FAQs for Filipino Travelers to Japan following the changes in entry guidelines beginning October 11, 2022

Beginning October 11, 2022, Japan has opened up for individual / independent travel, as well as loosening some border control measures for travelers. We are posting here some Q&As specific for Filipino Travelers to Japan. We hope that the information below will help you prepare for your trip to Japan.

Frequently Asked Questions (Last Updated on 11 October 2022)

Can I visit Japan on my own now?

Yes, beginning October 11, 2022, FIT or individual travel will be allowed. Tourists are no longer required to avail of guided / unguided tour packages to visit Japan.

Is the Philippines a visa-free country?

No, the Philippines is not part of the 68 visa-exempt countries / regions . Filipinos are still required to possess a visa when they visit Japan.

Can JNTO help me with my visa application?

No, since JNTO is a separate organization from the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines. The Embassy has full control over the visa process. The visa information we report is from the Embassy's  Visa/Consular website , so please check their website occasionally for updates regarding the visa process. You may course your visa application through any one of the Embassy's accredited agencies .

Can I use my existing multiple entry visa to visit Japan?

Yes, beginning October 11, 2022, the multiple entry visa's suspension has been lifted, so unexpired multiple entry visas can be used to visit Japan. Please check the Embassy's Visa/Consular website for updated information.

My unexpired multiple entry visa is in my old passport. Can I still use it?

Yes, as long as your multiple entry visa is not yet expired, you just need to bring your old passport with you when you visit Japan. Please check the Embassy's Visa/Consular website for updated information.

My multiple entry visa expired before October 11, 2022. Can I apply for a new one?

Yes, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines started accepting visa applications of all types beginning October 4, 2022. You may course your visa application through any one of the Embassy's accredited agencies .

I had a multiple entry visa but I went to Japan recently using a single entry ERFS visa. Can I still use my multiple entry visa?

No, because the multiple entry visa was cancelled when you were issued a single entry ERFS visa. You will have to apply for a new visa. Please check the Embassy's Visa/Consular website for updated information.

I want to join a package tour. Does my visa application still have to go through the ERFS?

No, because beginning October 11, 2022, the Certificate of Registration to the Entrants, Returnees Follow-Up System (ERFS) will no longer be required. The visa application process will be like how it was before the COVID-19 pandemic. You may visit the Embassy's Visa/Consular website for more details.

Can I enter Japan even if I am unvaccinated / partially vaccinated / vaccinated with vaccines that are not recognized by the Japanese Government?

Yes, as long as you take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and must present a negative result before boarding your flight.

Is it still required to take an RT-PCR test before entering Japan?

No, as long as you have a valid vaccination certificate , which can prove that you are fully vaccinated with vaccines that are recognized by the Japanese Government. If the vaccination certificate does not fulfill all of the conditions, then you have to take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and must present a negative result before boarding your flight.

Can I use the vaccination certificates I got from the Local Government Unit (LGU)?

No, because  VaxCertPH and the Bureau of Quarantine - International Certificate of Vaccination (BoQ ICV) are the official vaccination certificates from the Philippines that are recognized by the Japanese Government. Vaccination cards provided by the local government cannot be used.

I am fully vaccinated with booster/s using vaccines that are recognized by the Japanese Government, but my VaxCertPH certificate has some missing doses. Can I still use this?

No, because the vaccination certificate should show a minimum of three doses. Please ask VaxCertPH to fix this for you. In the event that fixing the details in your VaxCertPH document is not possible before your flight, you will instead have to take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and have to present a negative result before boarding your flight.

My first two doses are in one VaxCertPH certificate, while my booster/s are in another VaxCertPH certificate, so I have two VaxCertPH documents. Can I use both?

No, because there should only be one VaxCertPH document to be used as an official vaccination certificate. Please ask VaxCertPH to fix this for you. In the event that fixing the details in your VaxCertPH document is not possible before your flight, you will instead have to take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and have to present a negative result before boarding your flight.

I was vaccinated with Sinovac. Do I still have to take an RT-PCR test?

