Some itineraries include an overnight stay in the Seychelles, Egypt or Richards Bay, allowing you to explore even more. Experience the splendor of ancient tombs in Safaga, Egypt. Or take a bus tour to Signal Hill for a magnificent sunset. The choice is yours with longer times in port.

Flavors as Diverse as its Landscapes

Flavors as Diverse as its Landscapes

Dutch, French, Indian and Malaysian meld to create the Afrikaans-style of cooking. Braai or shisa nyama, which means ‘burn the meat,’ is like western BBQ. For a meaty snack, try Biltong. Served in a brown bag, these spiced strips are akin to jerky. Wondering about Slap Chips? Try these vinegar-doused fries alone or in a Gatsby sandwich. Seafood lovers can rejoice too at Mossel Bay, whose name means bay of mussels. Need a ‘dop’ or drink? A favorite is Amarula, a cream liqueur made from the fruit of the Marula tree. Elephants get drunk eating its fermented fruit.

Scouting out a herd of elephants on the Zambezi River

CroisiEurope recognizes the importance of admiring the scenery up close, offering many small group excursions to choose from across land and water—and among the highlights are CroisiEurope’s holidays in Southern Africa. Packages ranging from 9–13 days allow ample time to explore four countries, the best of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, and two national parks.

Elephants mingle with the birds of Matusadona

Elephants mingle with the birds of Matusadona

You can tour the world-famous Victoria Falls on foot (or on an optional early-morning helicopter excursion), travel via small watercraft on the Chobe, Zambezi, and Gache Gache rivers, explore Chobe National Park by Jeep, and see elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalos, and thousands of birds in the area around Matusadona National Park. These trips also give you the chance to discover traditional villages, stay at a private lodge on Impalila Island, and, perhaps most incredible, gain unrivaled access to the majestic, expansive Lake Kariba.

Sailing Lake Kariba

Hippopotami Elephants are among the wildlife you can see on Lake Kariba.

As the largest water reservoir on earth, Lake Kariba boasts a fascinating history and a thriving ecosystem among its islands and inlets of northern Zimbabwe. From colorful birdlife and awe-inspiring crocodiles to the legend of river deity NyamiNyami, there will be much to admire, along with its stunning sunset views as you sail past flooded plains, hills, and forests. Only CroisiEurope’s two ships have access to Kariba. And with the tour operators’ low-emission Green Ship Label engines running on GTL fuel, the lake’s waters remain calm and clean.

Africa in style

As soon as you enter the dining room, you’ll know immediately that you’re in for something extraordinary. Your voyage includes all onboard meals and drinks (including generous wine lists), and the ship’s kitchen is overseen by head chef Alain Bohn, a member of the prestigious Association of the Maîtres Cuisiniers de France. On CroisiEurope’s African trips, menus feature refined regional cuisine—think grilled, stewed, and braised meats with flavorful and some spicy sauces, plus local vegetables. You’ll explore the flavors of your destination with a French touch, including sublime croissants and pastries at the lodge and on board. Meet friends for pre-dinner drinks on the sun deck, catch a live act in the lounge, or, better yet, do it all.

Cabins aboard CroisiEurope ships are exceptional, too. Each spacious room of the African Dream and Zimbabwean Dream , the two vessels that navigate Lake Kariba, boasts panoramic views and either a French balcony or one with seating. The experience is akin to a floating luxury hotel.

The Kaza Lodge in Namibia

CroisiEurope’s private lodges offer the ultimate in comfort, too. Generously sized bungalows, each with a private pool, are nestled in the heart of the wilderness for immersive, otherworldly experiences. It’s all part of a journey that’s much more than a getaway when you travel with CroisiEurope.

Luxury Cruises to Africa

On a luxury Africa cruise, you will gain a unique perspective of this fascinating, multicultural region, whether you’re browsing the markets of Morocco or exploring the antiquities in the Egyptian port of Alexandria.

Celebrity’s itineraries take you to Casablanca, lying on Morocco’s sun-drenched Atlantic coast, Tangiers, gazing across the Straits of Gibraltar to Spain, and Alexandria, Egypt’s historic Mediterranean port. Each is different and every visit helps you to unpeel the layers of history that have shaped this region.

