Travel between Chennai and Bengaluru in 2 hours using new expressway by January next year: Nitin Gadkari

Meanwhile, the government of India has also proposed a Bengaluru–Mangalore Greenfield Expressway and Mangaluru–Chennai Expressway through Bengaluru.

bangalore chennai expressway travel time

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari Thursday announced that the travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai will be cut short to just two hours after inauguration of the new Greenfield Expressway in January 2024. Gadkari was speaking at the 75th anniversary programme of Ashok Leyland in Chennai.

The Bengaluru- Chennai expressway is one of the 36 Greenfield Expressways for which works are underway in India. “In the month of January next year, we will start the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway where the duration of traveling between the two cities will be two hours only. You can then launch luxury buses and electric sleeper coach buses and give a similar experience as that of business class. Since it is electric, you can also reduce the ticket rate by 30%,” said Gadkari. Earlier the estimated time of completing the project was March 2024.

The ‘new alignment’ project will connect Hoskote (in Bengaluru) to Sriperumbudur in the Kanchipuram district (40 km from Chennai). The expressway is one of the 36 new Green Expressways of NHAI of which the foundation was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2022. The 262 km-long Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway will be built at a cost of over Rs17,930 crore and will pass-through states of Karnataka , Andhra Pradesh , and Tamil Nadu . The 262 km highway will be eight-lane for a distance of 240 km, with the remainder being an elevated stretch of 22 km. A total land of 2650 hectares of land was also acquired for the project.

The works are underway in three phases, with the first phase covering a distance of 62.6km between Hoskote and Bethamangala in Karnataka. The second phase will cover a stretch of 85km, from Bethamangala to Gudipala in Andhra Pradesh. The third phase consists of 106km, connecting Gudipala to Sriperumbuddur in Tamil Nadu.

Festive offer

Gadkari called upon automotive industries in India to produce methanol trucks, as an alternative fuel model. “In order to curb pollution, it is important that we adopt alternative fuel options. Recently, on pilot basis, we implemented Ashok Leyland buses in Bengaluru which are run by 15% methanol blend. We can make methanol from low quality coal. My dream is to start methanol trucks and buses in the country by which we can reduce the dependence on the import of diesel,” said Gadkari.

Table of Contents

Bangalore-Chennai expressway: Foundation-laying ceremony

Being built under the Bharatmala Pariyojana , the expressway is one of the 26 new expressways that the government is building to boost India’s connectivity net. The project was conceived in 2011 and the foundation for the Bangalore-Chennai expressway was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2022.

Estimated cost and travel time

To be developed at an estimated Rs 17,000 crore, the expressway would considerably cut the travel time between the two cities. “The travel time between Chennai and Bangalore would be reduced to two-and-half hours with all the safety features once the expressway is ready,” road transport minister, Nitin Gadkari said in February 2021.

“At present, travel time taken between Bangalore and Chennai is around 5 hours. Once the expressway opens, the travel time will get reduced to 2.15 hours. The distance between two destinations is 300 km and with the implementation of the new road project, travel distance gets reduced to 262 km,” the minister said.

Expressway makeup

Also named the National Expressway 7 (NE-7), it will cover 262 km, passing through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The starting point of the Bangalore-Chennai expressway would be Hoskote in Bangalore and will end at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram district. The expressway will pass through Malur, Bangarpet, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Palamaner, Chittoor and Ranipet.

Features of Bangalore-Chennai Expressway

Constructed on a build-operate-transfer basis, the four-lane, double-decker elevated road expressway will include 8 major bridges, 103 minor bridges and 17 flyovers. Part of the overall makeup would be four spur roads, diverting at Dabaspet (Karnataka), Konadaspura (Karnataka), Kolar Gold Fields (Karnataka) and Katpadi (Tamil Nadu).

The expressway will be connected with the proposed Bangalore Ring Road.

Completion timeline

A part of the centre’s flagship Gati Shakti scheme, the Bangalore-Chennai expressway has been accorded special priority status by Prime Minister Modi and Gadkari under the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor (CBIC). To be built in three phases and 10 packages, the access-controlled, signal-free, elevated expressway, for which about 98% of land was available, is  slated to be completed by December 2024.

