Is the Maldives really worth it? Here’s my experience

Our overwater villa at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

Is the Maldives really worth it? Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you must’ve seen many brochures splashed all over, talking about this ‘paradise’ on earth. The absurdity of that hyperbole aside, I was always curious about how good the Maldives really could be. In the miles and points community, we’ve seen the Maldives as being a destination that’s almost some sort of a badge of honor. After over 8 years of dabbling in miles and points, I decided I should check it out and find out the answer myself whether the Maldives is really worth it. Here’s what I found.

Is the Maldives really worth it?

Clearly when we ask the question whether something is worth it, we’re looking for return on our spend. Spend can be in the form of time or money. You expect a certain value once you spend a sum of time or money. Given those metrics, how does the Maldives stack up? Let’s get the cons out of the way before we head over to the pros.

The not so good stuff

It’s really far.

I can totally get it when people avoid the Maldives for this reason. Since we were already positioned in India, it was just a 2 hour direct flight from Mumbai to Male, followed by a 45 minute seaplane ride.

maldives worth it

The views during the Seaplane ride are stunning

However, a number of guests that I met at the hotel were from the US. While they loved the island and the hotel, they were bemoaning the fact that it would take them more than a day just to get back home.

It’s really expensive

When people say that it’s really expensive, they’re not just talking about room rates. We were staying at the Conrad Maldives Rangali island. Even before we checked into our hotel, we’d already paid $1,200. $600 per person for a round trip seaplane ride of 45 minutes. Since our daughter is less than 2 years old, her ride was free. If you’re a family of four, then you could well shell out $2,400 even before you check into the hotel.

maldives worth it

You pass many other hotel properties on the way

Other added costs

The farther you go, the more secluded and beautiful the islands are. On the flip side, it also means higher costs for the hotel to transport and serve everything to their guests. Most hotels pass on those costs to their guests in the form of some sort of ancillary fees.

For example, we called in-villa dining to get food delivered to our room on the very first night. The bill had a ‘tray charge’ of $18. In short, there was an $18 delivery fee just for delivering the food to your room. Also, most entrees started with a price of $35 or more. In short, a simple meal for a family of four ordered to the room could well cost you close to at least $158!

I’m vegetarian, so most of the entrees I ended up eating were in the $35-$40 range. The hotel had many restaurants, all priced in the same range. If you were to order seafood or other meats, your entree prices would only be more expensive.

We also visited the Ithaa undersea restaurant. While it’s stunning, the restaurant charges a fee of $120 to visit during the 11 AM – Noon hour for a glass of champagne and some canapés. If you’re looking to have a four course meal, then you could well end up shelling out over $200 per person. However, you do have the option of booking the champagne and canapés hour experience using 25,000 Hilton Honors points.

The good stuff

Peace and quiet.

This is one part that I really appreciated during my vacation. We were on Rangali island and the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island was the only property on the island. Since it wasn’t busy season, the hotel was barely at 30% capacity. This made life really easy for us as we got an easy upgrade to a Grand Water Villa. It also meant that the public areas of the hotel were barely crowded. The breakfast was a breeze, the pool area was relaxed and the beach area was perfect for taking pictures of the sunrise and sunset.

Warm people

I was blown away by the quality of service at the hotel and in general around the island. Be it airport staff, immigration officers, gate agents or the staff at our hotel, people were extremely warm and courteous.

Moreover, the staff the Conrad Maldives Rangali island was quite chatty and made an effort to know their guests. They were also on the lookout for any requests or needs as we were traveling with our infant daughter. In short, one could feel that employees were empowered to go above and beyond in order to help guests have a comfortable stay.

Amazing sunrise/sunset views

Over the last half a decade, I’ve traveled to many beach destinations. Be it Koh Samui, Cartagena, Goa or Bali, I’ve always loved spending time on the beach, taking pictures of the colors at sunrise or sunset. After my trip to the Maldives, I can safely say that many of the views simply took my breath away.

maldives worth it

Crystal clear water and active marine life

I can imagine why the Maldives is a dream destination for people who love exploring the oceans. Its crystal clear waters and soft sand are a perfect blend for those who want to explore marine life.

The luxury factor

The Maldives is probably one of the most over-Instagrammed (if that’s a word) destinations. However, after spending a week there, I can imagine why many people hype it up so much. While I wouldn’t hype it to the point by using words like paradise, I’d definitely say it’s an experience worth checking out once.

In my opinion, if you plan to travel that far, then it makes sense to book an overwater Villa.

maldives worth it

The overwater villas are simply stunning

Time to Unwind

This was probably the number one thing for me. The Maldives is almost 12 hours ahead of the Pacific time zone. What that means is that you can spend the day without having to think about work or any other related stuff. Some of the highlights of the trip for me were the walks by the beach, the pictures at sunrise and sunset or simply enjoying the cool breeze on the boardwalk while walking to or from our water villa.

maldives worth it

Having grown up in Mumbai and then having worked in the Bay Area, I’ve been attuned to the hustle and bustle of living and working in a big city. That’s precisely why I felt extremely relaxed during my time in the Maldives. There was simply so much to appreciate around me, without having to think about deadlines, projects or meetings.

The Pundit’s Mantra

A Maldives trip can really break the bank. There are tiny costs that add up. There are seaplane rides upwards of $600 per person. However, would I still recommend it? I’d say yes, especially if you’re booking with miles and points. We booked our stay with free night certificates from the Hilton Aspire card , so we didn’t pay anything out of pocket for our stay. Moreover, Diamond status with the card meant free breakfast for us every day, in addition to a complimentary cocktail and snack hour each evening.

Would I go there again? Probably yes, but only if I’m using some sort of hotel points to cover my lodging costs. If that’s not the case, then paying upwards of $1,500 per night for a water villa in addition to several ancillary fees (which all add up) simply doesn’t suit my travel goals.

Have you been to the Maldives? Would you go there again? Tell us in the comments section.

7 perfect days: an island hopping guide in the Maldives

Diane Selkirk

With more than a thousand small islands scattered across 500 miles in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is a dream getaway—the land of private islands and overwater bungalows. But all the luxe resorts sometimes overshadow the country’s other side, one that highlights the rich Maldivian culture.

Drawing on insights from in-the-know Tripadvisor users, we’ve curated the ultimate weeklong island-hopping itinerary. Over the course of seven days, you’ll start in the vibrant capital of Male and then head to an under-the-radar island where you’ll stay in a local guesthouse, sample Maldivian cuisine, and try your hand at a few traditional skills like rope making. From there, you’ll be off to experience a stunning private-island resort. To round out your visit, you’ll have plenty of time for exploring the Maldives’ stunning undersea world.

Vendor at fruit market in Male, Maldives

MORNING: Dive into bustling streets

With its tall apartment buildings and narrow streets, the island city of Male is very different from the small villages and tropical resorts that you’ll find in the rest of the country. One of the most densely populated places in the world, Male’s maze of streets are perfect for exploring by foot—you can walk across the island north-to-south in just 20 minutes and along the way you’ll pass through busy shopping streets and leafy residential neighborhoods.

Start your day by shopping like a local. Located on the pier on the north side of the island, the vegetable and dry fish market is where you’ll find the freshest regional fruits and vegetables, spices, nuts, dried, and smoked fish. It’s also a great place to try some new flavors: Tuna chips, sea almonds, dried mango, and coconut sticks are all popular. From here, head across the street to the fish market , which is located right next to the harbor where fishermen pull up in their wooden dhoni boats to unload their catch. By midmorning the market is packed with locals bargaining for the biggest tuna. If you’re staying in a hotel with a kitchen, pick out a piece of fish to take back—you may even get a few recipes. Otherwise spend some time exploring—most of the locals speak English and will tell you about their catch. Before you leave this area don’t miss a walk out to the outer edge of the vegetable market’s pier, a popular place to spot wild stingrays.

Travelers say: “Located across the road from the fishing boats, the fish market is full of fish of all sizes and various colors. Along the right hand side, fish is filleted expertly as you watch. It's a small market so plan about 15 minutes here.”—@ohiowanderer

AFTERNOON: Experience the culture

For your next stop, you’ll need to be dressed appropriately—long trousers for the men, skirts past the knees and covered shoulders for women. From the fish market, it’s a short walk to the Old Friday Mosque , which was built in 1656. Check out the delicate carvings and text inscribed into the building’s coral stone. Non-Muslims require permission from an official from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs to enter, but many of the mosque staff are licensed, so they’ll usually let you in if you visit outside prayer times.

Next, head down the street to the newer Grand Friday Mosque : With its dramatic golden dome and vast hall, it’s a grand sight. Visitors are allowed to visit outside of prayer times, as long as they’re modestly dressed. Right across the street is the Seagull Cafe , built around a large leafy tree. Grab a seat on the upper floor, which has open-air views of the mosque’s golden dome and is the perfect setting for a shady and lazy lunch. The tuna steak and biryani are fan favorites.

MALE TOUR OPTIONS

  • Covering all the highlights, this walking tour pairs you with a local guide who will tell you all about the history of the city and the country.
  • This tour takes in the fruit and vegetable markets, historical landmarks, and includes a break from the city with a quick boat ride to the pedestrian-only island of Vilimale. Here, you’ll get a sense of island culture with an afternoon tea served with hedhikaa (short eats), which includes a number of savory pastries.
  • This private tour is excellent for going at your own pace, allowing you to customize according to your interests.

EVENING: Wind down in nature

In the evening, take a stroll down the shady paths of Lonuziyaaraiy Park—where the secluded benches and flower gardens are a welcome respite from the bustle of the city. If you venture to the edge of the park, you’ll get a good view of Sinamalé Bridge, which links Male to Hulhule and Hulhumale. While you’re there, check for the wave break: You may catch sight of a few surfers. For dinner, it’s a 10-minute walk to the family-owned Sala Thai ; highlights include the green curry and chicken satay, and mango sticky rice for dessert. Male’s restaurants are usually busiest right after evening prayers, which happen at sunset, so either make a reservation, or plan to eat a little before or after the sun goes down.

Worthy detours along the way

MORNING: Start strong

Start your day like a local, and seek out one of Male’s hotaas, a typical tea shop that opens early and closes late and serves a wide variety of Maldivian foods. One popular spot is Magukolhu Hotaa , a crisp blue and white building with a simple interior located near King Salman Mosque. Be sure to try the local favorite mas huni , a spicy, flavorful blend of tuna, grated coconut, and chilis, scooped up with warm rounds of fresh chapati .

After breakfast, rent a car, scooter, or bike to head across the nearly one-mile-long Sinamale Bridge to Hulhumale , a reclaimed island that was built in phases to accommodate Malé’s ever-expanding population.

AFTERNOON: Dive into the Indian Ocean

With its white sand, beachside swing seating and floating swimming pool, Hulhumale’s public beach is a lively spot to experience local culture and take a dip in the sea (be sure to wear a cover-up over your swimsuit out of respect). From there, wander over to Hulhumale Water Sports Club . Here, local guides rent watercraft like jet skis and kayaks or will work with you to design a surfing, snorkeling, or sandbar expedition that matches your interests and comfort level (these are great guides for beginner or nervous snorkelers).

To refuel, head down the road to the Red Snapper & Coffee Beans , a rustic beachside establishment where you’ll find tasty fruit-based mocktails (Banana Mia, anyone?) and a menu that includes fresh salads, seafood, and burgers.

HULHUMALE TOUR OPTIONS

  • Departing from Hulhumale, this boat tour visits two nearby islands and allows visitors to learn about daily life in the Maldives, as well as the country’s rich culture.
  • This snorkeling tour includes a stop at a small island for lunch and a tour.
  • Snorkel off a sandbank and keep an eye out for dolphins, before relaxing on this sunset cruise .

EVENING: Live like a local

Go from the seaside to a green oasis with an evening stroll through Central Park . Here, you’ll see plenty of local families enjoying the cooler evening temperatures and admiring the colorful water fountain in the center of the park. For dinner, the casual Pilawoos restaurant serves up Sri Lankan favorites like kottu (chopped roti mixed with curry) and string hoppers (nests of noodles and curry).

Travelers say: “Cozy restaurant on the back-street of our hotel (Planktons Beach) where we sampled lip-smacking Sri Lankan cuisine. The price is reasonable, and portions generous! Our steward Kumar was very helpful with the menu. We'll certainly come back!”—@Udayadittya

MORNING: Head to an atoll

It’s time for adventure, as you leave the busy streets of Male and hop on a ferry for the 2.5 hour trip to the island of Dhigurah , one of over a dozen islets that make up the Alif Dhaal Atoll —a ring of coral islands and reef that enclose a protected lagoon. Until 2010, local islands like this were off-limits to international travelers, apart from day trips. Visitors were only allowed to stay at the Maldives’ opulent (and expensive) private resort islands. Since then, the laws have changed, and tons of guesthouses and affordable boutique hotels have popped up where you can immerse yourself in Maldivian culture and experience the wonderful warmth of the locals. Just be aware—at these locally owned spots, you won’t find alcohol or pork, and your beachwear might need to be more conservative.

There are several options on the tear-drop shaped island of Dhigurah, a fishing village of 600 inhabitants with two miles of beach stretching along a sheltered blue lagoon. Our pick is TME Retreats Dhigurah . This charming (and affordable) beachside hotel has a restaurant, foosball, pool, beach volleyball, and the occasional local music performance and is located near the island’s “bikini beach” (where guests can relax and sunbathe without needing to cover up). Staff can also set up excursions, including snorkeling and dive trips to see whale sharks and manta rays.

DHIGURAH TOUR OPTIONS

  • Island Divers offers a whale shark safari, so you can have the best chance at viewing these gentle giants.
  • Parasail over the clear waters of the Indian Ocean—the clouds will cast mesmerizing patterns on the ocean floor, and you may even spot whale sharks or manta rays from above.
  • Learn to scuba dive and gain a deeper appreciation of the underwater world as you explore the dive sites of Alif Dhaal Atoll.

AFTERNOON: Beach time

Grab a Maldivian or western-style lunch at the hotel’s open air restaurant, or walk down the beach to Hermit’s , which is known for its fresh coconut ice cream. It’s a small island, and TME Retreats is near the middle, so after lunch stroll through the village and get your bearings (the village is on the north end of the island, while the southern part is known for its gardens and more resorts). Then head back to bikini beach for a swim in the clear water or join a snorkeling tour to see whale sharks, manta rays, and turtles.

Travelers say: “Our recommendations: spend a whole day on Dhigurah's sandbank, day visit to other local island Dhangeti (with local ferry), snorkeling and diving with Island Divers and day visiting at local resort island (you can arrange it with guys from TME.)” — @DejanK

EVENING: Sunsets over the ocean

If you’re in the mood for adventure, book a sunset fishing tour on a wooden dhoni. You’ll be taught traditional Maldivian fishing techniques and anything you catch will be barbecued for a delicious dinner. If you don’t have any luck, head to the village for dinner. The island is small, but there are several options. For a casual meal, Shell Cafe serves noodles and fried rice, while Malaveli Restaurant has ocean views and an extensive menu that runs from the ever-popular grilled tuna to nasi goreng, veggie chop suey, and (if you are craving a taste from home) hamburgers with fries.

maldives trip plan quora

MORNING: Move at your own pace

After a buffet breakfast at the hotel, it’s time to explore more of the atoll. Many of the privately owned resort islands in the area sell day passes, which gives you the chance to experience the opulence of a luxury hotel (or just get to relax by a pool with a cocktail). Depending on the day pass that you purchase, you’ll typically get access to a variety of amenities at the resort. Our pick for a day trip: Boutique Beach , which offers Maldivian cooking classes and diving trips.

