Wally's wife in organised trip (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

' wally's ' is the definition. (both can mean a stupid person) ' wife in organised trip ' is the wordplay. ' wife ' becomes ' w ' (abbreviation) . ' in ' means one lot of letters goes inside another. ' organised ' indicates anagramming the letters. ' trip ' is an anagram of ' tirp '. ' w ' put within ' tirp ' is ' TWIRP '.

(Another definition for twirp that I've seen is " Idiot".)

The Sounds of Music

Mike Ellison’s debut puzzle brings music back into the house — lots of it!

Seven women, wearing old-fashioned bathing costumes and covers that resemble skirts made of seaweed, pose on a beach in front of rocks and the ocean.

By Caitlin Lovinger

Jump to: Tricky Clues | Today’s Theme

SUNDAY PUZZLE — In his print introduction to this grid, Joel Fagliano writes: “Mike Ellison, of Henderson, Nev., works in business analytics. Before that, he majored in music education and served as a band director, hence the theme you see here. This puzzle has a rare double revealer, found at 42- and 52-Down, which cleverly sums up the wordplay.”

Even though this puzzle wears its theme on its sleeve (if you see its title before beginning, anyway), it vibrates with a chorus of musical references that make solving it a delight. The fill is like a mash-up between “Name That Tune” and a crossword, and you’re bound to find a reference or two that will get you humming.

Today’s Theme

Depending on where you solve the puzzle, your first glance might elicit a melodic response, or it might not. There are eight gray stacks of two letter boxes in the blank grid; if you’re looking at the puzzle on paper or on your computer — but not on the puzzle app — there’s also a title above the grid: The Sounds of Music. Eight two-letter beats? That was enough for me to think of “a deer, a female deer ”; this turned out to be a helpful hunch, but not nearly enough to make solving this pretty theme less interesting.

Those two-letter runs do turn out to be the notes of a scale, as you will find as you work your way through the down entries that contain them. At 18-Down, for example, the “Pioneer in electricity” is Nikola TES LA ; at 85-Down, a “Science exhibition” is a FA IR. The topmost set of squares, which appear at 5-Down, match the bottom set of squares, at 115-Down: A DO RING FANS and AL DO , for the DOs at each end of the eight-note run.

These little letter pairs do something special in the Across entries, though! You might have noticed this early in your solve; I didn’t until I had most of the notes filled out. 19-, 24-, 28-, 57-, 82-, 111-, 116- and 123-Across all end in the first of the gray boxes of each note; these entries take one extra step to solve, and it’s going down. For example, at 24-Across, “One of a trio of famous tenors” is PAVAROT TI . Notice that the entry is one letter too long; to complete it, you have to take a little trip south through 12-Down, where TI appears. At 123-Across, “Musical slide,” the answer is GLISSAN DO , whose final letters overlap with DO in 115-Down, AL DO .

The two revealer entries, at 42- and 52-Down, make neat bookends for this theme. The first, “Cut back … or an alternative title for this puzzle?” is SCALE DOWN, and the second, “Autumn colors … or an alternative title for this puzzle?” is FALL TONES.

Another noteworthy feature of the Across entries that use the theme notes is that they are all musical references. I was up on most of them, although 57-Across, the “1988 No. 1 country hit for Randy Travis” was new to me — it’s I TOLD YOU SO . My favorite was 111-Across, the “Classic tune inspiring a joke about eels,” which is Dean Martin’s “THATS AMO RE .”

Tricky Clues

56A. I never knew this facet of American history. The “_____ Colonies, communal society that went on to form an appliance company,” is AMANA, a wageless, craft-oriented society that grew into seven villages in Iowa that still exist today .

87A. The musicality from the theme spills over into the puzzle’s fill, with loads of references to instruments, songs, genres and performers. I think most of the trivia are pretty accessible. Some clues were stumpers for me, many were really nostalgic and fun, and a few were both. Like this one: Even under pressure, I would never have known that “Robert Matthew Van ______, real name of rap’s Vanilla Ice,” is WINKLE.

33D. “Suspicious, informally,” solves to a debut entry to the Times Crossword, though it’s old slang : HINKY.

47D. This is theatrical wordplay, although its subject isn’t a musician. “Whose performances were as astonishing as all get-out?” refers to Harry HOUDINI; his ability to get out of various jams was his claim to fame as an escape artist.

72D. “Like musical mixes that overly emphasize bass notes” solves to a term that’s new to me, but deducible: BOTTOM HEAVY.

Constructor Notes

This is my debut New York Times puzzle. I grew up in the Midwest and currently reside in the Las Vegas area. My field is business intelligence (Joel and I settled on “business analytics” for something maybe more people could grasp), but my degree is in music education and I began my career as a band director. I have two good friends (shout out to Scott and Lynn) who challenged me to make a music-themed puzzle, and this was the result. I had seen the words “fall tones” in a headline about fashion, and “tones that are falling” as the hook for the puzzle stuck in my head. It took a while to get the hook to work, and I’m glad it came together. My mom was the crossword puzzler in our family. She passed away in 2019, and I began solving puzzles shortly after that (perhaps thinking of her?). But, and I realize this will sound geeky, I got more interested in building an engine to fill grids. I have a background in software development, and the challenge of building a fill engine was very interesting to me. Once I had an engine built, I started designing crosswords to test it, and that’s how I began with crossword construction.
