Private Charter Boat Tours Lady Musgrave Island

We begin our private charter snorkel tour from the Seventeen Seventy Marina just outside Agnes Water based around the tides.

Our snorkel tours comprise of a 9 hour day and begin from either 7am to 4.00pm or 6am to 3pm (tide dependant)

It takes 2 hours steaming time to reach Lady Musgrave Island and along the way you will see the beautiful coastal views of Australia and the marine life on the Great Barrier Reef.

Once we reach Lady Musgrave Island our private charter guests have 5 hours to snorkel the 3000 acres of lagoon surrounding the island and also enjoying a guided 40 minute to 1 hour walk around Lady Musgrave Island to learn and explore about its history and to see the wildlife and the famous attractions.

Lady Musgrave Island Tours - The Marine Life

The fertile waters of the Southern Great Barrier Reef are very well known for some of the most spectacular marine life that call this region home all year round such as the graceful Manta Ray . These fish can live up to an impressive 50 years of age and each one of them has it's own identity with spots on its underbelly just like we humans have our own unique fingerprints.

Humpback Whales also grace these waters on their annual migratory tour northwards from Antarctica to the warmer and safe waters of the Great Barrier Reef to calve. You can see the Humpback Whales during the months of June to the middle/end of September.

There is a major breeding population of green sea turtles and loggerhead turtles that live and nest on Lady Musgrave all year round.

Whilst your head is underwater and seeing all the lovely varieties of coral you will see some local residents such as starfish, lots of sea turtles, parrot fish or tusk fish, snappers, clown fish, black tip reef sharks and so so much more.

On the departure from 1770 we often see pods of whales scouring the Great Barrier Reef for food and they sometimes come alongside the boat and ride the bow.

Lady Musgrave Island Tours - The Lagoon Coral

Lady Musgrave Island snorkeling is some of the best you will ever do on the Great Barrier Reef. These southern waters are so rich and fertile with a huge variety of hard and soft corals that attract the amazing marine life that call these waters home.

As you are snorkeling along the 3000 acre lagoon surrounding Lady Musgrave Island you will see Brain coral, Staghorn coral, Fan corals, Branching corals, Plate coral, Boulder coral and soft corals.

  • A_TAdvisor_Member 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles The trip was ok at best All seemed rather disorganised and rushed. Started with inefficient check in: long, long queue. Commentary was inaudible - could not hear anything. Sitting upstairs we were not aware food had been served downstairs. Drinking water dispenser was often empty as was the hot water flask. The island tour was very rushed and did not allow time to take photos. Scuba diving was not offered/available. Only one very tiny platform available for entering sea for snorkelling which meant a long queue - this prevented the less able or extremely anxious to have the time they needed. Sadly, this spoiled what should have been a memorable experience / bucket list. Full marks for attention to health and safety. Crew were very friendly. Whilst we understand the need to watch tide times - we were not out for 9 hours. Read more Written 4 January 2024
  • Steven D 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent Musgrave Small group and intimate experience made for a memorable day. They had us swimming straight out from the back of the boat to coral, fish and turtles. The staff were attentive and welcoming. The food was good and plenty of it. The glass bottom boat was used to transport us to the island for a guided walk, on the way back to the main boat we travelled over coral and were educated on the size, colour and age of the coral. Staff were happy to answer questions about the reef. It was obvious the staff worked well together as a team which made the day very enjoyable. Read more Written 21 November 2023
  • nickiwi14 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Fun day to Lady Musgrave A great day out. The boat trip was a little longer than anticipated at 2 hours. Snorkeling was a hit with us all, the water was so clear and the marine life was amazing. The guide on the island talked to the history of how it was formed and was very informative of the bird life. We were lucky enough to see turtles and learn about the coral whilst on the glass bottom boat. A great experience Read more Written 23 September 2023

  • Tourist35714396101 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful place, don't miss it My husband and I travelled to Lady Musgrave island on 9th October and we were lucky enough to book just after the school holidays and there was only about 45 passengers on board. The crew were awesome especially Barry the birthday boy and Sugar. We enjoyed the walk over the island with Sugar and the glass bottom boat with Barry. The water was so beautiful and clear and the weather divine. Snorkeling was brilliant, so many fish and turtles. Read more Written 19 October 2022
  • DroopDraws 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Perfect Day on the Reef This was our second time doing this tour. There were only 45 passengers aboard which made the trip feel more relaxed than when the boat is full, obviously we had no complaints about how the tour on a full boat was run though. We again chose to snorkle for the whole day rather than do the island walk & glass bottom boat (sorry again Barry, maybe next time?) Whilst all the other passengers were doing the island visit we had the snorkel area to ourselves which was just perfect. All the crew were happy & friendly & made for a fun day. Food was plentiful as well as being fresh & tasty. We got to see Dolphins on the way out many many fish whilst snorkelling & just as we were about to go back a Turtle decided to stop off for a quick clean & then let us follow her around the cleaning station before disappearing into the Coral. All in all another perfect day spent with 1770 Reef. Read more Written 15 October 2022
  • K2862PDdanh 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best day spent on the water Totally awesome. Very professional, fun and super friendly tour. All the crew put in so much effort making a great day, we couldn't have been looked after better. From tea and coffee, to snorkel tips and melon slices on the way back. All so knowledgeable about the wildlife etc and genuinely care about the reef. Could not recommend highly enough! Thanks 1770 reef crew! Read more Written 14 October 2022
  • BrookAndo 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Lady Musgrave Tour With the entire towns power being out to begin the day, they did well to get us off with only a 10 minute delay despite the pumps not working properly. The day out these guys provide is extremely enjoyable. The snorkelling is incredible, with accessible bommies straight off the boat for those uncomfortable with straying too far, but a mentionable distance to explore as well. The island tour is a nice experience to relax and learn more about the local bird species. And the glass bottom boat ride was beautiful, the guide knows his stuff too (snapped the pictures of the turtle on it). With drink options (both warm and cold), some nice food and lovely staff, couldn’t recommend a better tour! They did great considering the cloudy conditions we were in. Thank you all! • 587charmainew 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome day on the reef! Wow - such an awesome day at Lady Musgrave island with Isaac and the crew on 1770Reef! Isaac made us feel welcome and did a great job as skipper. All the staff were super friendly, helpful and fun. Barry the glass bottom boat driver was a wealth of knowledge about the fish and habitat. We saw a turtle and some cool fish and reef under the glass bottom boat. We had a lovely tour of the island and found out about the quirky local bird life (great work staffer!) The snorkelling was amazing - we saw rainbow parrot fish, a groper, turtles, a reef shark, and colourful coral bombies. Perfect weather, an incredible day we will never forget. Is the Great Barrier Reef Dead?

