Outstanding show.

one cannot expect the amount of energy a small guy can make, nor the presence he gives on stage.

It is already an excellent concept, one guy in a jump suit and a helmet playing the blues in a very unique, peculiar, high tempo manner.

We saw him in a small club which makes it even more difficult sometimes to 'convince' people if you're right under their nose like he was.

He took over our enthusiasm and attention, fully and utterly as soon as he walked close to the stage.

Funny, witty, engaging, extremely likeable persona and excellent performer.

If this guy comes to your town, make sure you don't miss it - you sure aint gonna see anything like it ever!

I love all of Bob Log's shows. You never know what will happen in his shows but one thing you can count on is the excitement you will feel. The experience is very interactive, so it's never a boring or stale show. Can't wait for the next one!

Great show. Bob Log III is very original and a real artist. He was true to form playing his delta blues trash party tunes.

Unfortunately because the stage was only 50cm off the floor and he plays sitting couldn't see him very well.

About bob log iii.

Tucson, AZ-based blues-punk primitive Bob Log III first surfaced a member of the art-noise group Mondo Guano, later serving as one half of the duo Doo Rag. While appearing in support of Ween, Doo Rag percussionist Thermos Malling abruptly quit the tour, leaving Log to finish out the remaining dates as a solo act; wearing his now-trademark motorcycle helmet onstage for protection from crowds, he proceeded to hone a cacophonous, Delta blues-inspired noise distinguished by Latin-styled drum machine beats and vocals processed through telephone microphones. In the summer of 1998, Log signed to Fat Possum to issue his solo debut, School Bus; Trike, the second release in his ongoing "Vehicle Series, " followed a year later. ~ Jason Ankeny

Bob Log III

Bob Log III is a one-man-band slide guitar party. A perverse product of the Arizona desert, Bob Log III has been diligently traveling the globe since 1996, showcasing his incomparable talents and developing a devoted following along the way. A whirlwind of dexterous limbs and digits, this superstar sonic showman has to be seen to be believed.

Clad in his cannonball man, extra tight jumpsuit, and signature motorcycle helmet with telephone/microphone attached, Bob Log III unfailingly sweats up a river while kicking on a kick drum, stomping his homemade foot cymbal, and playing slide on an old archtop guitar. His endless pursuit for musical mayhem and a downright party has seen his unique talents utilized for children’s birthday parties, obscure beer barns, mammoth music festivals, and everything in between.

Yet, beyond these mesmerizing visuals, lies the true reason for Bob Log’s international cult status and superhero adoration. It is quite simply the guitar playing - finger-picked lightning, sliding up and down, stopping when it wants to, then starting again when it feels like it, all in a way that makes people move uncontrollably, smile and reel.

"And then there’s this guy named Bob Log, you ever heard of him? He’s this little kid — nobody even knows how old he is — wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can’t see his face, and plays slide guitar. It’s just the loudest strangest stuff you’ve ever heard. You don’t understand one word he’s saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That’s what I aspire to basically.” Tom Waits

BOB LOG III (Live Review) – All Rise

bob log 3 tour

Bob Log iii, That long fingered son of Tucson, brought a little something extra to The Lexington  this easter and we all shared in the holy experience…

Three men, two guitars, a saxophone and two impressively complicated and detailed electronic soundboards take their places on the stage of The Lexington to create their very own kind of musical wizardry – this is The Jonny Halifax Invocation.

Jonny Halifax does have a fabulous sound hole and he plays a homemade guitar with no sound hole"

The three musicians appear to be warming up, practising chords and tapping rhythms while seemingly random notes are blown harmonically into the alto sax as the audience begin to fill up the room; but then suddenly and effortlessly, the chords all simultaneously come to resolution and you realise this is, in fact, half way through the first magical, meditative song.

Self-described as ‘ Electrified plank wrangler, Pedal perve, and Word mangler’ , the sound is blues based, experimental noise sound paintings; hallucinogenic, immersive incantations- swamp blues and cosmic jazz.

Jonny Halifax does have a fabulous sound hole and he plays a homemade guitar with no soundhole, which matches his muted vocal sound (sometimes he sings through his harmonica, sometimes it is played as if he were sitting out on his porch, watching the sun go down).

