Tessa Violet talks current tour, new album and self-love
Singer-songwriter Tessa Violet, who has reached fame with multiple viral songs on social media, is currently on her North American “MY GOD!” tour. She is known best for her songs “Crush” and “YES MOM”, which went viral on TikTok.
Violet began as a YouTuber in 2007, posting popular fan-made music videos and making vlogs while working abroad in Hong Kong and Thailand as a fashion model and under the alias “Meekakitty.”
She debuted her music career with “Maybe Trapped, Mostly Troubled” in March of 2014, going on to create music that bounces around the wide spectrum that is pop music and to collaborate with artists like Cavetown, Lovelytheband and Chloe Moriondo.
Fresh off her performance at her dream venue, Chicago’s House of Blues, The Daily Illini talked to Violet about her expanding journey, her newest album and more.
This interview has been slightly edited for length and clarity.

The DI: What have you learned about the music industry since your beginnings as a YouTuber?
Violet: You can’t build a career, a big one, just as one person. It really does take a village. As a YouTuber, you can do it, just you. But music is much more complex, and it requires a village and I gotta say, it’s better that way, because it’s less lonely. I love to be out on the road with my tour group, our buddies.
DI: Who do you think is a part of your village?
Violet: Definitely Dante (Cimadamore), my fiancé. We were working together for five years before we started dating. He’s been a part of the band since when we were playing tiny, tiny clubs to like 50 people. The whole team at Tag (Records). On the road, it’s my TM (tour manager), Walker, my merch person Nikki. Nikki has been on tour with me for years now. I feel very connected to her. She’s gonna be a bridesmaid in my wedding.
DI: Have there been any struggles from that shift from a one person team to it being more collaborative?
Violet: It requires trusting people, but it also requires working with people that you can trust. It definitely took me a while to find a team I felt good about. I didn’t have a music manager for a long time. I was doing it all on my own. I didn’t feel like I was taking meetings with anyone that understood me and where I wanted to go.
DI: Your last album had more of a kind of bedroom-pop vibe to it. This new album is moving onto hyperpop. How is that musical shift?
Violet: For my internal experience, it doesn’t feel like a diversion. To me, it just feels like an expansion. Like on “Bad Ideas,” “Crush.” Definitely a pop song. I just have more elevated pop songs on this record. But then I have “Words Ain’t Enough” which is an acoustic, slow song.
DI: What do you think is next for the expansion?
Violet: Well, what’s true about me is that when I listen to albums, I like them to have a variety of genres on it. I’m not the sort of person that wants to hear the same song 12 times with different lyrics. That’s true for both “Bad Ideas” and “MY GOD!” There are songs that are slammers and moshers and there are sad songs that are acoustic and more organic.
DI: Is there anything that feels new to you about this album?
Violet: Self-love? That’s new. I feel like I did a lot of internal work. “Bad Ideas” was all about getting sober and breaking unhealthy cycles with love relationships. In between that and “MY GOD!” I’ve done a lot of work to be like, “Yeah, I’m rooting for myself.” “MY GOD!” was the first song I wrote in that vein. And then, “YES MOM” came out. It was such a big moment for me. It’s fun to see people reacting to it and being like, “Yeah, this makes me feel good.”
DI: This album spotlights power, sexuality and femininity. Why are these topics important to you?
Violet: I saw these TikToks before I wrote “MY GOD!”, the song. It was a lesbian person talking about how they have this interaction with women who’ve never been with women before, that they are totally disconnected from what it is they desire. Being conditioned as women, they’ve always prioritized the pleasure of men. And that is what that sex act is, the pleasure of man. I’m a straight woman, but even seeing that I’m like, “Oh, my god, me too. What is my desire?” If you don’t know what you want, then you don’t know what direction to lead in and you just wander aimlessly toward your death.
DI: You’ve kind of shifted your visual aesthetic recently. How do you think that that’s reflected your musical growth?