Bangalore-Chennai expressway route map

The expressway will pass through the following cities:

  • Hoskote (Karnataka)
  • Malur (Karnataka)
  • V Kota (Andhra Pradesh)
  • Palamaner ( Andhra Pradesh )
  • Gudiyatham (Tamil Nadu)
  • Arakkonam (Tamil Nadu)
  • Sriperumbudur (Tamil Nadu)

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway:  Impact on real estate

Expected to cater to 45,000 to 60,000 passenger car units per day, the upcoming project has started impacting commercial real estate in the three states, especially boosting the prospects for an automobile hub in Sriperumbudur.

“Implementation of the project would result in the development of basic infrastructure, industrial development and better connectivity between Bengaluru and Chennai, which would result in the overall economic development of the region,” the road ministry said in an official statement.

“The project will increase economic activity in the region by opening up new areas for industrial development. There is potential for manufacturing facilities and warehousing facilities along the corridor. Also, the project will be closer to the port and will facilitate easy cargo movement on the corridor,” CREDAI Tamil Nadu state president, Suresh Krishna, told The Hindu .

Gadkari, who took to Twitter, said on january 6, 2023, that the project was cost-efficient for vehicle operators and lessens fuel consumption. “It will strengthen the economic activities in Bangalore and Chennai and also connect industrial hubs in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh to the Chennai Port,” he said.

A few months ago, the government issued guidelines for signages on expressways and national highways to enhance the safety of commuters.

The fresh guidelines, approved by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari , focus on further improving road safety by incorporating best practices and global standards to offer improved visibility and intuitive guidance to drivers, the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said in a statement.

"MoRTH has reviewed the provision of signages as per relevant IRC (Indian Road Congress) codes and guidelines, existing practices prescribed in various international codes as well as information and functionality perspective to ensure better compliance of traffic regulations," it said.

The guidelines are designed to offer drivers clear and concise guidance, warnings, notices and regulatory information, facilitating a seamless and safe journey, the ministry noted.

Some of the salient features of the guidelines include prioritising enhanced visibility of road signages through placement at appropriate height/distance, large lettering, symbols and short legends for quick comprehension of drivers, ensuring crucial information is readily visible and understandable, even in adverse conditions.

Pictorial representations will be accompanied by text to convey essential messages effectively, thus catering to a diverse group of road users, including those with limited literacy, the statement said.

A multilingual approach will be employed on the signages -- in English and regional languages -- to ensure effective communication with diverse road users.

Bengaluru-Chennai expressway will reduce travel time to two hours: Nitin Gadkari

In his speech at rajya sabha on wednesday, the minister had mentioned the much-awaited bengaluru-chennai expressway..

The new expressway between Bengaluru and Chennai will reduce the travel time between the two cities to two hours, said Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari. In his speech at Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, the minister had mentioned the much-awaited Bengaluru-Chennai expressway.

Currently, the average commute time between Chennai and Bengaluru by road is five to six hours and the new expressway is expected to bring it down to two to three hours (HT FILE PHOTO)

The minister said, “India will have 26 new green expressways in the next three years and this will reduce the travel time for people choosing roadways. The Bengaluru-Chennai expressway is one of them and it is going to help commuters to reach their cities (Chennai or Bengaluru) in just two hours. I would like to reiterate that our roads are going to be no less than the roads of America in the future.”

Earlier in May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also mentioned in his speech about the Chennai-Bengaluru expressway. “The Bengaluru-Chennai expressway will connect two key centres of growth. The four-lane elevated road connecting Chennai port to Maduravoyal will make Chennai Port more efficient and decongest the city traffic,” Modi had said.

Currently, the average commute time between Chennai and Bengaluru by road is five to six hours and the new expressway is expected to bring it down to two to three hours. Modi had laid the foundation for the 258 km long expressway in May. The expressway is going to pass through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Besides, the 117-kilometre-long Bengaluru-Mysuru highway is also under construction and this is expected to be completed by October.

How Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway will reduce travel time, benefit 3 states

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Chennai today (May 26) to dedicate to the nation and lay the foundation stone for 11 infrastructure projects worth over ₹31,500 crore.

These projects are a step towards boosting infrastructure development, enhancing connectivity, and giving an impetus to ease of living in the region and will also help significantly improve socio-economic prosperity in the region, have a transformative impact on several sectors and also help create employment opportunities, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

He will dedicate to the nation five projects worth over ₹2,960 crore, and will also lay the foundation stone for six projects being built at a cost of over ₹28,540 crore.