Travelers say: “Many people stay on more than one island during their stay. I’ve done it a couple of times. I’d want, though, to be on an island at least five days before I considered a move. Some would be happy with less time though. If you pair up islands on the same atoll, it’s easier and cheaper to do a speedboat inter island transfer.” — @Kim_sunseeker

AFTERNOON: Explore an underwater world

Most resort day passes will include a lunch buffet—make sure you check with staff as to what time the buffet opens, and what your pass includes. The resort islands tend to import most of their food, so there might be more offerings than you’d find on local islands (even alcohol). After lunch, spend some time exploring the resort, and make sure to check out a set of snorkeling gear to explore the coral reefs surrounding the island. Alif Dhaal Atoll is renowned for its megafauna, including manta rays and whale sharks, but there’s lots of intricate coral and colorful fish to see as well.

In the Maldives, the reefs are threatened by the warming and acidification of the ocean, so various resorts have started coral propagation and nursery initiatives to help rebuild their house reefs. We’re also fans of LUX South Ari Atoll , which offers guests the chance to plant their own coral.

SOUTH ARI ATOLL TOUR OPTIONS

  • During this bucket list experience , you’ll get picked up on Dhigurah island and head out into the South Ari atoll to go snorkeling with whale sharks.
  • Or maybe you want to go private: On this eight-hour boat charter , you will explore the magnificent area of South Ari national park for whale sharks, manta rays, and dolphins.

EVENING: Learn about Maldivian culture

Head back to Dhigurah after a day of relaxation. Sports are often played in the central square of the villages once the temperature begins to drop, so make like a local and watch a spirited game of bashi—a game played by Maldivian women where a ball is hit backwards with a tennis racket. Soccer, volleyball, and badminton are also popular. You might get a chance to take in a boduberu performance, which combines drums and dancing.

maldives trip plan quora

MORNING: Luxury without limits

Directly across Alif Dhaal Atoll from Dhigurah is the kind of private island that made the Maldives famous. What many people don’t realize is it’s possible to book short, two or three night stays at these luxury resorts–which is the way local Maldivians do it.

For those who want to wind up the week with something special, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island offers everything you could dream of (and some things you wouldn’t think to dream of). For those traveling with children, their family island of Rangali-Finolhu includes activities for kids and teens, including ocean excursions, cooking workshops, and sports. The neighboring Rangali Island is adult-only.

Travelers say: “What an unforgettable experience to dine under the Indian Ocean watching all the sharks and fishes swimming around you. A must go attraction if staying in the resort . Expensive for dinner ($400+/person) and lunch ($200+/ person.) But you can do the 1 hour cocktail hour too ($120/person) for a drink and appetizers. Make sure to make reservations 1 week before your arrival as they only have limited business hours.” –@KelvinA

AFTERNOON: Treat yourself

Begin your stay with pampering at one of the resort’s two spas—the smaller, Over Water Spa offers a series of rituals in accordance with the time of day and the state of mind you’re seeking. If you’ve been over-exposed to the tropical sun, indulge in the Sun Soother; a body wrap, facial and scalp massage, and serum application work to calm and heal your skin. Their expansive Spa Retreat offers more traditional spa services, including deep tissue massages and haircuts. Afterwards, keep the relaxation going at the Mandhoo Spa Restaurant , where you’ll find an organic menu inspired by the four elements (and plants).

EVENING: Back below the water

The resort is home to ten different restaurants, with something to appeal to everyone. The prize for novelty goes to Ithaa . The first underwater restaurant in the world, it’s located 16 feet below sea level, where guests dine in a reverse aquarium. For dinner, the restaurant offers a set menu which changes frequently, but they always work to incorporate local flavors within the meal. While you dine, watch as fish and other aquatic life glides by. If you can’t get enough of being underwater, consider the wild opulence of the Muraka—an underwater residence where the master bedroom has a 180° view of the ocean above.

The Quiet Zone Pool at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

MORNING: Don’t fill up at breakfast–there’s plenty more to do!

Head to the breakfast buffet at Atoll Market , where you’ll dine on the beach, surrounded by the soft scent of frangipani blossoms. Besides the live cooking stations where you can fill up on waffles or omelets, you’ll also find a featured curry-of-the-day, a sushi bar, and plenty of pastries, fruit, and hot dishes. If you’re not too full, take advantage of one of the daily yoga sessions.

AFTERNOON: Artistic education

Visit the newly launched Nerulhu Auah cultural village; established on Rangali Island, the cultural village gives guests a sense of life in a traditional Maldivian village. Local women prepare a buffet of Maldivian specialities, including fish curries and grilled seafoods, and showcase Maldivian artworks. Maldivian artwork typically works with natural materials, so you’ll see coral carvings and reed weaving. Later, take a break from the salty sea with a visit to one of the several pools on the property—the Quiet Zone pool is actually set into the ocean, so you can feel as if you’re swimming in the lagoon.

EVENING: A whole new world

There are a few options for dinner—if you’re in the mood for decadence and innovation, Koko Grill offers an (expensive!) multicourse, Japanese menu. The menu takes advantage of the wealth of fresh seafood that you can find in the Maldives, serving up sashimi, teppanyaki, and tempura. Watch your meal be prepared at your table, while the Indian Ocean stretches out in front of you. For a more laid back experience, Rangali Bar has classic—yet still luxurious—beach bar vibes, and a Mediterranean-inspired menu.

Once the sun sets, you can head out for some night time snorkeling. In the darkness, coral blooms, and eels and octopus emerge. You’ll find a wildly different environment, and get to see a side of the reef that most people never experience.

Travelers say: “Love this place! We had our cocktails served here before dining at the Koko Grill! We tried the sparkling sake which was a first for us! Service is amazing.” –@sophiewise

Whale Shark at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

MORNING: Get ready to glow

For those who want to keep trying new things, head to Vilu Restaurant and Bar for breakfast—it has a quieter feel than Atoll Market, and offers an excellent a la carte breakfast menu with both Western and Japanese options, as well as a breakfast buffet with cold options. At the Spa Retreat, refresh with a facial (the Hydration of Bisses option is perfect for emphasizing that post-vacation glow).

AFTERNOON: The sweetest sharks around

If you haven’t seen a whale shark yet, choose the Whale Shark Talk and Tour excursion that the resort offers. After an educational discussion, you’ll head out with your guide to search for the massive creatures, and have the chance to swim alongside them. If you’d rather spend more time in the water on your own, grab some snorkeling gear to check out the house reef—depending on your flight time, you won’t be able to scuba dive, as you need 24 hours of surface time before your flight. Say goodbye to the resort with a delicious lunch at Ufaa , where traditional Chinese cuisine including hand-pulled noodles and flavorful hotpots is served in a cozy teahouse.

EVENING: Say goodbye in style

Fly back to Male, and watch the glittering expanse of the ocean, far below. Once you arrive, take a stroll to Sultan Park to visit the National Art Gallery . It’s a small gallery, but features work from Maldivian artists who highlight the country’s vulnerability to climate change and other natural disasters. Grab a relaxed dinner of dosa and biryani at Khalids Biriyani before your flight. Hail a taxi and head to the airport to bid farewell to the Maldives.

Travelers say: “Taxi fares in Malé: within Malé 25Mrf, within Hulhumalé 25Mrf, Malé to airport or vice versa 65Mrf, Malé to Hulhumalé or vice versa 75Mrf, Hulhumalé to airport or vice versa 65Mrf.” –@SilentHunter_mv

Know Before You Go

The resort islands are open year-round, welcoming visitors to the perpetual warmth of the Maldives. Although the country stays hot all year, the rainy season runs from May to November. There will be more clouds, but it’s also a much more affordable time to visit. September sees the most rain, but also the lowest prices—if you’re looking to experience life in a quiet village, this is an excellent time to visit. If you visit during the month of Ramadan (which falls in March and April), be aware that many restaurants will be closed on local islands and on Male, but resort islands will be unaffected.

Visitors typically stay at least a week in the Maldives, due to its remote location. If you’re not staying on a resort island, you’ll notice a slightly different weekly schedule—the weekend is Friday and Saturday, with a business week of Sunday to Thursday. Many businesses will be closed on Friday for the afternoon prayer hours between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Banks and businesses typically close by 2 p.m., but shops and other retail stores stay open into the evening. They’ll often close for 15 minute intervals around prayer times, but it’s easy to know when prayers are happening—you’ll hear the adhan (call to prayer) from the muezzins echoing through the streets.

Near Male, there are several atolls with places to stay that will suit your interests and budget.

Alif Dhaal Atoll : Want to get a deep insight into Maldivian culture and relax in a peaceful village? Head to a local island. Alif Dhaal Atoll has several inhabited islands with guesthouses, and is popular with divers who come to search for whale sharks.

Haa Dhaalu Atoll : You could also head north to this remote atoll where colorful traditional fishing boats fill the clear water.

Baa Atoll : Those in search of luxury will find it in the Baa Atoll region, with plenty of private resort islands.

Due to how spread out the Maldives is, getting around can be a little confusing. You’ll arrive at Velana International Airport, the country’s main airport, before you can transit anywhere else. If you’re heading straight to a resort, staff will coordinate with you to arrange travel via a short flight, or a speedboat. There are also local ferries which can transport you to inhabited islands (they don’t serve resort islands). Be aware that their schedule can be unreliable, and they are a slow way to travel. For getting around the main island of Male, the small size means it’s convenient for walking, or you can easily find a taxi.

Your Trip to the Maldives: The Complete Guide

maldives trip plan quora

Made up of nearly 1,200 coral islands strung north to south in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is one of the most popular beach destinations on the planet. Known for world-class diving, miles of empty white-sand beaches, and resorts oozing with luxury, the Maldives isn’t always the most budget-friendly destination (though bargains can be found). But if you’re looking for mind-blowing sunsets, sugary sand, and the most turquoise water you’ve ever seen, break out your credit card and book a flight. Read on for our complete Maldives visitor’s guide, and learn the best places to stay, eat, dive, and explore in this spectacular tropical locale.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time To Visit: In true tropical island style, temperatures in the Maldives average 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) year-round, and there are only two main seasons; dry and wet. The dry season comes in fall and winter, from November through April, with temperatures ranging from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). The low, monsoon season runs from May through October, with the wettest month usually falling in June. Temperatures in the rainy season range from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

Getting Around: As an island nation spread across hundreds of miles of the ocean, it’s only natural that boats are the country’s transport mainstay, so prepare your sea legs (or Dramamine). For those staying near the capital or attempting a more budget holiday, ferries are offered between some of the more populated islands in the Malé Atoll capital area. Speedboat taxis can be hired for short-distance island hopping, and private resort speedboats whisk guests away to properties in the immediate vicinity. For resorts set in distant atolls, further transport will be via seaplane or a domestic flight to one of the more far-flung airports followed by speedboat transfer to the resort.

Travel Tip: Many visitors to the Maldives must travel by seaplane to reach their final destination, so it’s important to note that seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. If your flight arrives after dark, consider staying at a nearby hotel on either Hulhulé Island or in nearby Malé city.

Things to Do

This is a country surrounded by water, water, and more water, so it's only natural that water sports have emerged as the leading activity in the Maldives. Landlubbers can bask in the sun on deserted sandbanks, or perhaps spend the day in one of the dozens of spas dotted at upmarket resorts throughout the nation.

  • Diving: Some of the world's best diving can be found in the Maldives' coral atolls. Spot whale sharks and manta rays from May through November in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, or dive deep with octopi and reef sharks to explore some of the area's famed shipwrecks.
  • Water sports: Snorkeling, stand-up paddle, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and every other water sport imaginable are available year-round. Most resorts include access to non-motorized water sports equipment, and the larger populated islands generally have water sports rental facilities.
  • Spa experiences: The Maldives is home to some of the most indulgent hotel spas in the world. These havens of tranquility offer everything from Thai massages set in overwater villas, to underwater treatment rooms, to complete detox, rejuvenation, or restoration packages. Most resorts have a spa on the property, so it's only a matter of choosing which will best suit your budget and relaxation desires.
  • Nothing: Perhaps the ultimate activity of all in the Maldives is doing absolutely nothing. This definition of "nothing" means laying on a sun lounger on one of the country's best beaches , staring into the sea-green distance while sipping ice-cold coconut water and reading a novel.

What to Eat and Drink

Maldivian cuisine borrows mainly from India and Sri Lanka, which both highlight hot, spicy flavors. But in the Maldives, what you’ll eat largely depends on where you stay. High-end resorts offer a variety of a la carte local and international fare in a host of luxurious settings, including in overwater and underwater restaurants .

Budget resorts are more likely to provide buffet meals with both Western and Asian options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also small local eateries and cafes on many of the inhabited islands, purveying specialties such as fish cakes, soups, and curries.

Alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives (except for tourists at licensed hotels and resorts), so don’t expect to wash down your curry with a beer in any of the local establishments. Many of the more upmarket resorts, however, have full bars, and even wine cellars with hundreds of vintages to choose from.

Where to Stay

If visitors stay in the city of Malé, it’s rarely for more than one night, as there’s not much going on in the capital other than commerce, a few restaurants, and a museum or two. Most visitors stay in one of the dozens of resorts, which are often set on private islands in one of the country’s myriad coral atolls.

Accommodations vary widely in the Maldives, from rustic local guesthouses to some of the world’s most expensive resorts. If you’re on a budget, there are a handful of guesthouses and small hotels in many of the inhabited islands, such as in the North Malé Atoll or Ari Atoll.

There are also a variety of all-inclusive resorts, which range widely in quality. Check out Adaaran Prestige Vadoo , which is only 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport and has overwater villas with private pools, or the chic design and five restaurants at LUX* South Ari Atoll .

The Maldives’ lineup of five-star resorts are the stuff holiday dreams are made of. Postcard-perfect beaches, overwater villas, serene spas, and private butlers are only a taste of what to expect should you choose to splurge. Some of the most popular (and expensive) options include chains such as the Four Seasons , St. Regis , and the Six Senses , plus properties like Soneva Jani , which features massive overwater villas with private pools and waterslides, or Huvafen Fushi Maldives which has the world’s first and only underwater spa.

Getting There

The gateway to the Maldives is Velana International Airport (MLE), formerly Malé International Airport, which is set on an island adjacent to the capital city of Malé. Upon arrival, the best transport mode depends on where you’re staying. A bridge connects the airport (on Hulhulé Island) to adjacent Malé city, or there are taxis, speedboat taxis, and regularly scheduled (though not always on time) ferries.

The Maldives’ seafaring past and Indian Ocean location means the remote country has been heavily influenced by its closest neighbors, India and Sri Lanka, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa. Many visitors will only see the surroundings of their chosen resort, but the Maldives possesses cultural treasures on the local islands and in Malé that are also worth exploring.

  • One of the oldest mosques in the Maldives is the Malé Hukuru Miskiy, or Old Friday Mosque, which was built from ornately carved coral in 1658. The mosque is set on Hulhulé Island, an easy taxi ride from the airport.
  • The Maldives National Museum in Malé is a compact yet illuminating repository for the country’s prized artifacts. Displays range from ancient to modern times and contain everything from religious carvings to whale skeletons to lacquered wood boxes handmade by Maldivian craftspeople.
  • Across Sultan Park from The Maldives National Museum is The National Art Gallery. Established in 1999, this relatively new museum houses collections of Maldivian art from both past and present.