Africa Cruise Highlights

Ancient history.

From the iconic ancient library of Egypt’s Alexandria to the breathtaking and bold structure of the Hassan II mosque in Casablanca, there’s history at every turn. The Mediterranean is considered the cradle of civilization and a cruise is the ideal opportunity to learn about the different cultures that have passed through the region over the millennia. Sip tea in the squares of Tangier, and follow in the footsteps of 19th-century poets and artists. Visit 2,000-year-old holy sites, or shop in a 500-year-old souk for hand-made souvenirs.

Fun in the Sun and Sand

North Africa is rich in natural beauty, from green mountain ranges to leafy oases and the rolling dunes of the desert. Celebrity’s African ports have access to coastal and water activities, desert tours, hiking trails, and urban adventures that blend nature into human achievement and civilization. Make sure to check out a camel tour on the fringes of the Sahara, or explore the beach clubs on the golden sands around Casablanca.

Art and Artisan Gift Shopping

Cruises to North Africa offer an abundance of incredible shopping experiences. Visit labyrinthine bazaars in Egypt for cotton and clothing, or a Moroccan souk for hand-woven rugs and kilims. You can also shop for hand-carved olivewood and jewelry, dates and spices, and leatherware. Even if you prefer to window shop, the colors, scents and sounds of Africa’s markets and bazaars are irresistible.

Africa Cruise Ports

Casablanca, morocco.

The bustling, vibrant city of Casablanca is a feast for the senses, and one of the busiest ports along this coastline. This city boasts the European charm with Moroccan tradition, and is the country’s commercial center and largest population center. Visit the iconic Hassan II mosque as you stroll the scenic Boulevard de la Corniche along the sea. Sip traditional mint tea in the picturesque medina squares. Finish your day shopping for ornate wood carvings, hand-made leather bags, and decorative tea sets at the Exposition Nationale d’Artisanat emporium.

Alexandria, Egypt

The city of Alexandria is brimming with ancient history, museums, mosques, and modern amenities for travelers looking for an adventure. It’s also a gateway to Cairo and the great pyramids of Giza as an overnight trip.

Make sure to visit the famous Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which commemorates the ancient Great Library of Alexandria, and houses over eight million books. Dine on some of the best of Egyptian seafood, sip on local tea, or sample sheesha (traditional flavored tobacco) in the culturally rich area of Anfushi, just west of the Citadel of Qaitbay. Be sure to make a quick visit to the Ras el-Tin palace, a former Sultanic summer home that’s visually stunning from an architectural perspective.

Tangier, Morocco

As a mid-20th century hub for European and American artists, writers, and expats, Tangier developed a reputation as a cultural center for North Africa. Today, it remains an important cultural heritage city and is a popular stop on Africa cruises. While in Tangier, don’t miss the Kasbah Museum, which showcases many of Morocco’s most treasured artifacts from the Roman and Islamic dynasty periods. For a fascinating day trip, head to Asilah, where you can shop and walk through the fortified Portuguese-built old town before heading back to your ship.

Africa Cruise Itineraries

Typical itineraries for African cruises include 10- to 12-night trips that span either the western Mediterranean or the eastern Mediterranean. These itineraries include additional calls in places such as Greece, Israel, Turkey, Spain, and the Canary Islands.

Why Travel With Adventure Life

south africa safari cruise

This Norwegian Cruise sailing takes you on a bucket list adventure: What it's like aboard

south africa safari cruise

For Kylie Herd, an Australian passenger on Norwegian Dawn’s Feb. 25 southern Africa itinerary, cruising has been the best way to check places off her bucket list.

“I just go with whatever cruise line has the itinerary that I want to do at the time that I’m available. It tends to be Norwegian, and when I saw that Norwegian had all these African cruises, I just thought, ‘I’m going to spend summer in Africa,’ because it’s an amazing itinerary,” she told USA TODAY.

When it comes to cruising, most Americans probably think of bopping around the Caribbean or checking out the wilds of Alaska if they’re feeling especially adventurous, but that’s really just scratching the surface. Cruise lines are increasingly offering diverse itineraries including expedition cruises to remote parts of the globe and introductory sailings to help travelers explore countries and regions they might never visit otherwise.

