Mark thomas tour.
Fresh off the back of a sold-out run and the highest of critical acclaim at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, the political godfather of UK comedy, Mark Thomas, is back to what he does best; taking down politicians, mucking about, new ideas and finding hope.
This award-winning comedian (is there any other type?) asks how did we get here? What are we going to do about it? Who’s up for a sing-song? After lockdowns and isolation, this show is about the simple act of being in a room together and toppling international capitalism.
In previous shows Mark has talked about visiting the West Bank and Jenin, lobbying Parliament, walking in the footsteps of the highest NHS officials, playing at The Royal Opera House, making stuff for TV, radio and newspapers and going undercover. This latest outing is more creative fun from one of our oldest surviving alternative comics.

Mark Thomas
He is best known for his campaigning Channel 4 series, in which he employed, Michael Moore-style, televisual stunts to get his message across. But his work also has a serious side: in one episode he got an Indonesian military chief to admit on camera that their government used torture.
Thomas has said his passion for politics was inherited from his father, a builder and lay preacher at Clapham's Nazarene Church, even if he didn’t inherit his Thatcherite beliefs.
He won a scholarship to Christ's Hospital public school, but he would frequently play truant, often to the theatre, before going on to study at Bretton Hall drama college in Wakefield.
There he began performing his own sketches and shows, doing benefit shows for the miners' strike while still a student. After college he worked for his father by day and did stand-up by night until he could turn pro.
In 1992, his Edinburgh show was nominated for the Perrier award – the same year the fizzy water brand was bought by Nestle, one of the corporations Thomas now campaigns against so vociferously.

Jones Jones – Live in Moscow
Mark Dresser April 18, 2016 Albums Release
Three long-time masters of the improvised music world team up here for genuinely touching, meditative sets of improvised music. The trio first performed as a unit in 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the concert was very special; unusual, unique, and leaderless sound-explorations among three musicians whose ability to listen and respond shone forth during the concert.
Performing entirely improvised music, every Jones Jones musical performance draws on all the individual musicians’ past experiences and thus adds up to something unique and very special that could only have happened within this particular trio configuration. The band performed in Europe in June/July 2008 in Amsterdam, St Petersburg and festivals in Lithuania and Latvia. Jones Jones also was featured at The 2008 Festival of New American Music in Sacramento, California. The group then returned for the Moscow Bienniale in 2010 where its show was recorded live. That recording will be released in late April 2016 by the CD label Not Two and is called The Moscow Improvisations . (A first CD entitled We All Feel the Same Way was produced by the Moscow label SoLyd in time for the trio’s appearance during the 2010 Moscow Biennale; currently out of print but available from online retailers.)

Nat Hentoff (Wall Street Journal) describes Vladimir Tarasov as a master of decorative brushwork, “a drummer of rare subtlety and cunning, who takes sensual delight in the very touch of his extensive array of instruments, from finger chimes to cymbals.” From 1971 to 1986, Tarasov was a member of the well-known contemporary jazz trio, GTC/The Ganelin Trio. With the Trio and many other artists and orchestras he has recorded more than 100 records and CDs including numerous solo performances. He has written music for orchestras, film, and theatre: Staatstheater, Stuttgart – 1995, Majestic Theater at The Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York – 1995; Josef Nadj Centre Choreographique National Orleans, Orleans – 1998, 2004; Theatre Vidy-Lausanne, Meierhold Centre, Moskow – 2003, etc. Vladimir Tarasov has performed with such musicians as Andrew Cyrille, the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Anthony Braxton, Lauren Newton, Butch Morris, Thomas Stanko, Gyorgy Szabados, Masahiko Satoh, among others.

He is documented in over one hundred recordings including nearly thirty CDs as a soloist, band-leader or co-leader. For eighteen years he lived and worked in New York City where he recorded and performed with some of the strongest personalities in contemporary music and jazz including nine years with Anthony Braxton. Pete Townshend Now Says There Will Not Be a Who Farewell Tour: ‘I Was Being Sarcastic’

