The Midnight is an American synthwave band originating from Los Angeles, CA, composed of producer Tim McEwan and vocalist/guitarist Tyler Lyle. For live performances, various setups have been used by the band. Lyle stated that the Spring 2019 tour utilized an Ableton rig, with McEwan using an SPD SX sampling pad and MIDI controller. Lyle ran his guitars through a Kemper profiling amp, and he also used an OP1 for certain synth moments and pads.

THE CULT Announces June/July 2023 European Tour

Supporting the global release of their critically acclaimed album "Under The Midnight Sun" , in 2023 THE CULT will connect with European fans via a major summer tour with a series of headlining shows and major festival appearances kicking off in Brussels, Belgium on June 14. Accompanying the tour announcement is the release of THE CULT 's fiery, expressionistic new video for "Vendetta X" , the third single from "Under The Midnight Sun" . The song's stylized cinematic reimagining was directed by the band's longtime collaborator Juan Azulay (known for his powerful imagery created with ground-breaking artists spanning SIGUR RÓS to Lydia Lunch ). The video is available to watch below.

THE CULT European tour dates:

June 14 - Ancienne Belgique - Brussels, BE June 15 - LKA Longhorn - Stuttgart, DE June 21 - La Riviera - Madrid, ES June 22 - Razzmatazz - Barceona, ES June 23 - BBK Bilbao Music Legends Festival - Bilbao, ES June 25 - Les Docks - Lausanne, Switzerland June 27 - Budapest Park - Budapest, HU June 29 - Arsenal Fest - Kragujevac, RS June 30 - SRC Salaata - Zagreb, HR July 01 - Pordenone Blues Festival - Pordenone, IT July 04 - Cardiff Castle - Cardiff, UK July 05 - Halifax Piece Hall - Halifax, UK July 06 - Scarborough Open Air Theatre - Scarborough, UK

In a recent interview with Germany's Rock Antenne , THE CULT frontman Ian Astbury was full of praise for "Under The Midnight Sun" , calling it "essential." He clarified: "If you're a fan of rock music, our new record's essential… I don't think there's any recent releases of rock music that come close to 'Under The Midnight Sun' . And to say that, it may sound like an arrogant statement, but I'm tired of this bullshit. Stop it. Stop phoning it in. Stop exploiting your fans. Stop patronizing your fans. And stop calling them fans. They're your benefactors. Our audience are our benefactors."

Astbury continued: "I have such incredible gratitude and respect to people who would actually pay their hard-earned money to walk through a door, buy a record, come to a show, buy a t-shirt. Are you kidding? I was one; I am one. I appreciate that. I appreciate them. And that's why we made this record, because we wanted it to be the best of the best of the best. It's a gift. Yeah, you've gotta pay for it. But I'm sorry, that's… it's society."

"Under The Midnight Sun" arrived in October via Black Hill Records . The LP was produced by Tom Dalgety ( PIXIES , GHOST , ROYAL BLOOD ). Dalgety is the first British producer THE CULT has worked with since its second album, "Love" (1985).

Astbury previously spoke highly of "Under The Midnight Sun" last July in an interview with Dayton Daily News . At the time, he said: "It is a different animal. It destroys 'Hidden City' and anything else we've done in quite a while. We dug deep and put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this record.

"It's a brave new world out there and we want to be a part of it, but you don't get to be a part of it unless you're doing your best work," he added. "There are no free passes for anyone. You're only as good as what's happening today."

In a separate interview with the Los Angeles Daily News , Astbury stated about "Under The Midnight Sun" : "This new album is a really honest, authentic depiction of where we are today. It's a very focused record and it's layered, it's dense, it's celebratory and it gets dark. There's a lot in this record. It's an amalgamation of THE CULT 's major influences, the DNA of the band all culminating in a very special moment."

Born out of the ashes of the U.K. post-punk scene, THE CULT evolved to become one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the late 20th century, selling millions of albums, headlining arenas and stadiums around the world, infusing innovative possibilities into the worlds of music and art, and quickly ascending through the ranks of the indie music world to achieve global status. THE CULT , whose music transformed from punk rock to post-punk, psychedelia, heavy dance music and transcendental hard rock, became one of the handful of important bands in the U.S. post-modern and hard rock communities, and was embraced by a generation that was waking up to the influence of 1960s and 1970s rock icons like LED ZEPPELIN , THE NEW YORK DOLLS and David Bowie .

The constant core of THE CULT is the "head and heart" of the band, Astbury and guitarist/composer Billy Duffy . Attitude incarnate, the chemistry between these two vastly different artists — equal parts genuine affection and palpable tension — remains the source of their long-standing partnership. Duffy grounds Astbury 's esoteric side with a hard rock perspective, and there is no doubt that at all times, these two have each other's back. THE CULT 's current lineup also includes former WHITE ZOMBIE , EXODUS and TESTAMENT drummer John Tempesta .