No rings on his fingers but bells on his toes, the guitarist in the middle keeps the beat and is the communicative link as the guitars’ chromatic chords combine with jazzy scales and arpeggios on sax and the music ebbs and flows, near and far- occasionally discordant- and then surprisingly and unexpectedly come together in perfect harmony and cadence, to the increasingly appreciative and growing crowd. Heads are nodding, bodies moving and smiles widening as we realise we are part of something clever and well, special actually…

The vocals and muted, distorted and indiscernible, the harmonica’s versatile sound alternating between, melancholy, joyful, tense and jubilant as the songs span several time signatures, notably Ÿ time in a country-punk-style waltz. The dynamics vary from dampened, muffled  voice through the harmonica, to over blowing on the sax to create weird and wonderful harmonic impressions.

Many musical techniques are in this music- a drone or ground bass appears in lots of songs, as does ostinati- they underpin the improvisation and chromatic ramblings which speed up and slow down, the communication between the three ever as tight as their guitar strings.

The eclectic audience are dancing by now; guitars are turned on their ends and shaken, the saxophone’s vibrato fuelled notes increase in complexity and speed as the Jonny Halifax set draws to a frenetic, frenzied and fabulous finish that makes perfect sense. Oh, we loved it.

From the wings he came, picking and plucking in a glittery black velour onesie, trademark helmet completely covering his face with an old-school telephone receiver to sing through at the front, the fabulous performer that is the one and only Bob Log III emerges out on stage to rapturous applause from the packed to capacity crowd.

This is alternative blues
surreal, utterly captivating and mind-bendingly brilliant"

Opening the show with “OMG Bob Log’s in London City!” he  takes his seat and places his feet on his percussive accompaniments as he prepares to wow us all with his amazing one-man-band show. Yeah!

The songs roll past, fretboards whizzing, vocals distorted through the telephone receiver, effortless chords hammered on various guitars. This is alternative blues
surreal, utterly captivating and mind-bendingly brilliant. The feeling in the room is one of so much
fun! The audience know and love Bob Log and the atmosphere is one of easy congeniality- we all know why we’re here and everyone is friends. It’s just a lovely, happy, inclusive feeling.

Bob Log is surrounded by his ubiquitous props- his ‘band’ as he calls them – his dingy, toaster and of course, rubber ducky, which will be filled with liquor and passed around the audience for anyone to have a drink from. The blues chords are plucked, slammed and smashed out with virtuosic ease- and yes, there is toast because “everything is better with the smell of toast.”

The fans need no explanation or encouragement to feed the toaster- they are wearing Bob Log T- shirts and eagerly await the bag and a half of white sliced which when toasted, is flung around the room with joyous abandon and appreciation. Some of it is even eaten- Bob Log’s own version of the ‘bread of life’ this Eastertide.

The balloons come out- we blow them up, throw them back on stage for Bob to throw back to us and as each balloon is stamped upon, a mighty cheer goes up.

Glissando chromatics up and down the guitar frets and an ever-rubato tempo accompany this joyful madness. “Do you guys wanna get a little bit weirder?” Bob asks us and it’s a rhetorical question with an emphatic and unnecessary reply- of course we do! In this world where everyone is trying to be different and alternative, there is no one more so than Bob Log III- and he’s just so good at it- this Bob Log-style blues- a wholly original and ingeniously inventive interpretation.

Bob Log’s easy, funny, genial conversation with his adoring fans makes the evening happier and merrier than ever. He finishes each song with a self- congratulatory fist pump and cry of “Yeah!” He knows- we all know- how lucky we are to be here, in Islington tonight, at this weird and wonderful, unique and sparkly rock and roll party. Bob Log is the ultimate theatrical, guitar-wielding punk rocking bluesman.

With hypnotic riffs, foot-stomping rhythms, up-tempo beats and slide guitar licks- he really did rise again at The Lexington tonight.

MUSIC INTERVIEW: Bob Log III

Underneath the helmet.

PHOTO PROVIDED

  • PHOTO PROVIDED

It ain't nothin' but a party when one-man band Bob Log III rolls into town. Dressed like one of those circus maniacs that gets fired from a canon, Log plays viciously raw Delta blues on slide guitar with his hands, while tackling the drums with his feet. The vocals are shouted through a telephone receiver mounted on the windscreen of his motorcycle helmet. It's unpredictable madness. Perhaps it's even a little bizarre, and Log's tunes — full of lust, excess, and alcohol — are there to stir things up.