Money-Saving Tips

  • May through October is monsoon season in much of Southeast Asia, and the Maldives is no exception. Although summer can sometimes bring heavy rainfall and severe storms, most often there are only afternoon showers, and risking a visit during these monsoon months (particularly June, considered the wettest month) means deep discounts compared to visiting the country during the peak season.
  • Since alcohol is heavily taxed and marked-up in the Maldives, a drinks bill at the end of your trip can pose a hefty surprise. To keep the holiday stress-free and the umbrella drinks coming, consider choosing an all-inclusive package if you plan to indulge in adult libations during your stay.

Paradise personified. Heaven on earth. Screensaver goals. The Maldives has earned a lot of monikers since it opened to tourists in the 1970s.

Over the past 50 years, it’s become known as a honeymoon hot spot, a family-friendly getaway and one of the world’s most coveted vacation destinations.

And while it may seem like a lot of hype for one small, spread-out island nation in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives really does live up to it. From coconut-fringed islands and colorful reefs to warm smiles and even warmer curries, it’s often a once-in-a-lifetime getaway for travelers. Whether you’re heading off to a ritzy private island resort or a more affordable local island, there’s a handful of things to know before departure. Here are our top tips and best advice ahead of a trip to the Maldives.

1. Plan for at least 5 nights in the Maldives

For all travelers, it takes a plane ride or three to land in this far-flung slice of paradise. So, while a weekend to the Maldives may work for travelers based in Asia, five nights will suffice if you’re crunched for time and budget. And if neither is an issue, plan for at least a week to fully unwind and embrace island life.

A seaplane glides through the sky above small islands and islets in the middle of a blue ocean

2. You can get around via seaplane or speedboat

When choosing your island resort, pay attention to whether it’s reachable by seaplane or speedboat. Although seaplane transfers give picture-worthy views of the pearl-shaped atolls, they often cost much more. And be aware there’s a 25kg (55lbs) total luggage per person allowance on seaplanes. So, if you’re looking to save money, pick a resort closer to Male that you can transfer to via speedboat. You can also take a domestic flight to another atoll in the Maldives and a speedboat to the resort.

3. Island-hopping is doable (and encouraged)

Many travelers spend weeks poring over which private island resort is the best for them, but you don’t have to choose one. Beach bums can split their time between resorts. You’ll need to travel back to Male airport, where a representative from your next resort will meet you and transfer you there via seaplane or speedboat. If the resorts are close together, you can charter a speedboat from one resort to another.

4. Aim to land in Male in the morning

If you’re staying at a resort accessible by seaplane transfer, arriving in the morning is crucial. Once the sun sets, seaplanes stop flying, so you’d need to stay overnight in Male or Hulhumale to wait for the next seaplane. If your resort is accessible via a speedboat or water taxi, arriving at night is less of an issue, but the Maldives scenery is so stunning you’ll want to be able to see it.

5. Understand “island time”

These tiny private islands operate by their own rules, including their own time zones. Some resorts will ask guests to set their clocks to “island time,” an hour forward to give them an extra hour of sunlight for snorkeling or swimming .

6. Stock up well (there are no grocery stores for tourists)

There are no grocery stores or Walmarts on these tiny private islands. So, triple-check that you’ve got everything you need, including reef-safe sunscreen to help protect one of the Maldives’ most precious natural habitats. Every resort has a boutique store where you can pick up necessities you may have forgotten, but prices are often insanely expensive.

7. Familiarize yourself with the prohibited items list

The Maldives is a devout Muslim country with strict rules. So travelers entering cannot bring alcohol, pornographic materials, pork products or idols of worship  among other things . If anything prohibited is found, it will be taken away on arrival.

8. Local islands are a bargain but come with caveats

The local islands are a great and safe option for travelers on a budget and those not willing to shell out thousands for an island getaway. Small Maldivian-run guesthouses offer a much more intimate look at daily life, but there are a few things to know first. Alcohol is illegal on local islands, so don’t expect to enjoy a beer by the beach. Travelers must also dress conservatively on local islands by covering their shoulders and knees. Women don’t need to cover their heads, but wearing a bathing suit outside of designated “bikini beaches” is not allowed and could land you with a fine.

9. There’s no standard tipping etiquette

Tipping on top of your restaurant bill at the resort is not expected because a 10% tip is already included. However, if you want to leave something for your favorite server at the end of your stay that is more than OK. Guests can also write a review calling out their favorite team members; management often rewards staff for stellar service. Leaving a tip ranging from US$2 to US$10 per day for housekeeping is also customary. And if you have a butler, tipping 10% of the cost of your stay is a good rule.

10. You can pay in USD

The local currency is the Maldivian rufiya, but US dollars are also accepted. You can get some local currency from the ATM at the airport on arrival. If you want to exchange money for rufiya, you can do so in the airport at the Bank of Maldives Foreign Exchange. Keep your receipt with you so you can change anything extra back into your local currency when you leave.

11. Resort doctors can help with health concerns

The vast majority of travelers will go straight from the plane to a private island resort. Should you have any health issues during your stay, the on-island doctor will be able to assist you.

12. There is a “green tax” for tourists

Every tourist is charged a government tax to stay in a hotel, liveaboard or guesthouse. The tax is US$6 per day unless you’re staying in a guesthouse on a local island with 50 or fewer registered rooms, then the tax is US$3 per day. The charge will be included in your overall bill.

13. Sustainability initiatives are everywhere

As the world’s lowest-lying country, the Maldives is under serious threat from climate change. Nearly every resort has sustainability initiatives, which might include coral regeneration, onsite gardens, turtle rehabilitation and/or unique mosquito trapping methods instead of chemical spraying. A few of the more sustainable resorts to choose from are Soneva , Six Senses , Four Seasons , Kudadoo and Gili Lankanfushi . Beware of greenwashing , where organizations claim sustainability credentials that aren't as impactful as they suggest.

Maldives Itinerary: The Ultimate Guide to Local Islands and Resort Islands

Maldives itinerary.

Maldives Itinerary

Close your eyes and imagine a tropical paradise. What do you see? White sand beaches, crystal clear waters and swaying palm trees? Well we found Paradise – Maldives! I had the impression that it’s an overhyped and overpriced destination but I was wrong. The hype is totally worth it. We’ve island hopped in the Mediterranean, Indonesia and Thailand but Maldives has hands down the clearest waters we’ve seen. The marine life in particular is unbelievable. With over 200 islands to choose from, narrowing down on a few islands was a struggle. Even more since we wanted to combine both local islands and a resort island. Are you planning to visit Maldives and not sure which island to visit? Don’t worry, we’ve been there. We hope this Maldives itinerary helps you plan an ultimate trip to the Maldives whether it’s locals islands, a resort island or a combination of both.

Our 10 day Maldives Itinerary

Maldives itinerary day 1 – hulhumale.

Although we could have taken a speedboat to a far away local island, we decided to spend the night in Hulhumalé after landing in Male airport.

We purchased a local sim card and some local currency (Maldivian Rufiyaa) from Velana International Airport. The Dhiraagu Traveller Plus sim card cost USD 35. It gave 150 mins local calls and SMS and 17 GB data, valid for 30 days. Basically this was the cheapest option and as all the guest houses and resorts have wifi, this was sufficient. By and large, Maldives is an expensive country so do bear that in mind.

Hulhumale is an artificial island located near Malé, the capital city of the Maldives. It’s worth visiting if you’re interested in seeing another side of the country, as it offers a unique blend of modern city life and traditional Maldivian culture.

We pretty much walked around the city the whole day, explored the sights, and got a feel of the local Maldivian life. This is something we enjoy doing and even more so on the first day. After all, it’s an excellent way to get an immersive experience of a new city.

maldives trip plan quora

How to reach Hulhumale?

We booked an airport pick up via our hotel as we wanted the first bit of our trip to be seamless. Though this tends to be pricey, we always opt for this option on our first day in a country we aren’t familiar with. We started doing this after a few unpleasant experiences in South East Asia. It cost us USD 20 from Male airport to our hotel in Hulhumale. However if you take a taxi from outside the airport it will cost you around USD 10.

Things to do in Hulhumale

  • Hulhumale Beach: Hulhumale has a picturesque beach. Surprisingly the water was clear despite it being a city beach.
  • Explore the Hulhumale Mosque: The Hulhumale Mosque is a beautiful and historic mosque located in the heart of the island. Also, it is one of the largest mosques in the Maldives and is known for its beautiful architecture and design.
  • Central Park: Hulhumale’s Central Park is a lush green space in the centre of the island, offering a perfect spot for picnics and relaxation. Additionally it has the largest musical fountain ever built in the Maldives. Visit it during sunset for a leisurely stroll like the locals. Children especially will have a gala time.
  • Cafe / Restaurant hopping: Hulhumale has several restaurants offering a variety of local and international cuisine. We had dinner at the Amber Beach Hotel . The food was average but the rooftop restaurant had splendid sea views.
  • Water sports: Finally water activities. There are several operators offering snorkelling, diving, island visits and so on. We wouldn’t recommend you to do these in Hulhumale as the local islands are way more scenic.

Where to stay in Hulhumale?

Choose any hotel on the beach road. It was just a night stay for us therefore we chose a budget option at Chen Beach Hotel . It amounted to USD 75 with breakfast. Overall we were happy with the room, service and breakfast. Furthermore the airport pick up was smooth and they arranged for a local taxi back to Male. The other hotels that we were considering were Season Holidays and H78 Maldives .

Average price per night: USD 75 – USD 150

Is it worth going to Hulhumale?

Summing up, we enjoyed our time in Hulhumale. It’s not the classic Maldives that you think of, so if you have limited time, don’t include it in your Maldives itinerary. All in all, it’s good for a wee stop-over near the airport to get an insight about the local life in Maldives.

Maldives Itinerary Day 2 to Day 4 – Ukulhas

Our final Maldives itinerary took months of research to finalise. Chiefly because we wanted to explore 2 local islands, 1 resort island along with Hulhumale and Male. As for the local islands, our main criteria was – it should be scenic, quiet and have an excellent beach. Additionally, it shouldn’t be too far from Male. Given these points and after reading 100’s of blogs and watching several youtube videos, we chose Ukulhas.

Bikini beach at Ukulhas, Maldives

Why choose Ukulhas?

  • Beautiful beach – It has one of the largest and undeniably the most beautiful bikini beaches on a local island in Maldives. The beach is over 1 km long and there are plenty of sun beds and umbrellas. Moreover the beach is regularly cleaned and didn’t feel crowded even in peak season. In fact lot of secluded spots that will make it feel like your own private beach.
  • Excellent house reef – Meanwhile the house reef is excellent for snorkelling. We saw huge schools of a wide variety of fish.
  • Quiet island – By and large it had the typical laidback, quiet island feeling.
  • Sustainable tourism – It is one of the most environmental friendly islands in the Maldives. For instance single use plastic is banned so you won’t find any plastic waste on the island.
  • Hotels with beach access – Several hotels have direct access to the beach but only a few have sea view. Given that, a direct beach access from our guest house was fantastic.
  • Local culture – Ukulhas is not as developed as some of the other more touristy islands in the Maldives so still pretty much a hidden paradise.
  • Great island for families – All in all this island is a perfect place for young families as the distance from the beach to hotels is a maximum of 100 m and the waters are shallow.
  • Clean island – We walked all around the island and didn’t see any garbage. Certainly one of the cleanest local islands in the Maldives.

How to reach Ukulhas?

We took a speedboat from Male airport to Ukulhas. It costs USD 50 per head and takes around 2 hours. They run everyday.

There timing are as follows:

  • Velana International Airport to Ukulhas : 10:30
  • Velana International Airport to Ukulhas : 16:30
  • Ukulhas / Rasdhoo / Airport : 07:00
  • Ukulhas / Rasdhoo / Airport : 13:00

Your guesthouse / hotel will arrange your speedboat transfer if you inform them about your arrival time at least a few days before your trip. You need to pay the speedboat captain directly.

There are public ferries operating as well, although they run only twice every week. It takes 4 hours instead of 2.

Male to Ukulhas – Every Monday and Thursday – at 9:00 am from Hulhumale Ferry Terminal in Male. Tickets can be purchased for 5 USD from Hulhumale Ferry Terminal.

Ukulhas to Male – Every Sunday and Wednesday – 9:45 am from Ukulhas Jetty. Tickets can be purchased inside the Ferry. No pre-reservation is required.

Additionally, you can check out the Atoll Transfer website to check and book ferries and speedboats to chalk your Maldives itinerary.

Maldives itinerary

Where to stay in Ukulhas?

  • SeaLaVie Inn – We stayed at SeaLaVie, a small 5 bedroom guest house in the quiet part of Ukulhas. The room was spacious and sparkling clean. Best part of course was the location, just a minute walk to the bikini beach. We took the half board package which overall was a good deal. Breakfast was served at SeaLaVie and dinner was at Fisherman’s boat restaurant. We loved the traditional Maldivian breakfast as well as the buffet dinner. You can book your stay here – Book SeaLavie Price: USD 320 for a couple for 3 nights including breakfast and dinner.
  • Ranthari Hotel and Spa – If you are looking for a luxury hotel with a pool then consider Ranthari. This is especially amazing if you want to get a slice of luxury on a local island. Since we had a resort island booked we preferred a more local guest house experience. You can book your stay here – Book Ranthari

Ukulhas is surely not the cheapest local island. You’d find hotels and activities at a fraction of this cost in islands like Maafushi but after reading about over tourism there, we thought its best to avoid them.

Where to eat in Ukulhas?

  • Fisherman’s Boat – We had all our dinners here as it was part of our half board plan. The buffet spread was great with cut fruits, breads, meat, veg and desserts. Moreover there was a decent vegetarian spread as well.
  • Sapore Restaurant & Pizzeria – Another wonderful option in case you are bored of rice and noodles everyday.

To sum up we loved Ukulhas and it is undoubtedly our favourite local island. We highly recommend you to add this to your Maldives itinerary.

Maldives Itinerary Day 5 and 6 – Rasdhoo

We hopped on a 15 minute speed boat from Ukulhas to Rasdhoo. We chose Rasdhoo as it was on the same atoll and easy to get to from Ukulhas.

maldives trip plan quora

Why choose Rasdhoo?

  • Accessibility – Situated in North Ari Atoll, 60 km west of Male, it’s just an hour and half speedboat ride away which in particular makes it convenient travel wise.
  • Good budget option – In general we found the accommodation and food options to be cheaper than Ukulhas.
  • Snorkeling – Rasdhoo is excellent for snorkelling around the house reef even though we preferred the bikini beach at Ukulhas.
  • Sandbank and uninhabited islands nearby – A 5 minute boat ride from Rasdhoo island, lies silky white sandbank surrounded by turquoise waters at Madivaru Finolhu. In essence this is the main draw of Rashdoo and can be a unique experience.
  • Dolphin safari – Between Rasdhoo and Thoddoo there is a place where a group of dolphins gather in the evenings. Certainly worth doing this as well.

How to reach Rasdhoo?

We took a 10 min speedboat from Ukulhas to Rasdhoo at 7:00 am. Price is USD 10 per head.

The speedboat timings are as follows. They run everyday.

  • Velana International Airport to Rasdhoo : 10:30
  • Velana International Airport to Rasdhoo : 16:00
  • Rasdhoo / Airport : 07:30
  • Rasdhoo / Airport : 13:30

Male to Rasdhoo – Every Monday and Thursday – at 9:00 am from Hulhumale Ferry Terminal in Male. Tickets can be purchased for 3.50 USD from Hulhumale Ferry Terminal.

