The 2021 BMW PGA Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Billy Horschel, who earned the European Tour win at Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, England.

Horschel birdied the final hole of the tournament, the par-5 18th, to secure a one-shot win over three players, including Laurie Canter, Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Jamie Donaldson.

Canter couldn't birdie the last to force a playoff after Horschel. Donaldson eagled the last to get into a tie for second. Aphibarnrat made a par after making a disastrous bogey 6 on the par-5 17th.

Horschel won the $1,333,330 winner's share of the $8,000,000 purse.

BMW PGA Championship: Ludvig Åberg opens up two-shot lead after third round at Wentworth

Tommy Fleetwood and Connor Syme head the chasing pack after 54 holes at Wentworth, with Jon Rahm four off the pace heading into Sunday's final round which has been brought forward due to bad weather; watch live on Sky Sports Golf from 10am with Featured Group coverage from 8.30am

Ludvig Åberg will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the BMW PGA Championship after continuing his sensational form with a six-under 66 in the third round at Wentworth.

The 23-year-old Swede, who is bidding for back-to-back victories after winning the European Masters earlier this month to earn a Ryder Cup call-up, carded an eagle, five birdies and just one bogey to keep the chasing pack at bay as he finished on 16 under.

His nearest pursuers on 14 under are England's Tommy Fleetwood and Connor Syme of Scotland, although there are a number of players still within striking distance and ready to take advantage of any Sunday slip-ups by Åberg.

Åberg, who only turned professional in June, started the day in a tie for the lead on 10 under with his compatriot Sebastian Soderberg, but took command at the par-five fourth when he made an eagle after knocking his second to around six feet as Soderberg fell out of contention with a triple-bogey.

Machine-like golf from Åberg then earned him birdies at the seventh, eighth and 12th as he opened up a two-shot cushion despite a number of players keeping tabs on him.

A hook into the trees off the 13th tee then looked like the pressure was starting to tell on Åberg as he took a drop and hacked out before leaving himself with a 36-footer for a bogey which he promptly drained for a massive confidence-booster.

The 15th was a perfectly-played hole which secured him another birdie and he then missed decent chances at the 16th and 17th before making a further gain from a greenside bunker at the 18th.

"It was a lot of fun," said Åberg. "I felt like I was striking the ball pretty good today even though I had a few left misses with my driver but ended up with some key saves here and there, and then with a few nice shots coming in.

"I think even if I wasn't leading, I'd be looking forward to playing a Sunday round at Wentworth. Such an iconic place and I'm just fortunate to play good golf the last three days and hopefully I'll keep playing.

"I almost got a little bit of a warm-up the first two days playing with Rory (McIlroy), a lot of stuff going on. I felt like I handled it well the last two days and did the same today where I kept my feet where they are and tried to focus on one shot at a time. Hopefully I'll do the same tomorrow and play some good golf."

Fleetwood made an early slip with a bogey at the third but bounced back with an eagle at the fourth followed by a birdie at the fifth.

Further birdies at the 10th, 12th and 17th kept him in touch with Åberg as he signed for a 67 to sit ready to pounce in the final round, for which tee times have been brought forward due to the threat of bad weather with the final group teeing off at 10.30am.

Fleetwood said: "It is so much fun playing in front of a crowd like this, and you're getting rooted for all the way around. I'd love tomorrow to play well down the stretch and give them something to cheer about. It's such a cool atmosphere to play in. I look forward to that and keeping the crowd on myself.

"It's a huge event and something that everybody on The European Tour aims for in their career, and playing tomorrow with a chance and hopefully to be able to do it would really be great. I really look forward to it."

Syme stormed through the field with a run of four birdies and an eagle (at the 12th) in seven holes from the turn, but he was unable to take advantage of the two closing par-fives as back-to-back pars secured him a seven-under 65.

That score was bettered by Callum Shinkwin, who had ended a run of nine successive missed cuts at last week's Irish Open, as he rattled in eight birdies in a flawless 64, while his fellow Englishman Aaron Rai did manage to birdie the 18th for a 67 to join him on 13 under.

european tour golf wentworth leaderboard

Also on 13 under is New Zealander Ryan Fox, whose colourful 66 included eagles at the fourth and 12th, five birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey at the fifth.

