Most rotary airers have frames made from aluminium or steel.

Aluminium rotary washing lines are lightweight and rust resistant. These are their main benefits. They can be quite easy to carry in and out of storage, and don’t require as much strength to put up. Plus, aluminium is not prone to rust – although it can still corrode over time.

One of the main drawbacks of aluminium is that it’s not very strong. Therefore, rotary lines made from aluminium may be more likely to bend or buckle if loaded with too much weight compared to steel ones. Of course, this also depends on the design and construction of the washing line, so it isn’t a hard and fast rule. However, when directly comparing the properties of the metals, aluminium is weaker than steel.

Steel rotary washing lines are considered stronger and less likely to bend, warp or break than aluminium ones. This is their main advantage, and can be particularly useful if washing drying heavier items like duvets, blankets or towels.

Choosing a Line with Enough Space

If you’re a large family, you will likely want a rotary airer that has at least 50 metres of line , to give you enough washing line space to dry all the washing.

For smaller families, of just a couple of people, a rotary washing line with 30 – 40 metres of line should be sufficient.

Also consider:

• The types of items you will be drying , and how big they are. Different rotary washing lines vary in how much space they have between their arms, and therefore how much room there is for drying.
• If you want to dry large sheets, you will need the space between each arm to be wider than the width of the sheet.
• Rotary washing lines with three arms, instead of four, have more space between them.

It will be a lot easier to hang a king-size sheet on a rotary washing line that only has three arms .

However, lines with three arms instead of four can be weaker, especially if they are not well made. This is because less arms are having to support the same amount of weight as a four-arm line.

For this reason, high-quality three-arm lines can be more expensive than four-arm models because of the materials used.

Ground Spikes – How to Secure Your Line

You will need to install a ground socket to hold your rotary washing line.

If you already have one from a previous rotary washing line, you can avoid having to remove it and putting in a new one as long as you buy a washing line that fits the existing socket .

Quite a lot of washing lines either have a 40 mm pole, or a 32 mm pole. If there’s already a ground socket in your garden, check its diameter and make sure to buy a washing line that’s the same size. This will save a lot of hassle.

If you don’t already have a rotary line socket installed in your garden, check to see if the rotary washing line you’re looking at comes with one included. Sometimes this is the case, but not always. You’ll have to buy one separately if it doesn’t come with one. Again, make sure that the socket you get is the correct size for the rotary washing line.

When it comes to installing a rotary washing line socket, they can either be positioned directly into the soil or concreted in .

There are a few steps that will make it easier to install a ground socket directly into the soil :

• Soak the ground for several days before attempting to install the socket. The softer the ground is, the easier it will be.
• Use a spade to mark a deep X into the ground, with the central point being where the socket will be positioned.
• Place the socket in the middle of the X and cover it with a piece of wood to protect it. Use a mallet to encourage the socket into the ground.
• After every few hits with the mallet, put the washing line pole into the hole . Use this as a test of whether the socket it going in straight. Push on the pole until the socket is straight.
• Remove the pole and continue to use the mallet to get the socket into the ground.
• Repeat steps 4 – 5 until the socket is flush with the ground.

Alternatively, to fix a ground socket into concrete :

• Dig a hole approximately spade-width wide and as deep as your ground socket.
• Place the socket in the hole and pour in a bag of dry post concrete while holding the spike upright.
• Check that the socket is level with a spirit level, and add water to the concrete according to the instructions on the bag.
• Keep checking that the socket is level until the concrete is dry. Have a long piece of wood on hand in case you need to nudge the socket straight. It should take between five to ten minutes for the concrete to dry sufficiently.

Taking Care of Your Rotary Washing Line

Close and cover the rotary washing line when it’s not in use to keep it clean and dry. Some washing lines come with covers included, but if yours doesn’t you may want to look into buying one separately.

Ideally, you should put the whole rotary washing line away in very bad weather to protect it from strong winds.

Firstly, your rotary washing line may have a couple of height options, if you’ve been using it on the lowest level, pushing it up further will tighten the line. Alternatively, you can manually tighten the line:

• Start by setting the rotary washing line at a low position.
• Starting at the centre of the line, pull each section until it is reasonably tight. Do not overtighten otherwise you will not be able to close the drier.
• Once you pulled the line through on each section, and are happy with the tightness, you can put the rotary drier into the higher position.
• It is likely that the last section will have excess line. You should tie off and remove excess washing line at the end; however, before you do this, ensure that the rotary washing line will easily open and close.