Madagascar was the real draw for months of consecutive cruises on the Dawn for Herd.

“I’ve been trying to go to Madagascar for years. I always wanted to go there way before the movies ever came out. It’s one of those places that’s really difficult to get to,” she said. “When I saw Madagascar on a cruise itinerary I was like, ‘I have to do it.’ ”

Although the Feb. 25 sailing had to skip Madagascar for logistical reasons after a delay departing Mauritius, Herd said that she was able to visit the country earlier on her trip and that it was a real highlight.

Norwegian’s Africa itineraries had various changes and missed ports throughout the season. Passenger contracts give cruise lines some leeway to alter itineraries on short notice for reasons including weather or conditions on the ground that prevent ships from reaching or being accommodated safely in a scheduled port. Such changes can be especially common in regions prone to political unrest or that lack sophisticated port facilities.

Even so, Herd said she understood why passengers who missed out would be frustrated, but she encouraged her fellow travelers to keep an eye on the positive. “I understand the disappointment. I was disappointed, too, but we’re still having a great time.”

The Feb. 25 cruise still stopped at Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, which has an active volcano, as well as ports in South Africa where travelers could spot local wildlife.

Safari from a cruise

Norwegian Dawn stopped at four ports in South Africa, three of which offered safari experiences as shore excursions.

▶ From Richard’s Bay, passengers could visit the iSimangasilo Wetland Park , home to elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, zebras and other classic African big game. The park is about an hour and a half drive from the port, and Norwegian’s shore excursion included two game drives, snorkeling and a traditional South African braai, or barbecue.

Just as cruise itineraries can sometimes be subject to last-minute changes, safaris are at the whim of wild animals. Sightings are not guaranteed, but patience and vigilance are often rewarded.

▶ In Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Norwegian Dawn’s passengers could visit Addo Elephant National Park, also about an hour and a half drive from the port.

As the name suggests, Addo is home to a huge and docile population of more than 600 elephants. These animals often congregate around watering holes accessible from well-worn safari tracks.

Even after a strong rainfall the night before the excursion, which allowed elephants to retreat into the bush and temporarily lessen their reliance on overtaxed wells, dozens of the creatures greeted visitors coming from the ship for two-hour game drives.

▶ In Mossel Bay, passengers could also access private game reserves, which often have a higher concentration of wildlife roaming free but can include animals that are not directly indigenous to the area.

Cape Town and the winelands

There’s more to Africa than safaris, and Cape Town is an especially good place to experience metropolitan life and other kinds of outdoor activities on the continent.

South Africa’s legislative capital offers excellent hiking, a great foodie culture, beautiful (if slightly chilly) Atlantic beaches, penguins and more.

For travelers willing to explore beyond the city, South Africa’s wine country is close at hand in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and many vineyards offer tastings and meal experiences. One Norwegian excursion took passengers to the Blaauwklippen wine estate in Stellenbosch, which is best known for its Zinfandel.

Is an Africa cruise worth it?

From a financial standpoint, a cruise around Africa can be an excellent way to explore. For American travelers, however, flights to and from the ship are often more expensive than the cruise itself.

For example, a 13-day Norwegian itinerary that begins in Cape Town on Dec. 7 and ends in Mauritius on Dec. 20 has prices that start at $899 per person for an inside stateroom, but flights can be well over $1,000 round trip. The current cheapest itinerary from Detroit, for example, is a 42-hour slog on multiple airlines via Montreal and Dubai to Cape Town. The return trip is a bit shorter, at 31 hours, also via Dubai and Montreal. That routing would cost $1,694 per person in economy as of March 18, according to Google Flights.

Logistically speaking, though, it can be much easier to book a cruise and rely on the line’s shore excursions to expand one's horizons than to coordinate one's own safari.

“With multiple diverse ports of call within one coastal continental area, our Africa voyages provide our guests the opportunity to explore lush rainforests or volcanoes, experience captivating wildlife tours, learn about the rich culture on the South African coastline, indulge in Cape Town’s incredible wine regions, and so much more,” Brian Gilroy, vice president of revenue management and itinerary planning for Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the African cruise market is less mature than the Caribbean – at many ports, there just aren’t comparable facilities to handle big ships. That doesn’t mean the cruises can’t or don’t happen, just that sometimes the operation is a little less fluid than the well-oiled Miami machine.