NO the Great Barrier Reef is not dead. While areas have been affected by weather and people, there are some amazingly healthy areas of Great Barrier Reef. South of Mackay and accessed from Town of 1770, Agnes Water and Bundaberg, the thriving Southern Great Barrier Reef islands of Lady Elliot, Lady Musgrave & Heron are the healthiest areas you will visit. Scroll down for the 2022 Aerial Survey of the reef – you will see the southern Great Barrier Reef is very healthy, so is the remote northern reef, about 10 hours drive north of Cairns LADY ELLIOT ISLAND https://www.discover1770.com.au/lady-elliott-island-day-trips/ LADY MUSGRAVE ISLAND https://www.discover1770.com.au/lady-musgrave-island-reef-cruises/ HERON ISLAND SPECIALS https://www.discover1770.com.au/heron-island-holiday-packages/

A map showing coral bleaching.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority chief scientist David Wachenfeld said the good news is that early signs suggest a low mortality rate.”Bleaching is a stress response but bleached coral is still alive and under the right conditions it can recover and continue to live,” he said. Did you know that the colour of coral is determined by the type of algae that grows on it? Coral isn’t colourful—the algae is! The coral and the algae live in a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship. The algae use photosynthesis to produce nutrients, which the coral consumes. The coral in turn produces waste, which the algae consume as a nutrient.

This relationship keeps the nutrients in recycling loop rather than drifting away in ocean currents and can greatly increase the coral’s food supply. If only we humans were that clever with our recycling!

Even more noteworthy is the recent discovery that global warming seems to be killing the algae and the death of the algae is in turn causing the coral to starve to death.

Now, I worked as a SCUBA Instructor on the GBR for almost a decade and I did not know that but the Glenn conducts the most awesomely informative Glass Bottom Boat trip this side of everywhere!

Sabrina’s Island walk was just as interesting as the Glass Bottom Boat. The last conversation I expected to find myself in was one about the “Wood Wide Web”. No, we were not talking about the internet, we’re talking about mycelium—mushroom roots. Actually mycelium is not really root it’s actually part of the body of the mushroom and is more accurately called a mushroom thread. Scientists are now certain that these threads act as a kind of underground internet, linking the roots of different plants.

That tree in your garden is probably hooked up to a bush several metres away, thanks to mycelia and they’re chatting away daily about conditions in your garden!

Wow what a morning!

I didn’t think I could top that but then I swam alongside the biggest old man turtle that I had ever seen and totally forgot how cool my morning had been!

The afternoon was topped off by scones, jam and cream with a Devonshire Tea.

I love Lady Musgrave Island—what a great day out on the reef!

We did this tour in April and we loved it so mucb. Really good arrangement. We took a short guided tour on Lady Musgrave island and did snorkeling. Saw at least 7 turtles and lots of corals and fish. It's super worth doing it. Will definitely recommend to anyone who's exploring 1770.

From Bundaberg: Barrier Reef & Lady Musgrave Island Day Tour

As a part of Capricornia Cays National Park, there is  camping on the island  for most of the year.

Lady Musgrave Island cruises are one of the best ways to pack in as much action as possible into a day trip to the island. Cruise boats moor alongside afloating pontoon known as ‘Reef Santuary’, a stone’s throw from the island. Cruises include such great activities as snorkelling in the lagoon, glass-bottom boat trips, guided walks, turtle and manta ray discovery, reef fishing and much more.

Playing host to an awesome variety of birdlife is a central forest of Pisonia trees, Lady Musgrave Island’s primary vegetation, with She-Oaks and Pandanus trees also featuring prominently in the island’s makeup.

White-capped Noddy Terns can be found nesting in the Pisonia Trees while the Silver Gulls, Bridled Terns, and Black-naped Terns nest nearer the beach on more open ground areas. Wedge-tailed shearwaters (Mutton Birds) also call the interior of the island home during the summer months, nesting in burrows.

Wading birds can be seen foraging on the reef from September to March. These migratory shorebirds include Ruddy Turnstones, Mongolian Plovers, Bar-tailed Godwits, Whimbrels, and Grey-tailed Tattlers to name but a few.

Most notable of the non-birdlife are the Green and Loggerhead turtles, which nest on Lady Musgrave Island between November and February. The island is closed to campers from February to March to protect turtle hatchlings.

Leopard sharks and Whitetip Reef sharks hunt in the shallows around the island but aren’t a danger to humans.

Snorkelling enthusiasts will find Lady Musgrave Island one of the most rewarding destinations in the Great Barrier Reef, with a diverse variety of fish and coral species creating the perfect underwater setting.