DutchNews.nl - DutchNews.nl brings daily news from The Netherlands in English

10 terror plots foiled in europe in 2023: dutch security service.

the midnight tour 2023 europe

At least  10 planned terrorist attacks  in Europe were discovered and halted by  western  security services in 2023, the Dutch security service AIVD said on Tuesday.

People were arrested in the Netherlands in four of the foiled attacks, which ranged from concrete preparations to target a specific event or building, to random knifing incidents.

The claim is made in the agency’s annual report, which said jihadist movements remain the biggest terrorist threat to the Netherlands. And while there have been fewer attacks in Europe than in recent years, “certain events” can lead to violence, the AIVD said.

Two such trigger events – the war in Gaza and Koran burning by far-right groups – did take place last year and led terrorist  organisations  such as al-Qaida and IS to call for attacks in the  west .

“The grim picture painted by the AIVD last year has worsened in many ways,” the AIVD said. “National threats are increasingly linked to international developments. There have been two major conflicts, numerous terrorist attack plots foiled in the Netherlands and abroad, and the Netherlands is targeted daily in cyber attacks.”

The threat level in the Netherlands was raised from  three to four , or substantial, in   mid-December.

“There is a reason why this period has been described as ‘the grey zone’ between war and peace, AIVD director Erik Akerboom said. “This poses great risks to the Netherlands, which owes much of its peace and prosperity to international trade and to a rules-based world order.”

The agency also raised its concerns about the rise in anti-institutional protests and the willingness of some so-called sovereign citizens to use violence. The military security service MIVD gave a similar warning earlier this month.

Akerboom also said the service made a 70% rise in requests to use “special investigative methods” last year, such as hacking and internet taps, but did not say how many requests had been made. The report did say 1,117 bugs, telephone  and  internet  taps had been placed by the agency in 2023.

Russia and China too remain a threat to the Netherlands, particularly through industrial espionage and, in the case of Russia, spreading misinformation.

Fall 2023 North American Tour

the midnight tour 2023 europe

The Fall 2023 North American Tour was the sixth concert tour by The Midnight . [1] Announced in April 2023, the tour began on September 16, 2023, in Atlanta, Georgia , and concluded on October 21, 2023, in Monterrey, Mexico . With the exception of the final two dates which took place in Mexico, all shows were in the United States.

The Fall 2023 North American Tour featured a diverse array of songs from across all of The Midnight's releases. The tour saw Tim McEwan return to the front of the stage playing synths and pads, having previously performed with a full drum kit since the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 Tour . During the tour, the band played for the first time at the music festivals Music Midtown in Atlanta and Live Out in Monterrey. Additionally, they opened for ODESZA on their The Last Goodbye Tour on October 19, 2023, The Midnight's first time being a supporting act and their first performance in Mexico since 2019.

25 shows were performed over the span of six weeks, the longest individual run of shows for The Midnight since they began touring in 2018. The band's lineup, unchanged since the spring leg of the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 Tour, consisted of Tim McEwan on percussion and synths, Tyler Lyle on guitar and vocals, Lelia Broussard on guitar and bass, Royce Whittaker on guitar, and Justin Klunk on saxophone.

The tour was announced on April 11, 2023. [1] Presales began the following day, with sales open to general public on April 14. On May 16, the band was announced as part of the lineup for Music Midtown in Atlanta, with The Midnight's show taking place on September 16. [2] On June 20, Flamingosis was announced as the opening act for all shows and two additional dates in Nashville and Memphis were added. [3]

This setlist is from the October 7, 2023, show at House of Blues in Boston. Most shows followed this setlist with occasional variations, usually in the encore.

The heat is on: Earth Day 2024 puts spotlight on plastics

In honor of Earth Day, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists thought it worth taking the pulse of the current climate and environmental crises facing the planet, and what is being done about them. Below is a roundup on the “State of the Earth,” if you will.

One word: Plastics. The first Earth Day in 1970 was organized in response to a catastrophic oil blow-out off the coast of California the year before, when up to 100,000 barrels of oil spilled into the Santa Barbara Channel. The disaster killed some 3,500 sea birds, as well as marine mammals like dolphins, elephant seals, and sea lions. At the time, it was the largest oil spill in United States waters, although it was later surpassed by the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.

This year, the organization behind Earth Day has set their sights on a more diffuse, global environmental disaster: plastics.

The plastics industry is expected to double or triple production by 2050, unless global leaders intervene. Even if the rate of plastic production holds steady, the emissions from the plastic sector could account for a fifth of the remaining carbon budget by mid-century, according to a new analysis from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Even present-day levels of plastic manufacturing generate a shocking amount of greenhouse gas emissions. According to The Guardian, “Plastic creation generated 2.24 gigatonnes of planet-heating pollution in 2019, or as much as 600 coal-fired power plants.”

Consequently, Earth Day organizers are calling for a 60-percent reduction in plastics production by 2040, and a phase-out of single-use plastic by 2030. It’s a timely demand, as nearly 200 UN member states have begun negotiating a plastics treaty . The intergovernmental Negotiating Committee will meet for a fourth session in Canada this week to continue discussions.

