Coober Pedy Blower Truck

Today we will pick you up from your Adelaide city hotel and travel along the Explorer Highway to Coober Pedy. Our journey takes us through the towns of Port Wakefield and Port Augusta. A stop at Lochiel’s pink salt lake can not be missed. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Woomera and walk among the rockets and planes. Lake Hart and Glendambo are our final stops on route to Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy was once just a rocky, dusty desert plain and is now the opal mining capital of the world. We will check into our underground accommodation and join back for a delicious dinner. (Day 1 Lunch, Dinner, The Lookout Cave Coober Pedy overnight)

Coober Pedy to William Creek

Coober Pedy is a very bizarre town and we start the day with an opal mine tour and learn about this beautiful gem stone. Look at some spectacular examples before our drive to the colourful Breakaways. After lunch we travel to South Australia’s smallest town William Creek. We arrive mid afternoon with plenty of time to check out this remote and unique area. Relax and unwind in your en-suited cabin or join the locals for an ice cold beer before our dinner. (Day 2 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, William Creek En-suited Cabins overnight)

Lake Eyre and the Painted Hills Scenic Flight with remote Landing, Walk on South Lake Eyre

This morning we take our stunning scenic flight over Lake Eyre. Our special two hour flight will take you over Lake Eyre and the Painted Hills. These must-see sandstone hills are set in the outback of South Australia and can only be reached by air. We have permission to land and explore this very unique and spectacular landmark on the ground. After an unforgettable early morning flight we drive along the Oodnadatta Track to South Lake Eyre. Walk to the edge of the lake or enjoy the views from the information bay. Be amazed by the endless horizon and witness the vast inland, loneliness and incredible nature.

Then it is time to make our way to Marree. Learn about Sir Sidney Kidman and the history of the many displays here. Not too many people are listed as one of their town’s visitor attractions. But then Talc Alf is a one off, a quirky and engaging outback character who has achieved near icon status along the Oodnadatta Track. Over the past 40 years he has created an outside gallery in Lyndhurst and we will view some of Alf’s unique talc carvings. Our final stretch take us to Leigh Creek for a comfortable overnight stay. (Day 3 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Leigh Creek Outback Resort overnight)

Lake Eyre Safari

Australian Air Safaris has conducted over 150 air tours to Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda). The significance of the Lake, over recent decades, through natural history documentaries, has become etched in the Australian psyche and a 'bucket list' item for many. Little wonder, its statistics are mind-blowing. Lake Eyre is the size of England and the lowest point on mainland Australia with a catchment area of over 1 million square kilometres. It is as stunning to view from the air when it is glisteningly dry as when it is in flood. Our Lake Eyre Safari tour offers an action-packed weekend into our extraordinary, great outback.

Due to travel distances, our 2-day Lake Eyre Safari only departs from Melbourne. We also have 3-, 4-, and 5-day tours that feature Lake Eyre that depart from the Gold Coast, Sydney, and Melbourne. Click here to see those options as well.

Australian Air Safaris tours offer unique itineraries flying around Australia.  We explore our vast nation in our private planes, meaning we are always small groups, and everyone has a window seat.  We have over 45 years of air touring experience, creating unforgettable experiences that will last a lifetime. Our all-inclusive* tours are hosted by our knowledgeable pilots and assisted by local guides who share our passion for this country, ensuring you're never short of stories to tell when you get home.

We take care of all of the planning and logistics. All you have to do is meet us at the airport, ready for an adventure of a lifetime. We will whisk you away to places near and far, exploring the hard to get to and the unique.

An early 8.00am departure to make the most of the day. Fly from Melbourne to Wentworth for a short refuelling stop before flying to William Creek.

William Creek is famous for its pub (one of the most remote in Australia) and is the closest town to Lake Eyre North. Enjoy lunch at the hotel and check into your ensuite accommodation for the night before a magical experience to the Anna Creek Painted Hills in the afternoon. Board a Wrightsair aircraft with a local expert for the short flight to the Painted Hills, which are only accessible by air and have only recently opened for ground touring. Covering an area of 10 by 30 kilometres, the multi-coloured pristine sandstone hills of varying shapes and sizes emerge suddenly out of the flat desert landscape.