“Our 11- and 12-day cruises start and end in either Cape Town, South Africa, or Port Louis, Mauritius, and include an overnight stay in one of those magnificent cities, giving our guests the chance to fully explore what these regions offer. The variety of adventures our guests can experience in these destinations are endless, which makes for a truly unforgettable cruise experience," Gilroy said.

Travelers may be more likely to encounter a hiccup on their Africa cruise, but that’s all part of traveling to a new and exciting place. A missed port or an extra sea day can be a great time time to take stock, focus on the highlights, enjoy the experience of unlocking a new destination, and maybe take another sip of the wine your onboard sommelier recommended.

Just take a page out of Herd the Australian’s book. Despite some schedule changes, she said, “I’ve loved every single thing.”

The reporter on this story received access to this sailing from Norwegian. USA TODAY maintains editorial control of content.

Africa-Overview

Africa provides for some of the most prolific wildlife viewing available and the chance to glimpse the idyllic landscape that has inspired many a work of art. You can combine a river cruise and safari into one adventure – with five itineraries to choose from – and discover the part of the world that is known for iconic sites like Cape Town’s Table Mountain and revolutionary leader Nelson Mandela.

The-Chobe-River

The Chobe River is undeniably one of Africa’s most beautiful rivers, supporting a diversity and concentration of wildlife unparalleled anywhere else on the continent. The Chobe riverfront attracts an almost unbelievable density of game, especially during the dry season – from March through November – when water inland is scarce and migratory animals head towards the river.

Wildlife-National-Parks

Experience the beauty and natural wonders of the Greater Kruger, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Serengeti national parks along with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stare wide-eyed as Africa’s largest population of elephants freely swim and splash about; feel humbled as you spot the graceful giraffe bow his elongated neck to quench his thirst at a watering hole and listen to the grunt of the rhino resting nearby.

Cape-Town

From iconic Table Mountain to dramatic coastal roads leading to the Cape of Good Hope to the vineyards carpeting the Winelands, Cape Town, South Africa offers something for everyone. The proximity to nature is a constant source of wonder in Cape Town, whether it is watching whales breach from a restaurant deck overlooking beautiful False Bay or seeing a veritable sanctuary of penguins up close at Boulders Beach.

Johannesburg

Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city, with a multi-cultural, cosmopolitan vibe. Wonderful restaurants and sidewalk cafés offer virtually every type of cuisine, while glitzy stores and art galleries like Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square are a shopper’s paradise.

Victoria-Falls

Recognized as one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World,” Victoria Falls has a combined height and width that make it one of the largest waterfalls in the world. The UNESCO-designated falls are a mile wide, span the entire breadth of the Zambezi River; and are twice the height of Niagara Falls.

Tanzania

Tanzania, located in East Africa, is the land of safaris, as it is home to four of the African continent’s most renowned national parks. Each park is alive with a wild world of its own, and you’ll get to experience all four on our Golden Trails of East Africa itinerary.

The mighty roar of the lion, the powerful call of the elephant, the thunderous clap of a rhinoceros herd – Africa’s incredible national parks are most certainly "where the wild things are."

Tarangire-National-Park

Tarangire boasts a variety of wildlife as diverse as its landscape. Tarangire is home to all of Tanzania’s most iconic animals, including wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and giraffes.

Lake-Manyara-National-Park

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Africa’s alkaline water lakes, which attracts a vast population of water birds and a wide range of animals. The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions.

Ngorongoro-Conservation-Area

Cape Town's Victoria and Albert Waterfront is a popular area with shops, entertainment venues and over 80 restaurants. Trips may be offered to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned during the apartheid era.

Durban is the busiest port in South Africa and is a popular tourist resort. It is famous for the Golden Mile, a long stretch of sandy beach ideal for surfers, swimmers and sunbathers, and bordered by uShaja Marine World, hotels and some of Durban's best Art Deco buildings. The city's Sri Sri Radhanath Temple of Understanding is a new and opulent temple which is open to visitors and has an underground restaurant.

