea where you can relax on the beach and unwind. Enjoy the natural health benefits of the Dead Sea environment including the salt-rich water, oxygen-rich air, and mineral-rich black mud that you can use as a natural skin mask. Don’t leave before you have a shot of yourself floating in the Dead Sea!

A day tour is a regular tour that we operate on specific weekdays. Tours depart from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Herzliya and Netanya. You have the option to upgrade your tour and ensure for yourself a place in a small group (up to 19 people). The tour duration from pickup time is approximately 10 hours. You will be picked up from your hotel, and after the tour, you will be returned to your hotel.

Almost all of our daily tours are operated primarily in English, in addition to a second language:  Or Spanish, or Russian, or German and or French. You can choose the preferred language of the tour when booking. You can view the tour schedule, as well as the second language schedule in order to make your best suited choice.

When booking your tour, you will need to mark which language you’d like the tour to be in. Note that for certain tours in certain languages, the price may be higher.

A regular group travels in a coach that comfortably transports up to 45 people. A small group travels in a minivan that seats 22 people. Other than that, the tours are identical.

Our tours leave from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Netanya and Herzliya. We pick up our travelers from most of the hotels in these cities. If you are staying at a private residence address, please choose the closest pick up hotel to your apartment or contact our office to be advised where to wait.