Return to William Creek for a refreshing ale at the hospitable William Creek Hotel and quality outback pub grub for dinner.

Overnight : William Creek Hotel

Following breakfast, the highlight of the tour – a breathtaking scenic flight over Lake Eyre of approximately one hour. Fly over Belt Bay, the deepest part of the Lake, Madigan Gulf, the sand islands and Warburton Inlet.

Land at Muloorina Station, near the edge of the Lake, meet the Station owner and hear the fascinating story of the Station's special relationship with Lake Eyre.

Back in the air, fly over the mystical 'Marree Man', only discovered in 1998; the 3.5km long artwork depicts a hunter with a stick or boomerang in hand.

Fly onto the spectacular Flinders Ranges with a circle around Wilpena Pound. Then enjoy a delicious lunch at Rawnsley Park Station in their authentic Woolshed restaurant overlooking the southern side of Wilpena Pound.

The final leg of the journey will have you arriving back in Moorabbin Airport at approximately 6.30pm completing an incredible 2-day expedition to the great Australian outback.

About Lake Eyre

Lake Eyre is the lowest point in Australia, at approximately 15m (49ft) below sea level, and on the rare occasions that it fills, the largest lake in Australia and the 18th largest in the world. The temporary shallow lake is the depocenter of the vast Lake Eyre Basin and is found 700km north of Adelaide. Join us on this magnificent journey into South Australia’s far north, taking in the rugged landscapes of the Flinders Ranges and the outback, including Coober Pedy , as we travel up through this spectacular region.

Water Is Flowing Back Into The Lake

[updated 27 March 2024]

The influx of water from ex-cyclone Kirrily has sparked a remarkable transformation across western Queensland, with rivers and creeks in the Lake Eyre Basin swelling and flowing southward towards Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. This natural event has led to moderate flooding in several rivers such as the Cooper Creek, Thomson, Barcoo, Georgina, and Diamantina, all contributing to the replenishment of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre.

The journey of this water, originating from as far as Alice Springs, Mt Isa, Cloncurry, and Longreach, highlights the interconnectedness of Australia’s waterways. It’s a reminder of the profound impact of weather systems on the landscape and ecosystems.

The abundance of pelicans and the arrival of banded stilts, traveling vast distances to partake in the flourishing ecosystem, further emphasize the significance of the water influx from ex-cyclone Kirrily. This natural phenomenon isn’t just about the physical transformation of the landscape; it’s about the intricate web of life it supports, from the smallest organisms to the majestic birds that grace the skies.

This period presents a unique opportunity for travellers to witness the rejuvenation of the outback as it comes to life with the influx of water. From the thriving wildlife to the scenic landscapes, there’s much to experience and appreciate during this time. Gekko Safari’s 5-day tours, including visits to the Flinders Ranges and Cooper Pedy, along with a flight over Lake Eyre with Wrights Air, offer an incredible chance to immerse oneself in the beauty and majesty of this natural spectacle.

Amazing Time To See The Lake

The forecast of additional rainfall in Queensland and outback South Australia in the next few weeks will most certainly lead to more runoff into the lake, increasing its water levels.

Adelaide / Flinders Ranges (includes lunch & dinner)

Pick up from your Adelaide CBD accommodation or central bus station at approx 7.00 am and head north to the Clare Valley which is well renowned for its excellent wines, with time to visit Seven Hills grounds, the oldest winery in the region established by the Jesuits in 1851.

We travel to Melrose, a lovely little town nestled in the foothills of the Flinders Ranges where we stop for lunch. Driving further north we arrive at Quorn which became the junction of the Sydney-Perth and Adelaide-Darwin railway systems in 1917.

After visiting Jeff Morgan’s Wilpena panorama in the town of Hawker, we arrive late afternoon in time to see the sunset over the Ranges as kangaroos come out to feed. Tonight enjoy a relaxing meal, o/n en-suite accommodation at Rawnsley or Outback Chapmanton Hotel.