No, as long as you possess a valid vaccination certificate . Sinovac is one of the vaccines found in the World Health Organization's Emergency Use List, which the Japanese Government started using beginning October 11, 2022.

I was vaccinated with Sputnik V. Do I still have to take an RT-PCR test?

Yes, because Sputnik V is NOT found in the World Health Organization's Emergency Use List, which the Japanese Government started using beginning October 11, 2022. You will have to take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and have to present a negative result before boarding your flight.

Do my children have to take an RT-PCR test before we enter Japan?

  • Children (under 18 years of age) who possess valid vaccination certificates are NOT REQUIRED to obtain a negative certificate of testing for COVID-19 conducted within 72 hours before departure.
  • For children (under 18 years of age) without a valid vaccination certificate: if they are accompanied by a guardian / parent with a valid vaccination certificate and the said guardian / parent will supervise them, the children will be treated as holders of valid vaccination certificates, and submission of the negative certificates is exempted the same as the guardian as an exception.
  • If children (under the age of 18) without vaccination certificates enter Japan by themselves (without being accompanied by a guardian / parent with a valid vaccination certificate), they are not eligible for the above exception. They must take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before their departure to Japan, and they have to present a negative result before boarding their flight.
  • In case the accompanying guardian / parent does not hold a valid vaccination certificate and enters Japan with a negative certificate, preschool-aged children (generally under the age of 6) are not required a negative certificate.

You may learn more in the MHLW's Q&A on the New Border Measures  guide.

Is travel insurance still required when visiting Japan?

Travel insurance is not required, but we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for your trip to Japan. There is no set amount on how much, but the travel insurance should cover for medical expenses related to COVID-19 (among other coverage and services) during your stay in Japan. This may help shoulder medical costs in the event that you contract COVID-19 while in Japan.

Do I need to take an RT-PCR test when I leave Japan for another country after my visit?

Japan's infection control procedures are only applicable upon entry to Japan. Exiting Japan for another country will be subject to the next country's infection control procedures, so please check the entry requirements for the other country before departing from Japan.

For a more detailed look at the general guidelines, we encourage you to visit JNTO's special website designed for travelers who wish to visit Japan during this time. The website contains step-by-step guides on preparing for your trip to Japan.

We hope to see you again in Japan!

Top 5 airlines serving from Manila to Japan

Upgrade their seats. They’ve got 20-year-old business class seats in their 777s. The food choices. On the way to Manila and the way back I thought we’re lousy compared to other carriers. The staff was fantastic and very happy.

Continual rescheduling of flights, inflight entertainment system did not work, staff not pleasant to interact with.

So far pal express is much better than Cebu pacific in terms of customers service and in flight crew. And on time departure and arrival . Especially if you're taking airbus 320 plane . But the small aircraft like bombardier . It usually delayed .

We did booked shorter layovers but flights changed and layovers are too long good thing Philippine Airlines give us a hotel in manila but here Vancouver to Calgary too long layovers and there is enough sets to wait closer to air canada and they will open 4am.we were here 1 am .our flights schedule for air canada 8:10am.we paid expensive flights but not happy of lay over Vancouver to Calgary.

Biz class is way below what other airlines offer. The food was mediocre at best. A WiFi was intermittent and movies were dated. Honestly the best part of the trip was that the Mabuhay lounge in SFO was closed and they gave us pass to Air France lounge. My advise, fill up there before boarding plane.

Not a pleasant experience from the start of booking first flight all the way through to the actually flight. Only saving grace is the food.

No power on an 11 hour flight? What a joke. Crew did not come by enough to get trash or offer water.

Checking in was okay but boarding a little bit slow

There is a problem with the sound while watching movie or listening to the music ( the sound is static & goes on and off). Aside from the sound, the experience was good & stewardesses are nice.

Not leave 12 hours late. This airline is horrible always late does not refund upgrades for cancelled flights inept counter staff.. needs to be shutdown

The seats are very uncomfortable just was not a pleasant experience

my flight was cancelled an hour before departure and i have not received a refund yet.