Rasdhoo to Male – Every Sunday and Wednesday – 9:45 am from Ukulhas Jetty. Tickets can be purchased inside the Ferry. No pre-reservation is required.

Your guest house / hotel will arrange your transfer.

Where to stay in Rasdhoo?

  • Acqua Blu Rasdhoo – Clean budget guesthouse with friendly staff. Great location and they offer several activities as well.
  • Holiday Garden Rasdhoo – Another hotel with good reviews that you could consider.

Where to eat in Rasdhoo?

  • Lemon Drop – Quiet restaurant with a lovely vibe. We had pizzas and some refreshments.
  • Alimente – Cool spot for coffee and cakes

To summarise, Rasdhoo ticks all the boxes for a budget Maldivian getaway with superb excursions and activities. A fab option for your Maldives itinerary.

Maldives Itinerary Day 7 to 10 – Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa

Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa, Maldives

A 5 star resort island, an overwater villa, endless views of crystal clear turquoise waters, high quality food and a taste of ultimate luxury – this is the quintessential Maldivian holiday of dreams. Our Maldives itinerary felt truly complete with this experience. To clarify we are not luxury travellers but decided to splurge for this experience. Was it worth it?

Maldives Itinerary Day 11 – Male

We spent our final day in Male before flying back home the next afternoon. Male is the capital and the biggest city of Maldives. It’s a wonderful way to understand how real life in Maldives looks like.

Male capital city of Maldives

Things to do in Male

  • Visit the mosques – Visit the Hukuru Miskiy and King Salman mosques to get a glimpse of Maldivian architecture.
  • Tsunami Monument – The memorial was built to pay homage to the victims of a tsunami that hit Maldives in 2004. It was peaceful during sunset.
  • National Museum – This museum has a collection of artefacts dating back to the pre-Islamic period of the Maldives.
  • Local Market – Walk around the bustling local markets to experience the local culture.
  • Try local cuisine – Try the delicious seafood, coconut-based dishes, and traditional curries.
  • Relax on the beach – Go for a leisurely walk on the 2 artificial beaches in Male. It’s definitely not as pretty as the ones in faraway islands but worth visiting nonetheless.

Is it worth visiting Male?

You could definitely spend a day to understand the local culture if you have the time. If you are visiting for less than a week, then skip it from your Maldives itinerary. It’s good for an overnight pit-stop before or after your trip to the local / resort islands.

Where to stay in Male?

Since we just had a night we chose a budget hotel The Grand View . Small, basic clean room, no complaints. Other hotels that we considered were Manhattan Business Hotel and The Somerset Hotel .

Hope you find our Maldives itinerary helpful to plan your holiday. Read along for more tips for Maldives.

Maldives FAQ’s

Best local islands in the maldives.

If you have around 10-12 days in the Maldives, you can include 2-3 islands in your Maldives itinerary. Our top picks for local islands are Ukulhas, Rasdhoo, Fulidhoo, Dhigurah, Hanimaadhoo and Vaadhoo. Then again, Dhigurah, Vaadhoo and Hanimaadhoo are very far from Male so choose wisely. The following tips will help you select the islands of your choice.

How to choose a local island in Maldives?

Choosing a local island can be a unique way to experience the Maldives. But with over a 100 local islands to choose from, narrowing down to 2 was not easy. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a local island:

Best local island in Maldives

  • Distance from Male: Consider the location of the island in relation to the capital city of Male and other islands you may want to visit. Distances can be large so this will affect the travel time as well as budget.
  • Accommodation options: Choose an island based on the accommodation options available to suit your budget and preferences. Some local islands may have guesthouses, hotels, or resorts, while others may only have a few basic options. Some islands are more expensive than others so compare before booking.
  • Activities: Consider the activities available on the island and nearby areas. Some local islands are famous for snorkelling, diving, surfing, or other water sports, while others may have more cultural or historical attractions to explore.
  • Accessibility: Check the transportation options to the island, including ferries, speedboats, and domestic flights. Some islands may be more difficult to access than others.
  • Budget: Finally, consider your budget as it has to cover the costs for island transfer, accommodation, food and activities. Local islands are more affordable than staying at a resorts, but the costs are not uniform across islands.

We enjoyed Ukulhas and Rasdhoo and strongly suggest to include at least 1 local island in your Maldives itinerary.

How to do Maldives on a budget?

The first image that comes to mind while thinking of Maldives is that of ultimate luxury – sipping champagne in an infinity pool from an over water villa. Of course this experience is unique and wonderful but it’s not the only way to explore Maldives. Most important, luxury resorts are insanely expensive. Since we stayed in both local and resort islands, we can vouch that both were equally special. But if budget is the constraint, then the following tips will help to plan a trip to the Maldives without breaking the bank.

Maldives on a budget

1) Choose local island / islands

The local islands in the Maldives officially opened for tourism in 2009, when the Maldivian government introduced a guesthouse program to promote tourism outside of the resort islands. Stay in a guesthouses on local islands instead of expensive resort islands.

2) Travel cheaper

Opt for local transport: Instead of taking seaplanes or speedboats to get around, consider taking the public ferry. While they may be slower, they are much more affordable than private transfers. For example: A speedboat cost USD 10 from Ukulhas to Rasdhoo whereas the local ferry cost just USD 1. Although keep in mind that public ferries do not run everyday so plan your trip accordingly.

3) Eat local

Eat at local restaurants: Instead of dining at fancy restaurants, try local cafes and restaurants, which offer delicious food at affordable prices.

4) Research activities and compare prices

Book excursions and activities directly with local providers: Scout for local providers for activities. Booking through hotels can be more expensive. If your main reason for traveling to Maldives is diving then hunt around for the best diving package deal in advance of your trip. Many guesthouses offer deals for stay and dive packages.

5) Choose your island wisely

The Maldives is made up of 26 natural atolls and each atoll has several islands. Some atolls are very far from Male so a speedboat transfer will be more expensive. Local ferry can take over 5-6 hrs and if you choose local islands in different atolls, you will have to come back to Male and take another speedboat / ferry. There are no direct transfers. From what we researched, the activities in the faraway islands like Dhigurah were more expensive than the others so factor this in as well. Lastly some islands like Maafushi, Fulidhoo have a better tourism infrastructure so tend to be cheaper.

6) Bring your own snorkelling gear

Most resorts and guesthouses offer masks, snorkels, fins and other motorised water-sports equipment to guests free of cost but for hygiene reasons it’s best to take your own snorkeling masks. We highly recommend getting the Easybreath Dive mask from Decathlon . This was one of our best purchases for sure.

7) Visit in low season

Some people suggest visiting Maldives in the off-season. This would certainly cut down your budget like anything. The resort island offer wonderful deals and are almost half price. But we read some awful experiences of storms and rains for the entire duration if the trip so it’s definitely a risk.

Best resorts in Maldives

When is the best time to visit Maldives?

November to April tends to be the best time for Maldives.

We visited in February and it was perfect – February and March are the driest months, with warm temperatures, low humidity and great visibility for diving and snorkelling. However this is peak season so the priciest months too. Book in advance to get a fair deal.

What is the cheapest month to visit Maldives?

May to September is the rainy season so high chances of cloudy days and storms but the cheapest time to visit Maldives. Resorts have amazing deals during this period and you can save a lot of money but bear in mind that the weather can be terrible and ruin your idea of a sunny beach vacay.

Do you need a visa to visit the Maldives?

Tourist visa is granted for all nationalities on arrival to the Maldives including Indian citizens. All you need is your passport, hotel reservations and a copy of traveller declaration on IMUGA .

Is vegetarian food available in the Maldives?

Plant based cuisine may sound like an anomaly in an island know for fresh sea food but certainly things are better now. If you decide to book a vegan luxury escape to the Maldives it’s best to contact your resort in advance to tell them you are vegan. Most local islands have vegetarian options as well.

Which island in Maldives has Bioluminescence?

Maldives trip

After sunset the turquoise waters of Maldives transformed into glittering sea of stars. It was a surreal display of light and motion with the whole ocean dancing and sparkling. This magical effect is caused by bioluminescent plankton that often appear in warm coastal waters. We were extremely lucky to witness this phenomenon in February in Ukulhas island.

They are notoriously difficult to predict, and mainly occur most often far out in the ocean so seeing them on the beach was other worldly. They say the best time to see bioluminescence is in between June and November but it’s difficult to plan a Maldives itinerary around this.

Top 10 things to do in the Maldives

1) free activities like snorkelling, swimming, walking along the wonderful beaches.

Maldives is one of the most amazing places for snorkelling with some of the best reefs in the world. Best part is that you don’t need to go deep to see the marine life which is especially fantastic for non-swimmers.

The Maldives has an abundance of marine life and the crystal clear waters offer incredible visibility. It’s one of the top scuba diving destinations with many affordable PADI dive centers where you can take a discovery dive if you are not certified. Scuba Diving cost in Maldives (approx): $70 to $150 per dive. Some of you probably would want to plan your whole Maldives itinerary around diving so best to check islands and operators offering good deals.

3) Sandbank visit

Most guesthouses and resorts offer sandbank excursions, which can include a picnic lunch, snorkelling gear, and a guide. It costs around $60-$120 depending on the group size and island you do it from.

4) Dolphin tours / sunset tours

You can go on a dolphin watching tour to see friendly dolphins. Cost around $100 per head. Even if you don’t go on a tour, do not miss the sunset. The sunsets are to die for.

5) Island hopping

You can hop around different islands as part of your Maldives itinerary especially if it’s a longer trip.

Maldives sunset

When you think of the Maldives, it’s probably the white sand beaches, turquoise waters and a relaxing holiday. You’ll find a spa in almost every island even the local ones. All resort islands have wellness centres with stunning views of the ocean. We did it in Male as the prices were affordable.

7) Over Water bungalow

As the name suggests, overwater bungalows are standalone bungalows positioned over the water. This is what the most people dream of when they think of a dream vacation. It’s insanely expensive but surely worth splurging for the once-in -a-lifetime kind of experience. Most packages are for a 3 nights stay so if you can afford it, add it to your Maldives itinerary.

Maldives is known to have some of the best beaches in the world. It’s the perfect tropical getaway.

9) Cultural Experiences

Resorts often organise tours to the local islands for experiencing local culture, food and the Maldivian way of life. However, you don’t need this if you stay in a local island.

10) Water sports

Lastly, Maldives is an incredible destination for indulging in some fun water activities. After all it has the most inviting waters and there is something for everyone – from peaceful kayaking to the adrenalin pumping flyboarding.

What to pack for the Maldives?

Maldives itinerary

Maldives is a Muslim country and the local islands (including Male) have a dress code therefore it’s offensive to reveal your shoulders and knees for both men and women. Men and Women can wear knee length shorts and t-shirts. You can wear swimwear and bikinis only in the designated bikini beaches in the local islands. Resort islands have no dress code so you can wear anything.

We went to a couple of local stores in Male and the islands. The swimwear and snorkelling gear were very expensive. With this in mind, do get clothes and swimwear before getting here.

  • Summer Dresses
  • Beach cover-ups
  • Shorts and T-shirts
  • Resort wear
  • Snorkeling gear
  • Scarf to cover up for the conservative local islands
  • Motion sickness tablets (speedboats can get very bumpy)
  • Flip flops and Dive shoes

What not to take in the Maldives?

Alcohol – Sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited in local islands and it is strictly forbidden to bring alcohol into the Maldives. All bags are scanned at the airport so do not purchase from duty free when flying into Maldives. Alcoholic drinks are only available on resort islands.

19 things to know before your first trip to the Maldives

By Shradha Shahani

Maldives

A sunny, breezy and crowd-free paradise--the Maldives is just a quick flight away without any visa hassles. But what they don't tell you about the tropical island is that the transfer and layover time and the many additional hidden costs can make or break your holiday experience. These tips and tricks will help you get the most out of your time in the island nation:

1. Resorts close to Malé work best for weekend trips

Fixed timings for seaplane and boat transfers mean you could end up spending anywhere between one to four hours at the airport, losing the day in transit. But, a host of hotels are just a quick zip from Malé. Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives (book here) , Pullman Maldives Maamutaa (book here ) , Grand Park Kodhipparu (book here) , One&Only Reethi Rah (book here) , Varu by Atmosphere (book here) and Ozen Reserve Bolifushi ( book here) are all between 15 to 40-minute boat rides from the city.

If you choose a hotel that is a seaplane ride away, check if they can schedule it according to your flight timings to avoid waiting for hours.

2. Not all resorts cover your seaplane/boat transfer cost

A seaplane transfer could cost anywhere from $270 (Rs19,669*) to $450 (Rs32,782*). Don't forget to check if a complimentary ride seaplane or boat transfer is part of your deal.

3. The cost of your holiday depends greatly on the season

The best part about the Maldives is that you can look forward to balmy, tropical weather almost all year round, with a chance of rain between the months of May to October. Expect some of the best deals during these off-season months.

4. Consider an all-inclusive resort

When you're in paradise, you can very quickly run a very high tab on those pina coladas, which is why it's best to choose a resort with an all-inclusive plan for meals and drinks. This would usually include a selection of spirits both at the bar and in your room (replenished once or twice a day) and all meals at the buffet and some of the speciality restaurants. Kudadoo Maldives Private Island (book here) , Ozen Reserve Bolifushi (book here) , Heritance Aarah Maldives (book here) and Centara Grand Island (book here) are just some of the many all-inclusive resorts here.

first trip to the Maldives

5. Some water sports may cost extra even at all-inclusive resorts

At many all-inclusive resorts, non-motorised sports such as paddle boating, kayaking, windsurfing and canoeing are inclusive of the plan. If you stay for three or four nights, they may also add snorkelling, dolphin spotting and a night of star-gazing into your deal. However, there are some resorts like the Kudadoo Maldives Private Island (book here) , where you won't have to worry about giving your room number at any stage because everything is part of your package.

6. An extra day can come for less

Many resorts tend to add additional deals such as a spa, a snorkelling session, sunset or dolphin cruise, a movie night under the stars, a dinner at a speciality restaurant if you spend over three nights at the property.

7. Some resorts have their own time zone

Maldives (MVT) is 30 minutes behind Indian Standard Time. However, some resorts have their own time zone (to give their guests some more daylight hours). So, they add about an hour or 1.5 hours to MVT. Check with your hotel, so you can schedule your departure in time to catch your flight.

8. You need to get tested for COVID before you enter the Maldives

An RT-PCR test must be taken at least 96 hours prior to departure. Children below the age of one are exempted. Note: Your test must have your passport number (Labs tend to ask for your Aadhar Card details if they don't know the purpose of your test, so don't forget to inform them).

You will also have to present an RT-PCR test no more than 96 hours old on your return journey. Factor in a day to receive the results. So if you're spending three nights in the Maldives, get tested on the second day. It's advisable to book your appointment with the lab on the island the day you reach in that case.

9. There's a bit of paperwork

Once you have received your test results, you are required to submit an online Traveller Health Declaration form within 24 hours prior to departure. The form includes some basic information, your flight details, health details, the countries you have travelled to in the past 15 days and a drive to upload your negative RT-PCR test. Once you're done, you will receive a QR code. Keep a screenshot handy to present at Malé airport on arrival. The same declaration form needs to be filled on your return, along with an Air Suvidha form to reenter India.

10. You may have to quarantine for a day—for a good reason

Some properties like Soneva Fushi may request you to quarantine for 24 hours in your villa until you get your test results, so you might not want to schedule anything for that day.