Flinders Ranges / Marree (includes breakfast, lunch & dinner)

After breakfast we take a walk along the beautiful Wilpena Creek framed by huge river red gums, where we can see the mystical heart of the Flinders Ranges with stunning views of this magical land.

Continuing our journey exploring Brachina and Bunyeroo gorge we discover their priceless geological treasures, crystal clear water holes and an abundance of flora and fauna including the rare yellow footed rock wallaby.

After lunch we head to the Parachilna Hotel for a coffee stop before travelling into the desert country up the Oodnadatta Track. We follow the old Ghan railway line and arrive at Lyndhurst to explore the ochre cliffs.

Late afternoon we arrive at Marree, a town at the junction of the famous Birdsville Track which is still populated by descendents of Afghan cameleers and with a rich history as a staging post for the large camel trains carrying goods in the early days.

O/n en-suite accommodation in Marree. You will be staying in an ensuite cabin and be welcomed with the friendly hospitality of the outback.

Marree / Coober Pedy (includes breakfast, lunch & dinner)

We start the day with a visit of the Arabanna Aboriginal Centre (if open) with its display of art, weapons and local information. Back on the Oodnadatta track we explore artesian spring’s ecosystem, arriving at the shores of Lake Eyre, to marvel at this inland sea.

This is followed by lunch at William Creek. We then enjoy a captivating scenic flight over Lake Eyre North , the best way to fully enjoy the vastness of this amazing place. We then head for the opal capital of the world, Coober Pedy.

We will travel past the famous dingo fence and through the world’s largest cattle station, Anna Creek, before arriving in Coober Pedy.

O/n hotel en-suite accommodation. These original basic dwellings have now been developed to a point where luxurious underground homes and hotels, known as dugouts, have been planned and built.

Coober Pedy to Woomera (includes breakfast, lunch & dinner)

This morning we start with a guided tour explaining the history of Coober Pedy and a 20 minutes award-winning documentary presented in an underground theatrette on three panoramic screens. We will learn about the opal industry including an opal cutting demonstration.

This will be followed by visiting an underground dugout home and the Serbian underground church. We then head out to the breakaways reserve, a colourful land formation derived from the evaporation of an inland, ancient, Australian sea.

We return to Coober Pedy for lunch via the dog fence and the moon plains.

Heading along the Stuart Highway, with tracts of desert scenery stretching out as far as the eye can see.

We stop at Glendambo and then arrive at Woomera which was one of the world’s busiest launch site for testing rockets and missiles during the 1950’s and 1960’s. O/n Eldo Hotel accommodation.

Woomera to Adelaide (includes breakfast & Lunch)

This morning we depart for Port Augusta, situated on the quiet waterways at the head of the Spencer Gulf.

On arrival we will enjoy a 1 hour tour of the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens. The Garden showcases a diverse collection of arid zone habitats in a picturesque setting of more than 250 hectares.

After lunch we head south and stop at Port Germein, once an important transport hub for the surrounding districts following the opening of its jetty in 1881 – at the time known as the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere (1680m, about 100,000 bags of wheat were loaded per year).

We arrive in Adelaide at around 6.30pm and drop you off at your hotel.

Proposed Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre management plan to ban recreational access without cultural permission

A plane flies over Kati Thanda lake Eyre and the water is hues of pink and blue against a blue sky and white clouds.

A new management plan proposed for outback Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre by the SA government suggests banning members of the public from walking, driving or boating on the lake bed without permission from the traditional owners.

The public would be allowed to view the inland lake from the air or from two designated visitor areas — Halligan Bay Point Campground and the southern information bay off the Oodnadatta Track.

A woman in a navy shirt saying 'ARABANA' and sunglasses stands smiling in front of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre.

Arabana Aboriginal Corporation chairperson Bronwyn Dodd said Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre was connected to one of their most important Ularaka (stories) and a place where their ancestors rest.

"From a cultural aspect, that's really disrespectful to enter such a significant cultural site," she said.