Jon Rahm, who has finished second on both his previous appearances at Wentworth, was hot on Åberg's tail when he made five birdies in six holes from the third as he produced a variety of excellent shots.

A further birdie followed at the 11th before a poor second shot at the 12th saw him play some ragged golf for a spell with two bogeys preceding closing birdies at 17 and 18th which earned the Spaniard a 66 and put him firmly back in contention at 12 under.

Jon Rahm of Spain plays his second shot on the 9th hole during Day Three of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth

Rahm's European Ryder Cup team-mates Sepp Straka (69) and Tyrrell Hatton (68) both remain in the running on 11 under, while Viktor Hovland (67) will still hope to strike from 10 under, although defending champion Shane Lowry (67) may just be too far off the pace on nine under.

Belgium's Thomas Detry found himself at the top of the leaderboard alongside Åberg after four birdies in his first eight holes, but a poor back nine, culminating in a double-bogey at the last, saw him finish down on 10 under following a 71.

Friday's delays meant a late two-tee start to the third round with Rory McIlroy, who just made the cut, teeing off at the ninth from where he carded a 67, which featured seven birdies and two bogeys, to move to six under.

McIlroy

Soderberg went on to add another triple-bogey at the 17th in a round of 79 which dropped him back to three under, while Masahiro Kawamura, who was also in the final group tumbled, down to five under following a triple-bogey at the last for a 76.

Ryan Fox rallies to win European tour's top event at Wentworth

  • Associated Press

VIRGINIA WATER, England -- Ryan Fox overcame a 3-shot deficit and a triple bogey early in the final round Sunday with six birdies on the back nine -- the last one from 6 feet on the 18th hole -- for a 5-under 67 and a 1-shot victory over Aaron Rai and Tyrrell Hatton in the BMW PGA Championship.

Fox started shaking his right fist as the final birdie putt was inches from going in, the final stroke of a masterpiece over his last 15 holes that carried the Kiwi to his fourth European tour title and by the far the biggest of his career.

"I played great," Fox said. "Pretty much didn't miss a shot from the third hole onwards and saw a couple of putts go in, and it was pretty cool feeling on the last to know I had one to win and actually make it."

Ludvig Aberg , the Swedish rookie, never recovered from an atrocious start. Aberg, going for his second straight win, started with a 2-shot lead, but it was long gone by the time he made the turn.

Aberg took two double bogeys on the front nine with poor chips and missed putts. He missed five putts from inside 6 feet. He closed with a 76 and tied for 10th.

That turned the back nine at Wentworth into a free-for-all among four players chasing the flagship event on the European tour in the rain and a one-hour delay from lightning in the area.

Hatton opened with five birdies in seven holes and had the lead until a tee shot sailed out-of-bounds on the 15th hole, and he did well to escape with a bogey. Hatton birdied the 18th for a 66 to momentarily tie Fox for the lead.

Rai boldly hit the par-5 18th green with a fairway metal, and his 40-foot eagle putt to take the lead caught the left edge of the cup. He tapped in for birdie and a 68, joining Hatton in the lead. Jon Rahm needed eagle on the 18th, and his 20-foot putt narrowly missed. He had a 68 and wound up 2 shots behind.

That set the stage for Fox, who chose to lay up on the 18th not trusting his lie in moderate rough with water in front of the green. His wedge spun back to 6 feet and made the winner.

None of this seemed possible to Fox when he drove out-of-bounds on No. 3, went into a bunker and took triple bogey. At the time, he was 5 shots out of the lead.

"I certainly didn't think I'd be talking to you after the third hole," Fox said to Sky Sports. "I don't know what to think at the moment. I've always struggled around here. To have a back nine like that, especially with how I started the day, it's amazing.

"I just tried to steady the ship, and I played great."

His longest birdie putt on the back nine was from 12 feet on No. 11. His most impressive was after the weather delay, when he hit out of the trees to 8 feet for birdie to take the lead for good. Fox finished at 18-under 270.