It turns out that when Pete Townshend recently told the New York Times that he was planning on a final Who farewell tour, he was “being sarcastic,” he told the “ Sound Up!” podcast in an interview released today (April 16).
“It feels to me like there’s one thing the Who can do, and that’s a final tour where we play every territory in the world and then crawl off to die,” he told the Times in an interview published last month.
Popular on Variety
When asked about that line in relation to his infamous boast — “I hope I die before I get old” — from the Who’s 1965 song “My Generation,” he continued, “That’s a twist, in a sense. ‘Slit Skirts’ was an honest confession of how I didn’t like what I’d become. When I wrote [‘My Generation’], I was celebrating the fact that I was young — I was 18 and surrounded by old people. Now, everybody seems younger. But in those days, everybody seemed older and they all seemed to be messed up, either miserable or poor or working too hard or complaining about something. The song was about, ‘I’m never gonna be like you if I’m old,’ and I don’t think I am like them. I’m happy and I’m struggling still, and I think I’m operating for the greater good — touch wood!” (Hear the full 50-minute interview here .)
However, even his comment to the Times showed a distaste for touring as the Who. Immediately after his statement to the paper above, he said, “I don’t get much of a buzz from performing with the Who. If I’m really honest, I’ve been touring for the money. My idea of an ‘ordinary lifestyle’ is pretty elevated.” As always, time will tell.
“Sound Up!” is hosted by former MTV VJ Mark Goodman and top music journalist Alan Light (both formerly of SiriusXM’s “Debatable”), is produced by Roger Coletti and distributed by Revolver Podcasts.

Simon Boccanegra review – vast forces bring Verdi’s ‘fiasco’ to vivid life
Bridgewater Hall, Manchester Opera Rara joined with the Hallé under Sir Mark Elder for this semi-staged performance of the original version of Verdi’s opera
T wenty-five years separate the action in the prologue and first act of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra , and very nearly the same stretch of time elapsed between the opera’s first incarnation – whose opening night in 1857 the composer wrote off, a touch unjustly, as a “fiasco” – and its revised second version, premiered in 1881. The latter has more or less kept a foothold in the standard repertory ever since; but it’s the 1857 original, which Opera Rara, those tireless travellers of opera’s byways and branch lines, have polished up in a brand new edition for a studio recording and this concert performance at Bridgewater Hall.
Contours of plot and libretto remain largely intact. The famous Council Chamber scene is the most keenly felt absence – the town square confrontation, which instead concludes Act II, has plenty of personal drama but far less of its replacement’s febrile patriotic charge – and a smaller role for Paolo Albiani means his treacherous machinations lose their Iago-like bite. But the most palpable difference is in the music itself: starker and more declamatory for both orchestra and singers, without the lyrical sweep and splashes of colour that would enliven the 1881 revision.
Colour aplenty was to be had on this occasion, however, from Germán Enrique Alcántara in the title role: his elegant, supple-toned Boccanegra was wholly plausible as corsair, doge, and anxious father. As his long-lost daughter, and at the centre of all the opera’s male attention, Eri Nakamura was a touching, though at times underpowered, Amelia, spinning out some gossamer top notes but not always as expressive in the midst of an ensemble. Tenor Iván Ayón-Rivas was a model of Italian ardency as her lover Gabriele Adorno, while bass Will Thomas was voluminous of voice, if short on nuance, as the conflicted patriarch Fiesco, and baritone Sergio Vitale did his smoothly-sung best to earn a few pantomime boos.
Joined on stage not only by soloists and the Hallé orchestra, but by the Chorus of Opera North and 16 additional singers from the Royal Northern College of Music, Sir Mark Elder marshalled his vast forces with typically sure-footed panache, drawing burnished, coppery tone from the Hallé strings in particular, and vivid, precise performances from both choruses.
It’s fair to say this early Boccanegra won’t be supplanting its successor in the canon any time soon. Nor does it need to: it succeeds on its own merits, as a broadening of horizons, and a reminder that when it comes to Verdi, even a so-called fiasco is generally worth a second look.

Sunday, 17th March, 7.00pm to 7.30pm at The Museum Of Comedy , The Undercroft, St George Church, Bloomsbury Way. WC1A 2SR
Join Mark for one night only in the Museum of Stolen Things, the first ever pop museum of the nicked. The price is a fiver BUT you have to bring along something stolen to show us to get in. So with your help we will collectively create our museum, in a kind of anarchist version of the Antiques Roadshow. You bring anything from a bookies pen to The Scream by Edvard Munch, be as creative or as pedestrian as you like.
We will be running a drop in evaluation service from 3pm at the Museum for anyone who wants to have their stolen items appraised but can’t make the show. The show is a recording of Mark’s new podcast “Brit-ish” in which he explores our institutions, culture and history in a valiant and possibly vain attempt to find out how the bloody hell we got to this state. Mark Thomas has been going a long time, won lots of awards and will be filching Mark Steel’s identity for the night. Terms and Conditions. *Anyone who does not bring along a stolen item will not be admitted and we will keep your fiver. **All items will be returned at the end of the show unless we like them. ***The Museum of Stolen Things is only 3 minutes walk away from the British Museum.