"For us, our ancestors are there, our stories are there, and it's a very powerful place for Arabana.

"We want people to come and enjoy Kati Thanda by all means. We just want to be able to do that through education and respectful engagement."

Pushback from boaters

Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park is the second largest national park in Australia, covering more than 1.3 million hectares.

An aerial view of white boats floating on a lake in the desert.

The inland lake is a significant tourist drawcard for the outback region, with the usually dry lake-bed experiencing flooding every three to 10 years.

Lake Eyre Yacht Club commodore Bob Backway said he was in disbelief at the proposed plan.

Mr Backway was against controlling recreational activity on the lake, saying it was "effectively privatising the national park".

"We respect physical evidence of Arabana culture and we have strict rules in our club that we only look, examine, study and photograph, but put back any relics that we find out there," he said.

The Department for Environment and Water confirmed there would be exemptions available.

"There's absolutely provision for access for commercial filming or photography, or commercial tour permits to go out onto the lake and that will be considered on a case by case basis to ensure that what's being proposed is culturally appropriate," National Parks and Wildlife Service program director Jason Irving said.

If the management plan is adopted, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre would not be the first natural tourism attraction to limit access to tourists.

In 2019, the Uluru climb was closed by the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park board after consultation with the Anangu community.

Misuse hurts traditional owners

Ms Dodd said activities such as driving or boating on the lake could not only damage the lake bed, but was also hurtful for Arabana.

"My elders have often told me that when they see behaviour such as that, that they deeply hurt inside and it hurts them to see our country hurt like that, when it's being disrespected in such a way," she said.

"They have tried to engage over the years and to help protect and preserve that, but it's certainly a deep hurt when we see people disrespecting such a culturally significant site to us."

Ms Dodd said they also had concerns for the safety of tourists navigating the lake, which was in a remote area.

Members of the public can provide feedback on the management plan online until July 19.

We urge all parties to exercise restraint and step back to avoid a further spiral of violence . Australia will continue working with partners to try to reduce tensions and prevent further regional spillover.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had earlier updated travel advice for the region.

Traditional owners welcome plan to stop visitors walking on Kathi Thanda-Lake Eyre without permission

Visitors will no longer be able to set foot on one of Australia’s premier tourist destinations under a proposed plan to protect its cultural significance for traditional owners, AAP has reported.

Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is the continent’s largest lake. Swimming, driving, boating and landing aircraft on the lake are already banned, but the new plan would prevent visitors from setting foot on its bed without permission.

It is a sacred site for the Arabana people, who have lived in the region for millennia and are the lake’s native title holders.

The Arabana Aboriginal Corporation chairwoman, Bronwyn Dodd, said her people were proud to share Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre but urged visitors to respect their Ularaka (stories), lore and culture:

We have a responsibility to look after the lake and in turn, it looks after us. Preservation of this lake is also the preservation of our culture.

Kathi Thanda-Lake Eyre three-quarters full.

Attorney general calls on men to ‘step up’ against family violence

Echoing the words of anti-family violence campaigner Rosie Batty , the attorney general, Mark Dreyfus, has called on men in Australia to “step up” and stamp out attacks on women, AAP has reported.

In a speech to the family violence symposium held by the federal circuit and family court in Melbourne on Friday, Dreyfus likened the death of more than 25 women this year to an epidemic.

Dreyfus noted the event was being held against the backdrop of “shocking acts of violence against women” just days after five women were stabbed to death at a Bondi Junction shopping centre, and several women were killed in Ballarat in two months. More than 25 women have been killed in Australia so far this year.

“It’s time for men to step up,” he said. “It’s our responsibility to educate ourselves, our sons, our colleagues and our friends.”

New TikTok Notes app to be banned on Australian government devices

Federal government employees will not be allowed to install the new TikTok app that is the Chinese-owned company’s answer to Instagram, with the existing ban extended to Notes.

On Thursday, TikTok launched Notes , an app dedicated to still images and text in Australia and Canada for initial testing before a wider rollout.