11. When it comes to packing, less is more

You don't need much to have a good time in the Maldives. A few swimsuits, kaftans and cover-ups, sunglasses, a beach bag, hat and sandals are more than enough. Of course, an SPF suntan lotion is the most important, but also add some aloe vera to cool your skin after a long day of beach bumming.

12. There are things you want to keep out of your bag…

The Maldives is an Islamic country. You are not allowed to bring idols of worship, religious books, pork and pork products, and alcohol.

13. Beach villas are just as good as water villas

Many people are often seduced by the idea of an overwater villa, but if you're a beach person, and especially if you're travelling with young children, a beach villa might be a better and safer option. Sand between your toes is a tangible luxury.

14. Not all resorts allow kids

Resorts such as Anantara Veli Maldives Resort ( book here) , Hurawalhi Island Resort (book here) and Kudadoo Maldives (book here) are adults-only resorts. Other resorts may welcome kids but not at the overwater villas—for safety reasons. Be sure to check with your resort before you book.

15. But there are plenty of options for kids as well…

Yes, the Maldives is best known for honeymoons. But there are many resorts specially designed for parents to put their feet up and relax. Kid's club with activities such as treasure hunts and pasta-making, and babysitting services, mean you can also slot in some spa time. When it comes to safety, most resorts are well-equipped with measures like railings and child-safety locks on the deck of the overwater villas. Families with young children, choose beach villas facing shallow island lagoons. Here are some great tips on travelling with your kids to the Maldives.

16. Some resorts are better for snorkelling than others

Check with the hotel on how far you need to go to spot marine life. Some islands in the Maldives are reclaimed, or artificial islands or have been affected by coral bleaching, and therefore offer a lower chance of spotting marine life. Some others, like The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort (book here) , Dhigufaru Island Resort (book here) , Dusit Thani Maldives (book here) and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru (book here) are close to Hanifaru Bay, where the world's largest congregation of manta rays takes place between June to October. The coral-clad reefs are healthy enough for you to just peep into the waters to spot fish.

17. If you plan to dive, factor in an extra day

It is recommended to wait for 12-24 hours before you get onto a plane after you have gone diving. This is because you could suffer from decompression sickness . For good order's sake, avoid flying out the day after you dive.

18. And if you love diving, consider a liveaboard experience

If exploring Maldives' coral reefs is topmost on your priority list, why not live on the water itself. Orca Dive Club organises luxury liveaboard experiences, where a boat is your base to set out on diving expeditions.

19. The Maldives is disappearing—so pick a resort that follows sustainable practices

Climate change has put the Maldives at serious risk. But many of the country's resorts are doing their bit to mitigate their impact on the environment. Soneva Fushi (book here) , Gili Lankanfushi (book here) , Kudadoo Maldives Private Island (book here) and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru (book here) employ several sustainable practices, from recycling plastic and glass onsite to using solar power and helping regenerate coral. Make the right choice—you want your kids to enjoy this paradise as well.

5 Days in the Maldives: The Ultimate Short-Stay Itinerary

5 days in the maldives

An independent island country in the north-central Indian Ocean, the Maldives comprises 1,200 small coral islets sprawling with greenery, marine life, and culture. With crystal clear waters and pristine beaches, the 200 inhabited islands make a blissful vacation spot for any traveler. But how long do you need in the country to get a real taste of Maldivian culture?

Aside from the fascinating landmarks and underwater scenery, the Maldives are a hotspot for water sports and adventure. Still, the islands are well-suited for a short stay and with a Maldives five-day itinerary you can get an exciting snippet of what the country has to offer.

Our guide looks at all the must-see sights in the Maldives, from the underwater fauna to the aquatic hotels, complete with the best places to eat and stay. These spots deserve a place on your holiday bucket list, and we’re going to show you how to squeeze it all into five days. Let’s get started.

Table of Contents

Day 1: Male City Sights and Baros Island

maldives harbour

Male or Malé is the island capital of the Maldives, which lies on the Male Atoll 400 miles southwest of Sri Lanka. Start your Maldives five-day itinerary by heading straight to Male. This shouldn’t be too hard as most international flights enter the country through Velana International Airport in North Male.

A short ferry ride from Velana will drop you off right in the vibrant center of the small city island. Stop off at the Royal Garden Café , adjacent to the Male Presidential Jetty, for a black ice tea and reset in the cool, air-conditioned interior. If you have luggage, they’ll even store it for you here in their secure locker room while you explore the city.

The dense city is easy to get around on foot, and the smells and sights will ignite all your senses. Male will give you a taste of the Muslim culture in the Maldives that can get easily silenced by the first-world luxuries on the quieter islands. Check out the Hukuru Miskiiy and the Tomb of Abu-Al-Barakaath to learn about the importance of Islam to Male. Just remember to wear modest clothing when visiting any of Male’s religious monuments as a sign of respect.

Finish in the early afternoon at the local food market that adjoins the November 3rd Memorial monument and enjoy a street food snack of Bis Keemiya, the Maldivian samosas, or Huni Roshi, the local chapati from any of the stalls. Then, make your way back to the central jetty and jump on a local speedboat to Baros Island. You can buy the ticket at the port, and they depart multiple times a day depending on demand. The journey is 25-minutes and will give you your first taste of the Maldives from the sea. Enjoy the wind in your hair and the sea spray on your face as your dart through the emerald waters to the private boutique island resort.

Baros Island Resort is a great place to stay, but you can spend the evening leisurely and catch a late speedboat out if your accommodation is elsewhere. If you are staying at the exclusive resort, now is the perfect time to check-in, freshen up and head out just in time for sunset.

Check out the Lighthouse Lounge Bar for champagne, jazz, and views of the sun disappearing behind the ocean. Then head to Piano for a unique dining experience in the middle of a lagoon. After chowing down on a superb local fusion dish like reef fish cutlets or fragrant fish curry, retire to a daybed to stargaze with your loved one and mark the end of your first day in the Maldives.

Day 2: Mirihi Island Snorkeling and Sunset Cruise

snorkelling in the maldives

Mirihi Island is another picturesque private island resort that is easy to fall in love with. World-class luxury, pristine white sands, and many dining options are set on the edge of lush palm forest. Mirihi is about an hour by speed boat from Male and Baros but can be reached by seaplane if you’re coming from the airport. The Mirihi Island Resort provides several island hopping and evening entertainment packages, but you don’t have to be a guest to soak up all this hotel has to offer.

Whether you are waking up on Mirihi or arriving from elsewhere, start the day with a mid-morning boat trip around the coral atolls for a chance to snorkel with whale sharks and manta rays. The crew knows the best spots to find these gentle ocean giants, and you’ll work up an appetite visiting the various reef swimming spots. Enjoy a locally caught seafood meal aboard your vessel, or head back to Mirihi for lunch.

The Dhonveli Restaurant in the resort serves a buffet lunch and dinner, and you can dip in and out of the ocean after eating, soaking up the sun, and enjoying an afternoon on the beach loungers fueled by fresh coconuts or craft cocktails from the restaurant bar. Finish the afternoon by setting sail on the Mirihi Sunset Cruise , where you’ll glide across the Indian Ocean on a luxury catamaran and, if you’re lucky, accompanied by a pod of dolphins. Listen to the sounds of live onboard music and take in panoramic views of the pink and golden sky.

Conclude the evening with dinner at the Muraka Restaurant on Mirihi, elevated on decking over the ocean, where you can enjoy a contemporary menu of wagyu beef and Maldivian lobster, complemented by imported wines.

Day 3: Huvanhendhoo Island Diving and Lily Beach Spa

water bungalow in the maldives

Like Mirihi, Huvanhendoo Island is situated on the South Ari Atoll and is renowned for its marine life. Huvanhendho occupies 600 by 100 meters of sandbanks and is surrounded by transparent lagoon waters set on powdery white sands. The island is even better known for the award-winning Lily Beach Resort , with a leading spa and established reputation for diving getaways and luxury honeymoons.

Huvanhedhoo is strategically located with its house reef just ten meters offshore. You won’t need a boat trip to explore the exceptional marine flora and fauna here. Still, Huvanhedhoo is the perfect location for your bucket list scuba dive. Whether you’re an avid diver or a first-timer, don your fins and grab an instructor for the best underwater vistas of the island and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

After exploring Huvanhedhoo’s marine life, it’s time to relax and visit the world-renowned Tamara Spa at Lily Beach . Enjoy some you time in the sanctuary’s open rooms, welcoming the ocean breeze and reveling in the sights of Huvanhendhoo’s underwater world through the glass floors. Indulge in the local practices with a full-body Ayurvedic Shirodhara Oil soak or enjoy a couples’ hot stone massage before taking in the ocean views from a petal-filled tub after your treatment.

After a few hours of pure relaxation, it’s time to shake off that lethargy and hit the nearby beach bars and trial some of the Maldives’ elusive nightlife. Check out Bikini Beach or Maafushivaru Island beach, both minutes from Lily Beach Resort by boat, to dance the night away under the stars.

Day 4: Rangali Island, Underwater Restaurant and Outdoor Cinema

Underwater restaurant Rangali Island

Twice voted the Best Hotel in the World , the 151 room Conrad Maldives on Rangali Island is definitely worth visiting. There are endless water and land adventures to be had on Rangali Island and the Conrad makes excellent use of the island’s unique landscape.

Located in the Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, Rangali is only 10-minutes by speed boat from Lily Beach Resort and about an hour from Male. The island’s lush tropical sandbanks extend with branches of luxury water bungalows, but the Conrad’s underwater suites and Ithaa Restaurant are the resort’s highlights.

Start your adventure to Rangali with a sunrise deep sea fishing trip or glass-bottom boat tour. Continue your day on the ocean with a private jetski rental or offshore snorkeling. The marine life is colorful and diverse in Rangali’s pristine waters. Yet, for unmatched underwater vistas, treat yourself to lunch at Ithaa, the first and only 5-star undersea restaurant.

Set within a glass tunnel five meters below the ocean’s surface, enjoy panoramic coral garden views and an exquisite fusion menu. You’ll be more likely to grab a reservation if you avoid peak evening hours, while daylight provides the best underwater visibility. Finish your day cooling off by the infinity pool and catch a flick in the open-air cinema, the Picture of Conrad , to the backdrop of the Maldivian sunset and a sky full of stars. For a real end-of-trip treat, book a night in one of the Conrad’s floating bungalows for a fraction of the price of the underwater suites and enjoy all these amenities free of charge.

Day 5: Veligandu Island Shopping

Maldives 5 Day Itinerary

After four days of remote island luxury, it’s time to draw your Maldivian adventure to a close. But not before another taste of bustling island life and picking up some souvenirs on Veligandu Island.

Veligandu is only a slight detour west on your way back up to Male and an hour by speedboat from Rangali Island. Veligandu is a posh island escape with luxury resorts and beach activities, but it is also home to several small shopping centers and market areas. Find bright shell jewelry, ocean-pearl accessories, and local trinkets to commemorate your trip.

The elusive Veligandu Island Resort at the northern end of the lagoon atoll has an especially lavish Gift Shop & Tailor’s Atelier . Browse high-end designer clothing, get a tailor-made Maldivian garment or treat yourself to some handmade nick-nacks. Stop for lunch at the resort’s four-star seafront Madivaru Restaurant , and bury your feet into the Maldivian sand for the last time from a beachside table.

For your last adventure, take to your skies as you journey back to Male on a 20-minute seaplane ride. Male is easily reachable by public ferry , but a seaplane voyage is a must-do for your Maldivian itinerary. Revel in the stunning birds-eye views of Veligandu’s tropical swaying palms and clear shallow waters, and enjoy the overhead vistas of the northwest Male atolls before you come into land.

Depending on your flight schedule, you can spend the final hours or last evening of your trip checking out some of Male’s other attractions. Drop by The Fish Market and the National Museum of the Maldives , or explore the vibrant café scene and any of the religious sites you might have missed on your first visit. Then, it’s time to head to Velana International airport where you’ll likely depart, marking the end of your Maldives five-day itinerary.

Which month is best to visit the Maldives?

Book your trip to the Maldives between November and April for the best weather. This is the high season where the days will be predominantly sunny with averages highs of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and plenty of blue skies. The monsoon season falls between May and October and peaks in June. Still, the weather varies by region, with the highest rainfall in the northern atolls from May to November but from November to March in the south. For seasonal discounts and fewer crowds, visit in the low season and stick to the southern atolls.

How expensive is a trip to the Maldives?

The Maldives is an exclusive luxury getaway , and even shoestring travelers should budget at least $50 per day to spend in the Maldives, not inclusive of accommodation. Hotels offer great package deals with island-hopping excursions and Male transfers included. Still, you will struggle to find a double occupancy room for less than $200 a night, and five-star resorts can charge more than $1,000 nightly.

What is there to do in the Maldives with the family?

There are tons of family-friendly resorts in the Maldives with quadruple-occupancy rooms, private water playgrounds, kids clubs, and creative activities. Children can join in on snorkeling excursions or be entertained by hotel staff with handicraft classes, water sports lessons, and evening performances. Most resorts will also have lots of facilities for the whole family to enjoy together, like outdoor cinemas, beach bonfires, and aquatic shows.

Can you drink alcohol?

Although the Maldives is a predominantly Islamic country, you can buy and drink alcohol legally if you’re over the age of 18, and not a practicing Muslim. Alcohol is effectively banned from the local population and you can’t consume it in public places. Still, the resorts cater to a western demographic and nearly all are licensed to serve liquor but with a steep importation markup.

Maldives is paradise at its finest. pristine atolls edged by white sand beaches and luxurious resorts. But all that luxury can be a challenge to experience. From the best beaches to the top resorts, we have everything you need to plan a trip to Maldives.

Thoughts of the Maldives often brings to mind gorgeous white sand, over-water bungalows, and sipping tropical cocktails in a hammock. And almost all of those things would be right. The Maldives is a beautiful string of atolls (extinct volcanic islands) in the Indian Ocean, and they offer one of the most beautiful island experiences in the world. But if you’re trying to plan a trip to the Maldives, it’s important to know what makes Maldives unique from almost every country in the world. This post may contain compensated links. What You Need To Know About Maldives

A Maldives vacation is among the most popular romantic getaways around the world. Think perfect atolls wrapped in a ring around the crest of an extinct underwater supervolcano. This unique landscape has given the Maldives some of the most beautiful, clear blue water in the world. And for those who love to spend time on the beach , the inward sides of the islands have incredibly calm water. And these waters make for some of the best beaches in the world.

But all that island perfection comes at a price. The Maldives is not often considered a budget destination. While flights to the Maldives don’t seem too out of touch with the norm, many of the expenses in the Maldives begin once you land. Because of the size and structure of the Maldives, most of the islands are small and only have enough room for one or two resorts. However, due to increased competition, there are ways to experience the Maldives on a budget if you try.

Because of this layout, it’s important to know the best resorts for your Maldives holiday . Places that will limit the additional costs that could haunt you when you receive the bill. One of the big sticker shocks is often the transit from the airport to the island that you are staying on. The prices for these Maldives island transfers can often make the flight costs seem small.

When You Should Plan a Trip to Maldives

The Maldives experiences two seasons . The dry season in the Maldives runs from November to April. The wet season is from May to October. High Season is often considered the best time to visit the Maldives. The Maldives high season is between December and March, but anytime season is fantastic for Maldives travel.