Violet: We finished the album before we did any of the visuals. Athena (Lawton) has definitely been a big influence on, “Oh, what’s the visual story? What are the costumes saying?” The visuals were black because that felt right for “YES MOM.” Then, as I started finishing the record, I was like, “That felt right for that one song, but it doesn’t really feel right for the piece as a whole.” The album is more feminine, more powerful and more joyful and more sad. It’s funny that I ended up coinciding with Barbie. We picked the colors before that was announced. Pink just felt right. It was Athena’s idea to wear armor, my idea to have conical tits.
DI: What are some artists that influenced this album?
Violet: Taylor Swift is always an influence for me. To me, this is my “Red” era. I love Doja Cat though I am less into it now that she’s like, “I don’t like my fans.” But the music slams, you know? Also I love Ashnikko and ABBA.
DI: On both “Bad Ideas” and “MY GOD!”, you have voice memo versions of some of the other songs. What do you think the value is of leaving raw voice memos on the album?
Violet: With “kitchen song,” here is something about that song when it’s just the voice and the acoustic guitar that was really special. Though the full band version is so much fun, I just felt like this version of the song needs to exist. That’s how it was when it started and I love how intimate it is. I love that I got to sing it with two of my dear friends. My fiancé, Dante, is one of the voices on that and my friend dodie is the other voice.
DI: In that song you describe this domestic life, writing kitchen songs for your love. How would you define a kitchen song?
Violet: A kitchen song is definitely something that you wrote on your own. Not a collaboration. It’s something that you write for the joy of writing and the joy of hearing your partner versus thinking about “How will people receive this?”. Anyone can write a kitchen song. My mom writes kitchen songs all the time, she’ll just sing something, observe what’s happening in the kitchen and make it rhyme.
DI: What’s a dream collab of yours?
Violet: I want to do something with dodie someday. We have a song we wrote together (called “ Burn ”) that people keep asking me for. And I’m like, “Dude, I’m down. I want to do it.” Every time I bring it up with dodie, like, “Are we gonna release this song or what?”, she’s like, “Yeah, I love this song, but I want to do it with my producer.” I’m like, “Do it!” This next year, maybe it’ll become a threat like, “If you don’t do it, I’m doing it! I’ll release it as a solo song!”
DI: What’s next for you?
Violet: I just finished this album. It took me four years. I am currently in the part of the process where I’m trying to get it out there. Because I’m so proud of it. I’m not quite ready to dive back into the writing process.

LIVE REVIEW | Tessa Violet brings the MY GOD! Tour with Frances Forever to the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles
Posted by Molly Hudelson | Sep 15, 2023 | Editorial , Featured , Live Reviews , Music , News , Reviews | 0 |
After releasing her third studio album, MY GOD! , in July, Tessa Violet embarked on the MY GOD! Tour with support from Frances Forever. The tour wrapped around the Southwestern US, up the East Coast and through the Midwest, before making the trek down the West Coast (with stops in Canada along the way). The MY GOD! Tour made its penultimate stop at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles this past Wednesday, September 6.
Even before Tessa Violet took to the stage, there was no mistaking who was about to perform: the stage was adorned with what a stained-glass-style portrait of Violet styled as a holy figure. Wearing a bubblegum pink bodysuit and matching thigh-high boots, along with a sheer, iridescent cape, she entered to immediate applause with “YES MOM”, the lead single from MY GOD! . But Tessa Violet doesn’t simply sing her songs. As she told the crowd at the Fonda, she performs spells: “I’m on this kick where I call songs ‘spells’ because they change the way you feel.”
But there were darker and more tender moments, too. “I Don’t Know Who I Am Without You” had a club-ready, danceable beat – though the lyrics were about grief. As Violet explained sitting down at a keyboard, “When The Curtain Falls” – a song about the loneliness that can come with success – was written after her manager suggested instead of sadness, she write a song about “something else – like being famous.” “Bad Ideas”, the title track of Violet’s 2019 sophomore album, was a sweetly romantic singalong that everyone could relate to. Whether you came to the MY GOD! Tour knowing every word, or simply wanting to have a good time – it was impossible not to fall under Tessa Violet’s spell.