A child behind me was kicking my seat and the cabin attendant noticed and kindly asked me if I’d like to switch to a different available seat. Really nice.

The flight crew was very nice. Had a bit of a hiccup on my end when I checked in flying from Tokyo to Sapporo but the staff was very helpful. Definitely enjoyed both flights.

There was no social distancing on the plane. Lots of people sneezing, etc so the coronavirus measures they are taking are not adequate. Very uncomfortable flight. Also hard to get customer service support by phone in English.

Nice service. I wish it could provide hot water on the flight.

internet didn't work. No offer of drinks or snacks.

Flight was seamless. Free wifi helped pass the time. Food was okay, just make sure you pre order or pick something up from the airport

Internet connection very poor, means you can not even order items through their own shop.

Paid for business class lay flat seat. Significantly less comfortable than other carriers. No built in entertainment or WiFi. I barely saw flight attendants at all and they wanted to charge me for a bottle of water if i wanted more than what came with the meal (that i also paid extra for). Essentially you’re just paying for a slightly more comfortable seat than the rest of the plane and nothing else

Wifi could have been better. Arrived 55 mins earlier than scheduled :)

Best part are two crying babies throughout the whole 11 hour trip

Clean and comfortable cabin. Friendly on board service. No vegetarian food options and movie options were very limited. Internet was very slow

I didn’t eat the food but there wasn’t an option. Seat was a little too small for me but everything else was great

Terrible, I will never ever ever attempt to fly on Cebu Pacific. I understand that it’s a cheap flight option but they take cheap experience to the next level.

The front desk and early check in was fantastic and the flight did not have any turbulence

better handling of the checked in luggage. they destroyed mine

Should’ve not separated those who checked-in online and those who checked-in at the airport

the process of paying for the excess baggage weight, the check in process and the boarding process are subhuman. this is an airline devoid of customer service

Cebu Pac has a habit of changing boarding gates. They do a lot of remote boarding. So just be attentive to the announcements, especially if it's near your boarding time.

It was a low cost flight, so no high expectations. The experience was average.

Crew was very helpful because I used a wheelchair to get around

Flight was delayed for almost 30 minutea, I had difficulties to catch up the connecting flight. Bit due to tje well organized Singapore airport I was able to make it

The flight was delayed for 3 hours and I missed my transit flight.

The flight was delayed by an hour . Traveling with 75 year old father was difficult and then when he asked for water he was asked to purchase :-) . Overall just an ok experience.

Overall service is good, the only thing I would like airasia to improve is there seating. Their seat handles are broken as well as the back rest

Boarding with air asia is excellent via organized lines by zone except when there is only 1 gate agent and no scanner, only by tearing tickets??? Crazy

The flight was supposed to depart at 9:25. It departed at 9:00. Im glad we were early and did not miss it.

They wouldn't even allow us to bring water from the fountain on board the aircraft.

Premium seats should have legroom this one didn't have it. I had 2 free checked bag but I got charged for while it shows on my reservation

Terrible airline! This airline just ruined our family vacation due to a 12 hours delay as a result of their operational issues.

Too many flight delays. Airport terminal serving Boracay needs upgrades.

Over 6 hours delayed.. using philippine air fleet planes are beat up dirty and uncomfortable. Have been flying air asia for over 4 years from Manila to Tokyo and kansai as well as several local flights from Manila to Bacolod and Cebu.. 3 planes were down for maintenance and caused havoc.. need to invest in new fleet or seriously clean and upgrade the existing fleet. Will not be flying anymore until fixed. Several options out there now to choose from as air asia prices have skyrocketed.. no point in using them anymore . Severally upset passenger here. They can’t even manage the queuing of Zones for boarding as it’s a crab fest free for all now. No discipline and let the passengers in line to board just run into any lane possible.. and priority luggage?? Forget it I’ve paid for it for the last 6 flights and never got it first.. air asia has turned into a expensive joke.. use Cebu pacific or zip air now..