Temperatures in the Maldives remain relatively consistent year-round between 23°-31° C (73.4°-97.8° F). Booking your Maldives vacation during the wet season offers the best travel deals. While booking a Maldives holiday during the high season is the most expensive.

How Long Do You Need for Maldives Holidays?

The Maldives is a true paradise. However, getting between islands in the Maldives can be difficult and expensive. Because of this, most visitors to the Maldives stay only on the island on which they are staying.

Depending on your travel style, anywhere from three days to a week or two is often considered the ideal length of a Maldives holiday. It’s best to look at the activities that you want to partake in and schedule accordingly. If hanging on a beautiful beach for days is your thing, it’s perfect. But if you get itchy feet, aim for a shorter stay.

Flights to the Maldives arrive in the capital, Male. You can greatly reduce the cost of a trip to the Maldives by arriving directly from a nearby country in Asia such as Sri Lanka. But the journey for most visitors to the Maldives starts upon their arrival in Male.

Most resorts are scattered among the Maldivian islands. The availability of transport to the individual islands depends upon the destination. The most common forms of inter-island transport in the Maldives are domestic flight, seaplane, or speedboat. Most resorts only have a single option for their destinations. However, each resort should be able to aid in booking your Maldives transport. The cost of inter-island transport in the Maldives is often over and above the price of the accommodation.

Top Activities in Maldives

Diving / snorkeling.

The Maldives is a popular destination for snorkeling and SCUBA diving. Some of the destinations for snorkeling in the Maldives offer incredible house reefs. It is also possible to snorkel with Whale Sharks at South Ari Atoll and SCUBA dive among massive Manta-Ray, an unforgettable experience that we had in while on the Big Island of Hawaii. You can read more about what to do in the Maldives here .

Learn About Local Maldivian Life

A visit to Male offers a glimpse into the everyday life of local Maldivians. From the city core to the coastal beaches, discover life in one of the most densely packed regions on the planet.

Take a Sunset cruise in the Maldives

Sunsets are something that never gets old. And one of the best ways to experience the sunset is on a sunset cruise like the one we took in Boracay, Philippines .

Boating to see dolphins

The best way to see dolphins and other marine life is in the wild. And the Maldives offers amazing opportunities to experience these playful mammals doing what they do best in some of the most beautiful water in the world. The dolphin viewing in the Maldives even gives our Costa Rica experience a run for its money.

Island Hopping by Group or Private tours (boat or flight)

While the Maldives might be a bit difficult (and expensive) to get around, there are still island hopping tours available for those who want to check out the various islands and resorts throughout the country. These can usually be booked directly through the hotel or resort.

With nothing but ocean and islands as far as the eye can see, the Maldives offers some of the most amazing fishing for anglers who are visiting the country.

Luxurious Spa Treatments

With a huge emphasis on luxury resorts, the Maldives is one of the best places in the world to get pampered. Many of the private island resorts have luxurious spas that will leave you begging for more.

Bio luminescent bay in Maldives

Best Beaches in Maldives

One of the main reasons people vacation in the Maldives is that it has some of the best beaches in the world. Many of the beaches in the Maldives have white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water. But when planning your ultimate destination here are a few of the best Maldives beaches to consider.

Bikini Beach Rasdhoo Island

The Maldives is a stringently Muslim country, and as such, most public areas have a modest dress code in effect for both men and women. The aptly named “Maldives Bikini Beach” is one of the few exceptions. This is where tourists can wear their favorite skimpy swimsuits.

Fulhadhoo Beach Baa Atoll

Baa Atoll is one of the most beautiful atolls in the Maldives. And Fulhadhoo beach is one of it’s most memorable stretches of sand. But what really pushes it to the forefront is its size. Fulhadhoo Beach is huge, and that means that it’s very easy to find a large patch of sand far from the crowds.

Reethi, Dusti, Thani, Mirihi and Cocao Island Bioluminescent Beaches in Maldives

There are a number of beaches in the Maldives that are home to bioluminescent life. At nighttime, when the waters are disturbed by waves or wading feet, these tiny creatures release a beautiful blue glow that makes the experience seem magical. The only beach that remains bioluminescent during the dry season is the Cocoa Island beaches.

Cocoa Island Beaches

Not only is Cocoa Island one of the best islands in the Maldives for its bioluminescent beaches, but it is also one of the best islands for enjoying marine life.

Best Island in Maldives

There are nearly 1,200 islands in the Maldives. Because of this, what you might consider the best island in the Maldives will depend mostly on what you want to get out of your Maldives holiday.

Paradise guys! I'd have to go during wet season. Even though the place stays humid, I am sure, the simple rain cool down plus lower rates makes it a no brainer. But either way I gotta get there on the Blogging From Paradise world tour. Too much of a perfect match ;)

7 Important Tips You Must Know when Planning Maldives Trip

maldives trip plan quora

Vacation in the Maldives is certainly every couple’s romantic dream, sun kiss beaches, luxurious hotels, crystal clear turquoise sea, colourful fishes & reefs.

However many people even us made mistakes unknowingly during travel planning thus causing over budget spending, leaving a scar in the whole experiences.

But you are not to blame, as the Maldives is unique compared to other countries, therefore those mistakes are totally out of your expectations. This article, we will highlight some for you.

1. Avoid staying too many days in the Maldives.

Unless you are into specific activities that require time such as diving & deep-sea fishing, Maldives is perfect for a short stay instead of a long one. Anything more than 1 week will be too much for our opinion.

4 to 5 days is usually sufficient if staying in one hotel and perhaps 7 days if 2 hotels. Opt for quality vacation rather than quantity when in the Maldives.

Note: DO NOT stay in few hotels for a short trip, it is not as easy as hailing a taxi to get to another hotel. A transfer is very tedious & expensive in the Maldives.

2. Splurge in a luxury vacation

maldives2

Mentioning the Maldives, people associate with a luxurious & romantic getaway. Though you can travel Maldives budget which we did for RM1950 per pax, it seems we missed out the most important component of Maldives akin to not visiting Eiffel Tower when in Paris.

So asking everyone in our group about their feedback, the answer was quite similar “We will be back for a luxurious stay, not a budget one”

3. Airport Transfer might be MORE Expensive than your flight ticket to the Maldives

This is a very important criteria people often overlook when planning their Maldives holiday. Most visitors will arrive at Male the capital of Maldives.

Airport transfer is Very Expensive in the Maldives. Therefore you MUST CHECK how much is the transfer cost to your hotel as most hotel rates do not include transfer which can be very expensive.

There are 2 common ways to reach your hotel: speedboat or seaplane.

Hotels located nearer to Male you are able to arrange speed boat transfer which cost from USD5o to USD200 per pax return. Some hotels even make it compulsory to take their transfer so do a double-check.

Hotels which are located far from Male, Sea Plane transfer is required. Sea Plane transfer easily cost USD350 to USD450 for a return trip per person.

So not only you have to compare hotel rates, but you will also need to check transfer fees as we have a friend who paid USD70 per night but found out the hotel is only reachable by seaplane thus forking out extra USD350.

Note : If arriving late evening or flying out early morning, you might require to overnight at Male, do check with your hotel.

4. You are most likely to stay on an island with just your hotel

Most hotels are located on their own private island thus it is the only hotel on the island. One reason we recommend a short stay as you get bored easily after 4 or 5 days.

5. Food is expensive & limited choice, your 3 meals are mostly eaten at your hotel.

Since the island has only one hotel which is the one you are staying, all your daily meals will be eaten at the same hotel. When choice is limited, dining can be expensive. Always budget USD50 per meal per pax.

If possible book a full board price which includes meal & drinks during your stay, at least there is less pain than ordering expensive meals.

6. Budget for extra activities.

Maldives

7. Always know the details of your activities, especially how long is the transfer.

Certain activities are located at a specific location, for example, whale shark watching, though your hotel might offer this excursion, do find out how long to reach there. The locals are used to sea transportation but as foreigners, we might not be accustomed to 5 hours boat ride per way especially people who are prone to seasickness.

Hopefully, after reading this article, you are more prepared to enjoy the Maldives better!

Most travellers visit Maldives for Scuba Diving 🙂 Plenty of Manta Rays to be seen.

would you recommend the best afforable resort for kids?

Hi, maybe Holiday Inn

Very nice information but seems you miss the part that resorts are very expensive and especially the if you need to buy some thing there such as drinks

Hi Usman, Club med is an all inclusive resort meaning drinks are included in the price. Thanks

DId you use CludMed?

Thanks for the comprehensive review about Maldives. Since so much information regarding food etc are not provided on travel sites.

Great tips! Thank you!

I went to the Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa. It’s all inclusive and has activities that is suitable for families.

Dear Alliepii, glad to hear that

thank you for sharing <3

Hi, appreciate if you could share with me the speedboat transfer service provider that you had engaged with.

Hi Janelle, usually it is compulsory arrangement by the hotel

Thanks for sharing, Really helpful.

We have visited the Maldives twice, each time at a different all inclusive hotel. Travelled by boat the first time and seaplane the second, time all booked as part of our holiday package. We happily spent 10 and 12 nights respectively, never tiring of the choice of food or daily snorkelling trips. Amazing experience and ready for a third trip soon.

Hi Debra Which islands and hotels did you book with, and how much were they? I am trying to find an all inclusive hotel for 10 or 12 nights. Velvet

Loved your article!

Could you recommend a luxury resort for a couples 4 day trip. I think I would prefer one with nearby activities and good food.

Hi Alisha the most straightforward will be Club Med

Thank you. It is good to be prepared, you have some good tips to consider.I will look into things a lot more closely.

I AM PLANNING COMMING OCTOBER 17TH TO 28TH WE NEED GOOD OFFERS AND AMAZIING LOCATION MALE

Any tips for travelling to the Maldives in May?

The Maldives is an amazing destination for people who love the beach life.

I have been there once, and wish to be back.

Your guide was impressive and photos are mind-blowing.

Thanks. We took a 25 min speed boat from Male and enjoyed the wonderful island. We felt like inside aquarium and took amazing pictures.

You need to check and do your proper research from multiple sources before planning trip to anywhere in the world. From what I can say on Maldives is that it is totally safe nation from tourism perspective and you can even take your family without any hesitation. Visit us @ https://www.rent-boat-dubrovnik.com/private-boat-tours/

do you recommend staying at 2 different hotelsl for the experience or staying at 1 the whole time. We are thinking about 6-7 nights.

Hi Young, yes provided if you are able to stay min 3 nights in each hotel. Lesser than that not recommended

Hi , please suggest some budget but nice hotel considering airport transfer cost, also please suggest islands and places which is a must visit for 1st time honeymoon travel.

I find it really insane to advice not to stay in Maldives longer than 1 week! Yes if you stay in a resort you ll get bored for sure but there are so many things to do and see in Maldives, it’s not just resorts! Also if you don t like the ocean, Maldives might not be the right place for your upcoming holidays 😉

How to Enjoy a Five-Star Luxury Maldives Vacation on a Budget

Adaaran Club Rannalhi is one of the island resorts you can visit on a day trip

What was once a pipedream is now a reality: Budget-conscious tourists can travel to and experience all-inclusive five-star luxury in the Maldives on a budget. Here’s how you can visit photogenic islands and some of the best Maldives resorts without spending thousands of dollars.

Formerly the world’s most exclusive destination.

It’s no secret the Maldives are a notoriously expensive destination. The Indian Ocean archipelago is famed for coral reefs, intense beauty, snorkelling, Asia’s top diving sites and luxurious resort islands. With the average night costing several hundred dollars, the Maldives were out of reach for budget travellers. But not anymore. Today, the islands burst with mid-range tourists and the occasional backpacker visiting the Maldives on a budget.

Water bungalows on the resort island can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars per night

How Much Does it Cost to Visit the Maldives?

After arriving at Velena International Airport in Male, either take the local ferry via Male or the speedboat. The former costs approximately $3 but operates on a sparse timetable. Private speedboats have regular departures charging $25 per person. A typical guesthouse on local islands like Maafushi have nightly prices between $50 and $70. Day trips to resort islands range from $70 to $150 per person. Activities, such as night fishing, snorkelling and half-day trips are anywhere from $25 to $60. Food is surprisingly affordable, with meals costing just a few dollars for a single meal and up to $15 for buffet-style barbeques.

Luxury on a Budget

Tourists travelling to the Maldives on a budget can experience five-star luxury without spending hundreds of dollars per night. While staying at the local islands, you can get a day pass to the resorts. The pass, about $100 per person on average, includes a return speedboat transfer, entrance fees and full access to the resort’s facilities. Many offer a lunch buffet and unlimited drinks, including free-flowing cocktails, wine and beer.

Take a day trip to one of the resort islands such as Adaaran Club Rannalhi

The Smart Way to Visit the Maldives

Couples who stay at one of Maafushi’s guesthouses and take a day trip to the resort islands will spend about $260 and still have access to the facilities and amenities, rather than paying $800 or more per night. Tourists have the advantage of visiting more than one resort too. So yes, travelling to the Maldives on a budget is possible. A dream vacation in one of the world’s most beautiful spots won’t break the bank.

For approximately $100 each, a trip to one of the resort islands is worth it

Maldives Tourism: Local Dishes to Try

A traditional snack of the Maldives, eaten throughout the day, Masroshi consists of a stuffed and fried dough, cooked till it becomes golden brown.

Since the Maldives is all about waters, fish and that too 'tuna', consists a major part of its cuisines. Find and relish this dish in the majority of big and small restaurants in Male.

Bis Keemiya

Resembling a bit like our Indian samosa, Bis Keemiya is a popular dish of the Maldives and is a must to have whenever you book your Maldives package.

Again, a dish made with tuna/substituted with an egg put together as a pastry, Bis Keemiya is a delectable dish to be savoured on your next trip to the Maldives.

A clear fish broth, known to be one of the most basic and traditional dishes of local Maldivian culture, is savoured by locals as well as tourists. The broth of Garudhiya is based on the species of tuna, a dish enjoyed by the locals almost every day.

One of the two national drinks of the Maldives, the other being Sai (tea), Raa is a typical traditional Maldivian drink.

It is a toddy, tapped from the upper part of the trunk of the palm where coconut grows. Many a time, it is left for fermentation too.

Make sure to try a 'Raa', which sometimes is served as a complimentary drink at resorts and hotels with Maldives tour packages.

Island Hopping In Maldives: A Tryst With The Turquoise Waters In 2022

Weather In Maldives In April

We traveled to Maldives in the month of April and the weather was warm and sunny during day time and evenings were pleasant. At night we experienced heavy rainfall. The average temperature in Maldives in April ranges between 29°C to 31°C. The weather was perfect for lazing around on the beaches and we totally enjoyed our vacation.

Best Experiences On Our Budget Trip To Maldives From India

The entire trip was full of amazing experiences. If we have to choose a few of the best experiences, it would be the 1-night stay at the water villa, the scuba diving experience in the midst of the most beautiful marine life, and not to forget, the jaw-dropping shark expedition. Here are all the details about the experiences which made our vacation special!

1. Adaaran Club Rannalhi: An Exotic Stay!

Addaran club resort

The best part of our vacation was our stay at the stunning Adaaran Club. Our first day started with a smooth transfer from the airport to the resort and the ride through the turquoise blue water was quite fascinating. As soon as we reached the resort we were greeted with a nice cool face towel and a welcome drink of ice tea. The greeting itself was very warm and Adaaran had started winning our hearts already. Adaaran Club gave us a beach facing room which made our stay extra special. As soon as we reached there we wasted no time to get into the beautiful blue waters around, and time went by like never before. In the evening a special cocktail party by the beach was arranged by the Resort team. From the fun activities to great hospitality, Adaaran Club Rannalhi really impressed us and it is one of the best places to stay in Maldives!