It came a year after the Australian government banned the main TikTok app from government devices, saying the app “poses significant security and privacy risks to non-corporate Commonwealth entities arising from extensive collection of user data and exposure to extrajudicial directions from a foreign government that conflict with Australian law”.

On Friday, the Department of Home Affairs confirmed that the existing ban would also apply to Notes.

A spokesperson said:

Protective Security Policy Framework Direction 001-2023 addresses the significant security and privacy risks arising from the TikTok application’s extensive collection of user data and its exposure to extra-judicial directives by a foreign government that conflict with Australian law. The direction extends to TikTok accounts and features subsequently added to the TikTok application, including the photo-sharing capability of TikTok Notes.

Broken Hill newspaper the Barrier Truth announces shock closure

Broken Hill’s independently owned newspaper, the Barrier Truth , has announced its shock closure, AAP has reported.

After almost 130 years in operation, the Truth’s board announced to staff the union-run bi-weekly paper would be shut down as its final edition went to press.

The Barrier Industrial Council president and newspaper board chair, Roslyn Ferry, told AAP the masthead had closed until further notice.

The board planned to seek legal and financial support following the closure, she said.

“It probably comes as no surprise that maintaining operations, particularly over the past 12 months, has been extremely challenging,” Ms Ferry said in a statement.

Woodside revenue falls 31% in first quarter due to sluggish production and falling prices

Sluggish production and falling fossil fuel prices have slashed revenues at Australia’s largest oil and gas producer, Woodside , by almost a third, AAP has reported.

The Perth-based company’s revenue for the first quarter fell 31% compared with the previous year to $US2.97 billion ($A4.66 billion), it announced on Friday.

Over the same period, production dropped by 4% while gas and oil prices slumped by 25%.

Despite the lacklustre result, the chief executive, Meg O’Neill , said significant progress had been made on Woodside’s three major growth projects – Sangomar in Senegal, Scarborough in WA and Trion in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sangomar is now 96% complete, with first oil targeted by mid-2024, O’Neill said.

Electric cars must generate artificial noises under new laws

Electric cars sold in Australia will have to generate artificial noises when driving slowly in carparks and driveways, to aid pedestrian safety around the otherwise quieter vehicles, as part of design requirements unveiled by the Albanese government on Friday.

Acoustic vehicle alerting systems (Avas) will be required in new electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell cars, trucks and buses from November 2025, under the new Australian design rule that brings the country into line with similar requirements in the United States and Europe.

When an electric car travels above 30km/h, it sounds much the same as a petrol-driven vehicle, as the noise is emitted from the tyres vibrating against the road rather than the engine. But below that speed, it becomes barely audible.

BMW i3 car

This can make encountering the vehicles more dangerous for pedestrians, particularly people with low vision. The new design rules are expected to prevent 68 fatalities and 2,675 serious injuries by 2060.

Vision Australia ’s manager of advocacy Chris Edwards said the group had been calling for Avas to be made mandatory in EVs in Australia since 2018.

Edwards said:

All pedestrians should have the right to feel safe and confident when navigating public spaces and today’s announcement is a significant step towards protecting that for people who are blind or have low vision. There is no doubt that this is an announcement that will save lives.

Manufacturers will ultimately get to decide what artificial noises they will feature. BMW has previously hired Hans Zimmer to help score their electric car sound. My colleague Jordyn Beazley has previously covered the question of what electric vehicles should sound like here:

$60m digital passenger declaration app experienced delays, end product ‘inflexible’, home affairs tells inquiry

The department’s acting chief information officer, Matt Jones , added the digital passenger declaration app – which was supposed to be the first step toward overhauling and digitising Australia’s travel and visa system – was also inflexible.

Labor chair, Julian Hill , asked what the department received from Accenture over its $60m contract before it was terminated prematurely: “So, [Accenture] built an app?”

Jones responded:

“Yeah, and a very hard-wired app, so if we wanted to change questions around, for example, health status, it was going to take weeks and weeks and weeks whereas our expectations and the requirements in the tender was that it was supposed to be configurable.”