We had three flight delays before eventually taking off 3 hours late. Inflight service was very limited, but it was a relatively short flight. Luggage was delivered promptly.

Hi, did you visit Japan during Spring? We're planning to visit on mid of February 2019 but I want to see cherry blossoms so bad. Are you aware if I will be able to see some or should I just forget my dream?

hi, just want to ask, if i will be roaming around the city of tokyo (just the inner city) following your itineraries for the inner city, is the 3 day-unlimited subway pass worth it? i dont plan to go to the neighboring cities. just around tokyo. usually tsukiji, ueno, asakusa, shinjuku odaiba and roponggi are the places i want to to go during my 4-day stay. im torn between sticking to the ICOCA card(coz i'll be coming from osaka) and TOKYO Subway pass. or should i only stick to the ICOCA card? appreciate your advise :-)

Hi! I need someone to talk to directly on msgr. regarding this DIY trip to Tokyo. Hope you colud help me. Big thanks in advance!

Hi! Did you already book your accommodation here in PH or, when you are already in japan?

Mahirap na maghanap nag hostel na tag P1,000 ngayon. Even capsule hotels, parang nasa P1,500/night. Also, if you arrive in Japan at 11:35am, most likely, your return flight leaves at around 12:30pm. So sa 3rd day, wala kana magagawa since you need to be at the airport 2 hours before flight, then travel time pa.

How to Travel from Philippines to Japan as a Tourist

Great news for those who want to visit Japan – the country has been gradually reopening from June 2022 and will be fully open starting October 11th 2022! And while there are still regulations as to who can travel to Japan and what they can do while there, the rules are much more lax than they were when the pandemic began.

Also Read:  7 Reasons Why Filipinos Should Work in Japan

Japan is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. It’s known for its beautiful landscapes, delicious food and friendly people. However, if you’re planning to visit Japan from the Philippines, you must understand the measures in place to ensure your safety while there. Here’s what you need to know:

Table of Contents

Visit Japan from the Philippines: What You Need to Know

Who is currently allowed to travel to Japan?

Travelers from over 90 low-risk countries can enter Japan for group tours or independent travel starting on October 11, 2022. For passport holders from other countries, such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, they can travel without a visa in advance without having to get one starting on October 11.

The Japanese government has categorized all countries into three categories based on their COVID safety levels: red, yellow, and blue. The low-risk countries, which include Australia, Canada, the US, and Britain, are labeled as blue. These individuals do not need to self-isolate upon entering Japan, and triple-vaccinated individuals do not need to get tested prior to their departure.

What is required to travel to Japan, and what about visas?

In October 2022, a visa will no longer be required for tourists from most countries to visit Japan. Instead of applying for a visa at an embassy or consulate, foreign visitors need only:

  • Have stayed in a Group Blue country for 14 days prior to arrival.
  • Optional but recommended : To make your arrival at the airport smoother, download and use the Mysos app. This way you can upload documentation of things such as a negative COVID test and vaccination certificates before you even get to Japan.
  • You must upload the relevant documents to MySoS at least 6 hours before your flight’s departure.
  • To ensure that your reservation is successful, it’s best to pre-register at least two (2) or more days before your trip. You can begin the registration process up to 2 weeks in advance if you like.
  • Make sure your travel insurance plan covers you for any injuries or illnesses incurred during the trip.

For more information on entering Japan, refer to the checklist provided by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO): General Checklist For Traveling To Japan

Do I need to be vaccinated to go to Japan?

No vaccination is required to enter Japan. However, people who are triple vaccinated as of September 7, 2022, will not need to do a Covid test before they leave the country.

Under 18 years old, children traveling to Japan with their vaccinated parents or guardians will not need to bring vaccination certificates. They can also travel without negative Covid tests if they are accompanied by their parents or guardians.

Do I need to do a pre-departure Covid test?

Starting September 7th 2022, triple-vaccinated visitors no longer have to take a pre-departure test.

If you are not triple vaccinated, the pre-departure test is still required. You may seek further information regarding this requirement if you are still unsure of how to proceed.