Yes, it’s quite easy to restring a rotary washing line. You will need some patience and a couple of hours, but it is simple to do and requires no special tools.

• Measure all of the line in one section and multiply this number by three or four (depending on how many arms your washing line has). This will show hoe much line you need to buy. Add a little bit extra for threading and tying. Buy line of the same diameter as the previous line.
• Before removing the existing line, have a good look at how it is threaded and tied (taking a few pictures at this stage can be very helpful). Then, remove the old line.
• To restring the line, start at the middle. Thread the new cord in the same way as the old one and tie it off to finish. You can do this in two sections if necessary, tying off after the first section and then beginning again on the second half of the line if it makes it easier.

Before purchasing a rotary washing line, you need to consider the following:

The size of your garden/patio/yard: There is a rotary washing line to suit every outdoor (and even indoor) space. Choosing between wall-mounted, free-standing or the traditional style all depends on what that looks like.

Your budget: Depending on your needs, rotary washing lines can range from a tenner to £100+. As you might expect, the more expensive models tend to be made from better materials and are likely to last longer, but this might not matter as much to you if you think you might be moving house soon, for example.

Your weekly laundry cycle: How many loads you do over a week can influence the size of your rotary washing line. There is no point going for a three-arm that can manage one load at a time when realistically, you need a four-arm that can handle up to 4+.

Your affinity for DIY: Some require a lengthier installation process, so think carefully about whether you or someone in your household is up to the challenge.

How to Work Out What Size Rotary Washing Line You Need

Getting a rotary washing line to dry your laundry on is an excellent alternative to using a tumble dryer!

Unlike a tumble dryer, a washing line doesn’t use electricity as you get to make use of the sunlight and the wind, and clothes can last longer and feel better when they’re dried naturally.

But what rotary line do you need to buy? With a massive choice of washing lines on the market, it can be a tad confusing trying to choose what line you need for your home.

When choosing a line, you need to assess how much room you have outside, where you’re planning on putting the line, and how much laundry you wash.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to work out what size rotary washing line you need.

How to Pick the Right Size Rotary Washing Line

When deciding what rotary washing line to buy, there are a number of factors you need to keep in mind because they will directly influence what size line you’ll purchase.

The points you need to consider are:

How much space do you have available?

• Location of the rotary washing line.

How much washing do you do?

Let’s take a look at each of these points in more detail.

One of the main factors you must consider when getting a washing line is; do you have space in your garden for a rotary washing line?

A rotary washing line is typically placed into a solid socket that’s been fixed into the ground.

Once the line has been secured in place, the arms on the line lift up, and you can peg your clothes on the taut lines that run between the arms.

First and foremost, you need to find a suitable area where you can securely put the washing line’s socket into the ground. The socket will typically need to be cemented or screwed into place.

It’s possible to fit a washing line socket yourself, but depending on what type of ground you have in the garden it can be tricky. You’ll likely have to dig up some grass/move some slabs around and level the area, so you can put the ground socket safely into the ground.

You need to make sure that a socket can be fitted properly, otherwise the rotary line will be wonky and wobbly when you fit it into the socket. This, in turn, can put needless strain on the pole and can break the line in the long term.

Once you’ve decided where you’d like to put the line, you’ll then need to measure the available space in this area (the turning circle).

You must have enough space to accommodate your washing line when its arms are outstretched.

You need to be able to open the line up without it causing any damage to itself or to anything around it. There’s no point putting your rotary line next to a wall, for example!

Rotary washing lines when opened up can be rather cumbersome, and ideally, they need to have about two metres of space around them.

In some cases, you might need a bigger turning circle of three metres. But this figure does fluctuate between washing lines.

If you’ve not got a suitable spot to pop your ground socket in, or the line you’d like to buy would be too big, you need to consider getting a smaller one.

Or perhaps you should look into other washing lines that may be more suitable for your garden, like wall mounted lines, or a line that goes between two washing posts.

In addition to this, it’s also worth considering whether or not your laundry will have enough blowing room. You should have about an additional metre around your line for ‘blowing space’.

For example, if you were drying large sheets, you’d need space for the sheets to blow up and around. You wouldn’t want them getting tangled on a branch!