One of the projects for which the PM will lay the foundation stone is the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway (BCE).

BCE to pass through 3 states

The 262 km long Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway will be built at a cost of over ₹14,870 crore.

It will pass through three states – Karnataka (71 km), Andhra Pradesh (85 km) and Tamil Nadu (106 km) and help reduce the travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai. This expressway is being developed as a part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana.

This access-controlled greenfield highway will not only improve connectivity between the two cities, it will also greatly enable the economic prosperity of the region.

The expressway is divided into 10 packages – three each in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and the remaining six in Tamil Nadu. In April, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said 45 km is in the implementation stage.

This project was identified as one of the priority projects under the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor (CBIC). It will provide connectivity to the proposed Multimodal Logistic Park at Dobbaspet which can be accessed through NH 207 or Bangalore Ring Road from BCE.

The new four-lane wide expressway between Bengaluru and Chennai will not only reduce the travel time but will also reduce fuel costs, and improve economic activities in the three states.

Suresh Krishna, State President, CREDAI Tamil Nadu, told The Hindu , “The project will also increase economic activity in the region by opening up new areas for industrial development. There is potential for manufacturing facilities, warehousing facilities along the corridor. Also, the project will be closer to the port and will facilitate easy cargo movement on the corridor.”

“This project shall facilitate better connectivity between Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu States. Implementation of the project would result in development of basic infrastructure, industrial development and better connectivity between Bengaluru and Chennai, which would result in the overall economic development of the region,” the MoRTH said.

Those using this expressway have to pay toll fees. However, they will have a smooth and safe journey without worrying about pedestrians, cattle, or junctions. On this highway, one can drive at high speeds of 120 km per hour.

This expressway is expected to be ready by March 2024, and the travel time between the two cities of Bengaluru and Chennai is expected to be under three hours.

“The travel time between Chennai and Bengaluru would be reduced to two-and-half hours with all the safety features once the expressway is ready,” Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari had said in February 2021.

The Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway starts from Hoskote (NH 4) near Bengaluru and ends at Sriperumbudur, about 40km from Chennai. The highway passes through Kolar (Karnataka), Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh), and Kancheepuram (Tamil Nadu).

Current connectivity

There are two existing roads connecting Bengaluru and Chennai, one (about 340 km) is via Hoskote, near Bangalore to via Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, then to Chennai and the second (about 360 km) is via Electronic City (Bangalore) to Hosur, Krishnagiri (Tamil Nadu) and then to Chennai. The alignment of the proposed expressway is passing in between these two stretches.

At present, the most used road between the two cities is via NH 44 and NH 48, through Hosur, Krishnagiri, and Vellore.

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway: Route

The upcoming Chennai Bangalore Expressway , connecting Bangalore to Chennai, is set to become the most direct route between the two cities. Currently, travelers have three alternate routes available: Hosur and Krishnagiri via the Golden Quadrilateral, Old Madras Road, and Kolar-KGF-V Kota and Vellore . Among these options, the Golden Quadrilateral spanning approximately 380 km is the most commonly chosen route. However, with the completion of the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway, the distance between these cities will be significantly reduced to lot of km, resulting in smoother and more efficient travel.

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway: Route map

The expressway will go through the below-mentioned cities and States-

  • Hoskote, Karnataka
  • Malur, Karnataka
  • Venkatagirikota, Andhra Pradesh
  • Palamaner, Andhra Pradesh
  • Gudiyatham, Tamil Nadu
  • Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu
  • Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu

The Bangalore-Chennai Expressway project is set to transform the connectivity between these two major cities in South India. Currently, there are three routes available for travel between Bangalore and Chennai: Hosur and Krishnagiri, Old Madras Road, and Kolar-KGF-Venkatagirikota and Vellore. These routes are connected by NH-48 and NH-75. Among these options, the most popular route is the Hosur and Krishnagiri path, which is also known as the Golden Quadrilateral.

However, with the construction of the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway, commuters can expect improved travel experiences and reduced travel times between the two cities. The expressway will provide a more direct and efficient route, offering enhanced connectivity and convenience for both commercial and residential purposes. It is an eagerly anticipated project that is expected to have a significant impact on the real estate market and overall development in the region.

