The Ultimate Guide to visiting the London Zoo

The london zoo ultimate guide.

Not many places in the world can boast being home to lions, penguins and Komodo dragons. There’s also not many places in the world where you can be a zoo keeper for the day, and get tips and advice on how to feed various animals from all over the world. That’s why a visit to the London Zoo is a must for any tourist (or even a local!) in London.

The ZSL London Zoo is the world’s oldest scientific zoo (under the Zoological Society of London) as it has been open since 1828, and houses one of the largest animal collections in the UK with over 756 different species living inside its walls.

Highlights The London Zoo

The zoo is split up into different sections such as the African Bird Safari, Fruit Bat Forest, the Butterfly Paradise, and the Reptile House, so there’s no telling what type of animal species you’ll come across during your visit to the London Zoo.

If you’re interested in learning more about marine life, the London Zoo’s aquarium is home to angelfish, stingrays, seahorses and even piranhas, while the Reptile House is home to the likes of crocodiles, rattlesnakes, chameleons and even poison dart frogs!

If you want to learn more about exotic-type animal species, there’s a Land of the Lions exhibition, as well as other sections like The Tiger Territory, The Gorilla Kingdom and Into Africa, which houses zebras, hippos, and even a high-viewing platform so you can see the giraffes face-to-face. If you’re not bothered by the creepy-crawlies, there’s an entire exhibition dedicated to different types of insects and bugs, such as black widow spiders, cave crickets, leafcutter ants and much more.

There’s also Australian-themed exhibits, indoor Rainforest exhibits, and a new Penguin Beach exhibit which contains England’s biggest penguin pool – make sure to keep your eye out for the single, male rock-hopper penguin named Ricky!

Children will especially enjoy the Animal Adventure section, which is a petting zoo area that includes sheep, donkeys, children and pigs, just to name a few.

Special Tips

Getting there.

trips to london zoo

Visiting The London Zoo

Recommended visiting time for the London Zoo is around two to three hours, depending on how many animals or exhibits you hope to see. It’s highly recommended that you arrive more than a few hours before last entry so you’re not rushed during your visit.

There are several scheduled events throughout the day depending on what time of the year you visit the zoo. There are daily bird feedings at 11:15 a.m., a Tigers Live! Event and an otter feeding at 12 p.m., and Penguin Beach Live! Shows At three different selected times during the day. Before you visit make sure you check out the London Zoo’s official website for scheduled events and feeding times.

There is also a cafe where you can buy food and drinks during your visit; however the costs can be quite pricey so it may be a good idea to have breakfast or lunch elsewhere before visiting the zoo.

Visitors to get first glimpse of one of the world’s largest frogs at London Zoo

G iant salamanders, one of the world’s largest frogs and turtles with heads too big for their shells are among the creatures with a new home at London Zoo.

The new “secret life of reptiles and amphibians” exhibit opens to the public on March 29, housing more than 30 species, including critically endangered wildlife and some which are highly unusual and distinct from any other animals.

It replaces the old reptile house at London Zoo, and hosts some of the world’s stranger and lesser known creatures, supporting their conservation, captive breeding programmes and research that could help wildlife in the wild, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) said.

For the first time, visitors will be able to see the zoo’s group of mountain chicken frogs, which were airlifted to safety from their Caribbean home in 2009 in a last-ditch bid to save the species from extinction due to a killer fungus.

They are kept in a biosecure unit to protect them from disease, with sterilised soil and plants dipped in dilute bleach solution, before being placed in the enclosure and staff changing their clothes before working with them.

Also among the residents of the exhibit are two Chinese giant salamanders, the world’s largest amphibians, which were rescued from being smuggled in a cereal box in 2016, before coming to live in the zoo.

It is hoped the critically endangered animals will breed – if, as the keepers think likely, they are a male and female.

Some 16 of the creatures in the exhibit are “Edge” species – which means they have few evolutionary relatives and are often extremely unusual in their genetic make-up and the way they look, live and behave.

They include the crocodile lizard, which has no more that 1,000 individuals in the wild in southern China and northern Vietnam, and the big-headed turtle, which has a large head it cannot retract into its shell.

Four adult big-headed turtles came to the zoo in 2018, having been confiscated after being smuggled in Canada, and seven youngsters were born in 2021, making London Zoo the first European zoo to breed them.

Amphibian and reptile species are threatened by habitat loss and being caught for meat and the pet trade, while amphibians in particular are at risk from disease such as chytrid fungus which all but wiped out mountain chicken frogs.

The team at ZSL say having animals in their care means they are able to research and learn about their lives and behaviour in ways that can help their survival in the wild.

For example, they are carrying out analysis of their Ethiopian mountain adders to see if the patterns on the snakes are stable, and if so could be used as identifiers of individual snakes which would support monitoring and conservation in the wild.

The secret life of reptiles and amphibians building has been designed to meet the needs of each of its 33 species, with different climate controlled zones, and staff checking temperatures, water quality and humidity on a daily basis.

It also gives visitors a glimpse into some of the behind-the-scenes breeding and animal care areas.