The capital of Mozambique is also known as the City of Acacias, and was once a Portuguese Colony. The railway station and the Iron House were built by Gustav Eiffel who designed the Eiffel Tower, and south of the city are several reserves and national parks, including the Maputo Elephant Reserve where visitors can also see flamingos, leopards, crocodiles and hippos. Locals sell wood carvings and batik cloth from stalls on the beach.

Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth is a green city with a number of parks and gardens, including the large and wildlife-rich Settler's Park. The Donkin Trail is a good way to see the city's sites, taking in the market Square and grand City Hall, the gothic library and old settler cottages. Beyond the city is the Big Five game reserve of Shamwari and Addo Elephant Park, where Cape Buffalo can also be seen.

Richards Bay

This industrial port in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is the gateway to Zululand, the dunes, swamp, forests and wildlife of St Lucia Wetlands - hippos and crocodiles, pelicans, storks and flamingoes - and Hluhluwe Umfolosi Game Reserve. Other trips may be offered to the Shakaland Experience, a recreation of a Zulu homestead. Richards Bay has a new waterfront shopping mall, the Boardwalk.

This Namibian town is famous for the nearby sand dunes, the largest being Dune 7 offering wide-ranging views of the coast. Offshore is a large platform built to collect guano, now a major export, and an unusual and popular restaurant built on a raft. The area around Walvis Bay is an important wetland, a habitat for flamingos and the Damara tern. Trips may be offered to the Namib Desert, the Skeleton Coast - an inhospitable and arid terrain fronted by pounding surf and over a thousand shipwrecks - Swakopmund, Pelican Point seal colony and Sandwich Harbour.

Zanzibar (Tanzania)

The archipelago of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania has white sand beaches and a string of coral reefs. Its main industries are dhow building and the cultivation of cloves, cinnamon and ginger, both of which feature on tours. Stone Town is the old quarter of Zanzibar City, and a World Heritage Site with many interesting buildings built from coral rock. The Old Dispensary's four stories are decorated with wood-carved balconies and the House of Wonders with its tiers of pillars is now the Museum of History and Culture.

World News | 8 cruise passengers left behind on African island race to catch up with ship

The Norwegian Dawn is docked at Pier 88 in New York Monday, April 18, 2005. (AP Photo/Tina Fineberg)

A group of Norwegian Cruise Line passengers left behind in the African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe raced across seven countries over the course of 48 hours in a bid to catch up with and reboard their ship.

The tourists, two Australians and six Americans, had been traveling aboard the Norwegian Dawn , enjoying what was supposed to be a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain. However, their adventures took a turn on March 27, when the group failed to return to the ship for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m.

Among the tardy passengers were Jay and Jill Campbell , of South Carolina, who had previously joined three cruises with the same liner. Jill Campbell told NBC News on Tuesday that while she respects certain rules must be observed, the ship’s crew “followed those rules too rigidly” in this circumstance.

“I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and the well-being of the customers should be their first priority, and that should be placed first,” she said. “We believe there was a basic duty of care that they’ve forgotten about, so it does concern us.”

The couple went on to explain they were on a tour that ran long, but said the operator notified the cruise captain , explaining that some of their passengers would be late. The local Coast Guard also lent a hand, shuttling the group of tourists to their ship before it set sail that afternoon.

But they were already too late, and the boat’s captain declined to let them onboard.

“The harbor master tried to call the ship , the captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number. They said, ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails,’” Jay Campbell said in a separate interview with ABC 15.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us, and then go on the way.”

As a result, the Campbells and the other six passengers left behind were stranded for days on the island. They were ultimately able to arrange flights to meet the ship on Monday in Gambia, then later in Senegal after the ship was unable to dock in Gambia due to weather conditions.

It was a process they called “very difficult.”

“You’re dealing with … language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies … trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to,” Jay Campbell said Tuesday morning on the “TODAY” show.

Jay and Jill Campbell

While the Campbells said they arrived in Senegal on Monday night, with enough time to reboard the ship, they weren’t sure they wanted to after what they experienced.

Norwegian in a statement to NBC emphasized all passengers are responsible for making arrangements that ensure they return to the ship on time for departure.

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal,” a cruise line spokesperson said. “We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available.”