Log even manages to combine several vices, like his crowd favorite "Boob Scotch," where his tumbler of scotch is passed around the audience so that young ladies can dunk a breast. Boobs, whiskey, and motorcycle helmets aside, Logs's blues are the genuine article and mirror a lot of the stripped-down, bare-bone evil of his more conventional Fat Possum label mates. His sound is brilliantly, sloppy sleazy, and rhythmically precarious, like a drunk stripper staggering in stiletto heels on loose gravel.

Originally based in Arizona, Log now resides in Melbourne, Australia, and landed in the United States last week just in time for his upcoming U.S. tour, and our phone call. An edited transcript of the conversation follows.

CITY: Where did it all start? How did it all start?

Bob Lob III: When I was 11 my grandma got me a guitar. I listened to a lot of AC/DC, Chuck Berry, Screamin' Jay Hawkins. When I got a little older I was in a two-man band called Doo Rag and drove all around the world playing guitar and my buddy played drums on the garbage can. And when he left I had a choice of either going home and shutting up, or learning a new way to play drums. I had a helmet I had bought at a thrift store the day before and I had a guitar case. So I decided to drive to Chicago and kick the guitar case with a helmet on my head. And the chicks went so crazy, some girl took me home and fucked me all night in her friend's closet. And that's how Bob Log III started.

Do you ever see yourself expanding with a helmeted band?

It ain't really about the helmet. The thing about what you do when you're a one-man band... there's a thing that happens that no other musician gets to do, I don't care who you are. But when you're playing by yourself, you get to mess with time. You can do anything you want to do with time. You can slow it down, you can speed it up, and you can't do that when you're a whole bunch of people. You've got to all know that it's coming. When you're totally alone, you are the complete master of time and you can do whatever the fuck you want to time. You can take time out to dinner, you can throw a pie in its face, you can dress it up in a horse costume and send it out to buy milk. You can do anything you want to time. That's the main reason I do what I do by myself. I think after 15 to 16 years doing this I'm completely addicted to controlling time. It's what I love about what I do the most.

You're clearly influenced by a lot of the Fat Possum cats, like R.L. Burnside and T-Model Ford. What's it like working with them? How'd they take you?

I got to tour with R.L. like four times. I've been in the car with T-Model for hours on end. Hasil Adkins came to see me play. We played a show together. It was me, Hasil, T-Model, Paul "Wine" Jones, RL... That was the first time Hasil got to see me play. This was like 1997, when I was just getting started, and I didn't know what he was going to do. "Is he going to hate me?" Well, Hasil jumped up on the tables, kicking over everybody's drink, dancing around the room. And then at the end of the night he made me give him my autograph. He was so nice to me, he was such a cool dude, and we had such a great time. But all that aside, he was totally fuckin' nuts, too.

Do the people that dig your shtick overlook the bigger picture? Are they missing out?

People can call it whatever they want, but the people that come to the show that are dancing and smiling, they get it. It's what you're doing with your music, I suppose. To me, pretty much all rock 'n' roll is a shtick, the whole thing. What's the point? Trying to make a room full of drunk people have a good time and enjoy themselves. There are other bands that want to get up there and totally complain about something — and I'm all right with that. But I don't really call that rock 'n' roll.

I grew up with Screamin' Jay Hawkins and AC/DC. Motorhead, too. They took the blues and turned it into a party, something fun, something to look at. It isn't something I invented. I'm one of many who are trying to make what I guess you could call party music. I make party music with a guitar and a thing on my head, but shit, Screamin' Jay would make party music with a bone through his nose. Angus Young puts on schoolboy pants...what the fuck does that do? Raises the party level. And I've got no problem with that.

What's an ideal show for you?

What I'm attempting to do, when I've got a room full of people, is to really make them smile so much that their faces hurt in the morning. I want them to get so sweaty that they don't care what their hair looks like. It's not about a bunch of people standing around looking good, it's about letting loose, putting the lampshade on your head, doing something they're all going to talk about tomorrow.

It's a party.

It's a guitar party, especially Rochester. I remember you guys going totally ape shit on a Tuesday. That's one of the reasons I've fallen in love with your town. And the garbage plate. I want to do it, but not sure I can do that to myself this time. We'll see how I feel.