Dr Ben Tapley, curator of the exhibit, said they had developed a facility that could provide for threatened species and improve breeding success.

He added: “It is showcasing things that are completely different from ourselves and making people see species in a new light.

“All of these animals are quirky, they’re weird-looking, they’re completely different from anything else, and each one of them has a unique story.”

He said the survival of some species such as the mountain chicken frog is dependent on the captive populations.

Very little is known about other species, and by having them in the zoo’s care, staff could address knowledge gaps that would help with their conservation.

Dr Tapley said it was easy to get funding for large charismatic animals, but they were not always the most threatened.

In the creatures in the new exhibit, the zoo had “excellent ambassadors” for raising awareness and support for highly threatened reptiles and amphibians, he said.

“I hope by telling the stories of some of these lesser known animals, we can get greater support for their conservation,” he said.

Breed to lead a 30-person delegation to China. Will she meet with Xi Jinping?

A woman speaks at a podium outdoors, microphones in front, gesturing mid-speech.

  • Copy link to this article

Facing a tough reelection battle, Mayor London Breed is flying to China this Saturday with a 30-person delegation and kicking off a weeklong diplomatic trip to strengthen the city’s international image and promote local tourism.

The trip, which includes stops in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai, is built on the momentum from last year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco. China’s President Xi Jinping met with Breed, President Joe Biden and other U.S. leaders during the event.

About 30 people, including City Administrator Carmen Chu, Chamber of Commerce CEO Rodney Fong, Bay Area Council COO John Grubb and several business and Chinese American community leaders, will join Breed on the trip.

“It's going to be a great trip,” Breed said at a press conference Wednesday morning. “To receive an invitation to come to China to talk about these opportunities is critically important to the long-term success of San Francisco.”

The Mayor’s Office said that Xi and Chinese ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng, formally invited her—but whether she will meet with Xi during her upcoming trip remains a question mark.

“I'm not certain right now,” Breed told The Standard Wednesday morning. “But as soon as I find out, you'll be the first to know.”

Breed will be meeting with multiple Chinese airlines to help promote direct flights to San Francisco as well as business leaders and the mayor of Shanghai to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the sister-city relation. She will be back April 21.

Will a China trip help Breed’s reelection?

The China trip comes as Breed faces a tough reelection fight, with candidates aggressively courting Chinese voters' support . Breed’s main mayoral opponents are Board President Aaron Peskin, former interim Mayor Mark Farrell, Supervisor Ahsha Safaí and nonprofit founder Daniel Lurie.

Breed’s visit to China may help shore up her lagging support in the city’s Asian American community, as many Chinese community leaders and activists are joining her. Local Chinese immigrants who frequently visit their motherland may also see Breed’s visit as a friendly move.

Bill Lee, a former city administrator, said he was invited on the trip but can’t make it because of family reasons. He said he has been to China with multiple former mayors, and said Breed should take this China trip as an opportunity to boost her image on a bigger political stage.

“This will help her reelection,” Lee said, pointing out the potential to establish new economic opportunities and the long history of ties between the local Chinese community and China. “This is an excellent trip for London Breed.”

The trip has another possible purpose: Breed has been vocal about getting a panda for the San Francisco Zoo from China, sending two letters promoting the city as a home for the beloved animals. She is expected to bring up the topic again with top Beijing officials during the trip and hinting some good news are pending.

“I am very hopeful,” Breed said. “But ultimately, we want to make sure that we are given the green light [from Beijing], so we can move forward.”

A woman is speaking at a podium with microphones from various news outlets. She wears a peach blazer and has a multicolored top.

Lee added that it would be a “major accomplishment” for Breed if she can successfully bring back pandas from China.

Kevin Chan, the owner of Chinatown's popular fortune cookie store, will join Breed’s delegation. He said it’s important for Breed to deepen the connections between San Francisco and China for economic and cultural exchange.

“No matter if it’s election year or not, she needs to visit China,” Chan said. “There are so many Chinese immigrants here. It will help boost her polling, I think.”

Chan praised Breed’s hard work on getting a panda and said he hopes the effort will pay back with some positive news soon.

The zoo is expected to start a massive fundraising campaign to help build the panda habitat, which may be completed in 2025.

Jaynry Mak, the president of Chinatown’s Portsmouth Plaza Parking Corporation and the board president of the Community Youth Center, is among those accompanying Breed on the trip. She’s flying into Hong Kong a couple days earlier before joining the mayor, and her big goal for the trip is to help promote San Francisco—by getting some good news about pandas.

“I believe pandas will revitalize San Francisco,” Mak said. “I am happy to support the mayor’s effort working on the pandas.”

Dennis Wu, a longtime community leader who was invited to the trip, said he couldn’t go for health reasons.

Wu is expecting Breed’s trip to be a great boost for San Francisco tourism but said he was unsure whether it will help her win more Asian voters.

“A trip to China wouldn’t hurt, but the election is still seven months away,” Wu said. “Regardless of what the candidates are doing, at least Chinese voters are getting attention now.”