Artificial Beach Maldives: All You Need To Know Before You Go

2. Snorkeling, Scuba Diving & Some Beach Clicks!

had breakfast in the resort

There are ample of things to do in Maldives and among them, the activities which we enjoyed the most were snorkeling and scuba diving. Our thrilling snorkeling sessions started on the second day of our vacation. As soon as we woke up in the morning, the sun was out there in its full glory and within no time we were in the waters, with our snorkeling gear. We spent hours in the water, taking some awesome snaps with our tripod. Post lunch hours, we went to every part of the island taking more and more memorable photos all the way through.

clicked some best shots at the beach

On the third day of our vacation, we went for the free trial scuba diving at The Dive Point. Our diving instructor ensured that my wife, who is usually scared of water, also took the trial. We both were mighty impressed and I enrolled for the one-hour diving session on the next day. Our mornings were all about a sumptuous breakfast, followed by a fun session of snorkeling which had become a morning ritual by then and after that, we also took some scuba diving sessions. After our snorkeling and scuba diving sessions, we took some instaworthy photos and videos of the marine life around with my action camera. Couples who are thinking about what to do in Maldives on honeymoon should definitely try scuba diving and snorkeling if they love adventure and water! Spending time with your loved one while challenging the adventure buff in you, is the perfect idea of a romantic vacation and we truly enjoyed every second of it!

3. Water Villas: A Night Stay In Heaven!

some awesome snaps

If anyone would ask us, what was the highlight of your vacation? We would say that thē second last day of our vacation was the one which made us fall in love with Maldivian hospitality. On the fourth day of our vacation, we checked in to the jaw-dropping water villa which had a glass floor and the perfect sundecks to enjoy the beautiful sunset. We were welcomed with champagne which added to the level of hospitality which we had been experiencing for the last 3 days. The water villa was an out of the world experience and was surely the highlight of our vacation. The whole experience of living in a water villa made our vacation blissful and magical!

Restaurants In Maldives

In Maldives, each island is a resort and there aren’t multiple restaurant options available. We had opted for a full board meal, which means breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet. Our resort has a huge restaurant and we had delicious food there 12 times during the 5 days stay. The food was truly electable each time and there was a lot of variety to choose from which pleased the foodie in me. There was a huge spread of non-vegetarian food including fresh seafood and there were multiple vegetarian dishes as well, with few live counters. Our resort also had two Lounge bars with clear endless views of the pristine blue waters. We really enjoyed our meals at the restaurant as they were freshly prepared and scrumptious in taste.

Shopping In Maldives

took memorable photos

We were so engrossed in adventurous activities that we didn’t shop a lot. We bought souvenirs to carry back home, as a sweet memory of the amazing vacation that we had at this paradise island resort. We bought all the souvenirs from a shop within the island itself. The prices were a bit on the higher side, but not extravagant.

Maldives Tips For Travelers

All travelers should do their own research online and through their networks and opt for what suits them. Do buy a local sim as soon as you reach the Maldives. The international roamings of Vodafone and Airtel do not work too well there on the island and are much costlier. We would suggest all future travelers buy a sim from the Airport!

Do’s And Don’ts In Maldives

perfect romantic vacation

Here is a list of Do’s and Don’ts that you should keep in mind on your budget trip to Maldives from India!

  • Carry light clothes, as the weather is tropical, and remains mostly unchanged throughout the day.
  • Carry sunscreen lotions and sunglasses
  • Carry a big hat, if sunlight on the face bothers you
  • We carried our own snorkeling gear, an action camera that is waterproof one for underwater shooting, and tripod, for all those amazing couple shots.
  • It is much cheaper on the pocket. The stuff is available here on rent but at a high cost. People also carry drone cameras. Worth a try, if you want those incredible aerial shots.
  • US Dollar currency notes are accepted everywhere, apart from international cards. You may still wish to keep some local currency for paying tips.
  • Carry enough swimwear. There is no better place on earth to flaunt them.

Don’ts

  • Do not carry extra footwear. A pair of flip-flops or sandals are more than enough.
  • Don’t book the watersports or other activities in advance. The booking can always be done at the resort.
  • Don’t litter. The staff here work really hard to keep the beaches clean and safe for marine life.
  • Don’t pick corals as it is strictly prohibited.

Our Experience With TravelTriangle

experience of living in a water villa

The experience was extremely good and positive. The agents Sarita from the Marketing team and Rajat from operations were both extremely helpful and stuck to their words. The payments through installments helped us manage our finances. Sarita provided us various options within our budget, which ensured we could choose the one which best suited us. Rajat was spot on with the updates on things like rescheduling of flight timings and ensuring we got a ground floor room as per our request. Kudos to the whole team.

Budget Maldives Trip

Here are some of the tips to plan a maldives budget trip:, quick navigation.

Lagoon Bar at Olhuveli

Cheapest Month to go to Maldives

Cheapest Month to go to Maldives

The cheapest month to go to Maldives is during the low season. The months from May through to October are the most reasonable because of the monsoon season. This season means that you have the opportunity to have an entire beach all to yourself! You will find hotels and flights to be cheaper. And though you may experience periods of storms and heavy rain, they quickly disappear in no time. So if you do not mind the heavy spontaneous rains and are more than willing to explore Maldives on a Budget, then make bookings during May to October. When it is about vacationing in Maldives, the most significant factors are always price, crowds, and sunshine. And thus keeping everything in mind, you must skip the high season that starts from December to March. That is because during this time the guesthouses charge exorbitant rates. But if you make bookings within six weeks of your travel, then as the time of departure approaches, many resorts inclusive of the top-end luxury ones drop their rates to maximize the levels of occupancy. Also, you would not want to miss out on visiting the other Maldivian islands that are pretty quiet during August to September. Planning a trip to Maldives, check out: Best Maldives Trip Packages

Finding Budget Accommodation

Finding Budget Accommodation

When you desire to explore the Maldives on a Budget, you must keep in mind that there won’t be any super cheap accommodation options. There aren’t dorm rooms or crappy five-dollar beach bungalows but there are budget guesthouses galore. The Maldives is an epitome of luxury and is dotted with the chain of international hotels, one after the other all over its mini atolls. Most of these are extremely promising, extravagant and the best accommodations that offer personalized services. But for those that do wish to live in low-cost lodgings, there are many independent guesthouses for them as five years ago the government of Maldives relaxed its rules of accommodation. You will be enthralled to know that for just thirty to sixty dollars, you can stay in a spacious, modern, and clean room that is air-conditioned, and has a hot shower. Most of these budget accommodations are cleaned twice daily, offer you free breakfasts, snorkeling gear, and water. The easiest method to find economical accommodation is through Thrillophilia. Here you can simply search for a list of the hotels, alongside your dates, and sort the prices in ascending order. Start searching from over three hundred guest houses that can charge you anything between fifty to 100 dollars (INR 3751- INR 7354), per night.  Must Read:  Top Activities to do on Maldives Trip

Finding Budget Transport

Finding Budget Transport

Transport is cheap in the Maldives and when you are all set to explore the Maldives on a Budget, you will find that there are local ferries that offer bang for the bucks. They may have an infrequent schedule but all you have to shell out is two to four dollars for a journey of three hours. If you had to travel to Male from the Male Airport then you may have to pay as less 0.60 dollars, while three dollars to reach Maafushi from Male. It is indeed commendable how you only have to shell out four dollars to reach Fulidhoo from Maafushi and pay only two dollars to reach Guraidhoo from Maafushi. Remember that the local ferries do not stop at any of the resort islands, so if you are headed for a resort visit, you have to board a speedboat. These speedboats can charge anywhere between forty dollars to two hundred dollars for nearby locations and are hence too expensive. Also when on a budget, you must avoid the seaplanes at all costs. They can charge you anything around 500 dollars for a journey that spans twenty minutes.  Everything you need to know about Maldives:-   Places To See in Maldives

Finding Budget Food

Finding Budget Food

For those that have a Budget Maldives Trip and have chosen to go the route of the local island, you will be delighted with the plethora of classic Maldivian dishes that guesthouses have to offer. You can expect plenty of fish in any form, and rice and curry aplenty for less than ten pounds (INR 1000). If you go to Maafushi, which is a comparatively larger island, you would be amazed as much because many local restaurants offer a lot of varieties of Maldivian delicacies and barbecued gigantic fish. You must never miss out on the incredible breakfasts that Maldives offers because the bowl of chili, coconut, finely chopped onion and tuna that is served with freshly baked roshi is divine. Expect to shell out anything between five to ten dollars for a fish-based meal that comprises tuna thoroughly depending on the accommodation you choose. Say if you choose a resort-style vacation then bargain price for drinks and dinner each night could amount to anywhere close to 100 pounds (INR 9508). And, finding cheaper alternatives once when you have checked into a one-resort island is not easy at all. So, think wisely and choose well. Check Out: 55 Maldives Resorts

Finding Cheap Excursions

Finding Cheap Excursions

When on a budget Maldives trip the cheapest method to opt for an excursion is to make bookings for it through a guesthouse that you selected through Thrillophilia. Of course, you can shop around to bag better deals by wandering into over four guesthouses and enquire about the rates before arriving on a conclusion. Much to your relief, most guesthouses will include extras like diving and snorkeling. You can also arrange the excursions through any of the dive shops present on the island and pay anything between fifty to a hundred dollars for dives. Mind you, that the cheapest diving option in the Indian Ocean islands is to opt for a live-aboard trip. If you are at Guraidhoo you may have to pay fifty dollars per person for 12 hours of snorkeling. The price can feel like it's on the higher side but after you witness a swarm of tropical fishes, and lovable sea turtles swimming by your side, you will have no regrets.  Also Checkout:  Best Maldives Honeymoon Trip Packages

Vaadhoo Island is a beautiful island in the Maldives which offers beautiful beaches, iconic landscapes and mesmerising beauty. When the sun goes down at Vaadhoo Island, the sea waves lapping the shore light up like a shimmering field of blue dots giving the sea the appearance of the starlit night sky. This incredible phenomenon occurs during the late summer months due to the growth of phytoplankton, or aquatic creatures that glow in the dark. You can stir up the water, and if the plankton is present, it will splash around the gorgeous blue light, creating a mesmerizing sight. However, your chances of seeing this increase when you cruise offshore. The waves break against the boat and make the tiny organisms radiate light. The clean water around Vaadhoo offers high visibility. And the rich marine life and colourful corals around the island make it a hotspot for adventurous water sports. Indulge in snorkelling and diving while swimming and kayaking are also popular activities here. Several cosy accommodations are available on the island, catering to every budget. You can also choose to stay at a luxury resort nearby and explore Vaadhoo on a day trip. Introduction

Welcome to the breathtaking paradise of the Maldives! With its pristine white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vibrant marine life, the Maldives is a dream destination for many travelers. Situated in the Indian Ocean, this tropical archipelago is composed of 26 coral atolls, each boasting its own unique beauty and charm.

Whether you’re a honeymooner seeking a romantic getaway or an adventure enthusiast looking to explore the vibrant underwater world, the Maldives has something to offer everyone. But before you start envisioning yourself lounging on the beach or diving into the vibrant coral reefs, it’s essential to understand the costs associated with a vacation in the Maldives.

In this article, we will break down the various expenses you can expect to incur during your trip to the Maldives. From flights and accommodation to food and activities, we’ll provide you with an overview of the typical costs involved, helping you plan your dream vacation while keeping your budget in check.

While the cost of a vacation in the Maldives can vary depending on factors such as the season, your chosen resort, and your desired level of luxury, this guide will provide you with a general idea of what to expect.

So let’s dive in and explore the expenses associated with a magical holiday in the Maldives!

Flight Expenses

Getting to the Maldives is a thrilling experience in itself. As an archipelago located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the most convenient way to reach the Maldives is by air. The main international airport, Malé International Airport (MLE), serves as the gateway to this tropical paradise.

When it comes to flight expenses, they can vary significantly depending on your departure location, the time of year, and how far in advance you book. To secure the best deals, it’s recommended to book your flights well in advance and keep an eye out for any special promotions or discounts.

International flights to the Maldives are typically cheaper when departing from major cities in Asia, such as Bangkok, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur. If you are traveling from Europe or North America, you may need to transfer in one of these Asian cities or other major international hubs. The cost of the ticket will also depend on factors like the airline you choose, the class of service, and whether you opt for a non-stop or connecting flight.

On average, round-trip flights to the Maldives can range from around $600 to $1500 per person for economy class, depending on the factors mentioned above. Business class and first-class tickets can often cost significantly more.

It’s worth noting that some all-inclusive resorts in the Maldives may offer packages that include round-trip transfers from Malé International Airport to their property. This can be a convenient and cost-effective option, as it eliminates the need to arrange separate transfers.

Additionally, keep in mind that there may be additional costs for luggage fees, seat selection, and other add-ons depending on the airline. It’s essential to read the terms and conditions of your ticket and factor in any additional expenses when budgeting for your flight.

Overall, while flight expenses to the Maldives can be a significant portion of your total vacation cost, with careful planning and research, you can find reasonably priced options that fit your budget.

Accommodation Costs

When it comes to accommodation in the Maldives, you’ll find a wide range of options ranging from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious overwater villas. The cost of accommodation will largely depend on the type of resort or property you choose, its location, and the level of luxury and amenities it offers.

One of the main attractions of the Maldives is its iconic overwater bungalows and villas. These stunning accommodations allow you to wake up to breathtaking views of the ocean and have direct access to the vibrant coral reefs. However, they tend to come with a higher price tag.

If you’re on a budget or prefer a more affordable option, there are also guesthouses available on local islands in the Maldives. These provide a chance to experience local culture and hospitality while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Guesthouses often offer comfortable rooms, shared facilities, and easier access to local activities and dining options.

The cost of accommodation in the Maldives can range anywhere from $80 to several thousand dollars per night. Luxury resorts and overwater villas can cost upwards of $1000 per night, while guesthouses and budget-friendly options can start as low as $80 per night.

It’s important to note that many resorts in the Maldives operate on a full-board or all-inclusive basis, meaning that meals and certain activities are included in the room rate. These packages can be a great way to enjoy your vacation without worrying about additional expenses for dining or entertainment.

When considering accommodation costs, keep in mind that peak season in the Maldives tends to be during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During this time, prices may be higher, and availability may be limited. Planning your trip during the shoulder seasons or low season can often offer more affordable rates.

Overall, it’s essential to do your research, compare prices, and consider your preferred level of luxury and location when budgeting for accommodation in the Maldives. Whether you choose an overwater villa or a guesthouse, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience surrounded by the natural beauty of this tropical paradise.

Food and Dining Expenses

One of the highlights of any vacation is indulging in delicious cuisine, and the Maldives offers a diverse culinary experience. From traditional Maldivian dishes to international delights, there are options to satisfy every palate. However, it’s important to understand the potential costs associated with dining in the Maldives.

If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort, meals may be included in your package, saving you from significant dining expenses. These resorts typically offer a variety of dining options, including buffet-style meals and à la carte restaurants, where you can enjoy a range of cuisines.

For those staying at guesthouses or non-inclusive resorts, the cost of dining will depend on your choice of restaurants. In local islands, you’ll find small cafés, local eateries, and guesthouse restaurants that offer affordable meals. These options often serve traditional Maldivian dishes such as fish curry, fried rice, and local delicacies.