“All this plastic was produced by a petrochemical industry with an abysmal record of toxic emissions, spills, and explosions,” said Denis Hayes, chair emeritus of EarthDay.org. “Plastics are produced in polluting facilities that somehow seem to always be located in the poorest neighborhoods. Some plastics are lethal when combusted; other plastics transmit hormone-disrupting chemicals; and all plastics can starve birds and suffocate sea life. At every stage of their life cycles, from the oil well to the town dump, plastics are a dangerous blight.”

The heat is on. March 2024 was the 10th consecutive month to break global heat records . The average surface air temperature was 14.14 degrees Celsius, 0.73 degrees above the 1991-2020 average for the month and 0.10 degrees hotter than the previous high set in March 2016. What’s more, the global average temperature over the past 12 months (April 2023 – March 2024) was the highest on record, 0.70 degrees Celsius warmer than the 1991-2020 average and 1.58 degrees above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. In other words, in the past 12 months, the Earth has already exceeded the warming limit of 1.5 degrees set in the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

Oceans in crisis. The average global sea surface temperature in March was also the highest monthly temperature on record, 21.07 degrees Celsius, or nearly 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists said this month that coral reefs around the globe are undergoing another mass bleaching event because of the warming oceans. Bleaching has been confirmed in over 50 countries or territories. Coral bleaching occurs when stressed corals expel their primary food source: the algae that gives them their vibrant color. “As the world’s oceans continue to warm, coral bleaching is becoming more frequent and severe,” said Derek Manzello, NOAA Coral Reef Watch coordinator, in a statement to the press.

Biodiversity in decline. The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services estimates that one million plant and animal species are at risk of extinction , and that the extinction loss is accelerating due to climate change and habitat destruction through deforestation or other land-use changes. One way to measure this crisis is by analyzing recordings taken from different habitats . One study of 200,000 sites in North America and Europe found “pervasive loss of acoustic diversity and intensity of soundscapes across both continents over the past 25 years, driven by changes in species richness and abundance.” The threats to species will increase with every degree of warming : at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), 4 percent of mammals will lose half their habitat; at 3 degrees of warming (more than 5 degrees Fahrenheit), more than 40 percent of mammals will lose half of their habitat.

Planetary tipping points. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change defines tipping points as “critical thresholds in a system that, when exceeded, can lead to a significant change in the state of the system, often with an understanding that the change is irreversible.” Whether the Earth has passed those tipping points, or is close to passing them, is a controversial subject of debate . The Global Tipping Points report released late last year asserted that the Earth is teetering on the edge of five key thresholds, including the collapse of the Greenland ice sheet, widespread permafrost thawing, widespread death of warm water corals, and the collapse of an important oceanic current in the North Atlantic. Even if the possibility of crossing some or all of these tipping points is currently slim, “it is precisely those high-end possibilities of system collapse, rather than the middle-of-the-road linear probabilities, that must be the focus of concern and should spur the world to action,” as David Spratt wrote in the Bulletin last year.

As dire as the above all sounds, it’s worth acknowledging and celebrating some of the more positive signs of climate and environmental action around the globe.

Climate wins in court. Earlier this month, a group of 2,000 Swiss women won a lawsuit against their government for violating the human rights of its citizens by not doing enough to combat climate change — an important, precedent-setting decision. The president of Europe’s highest human rights court said the Swiss government had failed to meet its own targets for slashing emissions and had not set a national carbon budget. And last summer, a Montana judge ruled in favor of a group of young plaintiffs and said the state’s failure to consider climate change impacts in environmental reviews was an unconstitutional violation of Montana’s constitution, which states “[t]he state and each person shall maintain and improve a clean and healthful environment in Montana for present and future generations.” Germany was compelled to increase its emissions-reduction target to a 65 percent cut by 2030 after a group of young environmental activists won a case that said the previous target was insufficient to limit warming to “well below 2 degrees Celsius,” as set forth in the Paris climate agreement. Since 1986, over 2,340 climate change cases have been filed in courts worldwide.

Renewables ascendant. This month, Mark Z. Jacobson, the director of Stanford University’s Atmosphere/Energy program, celebrated the fact that renewable sources had met 100 percent of California’s energy demands for 25 of the past 32 days. Meanwhile, a community solar developer called Nexamp recently raised over $500 million to build solar arrays around the United States. These projects allow people who can’t install rooftop solar to buy into these larger projects and receive credits on their energy bills.

Nature-based policies. Government policies that take aim at reducing deforestation and other types of environmental degradation doubled over the last 12 months, according to a new study . The European Union, for example, will require companies to prove that the products they import, including cocoa, coffee, rubber, palm oil, soy, beef, and wood, are not tied to recent deforestation or forest degradation .

Now it’s your turn: What climate and environmental news do you think is important to share or celebrate this Earth Day? Sound off in the reader comments below.