The Bangalore-Chennai Expressway: Spur Routes

Spur routes, also known as branch-like roads, play a vital role in connecting various regions to a primary highway or expressway. In the case of the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway, there are four planned spur routes, out of which three have received approval. These spur routes will enhance connectivity and provide convenient access to specific areas along the expressway. Let's explore the details of these approved spur routes:

These spur routes are designed to complement the main expressway, creating a comprehensive network that improves accessibility and promotes regional development. The addition of these spurs will not only benefit commuters but also have a positive impact on the real estate market, tourism, and other industries in the areas they connect.

The development of spur routes within the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway project demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure development, aiming to maximize connectivity and unlock the economic potential of the region.

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway: Phases

The development of the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway has been carefully planned and executed in several phases, which are as follows:

Phase 1: Karnataka

Distance covered: 71 km

Phase 2: Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

Distance covered: 85 km

Phase 3: Tamil Nadu

Distance covered: 106.1 km

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway: Cost and travel time

The upcoming Bangalore-Chennai Expressway is owned by the National Highway Authority of India. The project carries an estimated cost of Rs 18,000 crore, with approximately Rs 5,700 crore allocated specifically for the construction of the expressway. The remaining funds will be utilized for land acquisition, project administration, and implementing toll gate mechanisms.

Once completed, the expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Chennai and Bangalore. Currently, the journey between the two cities takes approximately 5 hours. However, upon the expressway's inauguration, this travel time is projected to be reduced to just two and a half hours, effectively halving the current duration.

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway: Toll charges

The Bangalore-Chennai Expressway is currently under construction, and the toll charges for the completed expressway have not yet been finalized. However, here are the proposed toll rates based on vehicle types:

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway: Completion Timeline

The Bangalore-Chennai Expressway holds significance as a key component of the Gati Shakti scheme, a flagship program initiated by the central government. This expressway is planned to be constructed in three phases and divided into ten packages. The design of the expressway focuses on creating an access-controlled, greenfield, signal-free, and elevated road system. The target for its operational readiness is set for March 2024.

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway: Impact on real estate

The Bangalore-Chennai Expressway is a significant infrastructure project that aims to connect the thriving real estate markets of Bangalore and Chennai in South India. Bangalore, known as an IT hub, attracts professionals from all over the country, while Chennai has plans to develop the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC) as a manufacturing hub, attracting major automobile giants like Bajaj, Nissan, and Mahindra to establish their plants along the route.

The existing routes between Bangalore and Chennai already witness a significant volume of traffic, with over 9,500 Passenger Car Units (PCU) estimated to travel on them. With planned developments in micro-markets such as Ranipet, Chittoor, and Kanchipuram, among others, the traffic movement is expected to increase manifold. Consequently, the areas along the Bangalore-Chennai expressway hold immense industrial and commercial potential.

As is customary with such developments, residential areas tend to emerge in proximity to commercial units, leading the developer community to be optimistic about the prospects of the real estate market. Ashish R Puravankara, the Managing Director of Puravankara Ltd, expresses his belief in the expressway's impact, stating, " The upcoming Bangalore-Chennai Expressway will open up real estate opportunities alongside the corridor and give rise to both commercial and residential activities."

Currently, property prices in the areas neighboring the expressway, such as Hoskote and Tambaram, are relatively affordable, with prices ranging from Rs 3,700 to 5,000 per square foot. However, it is expected that these prices will experience a steep increase once the project is completed. Over the past five years, these prices have already witnessed a growth of over five percent.

The Bangalore-Chennai Expressway, which is part of the 26 new green expressways announced by the Central Government, will not only enhance connectivity but also act as a catalyst for industrial and residential growth in the surrounding areas.

Bangalore-Chennai Expressway: Recent Developments

The Bangalore-Chennai Expressway's second phase has obtained approval from the wildlife board, ensuring that the designated area will be solely utilized for the construction of the expressway and not for commercial purposes. The diversion work will be supervised by the Forest Department.

As one of the largest ongoing infrastructure projects in South India, the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway will span 262 kilometers as a four-lane highway, serving as a high-speed corridor that traverses three states. Once completed, the expressway is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time between the two capital cities, bringing it down to approximately 2.5 hours.