Do I need to download any tracing apps in Japan?

Besides the Mysos App, which is designed as a Fast Track App, there is no requirement to download any apps to enter Japan.

The Mysos app works by providing you with a QR code, which is scanned at the airport by staff. This will allow them to access your information and verify your vaccination history. This ensures that your entry into Japan is quick and easy, without having to wait in line at immigration.

What measures are in place when I arrive in Japan?

The Japanese are traveling in their country and life is returning to normal, with restaurants and sights welcoming back visitors.

It is important for visitors to Japan and Japanese people alike to follow the country’s etiquette guidelines. Many Japanese wear face masks in public, and it’s not uncommon to see bottles of hand sanitizer tucked into pockets or purses.

In Japan, you will see markers on shop and store floors to encourage social distancing. Digital thermometers are at entrances of buildings along with the sign that asks people to wear a mask when they enter.

The Japan Tourism Agency has put together a nice set of graphics to illustrate the current travel etiquette guidelines:

Will I need to wear a mask in Japan?

Currently, the mask-wearing requirement is still in effect—but only as a recommendation rather than an actual law.

In May 2022, the Japanese government began to allow people to take off their masks more often. The decision was made because most of Japan’s large cities had excellent filtration systems and were safe for mask removal under certain conditions—such as when outdoors or in places with good ventilation, proper social distancing from strangers, etc.

The Japanese are known to wear masks in public if they have a cold or any other contagious illness, even before Covid happened. Since then, it has become customary to do so regardless of whether one is feeling sick—so much so that many people will still wear them when there’s no reason at all.

While official rules have changed, many people remain reluctant to take off their masks in public settings. The latest guidelines on wearing masks in Japan can be seen here.

Are there any restrictions on where tourists can travel?

Tourists can travel anywhere in Japan, but the government has advised visitors to avoid some areas because of damage from the earthquake and tsunami. These exclusion zones include northern Hokkaido and southern Kyushu—the two most distant islands.

We had a 9-day journey in Japan, exploring the famous parts and tourist attractions in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hakone, and Mt. Fuji. We will share some helpful info about our trip and some travel budget tips you can follow to travel efficiently and conveniently as a beginner.

We went for the Sakura Season (Cherry Blossom) on this trip. You can also visit Shibuya Station, Tokyo Tower, Disneyland, Ueno Park, Roppongi Hills, Mori Tower, Universal Studios in Osaka with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Dotonbori, Bamboo Forest, and all the famous tourist spots listed in the itinerary below.

Table of Contents:

Why should you visit Japan?

You cannot miss visiting Japan because it has everything you would be looking for in a place to travel – the food, the culture, the people, and the experience. The food is to die for. Visiting Japan will let you experience their heritage and its kindest people. You’ll be in a completely different world from the past and the future because Japan has it all.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

The best time to visit Japan is every new season . They say that after you go to Japan, you’ll definitely come back again because every season has a lot to offer. Every traveler cannot miss experiencing the particular season of each tourist attraction, whether winter in Hokkaido or Autumn in Kyoto.

The weather in Japan is chilly from December to February as it is the winter season. Spring starts from March until April when the famous Sakura Season ( Cherry Blossom ) also occurs. Summer begins in June until August. Autumn starts in September to November.

How to travel Japan from the Philippines?

The most common route to travel to Japan from the Philippines is by taking a flight from Manila Airport to Tokyo Narita Airport or Manila to Kansai Airport if you want to start your journey at Osaka, Japan. It takes four hours and thirty minutes to reach Japan from the Philippines by airplane.

How to travel Japan with the most affordable budget?

To book the cheapest flights, you can find an airline promo at airlinepromo.net and search for your desired dates. That website will give you the most reasonable flight comparison.

We recommend booking as early as three months before your flight departure to avail the cheapest airfare. That’s one of the best tips we have learned before traveling to any destination.

You can start your vacation in Japan in either Tokyo or Osaka; therefore, you can book for Tokyo (Narita Airport) or Osaka (Kansai Airport). Those are always the flights with the cheapest airfare compared to other airports and routes.