Tessa Violet Debuts New Single 'Breakdown' Ahead of 2022 Headline Tour
The song is the latest taste of Tessa's forthcoming sophomore album.
Today, artist and songwriter Tessa Violet has debuted her new single, "BREAKDOWN." The song is the latest taste of Tessa's forthcoming sophomore album.
The new single continues the dynamism of Tessa's new era, delivering a one-two punch of slick alt-rock and earworm electro-pop defining a distinct sonic realm of Tessa's own. Backed by shapeshifting production, the driving track is a spunky celebration of life's inevitable lows, of which Tessa describes, "When you hit a new bottom and you think f it, dance party in hell."
Alongside the new single comes the announcement of Tessa's 2022 N. American headline tour, which will kick off Aug 30 and go on to traverse 23 markets. Tickets are on sale this Friday, May 27, 9amPT/12pmET. Catch Tessa next at Bottlerock festival this weekend. See full date listing below. Tickets available here.
Directly after wrapping her headline tour, Tessa will join Cavetown on their EU+UK fall 2022 tour as direct support, joined also by Orla Gartland on select dates. The run comes on the heels of Tessa's direct support slot on Cavetown's spring 2022 N. American tour. See the full Cavetown tour date listing below.
Today's release of "BREAKDOWN" follows the spring 2022 release of single "YES MOM," a bombastic self-love manifesto that has already attained 12M+ Spotify streams and landed Tessa on the cover of Spotify's SALT playlist as well as sparking a new Genius 'Verified.' Gaining momentum off the back of a massive self-launched TikTok trend, the song has amassed 70K+ unique TikTok creates with 350 million views on Tessa's creates alone.
Tessa's 2019 independently released debut album, Bad Ideas, has paved a foundation that has solidified her place among the top rising artists in alternative pop. The album earned Tessa a spot on Spotify's Times Square billboard and has seen nearly 300 million aggregate streams on hit single "Crush."
Stymied by the pandemic and her planned album tour off the table, Tessa blazed a path of her own through 2020/21, reworking several singles off Bad Ideas, including collaborations with MisterWives on "Bored" and Chloe Moriondo on "Words Ain't Enough." Tessa's standout rework of single "Games" featuring L.A. indie rock outfit lovelytheband and its Twilight-inspired video saw love from the likes of PAPER, LADYGUNN, and Hollywood Life. Single "Wishful Drinking" also received a spotlight on the heels of Tessa's massive TikTok trend that now has over 225k unique videos.
On the live side, Tessa kept eager fans engaged with the launch of an exclusive livestream event - 'Bad Ideas: The Experience' - which took place in May 2021 as a final celebration of Bad Ideas. Tessa also collaborated on a string of livestream performances with outlets such as SPIN, Bandsintown, and EARMILK and even garnered an 'Artist of the Week' designation by Live Nation / Ones To Watch.

Tessa Violet shines on "My God!" tour
Tessa Violet has spent years building a platform for herself within the alternative pop industry, and her work has paid off. With her extravagant on-stage outfits and classic yellow bob, Violet is becoming an easily recognizable figure within the genre. Having been on three tours within the past year alone — two independent and one with the noted alternative band “Half Alive” — she has set herself apart as being not just a musician but a performer.
The “My God!” tour kicked off in New Mexico July 27 and then traveled to Phoenix’s Crescent Ballroom for the second show of the over-month-long series. The tour’s name is drawn from the title of her newest album, which features some of her hit singles such as “YES MOM” and “You Are Not My Friend”.
Frances Garrett, professionally known as Frances Forever, will be opening for Violet for the duration of the tour. Known for their spunky pop sound and engaging lyrics, they took the online world by storm in 2020 with their song “Space Girl”.
When asked how they came to open for Violet, Garrett said, “Honestly, our managers were friends, and they were at lunch and were like ‘this would be a cool thing to happen’, and I feel like we have a similar fanbase.”
During their opening set, they engaged with the audience and passionately performed their songs, even falling to their knees on stage during some songs. They explained they draw their energy from the environment.