If you’re staying in luxury resorts or dining at their restaurants, expect higher prices. Fine dining establishments and specialty restaurants in resorts can offer exquisite experiences but usually come with a higher price tag.

On average, a meal at a mid-range restaurant in the Maldives can cost around $15 to $30 per person. However, keep in mind that dining costs can vary depending on the location and type of restaurant. Some luxury dining experiences can cost upwards of $100 per person.

In addition to dining at restaurants, many resorts offer unique experiences such as private beach dinners or romantic sunset cruises, which can be an additional expense. These experiences add to the overall ambiance and can create unforgettable memories.

If you’re on a budget, consider exploring local cafes and markets in Malé, the capital city of the Maldives. Here, you can sample local street food and purchase fresh produce or snacks at lower prices.

Overall, budgeting for food and dining expenses in the Maldives will depend on your culinary preferences and whether your accommodation includes meals. By being mindful of your choices and exploring different dining options, you can create a delightful culinary experience without breaking the bank.

Transportation Expenses

Getting around the Maldives can be a unique and exciting experience. As an archipelago made up of numerous islands, transportation options vary depending on your location and the activities you plan to undertake.

If you’re staying at a resort, they will typically provide transportation services from the airport to their property. This can be in the form of a speedboat transfer or a seaplane transfer, depending on the distance and location of your chosen resort. These transfers are often arranged by the resort and included in the overall cost of your stay.

If you’re staying at a guesthouse on a local island, you may need to arrange your own transportation from the airport to your accommodation. This can be done through a public ferry or by arranging a private transfer with your guesthouse. Costs for these transfers can vary, but they are typically more affordable compared to resort transfers.

Once you’re settled at your accommodation, getting around the Maldives involves mostly water-based transportation. Many resorts offer complimentary or paid shuttle services between different areas of the resort. You can also explore the stunning marine life by taking a snorkeling trip or renting a kayak or paddleboard, which may incur additional costs.

If you’re staying on a local island, you can get around by walking or using bicycles, as many of these islands are small in size. Some islands also have local transportation options, such as taxis or small motorized vehicles known as “bajajs,” which can take you around the island for a small fee.

It’s important to factor in the cost of transportation if you plan to explore multiple islands or participate in excursions and tours. These can include activities such as island hopping, visiting uninhabited islands, or going on diving or fishing trips. Prices for these excursions can vary depending on the duration and the activities included.

While transportation expenses can add up, it’s essential to consider them as part of the overall experience of exploring the Maldives. Whether you’re cruising through the crystal-clear waters in a speedboat or embarking on a scenic seaplane flight, transportation in the Maldives offers a unique adventure.

Activities and Tours Cost

A vacation in the Maldives offers an abundance of activities and tours to make your stay truly unforgettable. From exploring the underwater wonders to experiencing the local culture, there is something for everyone to enjoy. However, it’s important to consider the cost of these activities when budgeting for your trip.

One of the main attractions of the Maldives is its incredible marine life. Snorkeling and diving are popular activities that allow you to immerse yourself in the vibrant coral reefs and encounter a rich diversity of marine species. Many resorts offer complimentary snorkeling equipment, while diving might incur additional costs for certification or rental gear.

If you’re interested in exploring the local culture, you can visit inhabited islands to experience the traditional way of life in the Maldives. This can include visiting local markets, observing traditional crafts, or participating in cultural activities. Some resorts offer guided excursions to nearby islands, where you can interact with the locals and learn about their customs and traditions.

Water sports enthusiasts will find plenty of options in the Maldives. From jet skiing and parasailing to windsurfing and kiteboarding, there is an array of thrilling activities to choose from. These activities often require specialized equipment and may incur additional fees.

For those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation, many resorts offer spa and wellness facilities. From luxurious massages to holistic treatments, pampering yourself in the serene surroundings of the Maldives can be an indulgent experience. Spa treatments typically have their own cost, and prices will vary depending on the services and duration.

When it comes to tours and excursions, the cost will depend on the specific activity and the duration. For example, a sunset cruise or a dolphin-watching excursion may have a separate fee, while a full-day island-hopping adventure can come at a higher price point. It’s advisable to research and compare prices, as well as read reviews, to ensure you choose reputable tour operators.

Remember to budget for any additional activities or tours you plan to participate in during your stay in the Maldives. It’s always a good idea to prioritize the activities that interest you the most and allocate funds accordingly.

Overall, while activities and tours in the Maldives can have associated costs, they provide unforgettable experiences that contribute to the overall magic of your vacation in this tropical paradise.

Miscellaneous Expenses

Aside from the major expenses like flights, accommodation, food, transportation, and activities, it’s important to consider the miscellaneous expenses that may arise during your vacation in the Maldives. These additional costs can vary depending on your personal preferences and the duration of your stay.

One common miscellaneous expense is the cost of travel insurance. While it may not be mandatory, having travel insurance is highly recommended to protect yourself against any unforeseen circumstances, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage. The cost of travel insurance will depend on the coverage and duration of your trip, so it’s advisable to get quotes from different providers and choose a plan that suits your needs.

If you plan on shopping for souvenirs or local handicrafts, it’s a good idea to allocate a portion of your budget for this. The Maldives offers a range of unique products, including traditional crafts, clothing, and locally made skincare products. Prices can vary, so it’s helpful to compare prices and negotiate if possible.

Another expense to consider is gratuities or tips. While tipping is not obligatory in the Maldives, it is customary to show gratitude for exceptional service. It’s advisable to research the tipping etiquette beforehand to understand the general expectations and customs associated with tipping at your accommodation, restaurants, or during guided tours.

It’s also important to be aware of any additional fees or taxes that may be charged at your accommodation or during activities. Some resorts may have a mandatory service charge or a tourist tax that is added to your bill. Additionally, certain water activities, such as diving or snorkeling, may require permits or licenses, which could have associated costs.

If you require any specific medications or have dietary restrictions, it’s necessary to budget for these as well. Medications may be more expensive in the Maldives, so it’s advisable to bring an ample supply or consult with a healthcare professional prior to your trip. Dietary restrictions may require special meal arrangements, which could incur additional costs.

Lastly, it’s always a good idea to have some extra cash on hand for any unforeseen expenses or emergencies. While major credit cards are widely accepted in most resorts and tourist areas, having some local currency is useful for smaller establishments or markets in local islands.

By considering these miscellaneous expenses and including them in your budgeting, you can ensure a worry-free and enjoyable vacation in the Maldives.

A vacation in the Maldives is a dream come true for many, offering pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a chance to escape into a tropical paradise. While planning your trip, it’s crucial to consider the various expenses involved to ensure a smooth and budget-conscious experience.

The cost of a vacation in the Maldives can vary depending on factors such as flights, accommodation type, dining preferences, transportation, activities, and any miscellaneous expenses. By understanding these costs, you can better plan and allocate your budget to make the most of your time in this idyllic destination.

When it comes to flights, booking in advance, researching promotions, and comparing airlines can help you find more affordable options. Accommodation costs range from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious overwater villas, providing a range of options to suit different budgets and preferences.

Food and dining expenses can be managed by choosing all-inclusive packages or exploring local eateries and markets. Transportation costs include transfers from the airport to your accommodation and exploring different islands through water-based transportation.

Activities and tours add excitement to your trip, and while some may come at an additional cost, there are plenty of options to suit various interests and budgets. Don’t forget to consider miscellaneous expenses such as travel insurance, shopping for souvenirs, gratuities, and any additional fees or taxes.

Planning and budgeting for these expenses will help you make the most of your Maldives vacation without any financial surprises. Keep in mind that prices can vary depending on the season, location, and the level of luxury you desire.

By being prepared and understanding the costs involved, you can create a memorable and enjoyable experience in the Maldives that fits your budget. So pack your bags, immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty, and get ready for a vacation that will leave you with lasting memories.

How to Plan a Budget Trip to Maldives from India

How to Plan a Budget Trip to Maldives from India

The Maldives may be home to some of the most expensive resorts in the world, but it is quite possible to enjoy a vacation there without breaking the bank. If you are wondering how to plan a budget trip to Maldives from India , you’ll find multiple ways to do so.

Even if you manage your flights and stay, you may not know what to do in Maldives on a budget . A comprehensive holiday plan to this archipelago should leave nothing to chance. Follow these tips to make the most of your money on your island vacay.

Book your Flights in Advance

India to Maldives on Budget - Book Your Flights in Advance

Air tickets from India to Maldives are quite reasonable, especially if you book non-stop routes and a few months in advance. One-way fares can be as low as INR 6,000 per person for Bengaluru to Malé – capital city of The Maldives.

The fare from other Indian cities only differs by a few thousand rupees. Instead of waiting for your holiday dates to get closer, book your flights as soon as you have your resort in The Maldives blocked.

Pick Public Islands over Private Ones

India to Maldives on Budget - Pick Public Islands over Private Ones

Maldives luxury villas may lure you with their glamour and grandeur, but if you have a budget that you need to stick to, skip the expensive private island resorts for public islands. There are roughly 1,200 islands in The Maldives, and you’ll be spoilt for choice when looking for a local isle.

Public islands are inhabited by the local Maldivians, and offer a more wholesome vacation experience, with affordable water activities, indigenous food and interactions with the Muslim islanders.

Most public islands are well connected to Malé – the world’s smallest capital and can be reached from the Velana International Airport via public ferries with a couple of stops. Some local islands you can consider are Rasdhoo, Guraidhoo, Gulhi, Maafushi, Ukulhas, Huraa, Himmafushi, Hulhumalé, Thulusdhoo, Fulidhoo, Mathiveri and Dhiffushi.

Many hotels in The Maldives offer deep discounts if you book several months in advance or during the off-peak months of July to September. If you keep an eye out for the online rates of Maldives water villas with pool , you’ll be able to score as much as 50% off if you are lucky.

If you are not booking directly with the property but going through a travel agent, it helps to ask for quotations of Maldives tour packages from India from different providers and compare their rates and services before zeroing in on one.

Choose Resorts with Speedboat Transfers over Seaplane Ones

Choose Resorts with Speedboat Transfers over Seaplane Ones

The Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean in a way that these little islands are scattered on either side of the equator. If you plan to select a resort island that is far away from Maldives International Airport , you’ll be paying a higher price for seaplane transfers.

Alternatively, if your destination island is less than a couple of hours away from the airport island, a speedboat transfer will be offered to you – at a much lower rate as compared to internal flights or seaplanes.

To put things in perspective, a private seaplane ride can cost anywhere between USD 200 to USD 1,000 per person, whereas a ride on a public slow dhoni will just cost USD 5.

Look for Guest Houses instead of Fancy Hotels

or Guest Houses instead of Fancy Hotels

The idea of a Maldives water villa with pool and Jacuzzi may sound appealing. But if you are on a shoestring budget, a guest house on a public island will save you a lot of precious bucks. Apart from huge savings on the accommodation itself, you’ll also find meals and water activities at a much lower rate than at Maldives resorts on water .

The only thing to keep in mind on a local island is that they follow Islamic rules there. Maldives’ history and culture is heavily influenced by Islam, and visitors are required to dress modestly, except on designated ‘bikini beaches’.

Ditch the Peak Season

India to Maldives on Budget - Ditch the Peak Season

The best thing about The Maldives is that it is in season all round the year. The tropical island climate here means that there are only two seasons – dry and wet. Maldives’ weather is usually sunny and mildly humid, with temperatures hovering between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius.

The tourist season in this Asian country is from November to January, when the weather is at its best. The low season coincides with the wettest months of May to August, although March is the hottest month. If you avoid travelling in the peak season, you automatically save, thanks to off-season discounts.

If you wish to make the best of both worlds and travel with great weather along with affordable prices, pick the shoulder season – September to October and February when it rains only for a few minutes and is pleasant otherwise.

In any case, the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere are opposite to those in the Southern Hemisphere. Maldives stretches across both the hemispheres, so you can choose where you want to spend your holiday.

Bring your Own Snorkelling Equipment

Most resorts charge a nominal snorkel rental fee (about USD 10 per person) on a daily basis. If you wish to ensure your snorkel fits you and want the liberty to snorkel at any time of the day without worrying about returning the gear, get your own snorkel.

Buying a snorkel, mask and fins is much cheaper in India than renting it in The Maldives. You will even be able to choose if you want a breathable face-mask-style snorkel or the simple pipe and goggles.

Pre-book your Water Sports & Spa Activities

If you are the happy-go-lucky kind of traveller who wants to wait until you’re on the island to think of what activities to take up, you’ll see yourself paying through the nose for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), diving or snorkelling trips.

It is always prudent to make a list of the experiences you want and book activities in Maldives when finalizing the resort or hotel you’ll be staying at. Most hoteliers throw in complimentary activities, especially when you book a India to Maldives vacation package through a travel agent.

The same goes for spa treatments. Even a short foot massage can cost upwards of USD 100 and full-body massages are generally more than USD 1,000 per person. However, some of the best all-inclusive islands in The Maldives will give you a complimentary couple spa credit or a steep discount on their therapies.

Buy Souvenirs only at Local Islands

Buy Souvenirs only at Local Islands

The silliest thing to spend on private island hotels in The Maldives is souvenirs. You won’t find much variety at the boutique stores on the private islands, and the small options that you have will almost always cost a bomb.

A smarter way to shop for gifts for your friends and family back in India is to go on Maldives island hopping tours and buy handicrafts, fridge magnets, clothing, coconut shell souvenirs and handbags from the local stores on public islands. You’ll find amazing choices at affordable rates, on which you can also bargain.

Sign up for Walking Tours

Maldives Water Bungalows can only keep you engaged for so long. After you have taken pictures, relaxed in your cocoon and explored the tiny private island, you will want to see more of The Maldives.

Maldives walking tours are a fantastic way to get to know the local culture and landscape with a Maldivian guide. Take your pick from the half-day Malé City walking tour, Huraa Island walking tour, 4-hour Villimalé eco walking tour, Guraidhoo walking tour Thoddoo walking tour and more.

The price per adult ranges from USD 45 to USD 250, which includes all taxes, guide fees, local transfers and sometimes meals as well. Walking tours are much cheaper and more interactive than in-villa activities such as floating breakfasts, couple massages or cooking with the chef.

Switch 5-Star Dining with Local Eateries

Switch 5-Star Dining with Local Eateries

Maldives honeymoon packages from India often have attractive all-inclusive dining options with free-flowing alcohol, in-villa dining on the deck and romantic sandbank date nights. However, for explorers who want their vacation to be light on their pocket, public islands offer interesting alternatives.

Even inhabited islands have beachside dining for couples, especially the hotels that are located on the seafront. Many restaurants on the island of Maafushi have candlelight beach dining options, with a special menu and a heart-shape etched on the sand with the table placed at its centre.

Apart from affordable restaurants, beach shacks and local stalls on inhabited islands let you taste freshly cooked delicacies at a fraction of the cost of upscale restaurants on private isles. You will only be spending around USD 10 at a local eatery, compared to upwards of USD 400 on private islands.

For a twist to regular dining, take a look at Maldives local food tours. For about USD 60 per meal, you will not only get to visit a local island and a Maldivian family, but also taste homemade food and learn the secrets of Maldivian cuisine.

Now that you have a fair idea of how to plan a budget trip to Maldives from India , book your holiday to this idyllic beach destination and don’t worry about having to be a rich Bollywood celebrity to be able to afford a Maldivian vacation.