Consider the weather before your travel to know what clothes you will need to pack.

Do you need a JR Pass to travel to Japan?

Yes, if you stay for seven days or more and want to explore many tourist spots conveniently. This ticket will give you unlimited travel. JR Pass already includes train, bus, and ferry. The train is the fastest and cheapest mode of transportation in Japan.

japan jr pass

We also recommend air travel from Tokyo to Osaka or some other farther parts of Japan to save time and money. Bullet train (Shinkansen) is costly in that case, but if you’re really exploring more Japanese prefectures, buying a JR Pass (Japan Rail Pass) is recommended for you.

What are the benefits of using a JR Pass in Japan?

Japan Rail Pass can be used on trains, buses, and ferries across the entire part of Japan. It can also be used on all shinkansen trains (bullet trains) except Nozomi and Mizuho trains and covers all the fees involved.

JR Pass can be used for 7, 14, or 21 days. The price for 7-day usage starts at $279. JR Pass is beneficial if you explore Japan in a week or more.

Japan Travel Guide for Beginners and First-time Travelers

Our adventures in Japan started in Tokyo. Besides the photos here, you can also watch the videos I made to sum up my recent travel to Japan.

We went in the first week of April, the weather was still cold, and it was raining every other day.

The weather in Japan every April has both sunny and rainy days. I recommend visiting Shibuya Station, Ginza, and Dotonbori at night for the amazing lights and sights. Fantastic to take photos.

You can use the itinerary below as your Japan travel guide. It’s straightforward to find Japan’s famous places and tourist spots as every train station will connect you to them.

Besides, every train station in Japan has a kind and approachable staff. You can ask them in English any question about the place or route you are going.

Do not miss experiencing the Onsen (Japanese hot spring) .  Some 5-star hotels offer free Onsen for every accommodation.

onsen in japan

We checked in at Merveille Club in Hakone on the way to our Mt. Fuji tour. Unfortunately, the weather in Mt. Fuji did not let us see the iconic volcano. We will try some of their hot springs on our next travel to Japan.

How to find cheap Japan travel package?

Some travel packages are available for Japan tours, but we find them expensive, so we just made a Do-It-Yourself trip. We saved around $1,000 for our 9-day Japan travel.

I don’t use Airbnb these days because prices go up even when I clear out my browser’s cookies and cache. I like cheap deals from Booking.com for all my hotel accommodations these days. For my flights, of course, airlinepromo.net saves the day.

If you’re not traveling alone, you can save a lot of money on your food expenses since typical restaurants offer big servings and unlimited rice.

Big servings of food for one person can be enjoyed by two. People in Japan are very generous. Just a reminder, though, you can’t take out remaining foods from restaurants in Japan when you dine inside the resto.

Japan Trip Budget Philippines (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hakone)

Currently we are thinking:

5n or 7n Kyoto (how long do we need? we're planning to base ourselves here and do day trips)

3n Mijayami (1 day visit to Hiroshima )

3n Alpes - not sure what to do here, tour Takayama , Matsumoto, or base ourselves in Nikko and do day trips

Then we wanted a week at a beach somewhere and were thinking the Philippines as we haven't been there.

We are trying not to travel every couple of days, so wanted to base ourselves in locations and trip from these if that makes sense, as we thought this would be more relaxing.

Does this itinerary sound good? Could you advise on best way to spend three days in the Alps, and is Philippines a good choice for a beach holiday at the end? If it is where would be best to stay there?

You can look up your choices at this site, too. https://www.japan-guide.com

Japan and the Philippines are night and day... different. You need to go through Manila to get anywhere. Not my favorite city.

Maybe you can look at Okinawa for a beach resort. The outer islands are lovely for doing nothing.

https://japancheapo.com/places-to-stay/okinawa-resorts-private-beaches/

Of course, there's always Guam, which just a short plane ride away.......

We had considered going to Okinawa, but were told the beaches weren't amazing and the weather would be warm rather than hot, so thought we'd go somewhere completely different. If we fly into Manilla is it easy to get to a beach resort, or is it another flight ?