Hatton said he had mixed emotions, happy to have a great week heading into the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone but disappointed by not winning in front of a spirited English gallery that included his father. His drive out-of-bounds came during the heaviest rain.

It was an inspiring day for Europe as it relates to the Ryder Cup. All 12 players were at Wentworth, and all 12 made the cut, including captain Luke Donald .

At one point early Sunday, the leading six players were Ryder Cup members and nine of them were among the top 20. In the end, Viktor Hovland (67) finished fifth, followed by Tommy Fleetwood (72) and Rory McIlroy (65).

McIlroy had to make birdie on the final hole Friday in the dark to make the cut, and he wound up with another top-10.

"To shoot the scores I've done over the last two days, it's been nice, and I saw some improvements from Thursday and Friday, which has been great," McIlroy said. "Now it's just all about looking forward to Rome and getting the game in the best shape possible."

Fox had not registered a top-10 in what he said has been a tough year. His second child was born 4 months ago, and his father-in-law died in June after a brief battle with cancer. He was third last week in the Irish Open and now has his first Rolex Series title.

Lowry holds off McIlroy, LIV golfers for BMW PGA Championship win for 'good guys'

Bogey-free victory at wentworth was his first since 2019 british open.

Social Sharing

Shane Lowry tapped in for birdie at the 18th hole and then had to wait and see if Rory McIlroy could produce something special to force a playoff at Wentworth.

McIlroy gave himself a chance and the crowd cheered as his long eagle putt on the final hole crept slowly toward the cup, only to stop less than an inch short.

McIlroy crouched down, staring at the ball in disbelief, while Lowry hugged his caddie in the scorer's tent to celebrate a one-shot victory at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday in Virginia Water, England.

It was Lowry's first win since the British Open at 2019 and came after a bogey-free performance over three days at Wentworth.

It was also, according to the 35-year-old Irishman, a win for all the golfers who -- like him -- have rejected the lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia-backed breakaway series LIV Golf. Lowry and McIlroy were both outspoken this week in criticizing the fact that a contingent of LIV golfers had been allowed to play at Wentworth.

"I wanted to go out and win this tournament for myself, first and foremost, but I think for this tour and everyone that has stayed loyal to this tour," Lowry said. "I really feel like this is one for the good guys."

McIlroy and Jon Rahm were tied for second, one shot back. Talor Gooch, who plays on the LIV circuit, was another shot back in fourth place.

  • BRITISH OPEN Shane Lowry shrugs off poor weather, Sunday pressure for 6-shot win

The tournament was reduced to 54 holes with no play on Friday after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.

Superb approach shot

Lowry finished with a 7-under 65 for a 17-under total of 199.

"I said to my coach this morning, 'I need to just allow myself to play golf today,"' Lowry said. "I'm playing the best golf of my life; I need to just allow myself to do that. And I did that."

Rahm surged up the leaderboard with a 62, rolling in an eagle putt on the 18th to take a two-shot clubhouse lead at 16 under. He then had to wait more than two hours to see if it would be good enough for the win, although on a low-scoring day at Wentworth it never looked likely to be.

A superb approach shot from Lowry on the 18th made sure of that.

Lowry hit an iron from 242 yards onto the center of the green – a shot good enough to earn an immediate fist bump from his caddie -- and then rolled an eagle putt to within a few inches of the hole, leaving himself a tap-in birdie for the lead.

McIlroy, playing in the pairing behind Lowry, also had a 14-foot birdie putt on the 17th break just to the right of the hole. When Lowry then birdied the last hole, McIlroy knew he needed to eagle the par-5 18th, something he has never managed at Wentworth.

He came agonizingly close.

"I thought three feet out even that that putt was going in the hole," said McIlroy, who won his third FedEx Cup title last month. "It just sort of wriggled right on me at the end. But overall, it's been another really good week."

It was a first win for Lowry at Wentworth in his 13th appearance in the European Tour's flagship event, having finished second to McIlroy in 2014.

"I love it here, I've contended in the past," Lowry said. "The bad shots that I've hit over the years in contention actually started to creep into my head. It's amazing what this game does."