“I just feel it from the audience usually, or from the people that I’m playing with. Soraya, my guitarist, always has the best energy coming on stage and gives 110%,” Garrett said. “Like this is so fun and it’s so cool that I get to do this for a living, so that fuels up the energy.”
Violet’s set was electric, incorporating special effects and outfit changes to match the energy of her songs. Starting off the show with her pink shimmer bodysuit and later adding a matching tulle-like robe, Violet captivated the audience’s attention. Before her final songs and encore performance, she took a moment to leave the stage and change into a yellow corseted gown, from which the skirt later detached to reveal a second shimmer bodysuit, this time in a golden hue.
Her setlist included a mix of songs from her newest album, as well as a few singles and a collection of songs from her previously released album “Bad Ideas”, which she put out in 2019. During her show, Violet spoke about her experiences from her time being a songwriter and the power she feels her lyrics can hold.
“I do believe to be a songwriter is to be a spellcaster,” Violet told the crowd, referencing her belief that your words create your reality since they impact your mood and perspective.
She shared the stage with her drummer, Mike “The Machine” McKerracher, and her guitarist Dante Cimadamore, to whom she’s been publicly engaged since December 2022. Violet’s tour continued through the United States and parts of Canada until September when she began a brief stint on “The Road to Bittersweet Haze” tour with Cavetown and Cafuné.

Heartbreak, hype and Tessa Violet’s hypnotic self-love
The singer-songwriter brings her anthemic, empowering pop to 9:30 club on tuesday.
The idea that words of affirmation — repeated often enough and with enough faith — can create tangible outcomes might seem a bit, well, batty. But go listen to Tessa Violet. When she has the mic, manifesting feels like magic.
“To write a song about feeling good, it’s like casting a spell,” she says in a phone interview from the back of her tour bus as it drives through the Arizona desert. “It makes you feel good; even if you didn’t believe it at the beginning of the song, by the end, you’re like, ‘Oh, I can do anything.’”
Violet’s brand of magic is enchanting in her third album, “My God!,” released in July, on which the 33-year-old artist intersperses high-camp anthems and breakup ballads atop minimal pop beats. It’s evident in a music video featuring the opener, “Bad B----,” a hypnotic song about being a good witch — but a bad rhyming word — in which Violet poses as a classical statue come to life, and then a queen on her throne, declaring in a bubble-gum voice that she’s a “bona fide hit.”
In fact, she’s been something of a hit since around 2007, when, as a teenager, she started making vlogs online. Under the username Meekakitty, Violet was a trailblazing YouTuber, amassing over a million followers for her candid daily chats. But that was before she “thought of herself as an artist.”
“I feel like I’ve shaken that [YouTuber] title,” she says. “You need to be better at being an artist than you were at being an influencer.”
For the last decade, Violet’s focus has been on her music, but even in a different medium, she hasn’t lost the sincere voice that drew in fans since her earliest days online. It’s a big jump from the extravagance of her new album’s early songs to the softer melodies that grace the second half, but it’s in these later tracks that her self-confidence spell lifts, if only for a moment. In the tender “When the Curtain Falls,” she sings, almost to herself, “I wanna be somebody’s best friend.” The bottom drops out as she sighs and repeats the line.
“It’s overwhelming when you don’t know what a feeling is,” she says. “But when you can describe it and put a name to it, then you can look at it and see that it’s not as big. … I hope my songs can be tools for people to understand their own feelings.”
Violet walks the line between heartbreak and hype, not unlike other pop stars with brands built on empowerment — she’s closing some sets on this tour with “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga, another anthemic artist from whom Violet says she takes inspiration. And, like Gaga, Violet says it’s her goal to give fans an opportunity to “celebrate themselves.”
“I’m called to help people get in touch with their own power,” Violet says. “People are so insecure, and they don’t know themselves; they don’t give themselves permission to celebrate who they are. And I’m like, ‘No, you’re a gift. Other people enjoy you. Why not you? You enjoy you, too.’”
Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. (doors open) at 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. 930.com . $28.