If your laundry can reach out and get caught on things as they blow in the wind, you might find that your line doesn’t rotate as it should, the laundry could get damaged, or in extreme circumstances, it could put unnecessary pressure on the line and break it.

Space is key! So, if you have to choose a smaller washing line to work within the space you have, do so. There’s no point buying an extra-large line, if you can’t use it effectively.

Location of the rotary washing line

As a follow on from the point above, you’ll need to think about where you get the most sun and best breeze in your garden. Wherever this is, is the ideal location to put your rotary line.

What you might come to realise is that the ‘best spot’ may not be a big one. So, you might have to purchase a smaller line that fits into the area, so you can make the most of the weather, and vice versa.

For example, if you get a lot of sun in one spot in the garden, but you haven’t got enough room for a large 60 metre rotary line, it would be better to get a smaller line. You could make the most out of sunlight by doing this. Plus, this would speed up your drying time considerably.

Another significant factor that you must consider is how much laundry you do.

If you don’t do a huge amount of washing per day, you may not need a very big washing line.

A rotary line with three arms and 30 metres of drying space would be ideal. The Brabantia 30 Metre 3 Arm Compact Rotary Washing Line would be suitable in this case.

On the other hand, if you’ve got a large family, say parents and two or three children, you might do more washing, and would need a bigger washing line.

Other Factors to Consider When Choosing a Rotary Washing Line

Of course, size is one major factor to think about when choosing a rotary washing line. However, there are a few other things you ought to consider before you commit to buying a line.

Can the rotary line fold down?

Most washing lines can be collapsed, so they become much smaller in size. This is particularly helpful if you need to pull the line down in bad weather, or if you want to remove the line from the ground and store it.

It’s not essential, but it is a beneficial feature to have.

Is the washing line’s height adjustable?

You can usually adjust the height of most rotary lines by pushing the centre piece upwards, or by turning the hand crank.

Ideally you should pick a washing line that is suitable for your height, and for what laundry you need to dry.

There’s no point buying a line that you can’t reach properly. Similarly, you need a line that’s tall enough (or can be adjusted), so your washing won’t drag along the floor.

Most washing lines will fit somewhere along this height scale: between 130 cm to 190 cm approx.

Can your rotary washing line grow with you?

If you take care of your washing line, there’s no reason why you’ll need to buy a new one regularly. So, it’s worth thinking about the future when you buy a rotary line.

If you’ve got ample room in your back garden, and in the future a relative might move in or your family may grow, it might be worth thinking about getting a line that could accommodate such big life changes. It could save you some money in the long run.

Do you get a cover with the washing line?

Although it’s not essential to cover your rotary washing line, popping a cover over your line can protect it from the elements. In turn, your line may stick around for longer!

Some rotary lines come with a cover as part of a deal, but in other cases you’ll have to buy one yourself. Just make sure you pick the right size cover.

How much does the rotary line cost?

Very basic rotary washing lines can cost as little as £20-£30 in some shops.

They’re generally not massive in size and they don’t usually come with any extras! But they’re normally solid enough, and if looked after well, they can last a long time.

On the other end of the scale, you can pay upwards of £100 for a rotary washing line!

These lines are usually bigger (more drying space), sturdier, come with better features like a handle to crank the line up and hanger hooks) and come with extras (cover/pegs), and in some cases, guarantees.

In addition to this, if you’re going to go with a well-known brand, like Brabantia or Vileda, you’re likely to pay more for the expertise and exceptional build quality of the lines.

Is there a special hoist mechanism on the rotary line?

An interesting feature to have on a rotary washing line is a crank feature.

This is where you have a little handle on the central pole, and you turn it to lift the arms of the washing line. It’s basically the same mechanism as you get on most outdoor umbrellas!

Of course, this isn’t an essential feature to have. But it can be quite handy if you find it difficult to push the centre of your line upwards to open the arms.

The handle feature is also helpful if you need to pop the line up and down quickly! There’s no fuss, you just turn the handle and you’re done.

For most people at home, this shouldn't be a problem. But some high-volume bars or restaurants might not be able to dedicate the time needed for proper care. This is one reason a business may prefer a tin-lined  or lacquered copper cup that may need less polishing, although they too should still be washed by hand.