You can take the Shin Hotaka ropeway and walk around there (top of the mountain) -- but be prepared for COLD.

https://shinhotaka-ropeway.jp/en/

You would need to take another plane to get to a proper resort in the Philippines. https://guidetothephilippines.ph/articles/islands-and-beaches/philippines-beach-resorts

If you go to the outer islands of Okinawa, the beaches are pristine and the water is clear. That said,, March might be cold. April, around now, is nicer. The weather is warm, not hot. It's spring.

Thanks for your links, I hadn't realised the alpes would be so cold, is it worth including them in our itinerary bearing in mind when we are going, or would you visit somewhere else instead?

US, Japan, Philippines trilateral deal to change dynamic in South China Sea, Marcos says

A cooperation agreement by the Philippines, the United States, and Japan will change the dynamic in the South China Sea and the region, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Friday, April 12, while seeking to assure China it was not a target.

“I think the trilateral agreement is extremely important,” Marcos told a press conference in Washington a day after meeting US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in the  nations’ first trilateral summit.

“It is going to change the dynamic, the dynamic that we see in the region, in ASEAN in Asia, around the South China Sea,” Marcos said, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

US sees no reason for China to see US meetings with Japan, Philippines as a threat

WASHINGTON, USA – The White House said on Friday, April 12, there is no reason for China to see a US summit this week with Japan and the Philippines as a threat.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby spoke after China complained to Japan and the Philippines about some of the rhetoric emerging from President Joe Biden’s summit talks with the leaders of Japan and the Philippines this week.

“These meetings were not about any one other nation. This was about deepening and revitalizing existing alliances and partnerships and strengthening some new ones,” Kirby told reporters.

“There’s no reason for the PRC to look at this as any kind of a threat. This was simply a discussion between three allies about mutual challenges and quite frankly mutual opportunities that we are trying to explore in the Indo-Pacific region,” he said. – Rappler.com

State Dept. Is Sending Its Top Diplomat for East Asia to China

The announcement comes days after President Biden met jointly with the leaders of Japan and the Philippines to discuss Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific region.

Daniel J. Kritenbrink seen on a dark background.

By Aishvarya Kavi

Reporting from Washington

The top U.S. diplomat for East Asia will travel to China on Sunday, the State Department announced, just days after President Biden met with the leaders of Japan and the Philippines in Washington as part of a broad diplomatic outreach in the region to counter China’s aggression.

Daniel J. Kritenbrink, the assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, will travel with Sarah Beran, Mr. Biden’s top China adviser on the National Security Council. They will be in China until Tuesday, meeting with officials “as part of ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication and to responsibly manage competition,” according to a statement from the State Department.

China’s moves in the Indo-Pacific region were a focus at the White House this week during a three-day state visit by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan that ended with a first-ever three-way summit with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines. That nation has borne the brunt of China’s intimidation campaign in the South China Sea.

Tensions between China and the United States have recently increased amid concern that China might begin a conflict over Taiwan, and because the United States is treaty-bound to defend the Philippines.

In a meeting at the State Department on Friday, Enrique Manalo, the foreign secretary of the Philippines, said that “China’s escalation of its harassment” continued to take a toll on the country, recently injuring four Filipino seamen. Also present at the meeting were Antony J. Blinken, the secretary of state; Lloyd J. Austin III, the secretary of defense; Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser; and their three counterparts from the Philippines.

In the past several years, Japan has moved closer to the United States on countering China by increasing military spending and siding with Washington in global diplomacy on the world stage. That has included standing with Ukraine in its war against Russia, while China reaffirms ties with Russia.

The last high-level U.S. official to make a trip to China was Janet L. Yellen, the treasury secretary, who returned from Beijing this month with little to show for four days of top-level economic meetings.

Mr. Biden concluded the Thursday meeting with his counterparts from Japan and the Philippines by saying that America’s commitment to their defense was not in question.

“When we stand as one,” he said, “we are able to forge a better peace for all.”