Bloody hell we’ve only gone and done it!
Quick blog from Mark on new show.
Bloody hell we’ve only gone and done it!
Amidst juggling visas, flights, rehearsals and touring the preview show this has been a hectic time and this is the first chance I’ve had to sit down take a deep breath and reflect on the project.
It has taken 4 years to create “Showtime from the Frontline” from the inception of the idea to the arrival of the performers onstage in front of an audience. Every step of the way has been worth it for us because it has been a brilliantly illuminating and challenging journey.
Our team set out to teach a comedy course in a refugee camp in the West Bank town of Jenin. Some of our students had been through the Jenin Freedom Theatre school and others had never performed before.
Our students – like all students – talk about what they know best, their family, their society, the pressures they feel and the forces they come up against. Our job in Jenin was never to tell people what to say but to teach performance techniques to help articulate and present their experiences in front of a live audience.
We are hugely proud of both what was achieved in Jenin and of this show here, in the UK. We delight and celebrate the freedom of expression throughout the show and its challenging of oppression in any form be it social and familial expectations, the Palestinian Authority or the Israeli occupation.
We believe we have created a joyous, uplifting and unique production that places the voices of young Palestinians centre stage.
At the risk of repeating myself I can not properly tell you how proud I am of their work.
We hope you enjoy it. Salut!
Llangollen Fringe date confirmed for 16th July
Full Llangollen festival line-up is now on their website here
Mark doesn’t often make it to this part of the country so it will probably sell out very quickly!
New show for 2017
Predictable
Few predicted the events of the past year.
Mark sets out to find what the future has in store for us by asking the audience what their predictions for the future are, creating a fantastical, hilarious and sometimes accurate vision of the world.
This show is all about gambling on the future.
Based along the lines of his 2011 show ‘Manifesto’ Mark takes suggestions from the audience to create a snapshot of the future.
The early “work in progress” version of the show is already booked in at the usual venues through July 2017 and all are already on the gigs page here .
Spring tour dates and “The Red Shed” script
Just in – new tour dates for spring 2017 including a week at Battersea Arts and dates around the UK including Scotland, Salford, Sheffield, Newcastle, Taunton and many more – the full listing are found on the gig list . Plus we have stocks of the programme/script for Mark’s latest show, “The Red Shed” in Mark’s online store. In the store you will also find Domestic Extremist tea towels and aprons and now you can get a matching T-shirt from our friends at Philosophy Football.
Jess Thom and Backstage in Biscuit Land
Five years ago I meet a remarkable woman called Jess Thom. She got in touch saying she had Tourettes and would she be OK to come along to see my show Walking the Wall at the Tricycle Theatre. Instinctively and to be honest with little thought I said she would be welcome.
How wrong I was.
Jess does have pronounced tics and verbal outbursts, which are often funny, creative and beautifully absurd. However, some people in the audience objected to her ‘outbursts’ and complained to the theatre staff in the interval.
All of us were somewhat taken aback by this and Jess ended up in the lighting box, segregated from the rest of the audience for the second half. It was frankly awful. Here was I doing a show about separation and occupation and Jess was segregated from the rest of the community, shut away in a tech box.
Her response was as brilliant and inventive as her utterances. She wrote a show called Backstage in Biscuit Land, celebrating her condition and how people react to it. The show is imaginative, beautiful and different every time. I can not recommend it enough.
Backstage in Biscuit Land is on at the Battersea Arts Centre
19 – 23 jul, it’s wonderful – don’t miss it.
Find out more about Jess and the show here: http://www.touretteshero.com
My response has been less creative and frankly less useful but I hope is valid nonetheless.
Where possible I try and organise relaxed performances of my shows. The relaxed performances encourage people to come to the show who may have learning difficulties, behavioural issues and syndromes such as Tourettes. There is a short speech at the start of the show to explain that the performance takes a relaxed attitude to noises, interruptions and fidgets, in fact we welcome it. Lighting plans and sound cues are changed to lessen any sudden or shocking change, there is an area set aside for people to leave the auditorium but stay inside the theatre and if they want to return they are welcome to do so.
There are many things we do to try and make the show accessible and welcoming for everyone.
I was delighted that Jess came along to my last show at the Tricycle theatre and the first half became a memorable and surreal double act with her. The show was one of my favourites of that year.
I am also delighted that Trespass returns to the Tricycle with a relaxed performance on the 4th of May.
There is a surtitled performance on the 27th April for those who are hard of hearing.
In other news we have added the ability to pay by credit card in the merchandise store and you now have a choice of whether we use first or second class postage. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to make your life easier on the site.