Home affairs grilled over Covid-era passenger declaration app that operated for only 3 months

Officials from the home affairs department have been grilled by a parliamentary joint committee over their contract with IT company, Accenture , to build a $60m digital passenger declaration app for border re-openings that operated for just three months.

The department’s involvement in signing the contract with the IT firm back in September 2021 was the subject of a scathing report from the Australian national audit office , which found the department undermined its attempts to achieve value for money and did not adequately deal with conflict of interest issues.

The app, which asked incoming passengers to Australia for their health and vaccination status, launched in March 2022 but was ultimately dumped in July 2022 by home affairs minister, Clare O’Neil , after Labor took up government.

First assistant secretary, Claire Roennfeldt , told the hearing the contract with Accenture was “mutually” terminated due to a change in biosecurity laws but also spoke at length of how the IT firm failed to deliver on expectations and experienced ongoing delays.

Few women among election candidates in Solomon Islands as counting continues

Which 50 Solomon Islanders will make up the next government remains in doubt, but one thing is clear: few will be women.

The Pacific nation, where rapidly deepening ties with China have grabbed international headlines, held its biggest election day on Wednesday, with 1200 candidates running for seats in national and local parliaments.

Counting is expected to continue in earnest on Friday with a few surprises among the early results already declared.

Martin Fini, the pro-China leader of the country’s most populous province, was confirmed to have lost his seat a year after coming to power in Malaita in controversial circumstances .

But few victors across the country will be women, having made up a paltry 5% of candidates in the joint elections.

WA police call for witnesses after fatal Clackline crash

Police have asked anyone who might have seen the car to get in contact:

What I will ask is if anyone was on the road in the early hours or late evening yesterday or the early hours of this morning, if they did witness anything or did see a silver Nissan Navara utility travelling down that road, or have dashcam, if they could please contact Crime Stoppers. It’s really important that I remind people of the fundamentals of driving on our roads, particularly in regional WA. Do not drive tired, do not drink and drive or use drugs and drive. If you’re driving particularly long distances in the dark, in remote locations, you take suitable rest periods and respite periods, wear your seatbelt, and please do not touch your phones at all.

‘Three brothers and their family friend’ killed in Wheatbelt car crash, police confirm

A WA police spokesperson is speaking to media now:

When you lose three young men, three brothers and their family friend in one crash, this is a heartbreaking incident for WA. I attended the scene this morning and as you can imagine, it was a very confronting scene for first responders, to attend and, investigate.

He said the 21-year-old man was the driver, his two brothers aged 19 and 9 were in the back seat and their family friend, 45, was in the passenger seat.

All four occupants sustained critical injuries and they died at the scene. Major crash investigations have attended and they are conducting an investigation surrounding the circumstances of that death.

Police in Perth will give an update on the fatal crash soon . I will bring you that when it comes.

Ahpra survey shows culture of bullying in trainee doctors

Non-binary and women medical trainees around the nation have reported higher experiences of bullying and mistreatment, AAP reports.

Serious concerns about the culture of medicine were raised by trainee doctors of all genders in the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency survey of more than 23,000 doctors in training in 2023.

Those who identify as non-binary reported the most instances of bullying, harassment, discrimination and/or racism.

16% of non-binary respondents disagreed that bullying, harassment and discrimination is not tolerated by anyone in the workplace.

Some 32% of female respondents witnessed bullying, harassment, discrimination or racism in the past year, while 58% of non-binary respondents said the same.

Female trainees also reported more workplace bullying and mistreatment than their male counterparts.

Non-binary and women medical trainees around the nation report higher experiences of bullying and mistreatment.

The Ahpra board chair said the culture of medical training needed ongoing attention. Anne Tonkin said in the December 2023 report:

In such a complex system of shared accountabilities and responsibilities, there is no quick fix. The urgent need for ongoing commitment to building a culture of respect in medicine and medical training remains.

More than 18,000 participants answered a question about their gender, with more than 9000 trainees identifying as female, 8000 as male and 67 as non-binary.