5 Easy and Natural Ways to Remove Copper Tarnish

Owning a copper mug comes with the added responsibility of some occasional, simple maintenance. When your favorite mug starts to turn green, here are some easy solutions to restore its natural shine!

Lemon or Limes and Salt

This simple method is quick and easy, and ideal for bars or restaurants that may have an abundance of lemons on hand. Simply pour some table or sea salt onto a dish, and cut a fresh lemon or lime into 1/4th slices. Dip the fruit slice into the salt, and scrub the copper mug with slow, methodical circles inside and out. The change should be almost instantaneous, and when the tarnish has been removed, wash under warm or cool water, and dry thoroughly.

Vinegar and Salt

Mix one cup of vinegar, one tablespoon of salt, and five cups of water. Pour the solution into a saucepan, place your mug into the saucepan, and bring it to a boil. After a few minutes, the tarnish will have disappeared, and you can remove the mug with tongs, rinse it in cold water, and dry thoroughly with two soft dish towels.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Create a paste with three parts baking soda, and one part vinegar. Use a sponge to apply it to the mug with small circular motions and let it sit for about 10 minutes in order for the magic to happen. After that, simply rinse and dry until all moisture has been removed.

Harness the power of tomatoes to clean your tarnished copper mug! Apply the ketchup using a soft sponge or toothbrush, always rubbing in small circles. Then let it stand for 30 minutes. Remove the ketchup in the same way you applied it (a specially designated tarnish-toothbrush can be a highly effective tool for getting into those hard to reach places). Finally, rinse with water, and dry thoroughly with two soft towels.

Tamarind Paste

Tamarind is a tropical fruit, popular in Caribbean, African and Indian cuisine. It contains tartaric acid, which helps remove tarnish from brass and copper. If this is something you have access to, simply add water to create a paste, and rub it onto the copper with a soft sponge or cloth.  After a few minutes, rinse off the paste, and dry completely.

Metal Polish

Although the natural methods listed above are all equally effective, inexpensive and safe, another option is to use a tarnish remover or metal polish. Popular brands like Brasso are great for polishing many different kinds of metals, but the main ingredients may be less than desirable (rubbing alcohol, ammonia, mineral spirits and silica powder). Chances are you can easily find most of the ingredients for cleaning copper mugs in your pantry, and can avoid buying a product full of harsh chemicals.

Is It Safe To Drink From Copper Mugs?

Yes, it is safe to drink from copper mugs , despite click-bait headlines, myths and legislation that may suggest otherwise. True, when using 100% pure copper mugs it is possible that trace amounts of copper could be ingested. However, this can be mitigated by using stainless-steel plated copper mugs.

Copper is an essential part of human biology, and is necessary for regulating metabolic systems and vital organs. Copper deficiency can lead to arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and colon cancer.

Not only do our bodies need copper, we also have systems in place to naturally deal with any excess copper. Verified scientific studies have shown copper can do impressive things.

• Copper and Iron work together to form red blood cells.
• Copper helps maintain collagen, and along with other antioxidants, can reduce signs of aging.
• Copper helps absorb excess iron in the liver.
• Copper improves brain and nerve cell synaptic responses.
• Copper aids in digestion and helps with ulcers and inflammation.

Copper toxicity is quite rare and, according to the World Health Organization , "There is a greater risk of health effects from a deficiency of copper intake than excessive copper intake."

The FDA guidelines do not recommend using copper for any food or beverage purposes, solely because of the extra care needed to maintain it, and applies exclusively to commercial operations, with varying local and state regulations.

This is meant to protect consumers from improperly cleaned or exposed copper mugs and cookware in bars and restaurants, and does not apply to home use. The FDA suggests the public learn about proper care and maintenance before using copper mugs, but scientists have debunked the claim that a Moscow Mule can give you copper poisoning.

When using 100% pure copper mugs and a liquid with a pH below 6.0 (like lime juice), and that liquid remains in the mug for an extended period of time, there is a chance you could consume amounts of copper. This is the reason why it is generally a good idea to use copper mugs lined with stainless-steel .

No, never! All copper cookware, utensils or mugs should be washed by hand, no exceptions. Dishwashers typically use harsh detergent, powerful water sprays and high heat that can seriously harm your copper mug both inside and out.

Dishwashers can lead to dents, tarnishing, and flaking or cracking. So take 30 seconds to do right by your copper mugs, and wash and dry them by hand!