Is there anything else in a boob scotch other than a boobs and scotch?

If you pass it around the room and everyone puts a boob in it, you can get all kinds of floaty things in there. It doesn't necessarily have to be scotch. The idea is someone puts their boob in your drink, you take a sip, you feel better. I wrote that song because I was having a real bad day. Instead of writing about what made my day bad, I wrote the song about what made my day better. I don't care who you are or what you do. Take a little sip of that and you feel better.

Bob Log III

Bob Log III, Fat Possum recording artist and one man band crown prince of punk blues from Tuscon, Arizona. Witnessing Bob Log live is an unmissable and unforgettable experience. By rights he should be a punk blues stadium super star. He takes to the stage with his face masked in a crash helmet with a black visor and a telephone wired in it for a mic and wearing a blue jump suit. Bob then unleashes a torrent of hardcore Mississippi Delta blues, hip hop beats and punk rock. The crash helmet telephone distorts the vocals and his hands, arms, legs and feet become a blur of jump suit clad limbs as he plays slide, triggers drum machines and drums with his feet simultaneously. Bob then adds extra ingredients to this punk blues bouillabaisse with his unique version of audience participation. More often them not he’ll bounce a couple of audience members on his knees while playing, and then bring on the infamous Boob Scotch. The audience are invited to literally stick their boob in his scotch which he then drinks. If Bob feels satisfied he will then launch into his anthem Boob Scotch!

Bob Log’s identity and history is shrouded in mystery and rumour, probably helped by his stage get up and also when his record company Fat Possum put out an early press release claiming Log had a monkey’s paw grafted on to his wrist after a boating accident as a child. Here’s an excerpt....."When Bob Log III was a child, he lost his left hand in a boating accident. It was soon replaced with a monkey paw, and a new guitar style was born. 'It's my own personal style, see,' Log says, 'the paw moves much quicker than a normal hand, so my real hand has to flop around a lot to compensate.'" When asked to explain Fat Possum’s insistence that his right hand is a monkey’s paw, Log replied to an interviewer that, “My hand is just hairy. Very, very hairy. It is NOT a PAW. Fat Possum was drunk.” Log further clarified the monkey paw myth in an interview with Bizarre Magazine: "I've got all my limbs. It's just that when I'm playing my guitar my hand moves so fast it looks like a monkey paw, a hairy paw. My hand moves really fast. Faster than a normal human hand”

In fact Bob Log III was born in Tucson, Arizona and is a virtuoso slide player who plays with extremely thick strings tuned very loose that gives him his unique “floppy” sound. Growing up, Log listened to artists such as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and AC/DC, later commenting that "That's what rock'n'roll is to me. You take a guitar, turn it up and have a good time
everyone else can go listen to Pearl Jam if they want to.” Bob Log got his first guitar at the age of 11, and by the age of 16 he had become smitten with Delta Blues, modelling his slide guitar style on that of Mississippi Fred McDowell. Log began his music career recording with Mondo Guano, a four-piece metal-blues band based in Arizona. Upon leaving Mondo Guano, Log went on to perform as one-half of seminal early Delta punk blues duo Doo Rag. Bob Log III was born when Bob was in the middle of a US tour with Doo Rag and his drummer quit. With necessity , ever the mother of invention, Bob donned a helmet he had picked up in a thrift store, took to the stage and kicked his guitar case for percussion and thus the legend of Bob Log was born. Bob Log eventually found his spiritual home on maverick Mississippi blues label Fat Possum in 1998 and released a trio of classic records: School Bus, Trike and Log Bomb.

In this current world of homogenised and mass marketed music, we need true mavericks like Bob Log III more than ever.

Bob Log III

Bob Log III, all the way from Tuscon Arizona, joins us for a night of punk/ blues as part of his UK tour. đŸ€˜đŸ€˜đŸ€˜

"And then there’s this guy named Bob Log, you ever heard of him? He’s this little kid — nobody ever knows how old he is — wears a motorcycle helmet and he has a microphone inside of it and he puts the glass over the front so you can’t see his face, and plays slide guitar. It’s just the loudest, strangest stuff you’ve ever heard. You don’t understand one word he’s saying. I like people who glue macaroni on to a piece of cardboard and paint it gold. That’s what I aspire to basically” Tom Waits
